THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF SHOES

UPPER

The part of a shoe that covers your foot is referred to as the “upper.” Some of the most common upper materials found on water shoes are synthetic (either nylon, polyester, or canvas) and dry very quickly. Another option is mesh (also synthetic) but allows the most breathability and water drainage. However, they are considered less durable than other synthetics.

LINING

Some water shoes have linings that offer warmth via an insulating effect while others opt for a more lightweight and breathable design. Shoes with linings are a great option for cold weather/water but take much longer to dry out than shoes without linings.

MIDSOLE

The midsole of a shoe is the middle layer of a shoe’s base. From top to bottom, the entire sole of the shoe consists of insole → midsole → outsole. The topsole is where your foot rests and the outsole is the rubber that touches the ground.

The most commonly used midsole in water shoes is Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA). The benefits of EVA are that it’s lightweight, cushiony, and very comfortable with virtually no break-in period. However, EVA doesn’t last as long as some other materials and should only be expected to last between 3 – 6 months.

RAZOR-SIPING

Razor-Siping is the process of making micro cuts in rubber soles so that they grip slick surfaces (like ice and water) better. While this isn’t the only way to increase the traction of rubber soles, it’s certainly a desirable feature to have.

FIT

It’s always best to double check the manufacturer’s sizing chart before buying shoes, as not all companies use the same sizing system. Some shoes fit narrower than other brands (like Nike) while others adhere to a unisex sizing that may be different from what you’re used to.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

OUTSOLE

“Where the rubber meets the road.” The outsole is the bottommost portion of the shoe that makes contact with the ground.

EVA

Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate, also known as EVA, is a synthetic material that provides high amounts of cushioning and shock absorption.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF BOOTIES

UPPER

The “upper” part of a shoe, as it’s known, is the top portion of your surf booties that covers the tops of your feet. They are generally made of either a synthetic material, mesh, or neoprene.

Synthetic materials dry quickly and are great for multi-season use. Mesh uppers are great for draining water quickly and are best suited for summer surfing. Neoprene, the same material that a wetsuit is made of, is best for surfing in cool/cold water as it retains water that is heated by your skin – this provides an insulating effect.

LINING

Some surf booties feature a liner that helps insulate your feet during cold water surfing. The most common type is a titanium reflecting material that bounces heat coming from your body back to you. Make sure you choose a pair of surf booties that are sure to keep your feet warm without overheating depending on the conditions you normally surf in.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HOOK AND LOOP STRAP

A type of adjustment strap that uses a hook as an anchor where a strap is “looped”, or threaded, into the hook and pulled back for tightening.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF WATCHES

BATTERY LIFE

The battery life on your watch depends largely on how much you use the features and to what extent. That being said, smartwatches generally tend to have shorter battery lives (hours to days) as they are running multiple programs. Non-smartwatches typically have much longer battery lives that can last anywhere from a few days (if using GPS) to up to a year or more.

WATER-RESISTANT DEPTH

The deeper a watch is able to resist water, the more pressure it is able to handle. So, watches with a rating of 30 meters will seep water and risk damaging the watch if it goes any deeper than that.

BLUETOOTH AND SMART DEVICE COMPATIBILITY

While the two are not necessarily synonymous, the do typically go hand-in-hand. Bluetooth can be used to send and receive data with devices nearby, such as a heart rate monitor, while some watches don’t necessarily need Bluetooth to receive smart device notification.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

NFC Chip

Near-Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range, two-way communication technology whose most practical use has been for cardless/cashless transactions. Many smartphones and smart devices have an NFC chip and, when linked with your debit/credit card, this chip can serve as a replacement for having the physical card. Retailers that accept NFC chip payments will offer the option on a credit/debit swiper, where you tap your device to pay.

Waypoint

A waypoint is a digital flag that can be planted on maps (on a GPS device). By laying down waypoints you can find your way back from where you came (like digital breadcrumbs).

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING ROOF RACKS

TYPE

The two types of roof racks are universal type and surfboard-specific type. If you want to be able to carry more than just a surfboard, then we suggest snagging a universal roof rack. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that though they may appear similar, a surfboard specific rack will not necessarily accomodate a SUP.

DIMENSIONS

Knowing the dimensions of your surfboard is helpful when choosing a roof rack. With each rack having their dimensions specified, be sure to compare your board to the roof rack to ensure that they will be compatible.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Reviews - The Best Traction Pads for Surfboards

Abahub 12 Piece

Specs
  • Thickness: 3mm
  • Tail Kicker: Yes
Features
  • 100% Satisfaction Guarantee
  • Available In 6 Different Colors
  • Slip-Resistant Diamond Groove Pattern

BEST FOR: LONGBOARDS AND LARGE SURFBOARDS

Most beginners are rocking either a longboard or an oversized regular board to help reduce the learning curve. With a surfboard on the larger end of the spectrum, you’re going to want a traction pad that can cover all that real estate.

