BEST BACKPACKING SLEEPING BAG OVERALL

The Western Mountaineering UltraLite is an ultra light and ultra premium backpacking sleeping bag that is our pick as the best overall choice.

What we love the most about this bag is its balance between weight, quality, versatility and comfort. It is rated to 20-degree and only weighs 17oz making it an excellent choice for fast and lite colder weather trips. The UltraLite’s horizontal baffle design allows you to move the feathers to the back of the bag, making it less warm for spring and mild summer conditions.

The biggest downside of the UltraLite is its price tag. At $525, it’s one of the priciest bags on our list. However, if you’re a true backpacking junkie who wants an all around awesome bag, it might be a worthy investment.

A close contender to the UltraLite is the Feathered Friends Hummingbird YF20 (and similar bags within their range). If you’re having trouble deciding, one feature we loved about the UltraLite that we didn’t find on others is the full goose down draft collar. This lets you bunker down and seal your body heat, a much appreciated feature on chilly nights.

Feathered Friends Hummingbird UL 20

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 14.6 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: 72 inches
  • Weight: 1.5 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 09.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 20 F
  • Fill Power: 950
Features
  • Trapezoidal footbox
  • Continuous baffles
  • 3D contoured hood
Feathered Friends Hummingbird UL 30

BEST ULTRALIGHT SLEEPING BAG

The Feathered Friends Hummingbird UL 20 is a super light and packable three season sleeping bag. It’s our pick for the best ultralight backpacking sleeping bag.

What we loved the most about the Hummingbird is the conservative, even borderline generous temperature rating. This is not something we could say about a lot of other ultralight bags out there. The Hummingbird is stuffed with 950+ goose down which makes it extremely warm and light.

One drawback of the Hummingbird is the fit is pretty snug. If you’re a side sleeper or a bigger guy or gal, you might find the narrow dimensions claustrophobic. If you toss and turn a lot and would prefer a more spacious bag, check out the Feathered Friends Swallow and Swift. Another downside is since Feathered Friends is a cottage manufacturer, stock can sometimes be limited and wait times can be long. If you love the idea of owning a handmade sleeping bag that is tailored to your needs, be sure to order well ahead of your next trip.

The Hummingbird UL is in close competition with Western Mountaineering’s UltraLite. which is also featured on this list. While both are excellent choices for serious backpackers, the Hummingbird is 5 ounces lighter, making it a winner for those who are meticulous about cutting weight.

The Hummingbird UL is also available in a 30-degree version.

Marmot Phase 20

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: Ripstop Nylon
  • Fill Weight: 16.3 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: Men’s: 6’6” Women’s: 6’0”
  • Weight: 1.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 08.9 L
  • Temp Rating: 29 F
  • Fill Power: 850
  • Compressed Volume: 6.45 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: 60in
Features
  • Internal Stash Pocket
  • Hood Drawcord
  • Down Defender Treatment To Improve Water Resistance

BEST FOR: A COZY AND WARM HOOD

Let’s start our rundown of the best 20 degree sleeping bags with the Phase 20 from Marmot. The 850-fill power down insulation provides consistently good warmth for those chillier camping nights. The hood furthermore includes a very handy drawcord, allowing you to cinch it snugly around your head to lock in the heat.

Marmot has also included an internal stash pocket to keep any items you need close at hand. For my part, I find it very useful to stash my phone at night if I’m listening to music and want to keep the cold air from draining the battery. The down defender treatment also helps keep any moisture from seeping in and wreaking havoc on your insulation.

While Marmot has certainly produced a beautiful sleeping bag in the Phase 20, it seems they tripped themselves over the zipper. The most common drawback we’re seeing across the board is a small and weak zipper that perpetually snags. So keep this in mind, and remember to handle that zipper with care if you commit to this sleeping bag.

The North Face The One

Specs
  • Material: 20D Nylon
  • Insulation: Down / Synthetic
  • Length: 85/78in
  • Weight: 3.7 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Compressed Volume: 17.5 to 9.1 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: 63/61in
Features
  • Modular Design Allows You To Adjust Insulation
  • Down Mid-Layer Unzips To Become Shawl Or Blanket
  • Excellent Price For Such Comprehensive Sleeping Comfort

BEST FOR: MODULAR SLEEPING BAG

Most of the grizzled hiking veterans out there have at least two sleeping bags, right? A light bag for warmer temps and a heavier one for the colder weather. Some folks will even have three or more bags! So how about a modular sleeping bag you can fine-tune to the temperature of your hiking adventures? Sounds amazing to us too, and that’s why The One Bag from The North Face made our list of the best 20 degree sleeping bags – even though it works for a range of temperatures.

This bag comes with a synthetic outer layer that is rated to 40 degrees alone. Add in the down mid layer with the synthetic bottom for 20 degree temperatures. Or combine the down midlayer with the synthetic top and bottom for 5 degrees. All these layers do add more bulk than a strictly down sleeping bag, however. The complete system clocks in at well over 3lbs and only packs down to 17 liters.

Bulk aside, this is still an excellent sleeping bag for those of you who don’t want to spend the money buying multiple sleeping bags for warm and chilly conditions. The One Bag allows you to consolidate down to a single sleeping for all your hiking trips, except extreme cold, and for a very reasonable price.

Western Mountaineering Alpinlite

Specs
  • Material: Nylon
  • Fill Weight: 19.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: 6’6”/6’0”/5’6”
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 12.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 20 F
  • Fill Power: 850
  • Compressed Volume: Approximately 12 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: 65/64/63in
Features
  • Extra Wide Shoulder Girth For Bigger Hikers
  • Very Comfortable And Warm Design
  • Made In The U.S.A

BEST FOR: HIKERS WHO WANT MORE SHOULDER ROOM

Don’t you hate trying to roll over in your sleeping bag and your shoulders seem to get wedged between the upper and lower layers? Us too, and that’s why the AlpinLite is among the best 20 degree sleeping bags. This bag is designed with you broad chested hikers in mind to make sure you can sleep in comfort on every single hiking trip.

We’ve found the 63” to 65” shoulder girth to give just about everyone plenty of room to snuggle in and find that sweet spot for optimal sleeping. All other features of the AlpinLite are near identical to Western Mountaineering’s UltraLite sleeping bag. This bag is very comfortable due to its 850-fill down insulation nestled in a soft nylon shell. And it’s even manufactured in the U.S.A.

As with most products from Western Mountaineering, the AlpinLite comes with quite the pricetag. But it’s premium build quality, comfortable materials, and very roomy design easily make this a worthwhile investment for you serious hikers out there.

Feathered Friends Spoonbill UL

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 23.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Volume: 17.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 20 F
  • Fill Power: 950
Features
  • Ergonomically designed hoods with separate draw cords
  • Integrated collar and hood for each user
  • Dual draft tubes
Feathered Friends Spoonbill UL Backpacking Sleeping Bag

BEST DOUBLE SLEEPING BAG

The Feathered Friends Spoonbill UL is a two-person sleeping bag for couples who want to lighten their load.

What we love the most about the Spoonbill UL is it gives couples the warmth and intimacy of being in the same bag without having to give up comfort. There are two hoods and two collars that can be adjusted and a zip on each side so you don’t have to worry about bothering your partner when you get in and out. Feathered Friends trimmed unnecessary insulation from the bottom part of the bag and the floor is made of a super lightweight Dyneema fabric. All of this results in a warm, lightweight and comfortable sleeping bag.

One of the downsides of the Spoonbill is it’s not great for couples who want to cuddle because of its two separate hoods. Another consideration is its price tag is pretty crazy, however if you consider the price of two premium sleeping bags, it might be worthwhile. It also loses major points when it comes to versatility. If one of you decides to go on a solo trip, you’ll need a different bag.

If the price tag puts you off, check out the Big Agnes Sentinel 30. It is a much more affordable double bag option.

Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: 40D Ripstop Nylon
  • Fill Weight: 25.0 oz
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Length: Men’s: 78”/72”, Women’s 72”/66”
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temperature: 32 F
  • Volume: 08.4 L
  • Temp Rating: 32 F
  • Fill Power: HL-ElixR
  • Compressed Volume: Men’s 8.4 Liters, Women’s 10.5 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: Men’s: 64/62in, Women’s: 58in
Features
  • Very Reasonable Price
  • Good Water/Moisture Resistance
  • Warm Enough For Most Hiking Trips

BEST FOR: BUDGET SYNTHETIC SLEEPING BAG

Synthetic insulation has been slowly retreating from the backpacking realm for some time, but it’s still a viable option for a budget hiker. The Trestles Elite Eco 20 is therefore our top synthetic recommendation for not breaking the bank but still hitting that 20 degree rating.

The proprietary HL-ElixR insulation resists moisture reasonably well, which is certainly a benefit in wet weather. It’s also plenty warm for the majority of your hiking adventures and is very comfortable to curl up in. The drawback to this synthetic insulation, however, is that it is heavier than down and won’t pack down as much for transport.

But we can’t argue with such a low price, and we definitely feel that the Trestles Elite Eco 20 is a great entry-level sleeping bag. Perfect if you plan on camping only intermittently, or aren’t ready to make a major investment quite yet.

Kelty Cosmic 20

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: 20D Nylon
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: Men’s: 6’6”/6’0”/5’6”, Women’s 5’8”
  • Weight: 2.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Compressed Volume: Men’s 13.1/12.2/9.8 L, Women’s 12.2 L
  • Shoulder Girth: Men’s: 64/62/58in, Women’s: 58in
Features
  • Excellent Price For A Down Sleeping Bag
  • Hydrophobic Down Treatment To Resist Moisture
  • External Stash Pocket

BEST FOR: BUDGET DOWN SLEEPING BAG OPTION

Finally! A down sleeping bag that doesn’t leave our bank accounts in tears. The Kelty Cosmic 20 provides all the essentials we need in backpacking sleeping bag at a very reasonable price, earning it a place amongst the best 20 degree sleeping bags.

The 600-fill power is definitely lower than most of the competition, but still manages to provide sufficient insulation in cooler temperatures. Kelty also includes a water repellent treatment to try and lockout as much moisture as possible and keep that down nice and fluffy. We’re also pleased with the external stash pocket to keep gear close, or store your favorite fuzzy sleeping socks when packing up in the morning.

Keep in mind that the lower price of the Cosmic comes at the expense of build quality and materials. While certainly functional, it lacks the premium feel and durability of the competition. So if you’re liking the low budget Cosmic option, be sure to take care of it!

Therm-a-Rest Hyperion

Specs
  • Material: 10D Nylon Ripstop
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: 6’6”/6’0”/5’6”
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Compressed Volume: 3.7 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: 58”/57”/55”
Features
  • Incredibly Lightweight
  • Packs Down To Almost Nothing
  • Very High Quality Down Fill

BEST FOR: LIGHTWEIGHT BACKPACKING

If you’re always struggling with your sleeping bag’s bulk or weight, then we highly recommend you consider the Hyperion 20 from Therm-a-Rest. This incredible sleeping bag weighs in at only 1lb 6oz. We know blankets and quilts that weigh more than that! What’s more, the Hyperion packs down to only 3.7 liters, taking up almost no room in your pack.

So how’d they do it? High-quality down for one. The 900-fill insulation is incredibly lofty for excellent warmth, yet very compressible and lightweight when it’s time to move. The majority of the insulation is also located on the top portion of the sleeping bag, with less behind your back. As much as this insulation distribution helps the weight, it does mean you should have a decently insulated sleeping pad to keep from getting cold.

Therm-a-Rest has also adopted a fairly narrow design that tapers significantly. This can be bad news for you side-sleepers out there as you may take the sleeping bag with you when you roll and expose the less insulated side to the air. But we understand that sacrifices have to be made to achieve such a lightweight design, and believe the Hyperion 20 may be every ultralight hiker’s dream.

Nemo Forte 20

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Material: 20D Nylon
  • Fill Weight: 29.0 oz
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Length: Men’s: 6’6”/6’0”, Women’s 6’0”/5’6”
  • Weight: 2.8 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Volume: 09.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 32 F
  • Fill Power: PrimaLoft
  • Compressed Volume: Men’s 10 /9.3 Liters, Women’s 13.1/11.8 Liters
  • Shoulder Girth: Men’s: 66/64in, Women’s: 64/62in
Features
  • Very Roomy Design For Side-Sleepers
  • Moisture Resistant Synthetic Insulation
  • ‘Heat Gills’ For Temperature Regulation

BEST FOR: SIDE-SLEEPING HIKERS

I count myself amongst the side-sleeping crew, and I know the struggle. Constantly pulling the sleeping bag every which way while getting comfortable. But the Nemo Forte and Viola offer a very compelling solution at a reasonable price!

Both sleeping bags – the Forte for men and Viola for women – feature a unique spoon-shaped design that’s wider at the elbows and knees. This means you can naturally sleep on your side with your arms and legs bent, and not get caught on the wall of your sleeping bag. The sleeping bag also includes Nemo’s interesting heat gills, allowing you to dump excess heat without getting a cold draft.

