Mountain biking can be an extreme sport where riders can experience an array of riding conditions on any given day. Depending on geographic location and time of the year, rain (or snow melt) can produce sloppy conditions that can add an additional element of adventure to the ride. Selecting the right mud guard, or fenders,  for your bike can reduce the amount of mud that you (and your bike) will be wearing at the end of the day. And unlike the more permanent style of fenders that your childhood bikes might have possessed, most of the newer versions can be added and removed as conditions dictate. As with any bike component, there are an array of options and finding the right one for your bike or riding conditions can be slightly overwhelming.

Don’t let the mud drag you down! Here at The Adventure Junkies, we pride ourselves in helping you choose the best gear for your next muddy experience. In this guide, we’ll help you pick the best mountain bike mud guard so you can stay relatively clean and mud free on your next foray onto the trails.

These lightweight mud guards are designed for all but the largest wheel diameters. They feature a stable mounting sheet that snaps on to provide superb protection from everything literally being thrown at you and your bike from the trail. The unique design covers a large area providing more protection for you and your bike. As a bonus, this set is less than some single products in this guide.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING MUD GUARDS

Unlike road riding, mountain biking takes the rider off-road where they are bombarded by an assortment of substrates. Certain geographic regions are more prone to muddier conditions and riding in these conditions can spray the bike (and rider) with mud, water, and loose pebbles. Over time, this grime can take its toll on your bike and the components. And while it’s important to clean your bike after each ride, preventing some of the material from reaching your bike is part of the battle.

Additionally, utilizing mud guards can have an additional benefit of protecting those riding with you from the spray that you’ll kick up if you’re the lead rider.

COST

Cost is not a primary concern as most mud guards in this guide are inexpensive. Even the most expensive model included here is a set (includes front and rear). The true benefit may come from protecting the other parts of your bike from the grime that can wear out other more costly components, thus reducing the lifespan of more costly items.

SIZE

All of the mud guards in this guide are designed for mountain bikes and are relatively low profile due to conditions that will be encountered when riding on trails.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene is one of the most commonly used plastics in the industry.

COMPOSITE

Made from two or more different materials to create a material possessing the properties of all of the included materials.

The company integrated ultra fine Merino wool fibers into its construction. Despite being made of wool, this mid weight top is surprisingly breathable, too, making for a great choice for high intensity activities. It’s important to note this extra breathability does reduce the warmth of the top, making it an ideal choice for wearing in spring and fall.

BEST FOR: DURABILITY

Paired with the bottoms by the same name, the pair will blanket you in extreme comfort and protection from neck to ankle. And just like bottoms, the top is created by spinning the merino wool around a nylon core to create a durable and lightweight layer that places the soft wool next to your skin where it prevails at keeping you insulated while wicking moisture away from the body. The raglan sleeves ensure that there’s no seam along the shoulder and that extra room exists in the underarms for freedom of movement. The lack of a seam along the shoulder is ideal when wearing a pack, so you won’t have uncomfortable stitching digging into your neck and shoulders while you hike.

Patagonia’s synthetic Capilene series is changing how we envision synthetic base layers — if you’re looking for an alternative to wool that keeps you just as warm and performs just as well, look no further. Patagonia crafted these bottoms from 100% recycled polyester in a diamond grid knit pattern that provides for superior warmth for its weight. These base layers also give wool a run for its money in terms of comfort thanks to the fleece-like interior feel. These are also coated with Patagonia’s proprietary odor control treatment to keep you feeling fresher longer.

What we like about the Patagonia Capilenes is how affordable they are for a synthetic product that rivals premium wool alternatives currently on the market.

These polyester blended bottoms are perfect for sleeping in the backcountry and staving off the early morning chills before hitting the trail again. They provide for a level of odor resistance and are very quick-drying. When combined with their affordability, this makes them ideal for backcountry adventures in mild weather conditions.

What we like most about these bottoms is how well the semi-fitted design layers with other pieces of clothing.

What we like most about these bottoms is how the redesigned gusset in the crotch improves the fit and flexibility.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A BASE LAYER

MATERIALS

There are a multitude of options to choose from in the baselayer market. For this particular guide, we’re only going to concentrate on the top three: Merino Wool, Synthetic, and Hybrid (blend of merino and synthetic). Choosing the best base layer can be a matter of preference as well as preferred choice of material.

Merino Wool

This is not the itchy wool your parents and grandparents wore. Merino wool is the only natural fiber in this guide and its natural properties make it ideal for warmth, odor control, and wicking properties. The fibers are thinner and softer than traditional wool. Wool tends to keep you warm even when it gets wet and naturally repels odors so you don’t have to worry about stinking up a wool base layer even if you wear it for weeks on-end during a thru-hike or multi-day ski trip.

Polyester

Until Merino came on the scene, synthetic base layers ruled the roost. Polyester is still preferred by many and with exception to odor control, it excels in the areas of durability, warmth and breathability.

Hybrid

Hybrid base layers possess the best of both worlds. Blended products incorporate the best properties of Merino wool and polyester. However, this option can also be one of the more expensive options.

INSULATION

There are 3 main categories of insulation: lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight. Some manufacturers may label the insulation levels differently, but they typically fall into one of those categories.

Lightweight

This is the thinnest and perhaps the most ideal for active pursuits on moderately cold days. Lightweight layers made from Merino wool can be less durable than polyester products as the thinner wool products tend to wear faster and may only last a few seasons while their synthetic counterparts can last substantially longer.

Midweight

As the name implies, this insulation weight is middle of the road. It’s a perfect base layer for active endeavors on cold days. It can also be worn as a standalone layer on cooler days.

Heavyweight

This is the paramount choice for relatively sedentary activities. The extra thick base layer can be overkill for activities like cross-country skiing, hiking, and even downhill skiing except on perhaps the coldest days.

FIT

To perform optimally, base layers should fit relatively snugly and perform like a second skin. The closer the material is to your skin, the better it can perform its intended purposes of moving moisture away from your body. Though, at the end of the day, it’s important to choose a product based on your particular needs and preferences for fit.

COST

Premium products often carry a premium price. While relatively moderately priced, base layers can be as essential as mid and outer layers. This will be the first layer of defense against the elements and it will be next to your skin. Therefore, it’s important to choose a layer based on its properties, fit, and comfort. Saving money won’t pay dividends if you end up shivering and cold sitting on a chair lift.

LAYERING

Layering is the key to thriving in active pursuits during cooler weather. Choosing a quality base layer is as essential to your overall comfort as building a proper foundation before building a house. This sets the stage for the performance of all subsequent layers.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BLUESIGN

Consumers seeking textile products that meet stringent environmental standards can rest assured when finding the “bluesign” designation label on a product. To receive this designation, a product must conform to these standards from the beginning to the end of the production process. Patagonia was the first brand member of Bluesign Technologies.

WICKING

Wicking is a fabric’s ability to draw moisture away from the body. Unlike cotton which absorbs moisture and makes it less than ideal for an insulating layer, natural fibers like Merino wool and synthetic fabrics like polyester are excellent moisture-wicking fabrics.

CREW NECK

Tops with a crew neck have a round neckline with no collar.

ZIP-NECK

As the name implies, tops featuring a half-zip (sometimes only feature a quarter-zip) allows the user the option to unzip to allow for further ventilation and it makes removing over a helmet or other gear easier than a crew neck. Also, the higher neckline provides more warmth as the neck can often be an exposed area.

RAGLAN SLEEVE

A raglan sleeve consists of one continuous piece of fabric that extends from the collar to the underarm. There is no shoulder seam in this style of shirt or jacket, which makes it more comfortable while wearing a pack because you won’t have uncomfortable seams digging into your shoulders while you hike.

FLATLOCK SEAM

Seams are butted together and joined with stitching to provide a nearly seamless design to avoid overlapping of layers.

DROPTAIL

When the back of the shirt or top is longer in the back than the front. This assists in helping to keep the shirt tucked in during active pursuits when regular hemmed products might come untucked.

GUSSET

In apparel design, a gusset is typically a triangular piece of fabric (can also be other shapes as well) that when sewn into a seam can increase mobility. These are often added to regions like the underarm, crotch, and other areas that might benefit from extra area in the product.

