THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MOUNTAIN BIKE CLIPLESS PEDALS

It’s interesting to note that the name “clipless,” often thought of as a misnomer since you actually do have to clip into them, came about when there was a need to differentiate from the original pedals that have clip-on toe cages and platform pedals that don’t come with the cage. Sometimes you will still see these “clip” or “cage” pedals on hipster or fixed gear bikes. You can read more about how the name “clipless” came about here.

PEDAL STYLE

Choosing a mountain bike clipless pedal that’s going to feel right and ride well will firstly come down to making sure you select one that’s built for your intended riding style.

There are three main pedal styles:

Cross Country (AKA “XC”) pedals are the most minimal looking pedal style. They don’t have a platform or cage surrounding the claw mechanism that the cleat clicks into. They are often designed to be lightweight, just like other XC components.

Trail pedals are designed to be lightweight but also offer a small platform around the claw mechanism which gives you extra traction on the pedal and more support around your foot.

Enduro or All-Mountain pedals will feature a chunky and solid platform around the claw mechanism. While not outrightly heavy, they are commonly twice the weight of a XC pedal. The robust platform gives your foot more support and protects the claw mechanism in case you encounter rough and rocky trails that could damage the mechanism. Because this style of riding is all about downhill speed and not uphill, lightweight is often not the priority.

SPRING TENSION

This tension on the spring relates to how tight or softly the cleat is held in the claw mechanism. Many, but not all, clipless mountain bike pedals have varying amounts of adjustment so that you can tighten or loosen the spring tension.

The looser the spring tension, the easier it is to click in and out of the pedal. However some pedals, such as the HT Components, are well known to be very tight. Some experienced riders prefer the feeling of a tight spring, but tight spring tension probably won’t be favorable to beginner riders new to clipless pedals.

WEIGHT

If you are all about the numbers and you are into racing cross country, then weight is really important. However if you’re out there having a good time and just love riding your bike, then the weight of the pedal is probably not such a big deal – and not worth paying extra money to have a super light set of pedals.

Keep in mind that Enduro and All-Mountain pedals will naturally be heavier due to the extra material in the platform and extra strength required for really rough trails.

COST

As with anything, there is a huge spread in the cost of a set of pedals. This comes down to weight, materials, and even the brand. There are some excellent value for money options in the short list, so don’t overlook these if you’re on a budget.

MAINTENANCE

Pedals house a bearing which allows the pedal to turn on the spindle. When the pedal stops spinning freely or begins to feel loose (you may not understand this now – but when your pedal is loose on the spindle, you will be able to feel it when you ride), that means it requires some maintenance to get it back in shape.

There are a few options for maintaining your pedals depending on your pedal style:

1. Your pedal has a sealed bearing, in which case you can dismantle and replace the bearing if the manufacturer offers it.
2. Your pedal has a serviceable bearing, in which case you can dismantle the bearing and re-grease it. If you are mechanically minded, you can check out how to do this on Youtube or simply take your pedal to your local bike shop and have them do it for you.

It is best to routinely check your pedals as they can easily fill with dirt and grit or the bearing can dry out and require more grease. Prevention is always better than a cure!

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CLEATS

Cleats are the metal attachments that screw into your clipless mountain bike shoes. The cleats click into the claw mechanism of the pedal. Most brands have their own proprietary cleats, which they will include with each set of pedals.

Shimano has a system called SPD (Shimano Pedal Dynamics) which are considered an industry standard. Many brands will have their own cleats but will also be SPD cleat compatible to make it easy to transition pedals.

PLATFORM AND CAGE

This is the metal piece that surrounds the claw mechanism. Enduro and All-Mountain style pedals will have a larger platform, while Trail pedals will have a smaller and often thinner surrounding mechanism known as a cage. They are used to provide extra support to your foot while riding.

SPRING TENSION

This refers to how easy or hard it is to click into the pedal. There is a spring on the claw mechanism which can be tightened or loosened depending if you prefer to be held really securely in the pedal or if you prefer to be a little looser and easier to click out.

BEARINGS

The bearing is housed within the pedal and allows the spindle and pedal to spin freely.

