THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING RAIN PANTS

FABRIC

The fabric of your rain pant is arguably the most important feature to check when picking out your new pair of rain pants

Nylon is a common fabric, and ripstop nylon is a step above standard nylon that will help make sure you pants don’t rip. Nylon does tend to make a crunching noise as you hike, but you stop noticing it after a mile or so.

Pants that have a Gore Tex PacLite membrane basically mean that they’ve been coated with a highly weatherproof guard that is softer and more comfortable than nylon or polyester. This means that the pants will certainly keep you dry, and are packable, so they won’t take up much room in your pack. The Adventure Junkies think pants with a Gore Tex PacLite membrane are the way to go, but they can oftentimes be a bit more expensive.

Polyester is also a common fabric you see listed in this article. Polyester is usually accompanied by a cheaper price than nylon or Gore Tex, but is still does the job of being waterproof. It’s a bit of a thinner material than nylon, and can be noisy when hiking, but it does the job of keeping you dry and that’s the most important factor.

TYPE OF WATERPROOFING

Several of the pants featured in this article are treated with different types of waterproofing to make sure the pants are weather resistant but also comfortable.

The most common type of waterproofing in this article is Gore Tex PacLite. This type of waterproofing is completely weatherproof and comfortable, while still being packable and lightweight.

Patagonia uses a H2No Water Treatment that is their proprietary technology to ensure their rain gear is dually waterproof and breathable.

PerTex Shield is another term featured in this article describing the type of waterproofing. PerTex Shield is resistant to rain and snow, windproof, and highly breathable.

Read more here about how to pick out rain gear and for tips on hiking in the rain.

WEIGHT

The weight of your rain pants can be a big factor for someone going on a long backpacking trip, where every ounce counts.

Figuring out what exactly you will be using your rain pants for, and then finding a pair that fits the features you want at the weight you’re looking for, is the way to go.

For example, if you are going to be using the rain pants for hiking as well as winter sports, you may want a pant with a wider boot leg or straps that can attach to the bottom of your boots.

COST

A pair of rain pants won’t set you back as much as a rain jacket will, but some of them can still be rather expensive.

Similar to a rain jacket, once you buy a pair of rain pants, you shouldn’t have to replace them for a long time. Keep this in mind when you are dishing out some cash for rain pants.

POCKETS

Pockets are a popular feature for rain pants because it’s nice to have extra storage compartments at your access. Need a place to throw your keys? Stick them in your pockets. Looking for a midday snack? What better place than a pocket.

Some pockets are zip shut and others are not. If you are one who puts precious items in you pants, such as your keys or wallet, you might be looking for extra security a zipper provides. If not, you could probably go without.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

RIPSTOP NYLON

Ripstop nylon is a type of nylon sewn with a reinforcing technique to provide a quality garment that won’t rip or shred easily. This makes nylon a great choice for rain gear, because oftentimes you can be hiking through rocky terrain, and with ripstop nylon you will have the security that your clothes can withstand the wilderness.

GORE TEX

Gore Tex works as a membrane on a garment to prevent it from harsh weather conditions including rain, snow, sleet, hail and others.

Gore Tex is also comfortable. It is softer than nylon or polyester, and it’s breathable material so it won’t leave you drenched in your own sweat at the end of the day.

PACLITE PLUS

A lot of times Gore Tex is paired with PacLite Plus in this article. This makes for not just a waterproof garment, but also a garment that can pack down very small, meaning it is lightweight and it won’t take up much room in your pack. Double bonus.

WATERTIGHT ZIPPERS

Watertight zippers are the bees knees. They ensure that water won’t get in between your zips, and are easy to zip up and down.

REINFORCED INSTEPS

Reinforced insteps means that your rain pants have an extra layer of fabric where it is needed most: the bottom of your pants. A lot of times when hiking through rough terrain, pants can shred easily on the rocks/dirt/debris you are stepping over. Reinforced insteps make it a little tougher to shred by adding an extra layer of security.

SIDE ZIPS

Most of the pants in this article come with side zips. Their main goal? To make it easy to put your hiking boots/trail runners on and take them off. Having the ability to zip up the leg of your pants, put on your shoes, and then zip down the leg of your pants helps tremendously.

H2No PERFORMANCE STANDARD WATERPROOF BREATHABLE FABRIC

This is Patagonia’s waterproofing fabric material. It is soft, breathable, and durable, and is used on most of their rain gear.

ARTICULATED KNEES

Articulated knees are a big bonus, because no one likes stiff pants when you’re hiking. This gives your pants the ability to move with you when you step, instead of holding your leg back in a stiff position.

Articulated knees means the designer prepared for you to bend your leg, and designed the fabric in a way that will benefit your knee when it’s bending.

GUSSETED CROTCH

A gusseted crotch means the crotch of your pants has a diamond like pattern of fabric that lays over the seams. This reinforces the crotch area of your pants, so that you can sit criss cross applesauce without a worry of your pants splitting on you.

When you’re enjoying a nice sunny day in the great outdoors, it’s important to remember that Mother Nature can change her mind in an instant. This is why having the best lightweight rain jacket for women should be a top priority for your backcountry gear list.

For backpackers and hikers alike, it’s common to want gear that performs well, but is also lightweight. You don’t want to add extra ounces to your back when you can have a jacket with the same features for a lesser weight. That’s why we think having a lightweight rain jacket is the way to go.

A durable, weather proof rain jacket should keep you dry amid a snow or rain storm in the mountains. And unlike other gear essentials that you’ll have to replace annually, like shoes, a rain jacket should last you for years.

Listed below are a range of rain jackets we think you’ll like. Made of different fabrics and extending different lengths, these jackets are quite different, but share one thing in common: they are all lightweight options.

Another five star rain jacket from Arc’teryx, the Beta AR Jacket is similar to the Zeta SL Rain Jacket, but with more bells and whistles.

This product is made with 3-layer Gore Tex, and to be honest, waterproofing material just doesn’t get better than that. Different than the Zeta SL, this jacket has a collar that circumferences the neck of the jacket, providing a bit more coverage and warmth amid a storm.

This jacket also has pit zips that help with ventilation, and all of the zippers (pit zippers, front pocket zippers, and the jacket zipper) are taped and watertight, meaning they won’t break on you. And, when fully zipped, the jacket will provide complete coverage from rain and snow.

The Beta AR jacket performs extremely well in very cold weather conditions, so if you’re hiking in the alpine, this is the jacket that will keep you warm.

Again, a product of this superiority comes with a hefty price tag. But know if you buy one of these, you won’t have to buy another for a very long time.

This jacket has a two-way front zipper making it a breeze to get in and out of, even when you just need to quickly access your headphone cord that’s stored inside the jacket. Also a very lightweight option weighing just less than a pound, this jacket folds into its own pocket, guaranteeing it won’t take up much space in your pack.

This jacket runs a bit large, which isn’t always a bad thing. It means you have room to wear your puffy or thermal layer underneath on cold mornings, but keep this in consideration when making your selection as it will add extra weight.

Arc'teryx Codetta

BEST FOR: THE INTERNATIONAL HIKER

Arc’Teryx designed the Codetta Coat for the traveler who enjoys a little extra coverage when it comes to a rain jacket.

The length of this rain jacket is similar to a trench coat, extending to the top of the thighs. But it doesn’t have the typical weight of a trench coat, weighing in at a couple ounces less than a pound.

This jacket is structured and flattering, and Arc’Teryx doesn’t lack any details when it comes to this product, with stylized and shaped cufflinks, collar, hood, and back. It also comes in several beautiful colors, including shorepine green and ginger root.

The back of this jacket has a pleat near the back of the knee that will allow you to sit on a bike seat without having to pull the jacket up over your hips. The two way zipper on the front makes it easy to get in and out of.

Similar to other Arc’Teryx products, this lightweight rain jacket will cost you a pretty penny, but will last you for years and will be your favorite jacket in your closet.

BEST FOR: THE BEGINNING HIKER

The North Face Venture 2 Rain Jacket is a solid, affordable option for someone who is breaking into outdoor recreation.

This coat has a relaxed fit, so you can fit a thermal layer or puffy underneath it easily. It comes in endless color options too, so your favorite color is sure to be available.

The relaxed fit of this jacket is also customizable, with adjustable cufflinks, hood, and waist. The pit zips will help with ventilation while you’re on the go. The North Face’s Venture 2 packs down to fit into the left pocket of the jacket, so you know it won’t take up much room in your closet or your pack.

Take note that this jacket won’t provide you the level of warmth some other jackets featured in this article will, because the nylon it’s made of is a bit thin.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A LIGHTWEIGHT RAIN JACKET

TYPE OF WATERPROOFING

The rain jackets featured in this article come with a multitude of waterproofing treatments. Let’s break them down a bit.

Gore Tex is the most foolproof option for water resistant fabric. This is because Gore Tex is not only fully waterproof (meaning it keeps you dry in snow or rain), but it also allows vapor to pass through. So while you’re hiking in the rain and sweating from the miles, it will breathe out your sweat while keeping you dry.