  • Width: 38”
  • Solo/Tandem: Solo
Features
  • Self-Bailing So It Won’t Sink If You Take On Water
  • Comfortable Folding Seat
  • Attachment Points For Gear

BEST FOR: CROSSOVER PADDLING

The STAR Raven I is a crossover inflatable kayak that excels in any flatwater and small whitewater rivers. This boat was designed to inspire confidence on the water. The self-bailing option is ideal for expelling the water from the kayak. The wide hull is specifically designed to create a stable platform for any level of paddler. And while this kayak is designed for a wide range of paddlers, keep in mind that inflatable boats are easier for beginners to enter and exit. It works well up to Class III+ whitewater rapids and the inflatable option makes it easy to store and carry.

Advanced Elements Attack Pro

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Length: 9’6”
  • Weight: 34 lbs.
  • Paddler Weight Range: 225lbs
  • Width: 35”
  • Solo/Tandem: Solo
Features
  • Self-Bailing Ports So The Kayak Won’t Sink If It Takes On Water
  • Adjustable Thigh Straps To Help You Feel Secure And Comfortable
  • Adjustable Seat

BEST FOR: SOLO INFLATABLE KAYAKING

If you want to take your inflatable whitewater game up a notch, consider the Advanced Elements Attack. While it has many of the same features as the other inflatable options in this guide, it also features adjustable thigh straps for staying secure when the water gets rough. The inflatable tubes are more forgiving than rigid boats in that they absorb the impact with obstacles in the water and often just bounce you off, sending you around rocks and trees without getting stuck. The self-bailing ports move the water that enters the kayak quickly away. And while it’s not waterproof, the stern of the kayak features a self-draining covered cargo area for stashing and securing gear on the river.

Riot Kayaks Magnum 72

Specs
  • Type: Solid
  • Length: 7’11”
  • Weight: 44 lbs.
  • Paddler Weight Range: 110-180 lbs.
  • Volume: 72 gallons/273L
  • Width: 26”
  • Solo/Tandem: Solo
Features
  • Floating Backrest For Seated Comfort
  • Two Rubber Grab Loops To Help You Right The Boat In Case Of A Roll
  • Suregrip Thighbraces So You Feel Super Secure In The Boat

BEST FOR: PLAYBOATING

The Riot Magnum is a boat created to play on the water. Armed with the perfect amount of hull angle (front and back) along with streamlined edges and just the right amount of buoyancy to allow you to drop below the water when desired and pop back up as needed. Imagine if you will, the river is like a pinball machine and the kayak is the ball. This boat is designed to bounce around on the water. The Magnum is designed to allow for maximum range of motion of your torso, thus allowing extreme maneuverability without trading off comfort. If you’re looking to take your game to the next level, this is the boat to take you there.

Driftsun Rover 120

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Length: 8.5’
  • Weight: 22 lbs.
  • Paddler Weight Range: 300lbs (Maximum)
  • Width: 36”
  • Solo/Tandem: Solo
Features
  • Inflates In About 6 Minutes
  • Front Action Camera Mount
  • Removable Rear Tracking Skeg (Acts Like A Rudder)

BEST FOR: CASUAL WHITEWATER ENTHUSIASTS

For some, being confined within a cockpit is just too much to fathom. With that said, there are options that allow the casual whitewater enthusiast to get on the water and enjoy some decent whitewater. The inflatable options are more forgiving and they’re similar to being in a solo raft. The inflatable tubes bounce off of rocks and other obstacles while providing an easy bail option should the river throw one your way. Since there isn’t a covered cockpit, water will pour over the sides, but don’t fret as the self-bailing ports will send the water straight back out. And when you’re done for the day, deflate the boat and toss it back in your car and head home.

Driftsun Rover 220

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Length: 12’6”
  • Weight: 28 lbs.
  • Paddler Weight Range: 600lbs (Maximum)
  • Width: 36”
  • Solo/Tandem: Tandem
Features
  • Inflates In Just Under 10 Minutes
  • Self-Bailing Drain Plugs
  • Can Hold Two Paddlers For Shared Whitewater Adventures

BEST FOR: TANDEM WHITEWATER ENTHUSIASTS

Want to take a friend along for the day? The Rover 220 is the tandem version of the Rover 120 above. It has the same features as the solo version but packs twice the fun. It features a large capacity (up to 600 pounds) for a full day on the water. And just like the solo model, you don’t have to worry about water filling up the kayak as the self-bailing ports allow the water to flow in and out at will. The advantages of inflatable models are that they inflate quickly (approximately nine minutes for the tandem) and take up minimal space in your car or in your garage. And, there’s a front action camera mount to capture all of the action from your day on the water.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A WHITEWATER KAYAK

TYPES

Not all whitewater kayaks are created equal. There are different styles to accommodate the specific needs of the boater. Choosing the right kayak model can be instrumental in determining what type of water you intend to run.

Freestyle/Playboats:

While this can easily be broken down into separate categories, they are similar in that the boats are typically shorter and are designed for surfing and performing tricks on the water. The one major difference is that playboats can be slightly longer and are still viable for running full lengths of the river while freestyle boats are only designed for performing tricks.

River Running Boats:

These slightly longer boats are designed to run fast whitewater while navigating obstacles and allowing for running drops. They tend to be lower volume than creek boats but higher than freestyle kayaks.

Creek Boats:

Creek boats (AKA Creeker) are high volume boats that typically feature more rocker and are designed for running steep and difficult river sections.

SIZE

The size of the boat typically dictates the number of paddlers that they will accommodate. However, in relation to whitewater kayaks, most of the boats in this guide are solo. The one exception is the Driftsun Rover 220 which is a tandem inflatable model and accommodates two paddlers.

WEIGHT

Most of the boats in this guide are relatively light as they are shorter to provide unprecedented maneuverability on the water. Seven of the ten included in this guide are hard-sided to protect the kayaker from the rocks in the river that will inevitably be encountered on any given run. The other three are inflatable and while weighing significantly less than the hard-sided boats, they don’t provide the same maneuverability.

PRIMARY USE

Determining the primary use of your kayak can help to best determine the type of water you plan to paddle. This is explained in greater detail in the TYPES section above.

COST

The inflatable options are cheaper than hard-sided models but are limited in the type of whitewater than can be run in these boats. Most all of the boats in this guide are affordable and all can provide years of quality use with proper care.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ROCKER

Rocker refers to the upward tilt of a kayak at the bow and stern. The more rocker translates to greater maneuverability of a kayak on the water.

HULL

The bottom of the kayak is the hull.

STERN

The back of the kayak is called the stern.

BOW

The front of the kayak is called the bow.

MOLDED-IN

Some of the boats in this guide are made of heavy duty plastic. When the boats are poured into the molds, some features can be created during this phase (i.e. cup holders, seat features, etc…).

SKEG

A skeg is like a rudder for your kayak. Skegs are typically integrated into the hull side of the stern and aid in keeping the kayak going in a straight line.

ROTOMOLDED

Also called rotational molded, this process involves pouring a specified amount of plastic into a hollow mold and rotating the mold allowing the plastic to disperse and stick to the walls of the mold evenly.

While some brakes are specifically designed for a particular type of mountain biking, the Hope Tech 3 E4 is suitable for any and all. It is compatible with 160, 183, and 203mm rotors which covers the gamut of rotor sizes and riding types. What we truly like about this brake is that the lever features a split clamp design that is easy to install without having to remove anything additional from the handlebars. And while this individual brake component is a little on the heavy side, doesn’t everyone need a little HOPE (that the brakes are going to work) when careening down the mountain?

Sram Code RSC

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 443g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • Ambidextrous Mount
  • Tool Free Adjustment
  • One Finger Operation
Sram Code RSC

BEST FOR: ROUGH TERRAIN

Okay, bonus points if you knew this. SRAM is an acronym for the company’s founders and the letters are a combination of their first names. Founded in the late 1980s, SRAM has now grown into a high-end component brand that has also acquired other brands throughout the years, including some other well known industry names.

The SRAM Code RSC brake can be fine tuned to dial-in the rider’s preferences. The brakes provide more pad contact and control with less lever action. This is ideal when barreling down a technical trail where you want a brake that will perform under extreme conditions and with excessive use.

Sram Guide RSC

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 375g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • One Finger Control
  • Stainless Steel Hardware
  • Compatible Rotor: 140 (Rear), 160, 170, 180, 200mm

BEST FOR: TECHNICAL RIDING

There comes a time in every rider’s life where they question whether they have the skillset to ride a particular trail or line. The same should not hold true when it comes to the reliability of your bike and its components. This will never be the case when the SRAM Guide RSC brakes are connected to your bike. Multiple proprietary features allow for fine tuning the braking to match your preferences without extensive knowledge and tool usage. The newer design also allows the brake to operate immediately when the lever is depressed, thus providing excellent modulation for a very responsive feel.