The ABAHUB 12-Piece Traction Pad is your primo choice for big boards. The 12 pieces are sure to be enough to cover your whole board and can be mixed and matched exactly to your liking.

This traction pad is also super cushiony as it’s made from a closed cell EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) foam that absorbs impact and makes for a comfortable day on the water.

Wave Tribe Cork

Specs
  • Thickness: 2mm
  • Tail Kicker: Yes
Features
  • Cork Construction Is Eco-Conscious
  • Lighter And More Durable Than EVA
  • 3M Adhesive Ensures A Strong Bond To Your Surfboard

BEST FOR: ECO-CONSCIOUS SURFERS

Eco-conscious surfers who prefer products that are responsibly made and constructed from sustainable materials will be thrilled to have the Wave Tribe Cork Surfboard Traction Pad as an addition to their board. The use of cork (from cork trees) helps reduce our reliance on plastics and synthetically produced products that expand our carbon footprint.

The additional benefits of using cork are that it’s longer lasting and much lighter than EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) foam, helping improve durability and performance. The Wave Tribe Cork also features a small kicker in the rear for improved steering.

RSPro Hexatraction

Specs
  • Thickness: None
  • Tail Kicker: No
Features
  • Includes Template For Easy Installation
  • Don’t Add Any Extra Weight To Your Board
  • 6” Inch Clear Hexagons Don’t Cover Up Board Graphics

BEST FOR: AN ALTERNATIVE TO WAX

For those who prefer a more natural feel for their board and want as slim and low-profile traction as possible, Hexatraction Clear Surf Grip is your best bet. Its “barely there” low-profile design can actually be used as an alternative to wax.

The best part is that Hexatraction can be used in addition to a traction pad. You can put a small traction pad near the rear of your surfboard and then cover the rest of your board with the Hexatraction hexagons.

The kit includes 18 full-sized and 4 half-sized clear hexagons, which will mostly cover a 6’ foot short board. Longboarders will need two kits for full coverage.

Abahub 3 Piece

Specs
  • Thickness: 1.5mm
  • Tail Kicker: Yes
Features
  • Weighs Just 3 Ounces
  • Available In 4 Different Colors
  • 25mm Tail Kicker Helps You Kick Into Maneuvers

BEST FOR: FISH BOARDS AND SHORTBOARDS

Short board shredders needing some traction in the rear with a tail kicker to kick into maneuvers are in luck – the 9-Piece Surfboard Traction Pad by ABAHUB is the perfect match!

At just 3 ounces in total weight this traction pad won’t add any significant weight to your board, letting you rip your board through waves just as you normally would. The diamond grooved pattern lends itself to more traction even when waves are splashing all over your deck.

Designed for turns and cutbacks, you’ll feel right at home carving up any wave and may even find a helping hand with the steep tail kicker.

Foammaker Universal DIY

Specs
  • Thickness: 2mm
  • Tail Kicker: No
Features
  • Available In 3 Different Colors
  • Peel & Stick Design Is Easy To Apply
  • Diamond Groove Pattern Drains Water Easily

  • Temperature Range: 56°F to 65°F
  • Thickness: 3/2 mm
Features

  • Abrasion Resistant Knee Pads For Protection

  • Thermal Lining Dries Fast And Keeps You Warm
Vissla 7 Seas 3/2 MM

BEST QUICK-DRYING WETSUIT

The Vissla 7 Seas is an all-around performer. To start, the wetsuit is constructed with a thermal lining. As temperatures drop, your body will generate more heat. This heat is then trapped by the thermal layer to keep you warm.

The seams of this wetsuit keep excess water out due to the fact that they are double stitched, glued, and then taped over. The fabric of this wetsuit is also unique. Most wetsuits on the list are made with neoprene, but this wetsuit was made with nylon as well. This helps the wetsuit dry quicker than most, but also makes it very flexible and comfortable. To top things off, a front entry zipper makes the wetsuit easy to take on and off.

Phantom Aquatics Men’s Marine Shorty

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 65°F to 80°F
  • Thickness: 2.5 mm
Features
  • 3-Dimensional Anatomic Modeling Allows The Wetsuit To Fit Very Comfortably
  • Velcro Neck Fastener Keeps Water Out At the Neck
  • 2.5 mm Of Neoprene Combined With Flatlock Seams Is Extra Flexible

BEST FOR COMFORTABLE WARM WATER SURFING

If you are planning to surf in warm water, you may prefer a short-sleeved wetsuit like this one. This wetsuit was designed to fit the body better than others. The anatomical design will hug your body, which will prevent chafing underneath the arms and other sensitive areas.

