THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FOAM SURFBOARD

COST

This is common sense really, but if you’re just trying out surfing for the first time, thinking of getting your kids into the waves, or if you just surf a few times a year on vacation, it might be wise not to blow your latest paycheck on the most expensive board you can find.

Much like clothing brands, you’d be surprised how many boards are made of similar materials using a similar manufacturing process, but are miles apart on the sale price scale. It’d be much wiser to read up on the information below (size, materials to look for, etc.) so you know what you’re looking for, and can then narrow it down to which ones fit your budget.

SIZE AND VOLUME

Size does matter when it comes to surfboards. Though generally a bigger board means it’ll be easier to balance and stand up on, it is possible to get a board that is too big for you, which would result in feeling like you’re on a large raft with no means of steering power or control. And we don’t want that, right? So, it’s good to find the right size board. Generally your board should be at least 2 feet taller than you but no more than 3.5 feet over your standing height. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, so you might find it useful to check out this sizing guide.

Volume is arguably the most important factor to consider to get the right board for you. The volume of your board is the total amount of space that it takes up. Usually we calculate volume by a simple calculation of length x width x height, but the shape of a surfboard makes this a little trickier, so they’re generally measured in cubic litres (L).

As a general rule, a beginner surfer should be riding a board whose volume matches their body weight in kg. So if you weigh 80kg, look for a board around 80L. This means you’ll have a board that is both buoyant and maneuverable in the water. Check out this volume chart to find out what volume of board you should be looking for (if you’re buying a foam board, you should look in the beginner column).

MATERIAL

Generally the inside (core) of foam boards are made up of any of the following materials. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but all are good to look for when buying your first foam board.

Polyurethane (PU) – Very buoyant. Strong, durable and easy to shape. Keep in mind that disposal of this type of plastic poses a hazardous threat to the environment.

Polystyrene (PS) – Extremely buoyant. Light, recyclable, and environmentally-friendly. Not quite as strong or durable as it’s Polyurethane counterpart however.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) – A version of the above, so it bears the same properties but essentially is uber lightweight.

Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene (IXPE) – Extremely fine celled microcellular foam that has excellent waterproof and shock absorbent properties (waterproof is good because it means the board won’t absorb water over time, which would make it more likely to sink).

Polypropylene (PP) – Very durable, resistant (strong in cold water), and lightweight plastic. Not easy to recycle, so not a great choice for the environment.

Bo-Toys Body Board

  • Type: Bodyboard
  • Length: 2’9”
  • Age: 3-6
  • Fins Included?: No
Features
  • Lightweight and Easy to Transport
  • Variety of Colors and Sizes to Choose From
  • Bottom Rear Channels (grooves on the underside of the board that enhance grip and prevent side-slipping in waves)

BEST FOR: TODDLERS AND INFANTS

Buying a surfboard straight away for your infant is not always the best idea. A bodyboard will allow you to stand alongside them in the whitewater and push them into the waves so they can get a flavor of what surfing might be like. The Bo-Toys Kids Bodyboard will allow you to do this in an affordable way, not to mention that it’s also super lightweight and easy to sling under your arm on a trip to the beach. If they enjoy shredding little waves on this board, then you can consider moving them up to a hybrid board.

Giantex 6′

Specs
  • Type: Softboard
  • Length: 6’
  • Age: 9-14
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Colorful Pattern And Design
  • 3” Thick (for increased buoyancy and stability)
  • Can Carry Riders Up To 200 lbs (fun for the whole family!)

BEST FOR: FAMILIES WITH ADVENTUROUS KIDS

This board is perfect for families with multiple kids and a small budget. It’s long, wide, and thick, meaning it’s super floaty and easy to catch waves on. It’s size and shape also means that it can accommodate a variety of different ages and abilities, so every member of the family can hop on and take it for a spin. Removable fins make the board easy for one or two people to carry under their arms.

