BEST PREMIUM-QUALITY SNOWBOARDING ACTION CAMERA

If you’re looking for a camera that excels at taking both photos and videos all while being packed into a compact, rugged, take-me-anywhere-and-everywhere design, then GoPro’s latest offering will be your godsend: the Hero8 Black.

Able to shoot stunning Ultra High Definition video (4K at 60 frames per second), you’ll be able to capture ultra high-resolution video and smooth, buttery action footage without having to worry about the details. You’ll also be able to seamlessly switch between 4 “digital lenses”, giving you the freedom to capture both “normal” looking video (without the warp-y, fisheye look) as well as super wide angle (270° degree field of view) shots from the top of the mountain that’s like taking a really cool panorama on your smartphone, only better!

Also packed into this little beast is an intuitive 2” touch-screen that you can playback footage on, a removable battery that can be replaced with a backup to keep you on the mountain longer, and voice controlled camera activation for hands free simplicity. But perhaps coolest of all is the new HyperSmooth 2.0, which reduces shakiness and nauseating video from intense action footage.

Downsides? None. We’re still scratching our heads as to how GoPro is going to top this one in the future.

GoPro MAX

GoPro MAX

BEST VLOGGING SNOWBOARDING ACTION CAMERA

If you like to vlog your snowboarding adventures in order to capture both yourself and what you’re experiencing, then the GoPro MAX will make your life much, much easier.

Sporting not just 1, but 2 cameras, the MAX is able to capture both front and rear facing video footage simultaneously. We know: mind = blown. Not only that, the footage you capture isn’t just two seperate feeds, but rather is stitched together in real-time to create a 360° field of view that includes both camera feeds in a single frame. I swear it’s magic.

This takes personal (and professional) vlogging to a whole new level. The immersive 360° video is also perfect when hitting the terrain park, letting viewers see both the obstacle to be shredded and yourself as you nail the stunt.

Of course, you can also switch back to “Hero” mode and record normally (i.e. not in 360° mode – this can be with either front or rear facing camera) if you are so inclined and have a specific vision for a shot.

Perhaps where this camera gets a little tricky is in the photo department. If you want to take “Hero” style (i.e. normal – not 360° spherical looking shots) photos, you’ll be relying on 1 of the 2 cameras and will have only a 5.5 megapixel capability which is underwhelming, to say the least.

However, if you double up the cameras and capture an “immersive 360° photo” (think phone camera panorama to the max), you’ll have a whopping 16.6 megapixels at your disposal. While that is indeed impressive, not everyone wants or needs 360° photos, making this a less than ideal “photo” camera.

In sum: The MAX has revolutionary video capabilities for action sports like snowboarding and will take “pretty good” normal photos.

Olympus TG-6 Waterproof

Specs
  • Type: Point-and-Shoot
  • Best For: Photo
  • Weight: 2.12 oz.
  • Waterproof?: Yes (up to 50 ft./15 m.)
  • Photo: 12 Megapixels
  • Video: Ultra High Definition (4K at 30 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: No
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • Dual-Pane, Sealed Lens Is Fog-Proof And Prevents Condensation
  • Countless Accessories Allow You To Expand What This Camera Is Capable Of
  • Complete Weatherproof Construction Guards Against Water, Snow, Dust, & Impacts

BEST RUGGED POINT-AND-SHOOT

If you’re looking for a more traditional style camera that has most of the capabilities of a GoPro, then the TG-6 Waterproof by Olympus should be on your list of options.

When it comes to rugged adventures, the TG-6 stacks up well. It’s actually more waterproof than a GoPro, able to be submerged almost 20 feet deeper than the Hero8 Black. It’s also dustproof, freezeproof, shockproof, crushproof, snowproof, and has a 3” rear display (1” larger than a GoPro display).

It has a 12 megapixel camera that matches the Hero8 Black, but will ultimately capture better photos thanks to a high-speed sensor absent from GoPros. Pair that with the ability to manipulate settings and amateur photographers will be able to create stunning visuals from the top of the mountain.

Overall, the TG-6 will beat out a GoPro in the photography department in the hands of someone with a little photo know-how. Its video capabilities are just dandy, but could be better.

Note: This is the only camera listed here that does not include BlueTooth capabilities.

GoPro HERO7 Black

Specs
  • Type: Action Cam
  • Best For: Photo & Video
  • Weight: 4.1 oz.
  • Waterproof?: Yes (up to 33 ft./10 m.)
  • Photo: 12 Megapixels
  • Video: Ultra High Definition (4K at 60 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: 8x
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • 3 Digital Lens Can Capture A Variety of Photos And Videos
  • Hands-Free Voice Activation Makes Using The Camera A Breeze
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) Technology Intelligently Improves Photos In Real-Time

BEST BUDGET PICK

If you’re wanting a top-notch GoPro without paying top-dollar money, you can save some coin by grabbing the previous iteration: the GoPro Hero7 Black.

The Hero7 Black has many of the same features as the newest GoPro model (the Hero8 Black), offering 12 megapixel photos, 4K video capture at 60 frames per second (fps), a 2” touchscreen for playing back footage, slow motion up to 8x, and HyperSmooth video stabilization that will make your snowboarding footage buttery smooth.

The Hero7 Black also has 3 digital lenses (doesn’t include the narrow lens on the Hero8 Black), captures RAW photos that can be edited using post-production editing software, and includes voice-activated features for hands free capabilities.

However, the live streaming option is only available in 720p (p refers to pixel count), which although is technically HD, it is noticeably low-quality compared to a stunning 1080p video (which has 50% more pixels, meaning a sharper image!). Also absent is the Night Lapse shooting option (available on Hero8 Black) which allows you to take time-lapse photos and videos in low light (i.e. night time).

At the end of the day, the Hero7 Black is nearly identical to the Hero8 Black and if the aforementioned differences don’t bother you, then the Hero7 Black will actually be a better investment for you since it comes at a lower price point.

Canon PowerShot G9X Mark II

Specs
  • Type: Point-and-Shoot
  • Best For: Photo
  • Weight: 7.2 oz.
  • Waterproof?: No
  • Photo: 20.1 Megapixels
  • Video: Full High Definition (1080p at 60 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: No
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • Available In 2 Colors
  • Has Bluetooth For Easy Photo Sharing With Friends And Family
  • Takes Amazing Photos In Low-Light And Motion Heavy Scenarios

BEST PREMIUM QUALITY POINT-AND-SHOOT

If you have a little bit of camera know-how and want to take the highest quality photos to document your snowboarding vacation, then the PowerShot G9X Mark II from Canon will be your best bet.