Waterproof Breathable Laminate is also a great option because it’s fully waterproof. Laminate is also very breathable, durable, and lightweight. Two-Layer Laminate means that the laminate is layered inside of the jacket as well as the outside of the jacket, providing double the coverage.

Coatings on rain jackets are not as full proof as Gore Tex or Laminate, but can often still be waterproof and specialize in being ultralight. So if you’re going hiking somewhere where it doesn’t rain often but you still want some coverage, this could be a good option for you.

Check out this article to learn more about types of waterproofing.

WEIGHT

This article is about lightweight rain jackets, so we understand that weight is an important factor in picking out bad weather gear.

When deciding on a weight for a rain jacket, it’s important to determine what you’ll be using the jacket for. Will you be taking this on a long-distance hike across the country, where every single ounce counts, or will you be taking it with you on day hikes where rain could be in the forecast?

If your pack is going to have ten pounds of other gear in it, it might be more important for you to have a more lightweight rain jacket than if you’re going on a day hike.

It’s also important to decide which features you’re not willing to compromise on. Some rain jackets featured in this article are extremely lightweight, but don’t have adjustable cufflinks.

Would that bother you? Are you willing to compromise that for a few ounces? The choice is up to you.

PRICE

A solid rain jacket is going to be an item you’re likely going to spend $100+ on. BUT if you get the right coat, you shouldn’t have to replace it for years.

A rain jacket is a vital piece of gear for the outdoors. Being wet in the mountains is not only uncomfortable, but it can be dangerous at alpine heights or extremely low temperatures. It’s important to have a coat that is water resistant and keeps you warm and shielded from the wind.

See what you can finance for a rain coat, then look for something in your price range that offers features you want and go from there.

ADJUSTABILITY

Most of the rain jackets in this article can be tailored to a fit you feel most comfortable in. This can be very helpful with a rain jacket, because oftentimes rain coats can be a bit bulky, so tailoring them to your body is a great feature.

Adjustable cufflinks, waist, and hood will all ensure your raincoat will keep you as dry as possible while also performing best for you. No one wants a raincoat that hinders their vision, so having an adjustable hood is possibly the most important adjustable feature.

Having an adjustable waist will help you feel safe and secure in your jacket, and adjustable cufflinks help keep water off your arms when you’re hiking with trekking poles.

All of this being said, you will definitely make it with a jacket that doesn’t have adjustable features, as long as it’s still fully waterproof.

POCKETS

All of the jackets in this article come with two side pockets for your hands or storing gear. Some of these rain jackets come with a front chest pocket, a great addition for extra storage.

A chest pocket is a versatile feature for the outdoors or wearing your coat in town, because it’s a good place to throw a bar for a midday snack, or your keys when you’re going grocery shopping.

VENTILATION

Ventilation is important when you’re going to be using your rain jacket to protect you from weather while you’re putting in work in the mountains.

Pit zips are possibly the most favorable ventilation system for a rain jacket, but torso vents, back vents, and chest vents can also help release some of the steam your body builds up from sweat when it’s raining.

Most pit zips and other ventilation areas are accessible with a watertight zipper, or double layer fabric design, making it easy peasy to access the ventilation zones when you need them.

However, ventilation systems cost you ounces, so the more lightweight the jacket, the less ventilation areas are typically available.

Read this article for more about how to pick out rain gear.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HALO ADJUSTER

A halo adjuster can be either a drawstring cord or a velcro fabric adjuster that helps you fit the hood of the jacket to the size of your head. This is beneficial because you don’t want your hood to be so big on you that it covers your eyes, shielding you from the outside.

WATERTIGHT ZIPPER

A watertight zipper means that the zipper won’t let any water in amid a rain or snow storm. These zippers are also durable and function well, meaning they won’t break on you or cause you serious frustration when you’re on the go.

ADJUSTABLE CUFFS AND WAIST

Several of the jackets The Adventure Junkies feature in this article have adjustable cuffs and waist. This means that you can tailor the fit of the cuffs and waist to your liking. If you want a medium sized coat, because you want to wear a puffy underneath it, but you have a small sized waist, an adjustable drawstring will help you out.

TAPED SEAMS

Taped seams means that the jacket simply won’t be coming apart at the seams, because these areas are reinforced with a waterproof material.

REINFORCED AREAS

Shoulders and pits are the areas this article features reinforcement in rain jackets. This means that there is either an extra layer of fabric to provide durability, or a waterproofing treatment has been applied to these areas to ensure you stay dry.

PIT ZIPS

Pit zips are a popular ventilation zone for rain jackets. This means that you can zip the pits open and let all the air and sweat out that accumulates while you’re logging miles. This will keep you cooler than jackets without pit zips. BUT zippers are going to cost you ounces, so if you’re looking for an ultralight rain jacket, it likely doesn’t have this feature.

TWO WAY FRONT ZIPPER

A two way front zipper does exactly as it sounds: zips both up and down. A great option if you regularly access snacks or other things inside of your jacket, or if you enjoy an easy take on and off process.

When you’re out in the backcountry, there’s nothing better than wrapping up in one of the best synthetic sleeping bags money can buy after a long day of trekking in the mountains. Oftentimes, sleeping under the stars in a nice, warm bag is what hikers look forward to most.

A synthetic sleeping bag is a reliable and eco-friendly choice for your nights spent outside. Synthetic bags mean that they are stuffed with material that wasn’t derived from animals, and oftentimes the fabric these bags are shelled with is eco-friendly, too.

That’s up to you to figure out, but The Adventure Junkies broke down the ten best synthetic sleeping bags to help you start your search. Whether you’re looking for something lightweight or something that will keep you warm in temperatures down to 0 degrees F, we’ve got what you’re looking for here.

Reviews - The Best Synthetic Backpacking Sleeping Bag

Nemo Forte 35

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.1 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
Features
  • 80% postconsumer recycled content.
  • Unique Spoon™ shaped bags offer more room at the elbows and knees, allowing side sleepers to shift positions comfortably throughout the night.
  • Waterproof/breathable foot-box withstands tent condensation, keeping feet warm and dry.
Nemo Forte 35 Summer Sleeping Bag

The Nemo Forte 35 is an affordable synthetic sleeping bag that has plenty of room for those who love to sprawl out. This bag is a great option for mild weather adventures where you don’t have to travel too far to get to your campsite.

What we love the most about this bag is its spacious dimensions. If you’ve ever felt trapped in a narrow mummy bag, you’ll love the Forte’s hourglass shape that is wider at the shoulders and feet and slightly tapered at the hips. This design is perfect for side sleepers or people who tend to move around a lot at night. We also loved what NEMO calls thermo gills, they are zips that let the insulation spread apart which is great for warm summer nights.

The biggest drawback of this bag is its weight and pack size. At 2lbs 2 oz, it’s not the best choice for long distance backpacking but is manageable for overnight trips. The Forte uses Primaloft synthetic insulation which has its pros and cons. It doesn’t pack down as small as down but it is far more affordable.

If you love the idea of this bag but wish it had down insulation, check out the Nemo Disco line

This sleeping bag also comes in a 20 degree version.

The Nemo Forte also comes in a women’s specific version in both 20 degree and 35 degree versions.

Marmot Trestles 0

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
  • Shell: Polyester
  • Stuff Sack Size: 9.5 x 21 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Fitted Hood Provides Warmth
  • External Stash Pocket Stores Your Valuables
  • Zipper Guard Prevents Bag From Snagging While Zipping And Unzipping
  • Vaulted Footbox Provides Warmth

The Marmot Trestles 0 sleeping bag is a great option for someone looking for a bag that will keep them warm in frigid temperatures, but doesn’t want to break the bank to invest in an expensive cold weather bag.

This bag is rated to keep you warm in temperatures down to 0°F, so it’s a great bag to take with you to the Cascades in Washington or the Sierra Nevadas in California. The bag itself will keep you toasty and cozy and the hood of the bag will provide extra heat for you.

This bag is made with quality material, including a zipper guard to make sure it won’t snag on your bag when you’re zipping it up. A 3D foodbox at the bottom provides warmth, and will also keep you comfortable by providing enough space at your feet so you won’t feel like you’re sardined into a bag.

This bag is a bit heavy, with the regular size weighing in at about 4 ½ lbs, but it sells at a killer price point. It can be hard to find a reliable backpacking sleeping bag for under $150 and, which is why this is a great option for hikers on a budget.

Therm-a-Rest Space Cowboy 45

Specs
  • Insulation: Down
  • Weight: 1.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 52 F
Features
  • Snag Free Zipper
  • Highly Compressible
  • Cinchable Hood For Increased Warmth

The Therm-a-Rest Space Cowboy 45 is one of the very few sleeping bags with water-resistant synthetic filling. This allows it to increase insulation – even when wet –  while decreasing weight. However, it is designed for summer camping, as it withstands only 45°F. The bag features ThermaCapture zoned insulation that is strategically placed to catch your body’s own rising heat. You can also cinch the hood down around your head for a snuggly, draft-free rest.

To increase versatility, this sleeping bag has loops that you can use to layer more quilts and blankets on it, making it useful in colder conditions. The zipper is snag-free to ensure its durability and ease of use. The Cowboy 45 weighs 1.5 lbs. – average for ultralight sleeping bags – but it can be compressed down to 2 liters of volume, saving lots of valuable space in your backpack.