South Bay Board Co 6’ Guppy

Specs
  • Type: Softboard
  • Length: 6’
  • Age: 9-14
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Beginner-friendly Shape (the rounded nose and slightly squared tail enhance stability and performance in the water)
  • Made From Long-lasting and Lightweight EPS Foam (so it’s durable and buoyant)
  • South Bay Board Co Diamond-Weave Underside (for extra speed when charging waves!)

BEST FOR: BEGINNERS WITH ROOM FOR PROGRESSION

This board will be your kid’s new best friend in the water. Made from strong, lightweight, and durable materials, it’s guaranteed to be stable and fast in the water, and it won’t break on you after a few uses. It’s a great board for beginners and intermediate surfers alike; the rounded nose and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Core will keep the board stable and afloat, whilst the slightly squared tail will increase speed and maneuverability as you gain confidence in the water.

Rock-It 4’11” CHUB

Specs
  • Type: Softboard
  • Length: 4’10”
  • Age: 8-12
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Manufactured in an Environmentally Sensitive Way
  • Zebra Patterned Bottom (apparently to deter sharks… but don’t tell the kids this!)
  • Dual Wood Stringers (rods of wood that run down the middle of the inside of the board for increased rigidity)

BEST FOR: YOUNG ASPIRING SURFERS

This is a fantastic board for younger kids who’ve had a few lessons and know they really want to give this surfing thing a go. The Rock-It board is a little more expensive than the other boards on our list, so if you just want a board that your kid can play with when you’re on vacation, this probably isn’t the best board for you. The board is thick and wide, giving it great stability and buoyancy. The extra width also means means it’ll be really easy for your aspiring pro surfer to catch whitewater waves. What’s more, there’s plenty of colors to choose from and they’re all bright – so you’ll be able to watch your little shredder happily from the beach!

Catch Surf Odysea

Specs
  • Type: Soft Longboard
  • Length: 7’/8’
  • Age: 12-18
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Eye-Catching Design
  • Large Volume (for increased float and stability)
  • Triple Wood Stringers (rods of wood that run down the middle of the inside of the board for increased rigidity)

BEST FOR: SMALL WAVES

This board is essentially a foam longboard. Traditionally, longboards are used on smaller waves and glide through the water effortlessly. Combining a softboard with a longboard therefore combines stability and buoyancy with a large surface area. This board will be fantastic fun in small waves and will give you a long ride, but keep in mind that these longer boards aren’t made for big waves – the board could snap in half! The Odysea Catch Surf Log is the perfect board for your teenager who loves romping in the small waves close to home or on vacation at a beach with minimal surf.

Catch Surf Thruster Stump

Specs
  • Type: Softboard
  • Length: 5’0
  • Age: 13-18
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Colorful Retro Design
  • 3 x Maple Wood Stringers For Enhances Stability And Rigidity
  • Tons of Float For Easy Wave Catching

BEST FOR: REGULAR RIDERS

This isn’t a cheap board, so this one is for the regular wave dwellers. If you go to surf spots on holiday regularly or live near a break and have a kid who lives to shred, this might be the board for them. Though it’s still a soft board, the 3-fin setup for excellent maneuverability and speed in the water. The design and color of the board is retro and stylish, too.

Liquid Shredder

Specs
  • Type: Softboard
  • Length: 7’0
  • Age: 12-18
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Streamlined Shape With Soft Board Composition (perfect for improving riders who need stability but want to go faster)
  • Dual Wooden Stringers (rods of wood that run down the middle of the inside of the board for increased rigidity)
  • Fins Included

BEST FOR: IMPROVING RIDERS

This board is great for total beginners and advancing novices who have a need for speed. The streamlined shape will allow for a really fast glide through the waves, while the softboard composition keeps you stable and afloat. What’s more, the board has two wooden rod stringers down the middle inside; this makes the board more rigid and durable and essentially, less likely to snap!

KONA SURF CO 4-4

Specs
  • Type: Hybrid Softboard/Bodyboard
  • Length: 4’4”
  • Age: 6-11
  • Fins Included?: Yes
Features
  • Hybrid Board (can be ridden as a bodyboard or add fins to make it into a surfboard)
  • Wide Board (for increased stability)
  • Bold Colors (for fun and flair!)