SPINDLE

This is the cylindrical piece that attaches the pedal to the bike.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MOUNTAIN BIKE UNDER $500

WHERE AND HOW YOU RIDE

Choosing a mountain bike that is suitable for where and how you plan on riding is essential to ensure you enjoy riding every time you go out. Most entry level mountain bikes are suited to trail riding and cross country mountain biking, as described below. The manufacturing methods, build quality, componentry and suspension is specific to this style of riding. If you plan on riding big jumps, drop offs, or gnarly downhill then it is best to select a bike that suits these conditions and will most likely involve a higher price tag.

RIDE STYLE

Trail Riding is a less technical style of riding. It can include gravel roads and wide open trails. The climbs and descents are generally easier and not so steep. A hardtail (front suspension only) or rigid (no suspension) mountain bike is appropriate for this style of riding.

Cross Country Mountain Biking is a more technical and challenging style of riding. It typically involves steeper climbs and descents, and narrow trails – also known as singletrack. The terrain can be more technical and include rocks, roots and lots of corners. A hardtail (front suspension only) or rigid (no suspension) mountain bike is appropriate for this style of riding.

FRAME MATERIALS

Aluminum is the most common frame material. It is low cost and easy to use in manufacturing, meaning a lot of entry level and lower cost bikes are made from this material. It is lightweight yet strong.

Steel is less commonly used as it is more expensive to use in manufacturing. It is very strong and has excellent flexible properties.

SUSPENSION

Most mountain bikes use mechanical shock absorbers in the front of the bike. Higher end bikes and those suited for more rough terrain will also have suspension in the rear of the bike. Suspension smooths out the ride and allows greater comfort and control on rough terrain. 

Rigid bikes have no suspension.

Hardtail bikes have suspension on the front only.

Full Suspension bikes have suspension at the front and rear. None of the bikes listed here are full suspension as these typically have a higher cost.

29” Wheels are excellent for holding speed and rolling over obstacles. Cross-country bikes are most commonly designed with this wheel size. Taller riders also suit this wheel size best.

27.5” Wheels are more nimble and suited to tight, technical terrain that requires fast maneuvering. Trail bikes are most commonly designed with this wheel size. Shorter riders also tend to prefer this wheel size.

26” Wheels are not as common, but they reduce the overall height and length of a bike, making it easier to control. These bikes are typically suited to very short riders.

Fat Tires are most commonly found on 27.5” wheels. Fat tires are larger than normal tires and can be run at lower pressures. They absorb shock and grip the trail, but are heavier than a standard tire.

TRAVEL

“Travel” refers to how far the suspension will travel while you ride; if a mountain bike has 100mm of travel, then the suspension will compress 100mm. DRIVETRAIN

Refers to the mechanisms which aid in the bike moving forward. This includes: the crankset (the thing the pedals are attached to); the chain that transfers the power between the crankset and the rear wheel; and the cassette (a set of cogs), which is also simply known as the gears that are attached to the rear wheel.

DISC BRAKES

These are a style of mountain bike brake. Most modern mountain bikes are equipped with disc brakes as they offer quick and even stopping power.  The caliper – which works like a clamp – grips the metal rotor on the wheel to bring the bike to a quick stop. 

Mechanical disc brakes use a cable that is connected between the brake lever and the disc brake. When the brake lever is pulled, it tightens the cable which forces the caliper to close on the rotor.

Hydraulic disc brakes use fluid to actuate the braking mechanism. Hydraulic brakes are the gold standard in brakes.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKEPACKING BAGS

STYLE

There are seven main styles of bikepacking bags listed above:

Trunk Bag

These sit on top of a rear rack and are one of the larger bags used when bikepacking.

Pannier

These are used in a pair for even weight distribution and are typically attached to a rear or front rack. Panniers will often boast the largest carrying capacity of all the bags available for bikepacking.

Seat-Pack or Saddle-Bag

These attach to your seat and seat post and come in a variety of sizes. They are often used for lightweight touring and bikepacking.