Hope Tech 3 V4

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 344g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • Fits 160-203mm Rotors
  • Top Entry Pad Replacement
  • Shifters Can Be Fitted Directly To Brake Levers

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL RACING

If it wasn’t already evident, Hope is perhaps one of the most respected names in mountain bike braking systems. This one piece caliper is light, strong, and super reliable which makes it ideal for downhill racing. Paired with the Hope Tech 3 lever, this system provides more power and adjustability for serious riders. The calipers are designed to accommodate a wide range of rotors depending on your riding type. While weighing in at under 350 grams, they weigh  more than some other models in this guide, but their durability and advanced technology make the extra weight worth it come race day.

Shimano Saint BR-M820

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 306g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • 20% More Stopping Power Than Previous Models
  • Tool Free Lever Adjustment
  • Superior Heat Management

BEST FOR: EXTREME DOWNHILL RACING

Founded almost a century ago, the Japanese brand Shimano may be one of the most recognized names in bicycle components. This is the third generation of the Shimano Saint series. The newest generation is designed specifically for downhill racing. The caliper features superior heat management utilizing self insulating ceramic pistons. This translates to a reduction in operating temperature of 50-degrees F and a 20% increase in stopping power. For a downhill specific brake, this is huge. Everything must be ideal in a race setup and this system rounds out the features with ergonomic levers that are easily customizable with tool free adjustment.

Shimano XTR BL-M9100

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 312g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 2
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Carbon
Features
  • Adjustable Lever
  • Updated Brake Lever Shape
  • Lighter Than Previous Models
Shimano XTR BL-M9100

BEST FOR: ALL RIDING STYLES

Shimano, a Japanese component manufacturer, has been making technical components for nearly a century. The Shimano XTR brakes may arguably be the best performing hydraulic disc brakes on the market and The Race model is the brand’s lightest hydraulic brake ever. So what makes it so light? The lightweight caliper is made of magnesium while the lever is made of carbon, creating a system that is the lightest setup in this guide. This, paired with the heat reducing full ceramic pistons in the caliper, allows the brakes to maintain a cooler temperature during intense braking on a technical course.

Magura MT7 HC Next Flip Flop

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 255g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • Interchangeable (Will Work As Either Front Or Rear Brake)
  • Tool Free Adjustable Lever
  • One Finger Lever

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL RIDING

Founded in the 1890s, Magura features German engineering at its finest. The Magura MT7 HC Next Flip Flop is ideal for downhill and all-mountain riders. Accommodating rotors at 180 and 203mm, this is the ideal setup for technical and steep terrain. The lever features a one-finger blade that modulates the braking power for an ultra-reliable system from start to finish. While not the lightest in the guide, it’s still well below others in the race category. While some brakes are sold as either front or rear, the Flip Flop can be used for either the front or the rear. And like other brand’s, the lever offers tool free adjustment for dialing in that customized feel.

Magura MT Trail Sport

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 485g
  • Individual or Set: Set
  • Number of Pistons: 4/2 (4 in the front and 2 in the rear)
  • Rotor Included: No
  • Lever Material: Aluminum
Features
  • Easy Brake Pad Replacement
  • Ergonomic Lever
  • German Engineered
Magura MT Trail Sport

BEST FOR: ALL-MOUNTAIN RIDING

The only set in this guide, the Magura Trail Sport is the perfect complement between performance and price. The set costs approximately the same as many of the other individual brake components in this guide. Also, at 485g (for the set), they are a lightweight package that delivers superb braking power. With a 2-piston system in the rear and a 4-piston system  in the front, the setup is ideal for extreme riding under any conditions without concern over performance. So whether you’re bombing down a technical descent or cruising the cross-country trails, this German engineered brake set will provide the confidence needed to get you down the mountain.

Sram Guide Ultimate

Specs
  • Claimed Weight: 218g
  • Individual or Set: Individual
  • Number of Pistons: 4
  • Rotor Included: Yes
  • Lever Material: Carbon
Features
  • Top Loading
  • Rotor Sizes: 140, 160, 170, 180, and 200mm
  • Tool Free Pad Replacement

BEST FOR: EXTREME STOPPING POWER

This is the Cadillac of the SRAM offerings in this guide (hence the ULTIMATE moniker). This also ensures that that they are the ultimate choice when paired with other SRAM components. Take your riding to the next level with a trusted brand and premium brake that will provide you extreme stopping power when you need it the most.  The proprietary adjustment allows you to pick the position you desire your fingers to be in when you engage the brakes and easily customizes the feel of the brakes without having to move the pads. You may get that warm (re: uneasy) feeling when staring down a steep technical drop, but the excellent heat management capabilities of the caliper ensure that your brakes won’t overheat as you begin your descent.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING MOUNTAIN BIKING BRAKES

RIDING PREFERENCE

Brakes for bikes are almost as varied as the bike themselves. Modern mountain bike brakes are designed for the particular riding style or terrain. The three main types of mountain biking are all-mountain, cross-country (XC), and downhill.

All-Mountain

This type of riding involves the same terrain that you might encounter while cross-country riding with perhaps some steep and technical descents.

Cross-Country (XC)

Cross-country mountain biking (or just XC) involves a lot of riding with very little technical terrain with a combination of uphill climbing and downhill riding.

Downhill

Popular at ski resorts, downhill riding takes place a lot during the summer where riders can take advantage of lift assist to get to the top. Once there, it’s all downhill and this can include flow trails, berms, rocky, and technical terrain.

ROTOR SIZE

Rotors come in an array of sizes and the type of riding you are participating in can dictate the size of the rotor. Generally, cross-country bikes utilize 160mm while all-mountain bikes use 160-180mm (some riders even use a combination with a larger rotor up front and smaller in the rear). Downhill bikes typically use the largest rotors at 200mm or larger.

COST

The price of brakes varies greatly. It’s important to make sure that the price you are willing to pay includes everything you need to replace the parts desired. Some products may include lever, caliper, rotor, and cables. Others may include any combination of the aforementioned components.

BIKE MAINTENANCE

Bikes contain a lot of moving parts. Having a working knowledge of how these parts interact and how to best maintain your bike can be advantageous. Bike shops are a great resource when looking for help with bike maintenance. However, if you’re on the trail or encounter a problem before a planned ride, it’s also a good idea to have a basic understanding of bike maintenance and brake adjustment.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ROTOR

The metallic disc mounted in the center of the wheel that’s inserted between the brake pads.

LEVER

The brake lever attaches to the handlebar. It is connected to the brake caliper. When the lever is depressed, the caliper tightens on the rotor, causing the bike to brake.

CALIPER

The caliper is where braking occurs. It contains a number of pistons that when engaged, push the brake pads into the rotor.

HYDRAULIC VS MECHANICAL BRAKES

With mechanical brakes, a tensioned cable connects the lever to the caliper. In hydraulic setups, the cable is replaced with hydraulic fluid. Mechanical brakes are typically less expensive and are easier to maintain.

MODULATION

When the brake lever is depressed, modulation is the amount of braking force that is applied and how that translates to stopping power.

If you’re looking for a quality performing pair of mountain bike pedals for under $25, look no further

The Imrider Lite is super grippy in all conditions thanks in part to the anti-skid surface, weather-resistant spindle, and sealed bearings. The pedal’s platform is designed in a concave shape that contributes to this pedal’s surprising amount of traction for the price.

What I like most about this pedal — other than the affordable cost — is the large platform it provides for your foot.

Funn Mambas

Specs
  • Material: Aluminum alloy
  • Weight: 499g
  • Style: Interchangeable
Features
  • SPD compatible
  • Patented Grease Renew System lets you top up grease without getting your hands dirty
  • 9/16" CrMo axle with sealed cartridge bearing and DU bushing

BEST FOR VERSATILITY

If you have an equal need for both flat and clipless style pedals, give the interchangeable flat/clipless Fun Mamba pedals a try.

This pedal features both a flat side and a clipless side. The clipless side sports an axle with a sealed cartridge bearing and DU bushing while the flat side has a grippy studded platform. It’s an extremely versatile option suited for casual riding as well as tackling technical terrain and wet conditions.

What I like most about the Fun Mambas — other than that they function as two styles of pedal — is that the platform on this one is longer than most comparable alternatives.

Time Speciale 8

Specs
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 196g
  • Style: Clipless
Features
  • ATAC (Auto Tension Adjustment Concept) Provides Easy Clip-in And Unclipping
  • Four Adjustable Spikes For Grip Even When Unclipped
  • Adjustable Clamping System For Tuning Spring Tension
Time Speciale 8

BEST FOR: ENDURO RIDING

For over 30 years, this French company has been creating high end pedals, shoes, and bikes. And while they currently only offer shoes and bikes for road riding, their mountain bike pedals and cleats cover a wide range of cycling types.