Sporting the best photo resolution in this list, the PowerShot boasts a whopping 20.1 megapixel camera and has a high-speed sensor that intelligently manipulates the elements to produce the highest quality photos. In order to make the most of these features, you’ll need a little knowledge when it comes to adjusting ISO, aperture, and shutter speed (see Things to Consider section below for more info about these terms).

Speaking of ISO, this camera has the broadest range of all the cameras listed here, going as low as 125 and as high as 12,800. ISO determines how much light a camera’s sensor is receiving – the lower the lightsource, the higher the ISO needs to be. This translates into a greater ability to capture low-light images such as family photos on the mountain during sunset.

The PowerShot also features an image processor that makes action shots crisper and cleaner, reducing the chance for blurry photos. And it has a 3” inch touchscreen that can be used to review photos after they’re taken.

To conclude, the PowerShot will take the best photos hands down but is certainly the most vulnerable camera when snowboarding. Even tucked away in a backpack, it risks damage in the event of a fall. If you want to take videos or you need a rugged camera that will stand up to drops and falls, look elsewhere.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CAMERA FOR SNOWBOARDING

PHOTO & VIDEO RESOLUTION

When buying a camera, differences that can be deal breakers and decision makers rest on what you will primarily be using the camera for: photo or video? While many cameras are able to do both really well, most cameras lean one way or another. The resolution of the photos and videos being captured is extremely important to understand.

Photo

While there are plenty of “in-camera” technical aspects that can be manipulated by a photographer to take a great photo, there is one fundamental metric that helps us compare between two cameras: megapixels (MP).

Simply put, the more megapixels a camera has, the better quality the photos will be.

Video

Video is a little more nuanced but we’ll keep it brief and simple. There are two things to keep an eye on when looking at video specs: resolution and frame rate.

  • Resolution

Terms such as “1080p” and “4K” are very common when shooting video. What these numbers refer to are the number of pixels being captured in a given space (similar to megapixels for photos). 1080p means that there are more than 1,000 pixels in a single horizontal row whereas 4K has almost 4,000, making it 4 times better than the 1080p option. 1440p is another resolution that is a small step up from 1080p, but not nearly as high-quality as 4K.

Put simply, the higher the number, the better the video quality!

video resolution

  • Frame Rate

Frame rate refers to frames per second (fps), or the number of pictures taken in a single second. The two most common frame rates are 60fps and 30fps. The more frames you can pack into a single second of video, the smoother the video will appear. Therefore, 60fps is preferred for action shots or any video with a lot of motion being captured.

  • Putting It Together

So, what’s better? Video shot in 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60 fps?

It depends on what you’re capturing! If you’re panning slowly across mountain top vista and want to display the beauty of the environment, then you’ll want to focus on that 4K resolution. However, if you’re snagging action footage of your friend snowboarding, you’ll want to focus on the higher frame rate.

4K 30fps = Higher resolution

1080p 60fps = Smoother video

This is a pretty typical option you’ll be faced with if the camera you choose has a maximum of 4K at 30fps as you can typically bump the resolution down while increasing the frame rate.

However, if you’d rather avoid this decision and want the highest quality everything, then make sure the camera you buy can shoot 4K at 60fps. Keep in mind that this also comes with an increase in price.

RAW PHOTOS

This applies if you plan to edit your photos in Adobe Lightroom or Aperture (by Apple). RAW is a file format that holds a lot more information than a standard JPEG image format and can be manipulated much easier. However, once you are done editing, your photos will need to be exported back into a JPEG format.

If you prefer a simpler approach and won’t be editing your photos after shooting, then having a camera that shoots in RAW isn’t necessary.

WIFI & BLUETOOTH

The WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities on a camera can vary and aren’t to be treated the same. Generally speaking, WiFi is the stronger and more useful option over BlueTooth, as it can be used to livestream, transfer data, playback video, and control the camera remotely.

Bluetooth is a lower power consumption option with limited capabilities. In the instance of a GoPro, the Bluetooth is used to “wake up” a camera from sleep mode.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Aperture

Aperture measures the depth of field in a photo being taken. It also allows more light to be let into the camera (similar to the way your pupil works).

Shutter Speed

This is a measure of how quickly a photo is taken in seconds. The faster the shutter speed (1/1,000th of a second), the less opportunity for blur to distort the photo. The longer/slower the shutter speed (5 seconds, 30 seconds, etc.), the more light can be let in which is used in taking long-exposures of the night sky.

ISO

ISO is the last measure that can be manipulated when taking a photo. It influences how sensitive the camera’s sensor is to the available light. On a bright sunny day, the camera needs to be “less sensitive” and have a low ISO (i.e. 125) so your pictures don’t appear “blown out” or too bright. When it’s dusk and there’s much less light, the camera’s sensor needs to be “more sensitive” to the available light and have a higher ISO (i.e. 5000+) so that the picture doesn’t come out too dark.

HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a software technology that reads photos in real-time to improve their quality. It’s like a robot doing post-production photo editing in the blink of an eye.

Are you ready to nail that trick you were so close to sending last season? This is the year, and a new freestyle board may be the upgrade you need. Freestyle boards are much different than all-mountain or alpine boards. The best freestyle snowboards don’t tear up the slopes, but instead, shred up the park. Rails, jumps, and boxes are where the board performs best. Freestyle snowboards are much lighter than traditional boards. You’ll be able to flick your board around easier, which is nice when doing spins in the park. Your board won’t carve as well or travel as fast as the other types of boards, but you’ll never get bored on a freestyle board.

Disclaimer: Snowboarders are known (and made fun of) for their use of slang. It may be your first time hearing boards being described with terms like flex, sidecut, and rocker. If you’re confused, I recommend checking out the Features Explain section below! This section is meant to help you choose the right snowboard for your abilities.

For this reason, many skateboarders going from pavement to snow love this board.

Salomon Gypsy

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT SNOWBOARD

The construction of this snowboard features two things that most snowboards don’t have. The first is a carbon layer. This makes the board stiffer than others, which allows for you to jump easier. The combination of both of these things makes the board great for freestyle snowboarders.

This makes the board easier to twist in the air!

Capita Birds of a Feather

It has thicker external walls, which will keep your board protected if you find rocks or tough chunks of ice. The core of the snowboard is also powerful, which will keep the board stable at high speeds.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FREESTYLE SNOWBOARD

Snowboards are some of the most diverse things on the slope. Every board is different and everyone has their own preferences. That being said, park riders love boards that do one thing well — pop. Weight, camber, rocker, core, and sidecut radius differentiate from board to board, and there isn’t one combination that is proven best. If you really want to know what works best for you, demo boards before you buy one. The most serious of riders need a board that lasts season after season but also fits their style best. Before you spend more than $400 on a board, try it out!