Marmot Nanowave 45

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 56 F
Features
  • Draft tube keeps cold air from seeping through zipper
  • Zipper wraps around foot box
  • Synthetic insulation traps warmth even when wet
Marmot Nanowave Summer Sleeping Bag

The Marmot Nanowave 45 is an affordable summer sleeping bag that won’t take up too much room in your backpack. Not only is it cheap, it’s also practical and functional.

In awarding it the winner of the best under $100 category, we realize it’s not quite fair because most other bags on this list have a temperature rating down to around 20 degrees. However, if you’re on a super tight budget and plan to camp from mid-spring to mid-fall, the Nanowave 45 is hard to beat.

Which leads us to the biggest downside of this bag, it is only good in mild weather. But, not everyone needs or wants a super warm bag and if you combine the Nanowave with an extra warm sleeping pad and a thermal liner, you might be able to extend the temperature range of this bag down a few degrees, making it much more versatile. If you’re looking for a warmer budget backpacking sleeping bag, check out the REI Trailbreak 20.

The Marmot Nanowave is also available in a 55-degree and 35-degree version.

REI Co-op Trailbreak 20

  • Volume: 12.0 L
  • Temp Rating: 29 F
  • Fill Power: Polyester

  • Water-resistant synthetic fill
  • 3-panel hood
  • Stuff sack included
REI Trailbreak 20 Backpacking Sleeping Bag

The REI Co-op Trailbreak 20 is a budget minded synthetic sleeping bag that was designed for people who are just starting out backpacking.

Just because this bag is a steal doesn’t doesn’t mean that it is cheap. While the Trailbreak 20 is nowhere near as light, comfortable or packable as the bags at the top of our list, we have to give it credit for being an exceptional value. Its size and weight is manageable for short backpacking trips.

The cash savings do come with some drawbacks. The lining fabric is a bit rough making it much less comfortable than the silky fabric found on many other bags. Also, it doesn’t have a neck baffle, so some heat does escape through the top of the bag. One last nitpick, the Trailbreak doesn’t come with a compression sack, so you’ll need to calculate that into your decision. If you’re on a tight budget and just can’t spring for a better sleeping bag right now, this is a good option to get you out on the trail fast.

Looking for a summer sleeping bag? The REI Trailbreak is also available in a 30-degree version.

The REI Trailbreak comes in a women’s specific which is available as a 20-degree or 30-degree bag

The North Face Cat’s Meow 22

Specs
  • Weight: 2.2 lbs
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temp Rating: 31 F
  • Shell: Ripstop Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: 9 x 16 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Fitted Hood Provides Warmth
  • No-Draft Collar Prevents Heat Loss
  • Vaulted Footbox Provides Warmth
The North Face Cat's Meow 22

The North Face Cat’s Meow is a great option for someone who tends to venture into the outdoors in the spring/summer seasons.

The shell of this bag is made with ripstop nylon, which is a tougher fabric than polyester or just plain nylon, and will ensure your bag won’t shed on you in rocky terrain when you might be camping under the stars instead of inside your tent.

A fitted hood will provide warmth and can serve as extra cushioning for your head when you lay it down to sleep. There is also a draft collar that will provide extra heat and will prevent heat loss throughout the night.

This bag isn’t going to be the warmest option featured by The Adventure Junkies, so if you know you sleep cold, or you like to hike in the fall/winter season and are looking for a bag to keep you warm at high alpine levels, this may not be the bag for you.

The North Face One Bag

Specs
  • Insulation: Down / Synthetic
  • Weight: 3.7 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-Rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 29 F
  • Shell: Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: N/A
  • Zipper Location: Left
Features
  • Three Bags In One Means You’ll Always Be Prepared, No Matter The Weather
  • Non-snag Zippers Make It Easy To Transition Between Configurations
  • Bottom Layer Rolls Up Into A Pillow If You Don’t Need The Added Warmth

A great bag for any season, The North Face One Bag Sleeping Bag will keep you warm in just about any temperature you can imagine sleeping in down to 5° F. Although there is technically a down layer included in this 3-in-1 bag, we still think the synthetic outer layer makes this one of the best synthetic bag choices on the market today.

This bag has easy-to-use zippers, so configuring the bags just the way you want them will be a breeze. For mild summer nights, you can opt to use only the super lightweight 40° F outer layer on its own. If there’s a chill in the air, you can pair the blue outer layer with the removable yellow mid-layer and stay warm down to 20°F. And if you’re an extreme camper who loves sleeping outside during the wintertime, then use all three bags for warmth in temperatures down to 5°F!

This is certainly the most versatile bag on the list and it’s very popular among both car campers and backpackers because it just about meets all your wilderness sleeping needs!

Exped MegaSleep 25

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 25 F
  • Shell: Ripstop Nylon
  • Stuff Sack Size: 22 x 12 Inches
  • Zipper Location: Left/Right
Features
  • Zippers On Both Sides Of Bag Makes It Easy To Get In And Out And Control Temperature
  • Draft Tube Along Zipper Prevents Heat Loss
  • Quick-Drying Insulation Means You Won’t Need To Worry If This Bag Gets Wet

The Exped MegaSleep 25 Sleeping Bag is a versatile option for anyone who likes to camp or backpack.

Weighing in at about 2 ½ pounds, this bag isn’t too heavy for a pack, and won’t take up too much space either. The bag has zippers down both sides, so you can get in and out of it easily, and adjust the temperature easily according to your preference.

This bag is a rectangle shape, so you will have plenty of room to spread out, no matter what your favorite sleeping position is. There is a draft tube along both zippers in this bag that will help prevent heat loss and keep you cocooned into your bag at night.

Tested to keep you warm down to 25° F, this bag is a great option for spring, summer, or fall camping or backpacking.

Big Agnes Lost Dog 15

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 3.1 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 15 F
Features
  • Spacious Footbox
  • Includes Mesh And Nylon Storage Sack
  • Two Way Zipper
  • Can Be Attached To Another Right-Zip Sleeping Bag

The Big Agnes Lost Dog is a cold-oriented sleeping bag that withstands temperatures up to 15°F. It uses FireLine ECO synthetic insulation made from recycled polyester, and the innovative design includes several features for comfort. It has a Free Range hood that allows you to lift your head while keeping a snug fit around your face. The Free Range foot box is similar, giving you some wiggle room. An additional no-draft collar will keep the cold wind out.

For convenience, a Flex Pad Sleeve can stretch over an insulated sleeping pad for extra warmth. The bag also has a 2-way anti-snag zipper and can be joined with another right-zip sleeping bag. If that doesn’t sound comfy enough, the Lost Dog offers a Pillow Barn feature that makes sure your pillow stays put all night. Although it is on the pricier end of affordable, the extra features make it worth it.

Sea to Summit Trailhead ThII 30

Specs
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 2.3 lbs
  • Shape: Semi-rectangular
  • Temp Rating: 40 F
Features
  • Extra Spacious
  • Second Zipper In Footbox
  • Full Length Zipper To Convert Sleeping Bag Into A Quilt

The Sea to Summit Trailhead ThII 30 is another synthetic sleeping bag that retains its insulation abilities even when wet. It uses a unique WaveLoft technique that tangles filling fibers for maximum heat retention up to 30°F. This bag has a tapered rectangular shape, providing you with comfort and room to move. An oversized anti-snag zipper draft tube will guard your whole body against cold chills when you snuggle down in this bag.

An important characteristic of the THII 30 is its versatility. Its full-length zipper lets you turn this sleeping bag into a quilt. Furthermore, there is a second zipper in the foot box, allowing ventilation for your feet and broad temperature adjustability. Plus, to prevent your frustration, the bag’s lining fabric is directly attached to the shell fabric, which prevents zipper tangles.  This sleeping bag is excellent for backpacking since it weighs about 2.5 lbs – not much more than most ultralight sleeping bags!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING THE BEST SYNTHETIC SLEEPING BAGS

PRICE

One of the best things about buying a synthetic sleeping bag is that it won’t break the bank the way a down sleeping bag would. You can find a reliable synthetic sleeping bag at a very reasonable price for $100 or less.

Sleeping bags that are a higher cost than this probably have more features than others. For example, they might have a double size zipper, ventilation options, or a hood. Define what features are most important to you and think about how much you can afford to invest in your sleep system, and go from there.

TEMPERATURE RATING

The synthetic sleeping bags that will keep you warm in colder temperatures are usually going to weigh more than those that aren’t. But if you’re going to be trekking in alpine heights, or you’re into mountaineering, getting a bag with a proper temperature rating could mean the difference between life and hypothermia.

The temperature rating is arguably the most important thing to consider when buying a sleeping bag. Know where you’re planning to camp and figure out what the temperature there will be like, and take into consideration that the higher the elevation, the lower the temperature. Then choose a bag that is rated to keep you warm in temperatures at least 10° F below the coldest temperature you’re expecting to sleep in.

Check out this article from REI for more info about how to pick a sleeping bag temperature.