The Speciale 8 are designed for enduro riding as they feature a stable platform with four adjustable spikes for gripping even when unclipped. The ATAC (Auto Tension Adjustment Concept) engagement system allows for easy clipping in and for flawless unclipping capabilities. A micro-adjustable clamping system allows you to dial-in the spring tension for a customized fit. The pedals are designed to be self cleaning so mud doesn’t collect on the pedals.

Shimano Deore XT PD-M8020

Specs
  • Material: Stainless
  • Weight: 408g
  • Style: Clipless
Features
  • Adjustable Entry And Release Tension Settings
  • Integrated Cage Increases Stability Even When Unclipped
  • Large Retention Claws Provide Seamless Clipping/Unclipping

BEST FOR: ENDURO RACING

Shimano is a household name in cycling circles. For nearly a hundred years, the Japanese company has been making quality products and now the brand is well known for its cycling components. They even created the SPD pedal/cleat system.

And while these pedals are designed for enduro racing, they are also ideal across a broad spectrum of mountain biking discipline. The beauty of SPD is that it is so widely used that it’s easy to replace if something is damaged. The entry and release into the pedal is adjustable while an integrated cage improves stability even when unclipped. The large retention claws allow for smooth clipping and unclipping.

Shimano XTR PD-M9120

Specs
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 398g
  • Style: Clipless
Features
  • Large Contact Area For Better Power Transfer
  • Integrated Cage For Better Stability
  • Cylindrical Contact Area Aids In Shedding Mud

BEST FOR: CROSS-COUNTRY AND ALL-MOUNTAIN

The Shimano SPD pedal was first released almost 30 years ago. Since that time, the proverbial mouse trap design has been continually improved upon. The single biggest benefit of the SPD pedal is that it’s readily available should the need arise.

The XTR PD-M9120 is a continuation of that legacy. This all-mountain and cross-country pedal is ready to tackle the trails. The current iteration is lighter than its predecessors. It features a mud shedding cylindrical design to avoid the build up of mud on your feet and is designed to withstand frequent contact with trail obstacles. The wider platform will help ensure a better contact surface for stability.

Crankbrothers Stamp 3

Specs
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 399g
  • Style: Platform
Features
  • Five Year Warranty
  • Optimal Surface Area And Minimal Profile
  • Ten Adjustable Pins For Maximum Grip

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL RIDING

Founded in 1997, Crank Brothers has become a familiar name around bike shops and cyclists. And while their take on clipless pedals have changed the look and appearance of pedals, we felt compelled to include a pair of the platform (flat) pedals in this guide as well. The main thing to keep in mind with the Stamp 3 is that they are size specific. If you wear a shoe size of 5-10, it’s recommended to get the small and go with the large for any sizes above 10. These flats are relatively thin to create a minimal profile and the ten adjustable pins on each side provide maximum grip for downhill bliss.

OneUp Components Composite Flat

Specs
  • Material: Steel
  • Weight: 355g
  • Style: Platform
Features
  • Wide Platform Design For Increased Stability
  • Contoured Shape For Connected Feel
  • Ten Removable Steel Pins

BEST FOR: ENDURO RIDING

Located in perhaps one of the best regions in the world to experience mountain biking, OneUp is based in Squamish, British Columbia. This small manufacturer is quickly making a big name for itself in the component market.

These composite flat pedals are half the price of the brand’s aluminum model. With a subtle convex shape, it is designed to fit into the natural arch of the rider’s midfoot. The ten removable steel pins on either side provide exceptional grip while the low profile design assists in deflecting obstacles along the trail. They also come in a variety of colors to match your bike or your personal style.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING MOUNTAIN BIKE PEDALS

RIDING PREFERENCE

When choosing bike pedals, it’s important to consider the type of riding you plan to do. While all of the above pedals can be used for mountain biking, some are preferred over others for a particular type of mountain biking. The three main types of mountain biking are cross-country (XC), all-mountain, and downhill. However, we’re going to throw in a fourth type into the equation: Enduro.

Cross-Country (XC)

Cross-country mountain biking (or just XC) involves covering a lot of ground with limited technical terrain. This can be a combination of uphill climbing and downhill riding. This is the most common type of riding.

All-Mountain

All-mountain riding involves anything that you could run into during a full day of riding including steep ascents and descents.

Downhill

This type of riding is popular at ski resorts during the summer where they swap out some of the chairs on the lifts to accommodate bike holders. Once at the top, it’s all downhill. This can include flow trails, berms, rocky, and technical terrain. Most trails are ranked like ski runs based on difficulty.

Enduro

Enduro mountain biking combines the physical demands of cross-country riding with the technical aspects of downhill racing. Enduro racing is typically done in stages.

TYPE

There are generally two types of pedals used by mountain bikers: Clipless and Platform. The term clipless can be a bit confusing to those new to the sport as the pedals do involve clipping into the pedal. The term “clipless” has been used for decades, but the actual name could be “clip-in”. Clipless pedals require a cleat that attaches to a shoe. Platform pedals (or flat pedals) are probably the most common and perhaps you remember having something similar on your first bike. They can be ridden with regular shoes.

SHOE/PEDAL COMPATIBILITY

Choosing the right shoes for your pedal of choice will involve a little research. Platform pedals (flats) can be relatively straight forward. You can ride them with regular sneakers. However, they do make shoes that are specifically designed for riding flats. Clipless pedals are a little more complex. Cleats typically come with new pedals, but it’s important to make sure you check compatibility before purchasing pedals and shoes.

COST

Since many new bikes come without pedals, you may be faced with the necessity to purchase pedals. Even if the bike you purchased did come with pedals, it might be worth the investment to find a new set as stock pedals are often not the best. The cost of pedals can range from relatively inexpensive for basic clipless or platform pedals to more expensive for technical pedals for racing.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CLEATS

Used in conjunction with the clipless pedal system, cleats are attached to the bottom of cycling shoes and the cleat clips into the pedal. Different pedal brands often have different cleats for their pedals.

SPD

SPD is a proprietary system created by Shimano. It stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics.

CLIPLESS

While these pedals actual require you to clip-in, they allow for a better transfer of energy through the foot and prevent your shoes from slipping off the pedals when riding on uneven terrain.

FLATS

Flats is another term for platform pedals.

ATAC

ATAC is the engagement system used by TIME pedals. It stands for Auto Tension Adjustment Concept.

This two-piece, largely fiberglass paddle features a three hole button-snap ferrule (connection point between the two pieces) that allows for adjusting the blade angle to accommodate paddling technique. However, if you’re relatively new to the paddling arena, you can just put it together and hit the water.

If you get your line caught on a branch, the integrated hook retrieval system will allow you to extend your reach while the measuring tape on the shaft of the paddle will allow you to quickly access which fish to keep and which to throw back.

This heavy duty paddle is ideal for propelling those heavier and bulkier kayaks. The shaft on this two-piece paddle is adjustable from 230-240 centimeters thanks to the push button ferrule (the joint that connects the two parts of the paddle). The dihedral blade (two planes) promote a smooth and stable ride on a variety of surfaces and conditions. A line hook in the blade can assist in retrieving that snagged line so you’ll never lose your prized lure.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FISHING KAYAK PADDLE

COST

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’ve already purchased a fishing kayak or have plans to do so. In addition to a kayak, a paddle will be one of the next purchases that follows. Price can play a big role in choosing a kayak paddle. Brand, materials, and features can also factor into the cost of the paddle.

PADDLE LENGTH

Choosing the right sized paddle can be one of the easiest decisions to make. The height of the paddler and the width of the boat are two factors that determine the length of the paddle. Taller paddlers will need longer paddles. Wider kayaks, like those typically used for fishing, will also often require longer paddles. As variations can occur between manufacturers, it’s best to refer to each brand’s specific sizing to determine the appropriate size for you.

PADDLE MATERIALS

Just like with kayaks, paddles come in an array of materials. Aluminum and plastic (polypropylene) are typically the heaviest and cheapest options. On the flip side, carbon fiber is the strongest, lightest, and most expensive material used in paddles. Other options include fiberglass and composite (blend of multiple materials). Paddles can be comprised of multiple materials. The blades can be made of one material while the shaft is made from a different material.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BLADE

Kayak paddles contain two blades. The blades provide the surface area on the paddle that allow the paddler to propel themselves through the water.