FLEX

Flex is how easily your board will bend. This directly relates to how much control you will have over your board on the ground and in the air.

SOFT: More forgiving, but requires much more strength to navigate and toss around. Better for beginners

MEDIUM: A nice middle-ground, which most freestyle riders prefer. There is a balance between forgiveness and maneuverability.

STIFF: The most difficult boards to ride. Beginners will feel out of control, but masters will love the micro-control they will have.

ROCKER / CAMBER PROFILE

In order to understand how your board’s profile will affect it’s riding ability, you need to understand what camber, rocker, and flat profiles mean. Warning, there are many different types and combinations, but the ones explained below are the most important for freestyle riding.

FLAT: Just like it sounds! There is no arc or curve in the board at all.

CAMBER: A very slight upward curve in the middle of the board with contact points near the ends of the board.

ROCKER: Camber turned upside down, the board is shaped subtly like an arc.

CAMBER/ROCKER: This is where things get a bit confusing. Boards shaped like this look like a big W. The board cambers in the middle, allowing you to pop, but rocks near the tips, allowing for more control on turns, rails, and jibs.

FLAT/ROCKER: These boards are flat in the middle, but are a rocking shape near the edges, which allows for more control.

SIDECUT RADIUS

Snowboards have a very unique shape. It may appear that the front and back edge are curved and the middle of the board is straight. However, that is not the case. If you look carefully, you’ll see that snowboards actually have more of an arch-like shape. This shape is what allows for you to turn on the snow with control. In fact, each snowboard has a completely unique cut. The measurement of this cut is called the sidecut radius. If you imagine that a circle was drawn with the same circular shape of your board, the sidecut radius is the measurement of the radius in that circle. So what does this mean for you? Well, if you want to be a freestyle snowboarder, it is recommended to stick with a sidecut between 7 to 8 meters.

A smaller sidecut radius will allow you to make much sharper turns. Snowboarders who go back and forth on the slopes quicker, in a slalom like way, tend to look for the smallest sidecut possible. A longer sidecut radius will not allow for you to turn as sharply, but will give you more stability at high speeds. If you plan to go down steeper slopes, or consider yourself an intermediate snowboarder, this may be for you. Snowboards that have a sidecut longer than 8 meters are regarded as “big mountain” because they are used by experts in extreme environments.

SHAPE

Snowboards come in 2 different shapes. The traditional shape is like a skateboard. Snowboarders refer to this as “true twin”. The other type of snowboard shape resembles more of a surfboard. This allows for a board to float more in deep snow.

Most freestyle boards are true twin shaped. Why? Well first and foremost, freestyle riders like to ride switch. “Riding switch” is when you ride in the opposite stance. So if you ride with your left foot forward, for example, riding switch would mean that your right foot would be in front. Freestyle snowboarders tend to ride switch often because they can do more tricks. Why? Well they will not have to lose speed switching back to their dominant stance after a landing. True twin shaped boards are also easier to twist. This means it will be easier to spin your board around and land 180s, 360s, and other spin tricks. Because true twin shaped boards allow you to ride switch without losing any performance. Directional boards may be better in powder or deep snow conditions, but true twin boards are preferred by freestyle snowboarders.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ABSORBENT BASE

Bases with absorbing technology will hold wax much better than those without. This means you won’t have to wax your board as often for it to perform at its best.

DIRECTIONAL-SHAPED BOARDS

Directional boards are best for beginners. Why? Beginners typically avoid learning how to ride switch until they have a season or two under their belt. So if you are just getting the hang of going down the slopes, get yourself a directional board for more control.

MOUNTAIN CORE FOR IMPROVED TORSIONAL RESPONSE

Boards that boast torsional response are for freestyle riders who love to spin. These boards respond to spin really well, making your board easier to flip around.

SQUEEZEBOX

Boards with this technology feature a unique core that gives more pop than other cores. It also tends to be a bit heavier. Snowboarders that hit large gaps should take advantage of boards with this technology.

ULTIMATE RIDE TECHNOLOGY

Burton boards boast this technology, which actually happens to be really useful. Burton overbuilds their boards and then puts them in a machine to break them in. Other boards take a few months to really break-in, but your Burton will be ready on the first day.

ULTRALIGHT CORE

Every snowboard boasts a unique core, however, there is no proven front-runner in terms of wood. Freestyle boards try and stay as light as possible, which is why the core is always boasted. Instead of focusing on the core material, compare the weights of your desired board length.

WIDE SIZE AVAILABLE

If you have really large feet (think size 12), consider buying a wide snowboard. This will prevent your heels and toes from dragging on the snow. Be careful though! Wide snowboards are also much more difficult to control.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD BACKPACK

Buying a backpack may seem relatively straight forward, but to make sure you’re buying the best one for you, we recommend reading through a few of these key points to consider. If you’re hungry for some more information as well, read through this article about how to choose a backpack by Evo.

GENDER

First and foremost, make sure you’re buying the right gender bag. Nowadays bags are specified for both women and men, so before choosing yours, make sure it fits your gender.

CAPACITY

After gender, capacity is the most important feature to consider. Here, you need to gauge exactly what you’re looking for. If it’s a day pack, stick to the 12L and 16L sizes. If it’s a backcountry day pack, bump up to the 20L and 32L sizes. And if it’s overnighter, anything over 40L should be a good fit.

CARRYING STYLE

If you read through the bag descriptions carefully, you’ll notice they note how your skis or snowboard will attach. Not all bags attach boards and skis in the same way. Some sport a vertical carry, which means your bag will stand up and down as you hike, whereas others are horizontal. Whatever the carry may be, ask around to make sure it suits your style and environment. For example, you may want a vertical carry bag for hiking on narrow trails.

COST

A good bag will cost you a pretty penny, but most riders can make do with any bag. However, if you’re looking to attempt some seriously difficult or avalanche-prone terrain, please, spend the extra money. When your life is on the line, you don’t want to be worrying about a flimsy bag as well.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DIAGONAL CARRY

This carrying style is typically designed for carrying skis as they will attach to your bag in a diagonal or A-frame style carry, which is more ergonomic and comfortable.

AVY COMPATIBLE

Straps on the inside or outside of your bag will really lock your board or boards into place. If not secured, boardsIf you ever see the word Avy, the company is referring to avalanche equipment. Not all bags come equipped with avalanche compatible equipment, whether that is space for a beacon and probe, or an airbag. If you’re planning on spending any time boarding in the backcountry, make sure to look for a bag that is compatible with avalanche equipment.