As with any synthetic sleeping bag, we must cope with more weight and less compressibility. This is nevertheless an excellent option for side-sleepers who yearn for a comfortable night’s sleep on the trail.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING THE BEST 20 DEGREE SLEEPING BAGS

DOWN VS SYNTHETIC

It’s an age-old question in the hiking sleeping bag debate, so let’s cover the pros and cons of each. Down has earned its stripes as the backpacking material of choice thanks to its excellent insulating properties yet very low weight. It also compresses down very well to take up minimal space in your back pack. Its two classic drawbacks are moisture and price.

Down will start to clump up almost immediately when it gets wet, effectively eliminating its insulating capability. Many manufacturers have implemented different down treatments in order to combat this problem, with varying degrees of success. Down is also much more expensive than synthetic materials. However, the price of some down sleeping bags has been creeping lower over the years, putting them on par with a synthetic bag. Just remember that cheaper down sleeping bags typically sacrifice quality and features.

As you may have guessed, synthetic is the opposite of down. The cheaper price and greater resistance to water are the main draws to this insulation. But keep in mind that synthetic material is significantly heavier and much bulkier than down, making it a tough sell in the backpacking field. But synthetic sleeping bags definitely have a place amongst beginner hikers or those on a budget.

SIZING

It’s so easy to simply eyeball a sleeping bag online or in the store and think: ‘yup, that’s definitely big enough.’ Hold up, take a breath, and take a good look at the sizing chart!

Every single manufacturer has a slightly different sizing scheme for their sleeping bags. The common variables are height, shoulders, and hips; and they all fluctuate from bag to bag. We therefore highly recommend that you take the time to properly size yourself, and pick out a sleeping bag that’s guaranteed to fit you comfortably.

Or better yet, go to a gear store on a free afternoon and actually jump into the sleeping bag you’re thinking about. I know, it may seem weird climbing into a sleeping bag in the middle of a store, but there’s no better way to gauge the size.

WEIGHT

If you’re looking for a sleeping bag with hiking or backpacking in mind, then you’d be wise to consider the bag’s weight. The heavier the sleeping bag, the more your overall pack weight. But the lighter your sleeping bag, the less space and insulation you have. So consider your priorities, and choose accordingly.

Remember, down is typically much lighter than synthetic materials, and will likely be your insulation of choice if weight is a concern. Ultralight sleeping bags will typically fall in the 1-2lbs range, whereas mid-range options will be 2-3lbs. Anything heavier than 3lbs may be a little hefty for weight conscience hikers and merit reconsideration.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DOWN FILL POWER

Every single down sleeping bag on our list is accompanied by a fill-power number, ranging from 600 to 900. The exact definition is that the fill power number represents the number of cubic inches that one ounce of the down type takes up. But what does that mean for your warmth?

The higher that number, the greater the down’s insulating power. But the story doesn’t quite end there. Your warmth is also dependent on the sleeping bag’s fill weight, or simply the measurement of how much down the manufacturer stuffs in. This value is oftentimes listed, but sometimes not, so take note if it’s there! Outside Magazine has published a very informative article on all things down with more specific information if you wish.

TEMPERATURE RATING

All the sleeping bags on our list are rated to 20 degrees – with the sole exception of the Sea To Summit Flame whose 25 degree rating is balanced by a 14 degree EN rating. The majority of sleeping also have their manufacturer’s rating plus an EN value. But why are there two ratings in the first place, and what do they mean?

First of all, understand this: The published temperature rating without an EN designation is simply the manufacturer’s estimate of the temperature at which the bag will keep you warm, and has not been independently tested. These estimates are therefore highly subjective and are hard to gauge as everyone has different levels of warm comfort.

Enter EN 13537. This is a European testing standard that was introduced to level the playing field and ensure that sleeping bags are comparable. Many – but not all – sleeping bags will therefore feature an EN Comfort Rating and an EN Lower Limit Rating. The comfort rating refers to the tested temperature at which a cold sleeper will stay comfortable – usually found on women’s sleeping bags. The Lower Limit rating refers to the temperature at which a warm sleeper will stay comfortable – usually assigned to men’s sleeping bags.

The manufacturer’s rating will typically plop right in-between the EN comfort and limit ratings, but not always. So if the manufacturer has published EN ratings, take a look and make the most informed decision possible. Take a look at this article from REI for more temperature rating information.

COMPRESSED VOLUME

This value – measured in liters – refers to the volume of your sleeping bag when it’s compressed as much as possible. Some sleeping bags come with their own compression sacks for achieving this ‘packed’ volume, while others require you to purchase this separately.

The smaller this value, the less space the sleeping bag is going to take up in your bag. Down once again jumps to the head of the pack in this herd as it features superior compressibility when compared to synthetic insulation.

Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF Backpacking Sleeping Bag

BEST WINTER BACKPACKING SLEEPING BAG

The Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF is a four season sleeping bag that was designed for backpackers who want to brave extreme conditions in comfort.

While there are plenty of excellent winter sleeping bags out there, the Kodiak MF is our top choice because it is seriously warm and comfortable. While other bags are equally as toasty, they have a narrower fit that makes them constricting. When it is cold out, we tend to spend more time inside our bags and appreciate the extra room. The Kodiak MF adds a few inches in the shoulders and is generously packed with down making it super lofty. The spaciousness also gives you the option to stuff in an extra quilt if you need to add some warmth. Considering how warm this bag is, it packs down incredibly well.

If you’re just getting into backpacking the price tag might seem ridiculous but for serious backpackers who value high end gear, it’s a worthy investment. Also, like with all proper winter sleeping bags, the versatility of the Kodiak is limited. It would be way too warm for summer backpacking trips and overkill in mild Spring weather.

The Kodiak MF is also available in a 6 foot and 7 foot version.

Feathered Friends Egret UL 20

BEST SLEEPING BAG FOR WOMEN

The Feathered Friends Egret UL 20 is a high quality three season sleeping bag that is specifically designed for female backpackers.

What we love the most about this sleeping bag is its attention to detail and female tailored fit. There is extra fill around the chest and in the foot box, two areas where women lose more heat than men. Its 950+ fill is super fluffy and toasty, making it a great option for spring to fall camping. When it comes to quality, weight, packability and warmth, the Egret beats all the other female specific bags, which is why it’s our pick for the best women’s backpacking sleeping bag.

The biggest drawback is the price, but for this level of comfort and quality, we believe it is worth it considering it has an excellent warmth to weight ratio. Another complaint is the sizing isn’t right for everyone. The Egret comes in two sizes: 5’3” and 5’9”, if you’re somewhere right in between, say 5’6”, you might find the 5’9” option too long. This extra space traps cold air, making the bag feel colder overall. And, the 5’3” option would be too tight to have the hood fit over your head comfortably. If this might be an issue for you, you can check out the unisex version of this bag, called the Swallow which has a 20-degree and 30-degree option.

The Egret UL is also available in a 30-degree version.

Big Agnes Sidewinder SL 20 Backpacking Sleeping Bag

BEST SLEEPING BAG FOR SIDE SLEEPERS

The Big Agnes Sidewinder SL20 is spacious enough to be a game changer for side sleepers but it doesn’t trap cold air as much as other wide options.

What we love the most about the Sidewinder SL20 is that it’s one of the only bags on this list that is truly built for side sleepers. The zipper and the hood face the side. The insulation and shape are all geared toward those who roll over. There is a mesh pocket for your pillow that keeps it in place. There is extra padding at the hip and feet, which are two pressure points for those who tend to flip from side-to-side several times throughout the night. There is plenty of room to curl your knees up without feeling constricted as you might in a mummy bag.

One complaint we have with this bag is the zipper catches if you aren’t careful despite having an “anti snag zipper”. Maybe we were too rough with it but this could be annoying if you have to get up in the middle of the night. Also, people with wide feet might find the toe box a bit tight.

The Nemo Disco 15, which is also featured on this list is a close competitor to the Big Agnes Sidewinder SL 20. The Sidewinder gains points on weight (it’s 7 ounces lighter), but it is not as roomy as the Disco. The extra inches on the shoulders and hips are nice but you also have to consider that it’s not the best design for retaining warmth.

The Big Agnes Sidewinder SL 20 also comes in a women’s version.

Marmot Trestles 0

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 41.2 oz
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 30.9 L
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
  • Fill Power: HL-ElixR
Features
  • Low Weight And Small Packed Size
  • Extra Warm
  • Full Length Two-Way Zipper

BEST BUDGET WINTER SLEEPING BAG

The Marmot Trestles 0 is a real find for hikers wishing to explore cold environments. With a durable SpiraFil synthetic insulation, the sleeping bag will keep you warm at temperatures as low as 1.9°F. A 3D hood will provide warmth and comfort for your head; you can also cinch it tightly around your face during freezing nights. Another great feature of the Marmot Trestles is the foot box, which ensures extra comfort and warmth where it’s most needed.

The Trestles 0 has a full-length, two-way zipper built to prevent snagging. There is also a fold-down second zipper that provides fresh ventilation. In case you need anything during the night, there is an external stash pocket for your essentials. Additionally, the bag has two hang loops for storing or drying out the bag.

With The North Face Inferno, you never have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep to cold, uneven ground. If you don’t have a mattress with you, no worries – this sleeping bag includes extra water-resistant padding between you and the ground. Since the bag compresses to about the size of a basketball, you may have to leave the sleeping pad behind anyhow.

Marmot Never Summer

If hiking is in your bones, your love of the sport doesn’t magically end in the winter. Well, thankfully sporting goods manufacturers see your obsession and raise you the gear to match it. The Marmot Never Summer, for example, voids the idea of “stepping out of your comfort zone” with your very own comfort zone.

The sleeping bag makes you feel more like you’re sitting on a rug in front of the fireplace than resting in sub-freezing temperatures. Your entire head will be covered by the hood of this bag and you can even put heating packs in the foot pockets, because it’s impossible to fall asleep with cold feet. Plus, it’s a lot easier to face tomorrow’s summit after getting a good night’s rest tonight.

Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 Backpacking Sleeping Bag

The Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 is a minimalist ultralight quilt that is quickly becoming a favorite of long distance hikers.

What we love the most about the Enigma is its round foot box that is sewn shut. This design gives you more foot room while trapping in heat. This makes it a good option for backpackers who are transitioning from using a traditional sleeping bag to using a quilt. All of Enlightened Equipment’s quilts are hand sewn and the quality is top notch. They overfill their quilts by 30% so instead of stuffing them to the minimum amount needed to fill the bag, they pack in extra down to help with any loss in loft due to moisture or dirt. Thru hikers who plan to use this thing for weeks on end without washing it will appreciate this consideration.

Quilts do come with some drawbacks and the Enigma is no exception. Since it is just like a big blanket, it doesn’t have a hood so you’ll want to wear a beanie or down jacket on chilly nights. It also doesn’t have a back so it can be tricky to fully seal up the quilt in cold conditions.

Enlightened Equipment is a cottage manufacturer based in Minnesota. All of their quilts are highly customizable, which is a great option for thru hikers who really want to have their gear dialed in. It can take over a month for a custom quilt to arrive but luckily, EE does have stock options for those who just want a standard option and don’t have time to wait for a custom quilt to arrive.

The Enigma is available in 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 degree versions.

Nemo Sonic

Specs
  • Type: Mummy
  • Material: Nylon
  • Fill Weight: 40.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 3.5 lbs
  • Volume: 13.4 L
  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Temp Rating: -20 F
  • Fill Power: 800
Features
  • Overstuffed With Down To Give You A Cushy Night’s Sleep
  • Water-resistant Down And Water-repellent Shell Keep Condensation Out
  • Draft Tube And Collar Allow You To Breathe Without Losing Heat
  • Stretchy Knees And Extra Foot Room Allow You To Sleep On Your Side
  • Contoured, Drawcord Hood Keeps Head Heat From Escaping

Most mummy sleeping bags are designed primarily for back sleeping, but not everyone can sleep on their backs. Side sleepers unite with this plush sleeping bag! Extra stretch across the knees and generous foot room accommodate restless legs.

With the Nemo Sonic you can get good sleep at normally-uncomfortable temperatures too. The overstuffed down feels like a giant pillow and warms like a toaster. If you start to feel a little too toasty, you can open up the breathable “gills” to let excess heat escape without letting chilly drafts in. This sleeping bag gets all technical, which you can take comfort in as a beginner.

Mountain Equipment Iceline

If it’s good enough for technical mountaineering, the Mountain Equipment Iceline will get you through a thru-hike in extreme conditions too. All the details about the features, specialty shell fabric, and lab-tested warmth get a little technical, but all you need to know is you’re getting the best of the best as far as winter sleeping bags go. The company also has programs in place to ensure animal welfare and humane workplace conditions. A lot of heart accompanies their brainpower.