BEST FOR: BODYBOARDERS WHO ASPIRE TO BE SURFERS

This is the board for your younger children who race down to the waves with their bodyboard as soon as you arrive at the beach. It’s a great budget-friendly transition board that will allow your little one to have a play at both bodyboarding and surfing. With easily removable fins and a stable amount of width, it serves as a great little hybrid board – fantastic also if you have smaller kids that want to bodyboard, and older kids that want to jump on after and try their hand at surfing!

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A SURFBOARD

Buying a surfboard for your child will be a similar process to buying a beginner’s surfboard. That is, unless you have little tykes who started shredding before they could walk, in which case they’ll probably tell you what they want (and if they don’t – check out boards 9 and 10 in this article). If your little one’s never popped-up in their life, there are a few things you should consider before coughing up the cash to pay for their first ever surfboard.

COST

Kids grow fast, there’s no getting around that. And in the same way that you would buy a wetsuit a few sizes too big so it will last them while they grow, you could consider doing something similar with a surfboard. When it comes to beginner surfboards, bigger is generally better anyway. A bigger surface area means it’s easier to balance and stay stable, and therefore easier to catch waves. As you progress, you usually move towards a shorter board, but hey – if your kid grows and the board stays the same, this will have the same effect!

In the same regard, you should probably aim not to spend unnecessary amounts of money on a board that will need changing up in a few years. If you’re looking to help your kid have some fun in the waves while on vacation, go for a board that won’t break the bank and won’t matter if your kid finds that surfing isn’t actually for them. Check out this Dad’s guide to what you should spend on a board for you kid.

TYPE

There are a myriad of boards out there and knowing which one to go for can be confusing. Perhaps the most important thing to look for is whether the board is hard or soft (made of foam). Beginners and kids alike should go for a foam board (also known as a softboard) because they are more stable, buoyant and well, soft! These boards are generally no bigger than 7’ and will allow your children to play in the waves without getting hurt.

Once your little surf star starts to progress and can consistently catch waves, they might want to make the move to a harder board. Hardtop boards are generally made of carbon or fiberglass and are less stable, but can go a lot faster and are far easier to turn. The most beginner-friendly hardboard to move to would be a Mini-mal.

SIZE

There’s no easy formula to choosing which size of surfboard to get. It depends on the type of board you want to go for (i.e. soft board or hardboard), what kind of waves you’ll be riding in, your height, your weight, and your ability level.

If your kid is a complete novice, you’ll want a board that is at least 1-2 feet taller than them. Remember that a large surface area will give the rider more stability and flotation, but if you accidentally choose a board that’s too big for your kid then they’ll have difficulty getting it anywhere! Check out this sizing guide for a more thorough explanation of how to choose the proper size for your first surfboard.

FINS

The majority of surfboards will have fins attached to the bottom. Fins are located on the underside rear of the board to improve directional stability and to enable steering through foot movement.

There is much debate about what amount and configuration of fins is most effective, but to be perfectly honest, you needn’t worry about the fin setup with a beginner board. In the whitewater it would be hard to tell the difference anyway.

Most beginner / kid-friendly boards will either have two fins alongside each other or three in a triangle formation. These configurations allow for hold and stability in the waves and the ability to turn the board left and right. It might be worth looking for a board with removable fins, as this means the board will be easier to carry and transport.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

EPS

Stands for Expanded Polystyrene. This is the most common material that the inside (core) of the board will be made from. It is known for its superior buoyancy and is lightweight, too.

WHITEWATER

The section of water where the waves are breaking. This is the perfect spot for soft boards as the power of the waves will easily push the board forward without too much paddling.

DECK

The top side of the board.

TAIL

The rear end of the board.

NOSE

The front end of the board.

