While some harnesses wear over time, the Pyro’s memory foam core becomes more comfortable. The harness is a bit larger than others, which tall kiteboarders will prefer. The harness maintains its shape horizontally but flexes vertically. This results in comfortable, responsive riding. Another thing that makes this harness comfortable is the foam that lines the inside of the harness. It’s considered “intelligent” because of the way the harness molds to the shape of your body. This doesn’t just make the harness comfortable, it keeps it locked in place.

Even though the center is stiff, the sides of the harness are flexible. The harness adjusts well to powerful kiteboarders, especially those who generate their power from their core. One thing that makes this harness shine though is a built-in safety knife. In the event of an emergency, you’ll be able to detach yourself very quickly. Kiteboarders rave about this harness.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A KITEBOARD HARNESS

BACK SUPPORT

The amount of back support on a harness is important. A stiff harness will be much more responsive to short, quick turns. However, your body will take more impact if you make a mistake. Harnesses with medium back support are much more comfortable but require more energy to initiate turns. All of the harnesses on this list are technically rigid harnesses, which mean that they maintain their shape over time. Nowadays, almost every serious kiteboarder prefers rigid harnesses over seat harnesses.

CLOSURE

Even though the harnesses on this list are rigid, they are more flexible on the sides and in the front. It’s important to purchase the right size of harness so that it remains in place throughout a long kiteboarding session. Each company has its own unique way to keep the harness snug. If you’ve had issues with your harness in the past, it’s recommended to get a harness with dual closure.

HOOK TYPE

There are two ways that you can attach your harness to your kite – either with a spreader bar or with a hook. The advantage of a spreader bar is that it transfers the force of the kite throughout the harness instead of just one point. There are multiple different types of spreader bars that work for different styles of riding. You don’t have to worry about your harness and spreader bar being compatible with one another. Nowadays, the two different pieces of equipment pair together without much trouble.

LEASH ATTACHMENTS

These are small rings that are located either on the front, side, or back of your harness. You’ll attach your safety leash and safety line to these different points. Most harnesses come with a front and back leash attachment.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

COMES WITH A DOUBLE BLADED HOOK KNIFE

If you lose control of your kite, the last thing you want is to get launched into the air. A hook knife will allow you to cut your line and return to safety with minimal damage.

HIGH BACK HARNESS IS GREAT FOR BEGINNERS

Having a harness with an extended back will give you much more support on the water. This will also allow you to conserve more energy because you won’t need to use your core as much in order to maintain control.

INTELLIGENT FOAM MOLDS TO YOUR BODY OVERTIME

The foam on the inside of harnesses is what keeps them comfortable during long riding sessions. A harness will be stiff initially and then break in overtime. A harness with intelligent foam will mold to your body much quicker than others.

LUMBAR LOCK SYSTEM

Ride Engine boasts this technology, which minimizes the harness moving around during riding.

ULTRA COMPATIBLE WITH ANY TYPE OF SPREADER BAR

Dakine makes very high-quality products, which is why their harnesses pair well with equipment from other brands.

Reviews - Best Fins for Bodyboarding

US Divers Shredder II

Specs
  • Color: Red/Black
  • Paddling: Fast
  • Acceleration: Slow
Features
  • Large Drainage Channel Empties Water Quickly So You Don’t Get Weighed Down
  • Adjustable Foot Strap For Customized Sizing
  • Built-In Leash System Keeps Your Fins From Floating Away
  • Compact Design Makes The Fins Easy To Transport

BEST FOR: CUSTOMIZABLE FIT

There are two unique features of this pair of bodyboarding fins. First, they have an adjustable strap. Bodyboarding fins break-in over time, which is why it’s recommended to buy a pair of fins that are a bit smaller than your street shoe size. These fins will allow you to err on the side of caution when purchasing. Second, the fins come with a built-in leash system. If the waves are pounding and they trip your fins off your feet, you won’t have to worry about chasing them far since they’ll stay attached to your body! These fins are unique, but they also perform well.

Dorsal Bodyboard Swimfins

Specs
  • Color: Green/Black
  • Paddling: Moderate
  • Acceleration: Fast
Features
  • Drainage Hole At The Top Of The Foot Is More Comfortable
  • Stiff Blades For Extremely Fast Acceleration
  • Unique Design Promises Faster Speed And More Control
  • Soft And Supple Foot Pocket Molds Around The Foot For Comfort

BEST FOR: DRAINAGE

Most fins on the market today have a drainage hole underneath the foot, which allows for sand to enter into the fin easier. The Dorsal Bodyboard fins are unique because they move the drainage hole to the toe of the fin. These fins are also made with a different material than the others – gum rubber. Some bodyboarders claim that they mold around the foot better than others. These fins will get you out to the waves and perform well for you once you get out there.

DaFin Black Swimfins

Specs
  • Color: Multiple Options
  • Paddling: Moderate
  • Acceleration: Moderate
Features
  • Designed By Bodyboarding Legends For Dependable Performance
  • Endorsed By The United States Lifesaving Organization
  • Middle Dorsal Fin Makes Fins Rigid And Responsive
  • Fins Float In Salt Water

BEST FOR: BODYBOARDING LIFEGUARDS

The Dafin Black Swimfins are one of the oldest bodyboarding fins on the market. They’ve been used by bodyboarders since the very beginning of the sport. They also happen to be the only fins that are endorsed by The United States Lifesaving Organization. If you’re a lifeguard who catches waves between shifts, your boss will be happy to see you with these bad boys. They are also wider than other fins, helping them strike a balance between paddling speed and acceleration.

Kpaloa Waterman

Specs
  • Color: Black/Green
  • Paddling: Slow
  • Acceleration: Fast
Features
  • Great For All Levels Of Bodyboarders, From Beginners To Experts
  • Specifically Designed For Water Surface Leg Kicks
  • Fins Come With Free Mesh Bag For Easy Storage

BEST FOR: SURFACE KICKS

Most fins try to strike a balance between performing on the waves and performing on the paddle out to the waves. This pair focuses primarily on performance on the wave. When you are trying to boost yourself, you’re going to be doing a lot of surface kicks. These fins were designed to do just that. Also, while most fins have one large drainage hole, these fins have three. If you’ve been disappointed with traditionally built fins, give these ones a shot.