If you appreciate the finer things in life, this quality, well-constructed mummy suit definitely meets your criteria. Never again will you be able to experience raw nature in its most extreme form in total comfort without this beast of a winter sleeping bag.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST WINTER SLEEPING BAGS

TEMPERATURE RATING

The temperature rating of your sleeping bag could be a matter of life or death. If your sleeping bag is rated for 0 F and you experience a -35 F night, your life could be in danger. Make sure your sleeping bag is rated for the coldest possible temperatures where you’re hiking so you’re covered. If you plan to hike in warmer winter climates or return to a heated camp, you may not need quite as extreme temperature ratings.

LENGTH

It’s important to pay attention to the length of your sleeping bag to determine if it will accommodate your body height. You won’t fit in a sleeping bag that’s too short and if you go too big, you leave too much space open to heat with your body. Check the manufacturer’s height recommendations before choosing a sleeping bag size.

WEIGHT

If you need to carry the sleeping bag on your back for multiple days, then you know minimizing the weight of your pack is vital. However, you have to expect extra weight for a decent sub-zero sleeping bag. Most of the bags on this list are in the 3+ lb range, which may require some gear adjustments.

WATER RESISTANCE

Most of the best winter sleeping bags on this list are either water resistant or waterproof. You’ll most likely sleep inside a tent on a sleeping pad, so you won’t have direct contact with snow. However, your body heat can create considerable condensation, so it’s imperative that your sleeping bag doesn’t soak up the condensation. If you’re sleeping in a climate-controlled environment, then water resistance may not matter as much.

HEAD COVERAGE

If it’s -35 F outside, not even a little bit of your skin can be exposed to the air. However, you still need to be able to breathe. Most sub-zero sleeping bags have mummy-style hoods with some type of vented tunnel to allow you to breathe without letting heat escape. Drawcord hoods let you pull the bag even closer to shut out drafts. Make sure your sleeping bag provides adequate coverage to prevent frostbite, or worse.

PRICE

The differences between a $150 and a $900 sleeping bag are vast. The quality is evident in the feel and the features provided. Depending on what you need, you may be able to get away with a less expensive model or require every technical feature of the higher end models. Maybe you land somewhere in between. The colder, more technical the hike you plan on attempting, the higher the price you should expect to pay.

SLEEP STYLE

Are you a stomach, back, or side sleeper? Do you tend to move around a lot in your sleep? Do you get claustrophobic in confined spaces? All of these factors are important when choosing a winter sleeping bag. Mummy style bags work best for back sleeping but can oftentimes be used on your side. Mummy bags also tend to fit closely in order to keep you warm. Your sleep might be affected if you’re a stomach sleeper, you feel claustrophobic, or you have restless legs.

For even more insight, read How to Choose a Sleeping Bag for Backpacking.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Ripstop nylon

Ripstop nylon is a form of nylon with a heavy-duty, reinforced weave in a crosshatch pattern. This weaving style makes the nylon extra durable and resistant to tears.

Mummy style

Like you might guess, a mummy style sleeping bag wraps closely around the body, including the head. Mummy style bags hold body heat in better and tend to take up less surface area, so they’re lighter.

Tunnel/draft tube

A tunnel or draft tube refers to the hole inside the hood of the sleeping bag that you breathe out of. Tunnels tend to have a flap or vented screen over the top to keep cold air from getting inside.

Footbox

The area of the sleeping bag dedicated to your feet is the footbox. If you have large feet or plan to wear boots to bed, the size of the footbox is an important feature to consider. Check out this visual showing the anatomy of a sleeping bag.

Shell

The exterior layer of fabric on a sleeping bag is called the shell. The shell is in direct contact with the world around you, so it’s important that it keeps out what you don’t want (wind and water) and keeps in what you do (body heat).

Reviews - The Best Water Filters for Backpacking

Katadyn BeFree

Specs
  • Weight: 2.3 oz
  • Filter Action: Squeeze
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa, Bacteria, & Viruses
Features
  • Collapsible Water Bottle is Easy to Pack When Not in Use
  • Simple to Clean by Shaking or Swishing
  • Cap Keeps Drink Nozzle Clean

BEST FOR: PORTABILITY

Combining a water filter with a collapsible bottle, the Katadyn BeFree is an extremely portable system that you can carry with you on the trail or squish down to fit in your pack. Filling the BeFree is as simple as dunking it in a water source, and then sipping fresh clean water through the filter. You can also use it to fill other water bottles if you need more volume.

Although the Katadyn BeFree is easy to stow and throw in a pack, the collapsible bottle is not the most durable, so you should be a bit careful when using it and putting it away with a bunch of other gear.

MSR Trail Base

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb 0.3 oz
  • Filter Action: Gravity/Squeeze
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa & Bacteria
Features
  • Includes Both a Gravity and Squeeze Filter System
  • 3-in-1 Cap Makes It Easy to Fill, Pour, and Drink
  • Can Fill From Lots of Water Sources With Hand Pump or Bag

BEST FOR: VARIETY OF ADVENTURES

The MSR Trail Base combines a gravity filter with the MSR TrailShot pump filter, so you can use it for large groups at base camp or take the TrailShot with you on solo or smaller adventures. The gravity system is set up using the TrailShot as the filter and provides up to 4L of water quickly.

As might be expected, the MSR Trail Base is quite heavy, so it isn’t ideal to take the whole system if you’re out on your own. However, because you can use the TrailShot on its own, having the Trail Base in your gear closet gives you a great option for any kind of adventure.

Sawyer Squeeze

Specs
  • Weight: 3 oz
  • Filter Action: Straw/Squeeze
  • Removes/Eliminates: Particulates, bacteria, protozoa
Features
  • Built-in push/pull cap
  • Fills most water bottles in only 30 sec
  • Includes Inline Adapters for use with a hydration pack
Sawyer Squeeze

BEST FOR: ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKERS

While chemical water treatment tablets may be lighter in weight, this squeeze-style filter weighs in at just three ounces and unlike chemical alternatives, won’t leave your water tasting funny. Sawyer designed the Squeeze with efficiency in mind. It treats one liter of water in 40 seconds via a hollow fiber filter that’s effective against particulates, bacteria, and protozoa. It’s a versatile product that can function as either a squeeze filter or in-line filter for a water bottle or hydration reservoir.”

What we like most about the Sawyer Squeeze — other than its light weight — is that it’s one of the most time-tested designs on the market.

Aquamira Water Treatment Drops

Specs
  • Weight: 1 oz.
  • Filter Action: Chlorine dioxide
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa, bacteria, viruses
Features
  • Includes part A and part B drops that you mix together before adding to water
  • Chlorine dioxide is iodine and chlorine free
  • Does not discolor water or give it an unpleasant taste
  • Small size and long shelf life
Aquamira Water Treatment Drops

BEST FOR BUDGET BACKPACKING

When price is your biggest consideration, water treatment drops are hands down the most affordable way to filter your water.

Aquamira’s water treatment system includes two different components and bottles — part A and part B. The liquid chlorine dioxide solution is effective against protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. The purifying process involves mixing 7 drops of solution from each bottle, letting it sit for five minutes, then adding it to 1L of water at a time. After 15 minutes you have clean water to drink.

What we like most about the Aquamira Water Treatment Drops — other than its affordable cost — is how reliable it is compared to water filters with moving components that are prone to breaking or malfunctioning over time.

Specs
  • Weight: 2.5 oz
  • Filter Action: Gravity
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa and Bacteria
Features
  • Engineered for high-flow, easy drinking
  • 2-stage filtration
  • Combination of hollow-fiber technology and activated carbon is effective against bacteria, protozoa and particulate
MSR’s Thru-Link

BEST IN-LINE OPTION FOR PAIRING WITH A HYDRATION RESERVOIR

If you consistently hike with a water reservoir, an in-line filtration option is by far the most convenient way to go. The MSR Thru-Link In-Line style water filter attaches directly to the hose of your water bladder, filtering as you go. It boasts an impressive flow rate of 1.5 liters per minute and a filter life of about 1000 liters.

What we like most about the MSR In-Line Water Filter is that it doubles as a gravity-style system for pump-free filtration when you’re settled at camp.

Sawyer Micro Squeeze

Specs
  • Weight: 2.5 oz
  • Filter Action: Straw/Squeeze
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa & Bacteria
Features
  • Can Drink Directly From Water Source with Straw Attachment
  • Attaches to Hydration Pack Tube and Some Water Bottles
  • Included Drinking Pouch

BEST FOR: HYDRATING ON THE MOVE

If you’re out on a solo backpacking trip and want your water on the go, the Sawyer Micro Squeeze is the perfect backpacking water filter to keep in your pack. The Micro Squeeze filters water quickly, although its ideal use is for one person. You can use the included straw to drink directly from a water source if you need immediate hydration, or you can fill the included 32oz drinking pouch and drink from that. The filter can also attach to standard size water bottle threads as well as to your hydration pouch, so it is quite adaptable.

The Sawyer Micro Squeeze can be prone to clogging, especially if you’re filtering water with a lot of sediment. A syringe is included to wash out the filter after each use, and it is a good idea to bring it with you on a multiple day trip.

LifeStraw Universal Bottle Adapter

Specs
  • Weight: 3.7 oz
  • Filter Action: Straw
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa & Bacteria
Features
  • Interchangeable Caps & Mouthpieces to Fit a Range of Water Bottles
  • Carbon Filter Improves Taste of Water
  • Comes with a Carry Bag

BEST FOR: COMPATIBILITY WITH WATER BOTTLES

The Lifestraw Universal water filter turns your own water bottles into a source of fresh and clean water. The Lifestraw kit comes with two sizes of caps and two different mouthpieces, so it works with just about any water bottle that is tall enough to fit the Lifestraw. Once you attach the cap, mouthpiece, and LifeStraw itself, you simply drink out of the bottle, so you’re good to go as you hike.

One concern with the LifeStraw is that the straw filter can be prone to getting disconnected from the cap, so you’ll want to check and make sure it is securely in place before drinking from it (especially if your water bottle is not translucent so you can’t keep an eye on it).

Platypus GravityWorks

Specs
  • Weight: Protozoa & Bacteria
  • Filter Action: Gravity
  • Removes/Eliminates: 11.5 oz
Features
  • Filters Up to 4 Liters of Water in a Few Minutes
  • Shutoff Control Valve to Easily Fill Bottles & Other Containers
  • Antimicrobial Treatment Keeps Water Reservoirs Clean

BEST FOR: GROUP CAMPING

When you’re backpacking and camping with a group, the Platypus GravityWorks system is a great choice to filter a lot of water quickly. You can easily fill the designated dirty water reservoir with untreated water, then simply hang it above the clean water reservoir, and gravity does the work of passing the water through the filter between them, giving you 4 liters of filtered water in just a few minutes. You then can fill water bottles, pots, and other containers from the clean water reservoir without spilling thanks to a shutoff control valve.

The Platypus GravityWorks does best with deeper water sources, such as lakes or rivers, since you need to be able to scoop up the water with the dirty reservoir.

MSR TrailShot

Specs
  • Weight: 5.2 oz
  • Filter Action: Squeeze
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa & Bacteria
Features
  • Easy to Clean in the Field with No Tools Required
  • Can Drink Straight from Water Source
  • Simple to Set Up and Use

BEST FOR: COMPACTNESS

Though you’ll probably stow it in your pack most of the time, the MSR Trailshot is small enough to fit in your pocket and is very lightweight. It also is extremely simple to use – with the included tube, you can drink straight from a water source or pump from the source into a water bottle or hydration pack to take with you as you head down the trail. The Trailshot doesn’t require any setup or have any extra parts that you might lose or forget.

While the MSR Trailshot offers simplicity, the pump can tire your hand out over time, so if you need lots of water or are on a long trip, it might not be your best choice.

Katadyn Hiker Pro

Specs
  • Weight: 11 oz
  • Filter Action: Pump
  • Removes/Eliminates: Protozoa & Bacteria
Features
  • Can Directly Connect to Hydration Reservoirs
  • Comes with Carry Sack and Bottle Adapter
  • Included Field Maintenance Kit to Keep Filter Running Smoothly

BEST FOR: SHALLOW WATER

The Katadyn Hiker Pro is a standard pump filter that requires some manual labor to get your water but works well, especially in areas without high flowing water. Thanks to its long intake tube, you can access shallow pools and small crevasses of water very easily. A clear container lets you see when the filter needs cleaning or replacement. The Katadyn Hiker Pro comes with a field maintenance kit for when it does need cleaning, and you’ll probably have to use that a lot when filtering silty water.

The Hiker Pro comes with a carry bag to stow all the elements of the kit, including a bottle adapter. Though it is a reliable and simple filter, it does run on the heavy side, so a solo backpacker should look for a lighter option.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BACKPACKING WATER FILTERS

Water filtration is one of the most important considerations on a backpacking trip. If you get dehydrated, it could at the very least make your hiking miserable, and if you’re way out in the backcountry and run out of water, it could be life-threatening. But if you drink contaminated water, you could get extremely sick, so not filtering your water is really not an option. REI explains the basics of filtering water and the different methods to do so. Depending on your needs, different factors will affect your choice of the right backpacking water filter for you.