SHAFT

The shaft is the handle of the paddle and connects the two blades.

FERRULE

A ring or band (often metal) strengthening or forming a joint. In the case of multiple piece paddles, the ferrule is the joint joining the two pieces.

POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene is a type of plastic and is harder and more heat resistant than other types.

CARBON FIBER

Carbon fiber is the strongest and lightest paddle material on the market. It also garners the highest price tag.

FEATHERING

Feathering refers to the angle that the blades are offset from one another. Most kayak paddle shafts allow you to rotate them to feather the blades (so they’re not on the same plane). Matched blades are all within the same plane. Depending on the paddle, feathering can be adjusted in set increments or in some cases, feathering can be fine tuned.

DIHEDRAL BLADE

Dihedral blades are easily identifiable by the ribbed separation down the center of the blade. This perpetuates a natural flow of water over both halves of the blade.

ASYMMETRICAL BLADE

As opposed to symmetrical blades, asymmetrical blades are shaped differently in relation to the shaft. When holding the paddle and looking at the blade, the top side is typically longer and tapers downward to the bottom. This design provides a much more efficient paddling style.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FISHING KAYAK

STYLE

While fishing from a kayak is possible in any boat, there are a multitude of options on the market that are specifically designed and outfitted for angling on the water. Choosing the right model for your needs can involve a variety of criteria including where you intend to use it primarily, your budget, and your style preferences. You’ll want to consider where you plan to fish the most and whether or not you prefer to stand while casting when making your decision about which fishing kayak to buy off our list above.

While it is possible to use an inflatable boat for fishing, we limited our kayaks for this guide to rigid models for their durability. We also chose only sit-on-top models as they are more likely to allow the possibility to stand while casting. Rigid sit-on-top kayaks are also easy to get in and out of and their superior stability makes the transition from sitting to standing nearly seamless.

SIZE

The size of the boat typically dictates how easy it is to handle, how stable the kayak will be on the water, and the number of paddlers it will accommodate. Solo boats only have one seat while tandem boats can accommodate two passengers. Longer boats are generally narrower and track easier under a variety of conditions while shorter boats tend to be wider and offer greater stability.

Several of the boats in this guide are designed for standup fishing and thus are wider for added stability while standing. Pay attention to the length and width listed for each kayak and consider where you’ll be paddling and how you prefer to fish to make an informed decision about what size and shape of boat will work best for your needs.

WEIGHT

The boats in this guide are rugged and stable, which means they also tend to be on the heavier side of the spectrum. The kayaks listed above range from 50 – 78 pounds. They are all made of a durable type of plastic, which means they can endure years of constant use with little to no maintenance to the bottom of the boat (the hull).

When deciding which fishing kayak to buy, think about how much you can comfortably carry by yourself, and whether or not you’ll have a partner or friend to help you load and unload the kayak when you go fishing. Also consider how much you weigh and how much gear you plan to carry, and double check those weights with the maximum weight capacity of whichever boat you’re considering purchasing.

Keep in mind that heavier kayaks tend to be more stable on the water and they typically allow you to carry more gear because they also have a higher weight capacity. Lighter kayaks are easier to carry from land to water and back, but they may not be as easy to maneuver on the water. With a lighter-weight boat, you also can’t bring as much extra gear because the weight capacity is less and you don’t want to risk overloading your kayak and possibly sinking before you even reel in your big catch of the day.

PRIMARY USE

Determining the intended use of your kayak can play a role in selecting the ideal model. All of the boats above are designed specifically for fishing, although some of them can double as recreational watercraft if you want to get out on the water without your pole sometimes too.

Think about whether you’d prefer to fish by yourself or with a friend before deciding which kayak is right for you. If you plan to paddle solo, then there are nine options above that fit that criteria. If you are looking to head out on excursions with a friend or family member, the BKC TK122 is the only boat on our list that will get you both out on the water in a single boat.

COST

While there are more expensive boats on the market, we limited this roundup to those that fell below the $1,000 mark. Therefore, all of the boats above can be purchased for that price point.

If your budget is limited, consider what other gear you will need to procure to set off on your kayak fishing adventure. For propelling the kayak through the water, you will need a paddle, and only the Vibe Yellowfin 120 comes with one included in the package. A PFD (personal floatation device), or life jacket, should also be included in your kit every time you hit the water.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HULL

The bottom of the kayak. A well defined hull will track better in the water and therefore move more quickly across the surface. A wider hull will provide greater stability.

STERN

The back of the kayak is called the stern.

BOW

The front of the kayak is called the bow.

MOLDED-IN

The boats in this guide are all made of heavy duty plastic. A plastic mold is used to create the shape of the kayak. When the plastic is poured into the mold, cup holders, rod holders, and tank wells are created as part of the boat’s construction, so each of these features are considered to be “molded-in.”

INTEGRATED TRACK SYSTEM

Multiple boats on the list above come with track systems that will accommodate fishing accessories that are sold separately. These can include additional drink holders, rod holders, and fish finders.

STORAGE HATCH

In addition to the tank wells which are located on the outer surface of the kayak’s deck, storage hatches are compartments located within the boat that allow for additional gear storage.

BUNGEE DECK LACING

Gear is easily secured in the molded-in tank wells by means of bungee deck lacing, which simply consists of elastic cords stretched between fixed points.

  • Weight Capacity: 300 lbs
  • Width: 25”
Features
  • Hull Offers Plenty Of Room To Store Gear
  • Comfortable Foam Seat With Adjustable Backrest
  • Material Can Be Folded and Unfolded Thousands Of Times
  • Fits In The Trunk Of Your Car
Oru Kayak Bay ST

BEST FOR: EASY ACCESS KAYAKING

The overall benefit of the Oru Kayak is its ability to be folded and unfolded. Unlike the other boats listed, once folded, this kayak fits easily inside your car or SUV. The others require a rooftop rack system or a truck for transporting to and from the water. And, once home, it stores away easily until ready for your next outing.

When reaching your paddling destination, the Oru unfolds and takes on its kayak form in just minutes. Did we mention that it’s also the lightest boat in this guide? The hull features plenty of gear storage for day trips and perhaps short overnight trips. The double-layered polypropylene (tough plastic) that this kayak is made of is tested and able to be folded and unfolded thousands of times without weakening the integrity of this durable material.

Old Town Dirigo 120

Specs
  • Type: Hardshell
  • Capacity: 1
  • Length: 12’
  • Weight: 50 lbs
  • Weight Capacity: 300-350 lbs
  • Width: 27.75”
Features
  • Cushioned And Adjustable Seat
  • Small Hatch For Storing Cell Phone, Wallet, And Keys
  • Built-in Cup Holder
  • Paddle Keeper Holds Paddle Secure When Not Paddling
Old Town Dirigo 120

BEST FOR: BEGINNERS

The Dirigo is ideal for beginners. The width helps with stability for even the most novice kayaker. The 3-layer polyethylene ensures a super durable hull (kayak bottom) and easy care. At twelve feet in length, the hull design contributes to the kayak’s stability and promotes excellent tracking for a boat this size.

The cushioned and adjustable seat supplies a comfortable ride from start to finish while a cup holder keeps your beverage close at hand. A small hatch provides storage for your phone, keys and other essentials while on the water. The sliding seat is also adjustable. The stern hatch, where you can store all your gear, features an audible click to ensure a proper seal. Bungee decking located at both the stern and the bow provides extra gear storage. The other cool feature is the paddle keeper, which holds the paddle secure for you when you decide to stop to fish or take photos.

Old Town Castine 140

Specs
  • Type: Hardshell
  • Capacity: 1
  • Length: 14’
  • Weight: 53 lbs
  • Weight Capacity: 375 lbs
  • Width: 24.75”
Features
  • Bow And Stern Bulkheads (for plenty of storage)
  • Rudder Ready (Sold Separately)
  • Bow And Stern Carry Handles
  • Covered by Old Town Lifetime Warranty
  • Cradle Keeps Phone Easily Accessible

BEST FOR: SEA KAYAKING

This is a great beginner boat for sea kayaking or cruising the intracoastal waterways while meandering through the salt marshes and tidal creeks. The rotomolded polyethylene (plastic) shell is perfect for beginners as it’s very forgiving when running aground on oyster beds and rocky shorelines, or when accidentally bumping into docks.

The Castine features a low-profile, padded backrest that will provide all day comfort. The Slide-Away day hatch in the cockpit is perfect for stashing your phone or other necessities for quick access. This kayak features two quick-seal hatches for storing picnic supplies or for camping gear and supplies for overnight trips. The bow and stern carry handles make carrying the boat to and from the water an easy task. And while the Castine doesn’t come equipped with a rudder or skeg, it is rudder ready and can be purchased separately and added easily at home.

