The UP-X1 from Omer is an excellent purpose-built apnea diving watch that’s perfect for serious spearfishers. We have several different displays and monitors – including depth, dive time, and water temperature – that are easy to interact with thanks to four chunky buttons.

One of those buttons is dedicated to the watch’s backlight, making it easy to illuminate in low-light situations. We’re also pleased that the UP-X1 can switch between salt and freshwater modes, which affect the watch’s depth display. In terms of looks, this watch has a very aesthetically pleasing carbon fiber face ring, making it a classy addition to your spearfishing gear list. 

Unfortunately, the computer-based program for downloading and viewing your dive records is PC only and will not work for Mac users, which is a disappointment for many. While the heart rate monitor is a useful addition, the cumbersome process of cinching on a chest strap may be a turn off for some. Overall, however, this is a solid product and certainly one of the best spearfishing watches on the market.

The F-10 allows you to program up to three different depth alarms to measure your progress and maintain safe diving practices. We also have our standard depth, time, temperature, and dive time indicators for a full suite of information whenever we need it. Take note that the F-10 does not include a heart rate monitor, but this may be a non-issue for many hunters out there. 

Many users report that the Oceanic F-10 has a steep learning curve, compounded by the fact that there’s no physical instruction manual included with your purchase. However, Oceanic provides a comprehensive manual online. While we wouldn’t recommend the F-10 for new divers due to its complexity, we believe it’s the best spearfishing watch for overall quality and functionality.

Spearfishing watches can make tremendous leaps in price in the blink of an eye. On one end, we have our affordable budget options that hover around $100. However, as features and quality improve, the price can suddenly jump to almost $1000! So, keep an eye on your personal finance and budget constraints, and purchase a spearfishing watch accordingly. The lower-budget options still provide excellent features and data, which brings us to the next item to consider: functionality. 

FUNCTIONALITY  

In the world of digital dive watches, it is very easy to drift from the basic freediving/apnea focused watch towards more high-end SCUBA focused watches. Therefore, it’s very important to focus on the features and information you want your watch to collect, and stick to that criteria. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself with a high-performing premium watch jam-packed with features that you’ll never use. 

Specifically, keep an eye open for depth, dive time, surface time, and programmable alarms. These are the cornerstone features that we think all spearos should have on their watches. From this starting point, it’s easy to pick and choose additional features that you’d like your watch to include. 

SALT AND FRESHWATER MODES    

Saltwater is denser than fresh, which is why you typically need to strap on more weights for saltwater diving to achieve the same level of buoyancy – check how to calculate your dive weight at LeisurePro. However, these density changes don’t just throw off your buoyancy, they also affect your spearfishing watch. Specifically, your depth is measured using water pressure which is in turn affected by the water density. The best spearfishing watches, therefore, have salt and freshwater modes in order to provide accurate data. 

However, the actual difference between salt and freshwater depth data for relatively shallow spearfishing is fairly minimal – 33 vs 34 feet. So don’t panic if your watch doesn’t offer this option, check with the manufacturer to determine the default settings.

MEMORY

This is the amount of digital information that your spearfishing watch can store before it will start to delete data. The standard value is 99 dives, while other premium watches can boost this value to 200 or more. 

Now that’s not to say that your dive information will be lost forever when you reach this memory limit. The best spearfishing watches will often include a method for transferring that data to your phone or computer – usually via Bluetooth or a USB cable. 

BATTERY TYPE 

In this department, we have only two options: replaceable or rechargeable batteries. Replaceable batteries typically exhibit improved longevity, but they’ll eventually need to be replaced. These days, the best spearfishing watches are very user-friendly and make it easy for you to replace the battery yourself. However, some manufacturers still require you to go to a certified dive shop or service center for battery replacement, which can be a major hassle. 

On the flip side, we have rechargeable batteries. These batteries are incredibly convenient as they allow you to recharge them whenever needed, no replacements necessary. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A WRIST DIVE COMPUTER

DIVING SKILL LEVEL

You’ve no doubt noticed that the list of possible features can fluctuate considerably from computer to computer. It’s therefore very important to consider what type of diving you have planned, and use that as a platform from which to make an informed decision.