FRAME

If you ever see the term “frame” while comparing different bags, it refers to the structure of the backpack. Some bags have frameless structures, others are built with an internal or external frame. Internal frame packs are usually the most comfortable and popular for day hikes and overnight trips. Frameless bags are lighter weight and can be useful for short day treks. External frame packs are not very common these days, but they are most appropriate for multi-day trips into the backcountry.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD GOGGLES

COST

As with all outdoor gear, you have to find the best balance for you between performance and economy. Goggles are, however, one of the most important pieces of snowboard equipment because they allow you to see and enjoy the slopes in any weather condition. All goggles will offer some protection from wind and cold, but it’s important to find a pair that fits you well and that is optimized for the type of conditions that you normally enjoy.

FIT

It is really important that your goggles fit your face well. They should feel snug but not tight, and they should fit nicely between your forehead and nose such that there isn’t a gap between your helmet and goggles. Some designs are made specifically for small or large faces, so you should be aware of these differences as you’re deciding. For more information about fit, check out REI’s Expert Advice column on choosing the best snowboard goggles for you.

HELMET COMPATIBILITY

Almost all goggles are compatible with helmets these days; after all, most snowboarders are wearing helmets for safety and warmth. Some companies make both helmets and goggles and design them as a system so that they fit flush against one another across your forehead. If you’re trying on goggles in a store, you should definitely try them on with a helmet to make sure that they fit comfortably on your face when paired with a snowboard helmet. The straps around the goggles can be adjusted for different circumferences so if you find yourself on the hill without a helmet on a particularly leisurely, warm spring day, then you can reduce the size of the goggles to fit your head.

LENSES

Goggle lenses come in all colors of the rainbow. Some are mirrored, some are polarized, some even have digital displays that pair with GPS or Bluetooth technology. The most important thing is to wear the right lenses for the right conditions. If it’s snowy, then you’ll want to choose a lighter lens (higher visual light transmission), and if it’s bright and sunny outside, a darker lens will help you see better (lower visual light transmission). There are lenses that fall in the middle of the spectrum that can be used in all weather conditions, but if you’re just learning to snowboard and just getting to know the slopes, it may be worth choosing snowboard goggles with multiple lenses to help you see perfectly in all conditions.

GLASSES & PRESCRIPTIONS

If you wear prescription eyewear, there are goggles that are compatible with eyeglasses. The design is typically referred to as OTG, or “over the glass” styles. They have space to accommodate your glasses while avoiding undue pressure on your temples and nose.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CYLINDRICAL LENSES

Cylindrical lenses curve from left to right across your face but remain flat vertically, between your nose and forehead. Cylindrical lenses offer good performance at a lower price point.

SPHERICAL LENSES

Spherical lenses curve both horizontally and vertically across your face, giving the goggles a “bubble-like” look. Spherical lenses reduce glare, fogging, and distortion, and also increase your field of vision.

INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES

Many goggles come with two or more lenses that can be easily swapped by the wearer depending on light conditions.

VISUAL LIGHT TRANSMISSION (VLT)

This term refers to the amount of light that reaches your eye through your goggle lens. Lighter lens tints have a higher VLT because more light is allowed to pass through, while darker tints have lower VLT because less light gets through the lens to your eye. Darker tints are better for sunny days while lighter tints are better for cloudy or snowy days with less sunlight.

VENTILATION

Most goggles have some kind of built-in vents to mitigate the fog and condensation that results from your sweat and body heat meeting the cold winter air. A few high end goggles might also include built-in fans to help distribute the moisture.

GOGGLE FRAME

This term refers to the piece that holds the proper shape of the goggles. Most frames are made of a kind of polyurethane plastic because it has some give and flexibility. Generally, a more flexible frame is better for colder temperatures.

The right snowboarding boots can take your riding to the next level, especially if you plan to lap the park this upcoming season. Instead of spending money on a new board, a new pair of boots may be exactly what you need. Even the slightest gap between toe and boot can be uncomfortable and restricting. The best pair of freestyle snowboarding boots are typically soft and flexible, which makes riding more controlled.

Boots vary greatly from one pair to the next. Stiff boots will give you much more control, for example, while flexible boots are more comfortable and forgiving. Buying the best freestyle snowboard boots will make you a better snowboarder for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, you’ll simply want to spend more time on the mountain. Second, their light weight makes it easier to jump higher, twist faster, and butter deeper. If your boots aren’t ideal, you should consider buying a new pair this season instead of upgrading other parts of your gear. This article features the five best freestyle snowboard boots for the 2019/2020 season.

Vans technology promises to lock your foot into place from the beginning of the day until the end. If you usually find yourself with a new blister at the end of each day on the slopes, these boots may solve all your problems. The best part of these boots, though, is their swag. They look good and come in a few different color combinations. If you want to look fresh on the mountain, these boots will take your swag to the next level.

BEST FREESTYLE BOOTS FOR BEGINNERS

If you’re buying your first pair of snowboarding boots, the Head Rodeo boots may be exactly what you are looking for. These boots are more all-mountain boots because they are a bit stiffer than other boots on the list. These boots are unisex, which will give them much more life on the mountain. These boots don’t do anything exceptionally well, but they are an all-around performer. The fact that the boots are so simple in their style and fit makes them super easy to pass on to your friends. Finally, if you’re a beginner, you will love how simple these boots are. They slide on easily and will stay comfortable all day long. What more could you ask for?

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING FREESTYLE SNOWBOARDING BOOTS

FLEX

The way your boots flex correlates to responsiveness and comfort. Boots with a light amount of flex are harder to navigate than stiff boots, but they are much more forgiving on landings and twists. Freestyle boots typically feature a softer flex than all-mountain or freeriding boots.

LACING SYSTEM

The right laces will prevent your foot from blistering. Most boots in this article feature the Ratcheting Cable Lace, often referred to as the BOA Fit System. There are two different cables that attach to dials on your boots. These dials can be adjusted easily, which means you can keep your gloves on and adjust your boots.

LINER MATERIAL

Polyester and foam liners aren’t as warm or comfortable as UVA liners. That being said, they still perform well on the mountain.

MOLDABLE LINER

Moldable liner technology has really changed snowboarding boot comfort. Therformoldable liners use heat from your foot to mold around your foot after a few days on the mountain. Custom Moldable liners require a special machine to be molded around your foot. The machine can be found in most snowboarding shops.