The flatlock seams of the wetsuit are more flexible than blindstitched seams, even though they won’t keep water out as well. That being said, you won’t need to worry as much about keeping cold water out of your suit because you’ll be surfing in warmer conditions. If you want a short-sleeved wetsuit that is comfortable and affordable, this wetsuit is for you.

O’Neill Reactor II 2mm

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: 83% Nylon / 17% Spandex
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 60°F to 80°F

  • Seamless Paddle Zones Reduces Chafing At Important Areas
  • Foam Around The Neck Keeps Water Out And Wetsuit Comfortable
  • Features UV Protection To Keep Your Skin Safe In Extreme Sun
O’Neill Reactor II 2mm

BEST SHORT SLEEVED WETSUIT

If you consistently surf in warm water, this is the wetsuit for you. It’s a short sleeved wetsuit, which means the sleeves stop before the elbows and the legs stop right above the knee. However, it also features UV protection that keeps your skin safe in direct sunlight.

Spandex is used in the construction of this wetsuit, which makes it very comfortable and flexible. This may be one of the most mobile wetsuits on the list. With this wetsuit, seams were removed from areas that are traditionally prone to chafing. O’Neill is constantly improving its products, but this one is near perfect for warm water surfers.

Hevto 3 mm

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: Neoprene/ Nylon Elastic
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 50°F to 67°F
  • Thickness: 3 mm
Features
  • Suitable For Surfing, SCUBA Diving, Kayaking, Swimming, And Other Water Sports
  • Extra Long Leash On Back Zipper Makes Wetsuit Easy To Put On And Take Off
  • Lifetime Replacement Guarantee

BEST FOR BUDGET MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES

The Hevto 3 mm wetsuit is the most affordable full-body wetsuit on the list. Even though it doesn’t keep water out as well as other suits, it is a wetsuit that can be used for much more than surfing. This is due to the fact that the suit is built with buoyancy in mind. It helps you float in the water. Beginners will also love this wetsuit because of how easy it is to put on and take off. We recommend this suit to new surfers because you will be able to get a feel for if a wetsuit is necessary without spending a fortune.

Seavenger 3 mm Odyssey

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Flatlock
  • Temperature Range: 65°F - 80°F
  • Thickness: 3 mm
Features
  • Super Stretch Panels In The Knee And Armpit Makes Wetsuit Great For Multi-Sport Athletes
  • Tough Chest Fabric Withstands Continual Rubbing On The Surfboard
  • Knee Pads And Shoulder Pads Offer Ultimate Comfort And Protection
  • Extra Long Leash On Zipper Makes Wetsuit Easy To Put On And Take Off

BEST FOR BUDGET, WARM WATER SURFERS

This wetsuit is the only full-length wetsuit on this list that is designed for warmer temperatures. It won’t keep you warm in cold waters, but it will be comfortable. The fabric that is used underneath the armpits and knees stretches more than the fabric used in other areas of the wetsuit.

The fabric used on the chest is also unique. It provides more padding and grip than other wetsuits. There are also pads at the shoulders and knees. All of these features combined make this wetsuit durable and long lasting. At a low price point, this wetsuit is ideal for beginners who want a full bodysuit.

O’Neill Epic 3/2 Full

Specs
  • Material: Neoprene
  • Seams: Blindstitched
  • Temperature Range: 50°F to 68°F
  • Thickness: 3/2 mm
Features
  • Very Comfortable Neck Closure With 2 Different Points Of Closure

O’Neill Epic 3/2 Full

BEST FOR A VARIETY OF COLOR OPTIONS

This O’Neill wetsuit is ideal for women who want a stylish wetsuit. There is a large variety of color options available, so you’ll be able to find a wetsuit that fits your vibe. The wetsuit has a wide temperature range because it keeps water out better than other wetsuits. The seams are blindstiched and glued. The neck also has two closures, which also helps to keep water out. This wetsuit is comfortable, stylish, and durable.