WEIGHT

One of the drawbacks to a synthetic sleeping bag is that they tend to be fairly heavy. They are heavier than down sleeping bags, but much more affordable, and you can still find a middle ground between weight, warmth, and cost.

Knowing the weight of the other items in your pack will help you decide how heavy of a bag you can buy. Determine your base weight. This is the weight of everything in your pack minus food and water. Then, add everything up minus your sleeping bag. This should give you a target of what to look for.

A sleeping bag is one of the most important items you can put in your pack, so make sure to give it a decent allotment in the weight game.

SHELL FABRIC

Ripstop nylon is the strongest of shell fabric featured in this article. This material is tough and durable and will last you for ages.

Nylon is also a great option, as it’s a durable lightweight fabric. Polyester is the third shell fabric featured in this article, and it’s still a durable option, but a little bit heavier than nylon.

All in all, don’t get too caught up about the shell fabric of your sleeping bag unless you’re going to be hiking in really rugged terrain or tend to camp under the stars where your bag could suffer from shredding on rocks or branches.

SIZE

Most sleeping bags are tailored to fit a 6 foot hiker or smaller. If you like your bag to be a bit roomier, then a long size would be a better option for you.

If you’re shorter than 5 foot, it might be a good idea to get a short bag – save yourself weight and space in your pack!

Rectangular shaped bags will offer more room for moving around while you’re sleeping, so if you know you’re an active sleeper, you should consider a rectangular or semi-rectangular shaped bag. Mummy bags are going to be more lightweight, but are more restrictive for sleeping options.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Mummy

The mummy style is one of the most popular designs for backpacking sleeping bags. This design follows the shape of your body. The bag is wider around your shoulders and head, and slimmer towards your legs and feet.

The mummy style is most comfortable for hikers who sleep on either their backs or their stomachs. They are also the warmest option available in terms of sleeping bag shape.

Fitted hood

A fitted hood is a huge plus for a synthetic sleeping bag. It will give your head some loft and warmth and can help serve as a pillow bank. I mean, who doesn’t want a warm fluffy hood covering their head while they sleep?

Some of the hoods on the synthetic bags featured in this article have a drawstring cord. With them, you can tighten the hood to your preference of fit.

External stash pocket

An external stash pocket on a synthetic sleeping bag is a pocket on the exterior of the bag for added gear storage.

Vaulted footbox

A vaulted footbox is a part of the bag that encapsulates your feet. It provides loft underneath them to keep them warm. It also helps blood flow evenly while you’re sleeping. After a long day of trekking in the mountains, you don’t want to have to worry about the comfortability of your feet. A vaulted footbox is a sure thing for comfort.

No draft collar

A no draft collar in a synthetic sleeping bag is an extra layer of material that’s been added around the neck portion of the bag to prevent heat from escaping and to not let cold air in.

Semi rectangular

The semi-rectangular shape of a synthetic sleeping bag is a mix between a rectangular shape and a mummy bag. It offers a little more room for those who are active sleepers without taking up too much space in your pack.

Liner loops

Liner loops are featured in a couple of the synthetic sleeping bags in this article. These are internal loops inside the sleeping bag that you can tie your sleeping bag liner to to prevent it from falling down while you’re sleeping.

If you’re an active sleeper and you find your sleeping bag liner often at the bottom of your bag when you wake up, these would be a huge plus. If you don’t sleep with a liner, they could be unnecessary.

Check out this article for more info about the benefits of sleeping bag liners.

Sleeping pad sleeve

A sleeping pad sleeve is an extra layer of material that’s attached to the bottom of a synthetic sleeping bag that can hold your sleeping pad. This assures that your sleeping pad won’t move about while you’re sleeping, and will prevent you from rolling off.

BEST 4-SEASON BACKPACKING TENT

If you consider other tents on this list as shelters, The North Face VE 25 is a bunker. It’s a part of The North Face Summit Series which is designed for extreme conditions and is tested by their athletes. While it would be considered overkill for most popular hiking destinations, it’s an excellent choice for extreme conditions.

We loved how well the VE 25 holds up in serious weather. We’re talking loads of snow, ice, wind, and rain. It’s the kind of tent that will save your butt in harsh winter conditions and that’s why it’s our choice for the best 4-season option. It’s extremely liveable which is a big plus for those tent bound days. The inner tent has good tension so it doesn’t flap in the wind. It also has great ventilation, the roof can zip open which provides some airflow.

The biggest downside is it is really big and really heavy, but that comes with this type of expedition tent. Its performance in high winds could be better. Over 50 mph, the tent starts to struggle. The back of the tent is so broad that it really takes a beating. It’s difficult to set up and take down in these high wind conditions. This is a common disadvantage of high volume tents.

If you tend to camp in windy conditions, take a look at the Hilleberg Nallo 2 that is also featured on this list.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear UltaMid 2

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 4P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 63.0 sq ft
  • Weight: 1 lbs 07 oz
  • Season: 4-Season
Features
  • Outstanding Durability
  • Exceptional Quality
  • Super Lightweight
  • Incredibly Roomy

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 is a super light backpacking tent that weighs just over a pound. Unlike many other ultralight options, it doesn’t sacrifice interior space to cut weight. It’s a great option for any long distance adventure where your tent becomes your home for weeks, months, or maybe even years.

What we love the most about this tent is its spaciousness. It feels like the palace of light backpacking tents. It has a tepee, pyramid shape and is set up by placing two attached trekking poles in the middle of the tent. This makes it super roomy and gives you a ton of headroom, a thru-hiker or bikepackers dream. If you’re camping with friends, be aware that your tent will most likely become the hangout space. The construction and design of the Ultamid 2 is top notch and well thought out. It’s made of DCF (Dyneema composite fabric) which is super strong and has no stretch to it so it won’t sag like nylon when it gets wet.

All this spaciousness comes at a cost and not just when it comes to cash. The footprint of this thing is huge so you need a campsite that is large enough to be able to pitch it. If you plan to camp in the desert or in open plains it shouldn’t be an issue but it can make it impossible to use in dense woods or forests. Another bummer is the pole support in the middle means no morning cuddles with your partner.

Want an even bigger tent? Hyperlite also makes a 4-person version of the Ultamid.

The North Face Mountain 25

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P
  • Doors: 2
  • Floor Area: 32.3 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: Yes
  • Weight: 9 lbs 13 oz
  • Packed Size: 24 x 7 Inches
  • Peak Height: N/A
  • Packed Weight: 9 lbs. 13 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 4
  • Vestibule Area: 8 Square Feet in front, 3 Square Feet in Back
Features
  • Glow in the Dark, Color-Coded Zippers
  • Rainfly Has Welded Reinforcements and a Port Window
  • Multiple Vents Prevent Condensation From Building Up Inside The Tent
  • Dual Entry Front Vestibule For Easy In/Out

The North Face Mountain 25 is a sturdy four season shelter option with features that ensure a dry and warm night throughout Mother Nature’s worst storm.

This tent is designed for the ease of the mountaineer using it. It comes with color coded and reflective zippers, to help you with the setup and so you can find it in the dark. The front of the tent has a large, 8 square foot vestibule, roomy enough for all your gear. The vestibule also has dual entry, making it easy to get in and out of.

This shelter comes with a small window, so you can peek outside at the freshly fallen snow as you wake up. The window has been cold-crack tested, and is foolproof to -60° F. This tent includes the footprint.

This tent can be a little difficult to setup the first couple of times, so make sure you give it a trial run or two before you hit the high alpine.

Hilleberg Nallo 2

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P / 4P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 28.0 sq ft
  • Weight: 5 lbs 05 oz
  • Season: 4-Season
Features
  • Very lightweight
  • Tunnel construction
  • Separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching

The Hilleberg Nallo 2 is a tunnel tent that was designed for high winds and tough conditions.

What we love about this tent is how well it balances strength and weight. It’s tough enough to handle storms and powerful winds. The pole sleeves can fit an extra set of poles, which makes the tent much stronger. Also, the fly goes all the way to the ground, which prevents splashback and draft.

The biggest downside of the Nallo is it underperforms when it comes to heavy snow loading. If you get caught in a snowstorm, either you’d need to get out (or convince your hiking partner to get out) and knock snow off the roof and vestibule to prevent the poles from bending.

If you’re looking for a tent that can handle extreme winter conditions, have a look at The North Face VE25, which is also featured on this list.

Nemo Kunai

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 26.0 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: No
  • Weight: 4 lbs 13 oz
  • Season: 4-Season
  • Number of Poles: 2
Features
  • Double-Walled Construction Prevents Condensation From Forming, Keeping You Warmer At Night
  • Stuff Sack Included For Convenient Storage
  • Quick And Easy Set-up
Nemo Kunai backpacking tent

The Nemo Kunai is a 4-season tent that was designed for short and light mountaineering trips.

What we love about the Kunai is it’s only 4 pounds, which is light for a 4-season winter tent. It has a double wall construction, so the inner isn’t mesh, it’s fully lined. So basically it’s like having two tents. This design is great for insulation and strength. The Kunai can handle extreme weather from strong winds to snowstorms.