WHAT IT REMOVES

Most water filters remove both protozoa and bacteria, which is what is important when you’re in the backcountry in the United States. However, if you often travel internationally, you’ll want a filter that also removes viruses, which are more common to find abroad. Also, some filters use activated charcoal to improve the taste of the water, if that is a concern for you.

SPEED OF FILTERING

When you’re thirsty, you want water right away, so it’s key to consider the speed of your water filter. With a straw filter, you can drink directly from a water source, but it won’t be as useful if you’re with a group. A hand pump requires you to work for your water, while a gravity system gives you a lot of water quickly without much hands-on action. Additionally, some filters handle sediment-filled water well, while others slow or stop if there is too much silt.

WEIGHT

The weight of your gear is always a consideration when you’re backpacking, and water filters are no exception. If you’re traveling solo and want to keep things super light, look for a small squeeze filter or perhaps the SteriPen. However, if you’re heading out to the backcountry in a group and need water at your basecamp, it’s worth the extra weight to bring a gravity system that can supply you with a large volume of water for everyone.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Allows you to drink directly from a water source.

GRAVITY FILTER

Hanging hydration bags with a filter in between doesn’t require manual pumping or squeezing.

When you’re out in the backcountry, there’s nothing better than wrapping up in one of the best synthetic sleeping bags money can buy after a long day of trekking in the mountains. Oftentimes, sleeping under the stars in a nice, warm bag is what hikers look forward to most.

A synthetic sleeping bag is a reliable and eco-friendly choice for your nights spent outside. Synthetic bags mean that they are stuffed with material that wasn’t derived from animals, and oftentimes the fabric these bags are shelled with is eco-friendly, too.

There are some benefits to synthetic sleeping bags like a hood, dual zipper systems, and loft (think cushiness, like a big, fluffy blanket!). But what factors are most important to you?

That’s up to you to figure out, but The Adventure Junkies broke down the ten best synthetic sleeping bags to help you start your search. Whether you’re looking for something lightweight or something that will keep you warm in temperatures down to 0 degrees F, we’ve got what you’re looking for here.

Reviews - The Best Synthetic Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Nemo Forte 35

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.1 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
Features
  • 80% postconsumer recycled content.
  • Unique Spoon™ shaped bags offer more room at the elbows and knees, allowing side sleepers to shift positions comfortably throughout the night.
  • Waterproof/breathable foot-box withstands tent condensation, keeping feet warm and dry.
Nemo Forte 35 Summer Sleeping Bag

The Nemo Forte 35 is an affordable synthetic sleeping bag that has plenty of room for those who love to sprawl out. This bag is a great option for mild weather adventures where you don’t have to travel too far to get to your campsite.

What we love the most about this bag is its spacious dimensions. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a narrow mummy bag, you’ll love the Forte’s hourglass shape that is wider at the shoulders and feet and slightly tapered at the hips. This design is perfect for side sleepers or people who tend to move around a lot at night. We also loved what NEMO calls thermo gills, they are zips that let the insulation spread apart which is great for warm summer nights.

The biggest drawback of this bag is its weight and pack size. At 2lbs 2 oz, it’s not the best choice for long distance backpacking but is manageable for overnight trips. The Forte uses Primaloft synthetic insulation which has its pros and cons. It doesn’t pack down as small as down but it is far more affordable.

If you love the idea of this bag but wish it had down insulation, check out the Nemo Disco line

This sleeping bag also comes in a 20 degree version.

The Nemo Forte also comes in a women’s specific version in both 20 degree and 35 degree versions.

Marmot Trestles 0

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
  • Shell: Polyester
  • Stuff Sack Size: 9.5 x 21 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Fitted Hood Provides Warmth
  • External Stash Pocket Stores Your Valuables
  • Zipper Guard Prevents Bag From Snagging While Zipping And Unzipping
  • Vaulted Footbox Provides Warmth

The Marmot Trestles 0 sleeping bag is a great option for someone looking for a bag that will keep them warm in frigid temperatures, but doesn’t want to break the bank to invest in an expensive cold weather bag.

This bag is rated to keep you warm in temperatures down to 0°F, so it’s a great bag to take with you to the Cascades in Washington or the Sierra Nevadas in California. The bag itself will keep you toasty and cozy and the hood of the bag will provide extra heat for you.

This bag is made with quality material, including a zipper guard to make sure it won’t snag on your bag when you’re zipping it up. A 3D foodbox at the bottom provides warmth, and will also keep you comfortable by providing enough space at your feet so you won’t feel like you’re sardined into a bag.

This bag is a bit heavy, with the regular size weighing in at about 4 ½ lbs, but it sells at a killer price point. It can be hard to find a reliable backpacking sleeping bag for under $150 and, which is why this is a great option for hikers on a budget.

Therm-a-Rest Space Cowboy 45

Specs
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 52 F
Features
  • Snag Free Zipper
  • Highly Compressible
  • Cinchable Hood For Increased Warmth

The Therm-a-Rest Space Cowboy 45 is one of the very few sleeping bags with water-resistant synthetic filling. This allows it to increase insulation – even when wet –  while decreasing weight. However, it is designed for summer camping, as it withstands only 45°F. The bag features ThermaCapture zoned insulation that is strategically placed to catch your body’s own rising heat. You can also cinch the hood down around your head for a snuggly, draft-free rest.

To increase versatility, this sleeping bag has loops that you can use to layer more quilts and blankets on it, making it useful in colder conditions. The zipper is snag-free to ensure its durability and ease of use. The Cowboy 45 weighs 1.5 lbs. – average for ultralight sleeping bags – but it can be compressed down to 2 liters of volume, saving lots of valuable space in your backpack.

Marmot Nanowave 45

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 56 F
Features
  • Draft tube keeps cold air from seeping through zipper
  • Zipper wraps around foot box
  • Synthetic insulation traps warmth even when wet
Marmot Nanowave Summer Sleeping Bag

The Marmot Nanowave 45 is an affordable summer sleeping bag that won’t take up too much room in your backpack. Not only is it cheap, it’s also practical and functional.

In awarding it the winner of the best under $100 category, we realize it’s not quite fair because most other bags on this list have a temperature rating down to around 20 degrees. However, if you’re on a super tight budget and plan to camp from mid-spring to mid-fall, the Nanowave 45 is hard to beat.

Which leads us to the biggest downside of this bag, it is only good in mild weather. But, not everyone needs or wants a super warm bag and if you combine the Nanowave with an extra warm sleeping pad and a thermal liner, you might be able to extend the temperature range of this bag down a few degrees, making it much more versatile. If you’re looking for a warmer budget backpacking sleeping bag, check out the REI Trailbreak 20.

The Marmot Nanowave is also available in a 55-degree and 35-degree version.

REI Co-op Trailbreak 20

  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 12.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 29 F
  • Fill Power: Polyester
Features
  • Water-resistant synthetic fill
  • 3-panel hood
  • Stuff sack included
REI Trailbreak 20 Backpacking Sleeping Bag

The REI Co-op Trailbreak 20 is a budget minded synthetic sleeping bag that was designed for people who are just starting out backpacking.

Just because this bag is a steal doesn’t doesn’t mean that it is cheap. While the Trailbreak 20 is nowhere near as light, comfortable or packable as the bags at the top of our list, we have to give it credit for being an exceptional value. Its size and weight is manageable for short backpacking trips.

The cash savings do come with some drawbacks. The lining fabric is a bit rough making it much less comfortable than the silky fabric found on many other bags. Also, it doesn’t have a neck baffle, so some heat does escape through the top of the bag. One last nitpick, the Trailbreak doesn’t come with a compression sack, so you’ll need to calculate that into your decision. If you’re on a tight budget and just can’t spring for a better sleeping bag right now, this is a good option to get you out on the trail fast.

Looking for a summer sleeping bag? The REI Trailbreak is also available in a 30-degree version.

The REI Trailbreak comes in a women’s specific which is available as a 20-degree or 30-degree bag

The North Face Cat’s Meow 22

Specs
  • Weight: 2.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 31 F
  • Shell: Ripstop Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: 9 x 16 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Fitted Hood Provides Warmth
  • No-Draft Collar Prevents Heat Loss
  • Vaulted Footbox Provides Warmth
The North Face Cat's Meow 22

The North Face Cat’s Meow is a great option for someone who tends to venture into the outdoors in the spring/summer seasons.

The shell of this bag is made with ripstop nylon, which is a tougher fabric than polyester or just plain nylon, and will ensure your bag won’t shed on you in rocky terrain when you might be camping under the stars instead of inside your tent.

A fitted hood will provide warmth and can serve as extra cushioning for your head when you lay it down to sleep. There is also a draft collar that will provide extra heat and will prevent heat loss throughout the night.

This bag isn’t going to be the warmest option featured by The Adventure Junkies, so if you know you sleep cold, or you like to hike in the fall/winter season and are looking for a bag to keep you warm at high alpine levels, this may not be the bag for you.

The North Face One Bag

Specs
  • Insulation: Down / Synthetic
  • Weight: 3.7 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-Rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 29 F
  • Shell: Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: N/A
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Three Bags In One Means You’ll Always Be Prepared, No Matter The Weather
  • Non-snag Zippers Make It Easy To Transition Between Configurations
  • Bottom Layer Rolls Up Into A Pillow If You Don’t Need The Added Warmth

A great bag for any season, The North Face One Bag Sleeping Bag will keep you warm in just about any temperature you can imagine sleeping in down to 5° F. Although there is technically a down layer included in this 3-in-1 bag, we still think the synthetic outer layer makes this one of the best synthetic bag choices on the market today.

This bag has easy-to-use zippers, so configuring the bags just the way you want them will be a breeze. For mild summer nights, you can opt to use only the super lightweight 40° F outer layer on its own. If there’s a chill in the air, you can pair the blue outer layer with the removable yellow mid-layer and stay warm down to 20°F. And if you’re an extreme camper who loves sleeping outside during the wintertime, then use all three bags for warmth in temperatures down to 5°F!

This is certainly the most versatile bag on the list and it’s very popular among both car campers and backpackers because it just about meets all your wilderness sleeping needs!

Exped MegaSleep 25

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 25 F
  • Shell: Ripstop Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: 22 x 12 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left/Right
Features
  • Zippers On Both Sides Of Bag Makes It Easy To Get In And Out And Control Temperature
  • Draft Tube Along Zipper Prevents Heat Loss
  • Quick-Drying Insulation Means You Won’t Need To Worry If This Bag Gets Wet

The Exped MegaSleep 25 Sleeping Bag is a versatile option for anyone who likes to camp or backpack.

Weighing in at about 2 ½ pounds, this bag isn’t too heavy for a pack, and won’t take up too much space either. The bag has zippers down both sides, so you can get in and out of it easily, and adjust the temperature easily according to your preference.

This bag is a rectangle shape, so you will have plenty of room to spread out, no matter what your favorite sleeping position is. There is a draft tube along both zippers in this bag that will help prevent heat loss and keep you cocooned into your bag at night.

Tested to keep you warm down to 25° F, this bag is a great option for spring, summer, or fall camping or backpacking.

Big Agnes Lost Dog 15

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 3.1 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
Features
  • Spacious Footbox
  • Includes Mesh And Nylon Storage Sack
  • Two Way Zipper
  • Can Be Attached To Another Right-Zip Sleeping Bag

The Big Agnes Lost Dog is a cold-oriented sleeping bag that withstands temperatures up to 15°F. It uses FireLine ECO synthetic insulation made from recycled polyester, and the innovative design includes several features for comfort. It has a Free Range hood that allows you to lift your head while keeping a snug fit around your face. The Free Range foot box is similar, giving you some wiggle room. An additional no-draft collar will keep the cold wind out.

For convenience, a Flex Pad Sleeve can stretch over an insulated sleeping pad for extra warmth. The bag also has a 2-way anti-snag zipper and can be joined with another right-zip sleeping bag. If that doesn’t sound comfy enough, the Lost Dog offers a Pillow Barn feature that makes sure your pillow stays put all night. Although it is on the pricier end of affordable, the extra features make it worth it.

Sea to Summit Trailhead ThII 30

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
Features
  • Extra Spacious
  • Second Zipper In Footbox
  • Full Length Zipper To Convert Sleeping Bag Into A Quilt

The Sea to Summit Trailhead ThII 30 is another synthetic sleeping bag that retains its insulation abilities even when wet. It uses a unique WaveLoft technique that tangles filling fibers for maximum heat retention up to 30°F. This bag has a tapered rectangular shape, providing you with comfort and room to move. An oversized anti-snag zipper draft tube will guard your whole body against cold chills when you snuggle down in this bag.