If you’re brand new to diving, the latest and greatest wrist dive computer with all the bells and whistles, mixed gas capability, and customizable trimix settings is likely overkill for your needs. Then again, if you are an advanced technical diver, make sure you read through all the computer’s specifications to make sure you find one that fits your type of diving.

Remember, these devices are designed to be rugged, long-lasting, and accurate. Because when you are over a hundred feet underwater, your life may well depend on it. BATTERY LIFE AND REPLACEMENTS

Your shiny new wrist dive computer will, unfortunately, need some more power one day. We therefore highly recommend you read the specs for your perspective computer beforehand to make sure you know how to give it more juice when the time comes.

Some computers use a battery that you can simply remove and replace with minimal fuss. Other models are rechargeable and come with a cable so you can keep them topped off for every dive. Still other models require you to contact the manufacturer directly, and send your device to a service center for battery replacement. The last option is by far the most troublesome, especially if you’re on the clock for an upcoming diving trip, so make sure you read the specifications beforehand.

AIR INTEGRATION

Your console gauge and/or computer would traditionally be tethered to your tank and rest over your shoulder and display the pressure left in your tank. Console computers will also complete the extra step of computing your time left before ascending. However, having these devices dangling in space is certainly inconvenient, which is where the best wrist dive computers come in.

However, having a hose from your tank snake up your arm and connect to your watch is simply ridiculous. The solution? Air integration. This allows you to attach a small device to your first-stage, connect it wirelessly to your computer, and you’re good to go!

NAVIGATION

GAS MIXING

Many of the best wrist dive computers feature multi-mode functionality to support different gas mixes when diving. But what exactly are those mixes?

The entry point for all divers is standard atmospheric air. This is quite literally air – nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other trace gasses – that’s been filtered, dehumidified, and compressed into a scuba tank.

Many divers will eventually move on to a Nitrox gas mixture to increase their dive time and reduce decompression limits. This involves increasing the amount of oxygen in their gas until it makes up approximately 30-35% of the total gas volume, thereby reducing the risk of decompression sickness – caused by excess nitrogen bubbles in their bodies.

A third common gas mixture is trimix. Helium is added into the mixture to reduce the chances of absorbing too much oxygen – leading to oxygen toxicity – and therefore increasing the scuba diving depth limits.

ALGORITHMS

The plethora of calculations that your computer completes in order to monitor your diving activity, safe bottom time, and decompression stops are complicated, to say the least. Many different models have been adopted over the years to complete these calculations, and some are more conservative than others. Meaning that different computers will sometimes cut your dive short out of an abundance of caution, while others will lower that safety factor and let you stay under longer.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A GRIP TRAINER

TYPE

There are more types of grip trainers than routes at your climbing gym. It’s therefore very important for you to recognize those types, and what they train.

Trigger-grip is one of the most common. It features two handles connected at the top by some time of resistance mechanism and is gripped in one hand trying to pull those two handles together. Ring grips are another common trainer and are a simple rubber ring with a certain amount of resistance. Therapy balls are yet another type of grip trainer that, like trigger and ring grips, work your flexion strength.

Working your individual fingers is just as important as your grip, however. You’ll consequently find several grip trainers that focus solely on individual fingers by providing independent spring pads for each finger to work. There are also mini versions of the trigger grip trainer that are designed to be held by only one or two fingers at a time.

Lastly, we have grip trainers that focus on finger extension rather than flexion. These trainers have loops or holes for each individual finger, and provide resistance as you try to extend your fingers out as if signaling ‘stop’.

ADJUSTABILITY

What’s our goal in purchasing some grip trainers? To get stronger! But as your strength increases, so to must your grip trainer’s resistance or you risk your strength plateauing. That’s where adjustability comes in.

Several of the best grip trainers offer some method to increase or decrease their resistance. Most often in the form of a tensioner dial. These trainers can progress with you as your grip develops or be dialed down to accommodate an injury. Adjustability, however, most often comes at the cost of durability. There are three primary training focuses amongst grip trainers: hand, finger, and extension strength. Let’s be clear, everyone’s training needs are different and no single training focus is guaranteed to make you a better climber. But there are steps you can take to get you on the right path.