SIZING

Fortunately for you, all of the boots in this article come in .5 sizes. If you buy online, check the return policy beforehand. Nothing is worse than having to wear three pairs of socks so your boots fit.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FIT-TO-RIDE FOR OUT OF THE BOX COMFORT

These boots will arrive already broken in. Paired with moldable liners, you’ll be ready to snowboard with maximum comfort right away.

HEEL CAGE

A heel cage will really lock your foot into place. This means fewer blisters and more maneuverability.

SNOWPROOF INTERNAL WATERPROOF PROTECTION

If you send lines harder than most, you may want boots with this feature. No matter how deep the pow is, your foot will remain dry.

Once you begin snowboarding with headphones, you won’t be able to go back. Riding down the slopes, wandering around the backcountry, and even just chilling on the lift are made much better with music or a podcast. Simple headphones can get you by, but they can be annoying and frustrating too. The microphone doesn’t work, or you have to pause your music everytime you want to talk to a friend. Or maybe your bluetooth headphones only last a few hours because the battery can’t withstand the cold. It’s important to purchase the best headphones for snowboarding that will meet all your listening needs.

There are many different types of headphones for snowboarding. Everyone has their preference, but the most serious snowboarders go with headphone chips. These are headphones that fit into your helmet ear pads. You may have never realized it, but there is a small pocket in your helmet where they will fit! If you need a pair of headphones that will work in the mountains, at your desk, and at the gym, you will want to go with a more functional pair of in-ear headphones. This article will help you make a more informed decision on what you should purchase. And if you’ve never tried headphones on the slope, well, give it a shot. This post will be waiting for you when you’re ready for an upgrade.

These headphones are definitely the safest, allowing you to hear if someone is on your left, or if your friends need to take a break. These headphones lose performance if played very loud. If you are looking for a more affordable Outdoor Lab Bluetooth product, get the 2.0s instead of the Ultras. These headphones may not have the audio quality as others on the list, but the battery will last a long time. Also, if your battery runs out, you can simply plugin with an audio cable to continue listening.

Each time you want to adjust the sound, you will need to take out your cell phone. If you are looking for a top-notch pair of headphones that you want to use every single day, the Jaybird Vistas are for you. Serious snowboarders should look elsewhere.

You can use them in your everyday life, at the gym, and on the slopes. Plus, JBL is an audio giant that constantly produces quality products. These headphones rock, but serious snowboarders should get a pair of chips instead.

BEST HEADPHONE CHIPS FOR SMITH BRAND LOYALISTS

Smith takes a risk by jumping into the headphone market. Their goggles and helmets are top-notch, but these headphones are a letdown. If you want a product that will seamlessly pair with your helmet, then these headphones may be for you. However, many people report that these headphones do not last long. Save your money, wait a few years, and give Smith a chance to improve its audio technology. For now, get yourself an Outdoor Tech pair of chips.

This allows for the battery to last longer, and for you to stay motivated on the slopes. They have a compact case for easy storage as well. BEST HEADPHONES FOR PROFESSIONALS PLAYING HOOKIE

Do you take conference calls from ski lifts? If that’s a dream you’ve always had, well you should get a different pair of headphones. But if you work remotely, and sometimes “work” from the mountain, these headphones will keep you incognito. The microphone is extremely powerful and will convince anyone that you are working from the comfort of an office. The audio technology on these is impressive, but they weren’t designed for snowboarders. If you want a pair of headphones for work and the slopes, purchase these.

Skullcandy Method

Specs

BEST CONTROL COLLAR HEADPHONES

Skullcandy has a loyal fan base among snowboarders. Many serious snowboarders prefer having a control collar instead of tap or touch controls over the ear. If you don’t want to be dependent on chips, the Method headphones are a great alternative. Instead of being dependent on a helmet, these will work in any sort of environment. Plus, Skullcandy’s patented technology ensures that your earbuds stay in the ear.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HEADPHONES FOR SNOWBOARDING

BATTERY LIFE

How long do you want your headphones to last in the mountains? If you catch first chair and hit 4 o’clock run AT 4 o’clock, then get a pair that will last a longtime. Also, a pair of headphones without bluetooth technology are nice because you don’t need to worry about charging them. They’ll last all day. It’s also important to remember that batteries drain faster in colder weather. If you board somewhere with tundra temperatures, the battery may drain much quicker than stated.

BLUETOOTH

Let’s face it, cords are annoying. Bluetooth technology solves that problem, but it requires battery power. Everyone has a preference on bluetooth nowadays. Go with what you love.

FIT AND STYLE

What sort of headphones are most comfortable for you? Do you want to use these headphones elsewhere, or are you afraid your co-workers will laugh at you? Headphone chips ROCK, but they are sometimes useless off the slopes.

MENU CONTROL

Headphones are great, but they can also be a major frustration. If you have gloves on, even more so. Headphone chips are typically much easier to manage than traditional or in-ear headphones. Some headphones feature a voice menu. This can annoy some snowboarders, who just want to listen to their tunes. But others find the menu helpful for controlling their music.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

COMES WITH HEADPHONE FRAME

If your headphone chips come with a frame, you can easily use them off the slopes. Only few headphones offer this, but it’s a deal-breaker for some.

COMPLETELY WIRELESS

These headphones don’t have a single wire, unless being charged. They will fit directly into your ear, over your ear, or inside your helmet.

CUSTOMIZABLE EQUALIZER

Do you like to pump up the bass? Or maybe you’re the boarder who likes to mute vocals so you can sing along. A customizable equalizer allows for you to mix your music and listen just the way YOU like to listen.

GLOVE AND MITTEN FRIENDLY CONTROLS

Headphone chips feature either massive buttons or one-touch technology. Keep your gloves on and maintain control of your tunes, volume, and voice commands.

WALKIE TALKIE APP

Sounds too good to be true? I know. But Outdoor Tech products pair seamlessly with one another. If you ride with a crew on a consistent basis, this function makes it easy to stick together. You won’t be texting each other trying to figure out where the heck good jumps are. With walkie talkie app connectivity, your crew will be inseparable.

It’s an extremely easy product to use and even if you’re just out for a few runs, this wax will provide you with that extra boost of speed for a smoother ride down the mountain.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SNOWBOARD WAX

As opposed to a helmet or pants, snowboard wax can be a pretty complicated purchase, especially when you’re a beginner. With so many different variations in application types and functioning temperatures, there are a few basics you should understand before buying your wax. Below we’ve listed out a few key points to consider, but if you want, check out what others have to say on choosing the best snowboard wax for you.