Frame Bag

These sit in the middle triangle of your bike frame and will either take up the entire area (full frame bag) or part of the area (half frame bag). Frame bags are great for storing heavier items as they help keep the center of gravity low when riding.

Top Tube Bag

These are small bags that sit on the top tube of your bike. Top tube bags are commonly used for storing valuables and ride nutrition and they provide easy access while riding.

Feed Bag

These attach to your handlebars and are a small bag for storing food for riding. Easy to access while riding.

Handlebar Bag

These attach to the front of your handlebars and are commonly used to carry bulky but lightweight items. Smaller handlebar bags can be used to carry valuables and snacks for easy access.

YOUR BIKEPACKING TRIP

The length of your trip will determine how many bags you may need. A short weekend trip may only require a seat pack and handlebar bag, while a multi-week trip may require panniers and a trunk bag, handlebar bag, and toptube bag. Remember, the longer your trip, the more you will need to carry.

Your planned bikepacking route will also play an important role in choosing bags. If you plan on getting off the beaten track and sleeping out under the stars and you know there won’t be a Starbucks or Chipotle in sight for quick and easy food then you’ll need to carry more equipment than if you are riding from town to town, staying in accommodations, and buying supplies at restaurants or grocery stores daily.

CAPACITY

How much do you actually need to carry, what does will weigh, and what sort of space will it take up? Knowing the answers to these types of questions will help determine the type of bikepacking bag or bags you choose.

ACCESS

Think about what will go into each bag and how often you may need access to your gear or food. Easy access like a zipper or drawstring may be useful for grabbing valuables or snacks on-the-go, but a roll top with buckle may work better for storing things like your warm jacket and a spare pair of socks that you may only access once a day. It’s usually helpful to have a couple of different styles of bags for your bikepacking trip, some that provide easy access and others that are only used once a day or less.

SIZE MATTERS

Bikepacking bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Bigger is not always better as it can often encourage you to pack more than what you really need. WEIGHT

There are two weight considerations:

The Weight You Can Carry: Just because you can buy a lot of bags and you’re able to carry bags with a huge carrying capacity doesn’t mean you should. Traveling light is going to make the journey much more enjoyable as you will be able to cycle with more ease and tackle more interesting and exciting routes. Not to mention that an overloaded bike is often quite unstable to ride and carrying too much for the size and strength of the rider is not safe. The Weight Of The Bags should also play a role in selecting a bag – you want something lightweight as it is important to keep weight down when bikepacking. The more everything weighs, the more energy you will expend cycling and the harder it may be to ride up some of those big mountains.

WATERPROOF VS WATER RESISTANT VS WEATHER PROOF

If you are comfortable riding in any weather including rain, look for a bag that is rated waterproof to ensure your gear stays dry and safe.

If you are a fair weather rider and plan on staying inside warm and dry when it’s raining out then you could consider a water resistant option. Water resistant bags will likely keep splashes from creeks or rivers out and short periods of very light rain won’t do any damage to your gear, but they’re are not guaranteed to keep water out completely.

Choose wisely as you don’t want to be caught out in a summer rainstorm with your gear and gadgets in a bag that isn’t protected against the elements.

Roll Top

These systems are commonly used on waterproof and dustproof bags. The top of the bag closes together and then folds over itself to roll down.

Buckle System

This is a male – female plastic closing device. It is made of two pieces that lock into one another forming a strong closure. To open you simply push two pieces of plastic together and it releases.

Flap Or Overflap

This is an additional piece of material that comes over the top of the pannier that helps with keeping the elements out. The flap is often magnetized to keep the bag closed while riding.

CRADLE

A separate piece of hardware that attaches to the handlebar. It is a rigid structure, commonly made from hard plastic.

REAR OR FRONT RACK

A metal rack that attaches to the rear or front of the bike. Racks are specifically designed to carry various bags from panniers to trunk bags.

