The organically grown cotton used as the base fabric in these shorts helps reduce the amount of toxic chemicals and pesticides that wash into our rivers and streams. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF SHORTS

UPF RATING

When choosing the best surf shorts, protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation should be a serious consideration. The UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, of a particular piece of clothing is rated on a scale of 15 – 50. I realize that sounds like an odd rating system, but it’ll make sense in a moment.

The way UPF rating is measured is by a ratio of how many UV rays that a piece of clothing will allow to pass through. The higher the number, the better the protection.

For example, a UPF rating of 20 will allow 1 out of 20 (1:20) UV rays to reach your skin. Another way of conceptualizing this is by thinking about the percentage rate of UV rays blocked. So, a UPF rating of 20 will block 95% of damaging UV radiation.

UPF RATINGS:

  • Excellent: 40-50
  • Very Good: 25-35
  • Good: 15-20

So why is 15 the lowest rating? I’m glad you asked! Anything below this number isn’t advertised because it doesn’t actually provide any substantial protection. To draw a comparison, 100% cotton garments only block 1 out of every 5 rays (UPF 5).

QUICK DRYING

Some of the surf shorts on our list are treated with a durable water repellent (DWR). This allows water to roll off the fabric instead of soaking into it, making dry times much quicker than untreated fabrics. DWR treatment is more of a luxury than a necessity, but it’s definitely nice to have your shorts dry by the time you’re finished loading your surf gear into your car.

MOISTURE-WICKING FABRICS

Fabrics that wick moisture are able to pull sweat/water away from skin, keeping you drier. This means that you have less of a chance to develop a rash from chafing skin. An added bonus is that moisture-wicking fabrics help you stay cooler as the water being drawn from skin pulls heat away from your body.

If you’re going to be surfing in hotter climates or for a prolonged period in warm areas, look for garments that are moisture-wicking to help keep you cool and safe.

4-WAY STRETCH

This is an awesome technology that has been used increasingly in watersports apparel as well as other outdoor/active gear. Essentially, 4-Way Stretch is a fabric’s ability to stretch, both width and length wise, and then return to its original shape.

Whether you’re an advanced surfer that shreds weekend waves or a true beginner just making your first venture into the sport, a good rash guard will keep you protected from the elements and on the water longer. We’ve compiled the top 10 best rash guards to give you the best protection possible!

Rash guards provide a host of benefits, chief among them being that they prevent your skin from chafing by wicking away excess moisture. Several rash guards also come with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating that helps protect your skin from harmful rays. Many of the rash guards we’ve chosen have a UPF rating of 50 or higher, which is considered the best possible protection. These garments filter out 98% of harmful UV rays keeping you safe and lobster skin free.

We’ve also chosen a few rash guards that can be used throughout seasonal shifts in weather, providing some warmth in chillier temps and extra protection against wind. There’s no need to “rash-onalize” this decision, pick your favorite from below and hit the water!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING RASH GUARDS

UPF RATING

A garment’s UPF rating, also known as Ultraviolet Protection Factor, helps protect your skin from harmful UV radiation and irritating sunburns. A UPF rating of 50 means that 1 out of every 50 UV rays will pass through the garment and reach your skin. To put it another way, a garment with 50 UPF will filter out 98% of harmful UV rays.

A UPF rating of 15-20 is considered “Good”, 25-35 is considered “Very Good”, and UPF 40 and above is “Excellent.” UPF below 15 isn’t advertised because it’s not considered to actually protect you. To compare, a cotton t-shirt has a UPF rating of 5.

A few other factors to consider that can also enhance your UPF rating is how dense the fabric is, what color garment you choose, and how you launder it. Denser fabrics offer slightly higher UPF due to their tight weave that helps block out UV rays. Darker colored garments tend to attract more UV rays than lighter colored ones. When choosing between similar colors, brighter hues outperform paler tones. Lastly, if you shrink a garment in the wash it can also enhance the UPF rating in the same way that a dense fabric performs.

FIT AND CUT

Knowing what type of fit and cut you personally prefer and which will help you the most in any given conditions are very important when deciding on which rash guard will work best for you. A lot of this depends on the surfboard you ride and your experience level. There are three types of fits and cuts that rash guards can sport.

Fit is how the rash guard will lay on you after putting it on.

  • An athletic fit means that the rash guard will fit like a second skin and can be layered beneath a wetsuit in colder conditions. Typically, a more athletic cut is better suited for colder water unless otherwise stated.
  • A slim fit means that the rash guard won’t feel painted on but will still cling to your body in a sporty fashion. These are typically suited to warmer temperatures.
  • The relaxed fit is for those who don’t like skin tight anything, but it’s also a great choice for hot days allowing ventilation to keep you cool.