O’Neill PsychoTech 5.5/4 mm

Specs
  • Material: Hydrophobic Neoprene and Rubber
  • Seams: Blindstitched
  • Temperature Range: 40°F to 64°F
  • Thickness: 5.5/4 mm
Features
  • Foam Rubber Core For Warmth And Comfort
  • Trapped Air Technology With Quick-Dry Properties For Ultimate Warmth
  • Super-Seal Cuffs Provide Secure Fit
  • Includes A Hood For Keeping Your Head Warm
O’Neill PsychoTech 5.5/4 mm

BEST FOR COLD WATER

This wetsuit is a beast and is ideal for frigid temperatures. Instead of being made with just neoprene, it has a rubber layer to keep water out extremely well.

There are multiple things that set this wetsuit apart from others. First, it’s the thickest wetsuit on the list but is also made with an internal firewall. This thermal lining generates more heat the longer you stay out in the cold.

Second, it also comes with a hood to keep your head warm. Finally, the cuffs at the wrists and ankles will seal out water better than any other wetsuit. If you’re going on a nordic surfing adventure, get this wetsuit. You’ll freeze otherwise.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFING WETSUIT

MATERIAL

Most wetsuits on the list are made with neoprene. Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is very water resistant. It also is very flexible, making it ideal for usage in water sports.

Companies like O’Neill and Roxy specialize in wetsuits and make their own unique fabric. This often features a blend of neoprene and spandex, which allows the wetsuit to fit tighter while remaining flexible.

However, wetsuits made with higher-end fabrics tend to be much more expensive than the rest. If you want a cheaper wetsuit, consider buying one that isn’t made with 100% neoprene. In order to make the wetsuit more affordable, companies use a combination of neoprene and nylon. The one benefit of this, other than the lower cost, is that they dry more quickly so you won’t be hanging out in a soaking wet suit for long.

SEAMS

In order to fit snugly on your body, a wetsuit is made by stitching multiple fabric panels together. These panels are sewn together in a variety of different ways. The type of seams that your wetsuit has will impact the comfort and flexibility of the suit, as well as the ability for water to enter into your wetsuit. The types of seams are explained below:

BLINDSTITCHED
Blindstitched means that the two seams are glued together, and then sewn halfway through the material. Water stays out of seams very well, but the wetsuit is also more flexible and durable with blindstitched seams. The only downfall to these seams is that they tend to cause more chafing on the skin.

DOUBLE BLINDSTITCHED
This sort of stitching is used on thicker wetsuits. The seam is sewn halfway through on both sides, but typically features tape or glue to keep water out. These seams keep water out extremely well, but tend to chafe more than any other type of seam.

FLATLOCK
This sort of stitching includes one piece of fabric overlayed slightly on the other, and then the two are stitched completely together. This seam is very strong and durable. However, there are a lot of holes made in the process, making it more ideal for warm surfing as water is more likely to enter due to the holes. One benefit of flatlock seams is less chafing on the skin.

TEMPERATURE RANGE

Each wetsuit is promoted as having a specific temperature range, which is very important to keep in mind as you are deciding which wetsuit is for you.

There are a few different factors that make certain wetsuits warmer than others. Thicker wetsuits are warmer than thinner ones. Be sure to review if your wetsuit is the same thickness throughout the entire suit or only thicker at the chest.

A thick wetsuit will be warmer, but also more constricting in terms of mobility. Also, the types of seams will impact how much water enters into your suit. Wet suits with flatlock seams will be a bit more chilly than suits with blindstiched or double blindstitched seams.

THICKNESS

What does #/# mm mean? The first number is the thickness of the wetsuit at the chest, and the second number is the thickness of the material at the limbs and back. Higher quality wetsuits are thicker at the chest for two reasons. First, they keep the chest warmer and in turn, keep the entire body warmer. Second, surfing wetsuits wear down at the chest fastest because of all the time spent paddling on a board.

The thicker your wetsuit is, the warmer it will be. That being said, thicker wetsuits aren’t as flexible as thinner ones.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

EXTRA LONG LEASH ON BACK ZIPPER

The zippers on wetsuits are typically on the back. Without a leash on your zipper, you’ll need a friend to help you take your wetsuit on and off.

INTERIOR KEY POCKET

Leaving your keys at the beach is never a good idea. A small key pocket allows you to keep your keys with you while surfing. They are typically at the ankle so they stay out of your way while paddling or surfing.

INTERNAL THERMAL LINING

As water temperatures drop, your body will work harder to generate body heat. A thermal lining on the inside of your wetsuit will trap in this heat. In colder temperatures, this is an essential feature to have.

KNEE PADS AND SHOULDER PADS

Wetsuits with pads at the shoulders and knees are not just more comfortable when paddling –  they can save you from a serious injury when wiping out. The worst feeling is having a board crush into your knee or shoulder, but having pads on your wetsuit will keep you safer.