At this juncture, it’s absolutely crucial for you to take a hard look at yourself and identify the parts of your grip that are weakest. Do you seriously struggle with crimps and pockets? If that’s the case, then consider focusing your training on individual finger strength.

One drawback of the Hummingbird is the fit is pretty snug. If you’re a side sleeper or a bigger guy or gal, you might find the narrow dimensions claustrophobic. While Marmot has certainly produced a beautiful sleeping bag in the Phase 20, it seems they tripped themselves over the zipper. The most common drawback we’re seeing across the board is a small and weak zipper that perpetually snags. So keep this in mind, and remember to handle that zipper with care if you commit to this sleeping bag.

BEST DOUBLE SLEEPING BAG

The Feathered Friends Spoonbill UL is a two-person sleeping bag for couples who want to lighten their load.

What we love the most about the Spoonbill UL is it gives couples the warmth and intimacy of being in the same bag without having to give up comfort. There are two hoods and two collars that can be adjusted and a zip on each side so you don’t have to worry about bothering your partner when you get in and out. Feathered Friends trimmed unnecessary insulation from the bottom part of the bag and the floor is made of a super lightweight Dyneema fabric. All of this results in a warm, lightweight and comfortable sleeping bag. 

One of the downsides of the Spoonbill is it’s not great for couples who want to cuddle because of its two separate hoods. Another consideration is its price tag is pretty crazy, however if you consider the price of two premium sleeping bags, it might be worthwhile. It also loses major points when it comes to versatility. If one of you decides to go on a solo trip, you’ll need a different bag.

BEST FOR: BUDGET SYNTHETIC SLEEPING BAG 

Synthetic insulation has been slowly retreating from the backpacking realm for some time, but it’s still a viable option for a budget hiker. The Trestles Elite Eco 20 is therefore our top synthetic recommendation for not breaking the bank but still hitting that 20 degree rating. 

The proprietary HL-ElixR insulation resists moisture reasonably well, which is certainly a benefit in wet weather. It’s also plenty warm for the majority of your hiking adventures and is very comfortable to curl up in. The drawback to this synthetic insulation, however, is that it is heavier than down and won’t pack down as much for transport. 

But we can’t argue with such a low price, and we definitely feel that the Trestles Elite Eco 20 is a great entry-level sleeping bag. Perfect if you plan on camping only intermittently, or aren’t ready to make a major investment quite yet.

Finally! A down sleeping bag that doesn’t leave our bank accounts in tears. The Kelty Cosmic 20 provides all the essentials we need in backpacking sleeping bag at a very reasonable price, earning it a place amongst the best 20 degree sleeping bags. 

The 600-fill power is definitely lower than most of the competition, but still manages to provide sufficient insulation in cooler temperatures. Kelty also includes a water repellent treatment to try and lockout as much moisture as possible and keep that down nice and fluffy. We’re also pleased with the external stash pocket to keep gear close, or store your favorite fuzzy sleeping socks when packing up in the morning. 

Keep in mind that the lower price of the Cosmic comes at the expense of build quality and materials. While certainly functional, it lacks the premium feel and durability of the competition. So if you’re liking the low budget Cosmic option, be sure to take care of it!

We know blankets and quilts that weigh more than that! What’s more, the Hyperion packs down to only 3.7 liters, taking up almost no room in your pack. 

So how’d they do it? High-quality down for one. The 900-fill insulation is incredibly lofty for excellent warmth, yet very compressible and lightweight when it’s time to move. The majority of the insulation is also located on the top portion of the sleeping bag, with less behind your back. As much as this insulation distribution helps the weight, it does mean you should have a decently insulated sleeping pad to keep from getting cold. 

Therm-a-Rest has also adopted a fairly narrow design that tapers significantly. This can be bad news for you side-sleepers out there as you may take the sleeping bag with you when you roll and expose the less insulated side to the air. But we understand that sacrifices have to be made to achieve such a lightweight design, and believe the Hyperion 20 may be every ultralight hiker’s dream.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING THE BEST 20 DEGREE SLEEPING BAGS

DOWN VS SYNTHETIC

It’s an age-old question in the hiking sleeping bag debate, so let’s cover the pros and cons of each. Down has earned its stripes as the backpacking material of choice thanks to its excellent insulating properties yet very low weight. It also compresses down very well to take up minimal space in your back pack. Its two classic drawbacks are moisture and price.