The double wall is great for staying warm and dry but we were concerned about the airflow and condensation. The large vents on the inner tent worked great at keeping the tent ventilated in cool weather. It would be way too warm for summer camping, but that’s not what it’s built for.

The Nemo Kunai also comes in a 3-person model.

Marmot Thor 2P

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P
  • Doors: 2
  • Floor Area: 38.0 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: No
  • Height: 44 Inches
  • Weight: 9 lbs 23 oz
  • Packed Size: 8 x 20 Inches
  • Peak Height: 44 Inches
  • Packed Weight: 10 lbs. 7 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 6
  • Vestibule Area: 10 Square Feet
Features
  • Seamed Taped Rainfly and Floor
  • Vents For Maximum Airflow To Prevent Condensation Inside The Tent
  • Near Vertical Walls Provide Extra Space
  • Design Allows for Various Pitch Setups Depending On Your Needs

The Marmot Thor 2P is a 4-season shelter that is spacious and durable.

Meant for trekking at alpine levels, this tent will keep you dry in a storm. The rainfly of this tent is seam sealed and provides two large vestibules on either side of the tent, enough coverage for you and your partner. The rainfly also has two vents, to help prevent condensation inside your vestibule when it’s dumping outside.

The pole design of Marmot’s Thor creates vertical walls inside the tent, creating a spacious interior for you and your partner. This tent also has several storage pockets inside of the tent for all your belongings.

This tent offers different pitching setups. For a more minimalist hiker, you can set the tent up using the rainfly, poles, and footprint. Although when using the tent in the winter, you will likely want the warmth the tent can provide with a full body set up.

Whatever your outdoor gig is, this tent is a versatile, reliable, year-round option.

The Marmot Thor also comes in a 3-person version.

Black Diamond Firstlight 3P

Specs
  • Capacity: 2P / 3P
  • Doors: 1
  • Floor Area: 33.0 sq ft
  • Footprint Included: No
  • Weight: 4 lbs 01 oz
  • Packed Size: 7 x 9 Inches
  • Peak Height: 44 Inches
  • Packed Weight: 4 lbs. 1 oz.
  • Number of Poles: 2
  • Vestibule Area: N/A
Features
  • Ultralight
  • Zippered Mesh Panels Provide Ventilation
  • Internal Mesh Pockets
  • Featherlite Poles

The Black Diamond FirstLight is a great option for the ultralight hiker who frequents alpine heights often.

This tent weighs about four pounds and is a quality shelter for rain, snow, hail, or any other stormy weather conditions Mother Nature is sending your way. It will keep you warm and dry and it will be light on your back.

That being said, there are some features you will miss on this tent that other tents in this article have. This tent doesn’t come with a large vestibule for gear storage, so whatever gear you have with you will either have to be waterproof, or will have to be inside your tent with you.

Due to the lack of vestibule space, the 3-person version of this tent is a better option for a hiker duo and all their gear, whereas three people and all of their gear would be a very tight squeeze. This shelter does have two internal mesh pockets, which will help with gear storage.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FOUR SEASON TENT

FABRIC

Several of the tents in this article are pieced together with nylon (or ripstop nylon – a tougher version of nylon that prevents shredding), polyester, or another kind of fabric that is specific to the brand.

Different fabrics offer different weights and toughness. Nylon may be lighter than polyester, but it will rip more easily, unless it’s ripstop nylon, which is an expensive fabric. Finding the right balance between price, weight, and durability is a bit of a chore, but you’ll thank yourself later when it’s storming outside and you have a durable and solid shelter.

In addition, many of the fabrics are treated with some type of waterproofing technique, such as a silicone treatment. This is a huge benefit because it adds to your tent’s ability to withstand rain, which is often unexpected in the backcountry.

FEATURES

Four season tents can get quite fancy with their designs. And who doesn’t like all the cool features a shelter can offer?

A large vestibule is a great feature for a four season tent, where you’ll likely be carrying more gear than you usually would. A spacious floor area is a great benefit, because you can stretch out without feeling cramped.

But with every feature you add, you are also adding weight to your back, meaning the tent will be heavier to carry up the mountain you’re climbing.

Decide which features are most important to you and go from there. Is it important to you for your tent to have a window? Or do you prefer a tent with two doors, because your partner will be with you, and you don’t want to have to crawl over them to get outside?

Answering these questions is your first step to deciding which four season tent is best for you. Check out this guide by REI to learn more about what features four season tents have.

LONGEVITY

A four season tent is an investment, so it’s important that this tent will last you many years. There are steps that you can take to make sure your tent will last you a long time.

Making sure your tent is clean of debris when you’re packing it up is a great first step, and folding and rolling the tent into your pack is always a better option than stuffing it in your backpack.

Buying a footprint for your tent will also help prolong the life of your tent. Many of the tents featured in this article either include a footprint or one is available but sold separately.

Because you will likely be camping in the wintertime with a four season tent, check out this article by REI about winter camping basics.

SPACE

Companies normally measure the space of a tent in two ways: the square footage of the floor area, and the space offered by a vestibule (if your tent has one).

How many people you plan to fit into your tent will depend how you use this space.

If your tent has a vestibule, that’s a great spot for gear storage. If not, you have to consider that your gear will either need to be completely waterproof, or it will be inside your tent with you.

Everyone likes to have a palace for a tent, but extra space can add the most weight to a tent. Figure out what gear and who will be in the tent with you, and go from there.

WEIGHT

Possibly the most important feature of picking a four season tent is the weight.

Four season tents are heavier than three season tents for obvious reasons. They are made of waterproof material, often have more poles to withstand strong winds and storms. They also tend to include other features that make your tent bombproof in a storm.

With these features comes a heavier weight, but some of the time it’s worth it. Decide which features you can’t live without, then target a tent that has those, and nothing more.

VENTILATION

Several of the tents featured in this article come with vents and awnings that will bring air into your tent and help you not feel stuffy inside. It’s essential that your tent has some mode of ventilation when camping in the cold because otherwise all of your hot breath will build up condensation inside the tent and actually make you colder rather than warmer.

Some tents also come with mesh panels that you can open up to let the air in. Both are great options for a ventilation system.

PRICE

A four season tent is definitely an investment. You will likely be spending over $400 for your tent, which isn’t cheap.

Make sure when you make your purchase that the tent is exactly what you’re looking for, and make certain you’re willing to take care of the tent for years to come. A shelter is arguably the most important piece of gear you can carry with you, so you’re likely going to be spending a pretty penny.

FEATURES EXPLAINED ABOUT THE BEST FOUR SEASON TENTS

Vestibule

A vestibule is an exterior chamber of your tent that you can use for gear storage. It usually doesn’t have a floor, but it is typically waterproof. Therefore, it’s a safe place to stash your gear while you’re hunkering down during a storm.

Vestibules come in several shapes and sizes, some are larger than others, but they are a great thing to have, so you don’t have to store your gear inside your tent with you.

Footprint

A footprint is a ground layer for your tent. Footprints are often sold separately, but they sometimes come with the tent. The footprint that comes with your tent is usually your best option. This is because their shape is the same as your tent and can align with the grommet. You can also use any groundsheet as a footprint

A footprint will help elongate the life of your tent.

Seam taped

When a tent is seam taped it means that all of the seams of your tent have been reinforced with a waterproof material to ensure waterproofing.

Vents/awnings

Vents are used to help let the air in your tent to negate a stuffy environment while you’re inside your tent. Just as you open the windows in your home sometimes, a vent can offer the same benefit for your home away from home.

Awnings help rain stay directly off the top of your tent, and can curb the rain in a direction that will help prevent water atop your tent.

Both are beneficial for comfortability and waterproofing.

Port window

A port window is a small, usually rubber window built into the vestibule or outer layer of your tent. It’s your window to look outside in the morning and see what kind of conditions you’re in for that day.

This isn’t a necessary feature, but it’s pretty cool.

Welded reinforcements

These are areas where there is double the fabric, to ensure that when tension is applied to this area of the tent, it won’t rip or shred. Welded reinforcements on the tents featured in this article are in the corners of the tent.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BACKPACKING TARP

When picking out a backpacking tarp, knowing what you will be using it for is important. Ask yourself a few key questions before deciding which tarp is right for you. Like:

  • Where will I be using the tarp the most?
  • What do I plan on using the tarp for – as a primary shelter, an emergency back-up, or a casual awning while camping?
  • Do I plan on taking it out on solo backpacking trips, or will I be backpacking with the whole family or a bunch of friends?
  • Will I be taking the tarp to high elevations where weather patterns are inconsistent?

Ask yourself all of these questions and then read through our considerations below so you know just what you’re looking for before deciding which tarp to buy off our list above.

It’s also important to know how to set up your tarp once you make your final decision. There are many different ways to pitch a tarp, and knowing how to set it up to suit your needs is essential for a successful tarping experience.

Check out this how-to guide from REI about how to set up your tarp in several different configurations to find some insight into which tarp from the list above can best be used for your ideal configuration.

USE

When deciding what type of backpacking tarp you want, you first have to ask yourself what you’ll be using the tarp for. Will you be using your tarp as a quick shade during hot summer days? Or will you be relying on your tarp to keep you dry during sudden rain storms?