EXTERNAL STRAP

A piece of thick strapping material that wraps around the bag. With an external strap, you can clip small attachments onto the outside of the bag or slide gear into the straps such as small tent poles.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING FAT BIKE TIRES 

FIT FOR PURPOSE

Fat bike tires are great for riding on super soft and loose terrain, such as snow, sand, mud and slush. However some fat bike tires are designed specifically for hard packed surfaces or even ice covered ground, so make sure you keep in mind the typical terrain and surface you plan on riding to select the best tire for the trail.

WIDTH

There are many advantages to running a fatter (or wider) tire such as:

• The ability to run lower tire pressure which offers a supple and more comfortable ride.
• More float over soft surfaces such as snow and sand as the tire has more surface area which stops it from digging in and prevents you from getting stuck.
• Plenty of traction and grip as there is more surface area for the tire to have contact with the ground.
• The fatter the tire, the better it will handle all of these factors and conditions.

The widths of fat bike tires listed here are between 3” and 4.8”.

A 3” tire, while not technically considered a fat bike tire, is significantly wider than a standard mountain bike tire (which sits between 2” – 2.4”). Tires with a 3” width are often used on fat bikes when speed is required and the trail conditions are still relatively hard packed. 

Fat bike tires go all the way up to 5” wide, which make for some seriously fat tires. Although a 5” wide tire may be slower and heavier, it will easily ride through very loose and soft surfaces like slush and soft sand.

WILL IT FIT?

There are two major considerations when looking at choosing the best fat bike tire for your bike, and these come down to compatibility. The frame size and width to ensure the tire can spin freely and is not too tight or wide for your frame. The second is the width of your rim, a wider tire requires a wider rim. 

Frame Size And Width – Every frame is different and for the fat bike tires reviewed above, you will need a fat bike specific frame. Additionally, not every fat bike has the capability to fit the fattest of fat bike tires. So ensure you measure your fat bike before purchasing tires to avoid disappointment.

Rim Width – the rim, which is the circular part of your wheel, comes in different widths which is compatible with certain tire widths – so ensure your rim and tire choice are compatible.

TREAD PATTERN

This is the texture on the surface of the tire that aids in fast rolling or grip.

KNOBS

This term refers to the chunks of rubber that are raised from the surface of the tire. Knobs often come in different sizes, shapes, and patterns. These are what give the tire grip and they are designed to perform on specific surfaces.

ROLLING SPEED OR ROLLING RESISTANCE

This refers to how easily the tire rolls. Some tires will have better rolling resistance which means they roll quicker than others. This is determined by everything from weight to shape to tread pattern to the material they are manufactured from. You can learn more about rolling resistance here.

CLINCHER

TIRE BEAD

Tire bead is the term for the edge of a tire that sits on the wheel. The edge of the tire, known as the bead of a tire, is designed to sit within a groove on the wheel. When the tire is properly inflated to the correct air pressure (each tire will specify the correct air pressure), the bead slots firmly into that groove. This holds the tire in place on the wheel.

BEAD TYPE

There are two main types of tire bead:

Wire bead is a traditional bead technology – it is often heavier.

Folding bead is a more modern technology that is lighter weight. It is known as a folding bead as without the wire the tire can be folded for transport.

TIRE SIZE 

Tires come in a variety of sizes. The ones reviewed here are either 26”, 27.5”, or 29”, which refers to the diameter of the tire. Each bike is specifically sized and this is not something you can change. Your bike will have one of these sizes and you need to look for a tire that is that specific size. You can either measure the current diameter of your tires, or take your bike into a bike shop and they will be able to tell you what size it has.

THREADS PER INCH (TPI)

The casing of a tire is made from threads of rubber. Tires are measured with how many threads there are per inch. Threads per inch (TPI) is a common indicator of the quality of the casing of a tire. Higher TPI tires are lighter weight and provide a more supple (comfortable) ride. Lower TPI tires are durable and provide greater stability.

CARRYING CAPACITY

The Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 is an ultralight tent that has been recently redesigned to give it steeper walls and more interior space than the older model. It’s a great option if you’re looking to cut weight but aren’t willing to splurge on a high end, super light tent. 

What we loved the most about this tent is it is light but still can be set up with proper tent poles. Some other ultralight tents on this list need to be pitched with trekking poles, which is resourceful but it puts some people, especially new backpackers off. 