DMC Repellor Fins

Specs
  • Color: Green/Black
  • Paddling: Fast
  • Acceleration: Moderate
Features
  • Unique Shape And Design Allow For Fin To Contact Water At Multiple Points
  • Silicone Composition Of Fins Is Extremely Flexible And Comfortable
  • Ridges At Both Sides Of Fins Allow For Great Control In Water

BEST FOR: MAXIMUM SURFACE AREA

It seems as if different animals are the best way to describe the performance of fins. While others use terms like duck feet or dorsal fins, these fins compare themselves to a squid. Yes, you read that correctly. The fins really stick to the water, which allows them to generate a ton of power. These fins have extremely large sidewalls as well. This makes the fins extremely powerful and the top contender for best bodyboarding fins on the list.

Churchill Makapuu Swimfins

Specs
  • Color: Blue/Yellow
  • Paddling: Slow
  • Acceleration: Fast
Features
  • Unique Shape Makes Fins Lightweight With Great Acceleration
  • Stiff Side Rails For Powerful And Controlled Kicks
  • Large Drainage Hole Keeps Sand And Water Out Of Fin
  • Rounded Footbox For Tight Fit Around Foot

BEST FOR QUICK ACCELERATION

These fins are the smallest on the list and have the most unique shape. Together they form a dolphin fin shape. This removes a lot of material on the insides of the fin, keeping them lightweight and giving them better accelerating abilities. The fit of these fins is flexible and they mold around the feet, but they also feature an extremely stiff toe to aid with acceleration. If all you care about is getting going as quickly as possible, these are the fins for you.

Hydro Tech 2 Fins

Specs
  • Color: Multiple Options
  • Paddling: Fast
  • Acceleration: Moderate
Features
  • Designed To Mimic Natural Movement Of Foot
  • Small And Comfortable Ankle Strap
  • Super Soft Silicone Construction Makes Fins Extremely Comfortable
  • 3 Drainage Holes To Ensure Sand And Water Stay Out

BEST FOR: DROP KNEE RIDING

The Hydro Tech 2 fins are a contender for the best fins on the list. What makes them stand out are two things — comfort and versatility. The foot box on these fins is shaped like a foot, which gives them a much more natural feel. It also allows for the force to be spread out to the entire foot, instead of just the toes. The fins are best for drop knee riders. Why? Well they are designed to avoid catching in the upright position. If you aren’t sure exactly which fins to purchase, give these a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Cressi Agua Short Fins

Specs
  • Color: Black Blue
  • Paddling: Fast
  • Acceleration: Slow
Features
  • Longer Fins Are Great For Paddling Out To Waves
  • Very Flexible Design Makes Fins Easy To Store
  • Fins Can Be Used For Multiple Different Water Sports
  • Self Adjusting Foot Pocket For Great Comfort

BEST FOR: PADDLING OUT

Even though these fins are considered the shorter version of Cressi fins, they are larger than others on the list. There are two main advantages to this. First, paddling out to catch waves is quicker and simpler. Second, the fins can be used for other water activities, such as snorkeling, SCUBA diving, and swimming.

These fins aren’t as stiff as others on the list, which makes them easier to store. However, reviewers have complained that the fins tend to lose their stiffness over time. If you want an all-around pair of fins to use in the water, these are for you. If you want fins only for bodyboarding, consider another pair on the list.

Voit Duck Feet

Specs
  • Color: Blue/Green
  • Paddling: Moderate
  • Acceleration: Moderate
Features
  • Double Drainage Holes Makes Fins Fast And Comfortable
  • Extended Middle Dorsal Fin For Great Control
  • Soft Rubber Foot Pocket Allows You To Stay In The Water Longer
  • Fins Are Dependable And Date Back To The 1950’s

BEST FOR: DEPENDABILITY

If you’ve been bodyboarding for a while, chances are you’ve heard of these legendary fins. The fins are called Duck Feet for a reason. With no structured foot box, the shape of the fins truly mimics that of a duck. The middle of the fin has a stiff ridge, which will keep you in control and also allow you to accelerate quickly. These fins strike a great balance between acceleration and paddling speed. They have a great reputation and you can be guaranteed that these fins will perform for you.

Hubb Dubb Zero Swim Fins

Specs
  • Color: Red/Black
  • Paddling: Slow
  • Acceleration: Fast
Features
  • Double Drainage Holes Remove Water And Sand And Makes Fins Lightweight
  • Fins Come With Free Drawstring Bag For Easy Storage
  • Comfortable Foot Pocket Will Keep You In The Water Longer
  • Unique Back Strap Keeps Foot Locked Into Place

BEST FOR: STIFFNESS

If you need just a quick snap to catch a wave, consider these fins. They are much stiffer than other fins on the list. This makes them harder to paddle out to waves in but makes them extremely quick when trying to catch a wave. Because the fins are shorter than others, they are easier to ride drop knee. The fins are also tight-fitting and comfortable. Reviewers love these fins, and chances are you will, too.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BODYBOARD FINS

ACCELERATION

The acceleration of fins is one of the things that makes bodyboarding fins stand out. Most bodyboarders prefer fins that accelerate quickly so that they can catch a wave with minimal effort. Fins that accelerate fast are typically stiffer and smaller.

COMFORT

If you’re a serious bodyboarder, chances are you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the water. For this reason, try to choose a pair of bodyboarding fins that boast extreme comfort.

Typically fins that mold to your foot’s shape are preferred over fins that hold the same stiff shape. Another thing that factors into the fin’s comfort is the heel strap. If you are blister prone, consider buying a pair of fins that have an adjustable heel.

DRAINAGE

Where you want your fins to drain is a personal preference. Underneath the arch of the foot was once the standard. Nowadays, however, fins are putting drainage holes near the toes of the foot. The advantage of this is that sand will not become trapped if you walk out to the water. However, your foot will not make such direct contact with the water, which is ideal for quick acceleration.

PADDLING

This refers to how well your fins help you get out to the waves. Bodyboarding fins are typically shorter and stiffer, which makes paddling out more difficult than other types of water fins.

SIZE

Due to their rubber construction, bodyboarding fins break-in over time. That’s why buying fins that are a bit smaller than your street shoe size is recommended.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

BUILT-IN LEASH SYSTEM

Fortunately, fins are designed to float. However, this doesn’t mean they will stay near to you after coming off. Fins with a built-in leash system will stay attached to you even if they slip off in a big wave.

DESIGNED TO MIMIC NATURAL MOVEMENT OF FOOT

Fins with this technology are shaped to fit tightly around your foot. The stiffness of the fin is uniform instead of being reinforced along the edges or middle of the fin.