SEAMLESS PADDLE ZONES

The paddle zones are at the shoulders and armpits. They take on the most strain when paddling out to catch waves and are very prone to chafing. Removing the seams makes chafing less likely to occur.

Reviews - The Best Leash for Surfboards

Dakine John John Florence Comp

Specs
  • Colors: 5
  • Length: 6 ft
  • Thickness: 4.7 mm
Features
  • Longer Rail Saver Protects Board In Serious Waves
  • Cushioned Neoprene Ankle Cuff With Heavy Duty Velcro
  • Swivels Feature Highly Durable Material, Making The Leash Long Lasting

BEST FOR SHORTBOARD SURFERS

Dakine makes a wide variety of surfboard leashes, but this one was built to withstand all sorts of conditions. It’s extremely lightweight and thin, and you’ll hardly even notice it around your ankle. Don’t let that trick you into thinking that it can’t take a beating though. It will stay connected in the toughest of surf conditions. To top things off, the ankle cuff is cushioned and extremely comfortable. If your board is shorter than 6 ft, this might just be the leash for you.

WOOWAVE Premium 9

Specs
  • Colors: 9
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 7 mm
Features
  • Padded Ankle Cuff For Comfortable Surfing
  • Lifetime Warranty -- If Leash Snaps, Manufacturer Will Replace It At No Charge
  • Hidden Key Pocket In Cuff
  • Comes With A Free Waterproof Phone And Wallet Case

BEST FOR BUDGET SURFERS

The Woowave Premium leash is significantly cheaper than any other leash on this list. It’s 7 mm thick, which creates a bit more drag but ensures that it won’t snap. In the event that it does snap though, Woowave will replace it for free. To top things off, your purchase includes a waterproof wallet and phone case. If you aren’t sure what you want out of your surf leash, this is a great first leash.

Alpenflow Premium

Specs
  • Colors: 4
  • Length: 7 ft
  • Thickness: 7 mm
Features
  • Easy Pull Tab For Quick Release If Leash Becomes Stuck
  • High-Density Nylon Rail Saver Makes Leash Long Lasting
  • Cuff Colors Match Leash Cord Color For Great Swag
  • Padded Neoprene Ankle Cuff

BEST FOR QUICK RELEASE

The Alpenflow Premium is truly that — a premium leash. It’s short and thick, which more extreme surfers will find necessary. It also has a quick-release system. Although rare, your board can get caught on a reef and keep you trapped underwater. A quick-release system will let you remove your leash quickly and swim to safety. If you are planning to surf reef breaks more than beach breaks, this might be the leash for you.

Wave Tribe ECO

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 7 ft
  • Thickness: N/A
Features
  • Key Stash In The Cuff Allows You To Keep Your Keys On Yourself While Surfing
  • One Year Replacement Guarantee -- Your Break It, They Replace It
  • Made With Recycled Materials
  • Swivels At Both Ends Of Leash Ensures Leash Doesn’t Get Tangled

BEST FOR ECO-CONSCIOUS SURFERS

Unfortunately, plastic’s impact on the environment doesn’t hide in the ocean. This leash helps combat that by being one of the only leashes made with recycled materials. It also features a double swivel, which means the leash will rotate at your ankle and near the board. This allows you to surf without worry about the leash wrapping around your leg. To top things off, the cuff features some pretty awesome graphics so you can look cool while you surf too!

DAKINE Longboard

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 6.5 mm
Features
  • Marine Grade Stainless Steel Swivels For Durability
  • High-Grade Velcro Keeps Cuff In Place
  • Maximum Strength Leash Stretches Long When Falls Occur
  • Detachable Rail Saver For Customizable Performance

BEST FOR BEGINNER SURFERS

If you aren’t certain about what you want your leash to do, this is a great option for you. The rail saver on this leash is removable. Removing the rail saver will reduce drag in the water, but make the edges of your board more prone to damage. Most importantly, this leash will progress with you as you get better at surfing. It can handle all types of waves and all types of surfboards.

FCS Freedom

Specs
  • Colors: 6
  • Length: 6 ft
  • Thickness: N/A
Features
  • Nylon Used In Leash Makes Leash Extremely Thin
  • Silicone Grip Print At Cuff Keeps Cuff Attached To Ankle
  • Neoprene Padding In The Cuff Protects Your Ankle
  • Specifically Designed For Waves Under 5 Feet

BEST FOR SMALL WAVE SURFERS

FCS brings new innovation to the table with this surf leash. Instead of being made solely with urethane like other surf leashes, it is constructed with nylon yarn wrapped around a durable cord. It’s the only leash on the list that is made this way, allowing it to be extremely thin.