The Fly Creek HV UL2 might not cut it for true ultralight hikers who count every ounce. Our biggest drawback is the single door. That’s fine if you’re going to use this tent for solo adventures but it’s a real pain for two people. On that note, unless you and your partner are short and slim, sleeping two people in this thing is going to be a struggle. 

In conclusion, this is a good option for solo hikers who are looking for a practical lightweight tent to use in summer and spring.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A TENT FOR BIKE TOURING

WEIGHT

When bike touring, every ounce matters. The more weight you have, the harder you have to work to carry it around. Lightweight tent options are plentiful and there are plenty of multi-person tents available to share the weight of the tent with your fellow bike tourers.

TENT STYLE

There are three main styles of bike touring tents:

Bivy Tent

These are the smallest style of bikepacking tent. They have minimal height and are very compact and lightweight. This style will generally only fit one person and their sleeping gear. You will not be able to sit up inside the tent. Read more about Bivy Tents and Bivy Sacks here.

Single Pole

This style of tent has a single main pole in the center and the edges are staked out to give the tent its shape. Single pole tents come in a variety of sizes. They can be lightweight but do take some practice to pitch.

Exoskeletal Frame

Tents with an external frame use poles that snap together to form the skeleton (structure) of the frame. They can come in either multi-hooped design, X- design, or T-section. These tents are quick to pitch and semi-freestanding. They still require staking but will hold their structure even without being staked down, making set-up super easy.

INTERNAL TENT SPACE

How many people do you want to fit in the tent? Do you want to fit your gear and packs in there too? These are all questions to ask yourself as they will help determine the best tent option for you. 

An advantage of choosing a multi-person tent instead of each person on the trip having a solo tent is the overall weight is not doubled from a single to double person tent. This means you can share the weight of your tent with your bike touring buddy, helping to reduce the overall weight each of you are carrying.

PACKED SIZE

Typically the length of the poles has the biggest impact on the length of the packed size. Ensure the packed tent can fit onto your bike, whether it’s inside bags or perhaps on your front handlebars. Alternatively you can store the poles and stakes separately to the canopy and rainfly to help distribute the weight.

TENT SHELLS

Rain Fly

This is the outer shell that is designed out of waterproof material and will often have additional waterproof coatings. The seams on the rainfly will also be specially sealed to increase the waterproof qualities. This shell is attached over the top of the tent.

Ventilated Mesh Inner

This is often the inner layer and main component of the tent shell. It’s made from a mesh material which allows for ventilation, helping you stay cool and comfortable while camping in the warmer months. During the warmer months and in good weather these can be used on their own. If used in conjunction with the rainfly, a mesh inner allows for airflow which decreases the chance of condensation forming. Less condensation = more heat so you can stay toasty in the cooler months as well.

Unified Rain Fly

This is a single shell that integrates the rainfly into the main component of the tent shell. Tents with a unified rainfly can be pitched without getting the inside wet even if you’re setting up in the rain.

PITCHING

This is the term used to describe putting the tent up.

STAKES

These are made from metal or strong plastic and are used to hold the tent to the ground.

POLES

These are most commonly made from aluminium and will either dismantle or be adjustable so they can be stored in short lengths for easy transport. The aluminium poles that dismantle are very easy to use, simply by sliding them in or out of one another to create longer poles that are used in the exoskeletal tent design.  

POLE DESIGNS

There are a variety of designs that use aluminium poles that join together. The advantage of this is the poles are compact yet when joined together they form a flexible yet strong structure. The tent shell is then attached to this structure. There are a variety of ways these poles can be used:

Hooped designs use lengths of aluminium poles that create a flexible semi circle. A tent with a hooped design will feature 2 or more hoops that are placed at either end of the tent, which creates the structure of the tent.

X-Style designs use equal lengths of aluminium poles that create a flexible semi circle. Two of these poles are crossed over one another to create an X shape and form the structure of the tent.

T-Style designs use two varying lengths of aluminium poles. The longer length pole forms a semicircle while the shorter length poles connect to the middle of the long pole to form a T-shape.