The kite is built with 5 struts, which allows the kite to maintain stability in gusty wind conditions. Beginners will fall in love with the turning ability of the kite. If you’re just starting to get the hang of quick, sharp turns, this kite will allow for quick learning while remaining forgiving. If you’re a beginner who wants to get big air, this is a great option for you.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A KITESURFING KITE

HANGTIME

Oftentimes beginner riders think that the larger the kite, the longer the hangtime. This is a misconception. What really impacts the hangtime is the shape of your kite. C-Shaped kites will boost you into the air quickly with a lot of power. However, they won’t glide as long in the air as delta or bow-shaped kites. Delta or bow shaped kites won’t boost as quickly, but they hang in the air for a long time. The best kites for big air riders, however, are hybrid shaped. These kites have both good boost and good hang time.

RIDING STYLE

If you’re a beginner, chances are your style of riding is freeriding. These sorts of kites, paired with the right board, will allow you to try different types of riding. If you want to spend more time in the air, consider a freestyle or wakestyle kite. These kites don’t require as much effort to get into the air.

SIZE

Determining what size of kite to buy can be one of the most difficult things for beginners. There are three different things that you’ll want to consider when determining what size of kite you should buy. First and foremost, your weight. Second, the style of riding you prefer. Third, the average wind speed at the place you plan to use your kite at most. To make things easier on yourself, consider using this kite size calculator.

STRUTS

Struts are what give kites their shape. They are the rigid air chambers where the kite folds. Kites with more struts will be heavier but will keep their shape in high wind conditions. Nowadays, kites are being built with fewer and fewer struts to keep them lightweight. These kites require more power when the wind is strong. However, you won’t have trouble getting them into the air if the wind is light.

TURNING SPEED

How comfortable do you feel when kiteboarding? If you are progressing quickly, you’ll feel comfortable on a kite that can make quick, sharp turns. If you are just starting out, a kite with medium turning speed will be easier to control.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

MULTIPLE BRIDLE CONFIGURATIONS

Bridles are the lines that connect you to your kiteboard. The benefit of having a kite with multiple configurations is that you can change the style of riding that you want to do. Most beginners will prefer a 4-line system, but as you progress you may want a 5-line system.

RELAUNCHING IS EASY AND GENTLE

If you are a beginner, this is something you will want in your kite. Relaunching is the very beginning of a kiteboarding session, and chances are you’ll be relaunching a lot during your first sessions on the water.

It may be the most expensive board on the list, but it will last for years.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A KITESURFING BOARD

FINS

Most kitesurfers prefer to set up their boards with 3 or 4 fins. A 3-fin setup is ideal for beginners because it allows a good balance of control, stability, and maneuverability. Having a fin that is located at the back of the board makes turning much more controlled. You’ll be able to do the quick, sharp turns that surfers love.

A 4-fin setup allows for much more acceleration and speed. Because there is no fin in the middle of the board, your turns will have more of an arched shape. The board will lock into all sorts of waves and accelerate on its own, whereas on a 3-fin setup, you’ll have to pump in order to speed up your board. Ultimately the setup of your fins comes down to personal preference.

NOSE

There are two different types of kitesurfing board noses on this list. The first is the rounded nose, which is better for beginners. The board will have more float and stability, especially in smaller waves. A pointed nose, on the other hand,  allows for more board performance and quicker responsiveness.

SIZE

If you are a true beginner, a larger board is recommended. Your board will be much more stable, allowing you to remain in control throughout your session. Shorter boards, however, are more playful. You’ll be able to toss your board around with much more ease.

TAIL

There are three different types of kitesurfing tails on this list, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:

Pointed – Much better for larger waves. The board will really lock into the waves, however, this makes the board a bit more difficult to turn.

Rounded – Strikes a balance between Rounded Squash and Pointed. The traction is good, but you won’t be able to turn as sharply as you would with a rounded squash board.

Rounded Squash – Great for turns and speed, but you won’t have as much traction as other shaped boards. This type of tail is good for a wide variety of surf conditions.

TRACTION

The traction of your kitesurfing board is important because unlike other types of boards, you won’t have anything locking your feet in. Some kitesurfers can do without a front traction pad, but it’s recommended to have both a front and a back traction pad so you can really lock into your board.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

BOARD ACCELERATES QUICKLY

Nothing is worse than your kite accelerating while your board is left behind. A board with a 4-fin setup will keep up with your kite in a variety of wind and wave conditions.

DURABLE CONSTRUCTION

Surfboards and kitesurfing boards are quite similar in their shape, but kitesurfing boards are lighter due to their foam core. A board with durable construction protects this core better and makes the board less prone to snapping or being damaged.

FOOTSTRAP INSERTS AVAILABLE

All of the kitesurfing boards on the list allow for foot straps to be inserted. This will allow you to modify how you want to be attached to your board.

A wetsuit won’t make you a better surfer, but it will keep you out on the water longer. If you’re new to buying wetsuits, don’t worry! This list was compiled just for you by our surfing experts over here at The Adventure Junkies. Surf through this list and we’ll see you on the waves!

  • Thermal Lining Dries Fast And Keeps You Warm
Vissla 7 Seas 3/2 MM

BEST QUICK-DRYING WETSUIT

The Vissla 7 Seas is an all-around performer. To start, the wetsuit is constructed with a thermal lining. As temperatures drop, your body will generate more heat. This heat is then trapped by the thermal layer to keep you warm.

The seams of this wetsuit keep excess water out due to the fact that they are double stitched, glued, and then taped over. The fabric of this wetsuit is also unique. Most wetsuits on the list are made with neoprene, but this wetsuit was made with nylon as well. This helps the wetsuit dry quicker than most, but also makes it very flexible and comfortable. To top things off, a front entry zipper makes the wetsuit easy to take on and off.

Phantom Aquatics Men’s Marine Shorty

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 65°F to 80°F
  • Thickness: 2.5 mm
Features
  • 3-Dimensional Anatomic Modeling Allows The Wetsuit To Fit Very Comfortably
  • Velcro Neck Fastener Keeps Water Out At the Neck
  • 2.5 mm Of Neoprene Combined With Flatlock Seams Is Extra Flexible

BEST FOR COMFORTABLE WARM WATER SURFING

If you are planning to surf in warm water, you may prefer a short-sleeved wetsuit like this one. This wetsuit was designed to fit the body better than others. The anatomical design will hug your body, which will prevent chafing underneath the arms and other sensitive areas.