An important characteristic of the THII 30 is its versatility. Its full-length zipper lets you turn this sleeping bag into a quilt. Furthermore, there is a second zipper in the foot box, allowing ventilation for your feet and broad temperature adjustability. Plus, to prevent your frustration, the bag’s lining fabric is directly attached to the shell fabric, which prevents zipper tangles.  This sleeping bag is excellent for backpacking since it weighs about 2.5 lbs – not much more than most ultralight sleeping bags!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST SYNTHETIC SLEEPING BAGS

PRICE

One of the best things about buying a synthetic sleeping bag is that it won’t break the bank the way a down sleeping bag would. You can find a reliable synthetic sleeping bag at a very reasonable price for $100 or less.

Sleeping bags that are a higher cost than this probably have more features than others. For example, they might have a double size zipper, ventilation options, or a hood. Define what features are most important to you and think about how much you can afford to invest in your sleep system, and go from there.

TEMPERATURE RATING

The synthetic sleeping bags that will keep you warm in colder temperatures are usually going to weigh more than those that aren’t. But if you’re going to be trekking in alpine heights, or you’re into mountaineering, getting a bag with a proper temperature rating could mean the difference between life and hypothermia.

The temperature rating is arguably the most important thing to consider when buying a sleeping bag. Know where you’re planning to camp and figure out what the temperature there will be like, and take into consideration that the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature. Then choose a bag that is rated to keep you warm in temperatures at least 10° F below the coldest temperature you’re expecting to sleep in.

Check out this article from REI for more info about how to pick a sleeping bag temperature.

WEIGHT

One of the drawbacks to a synthetic sleeping bag is that they tend to be fairly heavy. They are heavier than down sleeping bags, but much more affordable, and you can still find a middle ground between weight, warmth, and cost.

Knowing the weight of the other items in your pack will help you decide how heavy of a bag you can buy. Determine your base weight. This is the weight of everything in your pack minus food and water. Then, add everything up minus your sleeping bag. This should give you a target of what to look for.

A sleeping bag is one of the most important items you can put in your pack, so make sure to give it a decent allotment in the weight game.

SHELL FABRIC

Ripstop nylon is the strongest of shell fabric featured in this article. This material is tough and durable and will last you for ages.

Nylon is also a great option, as it’s a durable lightweight fabric. Polyester is the third shell fabric featured in this article, and it’s still a durable option, but a little bit heavier than nylon.

All in all, don’t get too caught up about the shell fabric of your sleeping bag unless you’re going to be hiking in really rugged terrain or tend to camp under the stars where your bag could suffer from shredding on rocks or branches.

SIZE

Most sleeping bags are tailored to fit a 6 foot hiker or smaller. If you like your bag to be a bit roomier, then a long size would be a better option for you.

If you’re shorter than 5 foot, it might be a good idea to get a short bag – save yourself weight and space in your pack!

Rectangular shaped bags will offer more room for moving around while you’re sleeping, so if you know you’re an active sleeper, you should consider a rectangular or semi-rectangular shaped bag. Mummy bags are going to be more lightweight, but are more restrictive for sleeping options.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Mummy

The mummy style is one of the most popular designs for backpacking sleeping bags. This design follows the shape of your body. The bag is wider around your shoulders and head, and slimmer towards your legs and feet.

The mummy style is most comfortable for hikers who sleep on either their backs or their stomachs. They are also the warmest option available in terms of sleeping bag shape.

Fitted hood

A fitted hood is a huge plus for a synthetic sleeping bag. It will give your head some loft and warmth and can help serve as a pillow bank. I mean, who doesn’t want a warm fluffy hood covering their head while they sleep?

Some of the hoods on the synthetic bags featured in this article have a drawstring cord. With them, you can tighten the hood to your preference of fit.

External stash pocket

An external stash pocket on a synthetic sleeping bag is a pocket on the exterior of the bag for added gear storage.

Vaulted footbox

A vaulted footbox is a part of the bag that encapsulates your feet. It provides loft underneath them to keep them warm. It also helps blood flow evenly while you’re sleeping. After a long day of trekking in the mountains, you don’t want to have to worry about the comfortability of your feet. A vaulted footbox is a sure thing for comfort.

No draft collar

A no draft collar in a synthetic sleeping bag is an extra layer of material that’s been added around the neck portion of the bag to prevent heat from escaping and to not let cold air in.

Semi rectangular

The semi-rectangular shape of a synthetic sleeping bag is a mix between a rectangular shape and a mummy bag. It offers a little more room for those who are active sleepers without taking up too much space in your pack.

Liner loops

Liner loops are featured in a couple of the synthetic sleeping bags in this article. These are internal loops inside the sleeping bag that you can tie your sleeping bag liner to to prevent it from falling down while you’re sleeping.

If you’re an active sleeper and you find your sleeping bag liner often at the bottom of your bag when you wake up, these would be a huge plus. If you don’t sleep with a liner, they could be unnecessary.

Check out this article for more info about the benefits of sleeping bag liners.

Sleeping pad sleeve

A sleeping pad sleeve is an extra layer of material that’s attached to the bottom of a synthetic sleeping bag that can hold your sleeping pad. This assures that your sleeping pad won’t move about while you’re sleeping, and will prevent you from rolling off.

You can also unzip one side like a standard sleeping bag, half unzip the top layer if you need extra ventilation, or unzip just the foot-box if your feet start to sweat.

The Sea to Summit Ascent ACIII is designed with vertical baffles on the torso, which keep the insulation in place inside the bag and prevents cold spots. The semi-rectangular shape also provides a bit more room than a mummy-style bag, so you can sleep comfortably.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST 0 DEGREE SLEEPING BAGS

Although temperature ratings of sleeping bags are standardized, it can still be confusing to understand in what conditions a 0 degree sleeping bag will keep you warm. Your entire sleeping setup (clothing, sleeping pad, tent) can affect how warm and comfortable you’ll actually feel at night, and, of course, each person’s body regulates temperature a little differently. REI put together a guide explaining how sleeping bag temperature ratings work.

Down fill power differs between 0 degree sleeping bags and makes a difference in both weight and warmth. But what exactly does it mean? Basically, it describes the quality of the down. A higher number provides better insulation (but is not necessarily warmer) and is usually much more expensive. This article from REI goes into more detail about down fill power.

BAG SHAPE

Many 0 degree sleeping bags are mummy-shaped, which means they fit tight to the body. This offers extra warmth while also cutting weight since it eliminates extra fabric and insulation. However, mummy bags can feel quite restrictive since you don’t have much room to move.

Semi-rectangular bags give you a little more space so you’re more comfortable when you sleep. These bags might weigh slightly more, but if they are well-designed, they should still be able to keep you warm.

ZIPPERS

Most sleeping bags have full-length zippers on just one side, so if you have a preference due to your dominant hand or the side of your tent the door is on, try to choose a bag that won’t frustrate you with a zipper on the wrong side.

Many 0 degree sleeping bags also have a second partial zipper to give you extra ventilation. Some even have zippers at the feet or can unzip fully to lay flat if you need a blanket.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Baffles

Fabric separators that keep down insulation in place.

Draft tube

A tube filled with insulation that backs the length of the zipper to block cold from entering.

Draft collar

An insulation-filled collar to provide extra warmth at the neck.

REI Co-op Siesta 30

Specs
  • Fill Weight: Polyester Fibers
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs
  • Temp Rating: 25 F
  • Shell: Polyester Taffeta
  • Insulation Type: Synthetic
  • Zipper Location: Right
Features
  • Quilt Construction Prevents Cold Spots And Stabilizes The Insulation
  • Left Side Zipper Lets You Fold Down The Top For A Bedlike Feel
  • Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Finish Repels Moisture And Stains

Even though a sleeping bag is expected to be a bit cramped and tight, to ensure maximum warmth potential is maintained, surely we can wish for a bag with a little bit of wiggle room too? Look no further than the REI Co-op Siesta 25 sleeping bag. This sleeping bag has enough components to meet any needs you may have, including a two-way main zipper, which allows you to unzip the bottom to let your feet have some air if it’s getting a bit too stuffy for your liking.

A shorter zipper on the other side of the bag allows you to fold down the top of the sleeping bag, giving you a bed-like feel. The polyester outside of the bag has been treated with a water resistant agent, so you don’t have to worry if your bag gets a bit damp on your camping trip.

Sea to Summit Traverse TvII 25

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.4 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 27 F
Features
  • Very Comfortable And Spacious
  • Lightweight Compression Bag
  • Can Be Used As A Comforter

The Sea to Summit Traverse TvII 25 has a tapered rectangular shape and uses the WaveLoft construction for increased comfort. However, the Traverse TVII 25 has a more expanded range of features. It can withstand temperatures as low as 25°F, allowing you to explore slightly colder environments. And an oversized, anti-snag zipper and a neck draft tube provide exceptional resistance to chilly mountain breezes.

A Free Flow zipper system in this bag comes with three features that let you customize your temperature. A full-length main side zipper, a half-length opposite side zipper, and a foot zipper all provide you with unrestricted movement and ventilation. As a bonus, the TVII 25 can be zipped up with another bag. This versatility makes up for its higher price, delivering you your money’s worth.

The North Face Dolomite One Duo

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 9.4 lbs
  • Shape: Rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
Features
  • Roomy, rectangular shape provides maximum comfort and easily fits 2 people.
  • Interior watch pocket on each layer.
  • Wraparound zipper lets you fully open the bag so it lies flat.
The North Face Dolomite One Duo Summer Sleeping Bag

The North Face Dolomite One Duo is a 3-in-1 layering system that is great for couples who plan to camp in a variety of seasons.

The Dolomite One Duo uses a top layer and mid layer that lets you stack and interchange the two to give you warmth over a wide range of temperatures. The top layer has a 50°F warmth rating and the mid layer has a 30°F warmth rating. When the two layers are paired together you get a 15°F bag. The zippering system lets you have three separate layers, which is nice if you tend to over heat on warm nights or want to use one layer as a blanket around the campfire. It has a roomy, rectangular shape that gives couples plenty of room to move around.

While this is one of the best 3-in-1 systems we’ve come across, it does have some downsides. The Dolomite One Duo does a bit of everything but doesn’t excel at one category. While it’s not the lightest, warmest, or cheapest two person bag, it is a great option for couples who want a versatile sleep set up they can use while camping and backpacking as well as car camping and RVing.

This bag is also available in a one person version.

Big Agnes King Solomon 15

Specs
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 4.3 lbs
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
Features
  • Flex Pad Sleeve attaches to your pad like a fitted bed sheet.
  • Pillow Barn keeps your pillow tucked in tight all night.
  • Mesh storage sack and nylon stuff sack included.
Big Agnes King Solomon 15 Double Sleeping Bag

The Big Agnes King Solomon 15 is a roomy doublewide sleeping bag that is perfect for couples who are tired of zipping two bags together.

What we love the most about this bag is how warm and cozy it is. Big Agnes claims it’s like your own bed in the backcountry and we have to agree. We also appreciated the well thought out design of the King Solomon 15. It has vertical baffles that help keep the insulation in place instead of bulking up on one side. It also has a pad sleeve on the bottom to prevent your sleeping pads from slipping out from underneath you and your partner in the middle of the night.

One of the downsides to an extra spacious bag like this one is it tends to trap a lot of dead air making it not as warm as a snug bag. If you tend to get cold at night, consider adding a thermal liner. Another nitpick with this bag doesn’t work well with narrow sleeping pads, so if you decide to go for the King Solomon, you might want to consider getting a double pad as well.

If you’re looking for a summer double sleeping bag, check out the Big Agnes Sentinel 30. It has a lot of the same features as the King Solomon but isn’t as toasty.

Klymit KSB Double

Specs
  • Insulation: Down / Synthetic
  • Weight: 5.0 lbs
  • Temp Rating: 30 F
Features
  • Durable DWR treated outer.
  • 4-way zipper lets you shed the top layer on extremely warm nights.
  • Includes two individual pad holders.
Klymit KSB Double Sleeping Bag

The Klymit KSB Double is a two person three season sleeping bag that is a great choice for couples who like to cuddle.

What we liked the most about the KSB double is it’s two-part system that lets you fully unzip the bag to create a comforter. We found this really handy for warmer nights and car camping. The top layer uses a 650 fill duck down and bottom uses synthetic insulation. This helps cut the overall cost of the bag, but does make it slightly more heavy and bulkier. We appreciated the individual draft covers and hoods, which let us control how much ventilation we wanted. There are two zippers, one on each side so you don’t have to bother your partner when you want to get in or out of the bag.

The KSB Double is rated to 30 degrees, but it might not live up to that rating for all sleepers, especially women. This is a common issue with double sleeping bags because they aren’t nearly as warm as a single mummy style bag. Unless your partner is as warm as an electric blanket, you might want to bring a thermal liner for camping on chilly nights. When it comes to price, the KSB Double is a bit more expensive than similar double bags out there. It’s also quite heavy, weighing in at 4 pounds, 11 ounces, which makes this bag best suited for shorter adventures, car camping or mule assisted trekking.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST RECTANGULAR SLEEPING BAGS

TEMPERATURE RATING

The first thing to consider when buying a sleeping bag is in what conditions you will be using it in. The temperature rating of a sleeping bag will determine how comfortable you’ll be able to sleep in different temperatures, so it’s an important thing to consider before making your purchase.