TEMPERATURE

First and foremost, check, double check, and then probably triple check the wax’s applied temperatures. NOT ALL WAXES WORK IN ALL TEMPERATURES. So, before buying your wax, make sure you know which is which. Most companies offer their products in several different versions. Some offer only one. In any case, if you’re a boarder, you’re going to want a colder wax. And if you’re a beginner who might want to use the wax for surfing as well, an all-temp wax may be better for you.

APPLICATION

Secondly, how do you apply the wax to your board? Do you iron it on, spray it on, rub it on? Each method has it’s benefits and faults. Ironing will glue the wax to your board longer, but it takes a long time to apply. Spray-wax is the quickest, by far, but it may only last a few turns and won’t fix any holes in your board. Lastly, rub-on wax fits somewhere in between. It’s easy to apply and in most cases, will last you a solid day, but after that, you’re looking at another application for every time you want added speed.

YOUR INTENTIONS

Are you a racer? Do you like backcountry? Or are you simply looking for a smoother ride down the mountain? Gauge your interest and base the wax you choose off your preferences. Don’t buy racing wax if you’re a beginner. Probably stay away from a spray unless you intend on heading out into the back-country. And consider rub-on wax over iron-wax if you think you might only use it once.

COST

Cost is the last thing to consider. Though there are a few waxes out there that cost nearly $100, most are cheap and vary little in price. Take into consideration the prior three qualities over price.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

IRON-ON

Quite literally, you need a hot iron to apply this type of wax to your board. This is a long process and may also require added tools to create a perfect layer of wax for your ride.

SPRAY-ON

Spray-on wax is exactly what it sounds like. Pop the top and spray it on. You may need a felt cloth to smooth it out, but there’s not much more to it than that.

RUB-ON

Rub-on requires a thick layer of wax to be rubbed on and then, in most cases, the buffing of that wax. This tool is usually included in the product, but double-check to make sure.

Unless you live at the bottom of a mountain, you’re probably going to have to pack your stuff up together for a long car ride to the slopes. Reviews - The Best Racks for Snowboards

Thule SnowPack

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Push To Open Design
  • Soft Rubber To Protect Boards
  • Adjustable For All Thicknesses Of Skis And Boards

BEST FOR: WARM WEATHER CAR-POOLING RIDERS

With four slots for boards and six for skis, the Thule SnowPack Extender 6 will keep your boards and skis safe for any ride. Up above your car and out of the way of dirt and gravel, the SnowPack Extender comes with a vertical spring system that allows you to adjust its dimensions for any sized ski or snowboard. And the large push-to-open design is built to open with gloves, so if you find yourself in a cold environment, you won’t have to take off your gloves to open it up.

This system is best for warm weather riders that don’t expect a lot of rain when driving, and boarders who don’t intend to have too much equipment apart from the necessities.

Yakima SkyBox Carbonite

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: Many
  • Snowboard Capacity: Many
Features
  • Closed-Top Box
  • Dual-Side Opening
  • No Assembly Required

BEST FOR: FAMILIES

Do you go riding with the whole family? What about camping? Or any other outdoor adventure with a ton of gear. If so, the Yakima Skybox is by far and away the best option on this list for you. With sizes available in 12, 16, 18 and 21 cubic feet, the Yakima Skybox can fit as much as you pack into it. Boards, boots, bags – you name it. The beauty of a skybox is that you can pack it full with anything and rest assured that it will all stay dry during the ride.

Occasionally, if in extreme environments, the lock and key system could freeze, but that’s nothing a lighter or some hot breath won’t fix. And if you’re an avid skier or boarder with long legs and big skis or a big board, make sure you buy the Skybox model that’s big enough to accommodate your size. Either way, we recommend this to all families. It will last a lifetime.

Kuat Grip

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Rubber Security Holds Keeps The Rack Firmly In Place
  • Slide-Out Feature Allows You To Slip Your Skis Or Snowboard Out Without Hassle
  • Metal Outer Shell For Superior Strength

BEST FOR: RUGGED ENVIRONMENT RIDERS

The Kuat Grip 6 Rack may be pricier than most other racks out there, but with a hard metal outer shell, a lightweight design, and capacity for up to four boards or six skis, you won’t regret this purchase. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Kuat Grip 6 is its slide-out design which allows you to simply slide out your board or skis during loading and unloading.

If you plan on traveling through windy, snowy, and rocky regions where a durable rack is needed to hold your skis and boards in place for years and years to come, then consider the Kuat Grip 6 for your next rack.

Yakima FreshTrack

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • One-Button Opening
  • Tool-Free Design Makes Installation Easy
  • Includes Attachment For Tall Bindings

BEST FOR: ALL RIDERS

Coming in at a reasonable price point and with enough capacity to suit all your needs, the Yakima FreshTrack 6 Rack will satisfy all your needs. Specific features to note are the tool-free design which allows for easy assembly and also the Ski Lift attachment for tall bindings. This attachment means that if your bindings are too tall or big, you can modify the mount to accommodate them with ease.

Great for all skiers and riders in mild weather, the Yakima FreshTrack 6 Mount will keep your equipment safe and secure for any ride.

Yakima FatCat 6 EVO

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Universal Mounting System
  • Wide-Expanding Hinges To Accomodate All Sized Skis And Boards
  • Large Easy Release Button

BEST FOR: LONG TERM RIDERS

Wide, easy to use, and stronger than most other racks, the Yakima FatCat 6 Evo may not be the first on our list, but it may just be the best. Wide-expanding hinges accommodate any sized ski or board while a large release button means you can operate this rack even with mittened or gloved hands in the cold.

The only thing to note is that if you have a T-slot crossbar on your car, you’ll need to purchase the Yakima SmarT slot Kit 2 for attachment. Apart from that, however, this is one of the lightest and most reliable racks on our list. Recommended to all riders, especially those of an advanced level looking to ride well into the future.

Thule Project Tram

Specs
  • Mount: Rear
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Ultra-Soft Rubber Keeps Rack In Place Without Damaging Your Car
  • Easy-To-Open Push-Button Design
  • Rear-Mount As Opposed To Roof Mount
Thule Project Tram

BEST FOR: RIDERS THAT WANT A REAR MOUNTING SYSTEM

It isn’t often that you’ll see a rear mount ski and snowboard rack, but every so often a great one hits the market.  If a rear style hitch is for you, the Thule Project Tram hitch is a safe bet for any rider. With capacity for up to 6 skis or 4 boards, the Thule Project Hitch will securely hold your gear in place on any road.

Things to note with a rear hitch include the likely need for more tune-ups as unwanted gravel and/or sludge from the road may make its way up into your board or bindings during the drive. Other than that, we recommend this hitch to any rider with a preference for a rear-hitch system.