STRUCTURE

Freestanding tents are a sturdy structure that do not require stakes to be inserted into the ground to hold them upright.

Semi-Freestanding tents are a sturdy structure that can stand on its own when pitched. However, they require staking into the ground to hold them in place.

Non-Freestanding tents have no independent structure and can not stand on their own without being staked into the ground.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BIKE TOP TUBE BAG

Ask yourself these two questions: 

How many snacks do I want to carry? – (Correct Answer – all of them)

Do I want to store my phone and/or camera for taking instagram photos? – (Correct Answer – umm of course)

All jokes aside, snacks and phones/cameras are the main things that are carried within a top tube bag, so it is worthwhile considering exactly what you would like to store in the bag. Knowing what you’ll keep in your top tube bag will help you determine the size of bag you need, the opening system you’d prefer, and whether or not you need a waterproof bag.

SIZE AND WEIGHT

Everything from super compact top tube bags right through to pretty large bags with decent storage capacity are available. Make sure you choose a bag that comfortably fits everything you want to carry in it. Also consider the weight of what you plan on storing, as you don’t want to overload the bag and have a bulky mass on your top tube affecting the way the bike handles.

MOUNTING SYSTEM

There are two main mounting systems for top tube bags:

Straps

Whether Velcro, hook & loop, or a strap with a buckle, all types of straps will all affix in a similar way. Measure the diameter of your top tube and compare that to the strap length to ensure the strap will fit around the tube firmly. Some top tube bags are noted for having straps that won’t cinch down tightly enough, leaving a bag that is less than secure.  So measure twice, buy once!

Bolts

Some bikes are built with bolt mounts on the top tube. These are generally high end gravel bikes (like the Salsa Cutthroat), touring bikes, or if you are lucky enough to have a custom built bike then you can ask for these to be added. Bolting the bag to the frame is simple enough and ensures a very stable bag, meaning you can also do away with the straps for a super clean look.

DO NOT attempt to mount a bolt system to a frame that did not come from the manufacturer with bolt mounts! You will not only damage your frame but also risk your safety by compromising the integrity of the entire bike. 

CAPACITY

Choose a top tube bag that will comfortably fit all your snacks and gear in it, but don’t go too big just for the sake of it. Having just a few things in a 1.2L capacity bag can have them rattling and rolling about. 

ACCESS

Top tube bags have various closure systems and open in different ways. Consider your confidence level and ability to take one hand off the bar and open your bag while riding. Perhaps you may feel more confident with a velcro system compared to a zipper, and a book or flap style opening compared to a slot style opening. 

WATERPROOF VS WATER RESISTANT VS WEATHER PROOF

What you plan on carrying in your top tube bag will play a role in deciding whether a waterproof bag is a necessity. If it’s simply gels or wrapped energy bars, then a water resistant or weather proof option may be suitable. If you plan on carrying your phone, a small camera, or your wallet, a waterproof bag will give you peace of mind.

Hook And Loop

This is a mounting system that is a strap of velcro that loops through a typically plastic ring, simply tighten around the top tube of your bike frame to the perfect tension.

Bolt System

The top tube bag has two small bolt holes inside the bag that align to two mounting bolts on the top tube of your frame. Simply bolt the bag to the frame for secure mounting. Only select gravel, touring specific or custom made bikes may come with these bolts – it’s important to note the spacing between the bolts on your frame and the bolt holes in the bag as they may not be the same.

SOFT STRAPS

The hook & loop straps are made of special material that is softer than normal to reduce rubbing on your frame which will protect the frame and paint work.

BOOK STYLE OPENING OR FLAP LID

This refers to the way in which the bag opens. The entire top section of the bag flips open like a book cover allowing easy access into the bag.

SLOT STYLE OPENING

This refers to the way in which the bag opens. This is a simple slot opening similar to a zippered pencil case.