Skimboarding is one of those sports that falls somewhere between riding a push scooter and being a pro champion surfer. Combining the styles and skills of skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing, skimboarding can be as fun or as challenging as you like. Skimboarding can be practiced on the shoreline, where you glide to meet an incoming breaking wave and ride it back to shore. Or it can be done on “flatland”, meaning you skim the wash of the waves or river inlets without catching the shorebreaks.

Maybe you’re a seasoned skimmer who likes to ride breaking waves back to shore, or perhaps you’re just a water lover and you think the idea of riding a skateboard with no wheels on water sounds like a fun time. Either way, with such a diversity of riding and board styles comes a very diverse market for skimboards, which is why we at The Adventure Junkies are here to make your job easier to help you find the best skimboard for your riding needs.

USE

As touched upon in the introduction to this article, skimboarding can be as fun casual or as serious and professional as you want to make it. It’s worth considering how and when you’re going to be using your skimboard as these factors will answer other questions about cost, size, and materials to look for.

Skimboards have two main uses: for gliding towards shorebreak waves and riding them back to shore; or for riding flat, sandy waters such as the wash of beach waves or inland water areas such as river banks and creeks.

Naturally, one (the latter) is a little easier than the other, so if you’re just thinking about sticking to flatland skimming for now, look for boards intended for this use. They’re usually cheaper and made from wood. If you’d like to progress into catching waves, look for boards with a greater volume that are made from foam or fiberglass. Keep reading for more detail on materials.

MATERIAL

Generally, skimboards are made up of one of two materials: foam or wood. Foam boards are more buoyant, flexible, lighter and have lots of give. As such, they’re better for the more seasoned skimmer looking to catch shorebreak waves.

Wood boards are great for beginners and flatland skimming. They’re heavier, stiffer, provide a smooth flow along flat waves, and are generally cheaper. Check out Skate Pro’s handy guide for more information about skimboard material.

SIZE

Weight and height are important factors when it comes to choosing the right board, as well as the type of skimboarding you’re going to be doing. It’s important you get this right as it will affect balance, speed, ease of movement, and general stability.

A skimboard that’s too small has a similar effect to using a surfboard that’s too small for you; you’ll have little balance and buoyancy and you’ll struggle to learn easily. A board that’s too big, on the other hand, will lack speed and ease, so it’s essential to find just the right fit for you. Have a good look at this sizing chart to figure out which size board you need.

Despite being disregarded for years as a cop-out for surfing, bodyboarding is gaining real traction as an adventure sport. When you’re so close to the water, you have the potential to experience a bigger and better thrill from the waves on a bodyboard than you do on a surfboard. Plus, the best bodyboards are generally cheaper than surfboards, require fewer repairs, and are far easier to transport. It’s also an excellent sport for those for whom surfing presents balance or mobility issues, and it offers a much more immediate reward than learning to surf can – mostly because it’s so much easier!

So, sounds like a great new hobby, right? Well, that’s why we at the Adventure Junkies have curated the best of the best for you, so you can find the right bodyboard to suit all your water needs. Whether you’re a beginner looking to add an extra element of fun to your ocean adventures, or a seasoned bodyboarder hoping to improve your performance, we’ve got you covered.

If you’re an experienced rider looking to step things up, and you tend to ride in warmer waters, this could be the board for you. It’s price is matched by it’s Surlyn slick (board bottom), an expensive material that is extremely shock absorbent and has great recoil properties. This means your board won’t have any difficulty returning to its original shape even when it gets beaten and battered by waves.

The Pro Team PP is no exception. “Designed to ride amazingly in any condition”, this board is the ‘crème de la crème’ when it comes to performance riding. The curve of the board allows for extreme control and the shape boasts a fast ride.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BODYBOARD

SIZE

This is a simple one really- don’t just buy the first bodyboard you see because you like the color. When placed on the floor upright in front of your toes, the top of the board should be at your belly button. Too big and you’ll struggle to gain any speed through the water. Too small and you’ll have difficulty staying on and gaining any real control.