Eddyline Fathom

Specs
  • Type: Hardshell
  • Capacity: 1
  • Length: 16’6”
  • Weight: 50 lbs
  • Weight Capacity: 340 lbs
  • Width: 22”
Features
  • Deployable Skeg (Rudder)
  • Sliding Seat Is Adjustable
  • Dry Hatch For Accessibility On The Water
  • Two Large Watertight Hatches For Gear Storage

BEST FOR: KAYAK TOURING

This elegant boat is ideal for kayak touring. While it is the most pricey boat in this guide, it’s features are worth every penny for the experienced paddlers. Made of state-of-the-art materials, the Fathom is designed to glide through the water with precision and ease.

Two large watertight hatches provide access for gear storage for long day trips or multi-day excursions. The bow and stern bulkheads keep your gear dry while also adding positive flotation to this boat. Additional storage options exist along the bow and stern decks via bungee straps. There is also a day hatch and convenient on-water accessibility. The deployable skeg (or rudder) will aide in the steering of the kayak without continual correcting with paddle strokes.

Perception Sound 9.5

Specs
  • Type: Hardshell
  • Capacity: 1
  • Length: 12’8”
  • Weight: 38 lbs
  • Weight Capacity: 300 lbs
  • Width: 28”
Features
  • Drain Plug At The Stern (to help drain water from the boat)
  • Two Molded-in Rod Holders Behind The Cockpit (for easy fishing)
  • Self Bailing Gear Storage Well (to prevent your stored gear from getting wet)
  • Padded Adjustable Backrest
  • Comfortable Bow And Stern Carry Handles

BEST FOR: PADDLING AND FISHING

The Perception Sound is the shortest and the most budget friendly option in this guide. Made from a strong plastic called polyethylene, it ensures a long lasting and durable boat. Its short length makes it ideal for lakes and slow-moving rivers. The tri-keel hull (bottom of the boat) also adds extra stability for beginners and while fishing. A keel is like a fin that extends down further into the water to help keep the boat stabilized. This kayak has 3 such smaller fins molded into the hull.

For the avid angler, there are two molded rod holders within easy reach behind the cockpit. This boat also features a self-bailing stern gear storage with bungee straps for securing a small cooler, fishing gear, or other items. For long days on the water, the cockpit features a padded adjustable backrest. The area in front of the cockpit allows for additional accessories to be mounted (purchased separately). For easy cleaning, a drain plug is found in the stern.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A SIT IN KAYAK

KAYAK STYLE

Sit-inside (or cockpit) kayaks offer the paddler more protection. While sit-on top kayaks are easier to get in and out of, they offer very little protection from the elements. Cockpit kayaks can have large or small openings depending on the intended use. True sea kayaks typically have a smaller cockpit opening, are narrower, and are generally longer. Recreational kayaks with a cockpit are wider, shorter and have a larger opening for the cockpit.

Sit-in kayaks typically have a lip around the cockpit opening. This lip allows for the addition of a spray skirt. The spray skirt allows the paddler to seal off the cockpit around their body, and prevents unwanted water from entering the cockpit. This is particularly important when kayaking offshore as wind and surf can easily swamp a kayak.

SIZE

Kayaks come in a variety of sizes. Sea kayaks are typically long and narrow. Recreational kayaks are generally shorter and wider. The size of the kayak will determine its overall intended use. It’s best to consider what type of kayaking you plan to do (see primary use below). Longer kayaks typically move through the water with greater ease and speed while shorter kayaks tend to be bulkier, but do provide more stability and can be great for fishing or general recreational use.

WEIGHT

Aside from the folding version on our list above, most of the kayaks in this guide are heavier than inflatable kayaks. Due to their rigid hulls, most require a rooftop rack system for your car or a pickup truck to transport them to and from the water trailhead. If kayaking alone, weight may be a greater consideration as lugging a bulky and heavy kayak to and from the water can be a chore.

Loading and unloading heavier kayaks onto the roof of a car solo can also be tricky. If kayaking with others, the weight is mitigated as there are multiple people to help transport the boats to and from the water and load and unload from the vehicle. Think about how much you can easily carry if you plan on kayaking alone before deciding which sit-in kayak is best for you.

PRIMARY USE

There are a variety of kayaks in this guide. The Perception Sound and the Old Town Dirigo are recreational kayaks and are better suited to lakes and slow moving rivers. The other three can be used on the same waterways, but can also be used in intracoastal waterways, tidal creeks, and, given enough experience, even offshore.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HULL

The bottom of the kayak is called the hull.

STERN

The back (or rear) of the kayak is called the stern.

BOW

The front of the kayak is called the bow.

COCKPIT

Sit-in kayaks are more commonly referred to as cockpits. The lower body of the paddler is inside the kayak and only the torso extends above the rim of the kayak.

POLYETHYLENE

More commonly referred to as plastic. It is very durable and will last a long time and is very forgiving.

BULKHEAD

A bulkhead is a structural partition which separates compartments. In kayaks, these partitions separate the bow and stern compartments from the cockpit.

POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer. It is a type of plastic but is harder and more heat resistant than most other types.

CARBONLITE

Carbonlite is a proprietary plastic laminate. It is a high performance material and it also 100% recyclable.

Salomon X Ultra 3 Gore-Tex

  • Gore-Tex® waterproof liners
  • Soft textile linings wick moisture away
  • Ortholite sockliners combine a specific Ortholite foam and contoured EVA heel cups for enhanced heel support and cushioning

Salomon X Ultra 3 Gore-Tex

BEST OVERALL HIKING SHOES

Providing for the optimal blend of light weight, durability, and comfort, the X Ultra 3s are a great companion for wearing on pretty much any hiking trail you travel.

With multiple models to choose from, you’re sure to find an X Ultra 3 that is perfect for you. This Gore-Tex model offers excellent water resistance but this does cause the shoe to run warmer than the non-waterproof models. The sole of this shoe has impressive grip across a variety of terrains and substantial cushioning to ease the weight of carrying a heavy pack. The synthetic uppers and beefy toe cap help keep this shoe on the trail for years to come.

What I like about this choice is how versatile the line-up is, including lightweight, wide, and a non-GTX model you can choose for better breathability.

Merrell Moab 2 Ventilator

Specs
  • Height: Over-the-ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 15oz
  • Waterproof?: No
Features
  • Performance suede leather and mesh uppers with protective rubber toe caps
  • Bellowed, closed-cell foam tongues keep moisture and debris out
  • Merrell Air Cushion in the heels absorbs shock and adds stability
  • EVA midsoles provide stability and comfort
  • Vibram TC5+ outsoles have a 5mm lug depth for grip
Merrell Moab 2 Ventilator

BEST FOR: HIKERS ON A BUDGET

When you need a quality hiking shoe for your next adventure and you don’t have a lot to spend, consider the Moab 2s — they just might be exactly what you’re looking for.

These perfect summer time hiking shoes excel at keeping your feet cool and comfy all day. Durable synthetic uppers offer substantial ventilation and increased cushioning in the heel provides for support when you’re carrying a heavy pack. The Ventilator model described here is perfect for hot weather hiking but it’s important to note that there is a Gore-Tex version, which may suit hikers in wetter conditions.

What I like about the Moab 2s is that for a moderate price, you can get a long-lasting pair of hiking shoes.

Hoka One One Toa Gore-Tex

Specs
  • Height: Over-the-ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 14.2oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • Waterproof nubuck leather uppers and GORE-TEX® waterproof booties provide a complete barrier against wet weather
  • Mesh collars offer breathability and comfort
  • Gusseted tongues offer secure midfoot lockdown
  • Rubberized toe caps provide protection against trail debris
Hoka One One Toa Gore-Tex

BEST FOR: COMFORT ON OR OFF TRAIL

These plush, well-cushioned kicks are designed to protect your feet and joints from excessive soreness — as well as help with injury prevention — after a long day out on the trail.

Rocker-designed soles with multiple layers of foam help make these shoes one of the most comfortable hikers available. A soft synthetic fabric is wrapped around the foot like a cloud to help prevent the formation of hot spots and slow blister development. The slightly taller ankle support inspires confidence while cruising through rocky or loose terrain. Last but not least, an oversized outsole serves to adequately protect you from contact abrasion with rocks and sharp objects that you might encounter out on the trail so you can focus more on your surroundings and less on your feet.