Summer sleeping bags with a rating of 37°F and up provide the minimum amount of insulation for warmer climates. They are normally lightweight and easily packable, but not ideal in wet or cold environments.

Three-season sleeping bags with a rating between 20°F and 32°F are versatile and suited for traveling in spring and autumn as well as summer. This category of sleeping bags usually offers more features than simple summer bags. These can be hoods and draft tubes to fight the cooler temperatures of the high mountains.

Winter sleeping bags have a rating of less than 20°F and are designed to protect you from the cold in the most frigid environments, including snow. Because of the added layer of insulation, they tend to be heavier and occupy more space in your backpack. However, if you plan to camp in alpine environments, they are an essential piece of equipment you can’t avoid taking with you.

INSULATION TYPE

Sleeping bags can be made with synthetic insulation or down insulation. The first category are usually cheaper and continue to offer protection against the cold even when wet, since synthetic fibers do not absorb water from either rain or moisture.

Down insulation is made from duck or goose feathers. On top of being lightweight and highly compressible, it offers more effective protection against the cold. The downside of down sleeping bags is that they do not absorb water and tend to cost more than those with synthetic fill.

WEIGHT

If you are planning to hike for long distances with all your gear on your shoulders, the weight of the sleeping bag is something that should definitely be checked before buying. Ultra-lightweight sleeping bags are designed for thru-hiking and backpacking, however, the convenience of carrying a small amount of weight usually comes at a high price.

The weight of a sleeping bag often depends on the amount and type of insulating material. Down sleeping bags are lighter than synthetic bags, and summer sleeping bags are lighter than three-season and winter bags.

PACKED VOLUME

The amount of space a bag will occupy in your backpack is important. A lightweight sleeping bag isn’t necessarily also compressible, so make sure you know the volume of the bag when it is packed down. Volume is measured in liters. If you want to reduce bulk to a minimum, you should look for a sleeping bag that doesn’t occupy more than three liters of space.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Draft tube

A component of the sleeping bag that runs along with the zippers and is filled with insulating material, designed to prevent cold air from entering the bag while you are sleeping.

Hydrophobic

A water-repellent material.

Duck or goose down

The soft plumage of ducks or geese, used as the insulating material in sleeping bags to protect you against the cold.

Synthetic insulation

Polyester fibers used in sleeping bags to insulate the interior against cold air. Synthetic materials do not absorb water and are usually cheaper than down.

Sleeping bag shell

The outer layer of a sleeping bag, normally built of water-repellent nylon.

BEST 4-SEASON BACKPACKING TENT

If you consider other tents on this list as shelters, The North Face VE 25 is a bunker. It’s a part of The North Face Summit Series which is designed for extreme conditions and is tested by their athletes. While it would be considered overkill for most popular hiking destinations, it’s an excellent choice for extreme conditions.

We loved how well the VE 25 holds up in serious weather. We’re talking loads of snow, ice, wind, and rain. It’s the kind of tent that will save your butt in harsh winter conditions and that’s why it’s our choice for the best 4-season option. It’s extremely liveable which is a big plus for those tent bound days. The inner tent has good tension so it doesn’t flap in the wind. It also has great ventilation, the roof can zip open which provides some airflow.

The biggest downside is it is really big and really heavy, but that comes with this type of expedition tent. Its performance in high winds could be better. Over 50 mph, the tent starts to struggle. The back of the tent is so broad that it really takes a beating. It’s difficult to set up and take down in these high wind conditions. This is a common disadvantage of high volume tents.

If you tend to camp in windy conditions, take a look at the Hilleberg Nallo 2 that is also featured on this list.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear UltaMid 2

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 4P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 63.0 sq ft
  • Weight: 1 lbs 07 oz
  • Season: 4-Season
Features
  • Outstanding Durability
  • Exceptional Quality
  • Super Lightweight
  • Incredibly Roomy

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 is a super light backpacking tent that weighs just over a pound. Unlike many other ultralight options, it doesn’t sacrifice interior space to cut weight. It’s a great option for any long distance adventure where your tent becomes your home for weeks, months, or maybe even years.

What we love the most about this tent is its spaciousness. It feels like the palace of light backpacking tents. It has a tepee, pyramid shape and is set up by placing two attached trekking poles in the middle of the tent. This makes it super roomy and gives you a ton of headroom, a thru-hiker or bikepackers dream. If you’re camping with friends, be aware that your tent will most likely become the hangout space. The construction and design of the Ultamid 2 is top notch and well thought out. It’s made of DCF (Dyneema composite fabric) which is super strong and has no stretch to it so it won’t sag like nylon when it gets wet.

All this spaciousness comes at a cost and not just when it comes to cash. The footprint of this thing is huge so you need a campsite that is large enough to be able to pitch it. If you plan to camp in the desert or in open plains it shouldn’t be an issue but it can make it impossible to use in dense woods or forests. Another bummer is the pole support in the middle means no morning cuddles with your partner.

Want an even bigger tent? Hyperlite also makes a 4-person version of the Ultamid.

The North Face Mountain 25

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P
  • Doors: 2
  • Floor Area: 32.3 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: Yes
  • Weight: 9 lbs 13 oz
  • Packed Size: 24 x 7 Inches
  • Peak Height: N/A
  • Packed Weight: 9 lbs. 13 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 4
  • Vestibule Area: 8 Square Feet in front, 3 Square Feet in Back
Features
  • Glow in the Dark, Color-Coded Zippers
  • Rainfly Has Welded Reinforcements and a Port Window
  • Multiple Vents Prevent Condensation From Building Up Inside The Tent
  • Dual Entry Front Vestibule For Easy In/Out

The North Face Mountain 25 is a sturdy four season shelter option with features that ensure a dry and warm night throughout Mother Nature’s worst storm.

This tent is designed for the ease of the mountaineer using it. It comes with color coded and reflective zippers, to help you with the setup and so you can find it in the dark. The front of the tent has a large, 8 square foot vestibule, roomy enough for all your gear. The vestibule also has dual entry, making it easy to get in and out of.

This shelter comes with a small window, so you can peek outside at the freshly fallen snow as you wake up. The window has been cold-crack tested, and is foolproof to -60° F. This tent includes the footprint.

This tent can be a little difficult to setup the first couple of times, so make sure you give it a trial run or two before you hit the high alpine.

Hilleberg Nallo 2

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P / 4P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 28.0 sq ft
  • Weight: 5 lbs 05 oz
  • Season: 4-Season
Features
  • Very lightweight
  • Tunnel construction
  • Separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching

The Hilleberg Nallo 2 is a tunnel tent that was designed for high winds and tough conditions.

What we love about this tent is how well it balances strength and weight. It’s tough enough to handle storms and powerful winds. The pole sleeves can fit an extra set of poles, which makes the tent much stronger. Also, the fly goes all the way to the ground, which prevents splashback and draft.

The biggest downside of the Nallo is it underperforms when it comes to heavy snow loading. If you get caught in a snowstorm, either you’d need to get out (or convince your hiking partner to get out) and knock snow off the roof and vestibule to prevent the poles from bending.

If you’re looking for a tent that can handle extreme winter conditions, have a look at The North Face VE25, which is also featured on this list.

Nemo Kunai

Nemo Kunai backpacking tent

The Nemo Kunai is a 4-season tent that was designed for short and light mountaineering trips.

What we love about the Kunai is it’s only 4 pounds, which is light for a 4-season winter tent. It has a double wall construction, so the inner isn’t mesh, it’s fully lined. So basically it’s like having two tents. This design is great for insulation and strength. The Kunai can handle extreme weather from strong winds to snowstorms.

The double wall is great for staying warm and dry but we were concerned about the airflow and condensation. The large vents on the inner tent worked great at keeping the tent ventilated in cool weather. It would be way too warm for summer camping, but that’s not what it’s built for.

The Nemo Kunai also comes in a 3-person model.

Marmot Thor 2P

  • Peak Height: 44 Inches
  • Packed Weight: 10 lbs. 7 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 6
  • Vestibule Area: 10 Square Feet
Features
  • Seamed Taped Rainfly and Floor
  • Vents For Maximum Airflow To Prevent Condensation Inside The Tent
  • Near Vertical Walls Provide Extra Space
  • Design Allows for Various Pitch Setups Depending On Your Needs

The Marmot Thor 2P is a 4-season shelter that is spacious and durable.

Meant for trekking at alpine levels, this tent will keep you dry in a storm. The rainfly of this tent is seam sealed and provides two large vestibules on either side of the tent, enough coverage for you and your partner. The rainfly also has two vents, to help prevent condensation inside your vestibule when it’s dumping outside.

The pole design of Marmot’s Thor creates vertical walls inside the tent, creating a spacious interior for you and your partner. This tent also has several storage pockets inside of the tent for all your belongings.

This tent offers different pitching setups. For a more minimalist hiker, you can set the tent up using the rainfly, poles, and footprint. Although when using the tent in the winter, you will likely want the warmth the tent can provide with a full body set up.

Whatever your outdoor gig is, this tent is a versatile, reliable, year-round option.

The Marmot Thor also comes in a 3-person version.

Black Diamond Firstlight 3P

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 33.0 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: No
  • Weight: 4 lbs 01 oz
  • Packed Size: 7 x 9 Inches
  • Peak Height: 44 Inches
  • Packed Weight: 4 lbs. 1 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 2
  • Vestibule Area: N/A
Features
  • Ultralight
  • Zippered Mesh Panels Provide Ventilation
  • Internal Mesh Pockets
  • Featherlite Poles

The Black Diamond FirstLight is a great option for the ultralight hiker who frequents alpine heights often.

This tent weighs about four pounds and is a quality shelter for rain, snow, hail, or any other stormy weather conditions Mother Nature is sending your way. It will keep you warm and dry and it will be light on your back.

That being said, there are some features you will miss on this tent that other tents in this article have. This tent doesn’t come with a large vestibule for gear storage, so whatever gear you have with you will either have to be waterproof, or will have to be inside your tent with you.

Due to the lack of vestibule space, the 3-person version of this tent is a better option for a hiker duo and all their gear, whereas three people and all of their gear would be a very tight squeeze. This shelter does have two internal mesh pockets, which will help with gear storage.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FOUR SEASON TENT

FABRIC

Several of the tents in this article are pieced together with nylon (or ripstop nylon – a tougher version of nylon that prevents shredding), polyester, or another kind of fabric that is specific to the brand.

Different fabrics offer different weights and toughness. Nylon may be lighter than polyester, but it will rip more easily, unless it’s ripstop nylon, which is an expensive fabric. Finding the right balance between price, weight, and durability is a bit of a chore, but you’ll thank yourself later when it’s storming outside and you have a durable and solid shelter.

In addition, many of the fabrics are treated with some type of waterproofing technique, such as a silicone treatment. This is a huge benefit because it adds to your tent’s ability to withstand rain, which is often unexpected in the backcountry.

FEATURES

Four season tents can get quite fancy with their designs. And who doesn’t like all the cool features a shelter can offer?

A large vestibule is a great feature for a four season tent, where you’ll likely be carrying more gear than you usually would. A spacious floor area is a great benefit, because you can stretch out without feeling cramped.

But with every feature you add, you are also adding weight to your back, meaning the tent will be heavier to carry up the mountain you’re climbing.

Decide which features are most important to you and go from there. Is it important to you for your tent to have a window? Or do you prefer a tent with two doors, because your partner will be with you, and you don’t want to have to crawl over them to get outside?

Answering these questions is your first step to deciding which four season tent is best for you. Check out this guide by REI to learn more about what features four season tents have.

LONGEVITY

A four season tent is an investment, so it’s important that this tent will last you many years. There are steps that you can take to make sure your tent will last you a long time.

Making sure your tent is clean of debris when you’re packing it up is a great first step, and folding and rolling the tent into your pack is always a better option than stuffing it in your backpack.

Buying a footprint for your tent will also help prolong the life of your tent. Many of the tents featured in this article either include a footprint or one is available but sold separately.

Because you will likely be camping in the wintertime with a four season tent, check out this article by REI about winter camping basics.

SPACE

Companies normally measure the space of a tent in two ways: the square footage of the floor area, and the space offered by a vestibule (if your tent has one).

How many people you plan to fit into your tent will depend how you use this space.

If your tent has a vestibule, that’s a great spot for gear storage. If not, you have to consider that your gear will either need to be completely waterproof, or it will be inside your tent with you.

Everyone likes to have a palace for a tent, but extra space can add the most weight to a tent. Figure out what gear and who will be in the tent with you, and go from there.

WEIGHT

Possibly the most important feature of picking a four season tent is the weight.

Four season tents are heavier than three season tents for obvious reasons. They are made of waterproof material, often have more poles to withstand strong winds and storms. They also tend to include other features that make your tent bombproof in a storm.

With these features comes a heavier weight, but some of the time it’s worth it. Decide which features you can’t live without, then target a tent that has those, and nothing more.