Down will start to clump up almost immediately when it gets wet, effectively eliminating its insulating capability. Many manufacturers have implemented different down treatments in order to combat this problem, with varying degrees of success. Down is also much more expensive than synthetic materials. However, the price of some down sleeping bags has been creeping lower over the years, putting them on par with a synthetic bag. Just remember that cheaper down sleeping bags typically sacrifice quality and features.

As you may have guessed, synthetic is the opposite of down. The cheaper price and greater resistance to water are the main draws to this insulation. But keep in mind that synthetic material is significantly heavier and much bulkier than down, making it a tough sell in the backpacking field. But synthetic sleeping bags definitely have a place amongst beginner hikers or those on a budget.

SIZING

It’s so easy to simply eyeball a sleeping bag online or in the store and think: ‘yup, that’s definitely big enough.’ Hold up, take a breath, and take a good look at the sizing chart!

Every single manufacturer has a slightly different sizing scheme for their sleeping bags. The common variables are height, shoulders, and hips; and they all fluctuate from bag to bag. We therefore highly recommend that you take the time to properly size yourself, and pick out a sleeping bag that’s guaranteed to fit you comfortably.

Or better yet, go to a gear store on a free afternoon and actually jump into the sleeping bag you’re thinking about. I know, it may seem weird climbing into a sleeping bag in the middle of a store, but there’s no better way to gauge the size.

WEIGHT

If you’re looking for a sleeping bag with hiking or backpacking in mind, then you’d be wise to consider the bag’s weight. The heavier the sleeping bag, the more your overall pack weight. But the lighter your sleeping bag, the less space and insulation you have. So consider your priorities, and choose accordingly.

Remember, down is typically much lighter than synthetic materials, and will likely be your insulation of choice if weight is a concern. Ultralight sleeping bags will typically fall in the 1-2lbs range, whereas mid-range options will be 2-3lbs. Anything heavier than 3lbs may be a little hefty for weight conscience hikers and merit reconsideration.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DOWN FILL POWER

Every single down sleeping bag on our list is accompanied by a fill-power number, ranging from 600 to 900. The exact definition is that the fill power number represents the number of cubic inches that one ounce of the down type takes up. But what does that mean for your warmth?

The higher that number, the greater the down’s insulating power. But the story doesn’t quite end there. Your warmth is also dependent on the sleeping bag’s fill weight, or simply the measurement of how much down the manufacturer stuffs in. This value is oftentimes listed, but sometimes not, so take note if it’s there! Outside Magazine has published a very informative article on all things down with more specific information if you wish.

TEMPERATURE RATING

All the sleeping bags on our list are rated to 20 degrees – with the sole exception of the Sea To Summit Flame whose 25 degree rating is balanced by a 14 degree EN rating. The majority of sleeping also have their manufacturer’s rating plus an EN value. But why are there two ratings in the first place, and what do they mean?

First of all, understand this: The published temperature rating without an EN designation is simply the manufacturer’s estimate of the temperature at which the bag will keep you warm, and has not been independently tested. These estimates are therefore highly subjective and are hard to gauge as everyone has different levels of warm comfort.

Enter EN 13537. This is a European testing standard that was introduced to level the playing field and ensure that sleeping bags are comparable. Many – but not all – sleeping bags will therefore feature an EN Comfort Rating and an EN Lower Limit Rating. The comfort rating refers to the tested temperature at which a cold sleeper will stay comfortable – usually found on women’s sleeping bags. The Lower Limit rating refers to the temperature at which a warm sleeper will stay comfortable – usually assigned to men’s sleeping bags.

The manufacturer’s rating will typically plop right in-between the EN comfort and limit ratings, but not always. So if the manufacturer has published EN ratings, take a look and make the most informed decision possible. Take a look at this article from REI for more temperature rating information.

COMPRESSED VOLUME

This value – measured in liters – refers to the volume of your sleeping bag when it’s compressed as much as possible. Some sleeping bags come with their own compression sacks for achieving this ‘packed’ volume, while others require you to purchase this separately.