What I like most about the HOKA One Toas is that even with the substantial extra support and comfort these shoes provide, they still only weigh in just a little over 2 pounds.

Arc’teryx Aerios FL GTX

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 8.4oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • GORE-TEX® membranes provide waterproof protection at a light weight across variable conditions on the trail
  • Toe caps guard against stubbed toes
  • 4mm thick OrthoLite® 3D molded insert adds cushioning
  • Vibram® Megagrip outsoles deliver surefooted traction across varied terrain
Arc’teryx Aerios FL GTX

BEST FOR: ULTRALIGHT HIKING

If you enjoy maximum freedom of movement and feeling like you are not wearing shoes at all, look to the Aerios.

Minimalist hiking shoes are gaining traction in the hiking industry as more people opt for lightweight footwear over the clunky boots of trail days past. These Gore-Tex lined shoes are not only waterproof but weigh only 1.6 pounds, making them ideal for long trips and thru-hiking. The ankle support for these shoes is slightly lower than other alternatives, which does open the door to potential ankle rolling, but when worn properly, these shoes can carry you a long way injury free. Even with the waterproof layer incorporated into these shoes, the cordura mesh upper still breathes rather well.

What I like about these shoes is the waterproof liner that allows you to move through small puddles with ease, an uncommon trait associated with minimalist shoes.

La Sportiva TX4

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 10oz
  • Waterproof?: No
Features
  • Durable leather uppers provide comfort and abrasion resistance in rugged terrain
  • STB Control System™ delivers torsional rigidity and support without encumbering underfoot cushioning
  • OrthoLite® insoles offer comfort and odor control
La Sportiva TX4

BEST FOR: ROCKY TERRAIN

Next time you plan on tackling a rocky summit, be sure to don the TX4s for the ultimate combination of comfort and traction.

By redesigning the sole of these shoes, La Sportiva was able to boost traction without adding weight, making them ideal for ascending or descending steep, bouldery slopes. A thick rubber sole, full rubber rand, and durable leather upper inspires confidence for moving fast. If you don’t mind the stiffer midsole integrated to increase underfoot support while scrambling, these shoes are equally suitable choice for everyday hiking. The drawstring woven into the lacing allows you to achieve a snug fit around the foot without becoming so tight that you experience rubbing or chaffing.

What I like most about these shoes is despite being designed as approach shoes for climbing, they’re surprisingly light, weighing in at 1 pound 10 ounces.

Merrell MQM Flex

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 3oz
  • Waterproof?: No
Features
  • Breathable Mesh Linings
  • Air Cushions In The Heel (to absorb shock and add stability)
  • Proprietary Grip Rubber Outsoles Provide Excellent Traction

BEST FOR: MOVING QUICKLY IN THE MOUNTAINS

Merrell was founded nearly four decades ago with a mission to design and manufacture handmade custom boots. One of those original styles remains in the brand’s lineup today. Today, this industry leader creates a multitude of footwear options all while remaining true to their humble beginnings.

Utilizing a variety of proprietary materials, the MQM Flex is chocked full of features for moving light and fast on the trail. Synthetic uppers and breathable mesh linings will protect and keep your feet comfortable for extended outings. The M Select Grip rubber outsoles provide excellent traction for a variety of trails and conditions.

Oboz Sawtooth II Low

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 2lbs 2.8oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • Proprietary Waterproof Membrane
  • Breathable Mesh Vents
  • Asymmetric Ankle Collars For Increased Comfort

BEST FOR: LONG DAYS ON THE TRAIL

Founded in Bozeman, Montana, Oboz is a company as committed to producing quality footwear as they are to protecting the environment. The company’s headquarters is powered entirely by wind power and the brand plants a tree for every pair of shoes sold.

The Sawtooth II Low BDry features a waterproof leather upper with a moisture-wicking mesh liner for breathability. In addition to the naturally waterproof properties of the leather upper, this shoe utilizes a proprietary waterproof and breathable membrane called “B-Dry”. Located in the liner, this membrane allows moisture to escape from the inside of the shoe while keeping out the elements for a comfortable hike every time. Asymmetrical ankle collars (lower on the outside and higher on the inside) accommodate a wide range of movement on a variety of terrains.

Salomon OUTline Low GTX

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 7.8oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • Protective Toe Caps For Extra Protection
  • Antimicrobial Treated Footbeds For Odor Control
  • Gusseted Tongue Aids In Keeping Debris Out Of The Shoe

BEST FOR: TECHNICAL AND AGILE ADVENTURES

Salomon was founded as France was emerging from World War II. Their initial offerings included ski edges and saw blades. Born in the French Alps, the brand evolved, as did the market for outdoor sporting equipment and apparel. Today, the company is internationally known for producing high quality products for hiking, trail running, adventure racing, skiing, and snowboarding.

The OUTline Low GTX is the evolution of a running shoe paired with a hiking boot. The shoe is technical and agile, yet also rugged enough to protect your feet on the trail. This lightweight hiking shoe features protective rubber caps around the toes to prevent painful stubbing on roots and rocks. And, it’s waterproof with a Gore-Tex lining on the interior of the shoe to keep your feet dry in case you get caught in the rain on the trail.

It also comes with a gusseted tongue, which means that it’s attached at its sides to the shoe’s upper. This style of tongue helps prevent debris from entering the shoe from the top. The brand’s proprietary rubber outsole is called Contagrip and is designed to grip any surface, no matter how slick.

KEEN Venture Low WP

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 2lbs 2oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • Mesh Uppers For Breathability
  • Natural Odor Control
  • Proprietary Waterproof Membrane (to keep your feet dry)

BEST FOR: GO-ANYWHERE SUPPORT

Keen is a relative newcomer in the footwear industry. What started in 2003 with the brand’s iconic hiking sandal has blossomed into a brand that features both lifestyle and active options.

Utilizing an array of proprietary materials, the Venture Low WP is a lightweight go-anywhere shoe. It features a KEEN.DRY waterproof and breathable membrane to keep the water out while allowing moisture to escape the interior of the shoe so you can hike comfortably through puddles or wet grass without worrying about soaking your socks. The Keen All-Terrain rubber outsoles provide high-traction grip on a variety of terrain. The mesh uppers are further reinforced with synthetic overlays that help to increase the durability as well as the lifespan of the shoe.

Vasque Breeze LT Low GTX

Specs
  • Height: Ankle
  • Weight: 1lb 6oz
  • Waterproof?: Yes
Features
  • Moisture Wicking Materials
  • Abrasion-Resistant, Microfiber Mesh Uppers (for increased breathability and durability)
  • GORE-TEX Waterproof Membrane (to create a waterproof environment for your feet)

BEST FOR: LONG DISTANCE HIKES

Founded in 1964, the brand was founded with a singular mission to get Americans outside and hiking. Over five decades later, Vasque continues to create dependable and durable products utilizing innovative technologies and materials.

The Breeze LT Low features an outsole that combines Vibram Megagrip with Vibram Lightbase technology to provide exceptional traction with a 25% reduction in weight. Founded in 1937, Vibram is an innovative outsole manufacturer that produces high-quality rubber that can be found on footwear worldwide. A waterproof GORE-TEX membrane surrounding these shoes provides a waterproof barrier to protect your feet from outside moisture while moving sweat away from the inside of the shoe. While the waterproof liner protects your feet from the elements, the durable, synthetic mesh outer provides an abrasion-resistant shell so you don’t have to worry about your feet getting wet or injured while hiking. The footbeds of the Breeze LT Low are anatomically designed to offer additional support and shock absorption.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING HIKING SHOES

TYPE OF HIKING

Terrain dictates the type of shoe one should choose when planning to purchase footwear. Hiking footwear is typically used for day outings while carrying lighter loads in a daypack. Rugged boots are usually overkill for day hikes and can prove to be hotter and heavier than shoes designed to be lighter and more breathable. Always ask yourself, what type of hiking do I plan to do? Will I be hiking on designated trails? Will I go off-trail and bushwhack through the woods and low brush? Will the terrain be rocky and wet or dry and flat (or any combination of the above)?

COST

Hiking shoes come in an array of styles and price points. In addition to the type of hiking you plan to do, you should also consider your budget. We’ve provided a broad selection of quality hiking shoes that are as varied as their costs. Some are more budget friendly while others will require a little more of an investment. Properly cleaning your hiking shoes can increase the lifespan of your footwear so you won’t have to purchase a new pair of shoes every year.