USE AND BUDGET

When and where you’re planning to use your bodyboard goes hand in hand with how much you should look to spend. For example, if bodyboarding to you is a bit of fun on vacation when you’re at the beach, look for a board in the $30-$60 range. These tend to be made up of an Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) core and a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) slick (bottom).

There’s no point in paying over $200 for an elite board with the highest spec materials if you’re just going to be bellyboarding in the whitewater as you wouldn’t necessarily notice the difference. If, however, you’re a semi-experienced rider looking to step up your game, it might be useful to bear in mind the following things in order to narrow down what you’re looking for.

CLIMATE

The water you’ll be riding in does make a difference to the type of board you go for, believe it or not. There are 3 main types of bodyboard core material; Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Polyethylene (PE) and Polypro (PP). The first (EPS), as mentioned above, is often found in beginner boards and has flotation and stability as its main property. Climate won’t affect its performance.

Between PE and PP however, there is some discrepancy. PE is generally regarded as being the better choice for riding in cooler waters, as it provides a higher degree of flex and control that is resistant to lower temperatures. PP cores are geared more toward warmer waters and are lighter than their PE counterparts. This allows for efficient maneuverability out of turns and increased speed.

STYLE & THE SHAPE OF THE BOARD

Everyone enjoys bodyboarding their own way. Some like to ride drop-knee style (where one foot is planted flat on the board with the knee bent and the other knee is planted on the board), some like to ride prone (on the belly), some prefer control, and others favor speed.

Shape is the main thing that drives the difference between these styles, so it’s useful to work out what kind of riding style you’re into, and which shape of board you should look for.

TAIL

The tail is the back end of the board. There are two main types of tail; crescent and bat (the former being a smooth curve in the shape of a crescent, the latter looking like the silhouette of a bat). If you’re a beginner and you’ll be staying mostly in the whitewater, it doesn’t really matter which you go for, though you’ll find most beginner boards have a crescent tail.

Go for a board with a bat tail if you’re an experienced rider who likes to ride prone, and you favor stability and control over agility and speed. Though you’ll still be whizzing through the waves on a bat tail, the wider surface area allows for increased stability.

A crescent tail is suited to riders who like to try a bit of drop-knee and like to move fast and stealth-like through the water. The streamlined shape offers increased speed and maneuverability.

Check out this article for a more in-depth review of different board shapes and features.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

PRONE RIDING

Catching and riding waves lying on your belly.

DROP-KNEE RIDING

Riding waves in a proposal position – one knee on the board and one bent with the foot on the board.

CONTOURS

Molded indents on the deck of the board for enhanced grip, positioning, and comfort.

NOSE BULBS

Raised areas of foam on the bottom of the deck to add grip (used on intermediate and advanced boards only).

SLICK

The bottom on the board.

CORE

The inside of the board.

DECK

The topside of the board (the bit you lie on).

PP

Stands for Polypro; a material used for the core of the board. Favorable in warmer waters as it is lightweight and strong.

PE

Stands for Polyethylene; a material used for the core of the board. Favorable in colder waters due to its rigid and flexible properties.

EPS

Stands for Expanded Polystyrene; a material used in the core of the board. Often found in cheaper and beginner boards. Very buoyant.

LEASH

A cord that attaches (usually by velcro) around the rider’s foot and the tail end of the board. This prevents losing the board to the waves.

HDPE

Stands for High Density Polyethylene. The most common material for bodyboard slicks. It is an effective, but cheaper option often found on beginner boards.

SURLYN

A more effective and expensive slick material. It is a rubber composition of resins and copolymers which have elastic and shock-absorbent properties.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HIKING SHOES FOR KIDS

While kids themselves might be happy exploring and romping through woods in their sandals or even barefoot, their feet might not be happy at the end of it. And no family holiday has ever been improved by blisters or aching feet, has it? Young, growing feet and joints should be looked after, and as we’re all different, it’s important to know what to look for when outfitting your kids’ feet.