It may stay out of your way and have very little drag, but surfers have been a bit disappointed with this leash for other reasons. In larger waves, the leash stretches out without recoiling or may straight-up rip. For this reason, this leash is recommended for use in small waves. One positive feature of the leash, though, is the silicone on the inside of the cuff. The leash will stay in place on your ankle better than other leashes.

Ocean Earth Premium One-XT

Specs
  • Colors: 1
  • Length: 9 ft
  • Thickness: 8 mm
Features
  • Extremely Durable Cuff For Long Lasting Performance
  • Leash Is Made With Extremely Tough Materials
  • End Of The Leash Is Made To Be Easily Attached To Surfboard
  • Anti-Corrosive Steel Is Used In Swivel Joint For Extreme Durability

BEST FOR DURABILITY

This leash from Ocean and Earth can withstand a beating. The cord itself is made with extremely tough material, but it’s also thicker than other leashes. The swivel joints are also made with anti-corrosive steel that will withstand years of use. And the cuff is made thicker than most. All of these things combined create a leash that won’t need to be replaced.

Creatures of Leisure Reliance

Specs
  • Colors: 8
  • Length: 8 ft
  • Thickness: 7mm
Features
  • Stretches Up To 5x Original Length
  • Covered By A Two Year Warranty
  • Hook And Weave Velcro Design Is Lighter And Stronger Than Traditional Velcro
  • Unbreakable Swivel Keeps Leash From Tangling Around

BEST FOR ABSORBING WAVE CONTACT

Creatures of Leisure is respected by surfers and surf product companies alike. In fact, they were the very first company to introduce the swivel to surfboard leashes. They innovate the traditional leash with this one as well. What makes it stand apart is a patented DNA Flex Mold, created to absorb wave impact. This makes the leash strong, flexible, and durable. Creatures of Leisure makes very quality products, and this one does not disappoint.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFBOARD LEASH

CORD LENGTH

The cord is the long part of the leash that connects your ankle to your surfboard. The correct length of leash for you will depend on the height of your surfboard. A good rule of thumb is to purchase a leash that is equal in length to or slightly longer than your surfboard.

Unless you are an expert surfer, don’t get a leash that is shorter than your board. If your leash is shorter than your board, you risk falling on top of your surfboard or allowing for your surfboard to crash into you after a fall. However, you also shouldn’t try and purchase the longest leash possible. A leash that’s too long will drag in the water, get tangled around your ankle, or allow your board to hit other surfers in the water.

CUFF

The cuff of a surfboard leash is the part that connects to your ankle. They are always made with velcro, which allows them to stay tight on your ankle. A cuff that shifts while surfing can cause irritation on your ankle. If you’ve experienced this in the past, a cuff with silicone may be for you. Some cuffs on this list are padded, making them extremely comfortable. Others have a quick release feature, which can save you in the event of your leash getting wrapped around a reef.

RAIL SAVER

This is the part of the leash that directly attaches to the surfboard. The larger the rail saver is, the more protected your board will be during a fall. If the rail saver is small, there is the risk that the leash puts a lot of pressure on the edges of the board and potentially damages it. A rail saver extends the leash and in turn, eliminates pressure on the edges of the surfboard. The downside of a longer rail saver is more drag in the water.

SWIVEL

Leashes are much more than cords that connect your ankle to your board. Most leashes have small swivels joints at both sides of the leash, near your ankle and near the surfboard. This allows for the cord to whip around in the water without getting tangled around your foot. Swivels that are made with anti-corrosive steel will last longer than those without.

THICKNESS

A thin surfboard leash is better for more experienced surfers. The leash will not drag as much and is also much less likely to get wrapped around your leg. The one downside though, is that this leash is much more susceptible to breaking. If you want a thin leash, consider buying one with a good warranty. Thicker leashes are better for beginners because they can withstand the wave impact that comes with falling. If you want a leash that is going to last a long time, go thicker. If you want a leash that will perform at a higher experience level, go with a thinner leash.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DETACHABLE RAIL SAVER

A detachable rail saver allows you to choose between two different priorities — protecting the edges of your board or having the leash drag less in the water.

KEY STASH

If you’re going out to surf alone, you know it can be a hassle trying to decide where to leave your car keys. Some leashes have key stashes in the cuff, which allow you to keep your keys on your body while you surf.

WARRANTY

Due to the nature of their job, surfboard leashes snap. That’s why leashes with a warranty are great! They allow your leash to be replaced for free.