The cut of a rash guard is quite simply the sleeve length.

  • Sleeveless is a great option for spring and summer surfers and many prefer it due to the feeling of enhanced arm mobility.
  • Short sleeve rash guards are best suited for summer surfing as they will keep your shoulders protected from burning but can also be a great choice for spring or fall surfers who don’t mind cooler water temps.
  • Long sleeves are best for winter, early spring, and late fall surfing as they will help keep you warmer in the cold waters. But don’t let that sway you from wearing them during summer! Long sleeves are an awesome summer choice to keep arms fully protected from harmful sunburns.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A RASH GUARD

Rash guards were originally created to prevent surfers from getting rashes from the constant chafing against the wax on their boards, though they can come in handy for a lot of reasons these days.

Different styles, materials, fits and thicknesses mean they are just as often used for sun protection, as an extra layer of insulation under a wetsuit or over a swimsuit, and even for protection against stings. Given the amount of variables, it can seem a daunting task to try and work out which one might be best for you. Make sure to read through the following considerations before deciding which rash guard is right for you from the list above.

USE

With so many styles of rash guards out there, it’s important to give some thought to how and when you’re likely to be using one.If you think you’ll predominantly be using your rash guard in colder seas, it might be useful to have a tighter-fitting, long-sleeved top to keep you warm. With a tight-fitting, long sleeve rash guard, you can use it comfortably under a wetsuit as an extra layer of insulation.

If you’re after a bikini cover up to protect your shoulders from the sun’s harmful rays, then perhaps a shorter-sleeved, zipper-fronted rash guard might suit you best. Perhaps you’re someone who travels to both tropical and colder climates, in which case you might consider a long-sleeved one-piece to use as a warm layer under a wetsuit or as a protective option from the sun.

Most rash guards are pretty versatile and some will even double up as active workout tops, given their moisture-wicking qualities. So have a good think about what you want to get out of your rash guard and start looking for one that ticks those boxes!

MATERIALS

Most rash guards are made from a combination of synthetic fibers such as Nylon, Spandex, Polyester, Elastane, and occasionally Neoprene if they’re a little thicker. Spandex, Lycra and Elastane have stretchy, form-fitting qualities while Polyester and Nylon tend to be fast-drying and moisture-wicking. A combination is usually a safe bet. Look for a composition such as 82% Polyester, 18% Spandex, or 78% Nylon, 22% Elastane. Check out The Clymb’s buying guide for a breakdown on the properties of each material.

UPF PROTECTION

This is one of the main benefits of owning a rash guard. Not only are the sun’s rays stronger when you’re in water, but the cooling effect of the water can often deceive you into thinking you’re not getting burnt. This is why looking for a top with a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is vital. Most rash guards will have UPF 50+ protection, but some cheaper options won’t have any at all, so look out for this! LeisurePro offers a great guide on what different ratings mean and how much you’ll be protected.

FIT AND STYLE

The thought of wearing tight-fitting lycra on a beach all day can to many be a daunting prospect. But not to fear, function doesn’t always need to compromise style; there are looser-fitting styles of rash guards out there. A ‘close-to-body’ or ‘form-fitting’ style is sometimes preferable as they fit snug under a wetsuit whilst allowing breathability so you don’t feel as if you’re being sucked in at every angle! If your main priority is to stay warm however, a tight fit is the best option.

Most rash guards often have a high or crew neckline. High necklines are great in colder weather as they will prevent water from entering through the top. A crew neckline offers a more breathable option for summertime or warmer water conditions. Which you decide to go for just depends on what you’ll be wearing your rash guard for. You should consider the type of surfboard you prefer to ride — whether it’s a hard top or a soft top — and your experience level — whether you’re a beginner surfer or you’ve been riding the waves for years.

You might also see features such as 4-way stretch, raglan-sleeves and garments made from 6 panels of material. These are all great features as they allow for a great range of movement and stretch.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UPF PROTECTION

Ultraviolet Protection Factor. A top with UPF 50+ will allow 1/50th of the sun’s rays to pass through to the skin.

RAGLAN SLEEVES

Sleeves that extend from the collar in one-piece. The diagonal seam from collarbone to underarm allows for a broader range of movement than normal sleeves.

FLATLOCK STITCHING

This means the stitching on the garment lies flat, which prevents rubbing and chafing.

MOISTURE-WICKING

As well as drying quickly, fabric with moisture-wicking qualities draws moisture away from the skin. The combination of these factors means you will feel less sweaty and your body can more effectively regulate its temperature.