Some of the following factors may be more important than others depending on what you’re likely to be doing. For example, if you’re planning a long multi-day hiking trip, or simply do a lot of hiking in your free time, comfort and support might be your biggest priorities. If you’re after more of a regular use shoe for Saturday mornings exploring the local forest followed by brunch in town, durability and style might be things to consider.

MATERIAL

The material you look for in a hiking shoe is important for a variety of reasons. Different materials offer different properties, so we’ve broken it down into what to look for in terms of durability, traction, comfort and it’s ability to keep water out!

DURABILITY

If you’re hoping to take the kids on a long multi-day hike, or are simply hoping their shoes will last for the next few years, durability is key. Hiking shoes are exposed to a lot more gripping, stamping, climbing, and scrambling than regular sneakers and are therefore designed to last. It’s definitely worth giving REI’s How To Choose Hiking Shoes a read to give you a really in-depth overview of different materials and how their durability varies.

TRACTION

Rubber will likely be the material used for the outsole of a hiking shoe, given its ability to provide friction on slippery or tough ground. Look for deep “lug patterns” on the sole, which are ridged bumps that offer traction. Lots of shoes boast “multi-directional” lug patterns to enhance traction even further.

Some kids’ hiking shoes and boots also offer rubber toe caps. Children often like to kick things, scramble up trees and generally jump around a little more than us adults, so a rubber toe cap is essential to ensuring shoes last and won’t wear out.

COMFORT AND EASE OF USE

Comfort is key. Happy feet mean happy kids that can explore and roam to their heart’s content. There’s nothing worse than having to bandage your child’s feet up from blisters, except for when you have to give them a piggy-back ride the whole way home when their feet become too achey!

One of the key materials to look for in terms of comfort will lie in the midsole of the shoe (this is the section between the outsole and inner sole of the shoe that provides cushioning and shock absorption). Look for PU (Polyurethane) or EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) material in the midsole. The former is slightly firmer and therefore more durable (good for longer hikes) while the latter is softer and lighter (great for comfort on regular short hikes).

It also matters that your kids’ shoes are easy to slip on and off. Lots of hiking shoes these days offer elastic “bungee” laces with a pull toggle system, and some accompany traditional laces with a hook and loop closure strap. You can read more about toggle laces and their benefits here. For younger kids, you might want to consider some of these easy-closure mechanisms, as it’ll stop you having to tie laces every 15 minutes. Older ones are usually fine with normal laces and it’ll be good knot-tying practice for them!

Lastly, make sure your little one is really happy with the comfort and fit of the shoe before going out in them. Encourage them to wear them around the house to break them in first.

WATERPROOF

Unless you’re after an amphibious water shoe that’s designed to work both on the mountain trails and on a river bed, making sure your kid’s hiking shoes are waterproof is vital. Not only does morale drop when we’re cold and wet, but it won’t do your kid’s shoes or feet any favors either. Most shoes will specify if they’re waterproof or not, just make sure they’re waterproof and not water resistant, as the latter won’t keep the water out for long at all.

How the shoe is made waterproof will vary. If the upper is made from full-grain leather it will be 100% waterproof on the outside. If you see boots as having “full bootie construction,” a “waterproof membrane,” or “Gore-Tex lining,” this means the boot has been lined with a sock-shaped waterproof lining. So while the outer material might look like mesh that will let water in, it won’t actually get through to the foot. It’s useful to bear in mind however, that waterproof membranes don’t offer great breathability and may cause feet to sweat on hotter days.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FULL BOOTIE CONSTRUCTION/WATERPROOF MEMBRANE

A waterproof layer that is formed in a “bootie” shape and inserted in the lining of the shoe, to prevent water from reaching the foot.

INSOLE

The inside part of the shoe that makes contact with and offers support to the bottom of your foot.

OUTSOLE

The outer layer on the bottom of the sandal, which touches the ground.

MIDSOLE

The layer between the sandal’s insole and outsole that absorbs shock and adds cushioning.

EVA

Stands for Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate, a material that offers light cushioning and absorbs shock.

PU

Stands for Polyurethane, a material that offers firm cushioning and durability.