BEST STRETCH COVER BAG

FCS brings a unique approach to the surfboard bag with this design. First off, the zipper is only located at the bottom of the bag, which allows for the edges of the board to be adequately covered. This also makes the bag extremely lightweight. In the middle of the bag is what FCS calls an ‘armadillo strip’. This provides ventilation to the board while keeping the bag snug around your board. This bag isn’t recommended for long-distance travel, but if you want a snug bag for your board, this is it.

It’s really the ultimate surfboard bag if you’re going to be transporting multiple surfboards to another country.

The padding on the bag may not be the thickest, but this bag will last for a really long time.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SURFBOARD BAG

LENGTH

The last thing you want is to order a bag that doesn’t fit your surfboard. That being said, you also don’t want a bag that isn’t snug. A loose fit will allow your surfboard to shift around during transportation and make it much more prone to dings, nicks, and scratches. Make sure to measure the length of your longest board you plan to use the bag for before deciding which bag length is right for you.

SIZE OF BAG

What do you want out of your surfboard bag? If you need a bag that will allow you to store your surfboard at home, throw it in the back of your trunk, and take it to the beach, then a bag that holds a single surfboard should do just fine. These bags, however, don’t feature as much padding as bags that hold multiple surfboards.

Bags that hold multiple surfboards, often referred to as coffins, are far more suited for long-distance travel. For this reason, they have much more padding for protecting the board. Serious surfers prefer a larger bag because they can take all their boards to the beach and then decide which board they want to surf on.

PADDING

How protective do you want your bag to be? Surfboards can take a beating while being transported. If you’re careful, you can get away with less padding. But if you don’t want to worry about your board getting dinged up during travel, then consider a bag with more padding to for maximum protection. And keep in mind that the amount of padding in a bag will also affect how heavy it is.

TRANSPORTATION

A surfboard bag makes transporting your surfboard simple and hassle-free. Most bags feature an adjustable shoulder strap and a hand strap for carrying, which makes them easy to transport. However, if you are buying a larger or bulkier surfboard bag, consider buying a bag with wheels. It will be far easier for you to navigate through busy airports or public transportation stations with a wheelie bag than one you have to carry by hand.

HEAT PROTECTION

Surfboards have a protective laminate layer that prevents the board from long-term damage. If your board is exposed to too much heat, this protective layer can start to delaminate (or “de-lam” as surfers call it.) Surfboard bags prevent de-lamming from happening in two different ways:

UV Reflective Fabric: A layer of reflective fabric will shield your surfboard from the damage of direct sunlight. If you leave your other boards in the bag while you’re out catching waves, a bag with this technology is important to protect your boards while they sit in the sun waiting to be used.

Ventilation: A bag with ventilation will keep your board cool if you plan to store it in a warm place, like an attic or the back of your car, for instance.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

COMPRESSION STRAPS

If you happen to purchase a larger surfboard bag, compression straps will protect your board from shifting around in the bag. This will ultimately keep your boards better protected.

FLEXIBLE TAIL SECTION

Bags with a flexible tail section allow you to store your surfboard without removing the fins. You will still want to be extra cautious while transporting your boards even when your bag comes with a flexible tail section. But bags with this feature will get your board to the beach without having to remove the fins.

INTERIOR BOARD DIVIDER

Bags that fit multiple boards typically feature an interior board divider. This protects your boards from damaging one another during transportation.

ZIPPER LOCATED AT THE FIN

Bags with a zipper located at the fin will allow you to slide your board in and out of the bag.

Catching your very first wave is exhilarating. Once you do so, you’ll realize why surfers can’t stop dreaming about their next one. Without the best surf wax though, you won’t have much luck standing up on your board. Surf wax provides traction between you and your board, allowing your feet to stay locked in place. Surf wax also helps while paddling out to catch a wave. That being said, surf waxes vary, and it’s important that you get the right wax for the climate you’re surfing in. The list below has a wide selection of different surf waxes and contains all the different types you need to surf with success.

The wax is made with local materials on the company’s farm in California. What makes this wax unique though is the fact that your purchase comes with a free coin bag. This coin bag is best used for storing your used blocks of wax.

BEST FOR SOFT BOARDS

Sticky Bumps makes a surf wax for everyone. This specific wax is designed for soft boards, which require a unique sort of wax — a soft wax that sticks on your board in moderate and warmer temperatures. It won’t get oily as the day goes on, allowing you to stick to your board and catch some big waves.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF WAX

COAT TYPE

BASECOAT: This is the first layer of wax that you should apply to your surfboard. A basecoat wax is harder and stickier than topcoat wax. This allows you to apply a layer of wax over it that is more suited to the temperature of the water. The basecoat will allow the topcoat to last longer to help you maintain balance as you surf.