The flatlock seams of the wetsuit are more flexible than blindstitched seams, even though they won’t keep water out as well. That being said, you won’t need to worry as much about keeping cold water out of your suit because you’ll be surfing in warmer conditions. If you want a short-sleeved wetsuit that is comfortable and affordable, this wetsuit is for you.

O’Neill Reactor II 2mm

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: 83% Nylon / 17% Spandex
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 60°F to 80°F

Features
  • Patented Ultraflex Premium Neoprene Gives The Wetsuit Great Mobility
  • Seamless Paddle Zones Reduces Chafing At Important Areas
  • Foam Around The Neck Keeps Water Out And Wetsuit Comfortable
  • Features UV Protection To Keep Your Skin Safe In Extreme Sun
O’Neill Reactor II 2mm

BEST SHORT SLEEVED WETSUIT

If you consistently surf in warm water, this is the wetsuit for you. It’s a short sleeved wetsuit, which means the sleeves stop before the elbows and the legs stop right above the knee. However, it also features UV protection that keeps your skin safe in direct sunlight.

Spandex is used in the construction of this wetsuit, which makes it very comfortable and flexible. This may be one of the most mobile wetsuits on the list. With this wetsuit, seams were removed from areas that are traditionally prone to chafing. O’Neill is constantly improving its products, but this one is near perfect for warm water surfers.

Hevto 3 mm

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: Neoprene/ Nylon Elastic
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 50°F to 67°F
  • Thickness: 3 mm
Features
  • Suitable For Surfing, SCUBA Diving, Kayaking, Swimming, And Other Water Sports
  • Extra Long Leash On Back Zipper Makes Wetsuit Easy To Put On And Take Off
  • Lifetime Replacement Guarantee

BEST FOR BUDGET MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES

The Hevto 3 mm wetsuit is the most affordable full-body wetsuit on the list. Even though it doesn’t keep water out as well as other suits, it is a wetsuit that can be used for much more than surfing. This is due to the fact that the suit is built with buoyancy in mind. It helps you float in the water. Beginners will also love this wetsuit because of how easy it is to put on and take off. We recommend this suit to new surfers because you will be able to get a feel for if a wetsuit is necessary without spending a fortune.

Seavenger 3 mm Odyssey

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 65°F - 80°F
  • Thickness: 3 mm
Features
  • Super Stretch Panels In The Knee And Armpit Makes Wetsuit Great For Multi-Sport Athletes
  • Tough Chest Fabric Withstands Continual Rubbing On The Surfboard
  • Knee Pads And Shoulder Pads Offer Ultimate Comfort And Protection
  • Extra Long Leash On Zipper Makes Wetsuit Easy To Put On And Take Off

BEST FOR BUDGET, WARM WATER SURFERS

This wetsuit is the only full-length wetsuit on this list that is designed for warmer temperatures. It won’t keep you warm in cold waters, but it will be comfortable. The fabric that is used underneath the armpits and knees stretches more than the fabric used in other areas of the wetsuit.

The fabric used on the chest is also unique. It provides more padding and grip than other wetsuits. There are also pads at the shoulders and knees. All of these features combined make this wetsuit durable and long lasting. At a low price point, this wetsuit is ideal for beginners who want a full bodysuit.

O’Neill Epic 3/2 Full

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Blindstitched
  • Temperature Range: 50°F to 68°F
  • Thickness: 3/2 mm
Features
  • Very Comfortable Neck Closure With 2 Different Points Of Closure
  • Seams Are Glued To Keep Water Out

O’Neill Epic 3/2 Full

BEST FOR A VARIETY OF COLOR OPTIONS

This O’Neill wetsuit is ideal for women who want a stylish wetsuit. There is a large variety of color options available, so you’ll be able to find a wetsuit that fits your vibe. The wetsuit has a wide temperature range because it keeps water out better than other wetsuits. The seams are blindstiched and glued. The neck also has two closures, which also helps to keep water out. This wetsuit is comfortable, stylish, and durable.

O’Neill PsychoTech 5.5/4 mm

Specs
  • Material: Hydrophobic Neoprene and Rubber
  • Seams: Blindstitched
  • Temperature Range: 40°F to 64°F
  • Thickness: 5.5/4 mm
Features
  • Foam Rubber Core For Warmth And Comfort
  • Trapped Air Technology With Quick-Dry Properties For Ultimate Warmth
  • Super-Seal Cuffs Provide Secure Fit
  • Includes A Hood For Keeping Your Head Warm
O’Neill PsychoTech 5.5/4 mm

BEST FOR COLD WATER

This wetsuit is a beast and is ideal for frigid temperatures. Instead of being made with just neoprene, it has a rubber layer to keep water out extremely well.

There are multiple things that set this wetsuit apart from others. First, it’s the thickest wetsuit on the list but is also made with an internal firewall. This thermal lining generates more heat the longer you stay out in the cold.

Second, it also comes with a hood to keep your head warm. Finally, the cuffs at the wrists and ankles will seal out water better than any other wetsuit. If you’re going on a nordic surfing adventure, get this wetsuit. You’ll freeze otherwise.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFING WETSUIT

MATERIAL

Most wetsuits on the list are made with neoprene. Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is very water resistant. It also is very flexible, making it ideal for usage in water sports.

Companies like O’Neill and Roxy specialize in wetsuits and make their own unique fabric. This often features a blend of neoprene and spandex, which allows the wetsuit to fit tighter while remaining flexible.

However, wetsuits made with higher-end fabrics tend to be much more expensive than the rest. If you want a cheaper wetsuit, consider buying one that isn’t made with 100% neoprene. In order to make the wetsuit more affordable, companies use a combination of neoprene and nylon. The one benefit of this, other than the lower cost, is that they dry more quickly so you won’t be hanging out in a soaking wet suit for long.

SEAMS

In order to fit snugly on your body, a wetsuit is made by stitching multiple fabric panels together. These panels are sewn together in a variety of different ways. The type of seams that your wetsuit has will impact the comfort and flexibility of the suit, as well as the ability for water to enter into your wetsuit. The types of seams are explained below:

BLINDSTITCHED
Blindstitched means that the two seams are glued together, and then sewn halfway through the material. Water stays out of seams very well, but the wetsuit is also more flexible and durable with blindstitched seams. The only downfall to these seams is that they tend to cause more chafing on the skin.