The smaller this value, the less space the sleeping bag is going to take up in your bag. Down once again jumps to the head of the pack in this herd as it features superior compressibility when compared to synthetic insulation.

Its greatest threat is deep snow as these boots are lower than most other options. Any snow over the top of the boots will seep in and soak the interior, which is definitely something to be avoided! The insulation itself also follows the midrange trend. Salomon has implemented AeroGel as the primary insulator. This is a thin silica based gel – first implemented by NASA – that’s 90% air. As such, it is an excellent insulator and should keep your feet comfortable in temperatures down to -40F! 

The rest of the boot follows Salomon’s usual penchant for durability and waterproofing. Utilizing their own tried and true waterproofing scheme (CSWP) and a tacky Contragrip sole, these boots are sure to provide traction in all scenarios. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Toundra Pro has a hefty price tag that may make most buyers think twice. We also wish that at such a high price we’d have a few more color options.  But in terms of warmth-to-weight, the Toundra is definitely among the best winter hiking boots you can buy.

The waterproofing is also top-notch with a 600D nylon upper and rubber soles. The Greenbay does sacrifice a little comfort and fit for price, however. The fit is typically very loose and uses a simple drawcord and velcro cinch for securing. This makes the boot a little clunky for hiking, but it still gets the job done on shorter excursions. 

Overall, we’re very impressed by how warm and durable the Greenbay is for the price. The traction is also adequate for most applications. All these factors combine to make this boot an obvious addition to the best winter hiking boots for budget conscience adventurers.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING WINTER HIKING BOOTS

EXPECTED ACTIVITY

Some boots are designed for style, some for function, and others a blend of the two. So look closely at what you want your winter hiking boots for, and plan accordingly. Are you planning on going for occasional strolls through a nearby park, or heading off into those frosted forests for several hours? Just an icy coating on the ground? Or several feet of snow?

Your answers to these questions should narrow down your list of potential boots significantly. Mostly urban hiking in minimal snow would be the ideal application for shorter, stylish, boots without all the bells and whistles of extreme insulation and bomb-proof designs. But, on the other hand, if you know you’ll be tackling the backcountry snow drifts, then those higher and warmer boots may be just what you need.

A quick word on boot height. The shaft height measurement refers to the overall vertical boot height. If you step into snow that’s deeper than your boot height, snow will likely find its way into the top of your boot and soak the inside. Therefore make sure you get boots of appropriate height, or consider investing in some gaiters.

SIZING

We cannot overemphasize the importance of properly sized winter hiking boots! Too big and your feet will be sliding every which way, paving the road for blisters. But too tight and you won’t be able to tell if your toes are going numb from the cold or pinching.

Therefore, take the time to ensure you’re properly sized and fitted for your boots. Here are a couple tips to help you on the way: First, always wear your thick winter hiking socks when getting sized and trying on boots. You’ll be amazed by how much this influences your comfort and size choice.

Second, hold off sizing and trying on boots until the afternoon or evening if possible. Your feet swell throughout the day and you therefore want to size them at their largest point.

WEIGHT

Winter boots can be hefty. You’ll notice all the items on our list have their individual boot weight listed, and a couple are pushing two pounds for a single boot! Now add hiking to the mix, and we have a recipe for tired legs.

This is less of a concern if you’re planning on short park hikes or sticking to cleared trails. But if the snow’s deep and the trail long, then you’ll start to feel those heavier boots in no time. We therefore recommend that you keep an eye on your perspective boot’s weight, and consider if it will be holding you back or not.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

INSULATION

Insulation for winter hiking boots is the butter to bread, the jam to peanut butter, and the hot to chocolate. In other words, it’s important! It’s literally what transforms a hiking boot into a winter hiking boot, and keeps your feet warm in those chilly conditions.

The exact amount and type of insulation varies greatly from boot to boot. Two of the current favorites that you’ll encounter are Thinsulate and PrimaLoft. Both are synthetic materials and focus on adding excellent warmth retention without bulk. They are currently used by top manufacturing companies such as Sorel and The North Face, and have a proven track record.