Differentiating between these options is important, and it’s also important to decide if you’ll be using your tarp as your primary shelter while backpacking. A tarp is such a versatile piece of gear, and deciding what you’ll be using yours for the most is the first step to finding which one is right for you.

Once you’ve figured out what you’ll be using your tarp for the most, look for specifications in each tarp that cater to your needs. If you plan to use the tarp to shelter you from rain, make sure you get a tarp with waterproof treated fabric. If you plan to use your tarp as your shelter, make sure you pick one that allows for versatile pitching options.

SEASONS

Almost all tarps are built to withstand summer and spring weather, but if you plan on backpacking through the months where the colors of the leaves are changing, it’s important to get a 3-season tarp. This will ensure that your tarp will keep you warm AND dry during a storm.

SIZE

Size is a factor similar to weight. When determining what size tarp you need, consider first what you’ll be using it for. If you plan to use your tarp on family backcountry outings, you probably need a larger sized tarp. If it’ll just be you on a thru-hike across the country, you’ll need a smaller size.

FABRIC

Most of the tarps in this article are made of ripstop nylon, which is a lightweight material that doesn’t rip easily. Ripstop nylon is a great fabric for you to count on as a shelter or as a quick shade during your adventure.

If you know you’ll be taking your tarp into the backcountry where there could be rain, make sure the fabric of your tarp has been coated with a water-repelling treatment. You will thank yourself later when you don’t wake up soaking wet from the previous night’s rain storm.

A lot of the tarps in this article also have double layers of fabric on corners of the tarp. These extra layers of fabric in the high-use areas of the tarp improve its durability and guarantees that you tarp won’t rip from overuse.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

RIPSTOP NYLON

Ripstop nylon is the most commonly used fabric in the tarps featured in this article. Using a crosshatch pattern, ripstop nylon is woven with a sewing technique that prevents against ripping or tearing.

Nylon is already waterproof, but adding this sewing technique ensures the tarp will be durable in addition to waterproof.

REINFORCED ANCHOR POINTS

Anchor points are the areas of your tarp where you will tie a string to create a taut pitch. Anchor points are strategically placed so you can pitch the most common tarp configurations. Several tarps in this article have 6, 8, 10, or even 14 anchor points. They usually look like round metal holes dispersed evenly over the corners and edges of the tarp.

When anchor points are reinforced, it simply means that there is a double layer of fabric fitted to this area of the tarp. It allows you to put the pressure on this area of the tarp, such as you might when tightening a cord to create a taut pitch, and have the relief that it won’t rip or loosen the fabric.

TAPED SEAMS

Another waterproof technique, taped seams means all the seams of your tarp are taped with a waterproof material that will ensure that no water or moisture will get in the inside of your tarp.

GUY LINES

A guy line is a rope or cable used to tighten something. In this case, a tarp. You will use guy lines through anchor points to create a taut pitch with whatever tarp configuration you choose.

Some of the tarps in this article come with pre-measured guy lines. This is a blessing because you won’t have excess rope, and you won’t have to spend time trying to decide what is the best length.

Several of the guy lines are reflective, an added bonus that will help identify your tent after your nightly campfire and prevent you from tripping over them in the night.

LINE-LOCK TENSIONERS

Line-lock tensioners are designed to ease the tightening process of your guy lines when pitching your tarp.

Once your tarp is basically set up, you can go around and tighten your line-lock tensioners, located on your guy lines. You do this by holding the cord that is staked into the ground, while pulling down on the loose cord connected to the guy line by a line-lock tensioner.

Line-lock tensioners are a blessing in getting a taut pitch and basically do the hard work for you. They can be a bit confusing at first, but think of it like tightening a buckle on a life jacket, only on a much smaller scale.

If you find you’re having a hard time using your line-lock tensioners, check out this helpful video.

VERSATILE SETUP CONFIGURATIONS

There are several ways to set up a tarp. Some of the most common are an A-Frame tent setup, an awning, or flat. When getting a new tarp, it’s fun to play around with different setup configurations to learn what would be your best option for different circumstances.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HIKING BRA

BRA SUPPORT

Bra support is determined in three categories, low impact, medium impact and high impact. These different impact categories will determine how your bra fits and whether the bra helps with bounce control. Here are definitions for the different types of impact to help you decide which one is for you:

Low Impact

Bras with low impact support are usually the most comfortable fit. These bras are not tight fitting and are often a great option for women with small breasts or as a T-shirt bra. This level of impact is not the best option if you are looking for a sports bra with excellent bounce control.

Medium Impact

A medium impact bra is a good balance between comfort and support. These bras will help with bounce control, will often fit a bit tighter than a low impact bra (but still be comfortable) and often have a supportive strap at the bottom of the bra. A medium impact bra is a sure thing for all outdoor activities.

High Impact

A high impact bra is a great option for the lady with a large chest looking for guaranteed support. These bras are designed to hold all of your curves in place and control bounce completely. These bras will fit tightly, but can still be comfortable. If this sounds like the level of impact you need, find a fabric that you feel is comfortable and a high impact bra to match.

Learn more here about the different types of sports bra support here.

STRAP STYLE

Sports bras can come in all different kinds of strap styles. There is tank top, crisscross (meaning the straps cross each other in the back of the bra), halter, racerback, hook-and-eye, and countless others. Some strap styles are crazy cute, and can draw you to a sports bra because of the fun design.

Bras with a hook-and-eye clasp are often bras that are tank top style and are more supportive, offering better weight control for women with large chests. Some sports bras can be versatile, allowing the straps to go several different ways, depending on what you like or need to match with your tank top that day. To find a strap style that you prefer, try on different sports bras and see if a particular strap style offers you the support you need.

FABRIC

Different fabrics will ensure the sports bra has different qualities. Merino Wool (a very soft wool that is grown on merino sheep) for example will ensure that your sports bra is very soft. A nylon bra is typically very quick drying. Think about your needs – will you be using your bra on long backpacking trips where you’ll be swimming in lakes and need something that will dry quickly? Or do you prefer a sports bra that is comfortable? Is there a particular fabric that doesn’t work for your body? Make sure to consider all of these things before making your final decision.

SUPPORT STYLE

There are two different support styles your bra can be: encapsulation and compression. This means that the bra has individual cups (encapsulation) or one piece of fabric that comprises the front of the sports bra (compression). Compression sports bras are usually ideal for women with smaller chests, and encapsulation sports bras are great for women with larger chests. The encapsulation support style will give you more cleavage than a compression sports bra.

SIZE

The size of sports bra you need will be determined on the measurements that is around your chest. Cup sizes A and B can usually fit into a small, cup size C can usually fit into a medium, and cup sizes D and above can usually fit into a large or extra large.

Strap style is important here, because if you’re looking for a more supportive bra, a wide strap will help distribute your chest weight. When determining size, also pay attention to the side panels of the bra which will also help you with support. Learn more about how a women’s sports bra should fit here.

PRICE

A good sports bra can cost a pretty penny. How well you care for your sports bra will determine its lifetime. A good sports bra can withstand all of your outdoor adventures for years to come. That being said, there are many affordable options out there and finding your perfect fit at your perfect price IS possible.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BOUNCE CONTROL

It’s natural for breasts of any size to bounce up and down while we are hiking or trail running. A bra with bounce control offers support targeted at keeping the girls in place while you’re on the go.

UNDER BUST PANEL

This means that the sports bra has a band at the bottom of the bra which helps provide support when keeping the girls up throughout the day. The panel can either be comfortable and supportive, or at times can dig into your skin and cause discomfort. Make sure that you find a sports bra with a secure panel, to ensure comfort throughout your hike or run.

SEAMLESS CONSTRUCTION

When a sports bra has a seamless construction, it means that the bra is one solid piece of fabric, instead of several pieces sewn together. A seamless construction means that there aren’t any fabric edges on the sports bra that can cause chafing and discomfort.

DOUBLE LINED CHEST

A double lined chest on a sports bra means that the front panel of the sports bra has two pieces of fabric instead of just one. This is a great thing because it provides more coverage than a single lined chest, and can help prevent against nipping.

ENCASED UNDERWIRE

This means that the bra has an underwire, to help support and shape the bra correctly to your body, but that the underwire is encased in fabric. Having an underwire that is encased in fabric means that the wire shouldn’t be poking out at you for the lifetime of the bra.

ExOfficio also treats it’s clothing with an antimicrobial treatment to help control odors throughout the day. It is impossible to guarantee you won’t smell after a day in the mountains, but ExOfficio helps control that odor in case you need to wear the underwear for multiple outings on a long-term backpacking trip.

The thin nylon these panties are made of provides breathability and won’t leave you drenched in sweat at the end of your hike. These underwear fit true to size.

Merino wool is a common fabric for many Icebreaker products, because of the soft-as-skin feel it provides that is as comfortable as can be. These undies are no exception.

Merino wool is derived from merino sheep, and is finer and softer than many other fabrics, as well as itch-free. A good option for those with sensitive skin, merino wool doesn’t seem to irritate skin as much as other fabrics tend to.

In addition, these undies are quick-drying, breathable, and naturally odor eliminating. They won’t ride up and will stay in place for your entire hike, leaving you wedgie-free throughout your adventure.