DOUBLE BLINDSTITCHED
This sort of stitching is used on thicker wetsuits. The seam is sewn halfway through on both sides, but typically features tape or glue to keep water out. These seams keep water out extremely well, but tend to chafe more than any other type of seam.

FLATLOCK
This sort of stitching includes one piece of fabric overlayed slightly on the other, and then the two are stitched completely together. This seam is very strong and durable. However, there are a lot of holes made in the process, making it more ideal for warm surfing as water is more likely to enter due to the holes. One benefit of flatlock seams is less chafing on the skin.

TEMPERATURE RANGE

Each wetsuit is promoted as having a specific temperature range, which is very important to keep in mind as you are deciding which wetsuit is for you.

There are a few different factors that make certain wetsuits warmer than others. Thicker wetsuits are warmer than thinner ones. Be sure to review if your wetsuit is the same thickness throughout the entire suit or only thicker at the chest.

A thick wetsuit will be warmer, but also more constricting in terms of mobility. Also, the types of seams will impact how much water enters into your suit. Wet suits with flatlock seams will be a bit more chilly than suits with blindstiched or double blindstitched seams.

THICKNESS

What does #/# mm mean? The first number is the thickness of the wetsuit at the chest, and the second number is the thickness of the material at the limbs and back. Higher quality wetsuits are thicker at the chest for two reasons. First, they keep the chest warmer and in turn, keep the entire body warmer. Second, surfing wetsuits wear down at the chest fastest because of all the time spent paddling on a board.

The thicker your wetsuit is, the warmer it will be. That being said, thicker wetsuits aren’t as flexible as thinner ones.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

EXTRA LONG LEASH ON BACK ZIPPER

The zippers on wetsuits are typically on the back. Without a leash on your zipper, you’ll need a friend to help you take your wetsuit on and off.

INTERIOR KEY POCKET

Leaving your keys at the beach is never a good idea. A small key pocket allows you to keep your keys with you while surfing. They are typically at the ankle so they stay out of your way while paddling or surfing.

INTERNAL THERMAL LINING

As water temperatures drop, your body will work harder to generate body heat. A thermal lining on the inside of your wetsuit will trap in this heat. In colder temperatures, this is an essential feature to have.

KNEE PADS AND SHOULDER PADS

Wetsuits with pads at the shoulders and knees are not just more comfortable when paddling –  they can save you from a serious injury when wiping out. The worst feeling is having a board crush into your knee or shoulder, but having pads on your wetsuit will keep you safer.

SEAMLESS PADDLE ZONES

The paddle zones are at the shoulders and armpits. They take on the most strain when paddling out to catch waves and are very prone to chafing. Removing the seams makes chafing less likely to occur.

BEST ALL-AROUND LEASH

Looking for the best leash on the list? Look no further. The Creatures of Leisure leash is a very specialized leash. It’s made with a unique DNA flex mold, which absorbs impact better than any other coil on the list. This is especially nice when you’re paddling out to catch waves. The leash was specifically designed for medium size waves, but it can handle massive waves just as well as other leashes on the list. You also won’t have to worry about the cuff slipping off as it comes with Creatures of Leisure’s patented non-slip technology.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BODYBOARD LEASH

CONNECTION

It’s important to consider where you want your leash to connect — your wrist or your bicep. If the leash is connected to your bicep, it will stretch out more than if it is connected to your wrist. For this reason, bodyboarders who ride drop-knee will prefer a leash that connects to their wrist. Bodyboarders who use their arms to catch waves will prefer to have the leash connect to their bicep. If you want to play it safe, purchase a leash that can be connected to both parts comfortably.

LEASH PLUG INCLUDED

Without a leash plug, you won’t have anything to attach your bodyboarding leash to. Most of the leashes on this list come with a leash plug. If you already have one on your board, you can save the extra plug for when your old one blows out. Before you use your new plug, be sure you know how to install a leash plug without damaging your board.

SWIVEL

Without a swivel on your leash, you risk the leash becoming tangled around your arm. Even though all bodyboarding leashes are coiled, there is still a risk that you can become tangled in the event of a big wave. Leashes with marine-grade metal or stainless steel metal will last much longer than those without.

WARRANTY/SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

If you’re buying your first ever bodyboard leash, you may not have much of an idea what you are looking for in a leash. If you’re skeptical about whether or not a leash is right for you, buy one that comes with a warranty or satisfaction guarantee.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DOUBLE SWIVEL

This means that the leash has swivels at both ends, near the cuff and on the leash plug. This allows for ultimate versatility and flexibility.

EASY RELEASE TAB

There is always a possibility that your leash gets trapped on something underwater. This can be fatal if you can’t remove your leash. This is where an easy release tab comes in handy. You can unstrap your leash and avoid a fatal accident.

HOOK AND LOOP WEBBING

Hook and loop webbing makes putting your leash on much easier. Instead of just strapping together with velcro, the strap will first go through a small loop of plastic. You can put the velcro through this and slip your hand through the cuff before attaching the leash.

Reviews - The Best Leash for Surfboards

Dakine John John Florence Comp

Specs
  • Colors: 5
  • Length: 6 ft
  • Thickness: 4.7 mm
Features
  • Longer Rail Saver Protects Board In Serious Waves
  • Cushioned Neoprene Ankle Cuff With Heavy Duty Velcro
  • Swivels Feature Highly Durable Material, Making The Leash Long Lasting

BEST FOR SHORTBOARD SURFERS

Dakine makes a wide variety of surfboard leashes, but this one was built to withstand all sorts of conditions. It’s extremely lightweight and thin, and you’ll hardly even notice it around your ankle. Don’t let that trick you into thinking that it can’t take a beating though. It will stay connected in the toughest of surf conditions. To top things off, the ankle cuff is cushioned and extremely comfortable. If your board is shorter than 6 ft, this might just be the leash for you.

WOOWAVE Premium 9

Specs
  • Colors: 9
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 7 mm
Features
  • Padded Ankle Cuff For Comfortable Surfing
  • Lifetime Warranty -- If Leash Snaps, Manufacturer Will Replace It At No Charge
  • Hidden Key Pocket In Cuff
  • Comes With A Free Waterproof Phone And Wallet Case

BEST FOR BUDGET SURFERS

The Woowave Premium leash is significantly cheaper than any other leash on this list. It’s 7 mm thick, which creates a bit more drag but ensures that it won’t snap. In the event that it does snap though, Woowave will replace it for free. To top things off, your purchase includes a waterproof wallet and phone case. If you aren’t sure what you want out of your surf leash, this is a great first leash.