Yakima HitchSki

Specs
  • Mount: Rear
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Soft, Flexible Rubber For Padding
  • Adjustable Arms For Mounting
  • Fits Most Bikes As Well
Yakima HitchSki

BEST FOR: MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES

Built to mount skis, boards, and bikes, the Yakima Hitchski mount is a bit cheaper and simpler than Thule’s model, but still a reliable option for any rear-mount seeking rider. With a secure lock and key system and the added customizability to suit your needs, this hitch is great for any rider looking for a mount that can be used for bikes as well.

INNO Gravity Universal

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 3
  • Snowboard Capacity: 2
Features
  • Soft and Hard Cushions For Thick Skis And Bindings
  • Customize And Set Mount Settings To Match Your Preferences
  • Universal Mounting System

BEST FOR: PERSONAL USE

With a universal mounting system that can attach to any car and a combination of soft and hard padding for any sized board or skis, this is a great, reliable model for single skiers and boarders. A unique memory mount means that after you set your car’s mounting parameters, the INNO Gravity will memorize that preset and keep it until changed otherwise.

If you’re looking for an above-car mount to store your board and perhaps a friend’s for a weekend trip, this is a great model for you as it is much more affordable than other models on the market. However, if you think you’ll ever escort a team out to the mountain, we suggest checking out one of the larger models on this list.

Rhino Rack

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Key Locking System For Security
  • Rubber Grips To Protect Equipment
  • Easy Release System For Gloved Hands

BEST FOR: YOUNGER RIDERS

With capacity for four boards side by side, a rarity amongst snowboard racks, the rhino rack ski carrier is extremely affordable and reliable for any group of riders looking to enjoy a long drive to the mountain. An easy-release system means that you can keep your gloves on when you’re grabbing a board, and if you choose to leave, the lock-and-key feature means you can keep your boards safe while you run to the bathroom.

A simple design, great capacity, and a low price point makes this rack an excellent choice for younger riders looking to hold on to some of their money while getting their first rack. Varying sizes in 10, 13, 20 and 27 inch diameters give you the freedom to find the perfect sized rack for you.

Thule Universal Flat Top

Specs
  • Mount: Roof
  • Ski Capacity: 6
  • Snowboard Capacity: 4
Features
  • Lock And Key Included
  • Universal Mounting System
  • Sturdy Carry For Snowboards

BEST FOR: RIDERS

Unlike other racks, the Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack carries snowboards by each base. This means that instead of some racks that hold your snowboard by the middle, this rack supports your board on either end of its base for a strong and secure carrying design. With a capacity of up to four boards and 6 skis, the FlatTop 6 is one of the cheapest models on the market with such capacity. We recommend this to snowboarders specifically over skiers, and to those who’d like to save some of their money.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD RACK

If you’ve read through this list, you’ve seen how greatly these racks can vary. From boxes to rear-hitches and simple clamp-closing systems, the verbiage is quite abundant when it comes buying a snowboard rack. To help you out, we’ve picked out some of the key features to consider when buying your snowboard rack, but if you want any more information, read through what others have to say on how to pick the best rack for you.

YOUR INTENTIONS

Before anything, ask yourself how many times you’re intending on riding this season and with how many people. The more you go, the more expensive a mount you should buy. And the more people, the bigger. You may also want to consider the length of your skis and board. Not all systems can accommodate all sizes of skis or boards. So make sure the rack you’re considering fits your specific needs before you hit that add-to-cart button.

STYLE

There are three main styles: rear-hitches, boxes, and overhead clamps. And here is what to consider for each:

  • If you’re an avid rider and biker looking for an all-in-one system, seek out a rear-hitch mount. It’ll save you some money in the end.
  • If you like to camp and want a rack that can serve multiple purposes, the overhead box might be best for you as it can store a bunch of extra gear as well.
  • And finally, if you’re a strict rider or board, overhead clamps will do just fine.

YOUR CAR

In rare cases, you may need to check your car’s mounting system to ensure the rack you choose is compatible with your vehicle. Not all mounts are universal, so when buying yours, make sure the rack is compatible with your car’s design.

ADD-ONS

Depending on which mount you buy, read through the description carefully to note the add-ons. Some rear-hitches require the purchase of an extra cord to secure the system to your car. And some overhead clamps require an adjustable kit for extra-tall bindings. So after you assess your personal intentions, make sure the board suits those, and if not, ask yourself if you’re willing to shell out the extra cash for a different model.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

JAW

You may see the word Jaw a lot while reading though racks online. This merely refers to the hinge itself and how wide it opens or doesn’t.

SKS

SKS, or Same Key System, means that you can use the same key on all of the product’s locks.

REAR-HITCH

A mount that attaches to the back of your car, like a bike-rack, instead of on the top.

Snowboarders are typically hoarders, collecting anything else their friends are trying to get rid of. If you’re smart, you can even piece together your entire boarding setup with second-hand equipment from friends. Once your setup is complete, you’re going to need somewhere to store everything. A good bag that actually fits your board isn’t easy to come by. Totes simply don’t cut it. Duffel bags are too small. Other options are awkward and leave your board prone to damage. Purchasing the best snowboard bag, however, will protect your gear, simplify transportation, and help you avoid being laughed at while lugging all your gear around.

Snowboard bags vary, which is why it’s important to think about what you will be using your bag for. Will it be more of a storage unit for your gear, staying in one place for long periods of time? Or will you be using it to travel from the Rockies to the Alps to the Andes? Would wheels make traveling much easier? Or are you going to be hauling your bag through the snow? A snowboard bag is the final piece in a complete snowboarding setup and there are plenty of options in this article.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD BAG

LOCKABLE ZIPPERS

Zippers, really? If you are going to be leaving your bag in a public place, a lockable zipper is recommended. These also come in handy when flying.

MATERIAL

All the bags included in this article are made with polyester. Polyester is a water-resistant fabric, so your gear will not get wet unless the weather is extreme. Bags with a thermoplastic backing protect your bag from the hard ground better than those without.

SIZE

Some people think it’s best to purchase the largest bag in order to get the most out of it. That’s not the case with a snowboard bag. Instead, try and get a bag that will fit snugly around your board. It’s much more difficult to transport a bag that slouches on the ends or has boards shifting around inside.

SHOULDER STRAP

Carrying a snowboard bag on your shoulder is much more comfortable than carrying it in your arms. If you buy a bag that comes with a strap, you will be able to carry your bag much longer distances. If you are flying with your bag and don’t want a bag with wheels, a shoulder strap is indispensable. On most bags, the shoulder strap is removable so you can choose to use it only when necessary.