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Full-Cut Briefs

You can hand wash or machine wash these underwear, making them versatile for long backpacking trips where you tend to wash clothes on the go. Similar to other ExOfficio products, these underwear are treated with an antimicrobial treatment that provides odor elimination.

Similar to the Give-N-Go Sport Mesh Bikini, these are made of the same mesh material that is breathable, comfortable, and quick-drying. These undies are a higher rise, meaning they sit a bit above your hips.

Icebreaker Sprite Hot Pants

BEST FOR:  THE AEROBIC HIKER

Icebreakers Sprite Hot Pants are essentially a boy short for the outdoor female, but a little shorter than a boy short you may be used to seeing.

The inseam on these shorts is 1.5 inches, which provides a bit more coverage on the legs for a hiker who maybe enjoys some trail running from time to time. The thin merino wool these underwear are made of is stretchy, but they hold true to size, so they won’t bunch up on you throughout the day.

These would also be a great option to throw on at the end of your hiking day, when you reach camp or for just lounging around at home. These panties are so comfortable you’ll will want to live in them.

Icebreakers Give-N-Go Sports Mesh Bikini panties will also stay put throughout the day, and they offer a bit more coverage than the Icebreaker Give-N-Go Briefs. These undies come in several different fun color combos too, from pink and purple, to blue and teal, you are sure to find something to your liking. Take note that customers think that these hiking underwear tend to run a bit large.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S HIKING UNDERWEAR

FABRIC

What kind of fabric you choose for your hiking underwear is a make or break factor in how you will feel throughout your hike. Cotton isn’t the best choice, because it doesn’t breathe well. Also, cotton isn’t a quick-drying or moisture-wicking material.

The fabrics we chose in this article are mainly nylon, polyester, and merino wool. These are fabrics that will keep you comfortable throughout the day, but also keep you as dry as possible. These fabrics are also naturally odor-eliminating, and will help make sure you don’t chafe during your hike.

UNDERWEAR STYLE

There are several different underwear styles, and the ones outlined in this article are bikini style, thong, and boy short. Ranging in various styles of coverage, the boy short offers the most coverage, while a thong offers the least.

It is common that you will experience chafe in places you never thought possible while on an extended backpacking trip, and underwear with more coverage can help aid in that. But everyone’s a little different; some people don’t chafe at all and prefer less coverage with their underwear. Try out a couple of styles and see what works best for you.

And don’t worry about having panty lines because of your underwear, most of the underwear in this article are popular because they don’t leave you with panty lines showing.

QUICK DRYING / MOISTURE WICKING

When you’re hiking in the mountains, especially on hot summer days, you will get sweaty. Wearing a fabric that isn’t moisture-wicking will soil your underwear, leaving wet drawers against your skin, which can cause painful abrasion and chafing.

Having underwear that are moisture-wicking will leave you as dry as possible and you will be oh so thankful, we promise. Quick-drying underwear is another plus, because when you are washing your underwear on the go, they will dry faster than underwear that aren’t quick-drying.

Quick-drying underwear can also double as a swimsuit bottom on a long backpacking trip. With quick-drying underwear, you can jump in the lake worry free knowing that your underwear will dry in no time!

FIT

Look for a pair of underwear that fit snug, but not too tight. You don’t want to have loose fitting underwear that can bunch up on you due to the extra fabric, and you don’t want to have something that is too tight and constrictive while you hike.

Added features to a comfortable fit are tagless and seamless designs. Removing a tag can rid you of an itchy annoyance throughout your day, and what a relief that can be! A seamless design gets rid of the excess material that can cause chafe or irritation throughout your hike.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

MERINO WOOL

Merino wool is the softest type of wool, and is derived from the merino sheep. Properties of this wool are softness, shine and breathability. Merino wool is known to be extremely comfortable in clothing, is naturally odor eliminating, breathable, and durable. It is a great option for fabric in women’s hiking underwear.

ANTIMICROBIAL FABRIC

Antimicrobial fabric is treated with antimicrobial technology to help eliminate odors while you are on your adventure. This can be especially important for long backpacking trips, where you might be wearing the same pair of undies for several days and want to stay smelling fresh.

FAIR TRADE CERTIFIED

Patagonia is a leader in the outdoor industry for using recycled material and for their clothing being Fair Trade Certified in Sewing. This means that the company certifies a living wage for the manufacturers of the clothing and ensures safe working conditions for farmers.

Just about everybody gets blisters or some kind of foot pain when breaking into mountaineering. Finding the best mountaineering socks for you can be frustrating, because you want something that prevents discomfort instead of causes it. So where do you start?

Mountaineering boots are typically ankle length or taller, so mountaineering socks are usually a crew length (they reach to your calf) or knee height. This is to prevent your lower leg and ankles from chafing against your boots and causing abrasion. Taller socks also help keep you warm while you’re hiking in the frigid mountain air. There are many factors to consider when choosing a reliable sock for snow travel, so we broke down the ten best options for you here.

Reviews - The Best Socks for Mountaineering

Smartwool PhD Medium

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Majority Merino Wool
  • Height: Knee High
  • Cushioning: Medium
Features
  • Mesh Ventilation Zones
  • Strategically Placed Cushioning
  • Seamless Toes

BEST FOR: MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS

The Smartwool PhD Ski Medium Socks have a popular reputation for keeping feet dry and warm in very cold/wet temps. These socks are known to keep their size and shape even after several washes, so you don’t have to worry about them stretching out.

Smartwool strategically placed a cushion in the front shin of these socks to prevent abrasion from your boots while you’re in the mountains. These form-fitting socks are true to size and won’t take up too much room in your mountaineering boot.

Smartwool PhD Ultra Light

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Merino Wool/Nylon
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Light
Features
  • Ultralight Sock
  • Virtually Seamless
  • Mesh Ventilation Zones

BEST FOR: THE MINIMALIST

Smartwool is appealing to the ultralight community with this version of it’s PhD mountaineering socks. Smartwool makes several mountaineering socks, all of which fit like a dream, but the ultralight version tends to be the most form fitting. These socks are made with a double elastic system that helps the sock stretch up and over your calf and the mix of wool and nylon is extremely soft and comfortable.

The Ultralight Pattern Sock is also known to be great for moisture management because it’s lightly cushioned and has ventilation zones that increase breathability. This sock will keep you warm and it won’t make you suffer from blisters induced by sweaty feet in floppy socks.

Darn Tough Over-The-Calf Cushion

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Majority Merino Wool
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Medium
Features
  • Seamless Design
  • LIfetime Warranty
  • Mid-Level Cushioning Under Foot

BEST FOR: ALL MOUNTAINEERS

Darn Tough makes an outstanding sock for mountaineering with their proprietary Over-The-Cushion design, and it also comes in some seriously rad styles. These socks have a performance fit with cushioning at the bottom of the foot, around the arch, and near the ankle, all of which helps prevent against slipping, bunching and blisters.

Merino wool is the main fabric used to make these socks. It’s a quick drying material that’s also antimicrobial and moisture wicking. All of these features will help your feet stay warm and dry when your boots get wet while walking through thick snow, crossing a stream, or during an unexpected snow storm.

Another bonus: Darn Tough has the same warranty for all of their socks. If you get a hole in them, you get a free pair on the house. If you’ve ever tried Darn Tough socks before, it’s hard to go back to anything else.

Darn Tough Medium

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Majority Merino Wool
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Medium
Features
  • Merino Wool Repels Water/Odor
  • Shin Cushioning (to prevent abrasions against your legs while you hike)
  • Lifetime Warranty

BEST FOR: BEGINNING MOUNTAINEERS

Darn Tough is back at it again displaying unique and colorful designs with these mountaineering socks. Similar to their Over-The-Cushion socks, these socks have a performance fit design so you can put the sock on and not have to worry about bunching, blisters, or slipping.

The fabric of these socks is naturally moisture-wicking and odor eliminating, which means that after you get to your tent after a long day in the mountains, your socks won’t stink up the place.  These socks have it all: warmth, comfort, and odor eliminating fabric. Keep in mind that these socks are known to run large and are also versatile for more casual hiking.

Smartwool PhD Light Elite

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Merino Wool/Nylon
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Light
Features
  • Elastic Stitching Allows Greater Stretch
  • Mesh Zones Create Ventilation
  • Virtually Seamless

BEST FOR: THE AEROBIC MOUNTAINEER

My personal favorite option of Smartwool’s PhD mountaineering socks is their Light Elite option. These socks provide a bit more padding than the ultralight version, but still won’t bunch up while you tread through snow. These socks are warm and they’re sure to keep your feet nice and toasty in your boots no matter how cold the temperature.

These socks are made virtually seamless, which makes them feel invisible after you put them on. The lack of an evident seam also reduces toe irritation (AKA blisters) because it prevents your sensitive toes from rubbing against an uncomfortable seam. These socks are known to be one of the most comfortable mountaineering socks available on the market today.

Burton Weekend

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Majority Acrylic
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Medium
Features
  • Quick Drying
  • Low Profile Welted Cuffs (to keep the socks in place all day)
  • Elastic Arch and Leg Support

BEST FOR: SNOW SPORTS ATHLETE

Burton has a positive reputation among snow sport athletes for making reliable and durable snow gear. These Weekend Snowboard socks are no exception.