But a second item to consider is weight. Some boots include 200 grams of insulation where others bump it to 400g. Generally speaking, the more insulation, the warmer the boot will be. The only glaring exception to this rule is Salomon, which uses lightweight yet very insulating AeroGel in their products. Eastern Mountain Sports has prepared an excellent list of the most common types of insulation on the market if you’re looking for more information.

WATERPROOFING

Equally important to keeping your feet warm is keeping them dry. Any amount of slush or snowmelt reaching your feet will push a hike into misery faster than Frosty sliding down a black diamond.

Just like insulation, however, most manufacturers employ their own proprietary waterproofing materials or membranes. These are generally sandwiched between the outer and inner layers of your boots and work in tandem with treated outer materials to prevent water intrusion.

These exterior material treatments, however, often need a little care to make sure water doesn’t soak in. REI has produced an excellent guide to waterproofing hiking boots for just this reason.

OUTSOLE MATERIAL

Your boot’s outsole is the layer of material in direct contact with the ground. Or, in the case of winter hiking, the part of the boot that keeps you from skidding on ice, slush, or thick snow. The best winter hiking boots will therefore put a special effort into designing an outsole that remains grippy in all conditions and surfaces. The lug pattern (the indentations on the sole) should furthermore provide good traction in snow and slush.

The exact material varies throughout the boot industry. Vibram, however, is very common and generally performs very well. Many other materials are proprietary to the manufacturer, but we still recommend conducting a little background research to make sure it’s suitable for winter conditions.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING DOWN VESTS

INSULATION AND FILL POWER

The fill power number is the primary indicator you have for a down garment’s insulating ability, but what exactly does the number mean? That number, generally anywhere from 500 to 900, is the number of cubic inches of loft that a single ounce of that particular down occupies.

VEST CUT – TRIM VS. BOXY

The thought of a down vest likely brings an image of those huge puffy garments that are delightfully reminiscent of the pillsbury dough-boy. These classic vests are indeed very warm and have terrific insulation, but are just too boxy and bulky to be practical when climbing, mountaineering, hiking, or completing any outdoor adventure activity. That’s why boxy vests are best suited for wearing around town, or short day hikes in cold weather.

But these days, the boxy cut isn’t your only option anymore. More and more outdoor gear manufacturers are shifting to a much more athletic cut down vest that has a significantly slimmer profile than their boxy brothers. These vests are your ideal layering option to wear under a coat, or stand alone in only slightly cool weather.

Therefore consider why you need a down vest, and pick out the best style from there based on your own personal preference. If you’re an avid outdoor adventurer who needs minimal bulk but significant insulation, opt for an athletic (or trim) cut vest designed for winter escapades. If, on the other hand, you need a cozy vest to wear around town, then the more puffy/boxy version may be for you.

BUDGET

The plethora of different styles and features associated with the best down vests unfortunately drives a wide range of prices. Premium down vests that are designed for maximum warmth retention and durability for high-intensity activities are often head-and-shoulders more expensive than their less fancy cousins.

Consider your intended use very carefully and plan your budget accordingly before deciding which vest is right for you. Spending $250 for a down vest designed for the mountains but only using it to drive to and from work is a cringe worthy waste of your hard-earned money. There are plenty of very warm and functional vests available at very accessible prices. But if you are planning to put your down vest through the wringer, then by all means go for the best.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

MATERIAL DURABILITY

The outer shell of the vast majority of down vests is either nylon or polyester. These lightweight materials easily keep the down where it should be, and resist general use wear and tear. This material’s thickness is measured in deniers and the larger the number, the thicker the material – i.e. a 20D nylon is thinner than a 40D. Thick materials typically indicate increased durability, along with increased weight.

However, if you’re taking your new down vest climbing, or up into the mountains, or on a hiking trip, then a heavier but more resilient material may well be worth the extra cost and added bulk. But regardless of the thickness, a nick or tear or dirty smear is almost inevitable. Check out Backcountry’s advice on how to properly care for your vest in order to keep it in tip-top shape.

WEATHERPROOFING

Almost all adventurers agree that down’s achilles heel is moisture. Down works so well by trapping air inside the garment, and therefore creating a warm buffer between you and the elements. But if the down was to get wet it would collapse and clump up, and therefore remove your warm air pockets.