WHEELS

What are you going to be using your bag for? If you’re going to be flying with your boards, then wheels will serve you well. However, if you are just tossing your snowboard bag in the back of your car and heading up to the mountains, wheels may not be necessary. A bag with wheels is more expensive, but often has many more features than a simple transport bag.

PADDED PROTECTION

Again, how do you plan on utilizing your bag? Traveling a bunch? Padded protection will serve you well. Driving to the mountains? Well, as long as you keep your bag stable, your boards won’t be damaged, so you can go without padding.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DUAL END HANDLES

If you can’t carry your bag alone, dual end handles will make carrying the bag between two people much easier. Before you purchase your bag, be sure to locate all of the different handles it has. Rolling bags typically have more options for transportation than simpler bags. For some, this may be a deal-breaker. For others, handles aren’t too important. Again, just think of how you want to utilize your bag.

COMPRESSION STRAPS

Straps on the inside or outside of your bag will really lock your board or boards into place. If not secured, boards can scratch against each other. Nothing is more frustrating than opening your bag at the slopes and finding a huge scratch on your snowboard.

LIFETIME WARRANTY

If you are going to put your bag through the wringer, the warranty should impact which bag you purchase. If you damage your bag years down the line, a company like Burton, Dakine, or Thule will replace it.

REMOVABLE INTERIOR BAGS

The most serious of boarders love this feature. It allows them to pack everything into one bag, or pack more boards into the main bag and carry their other equipment outside the bag. If you’re a beginner, it’s probably less of a necessity.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD BOOTS

TERRAIN

Before you can decide what kind of boot you need, you’ll need to know what kind of terrain you’ll be hitting, since different boot styles are made for different terrain types. There are three main terrain types and we’ve outlined them below. Once you decide on a terrain type, keep reading to select the boot style that will compliment your choice.

Freestyle

Freestyle riders like to tear up the terrain park. Their focus is on hitting features like jumps, rails, boxes, and other man-made obstacles. Their focus is on getting air and performing tricks rather than reaching high speeds and making deep turns.

Freeride

Freeride boarders do most of their riding in the backcountry where there is lots of big powder to be had, but Freeride trails may also include marked, ungroomed trails. Freeride boarders put an emphasis on speed. This group of skiers is usually characterized by an intermediate, advanced, or even expert-level skill set.

All-Mountain

All-mountain riders are the most common group of riders. Most of the people you see in a lift line are all-mountain riders. All-mountain riders tackle a variety of terrain, but mostly stick to marked groomed and ungroomed trails with a focus on turning and carving. This is not to say you won’t ever see them in the park or in the backcountry, but their main hangout is at the resort.

BOOT FLEX

Now that we’ve covered terrain, let’s get into boot flex!

Soft

Soft boots are built for the park rat (freestyle rider). You can think of them like you would a skateboard sneaker: they’re a little bit looser and softer and they allow for ankle and foot mobility. A softer boot lets the rider flex and move their own body more easily in order to perform jumps and tricks. Soft boots may be a good choice for some all-mountain riders, as well. If you prefer a more comfortable boot (at the cost of some stability and control), soft boots are a good choice.

Medium

Medium flex boots are a great choice for many riders because they offer a happy medium in terms of comfort and performance. They tend to be more comfortable than stiff boots, but they also provide more control than soft boots. Medium flex boots are a great choice for all-mountain riders. If you’re a beginner, they may take a little getting used to, but you’ll most likely be glad you chose medium over soft for the extra stability and performance they provide.

Stiff

Stiffer boots provide excellent control and stability. They’re a great choice for freeride-style boarders who will be relying on the stiffness of their boot to get them safely down the mountain, even at high speeds. One downside to stiff boots is that they are usually less comfortable than the other flex styles.

Adjustable

Adjustable flex boots have a strap or other feature that allows you to control how your boot behaves. If you plan to tackle a wide range of territory, adjustable flex boots could be a good choice for you.

BOOT LACING

Boot lacing is how you fit your snowboard boots snuggly on your feet for comfort and performance. But not all boots have the same lacing system! In fact, there are three different lacing systems on the market. We’ve outlined the main features of each below, but check out this article from REI Expert Advice if you would like more info on how to actually put on your boots and lace them properly.

Traditional

Traditional laces tie like the shoelaces of your sneakers would. They’re easily replaceable and low-cost, as well. However, they come undone most easily of all the lacing systems and are difficult to retie when you’re wearing gloves or mittens.

Quick-Pull

Quick-pull laces work by a pull cord that locks when it tightens. A bonus of this system is that it often has two pull cords – one to adjust foot tightness and one to adjust ankle tightness, allowing you to customize your fit easily. A drawback of this system is that when a quick-pull lace breaks, it often requires an in-shop repair.

Boa

The Boa lacing system incorporates an easily adjustable dial in a manner similar to the style of quick-pull laces. This is probably the easiest-to-adjust system and can be changed while wearing gloves or mittens. Most Boa systems only allow for a single adjustment instead of two-tiered adjustment like many quick pull systems.

BOOT LINERS

You’ll definitely want to get a boot with a quality boot liner! The liner of the boot is the part that touches your sock and it is essential for comfort. There are three kinds of liners:

Non-Moldable

The name “non-moldable” is a little misleading, since these liners will eventually mold to your feet, it will just take a long time. Non-moldable liners do not embrace new moldable technology, but they are the least expensive option.

Thermoformable

Thermoformable liners form to the shape of your foot when natural heat and pressure is given off during riding. They usually take about one full day to form. Thermoformable liners tend to be more expensive than non-moldable liners, but less expensive than custom moldable liners.

Custom Moldable

Custom moldable liners are high class. These bad boys must go through a process to mold perfectly to your foot. While you can perform this process at home, it is better to take them to a shop and have the professionals take care of it for you. These are the most expensive type of liner.

NEED MORE ADVICE?

Check out this article for in-depth information on various factors to consider when buying women’s snowboard boots (and what it all means).

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CARVING

The act of making turns back and forth on your snowboard to control your speed and make your way down the mountain.

GROOMED VERSUS UNGROOMED TRAILS

Groomed trails are found only at designated ski resorts and ski hills, where staff has used a special machine to give the trails a smooth feel. Ungroomed trails on the other hand, may be found at ski resorts but are also found outside of ski resorts, in the backcountry. Ungroomed trails feature powder snow that has not been altered by man.

POWDER

A term that skiers and riders often use to refer to fresh, untouched snow.

TERRAIN PARK

An area of a ski resort where you can find man-made features like jumps, rails, boxes, and half-pipes.