VENTILATION

Several of the tents featured in this article come with vents and awnings that will bring air into your tent and help you not feel stuffy inside. It’s essential that your tent has some mode of ventilation when camping in the cold because otherwise all of your hot breath will build up condensation inside the tent and actually make you colder rather than warmer.

Some tents also come with mesh panels that you can open up to let the air in. Both are great options for a ventilation system.

PRICE

A four season tent is definitely an investment. You will likely be spending over $400 for your tent, which isn’t cheap.

Make sure when you make your purchase that the tent is exactly what you’re looking for, and make certain you’re willing to take care of the tent for years to come. A shelter is arguably the most important piece of gear you can carry with you, so you’re likely going to be spending a pretty penny.

FEATURES EXPLAINED ABOUT THE BEST FOUR SEASON TENTS

Vestibule

A vestibule is an exterior chamber of your tent that you can use for gear storage. It usually doesn’t have a floor, but it is typically waterproof. Therefore, it’s a safe place to stash your gear while you’re hunkering down during a storm.

Vestibules come in several shapes and sizes, some are larger than others, but they are a great thing to have, so you don’t have to store your gear inside your tent with you.

Footprint

A footprint is a ground layer for your tent. Footprints are often sold separately, but they sometimes come with the tent. The footprint that comes with your tent is usually your best option. This is because their shape is the same as your tent and can align with the grommet. You can also use any groundsheet as a footprint

A footprint will help elongate the life of your tent.

Seam taped

When a tent is seam taped it means that all of the seams of your tent have been reinforced with a waterproof material to ensure waterproofing.

Vents/awnings

Vents are used to help let the air in your tent to negate a stuffy environment while you’re inside your tent. Just as you open the windows in your home sometimes, a vent can offer the same benefit for your home away from home.

Awnings help rain stay directly off the top of your tent, and can curb the rain in a direction that will help prevent water atop your tent.

Both are beneficial for comfortability and waterproofing.

Port window

A port window is a small, usually rubber window built into the vestibule or outer layer of your tent. It’s your window to look outside in the morning and see what kind of conditions you’re in for that day.

This isn’t a necessary feature, but it’s pretty cool.

Welded reinforcements

These are areas where there is double the fabric, to ensure that when tension is applied to this area of the tent, it won’t rip or shred. Welded reinforcements on the tents featured in this article are in the corners of the tent.

Marmot Sawtooth 15

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 21.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 2.5 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 07.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 27 F
  • Fill Power: 650
  • Shell Material: 20-Denier Mini Ripstop Nylon
Features
  • Warm
  • Comfortable
  • Internal Stash Pocket

The Marmot Sawtooth is a quality down sleeping bag that incorporates a healthy mix of warmth and water protection given the price. With a comfort rating of 27.1 degrees F, the Marmot Sawtooth will keep you warm on most 3-season backpacking trips.

For peace of mind when moisture strikes, this down sleeping bag not only incorporates water-repellent down but a durable water-repellent shell as well. The drawcord collar is a nice touch to help cinch this bag down and block out the cold. Should you find temperatures to be colder than expected, stuff a heat packet into the heat pocket at the bottom of the bag and keep your toes nice and toasty.

Kelty Cosmic 20

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fill Weight: 16.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Length: 72 inches
  • Weight: 2.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 09.2 L
  • Temp Rating: 32 F
  • Stuff Sack Size: 8 x 13 inches
  • Fill Power: 550
Features
  • 550-fill down
  • C0 and PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) coating
  • Internal zippered stash pocket
Kelty Cosmic 20

The Kelty Cosmic 20 is a budget minded down sleeping back that is a great option for new backpackers who don’t mind carrying a bit of extra weight and bulk to save some cash.

What we love the most about this bag is its overall value. The Cosmic’s quality and warmth are great considering how inexpensive it is. Of course, you can’t compare the build and material quality of the Cosmic to the top of the line bags on this list but it is practical and comfortable enough, making it tough competition for other budget options.

The biggest downside of the Cosmic is it is much more heavy and bulky than other backpacking sleeping bags, but hey, it’s one of the cheapest down bags around. If you’re just starting out, you could always go for the Cosmic and if you end up becoming a hiking junkie, you could upgrade and retire this bag to car camping adventures.

This bag is also offered in 40-degree and 0-degree versions.

The Kelty Cosmic 20 is also available as a women’s version

Therm-a-Rest Hyperion 20

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 12.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 03.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 32 F
  • Fill Power: 900
Features
  • Lightweight And Small Packing Size
  • Ergonomic Shape And Long Zipper
  • Moisture Resistant Fabric

The Therm-a-Rest Hyperion 20 is a lightweight high quality bag that was designed to help long distance hikers shave pounds from their load.

What we love the most about this bag is its warmth to weight ratio. It’s filled with 900 down which makes it so warm and light. It also packs down quite small, making it great for saving room in your backpack. A little feature we liked was there are two straps underneath it which you can attach to your sleeping pads to keep the bag from slipping off. The Hyperion comes with a compression bag which helps get the bag down to about the size of a large water bottle. There is more insulation on top (70%) and less on the bottom (30%), this saves weight but it also means the design is optimized for sleeping on your back.

What this bag gains in weight saving, it pays for in comfort. The cut is slim, very slim. So, if you’re a bigger dude or lady, you will probably feel constricted in this thing. The Hyperion is very narrow throughout and tapers down even more at the feet. The zipper only goes halfway down the bag, which does shave some ounces but it also means you can’t vent your feet. And, while we’re talking about the zipper, let’s just say it has some room for improvement. There’s a bit of fabric that runs along the zipper but it still snags from time to time.

The Hyperion 20 is excellent value for money and is cheaper than other high end bags on this list, but it is lacking some features like a draft collar that lets you seal the bag around your face. Also, while it’s rated to 20 degrees, its comfort rating is 32 degrees. So we only recommend this  bag for above freezing conditions. If you’re the kind of hiker who doesn’t mind sacrificing some comfort in order to go fast and light, the Hyperion 20 could be the perfect bag for you.

This bag also comes in a 32 degree version.

Marmot NanoWave 45

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 13.9 oz
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Length: 72”
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 05.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 56 F
  • Stuff Sack Size: 6x11”
  • Fill Power: Spirafil
Features
  • Snagless Draft Tube Keeps Cold Air From Seeping Through Zipper
  • Zipper Wraps Around Foot Box For Easy Ventilation
  • “Feely” Drawcords For Easy Adjustment Even In The Dark
  • Synthetic Proprietary Insulation Traps Warmth Even When Wet

BEST BACKPACKING SLEEPING BAG UNDER $100

The Marmot Nanowave 45 is an affordable summer sleeping bag that won’t take up too much room in your backpack. Not only is it cheap, it’s practical and functional which is why it’s our pick for the best backpacking sleeping bag under $100.

If you’re looking for a warmer budget backpacking sleeping bag, check out the REI Trailbreak 20 which is also featured on this list.

The Marmot Nanowave is also available in a 55-degree and 35-degree version.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST MUMMY SLEEPING BAGS

TEMPERATURE RATING

Summer sleeping bags have a rating of 37°F and up. They are often light in weight because they provide less insulation and are highly packable. These are usually the more basic models, meant to protect you from the wind, but not ideal in very cold environments.

Three-season sleeping bags are best suited for traveling in spring and autumn but can also be used in summer, especially if you plan to pitch your tent in the high mountains where nights can be freezing. These models have more functionality than the summer ones: they often have hoods and other features to fight the coldest temperatures. The rating of these multipurpose bags is usually between 20°F and 32°F.

Sleeping bags with a rating below 20°F are meant to keep you warm in any environment, even in the snow. They have all the characteristics of the three-season sleeping bags, with an added layer of insulation to ensure greater protection. These bags are normally bulkier and heavier, but essential if you plan to sleep in environments where temperatures drop heavily during the night.

INSULATION TYPE

Sleeping bags made of synthetic materials do not absorb water and offer excellent protection from soil moisture or light rainfall. These types of sleeping bags are relatively cheap, but they can be bulkier and heavier than down sleeping bags.

Down insulation made from duck or goose feathers is the lighter in terms of weight. These bags can be compressed to a smaller size than synthetic, and they offer the highest protection against the cold. Down sleeping bags are generally more expensive than their synthetic counterparts and do not offer insulation when wet.

WEIGHT

Any hiker knows how important it is to keep the pressure on their shoulders at a minimum, and therefore it is important to consider the weight of a sleeping bag before buying. Ultra-lightweight sleeping bags are best suited for backpacking, however, the reduced weight and bulk usually come at a high price. Summer sleeping bags are lighter than three-season and winter bags as they contain less insulating material, but consider the temperatures you’ll be sleeping at before looking at the weight you’ll be carrying.

PACKED VOLUME

When shopping for a sleeping bag, make sure you check how much space it will occupy in your backpack. Just because a sleeping bag is lightweight doesn’t necessarily mean it is also highly compressible. The volume of a compressed sleeping bag is measured in liters and you should aim at a maximum of 3 liters if your priority is reducing bulk.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Draft tube

The part of the sleeping bag running along with the zippers that is filled with insulating material to reduce the risk of cold air entering.

Hydrophobic

A water-repellent material.

Duck or goose down

The soft plumage that ducks and geese hide under their feathers, used as the insulating material in sleeping bags to protect against heat loss.

Synthetic insulation

Polyester fibers employed as the insulating material to prevent heat loss. A cheaper alternative to down.

Sleeping bag shell

A sleeping bag’s outer layer, usually made of water-repellent nylon.

Snag-free zippers

Zippers designed so that they don’t catch the sleeping bag’s fabric when pulled.

Big Agnes Sentinel 30

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 20.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 3.2 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-Rectangular
  • Volume: 11.2 L
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
  • Fill Power: 650
  • Shell Material: Polyester Taffeta
Features
  • Compressible
  • Water-repellent Down
  • Roomy
Big Agnes Sentinel 30

The Big Agnes Sentinel 30 is a double sleeping bag that is a great option for couples looking for an affordable 2-person bag.

What we love the most about this bag is that it gives you all the warmth advantages of sharing one bag while still being roomy and comfortable. We also liked the price point, it’s not super expensive like the Feathered Friends Spoonbill nor is it too bulky or heavy for backpacking, like some cheaper options. The Sentinel comes with a Flex Pad Sleeve which makes connecting two pads easy. Alternatively, you could stretch it around a double wide pad.

The biggest drawback of this bag, and double bags in general is its lack of versatility. If one partner wants to go solo backpacking for a few nights, she’ll need another bag.

If you want a more premium sleeping bag for you and your adventure partner, check out the Feathered Friends Spoonbill UL. While it’s over double the price, it is much lighter and compressible than the Sentinel.

Big Agnes Cabin Creek 15

Big Agnes Cabin Creek 15

The Big Agnes Cabin Creek 15 is you and your adventure partner’s answer to cold weather camping. With a temperature rating of 15-degrees Fahrenheit, this double sleeping bag will serve you well as a 3-season bag along with mild winter camping.

Slip on in and bundle up by cinching down on the internal drawcord and wrapping the corner pocket around your shoulders. Find your comfy spot and enjoy the extra foot room with the spacious footbox. Big Agnes also did you a solid by incorporating zippers on each side so there’s no need to wake up your partner if you need to climb out at night.

NEMO Jazz Duo

  • Weight: 7.5 lbs

  • Volume: 20.9 L

NEMO Jazz Duo

Tired of zipping two sleeping bags together? Then you will want to take a look at what the Nemo Jazz Duo has to offer. This sleeping bag built for two features an integrated design that attaches the sleeping bag to your sleeping pad to keep everything in place. With dimensions equivalent to a queen-size bed, you’ll find ample room for your hiking partner and your little tyke or furry friend.

For additional comfort, Nemo incorporated a built-in pillowtop and a proprietary Blanket Fold that tucks in around your neck, sort of like your comforter at home. While the Nemo Jazz Duo may be on the heavy side, the size makes it a great choice for the family looking to do a casual overnighter backpacking trip.

Big Agnes Camp Robber

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 650-fill DownTek
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Shape: Rectangular
  • Volume: 29.6 L
  • Temp Rating: 45 F
  • Shell Material: Polyester Taffeta
Features
  • Plush Quilt
  • Decent Weight
  • Water-repellent Down
  • Pillow Pockets
Big Agnes Camp Robber

The Big Agnes Camp Robber Double is like sleeping on a cloud despite being on the cold hard ground. The plush 650-fill down quilt feels like backcountry luxury while the fitted pad cover is soft to the touch.

Whether you and your backpacking partner sleep with the quilt fully zipped or like a throw, you’ll love all this yummy comfort. And the best part? You can have all this without the weight. Weighing less than 4-pounds, the Big Agnes Camp Robber Double is light enough to stuff inside your backpacking pack and not make you feel guilty about added weight for the sake of comfort.