Many of the best down vests therefore feature some level of weather resistance in order to keep the rain and snow at bay. This most often takes form as a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish that will add at least some water resistance to the outer material. It’s important to note that this DWR finish may need a boost from time to time, and REI has excellent advice on how to care for and reapply this DWR coating.

PACKABILITY

One of the many benefits of down is that it squishes down very easily for transport, and then pops back up without losing any of it’s fluffy insulating characteristics. Many manufacturers will therefore include a stuff sack with their down vest for you to pack it down into. This is a very handy feature to look out for, and definitely makes it easy to stash your down vest in a bag for a day out in the elements.

Lacking this stuff sack, many down vests can simply be packed into one of their own pockets until you need it!

The DWR treatment is also fairly effective in shedding water if you happen to get caught in a mist or drizzle. But when the sun comes out, the UPF 50 protection will give you a little cover. While we love the stretchiness of these pants, it’s worth pointing out that Eddie Bauer’s sewing scheme or thread material isn’t well suited for extreme movement. Over several months and years, the thread holding the pockets together will often begin to fail, and this appears to be a universal problem for all Guide Pro wearers.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING CLIMBING PANTS

WEATHERPROOFING

Have some epic outdoor climbing adventures in mind? Then you should also consider investing in some climbing pants that feature a little weatherproofing! You just never know when some mist, or drizzle, or other inclement weather will roll in, especially if you’re eyeing an alpine climb.

The front line of defense in this department are climbing pants with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish. This will help water bead up and run off rather than soak into your pants, and can be a lifesaver in rough weather. Remember that a DWR finish can slowly degrade over time with multiple uses and washes, however. Another item to consider, more so for you alpine climbers, is some form of wind-resistance built into your climbing pants. This will help keep you nice and warm during your adventure by locking out that windchill.

COMFORT AND MATERIAL

Spending hours or days in your favorite rock climbing pants is not to be taken lightly. You need a pair that is functional for what you’ll be climbing, will hold up to the rigors of your adventure, and most importantly, is comfortable to wear!

You’ll find a plethora of different material blends out there on the market, which are broken down here to make it easy to choose. In general, however, you’ll be looking for something that incorporates some stretch in order to move with you on the wall and stay comfortable through every route. This stretchiness is most often accomplished by blending with ether spandex, lycra, or elastane.

CUFF SECURING

I’m certainly amongst the ‘I can’t climb with my pant leg touching my ankles’ crew. Luckily for us, many of the best climbing pants out there include snaps or buttons on the pant cuff to secure them above the ankle for all your climbing adventures. Occasionally we’ll also see a design that includes these snaps midway up the calf so you can secure your pants even higher.

Whether you want this luxury or not comes down to your own personal preference. The absence of these snaps doesn’t exclude you from just rolling up your pant legs to your desired length, of course. But the added security of the snaps to make sure those cuffs don’t roll down mid-climb is always beneficial!

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ARTICULATED DESIGNS

The best climbing pants will often incorporate some type of knee articulation into their designs in order to improve mobility. This involves adding extra material and adopting a sewing scheme that moves with – instead of restricts – knee movement.

Gentlemen, climbing pants designed for us will also go one step further and include a gusseted crotch. This design includes more material sewn into that region that, anatomically speaking, makes pulling off tough moves on the crag much more comfortable.

Nothing’s worse than scoping out your next move, swinging your leg out, and then hitting the cutoff point for your pants’ mobility. But, both of these features will help prevent that from happening and keep you at peak climbing performance!

BAGGY VS. ATHLETIC CUT

Some folks love baggy climbing pants for their freedom, mobility, and comfort. Other climbers, however, prefer a more athletic – or tighter – pant that’s low profile and stretchy enough to provide the mobility you need. Both pant types can work perfectly for climbing, and the decision will ultimately come down to your own personal preference.

For reference, we tend to suggest that the baggy versions are most suitable for bouldering or gym climbing. But once you’re out there on some technical or multi-pitch climbs, it’s better to adopt more technical/athletic pants as these won’t brush against the rock as much and are traditionally more durable than their baggy counterparts.