Alpenflow Premium

Specs
  • Colors: 4
  • Length: 7 ft
  • Thickness: 7 mm
Features
  • Easy Pull Tab For Quick Release If Leash Becomes Stuck
  • High-Density Nylon Rail Saver Makes Leash Long Lasting
  • Cuff Colors Match Leash Cord Color For Great Swag
  • Padded Neoprene Ankle Cuff

BEST FOR QUICK RELEASE

The Alpenflow Premium is truly that — a premium leash. It’s short and thick, which more extreme surfers will find necessary. It also has a quick-release system. Although rare, your board can get caught on a reef and keep you trapped underwater. A quick-release system will let you remove your leash quickly and swim to safety. If you are planning to surf reef breaks more than beach breaks, this might be the leash for you.

Wave Tribe ECO

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 7 ft
  • Thickness: N/A
Features
  • Key Stash In The Cuff Allows You To Keep Your Keys On Yourself While Surfing
  • One Year Replacement Guarantee -- Your Break It, They Replace It
  • Made With Recycled Materials
  • Swivels At Both Ends Of Leash Ensures Leash Doesn’t Get Tangled

BEST FOR ECO-CONSCIOUS SURFERS

Unfortunately, plastic’s impact on the environment doesn’t hide in the ocean. This leash helps combat that by being one of the only leashes made with recycled materials. It also features a double swivel, which means the leash will rotate at your ankle and near the board. This allows you to surf without worry about the leash wrapping around your leg. To top things off, the cuff features some pretty awesome graphics so you can look cool while you surf too!

DAKINE Longboard

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 6.5 mm
Features
  • Marine Grade Stainless Steel Swivels For Durability
  • High-Grade Velcro Keeps Cuff In Place
  • Maximum Strength Leash Stretches Long When Falls Occur
  • Detachable Rail Saver For Customizable Performance

BEST FOR BEGINNER SURFERS

If you aren’t certain about what you want your leash to do, this is a great option for you. The rail saver on this leash is removable. Removing the rail saver will reduce drag in the water, but make the edges of your board more prone to damage. Most importantly, this leash will progress with you as you get better at surfing. It can handle all types of waves and all types of surfboards.

FCS Freedom

Specs
  • Colors: 6
  • Length: 6 ft
  • Thickness: N/A
Features
  • Nylon Used In Leash Makes Leash Extremely Thin
  • Silicone Grip Print At Cuff Keeps Cuff Attached To Ankle
  • Neoprene Padding In The Cuff Protects Your Ankle
  • Specifically Designed For Waves Under 5 Feet

BEST FOR SMALL WAVE SURFERS

FCS brings new innovation to the table with this surf leash. Instead of being made solely with urethane like other surf leashes, it is constructed with nylon yarn wrapped around a durable cord. It’s the only leash on the list that is made this way, allowing it to be extremely thin.

It may stay out of your way and have very little drag, but surfers have been a bit disappointed with this leash for other reasons. In larger waves, the leash stretches out without recoiling or may straight-up rip. For this reason, this leash is recommended for use in small waves. One positive feature of the leash, though, is the silicone on the inside of the cuff. The leash will stay in place on your ankle better than other leashes.

Ocean Earth Premium One-XT

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 8 mm
Features
  • Extremely Durable Cuff For Long Lasting Performance
  • Leash Is Made With Extremely Tough Materials
  • End Of The Leash Is Made To Be Easily Attached To Surfboard
  • Anti-Corrosive Steel Is Used In Swivel Joint For Extreme Durability

BEST FOR DURABILITY

This leash from Ocean and Earth can withstand a beating. The cord itself is made with extremely tough material, but it’s also thicker than other leashes. The swivel joints are also made with anti-corrosive steel that will withstand years of use. And the cuff is made thicker than most. All of these things combined create a leash that won’t need to be replaced.

Creatures of Leisure Reliance

Specs
  • Colors: 8
  • Length: 8 ft
  • Thickness: 7mm
Features
  • Stretches Up To 5x Original Length
  • Covered By A Two Year Warranty
  • Hook And Weave Velcro Design Is Lighter And Stronger Than Traditional Velcro
  • Unbreakable Swivel Keeps Leash From Tangling Around

BEST FOR ABSORBING WAVE CONTACT

Creatures of Leisure is respected by surfers and surf product companies alike. In fact, they were the very first company to introduce the swivel to surfboard leashes. They innovate the traditional leash with this one as well. What makes it stand apart is a patented DNA Flex Mold, created to absorb wave impact. This makes the leash strong, flexible, and durable. Creatures of Leisure makes very quality products, and this one does not disappoint.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFBOARD LEASH

CORD LENGTH

The cord is the long part of the leash that connects your ankle to your surfboard. The correct length of leash for you will depend on the height of your surfboard. A good rule of thumb is to purchase a leash that is equal in length to or slightly longer than your surfboard.

Unless you are an expert surfer, don’t get a leash that is shorter than your board. If your leash is shorter than your board, you risk falling on top of your surfboard or allowing for your surfboard to crash into you after a fall. However, you also shouldn’t try and purchase the longest leash possible. A leash that’s too long will drag in the water, get tangled around your ankle, or allow your board to hit other surfers in the water.

CUFF

The cuff of a surfboard leash is the part that connects to your ankle. They are always made with velcro, which allows them to stay tight on your ankle. A cuff that shifts while surfing can cause irritation on your ankle. If you’ve experienced this in the past, a cuff with silicone may be for you. Some cuffs on this list are padded, making them extremely comfortable. Others have a quick release feature, which can save you in the event of your leash getting wrapped around a reef.

RAIL SAVER

This is the part of the leash that directly attaches to the surfboard. The larger the rail saver is, the more protected your board will be during a fall. If the rail saver is small, there is the risk that the leash puts a lot of pressure on the edges of the board and potentially damages it. A rail saver extends the leash and in turn, eliminates pressure on the edges of the surfboard. The downside of a longer rail saver is more drag in the water.

SWIVEL

Leashes are much more than cords that connect your ankle to your board. Most leashes have small swivels joints at both sides of the leash, near your ankle and near the surfboard. This allows for the cord to whip around in the water without getting tangled around your foot. Swivels that are made with anti-corrosive steel will last longer than those without.