ANKLE SUPPORT

While hiking (versus backpacking) often involves carrying lighter weights, you should consider your individual needs in regards to ankle support. With hiking, you typically carry a daypack and just a few essentials for the hike. Unlike backpacking, this frees you up to choose from a wider range of hiking shoes versus heavier boots. If you know you have weak ankles and need additional ankle support, we have provided several over-the-ankle options on the list above. In general, ankle-height shoes provide little to no ankle support and this factor should be considered when deciding on which shoes are right for you.

HIKING SEASON

Hiking is a great year-round activity. With summer, the temperature rises, and having breathable footwear can be advantageous in preventing too much moisture retention. Pairing a breathable shoe with quality hiking socks can provide a symbiotic relationship that will provide the ideal balance for a long (or short) day on the trail.

However, as the weather begins to cool, it’s important to consider a shoe that will prevent moisture from entering from the outside of the shoe (like those containing GORE-TEX or other proprietary waterproof membranes). This feature will protect your feet should it rain or if you have to step in shallow creeks or puddles on the trail. These waterproof membranes also allow moisture created in the form of sweat to escape from the shoe, which helps to keep your feet warm and dry.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

OUTSOLE

The outsole is the outermost layer of a shoe that comes into contact with the ground. Rubber is used for all outsoles in hiking shoes.

INSOLE

An insole is the inside part of a shoe that makes direct contact with the bottom of the foot.

VIBRAM

Vibram was created by an Italian based company. They have been producing rubber outsoles for over eighty years. Though originally created for mountaineering, these soles are now used by numerous footwear manufacturers (including many in this roundup).

WATERPROOF LINING

Waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex (GTX) and proprietary fabrics used by Oboz, Merrell, and Keen (in this roundup) provide a barrier against water entering the footwear from the outside. These same fabrics also allow for moisture inside the shoe to escape through a breathable membrane layer.

LUGS

Lugs are raised bumps on the bottom of the outsole that provide traction on a variety of terrain. The pattern of the lugs on the bottom of the shoe can also work to provide traction under varied conditions.

  • Weight: 38 lbs 1.6 oz
  • Style: Sit-On-Top
  • Weight Capacity: 600 lbs

BEST FOR: PADDLING AND FISHING

This kayak is ideal for solo anglers. The Aquaglide Blackfoot Angler has all the perks of its hard-shell counterparts at a fraction of the weight. There are seven mounts all within arm’s reach that can be customized with rod holders and other accessories. The included fishing cooler also includes four built-in rod holders and secures directly to the boat.

To enhance the fishing experience, the Aquaglide features a rigid, hard bottom cockpit that makes it possible to stand in the kayak for easy casting. Additionally, the self-draining floor will eliminate any water that might enter the cockpit. This extra wide kayak is designed to increase stability so you can focus on your fishing game and not be concerned with balance.

Advanced Elements AirFusion EVO

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Capacity: 1
  • Length: 13’
  • Weight: 32 lbs
  • Style: Cockpit
  • Weight Capacity: 235 lbs
Features
  • V-Shaped Hull Provides Excellent Tracking
  • Rear Access Storage Hatch
  • Rubber Molded Handles

BEST FOR: VERSATILE PADDLING

Combining an array of materials, the Advanced Elements AirFusion utilizes polyurethane, aluminum, and pressurized air chambers to produce an inflatable kayak that performs like a hard-shell kayak. Aluminum frame poles create a rigid framework while the inflated chambers are covered with a synthetic shell.

The ‘V-shaped’ hull provides excellent tracking for enhanced speed on the water. Storage is achieved via a rear roll-top hatch. Additional gear can be secured using the D-ring tie downs. The cockpit accommodates a spray skirt for additional protection when paddling in adverse conditions. The rubber molded handles make transporting this award winning kayak to and from the water a breeze.

Advanced Elements Island Voyage 2

BEST FOR: FLATWATER PADDLING

This budget conscious option is ideal for 1-2 paddlers looking to enjoy some flatwater kayaking. Its lightweight and compact design makes it perfect for loading up and taking to the lake for the weekend, or you can easily take it with you on your next jetsetting adventure.

The highback seats are removable and have three positions in the cockpit for solo or tandem paddling. The seats also sport pockets for easily accessing essentials and bottle holders. Front and rear bungee deck lacing secures your gear for quick and easy access. While not self-draining, a rear drain plug does allow for easy draining and cleaning before storing.

Oru Kayak Haven

Specs
  • Type: Folding
  • Capacity: 2
  • Length: 16’
  • Weight: 40 lbs
  • Style: Cockpit
  • Weight Capacity: 500 lbs
Features
  • Easily Converts To A Single Seater
  • Folds Up To The Size Of A Large Suitcase
  • Integrated Track System Accommodates Accessories (Sold Separately)

BEST FOR: 1 OR 2-PERSON PADDLING ADVENTURES

When folded and secured, this kayak appears more like a large portfolio or suitcase. This uniquely designed tandem kayak unfolds and quickly deploys so you can spend more time on the water and less time fiddling with inflation. The material is rated for 20,000 fold cycles (so you can fold it in half for years on end!) and the ten-year ultraviolet (UV) treatment ensures durability and longevity.

This high-performance kayak easily converts to a single-seater with the switch of a few buckles. Switch it back for a tandem experience. The integrated track system (channel which accepts brand specific accessories) allows for accessories (purchased separately) like cup and fishing rod holders to be within easy reach as you paddle. The Oru is the longest kayak in this review and is designed for an array of paddling adventures.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A LIGHTWEIGHT KAYAK

STYLES

There are a plethora of options when it comes to kayaks. In addition to sit-on-top and cockpit (sit-in) models, there are also hard-shell, inflatable, and folding. For this review, we limited our selection to the folding and inflatable versions.

While there are some hard-shell kayaks that might fall into the lightweight category, they require an entirely different method of transporting them to and from the water. Unless you already own a truck, you will have to look at roof rack systems and that’s a whole other discussion. Inflatable and folding models are convenient for transporting and storing. They will fit into trunks of cars and into closets until your next outing.

Sit-on-top kayaks are easy to get in and out of. As the name implies, you are literally sitting on the top of the kayak. They are ideal for beginners as they are steady and don’t easily flip over. The downside to this type is that you are completely exposed to the sun, wind, and water.

Cockpit (or sit-inside) kayaks offer the paddler more protection from the elements. Most are compatible with spray skirts which will allow you to completely seal off the cockpit. The primary disadvantage to this type of kayak is that they’re harder to get back into in the event that you do flip the boat on the water. Another advantage is that you can extend your paddling season as your lower body is protected from the outside when utilizing a spray skirt.

SIZE

The size of the boat determines the number of paddlers it will accommodate. Solo paddlers only need one seat while tandem boats offer the opportunity for two paddlers to enjoy a day on the water. Size also includes the length and width of the kayak. In general, the longer the boat, the easier it will track in open water (lakes, oceans, and flatwater destinations). Wider boats tend to be more stable.

WEIGHT

This review is entirely focused on options that are lightweight. Therefore, weight is on the low side of what hard-shell kayaks can weigh. This is convenient when paddling solo and you are having to get your boat to and from the water by yourself. The average weight of the boats in this guide is 36 pounds. Many hardshell kayaks can easily weigh over 50 pounds and often require two people to manage transporting them to and from the water. Unlike the folding and inflatable boats in this review, hardshell kayaks also require a truck or vehicle with a rack system to transport.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HULL

The hull is the bottom of the kayak. The more defined the hull, the better it will track in the water and the faster the kayak will move.

STERN

The stern is the back of the kayak.

BOW

The bow is the front of the kayak.

MOUNT

The Aquaglide Blackfoot has a series of fixed mounts around the boat to accommodate brand accessories. The mounts allow for the accessories to be added after inflation and removed prior to deflating the boat and storing.

INTEGRATED TRACK SYSTEM

The Oru Kayak above comes equipped with an integrated track system. This is a brand specific channel that allows for the addition of accessories like fishing rod and drink holders.

STORAGE HATCH

A storage hatch is a compartment within the boat in which it is possible to store items. While some of these hatches may be waterproof or water-resistant, it is always recommended to place items that you desire to stay dry (spare clothes, phone, etc…) in a dry bag.

BUNGEE DECK LACING

The Advanced Elements Island Voyage has both front and rear bungee deck lacing. This is an elastic cord secured with fixed points on the deck of the kayak that allow the cords to stretch and store items that you might readily need while on the water.

COCKPIT

The cockpit is where you sit in the kayak. Sit-on-top kayaks do not have a defined cockpit but rather a slight depression where you sit. Kayaks with a defined cockpit will protect the paddler during inclement conditions.