WELDED SEAMS

The seams of the bag are taped, otherwise known as welded, to ensure the item is waterproof or water resistant. Without the seams being taped there would be a chance the seams would leak where they have been stitched.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MOUNTAIN BIKING GLOVES

FIT AND FEEL

The best mountain biking gloves fit your hand like a second skin. They should feel firm, but not restrictive. The finger length should not feel like it is putting pressure on your fingertips or they will be uncomfortable when wearing them for long periods of time. Excess material can cause irritation and rubbing which may result in blisters.

PROTECTION

There are various thicknesses and protective components on mountain biking gloves. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKE FRAME BAGS

Choosing a frame bag isn’t as easy as you might first think, so it’s really important to understand what to look out for when weighing your options. The main consideration is in working out the right sized bag to fit your bike frame – there are a lot of measurements involved as you probably noted in the specifications listed above, so we are going to unpack those complex algorithms and make it really simple to ensure when you purchase your bike frame bag it actually fits your touring bike.

SIZE IS EVERYTHING

Measure your bike frame twice and purchase your bike bag once!

This a key step when looking for a bike bag. Knowing the dimensions on your frame will ensure that you select an option that will actually fit comfortably within your bike frame. Many frame bag manufacturers release their frame bags in various sizes and even shapes to allow you to choose ones that fit. More often than not, the higher priced frame bags will have these options and the lower priced options will be a “one size fits most” situation. An XS, S, or XL frame will likely mean that one size fits most bikes.

• Step 1: Measure the length of the underside of the top tube on your bike
• Step 2: Measure the length of the inside of the seat tube on your bike
• Step 3: Compare these measurements to the frame bag Important to note: It’s better to choose a frame bag that is a bit too small rather than a bit too big as it will bunch and sag if its oversized.

STYLE

There are three main styles of bike bags:

Full Frame Bag

These take up the entire inside of the frame. You will have to remove any water bottle cages from the inside of the frame.

Half Frame Bag

These hang from the top tube and only take up roughly half of the frame. Depending on the size and design of your frame, you should be able to keep one water bottle cage on your bike or two if you run a larger frame or the design allows.

Wedge Frame Bag

These tuck into the front wedge or triangle of the bike frame, leaving the rear water bottle cage in place.

CAPACITY

Choose a bag that is going to comfortably carry what you need because there is nothing worse than riding along with an overstuffed frame bag. Not only can it bulge and knock against your legs when pedaling, but you can also damage the bag and break the zippers if you overload it, making your frame bag unusable.

WEIGHT

This consideration is less about the weight of the bag itself, but more about the weight you are going to put inside it. Although it may fit 4L of gear, you probably don’t want to put 4L worth of rocks in there. It’s going to damage the bag and really affect the handling of the bike. The Ortleib Frame Pack specifies 6L and 9.5oz, so use that as a guide when packing your frame bag.

WATERPROOF VS WATER RESISTANT VS WEATHER PROOF

Fair weather riders will have no problem with a bike bag that is considered water resistant or weather proof. A light rainfall or splashes from a puddle or creek will not be a problem with any of these ratings. But if you are hardcore and ride rain, hail, or shine, then look for a bag that has a definiate waterproof rating. It’s no fun finding your map, phone, snacks, or spare pair of socks swimming inside your frame bag.

It’s also worth noting the better water protection the frame bag has, the more likely it will be to able to keep dust out of your frame bag too.

CLOSURE SYSTEMS

HOOK AND LOOP: This is a mounting system that is a strap of velcro that loops through a plastic ring – the strap folds back on itself to tighten. Excellent for being able to micro adjust the fit.

DAISY CHAIN: A strap or elastic that loops across itself multiple times and is usually fixed with a toggle. Allows you to easily loosen and tighten.

HYDRATION PORT

A small opening that fits a hydration hose. This feature allows you to store liquid in a hydration pack inside the frame bag and thread the hydration house out. These hydration ports are also commonly used for cables such as a light cord connecting to a battery.

SOFT STRAPS

Many frame bags are fitted with specially designed straps that minimize damage to the frame when a frame bag is attached.

PADDED BAGS

Higher end models of frame bags generally feature padding where the frame bag meets the frame to ensure the contents of your bags don’t rub or damage the paintwork on your bike.

EXTERNAL STRAP