TOPCOAT: This is the layer of wax that you put on after applying a basecoat. It will make the bumps of your basecoat more pronounced, but also seal the bumps to make the coat last longer. Topcoats are rated for specific water temperatures. Using the right temperature of wax is important if you want your wax to last for a long time. However, don’t apply too much wax! This will actually make it harder to surf.

SCENT

The best thing about surf wax is that it smells good. While coconut is the most common scent, some companies are changing it up by offering bubble gum, berry, and jasmine scents. After waxing your board, leave it in your car so it smells fresh after your surf session.

TEMPERATURE

COLD: 58°F and below. This wax is very soft, so don’t let it sit out in the sun too long! If you use it in warm temperatures, it will be oily after catching a few waves.

COOL: 58°F – 68°F. This wax is semi-hard and will hold up in moderate temperatures.

WARM: 68°F – 75°F. This wax will melt off your board if used in tropical temperatures.

TROPICAL: 75°F and above. This wax is harder than others, allowing it to stick on your board for a long time without melting.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE COLORS

It’s actually recommended to purchase a surf wax that’s a different color from your basecoat. This will allow you to recognize when the topcoat is wearing off, and it’s time to apply more wax.

NON-TOXIC AND BIODEGRADABLE

Surf wax can be harmful to the environment, which is why it’s important to buy one that is non-toxic and biodegradable.

PACKAGING CAN BE USED AS STORAGE

If a bar of surf wax comes packaged in a box, you can store partially used bars of wax inside of it. Some bars come wrapped in plastic, which can be frustrating. Some bars, like Matunas Base Coat, come with a free coin bag for storage.

Having the best foam surfboard is like having a key to the world’s greatest adventure playground: the ocean. Essentially, they’re a LOT of fun. Foam surfboards were designed with Phil Edward’s famous quote that “the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun” in mind. They’re super buoyant and have a large surface area, which not only means you can paddle them fast in and out of whitewater, but they also provide an accessible platform (literally) for anyone to hop on and experience the thrill of riding waves.

Which foam surfboard do you choose though? Fear not, our expert team of saltwater thrill seekers has found ten of the best beginner friendly foam boards on the market, so you can get to thinking about surfing waves instead of surfing the web.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FOAM SURFBOARD

COST

This is common sense really, but if you’re just trying out surfing for the first time, thinking of getting your kids into the waves, or if you just surf a few times a year on vacation, it might be wise not to blow your latest paycheck on the most expensive board you can find.

Much like clothing brands, you’d be surprised how many boards are made of similar materials using a similar manufacturing process, but are miles apart on the sale price scale. It’d be much wiser to read up on the information below (size, materials to look for, etc.) so you know what you’re looking for, and can then narrow it down to which ones fit your budget.

SIZE AND VOLUME

Size does matter when it comes to surfboards. Though generally a bigger board means it’ll be easier to balance and stand up on, it is possible to get a board that is too big for you, which would result in feeling like you’re on a large raft with no means of steering power or control. And we don’t want that, right? So, it’s good to find the right size board. Generally your board should be at least 2 feet taller than you but no more than 3.5 feet over your standing height. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, so you might find it useful to check out this sizing guide.

Volume is arguably the most important factor to consider to get the right board for you. The volume of your board is the total amount of space that it takes up. Usually we calculate volume by a simple calculation of length x width x height, but the shape of a surfboard makes this a little trickier, so they’re generally measured in cubic litres (L).

As a general rule, a beginner surfer should be riding a board whose volume matches their body weight in kg. So if you weigh 80kg, look for a board around 80L. This means you’ll have a board that is both buoyant and maneuverable in the water. Check out this volume chart to find out what volume of board you should be looking for (if you’re buying a foam board, you should look in the beginner column).

MATERIAL

Generally the inside (core) of foam boards are made up of any of the following materials. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but all are good to look for when buying your first foam board.

Polyurethane (PU) – Very buoyant. Strong, durable and easy to shape. Keep in mind that disposal of this type of plastic poses a hazardous threat to the environment.

Polystyrene (PS) – Extremely buoyant. Light, recyclable, and environmentally-friendly. Not quite as strong or durable as it’s Polyurethane counterpart however.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) – A version of the above, so it bears the same properties but essentially is uber lightweight.

Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene (IXPE) – Extremely fine celled microcellular foam that has excellent waterproof and shock absorbent properties (waterproof is good because it means the board won’t absorb water over time, which would make it more likely to sink).

Polypropylene (PP) – Very durable, resistant (strong in cold water), and lightweight plastic. Not easy to recycle, so not a great choice for the environment.