THICKNESS

A thin surfboard leash is better for more experienced surfers. The leash will not drag as much and is also much less likely to get wrapped around your leg. The one downside though, is that this leash is much more susceptible to breaking. If you want a thin leash, consider buying one with a good warranty. Thicker leashes are better for beginners because they can withstand the wave impact that comes with falling. If you want a leash that is going to last a long time, go thicker. If you want a leash that will perform at a higher experience level, go with a thinner leash.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DETACHABLE RAIL SAVER

A detachable rail saver allows you to choose between two different priorities — protecting the edges of your board or having the leash drag less in the water.

KEY STASH

If you’re going out to surf alone, you know it can be a hassle trying to decide where to leave your car keys. Some leashes have key stashes in the cuff, which allow you to keep your keys on your body while you surf.

WARRANTY

Due to the nature of their job, surfboard leashes snap. That’s why leashes with a warranty are great! They allow your leash to be replaced for free.

BEST FOR WATERPROOF PROTECTION

Creatures of Leisure is a respected name in the surfing community. Each of their products is tested to ensure they perform at the highest level possible. This bag features the companies’ own patented Diamond-Tech fabric. This fabric is waterproof and will shelter your bag from extreme elements. The padding on the bag may not be the thickest, but this bag will last for a really long time.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFBOARD BAG

LENGTH

The last thing you want is to order a bag that doesn’t fit your surfboard. That being said, you also don’t want a bag that isn’t snug. A loose fit will allow your surfboard to shift around during transportation and make it much more prone to dings, nicks, and scratches. Make sure to measure the length of your longest board you plan to use the bag for before deciding which bag length is right for you.

SIZE OF BAG

What do you want out of your surfboard bag? If you need a bag that will allow you to store your surfboard at home, throw it in the back of your trunk, and take it to the beach, then a bag that holds a single surfboard should do just fine. These bags, however, don’t feature as much padding as bags that hold multiple surfboards.

Bags that hold multiple surfboards, often referred to as coffins, are far more suited for long-distance travel. For this reason, they have much more padding for protecting the board. Serious surfers prefer a larger bag because they can take all their boards to the beach and then decide which board they want to surf on.

PADDING

How protective do you want your bag to be? Surfboards can take a beating while being transported. If you’re careful, you can get away with less padding. But if you don’t want to worry about your board getting dinged up during travel, then consider a bag with more padding to for maximum protection. And keep in mind that the amount of padding in a bag will also affect how heavy it is.

TRANSPORTATION

A surfboard bag makes transporting your surfboard simple and hassle-free. Most bags feature an adjustable shoulder strap and a hand strap for carrying, which makes them easy to transport. However, if you are buying a larger or bulkier surfboard bag, consider buying a bag with wheels. It will be far easier for you to navigate through busy airports or public transportation stations with a wheelie bag than one you have to carry by hand.

HEAT PROTECTION

Surfboards have a protective laminate layer that prevents the board from long-term damage. If your board is exposed to too much heat, this protective layer can start to delaminate (or “de-lam” as surfers call it.) Surfboard bags prevent de-lamming from happening in two different ways:

UV Reflective Fabric: A layer of reflective fabric will shield your surfboard from the damage of direct sunlight. If you leave your other boards in the bag while you’re out catching waves, a bag with this technology is important to protect your boards while they sit in the sun waiting to be used.

Ventilation: A bag with ventilation will keep your board cool if you plan to store it in a warm place, like an attic or the back of your car, for instance.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

COMPRESSION STRAPS

If you happen to purchase a larger surfboard bag, compression straps will protect your board from shifting around in the bag. This will ultimately keep your boards better protected.

FLEXIBLE TAIL SECTION

Bags with a flexible tail section allow you to store your surfboard without removing the fins. You will still want to be extra cautious while transporting your boards even when your bag comes with a flexible tail section. But bags with this feature will get your board to the beach without having to remove the fins.

INTERIOR BOARD DIVIDER

Bags that fit multiple boards typically feature an interior board divider. This protects your boards from damaging one another during transportation.

ZIPPER LOCATED AT THE FIN

Bags with a zipper located at the fin will allow you to slide your board in and out of the bag.

The wax is made with local materials on the company’s farm in California. What makes this wax unique though is the fact that your purchase comes with a free coin bag. This coin bag is best used for storing your used blocks of wax.

BEST FOR SOFT BOARDS

Sticky Bumps makes a surf wax for everyone. This specific wax is designed for soft boards, which require a unique sort of wax — a soft wax that sticks on your board in moderate and warmer temperatures. It won’t get oily as the day goes on, allowing you to stick to your board and catch some big waves.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF WAX

COAT TYPE

BASECOAT: This is the first layer of wax that you should apply to your surfboard. A basecoat wax is harder and stickier than topcoat wax. This allows you to apply a layer of wax over it that is more suited to the temperature of the water. The basecoat will allow the topcoat to last longer to help you maintain balance as you surf.

TOPCOAT: This is the layer of wax that you put on after applying a basecoat. It will make the bumps of your basecoat more pronounced, but also seal the bumps to make the coat last longer. Topcoats are rated for specific water temperatures. Using the right temperature of wax is important if you want your wax to last for a long time. However, don’t apply too much wax! This will actually make it harder to surf.

SCENT

The best thing about surf wax is that it smells good. While coconut is the most common scent, some companies are changing it up by offering bubble gum, berry, and jasmine scents. After waxing your board, leave it in your car so it smells fresh after your surf session.

TEMPERATURE

COLD: 58°F and below. This wax is very soft, so don’t let it sit out in the sun too long! If you use it in warm temperatures, it will be oily after catching a few waves.

COOL: 58°F – 68°F. This wax is semi-hard and will hold up in moderate temperatures.

WARM: 68°F – 75°F. This wax will melt off your board if used in tropical temperatures.

TROPICAL: 75°F and above. This wax is harder than others, allowing it to stick on your board for a long time without melting.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE COLORS

It’s actually recommended to purchase a surf wax that’s a different color from your basecoat. This will allow you to recognize when the topcoat is wearing off, and it’s time to apply more wax.

NON-TOXIC AND BIODEGRADABLE

Surf wax can be harmful to the environment, which is why it’s important to buy one that is non-toxic and biodegradable.

PACKAGING CAN BE USED AS STORAGE

If a bar of surf wax comes packaged in a box, you can store partially used bars of wax inside of it. Some bars come wrapped in plastic, which can be frustrating. Some bars, like Matunas Base Coat, come with a free coin bag for storage.