HYDROPHOBIC

Hydrophobic material repels water and often has quick-drying properties.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A RASH GUARD

Rash guards were originally created to prevent surfers from getting rashes from the constant chafing against the wax on their boards, though they can come in handy for a lot of reasons these days.

Different styles, materials, fits and thicknesses mean they are just as often used for sun protection, as an extra layer of insulation under a wetsuit or over a swimsuit, and even for protection against stings. Given the amount of variables, it can seem a daunting task to try and work out which one might be best for you. Make sure to read through the following considerations before deciding which rash guard is right for you from the list above.

USE

With so many styles of rash guards out there, it’s important to give some thought to how and when you’re likely to be using one.If you think you’ll predominantly be using your rash guard in colder seas, it might be useful to have a tighter-fitting, long-sleeved top to keep you warm. With a tight-fitting, long sleeve rash guard, you can use it comfortably under a wetsuit as an extra layer of insulation.

If you’re after a bikini cover up to protect your shoulders from the sun’s harmful rays, then perhaps a shorter-sleeved, zipper-fronted rash guard might suit you best. Perhaps you’re someone who travels to both tropical and colder climates, in which case you might consider a long-sleeved one-piece to use as a warm layer under a wetsuit or as a protective option from the sun.

Most rash guards are pretty versatile and some will even double up as active workout tops, given their moisture-wicking qualities. So have a good think about what you want to get out of your rash guard and start looking for one that ticks those boxes!

MATERIALS

Most rash guards are made from a combination of synthetic fibers such as Nylon, Spandex, Polyester, Elastane, and occasionally Neoprene if they’re a little thicker. Spandex, Lycra and Elastane have stretchy, form-fitting qualities while Polyester and Nylon tend to be fast-drying and moisture-wicking. A combination is usually a safe bet. Look for a composition such as 82% Polyester, 18% Spandex, or 78% Nylon, 22% Elastane. Check out The Clymb’s buying guide for a breakdown on the properties of each material.

UPF PROTECTION

This is one of the main benefits of owning a rash guard. Not only are the sun’s rays stronger when you’re in water, but the cooling effect of the water can often deceive you into thinking you’re not getting burnt. This is why looking for a top with a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is vital. Most rash guards will have UPF 50+ protection, but some cheaper options won’t have any at all, so look out for this! LeisurePro offers a great guide on what different ratings mean and how much you’ll be protected.

FIT AND STYLE

The thought of wearing tight-fitting lycra on a beach all day can to many be a daunting prospect. But not to fear, function doesn’t always need to compromise style; there are looser-fitting styles of rash guards out there. A ‘close-to-body’ or ‘form-fitting’ style is sometimes preferable as they fit snug under a wetsuit whilst allowing breathability so you don’t feel as if you’re being sucked in at every angle! If your main priority is to stay warm however, a tight fit is the best option.

Most rash guards often have a high or crew neckline. High necklines are great in colder weather as they will prevent water from entering through the top. A crew neckline offers a more breathable option for summertime or warmer water conditions. Which you decide to go for just depends on what you’ll be wearing your rash guard for. You should consider the type of surfboard you prefer to ride — whether it’s a hard top or a soft top — and your experience level — whether you’re a beginner surfer or you’ve been riding the waves for years.

You might also see features such as 4-way stretch, raglan-sleeves and garments made from 6 panels of material. These are all great features as they allow for a great range of movement and stretch.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UPF PROTECTION

Ultraviolet Protection Factor. A top with UPF 50+ will allow 1/50th of the sun’s rays to pass through to the skin.

RAGLAN SLEEVES

Sleeves that extend from the collar in one-piece. The diagonal seam from collarbone to underarm allows for a broader range of movement than normal sleeves.

FLATLOCK STITCHING

This means the stitching on the garment lies flat, which prevents rubbing and chafing.

MOISTURE-WICKING

As well as drying quickly, fabric with moisture-wicking qualities draws moisture away from the skin. The combination of these factors means you will feel less sweaty and your body can more effectively regulate its temperature.