CHALK BAG LOOP AND BRUSH POCKET

When you have a pair of pants designed by climbers for climbers, you will often find an integrated chalk bag loop. This is simply a loop on the back of the pants for you to clip your chalk bag to for easy access. We find this feature most beneficial for bouldering when you don’t want to be lumbered with strapping into your full-on climbing harness – which will likely have a chalk bag loop too.

The brush pocket is just what it sounds like. Not to give your teeth a polish mid-climb, but to scrape any accumulated chalk off holds before you make your move. Once again, this is most beneficial for bouldering, but can also be handy if you’re cleaning a route outside on the crag.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A CLIMBING HARNESS

DURABILITY

Buying a shiny new climbing harness only to see it deteriorate and become a safety hazard is about as disappointing as dropping your favorite carabiner off a cliff. The best climbing harnesses will therefore use high-quality materials and construction methods to ensure their products retain optimum strength for as long as possible.

FIT AND COMFORT

Like wetsuits to a diver and running shoes to a runner, we climbers tend to spend a lot of time in our harnesses. To make that as pleasant an experience as possible, please ensure that you purchase a harness that properly fits you!

WEIGHT

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A CLIMBING ROPE

LENGTH

The last thing any of us want is for you to reach the end of your rope while climbing, in every sense of the phrase! So, it’s beneficial to consider the height of the routes that you have in mind for your new rope – and don’t forget to double that height, as you’ll need the rope to get to the top of the route and back down to your belay buddy!

In general, for all of you beginners that are just starting out, we think a 60m or 70m rope is an excellent choice. These standard rope lengths will give you plenty of rope for the vast majority of routes that you’ll be tackling both in the gym and outside.

STRENGTH

We all know that we want our ropes to be strong, but we’re sure you’re wondering, how is that measured? The answer is provided by the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (UIAA), an international organization dedicated to rope standardization and safety standards.

The UIAA has created a series of tests and certifications to rate your rope’s strength, which will always be displayed with the rope’s basic information- whether you are looking in the store or online. You’ll see something along the lines of: ‘rated to 6 UIAA falls’, or ‘8 UIAA falls’, or whatever number is determined through intensive testing. This number refers to the number or falls – or times the rope catches your full body weight – before it’s time to consider retirement.

With this in mind, we would like to remind you that no two falls are the same, conditions vary, and it’s always pivotal to check your rope for damage and degradation before and after climbing. Run an eye over REI’s advice in this department to make sure your rope is always up to par.

BI-PATTERN AND MIDDLE MARK

As stated earlier, it’s absolutely pivotal that your rope is at least twice as long as the route you’re planning to climb. This will allow you to be lowered to the ground while still remaining connected to your belay buddy. Because of this, while you’re in the process of crushing your route, you do not want to use more than half of your total rope length.

To this end – or middle in our case – we have the bi-pattern rope. These ropes have one pattern for the first half of their length, and a different pattern for the other half. This allows for a quick determination of how much rope you still have to play with before reaching the middle. Other rope designs will opt for a middle mark, which is simply a mark or different colored section directly in the middle of the rope to serve the same purpose.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DIAMETER

This is simply the diameter of your climbing rope, measured in millimeters. The general trend in the rope community is that the thicker your rope, the more strength and abrasion resistance it has.

Ropes that fall in the 9.5-10.0mm range are typically great all-around purpose ropes that can be used for all the different types of routes and climbs that you’ll be jumping on as a beginner. Anything thicker will be very beefy and secure, best for gym climbing and heavy duty use. Anything thinner will be extra light and great for multi-pitch – climbing several rope lengths up a face – and alpine climbing.

WEIGHT

Usually represented as grams per meter, this is the overall weight of the rope, which is very dependent on the rope’s diameter. While thicker and heavier ropes can provide more strength and support, remember that the heavier the rope, the tougher it will be to get it to hard-to-reach crags!

DRY TREATMENT

In their natural, untreated, form, climbing ropes can absorb water when the rain starts to fall. Once this water is soaked into the fibers, the rope’s strength can be decreased (not to mention the rope’s weight can be painfully increased). For this reason, we believe that the best climbing ropes for beginners should include a dry treatment.

This treatment essentially adds a shield to the rope, preventing water intrusion while also increasing its durability and abrasion resistance. Of course, dry treated or not, all climbing ropes still get dirty over time and occasionally need a little maintenance.