The respected Swedish manufacturer designed the Helis to be stylish and functional. The leather assists the glove in flexing easily as well as lending it a good amount of durability. What I like most about the Hestra Helis is how durably they’re constructed, making for a glove that will last you many seasons.

BEST BUDGET PICK

If you’re a recreational skier looking for a durable, well-constructed ski glove on a tight budget, these $70 Gordinis are worth some serious consideration.

Gordini designed the GTX Storm Troopers IIs from a combination of leather and synthetic materials, resulting in an affordable glove that doesn’t match the quality of premium models but does a solid job at what’s important — keeping your hands warm and dy. The MegaLoft synthetic insulation is of quality build and provides for ample warmth, even when wet. The breathable, stretch-woven shell sports a GORE-TEX insert. There’s a zippered hand warmer pocket, as well.

What I like most about the Storm Trooper II glove is how generously they loft despite the affordable price.

BEST SKI MITTENS

On the coldest adventures when the elements are so extreme that gloves just won’t do the trick, the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts are sure to suffice.

The warmth of these mittens come from the intentionally built liner with 340 grams of PrimaLoft insulation, fleece coating, and coverage with Black Diamond’s proprietary BDry waterproof fabric. These gloves come with an insulated liner and a hanging loop, which would make them a conducive choice for use on cold, alpine climbs.

What I like most about the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts is that they come with an internal index finger slot that provides for an added degree of dexterity when needed.

Hestra Power Heater

Specs

BEST HEATED CHOICE

For those skiers who greatly benefit from a boost of heat when riding that first chair up the mountain — but don’t want to sacrifice weight and dexterity for the heavy systems of warmer, battery-heated gloves — consider the perfectly balanced Hestra Power Heater.

These gloves provide for adequate weather resistance, dexterity through the fingers, and ample durability. Although not as powerful as gloves with larger heating systems, the Hestra boasts a more streamlined profile, and the heating element is virtually unnoticeable when not in use and a control button lets you adjust them to your optimal temperature.

What I like most about the Hestra Power Heater gloves is the Fiberfill insulation integrated into the construction. It does a superior job at sealing in the warmth.

Arc’teryx Sabre

What makes this pair of ski gloves stand out is their superior breathability. The wrist strap allows you to really adjust how the gloves fit around your wrist. Even though most of the glove is made with nylon, the fingers are made from leather. This will keep your fingers warm in extremely low temperatures.

BEST LEATHER GLOVES

With each and every ski season, Hestra gloves seem to get more and more popular. Spurring their growth is an all-leather construction, which molds to your hands over time. These gloves are very comfortable and also super warm. What they lack is waterproofing abilities. However, don’t let that dissuade you from buying a pair of these gloves. You’d have to soak the entire glove in water in order to feel the exterior moisture on your bare hand inside the glove. Due to their leather construction, they also last longer than polyester or nylon gloves. Scoop up this pair of high quality leather gloves if you’re planning on skiing in nice weather and want superior warmth on the slopes!

If you have notoriously cold hands and you’ve tried just about every glove out there with no success, it’s time to invest in this pair of gloves. They are heavier and bulkier than others, but for good reason. The gloves have leashes and clips, which will alleviate any concern that you may lose an expensive glove. These gloves may not be the most comfortable, but they certainly are the warmest.

Marmot Randonnee

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Color: Black
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Gender: Men’s / Women’s
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: Gore-Tex Inserts
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Falcon-Grip Articulation Makes Gloves Durable And Easy To Use
  • Patented DriClime Lining Keeps Hands Moisture Free
  • Breathable Gore-Tex Glove Inserts For Ultimate Waterproofing Protection

BEST SKI GLOVE FOR SWEATY HANDS

The Marmot Randonee is a very affordable glove. It has removable Gore-Tex inserts which help keep your hands dry. On top of that, their patented DriClime lining on the inside of the glove has moisture-wicking abilities. Sweaty hands aren’t a good thing, especially on cold days. These gloves combat your natural perspiration better than any other gloves on the list. That being said, they do not provide as much warmth as other gloves on the list, so if you tend to run cold, look for another pair. But if you know you get sweaty palms before every descent, then these gloves are ideal for you!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING GLOVES FOR SKIING

EXTERIOR FABRIC

What’s better — polyester or leather? The truth is, it comes down to personal preference. Leather gloves are more comfortable, but they lock in moisture and become much heavier when wet. Polyester gloves are lighter and more waterproof, but often get much colder than leather gloves. If you want a balance between both, consider waterproofing your leather gloves.

INSULATION

The insulation of your ski glove will directly correlate to how cold or warm your hand is while you’re wearing the gloves. While the reviews vary from skier to skier, Primaloft Wool is the lightest and warmest insulation available. If you’ve had a pair of trusted gloves for years that are ready to be replaced and you know what type of insulation they had, we recommend you try to find a replacement pair with the same type of insulation.

SHORT CUFFS VS. LONG CUFFS

This debate will never be settled. Long cuffs are bulkier, but they can fit underneath (or over) your coat and will keep moisture out of your gloves and off your wrists. Short cuffs are much less of a nuisance, but you are prone to snow getting into your gloves if you opt for the short cuffs. In the end, whether you choose long or short cuffs will be a matter of personal preference.

REMOVABLE LINERS

Removable liners are great for spring days. If the temperature gets too warm, you’ll be able to remove your big, bulky gloves and enjoy the slopes with something much lighter on your hands.

WATERPROOF

Waterproof ski gloves are a lifesaver in extreme snowstorms. Most of the gloves on this list boast being waterproof, but some fabrics are better than others. If you want your hands to truly stay moisture-free, get yourself a pair of Gore-Tex gloves. This is the best waterproof fabric.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CORD ADJUSTMENT ON CUFFS

This will allow you to tighten or loosen the cuffs of your gloves, so you can put them on and take them off easily and ensure they’ll stay in place to prevent snow or moisture from entering at your wrists.

GRIPPING ABILITIES

The palm of a glove is particularly important for skiers. The better the gripping ability, the less you have to worry about having your poles slide out from under you. Pay attention to the material of the glove and make sure the glove you choose has a grippy palm material so you don’t accidentally let your ski poles slip through your gloved hands.

PRE-CURVED DESIGN

Gloves with this feature will feel broken in right from the get-go. They are much more comfortable when gripping something than other, non pre-curved gloves.