Exped MegaSleep Duo 25

Specs
  • Fill Weight: Polyester
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 4.3 lbs
  • Shape: Rectangular
  • Volume: 14.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 25 F
  • Shell Material: 40-Denier Ripstop Nylon
Features
  • Affordable
  • Quick-drying Insulation
  • Soft
Exped MegaSleep Duo 25

The Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 offers incredible bang for your bang. This double sleeping bag features a clever design that offers two temperature ratings. If it’s chilly out, sleep with the dark blue side up and stay toasty down to 25-degrees Fahrenheit. If it happens to be warmer out, the light blue side will keep you warm as long as temps don’t go below 40-degrees Fahrenheit.

Stuff the Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 into your pack and unravel at camp. This double sleeping bag is compressible without losing loft so you can maximize insulation. Soft to the touch, the Exped MegaSleep Duo is an affordable option for the camping couple who want comfort and don’t mind a little extra bulk.

Big Agnes Dream Island 15

Specs
  • Fill Weight: FireLine Max Polyester (50% Recycled)
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 7.5 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-Rectangular
  • Volume: 55.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
  • Shell Material: Ripstop Nylon
Features
  • Roomy
  • Comfortable
  • Anti-snag Zippers On Each Side
Big Agnes Dream Island 15

Big Agnes named this sleeping bag Dream Island for a reason. This giant sleeping bag is pure camping luxury with its warm insulation and spacious interior.

Snuggle up inside and get warm. The cozy hood and no-draft collar will prevent heat from escaping. Meanwhile, if one of you happen to get a little too warm, you can unzip the anti-snag zipper on your side and let out some of that body heat without disturbing your partner. While the Big Agnes Dream Island is certainly a luxury, it will cost you in weight and space. That said, if you’re not going far, this double sleeping bag may be right up your alley.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A DOUBLE SLEEPING BAG

COST

The thing to keep in mind when choosing a double sleeping bag is you get two for the price of one. That said, the price can range from affordable to expensive. You can easily spend a couple hundred on a single sleeping bag so the same price for a double will wind up saving you money – if that’s all you’ll be using. Consider the type of camping you’ll be doing and weigh the cost.

WEIGHT

Since they’re built for two, double sleeping bags will have more material which means more weight. The kicker here is, you can’t split the weight up between two packs when you’re backpacking. If you want the benefits of a double bag minus the weight, go with a lighter option. On the other hand, if you’re car camping you can trade in weight for luxury.

WARMTH

While your adventure partner will help heat up your shared sleeping bag, double sleeping bags leave more room for air so they won’t necessarily insulate as well as a single sleeping bag.

However, that doesn’t mean they’re not warm. Many double sleeping bags have toasty temperature ratings. The question is, how much warmth will you need on your trip? When in doubt, go with a warmer bag. Nothing is worse than spending the whole night shivering. For more tips, check out our guide on How to Stay Warm in a Tent

TEMPERATURE RATINGS

The temperature rating of a sleeping bag will tell you the lowest temperature the average person can sleep comfortably inside it. This rating is determined by lab testing which means real-world performance can vary. If you’re a cold sleeper, it’s best to go with a sleeping bag that has a rating lower than the lowest temp you’ll be sleeping in. If your partner is a warm sleeper, they can always unzip their side.

INSULATION TYPE

The insulation of your double sleeping bag is what will help you retain body heat and stay warm. There are two types you’ll encounter:

Down insulation is superior when it comes to maximizing warmth. Made from the plumage of ducks and geese, down is lofty, lightweight, and compressible. It’s also expensive and pretty much useless when wet.

Synthetic insulation performs well in the outdoors. It’s moisture-wicking, quick-drying, less expensive, and still insulates when wet. The drawback is it doesn’t insulate as well and is heavier than down.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Durable water repellent (DWR)

Durable water-repellent, or DWR as it’s often referred to, is a common treatment added to outdoor gear and apparel. This finish allows water droplets to roll off the material rather than saturate it.

Hydrophobic down

Down treated with a water-repellent chemical.

Draft collar

A draft collar is an insulated area around the head opening. This is designed to prevent heat from escaping.

NEMO Disco 15

BEST SLEEPING BAG FOR BIG GUYS AND TALL PEOPLE

The Nemo Disco 15 is a roomy backpacking sleeping bag that was designed for comfort. The Disco is our top choice for big and tall guys (and ladies) who might feel claustrophobic in a typical mummy bag. It’s also another great option for side sleepers.

What we loved the most about the Disco is its spacious dimensions. This is thanks to what Nemo calls their Classic Spoon shape, which makes the bag wider in the elbows and knees.  We also loved the Therma-gills which are vents that allow you to fine-tune the temperature without having to unzip the bag. This feature makes it a more versatile bag that could be comfortable to use in warmer temps.

The biggest drawbacks of the Nemo Disco are it’s on the heavier, bulkier end when it comes to backpacking sleeping bags. The weight and packsize penalty come with the extra fabric needed to make this roomy bag. So, if you are a bigger guy or gal or you just like to sprawl, and you don’t mind hauling extra weight, the Disco 15 might be the best option for you. If the weight is a big concern for you, check out the Nemo Riff 15, it’s not only lighter but also more packable. One more downside is the wider design is that cold pockets of air can form in the empty spaces, something to consider if you are a cold sleeper.

This sleeping bag also comes in a 30 degree model.

The Nemo Disco also comes in a women’s version which is available in 15 degree and 30 degree options.

Marmot Hydrogen 30

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 10.9 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 1.4 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 06.8 L
  • Temp Rating: 33 F
  • Fill Power: 800
Features
  • Strong And Durable
  • Broad, Long, And Roomy
  • Extra Zipper On The Side

The insulating features of the Marmot Hydrogen Down Sleeping Bag will surely keep you warm even through colder nights. An insulated tube covers the 2-way anti-snag zipper to prevent any cold breeze from seeping in. A fold-down second zipper equips you with ventilation, so you won’t overheat on warmer nights. Moreover, an insulated hood will warmly cradle your head thanks to its multi-baffle design that keeps the down from moving by separating it into different compartments. And cinching drawcords at the top of this bag allow you to secure the hood around your face to prevent wind from chafing your face all night.

Unlike a caterpillar cocoon, this mummy sleeping bag is durable and sure to live a long life. It has two hang loops for storing, drying, or just airing out the bag to help increase its lifespan with proper care. Another nifty feature includes an internal stash pocket perfect for keeping nighttime essentials and valuables nearby. Considering all these specs, the bag’s super light weight of 1 lb. 7 oz. is almost unbelievable.

Big Agnes Anvil Horn 15

Specs
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
  • Fill Power: 650
  • Shell Material: Ripstop Polyester
Features
  • Compressible Insulation
  • Water-repellent Down
  • Adjustable Hood
  • Anti-snag Zipper

The Big Agnes Anvil 15 has a clever design uncommon in other sleeping bags. It includes a flexible sleeve on the bottom of the bag that attaches to your sleeping pad – think fitted mattress sheet. This means no slipping and sliding off your sleeping pad as you toss and turn at night. There’s even a space to tuck in your pillow so it won’t slip out from under your head.

Along with the integrated system, the Big Agnes 15 is rather roomy and cozy enough for a chilly night. That said, this does add extra weight and some may find the innovative construction to be annoying rather than helpful, so if you fall into this category you may want to look elsewhere.

Sea to Summit Ascent AcI

Specs
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 35 F
  • Fill Power: 750
  • Shell Material: 20-Denier Nylon
Features
  • Extra Room
  • Breathable
  • Internal Security Pocket
  • Responsible Down Standard Certified

Not a fan of the super slim mummy bags? Then take a look at the Sea to Summit Ascent AcI25. This down sleeping bag takes the mummy bag shape and beefs it up to give you extra wiggle room.

To keep the down right where it belongs, the Sea to Summit Ascent AcI 25 incorporates horizontal baffles around the anatomically shaped footbox and vertical baffles around the chest. Climb on in and cinch down on the large hood. The draft collar is also amped up to prevent the cold from seeping in around the head area so you can get a good night’s rest no matter how chilly it is outside.

Marmot Sawtooth 15

Specs
  • Fill Weight: 21.0 oz
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 2.5 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Volume: 07.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 27 F
  • Fill Power: 650
  • Shell Material: 20-Denier Mini Ripstop Nylon
Features
  • Warm
  • Comfortable
  • Internal Stash Pocket

The Marmot Sawtooth is a quality down sleeping bag that incorporates a healthy mix of warmth and water protection given the price. With a comfort rating of 27.1 degrees F, the Marmot Sawtooth will keep you warm on most 3-season backpacking trips.

For peace of mind when moisture strikes, this down sleeping bag not only incorporates water-repellent down but a durable water-repellent shell as well. The drawcord collar is a nice touch to help cinch this bag down and block out the cold. Should you find temperatures to be colder than expected, stuff a heat packet into the heat pocket at the bottom of the bag and keep your toes nice and toasty.

Big Agnes Pluton UL 40

Specs
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
  • Fill Power: 850
  • Shell Material: Ripstop Nylon
Features
  • Super Lofty Down
  • Very Lightweight
  • Drawcord Hood

If cutting ounces are a concern to you, you’ll want to consider the Big Agnes Pluton UL 40. This down sleeping bag clocks in at an exceptionally light weight of 1 pound, 3ounces, making it one of the lightest bags around.

Along with the featherweight, the Big Agnes Pluton UL 40 is packed with highly compressible, water-repellent 850-fill down. This means this sleeping bag is not only super lofty, but it also won’t lose said loft when moisture strikes. Should you be backpacking on a warmer night, unzip the two-way zipper and turn it into a quilt. The one drawback you’ll find is this bag doesn’t give much wiggle room, so expect to sleep in full mummy fashion when not fully unzipped.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A DOWN SLEEPING BAG

COST

While there are many factors to consider when choosing the best down sleeping bag, your budget will be the big kicker. Down doesn’t come cheap. That said, you can still get a quality down sleeping bag at an affordable price. The cost will parallel the quality so it’s all a matter of the type of camping you’ll be doing and what you can squeeze into your budget. If you’re on a tight budget, check out these budget sleeping bags

WEIGHT

When it comes to weight versus warmth, here’s an important piece of advice: don’t skimp on warmth merely for a lighter weight! Down sleeping bags will vary from ultralight to heavy. And while a lighter sleeping bag helps you achieve a lighter pack weight, it may not be doing you any favors when you’re shivering at night. Be sure to compare weights with temperature ratings so they balance out rather than cause you to trade off one for the other.

WARMTH

Down is one of the warmest materials you can stuff inside a sleeping bag. It achieves this warmth by trapping your body heat inside the sleeping bag. This means a well insulated bag with less wiggle room will keep you warmer and vice versa. If you tend to run cold or will be sleeping in colder weather, you may want to consider maxing out the warmth of your bag.

TEMPERATURE RATINGS

The warmth of your sleeping bag is a major factor you’ll need to consider when choosing a down sleeping bag. To determine how warm a down sleeping bag is, you’ll want to take into account both the temperature rating and the comfort rating.

Temperature rating is the average lowest temperature the manufacturer claims will keep you warm.

Comfort rating is the lowest temperature a person can sleep comfortably and is also the temperature used to rate women’s sleeping bags. This rating is more so based on a real world comfort.

Keep in mind, without a proper sleeping pad to provide insulation from the cold ground, your sleeping bag rating won’t be able to operate at its full potential. Check out our guide on How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep Outdoors

INSULATION TYPE

There are two types of insulations you’ll encounter when searching for the right sleeping bag: down and synthetic. Here’s what you need to know about both:

Down is a natural material that typically comes from the plumage of either ducks or geese. It has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and is highly compressible. The bad news is, it doesn’t insulate when wet and it has a higher price point than synthetic.

Synthetic insulation is made from synthetic materials – polyester being the most common. This material is quick-drying, water-resistant, durable, and less expensive than down. However, it’s bulkier, heavier, and not as warm.

SHAPE

Down sleeping bags are offered in a few different shapes.

  • Mummy bags feature a tapered shape to optimize insulation while also reducing weight.
  • Semi-rectangular bags have a similar shape to a mummy bag except they offer more space.
  • Rectangular bags are common in car camping. They offer a ton of room but don’t insulate as well as other shapes.
  • Quilts fully unzip allowing you to sleep as if you would under your comforter. They’re great at insulating and reduce weight.

The thing to keep in mind is the snugger the fit, the better the insulation. Keep in mind that the snugger the fit, the more constricted you are inside. Choosing shape is all about what is more comfortable for you.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Baffles

Baffles are stitching used on down products to keep the down in place. This helps prevent the down from clumping into one space and causing cold spots.

Draft collar

A draft collar is essentially a large baffle or tube filled with down that blocks the cold from seeping in around the opening.

Fill-power

Fill-power is a measurement outdoor manufacturers use to tell you how lofty the down is inside the sleeping bag. The higher the number, the better the sleeping bag is at insulating.

Durable water-repellent (DWR)

Durable water-repellent is a finish applied to outdoor gear and apparel to prevent it from becoming saturated.