These are a good option for anyone who is looking for a mountaineering sock that isn’t wool (possibly because you could be allergic), but will still keep your feet warm and dry. The acrylic fabric these socks are made of is quick-drying and has a flat-stitched toe seam to help decrease chafing and prevent blisters. Cushioning placed on the instep, shins, and calves also provides superior comfort in laced boots.

The welted cuffs feature on these socks describe an elastic band sewn into the cuff (top) of the sock that will help them stay up through a day of adventure. These socks come as a single pair or as a two-pack for double the savings.

Smartwool PhD Light Elite

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Fabric: Merino Wool/Nylon
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: Light
Features
  • Lightweight Sock
  • IndestructaWool Technology Strategically Places Reinforcement Fibers (so your socks will have cushioning in all the right places and will last a lifetime)
  • Elastic Stitching Allows Greater Stretch

BEST FOR: THE LIGHTWEIGHT MOUNTAINEER

Another lightweight option in SmartWool’s PhD mountaineering sock line is the Ski Light Pattern. This style is similar to a compression sock, containing a touch more nylon fabric combined with Merino Wool than other SmartWool PhD options. The extra nylon keeps the sock feeling tighter than most, which can help to insulate your feet and keep the socks in place during long days on the trail or slopes.

The mapped out mesh zones in these socks also help aerate your feet in the backcountry. The virtually seamless design minimizes toe irritation and helps to prevent against blisters. The women-specific fit of these socks have a narrower profile than the male version.

Hotronic XLP PFI 50 Heat

Specs
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Height: Knee Length
  • Cushioning: None
Features
  • Hotronic Battery Heating (a battery used to heat mountaineering boots)
  • Fit Provides Pressure Distribution (to keep your feet feeling comfortably balanced all day long)
  • Mesh Ventilation

BEST FOR: THE COLD BLOODED

Combined with the proprietary Hotronic battery pack, these socks are a sure thing for warmth in the snow. The double cuff at the top of the sock allows for the insertion of the battery pack, which distributes 13.5 hours of warmth throughout the lower leg, achilles, ball of foot, and toes.

There are four different heat settings built into these mountaineering socks. Most mountaineers keep the heat setting on 1 or 2, and advise heat setting 3 or the “turbo” (heat setting 4) to warm up very cold toes, possibly at night when you’re no longer moving.

These socks are best when paired with a liner sock because the wiring underneath the foot can be uncomfortable or the heat can become too intense. Also, keep in mind that the socks are sold separately from the battery pack.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MOUNTAINEERING SOCKS

SOCK LINERS

The benefit of a sock liner is to have a thin layer between your feet and your mountaineering socks. Toe liner socks separate each of your toes, which prevents them from rubbing together Because toe liner socks keep friction to a minimum, they help to prevent nasty blisters from forming while trekking for long periods of time. If toe socks aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other great liner sock options to choose from.

Let’s be honest, during snow travel it’s expected that your feet are going to get wet. Liner socks provide your feet with a little assistance to prevent abrasion. In the beginning of the season, many mountaineers choose to start their adventures with sock liners and when their feet develop calluses throughout the season, they no longer need them. Toe liner socks are definitely worth looking into if you’re planning on mountaineering for any amount of time this winter.

FABRIC

The most common fabric for outdoor socks is usually Merino wool. Merino wool is derived from Merino sheep and is best known for being extremely soft and breathable. Merino wool is also moisture wicking, quick drying, and antimicrobial. What else could you ask for?

Some people are allergic to wool. Other great fabric options for mountaineering socks include nylon, polyester, acrylic, silk , spandex and others. Most outdoor socks are made of a few materials sewn together to create the most protective and comfortable sock. Finding out how your feet react to the elements and then finding a sock that caters to that is your best bet.

For example, if your feet are always cold and you can’t wear wool, silk is known to be extremely warm and lightweight. If you like a tighter fitting sock, finding a sock made of majority nylon material would benefit you because of its ability to stretch without ripping holes in your socks.

For more info about hiking and mountaineering sock fabrics, check out this article from REI about how to pick socks for the outdoors.

SIZE

Keep in mind that some mountaineers have to go half a size or a full size up in their mountaineering boots to make room for swollen feet and thick socks.

Socks that are too thick can cause overlapping in the fabric that can lead to cold feet. An extra thick sock can also lead to your foot sloshing around in your boot, while an extra thin sock can leave your feet cold and unprotected. Make sure when you’re trying on socks you are trying them on with your mountaineering boot to make certain it’s a comfortable match for you. You want a pair of socks that feel comfortable and provide support to you in the spots you need them to. It is also nice to have a knee length sock if your boots are tall and you want to prevent against slamming your shin against your boot when you’re walking.

INSOLES

A lot of people wear insoles with mountaineering boots in the backcountry.

An insole is a removable sole you can put in your shoes or boots. Insoles can help provide comfort and warmth, and also act as a deodorizer. Insoles can also help expand the life of your boots. Insoles can even assist with common foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, structural misalignment, and over-pronation. Learn more here.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CREW LENGTH

A crew length sock sits just above your ankle bone. It’s a typical length for most hiking socks, but can be a little short for mountaineering.

INSOLE

A removable sole of a shoe that mountaineers often use for comfort or warmth. Insoles can also help treat several foot conditions including plantar fasciitis.

LINER

A liner sock is a thin sock that you wear underneath your actual mountaineering socks to prevent blisters and chafing.

ENGINEERED ARCH SUPPORT

Several of the socks featured above have engineered arch support. Engineered arch support can be achieved several ways, including thicker fabric sewn around the arch area of the foot. If you have high arches, this can be a huge advantage to make your feet more comfortable. If you have flat feet, engineered arch support probably isn’t necessary. You can get your arches measured at an outfitter like REI and learn what type of support your foot needs.

SEAMLESS TOE CLOSURE

A seamless toe closure means that no two seams have been sewn together to create the toe box of this sock. This helps prevent against friction being created due to your foot or toes rubbing against that extra layer of fabric that would be there if a seam had been sewn.

REINFORCED HEELS AND TOES

Reinforced heels and toes are similar to engineered arch support, but the extra fabric is sewn specifically into the heels and toes of the sock. Heels and toes are common places where mountaineers can get blisters or experience pain when breaking in a new pair of socks or boots. Reinforced heels and toes means the socks have more cushioning around this area to aid in protection, comfort, and longevity.

INSTEP

The instep of the foot is the area between the ball of the foot and ankle. Knowing if you have a low or high instep will help you determine if you need arch support or not. REI employees can measure this for you.

WELTED CUFFS

A welted cuff is an elastic band that is sewn around the top rim of the sock to help the sock stay up while you’re wearing them.

HOTRONIC BATTERY

A Hotronic Battery is a battery used to heat up the corresponding mountaineering sock through wiring placed throughout the sock.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING CONVERTIBLE HIKING PANTS

CONVERTIBLE OR STANDARD

The biggest difference between a standard hiking pant and convertible hiking pants is obvious – convertible pants convert to shorts. Convertible pants are great for a multitude of weather conditions. For example, you may want to keep your pants on in the chilly mornings, but when the sun comes out midday, you might want to convert to hiking shorts.

The versatility that a convertible hiking pant offers is second to none. But some prefer a standard pant. If you’re in between, check out this guide to hiking pants to help you make your decision. Also, this list of the best pants for hiking is a great breakdown of both options.

COST

If you’re looking for an affordable all-around quality hiking pant, look for pants that are resistant to the elements. Water resistance is a blessing during rain, and you will thank yourself for having sun protective fabric in heat. The higher the price goes, the more comfortable the pant usually is, or the more features the pant has. Looking for a pant with more pockets? That’s your preference. Decide what features are most important to you, and go from there.

COMFORT/FIT

When you first begin hiking, there is nothing more important than feeling comfortable. Look for a pair of pants that move with your body instead of against it. A cinch waist or a belt will also help your pants stay up when bending over or moving about.

A soft fabric such as nylon will feel light on your skin while also being durable. Mesh pockets and gusseted crotch designs will help alleviate chafe and increase breathability. If you plan on being in rocky terrain, looking for a pant with coverage on the boot of the pant will help elongate the lifetime of the pant. REI does a great job in outlining key fabric properties in this article about what to wear hiking.

WATER RESISTANT/SUN PROTECTIVE

A pant that is built with water resistant and sun protective fabric is a double win. This ensures that in rain or shine your pant will be able to pull through and protect you from the elements. It’s important to note that water resistant does not mean waterproof, and amid a rain storm your pants will still soak through; but having a water resistant fabric will help the pants dry faster. Same thing goes for sun protective pants – this pant doesn’t guarantee you won’t get a sunburn, but it will help.

POCKETS

Some hikers prefer pants with several pockets, and some hikers simply don’t need them. It depends on the length of your hike, and the gear you’re bringing with you, as well as your personal preference. If you’re going on an overnight trip, you’re likely carrying a pack that can hold gear you otherwise might put in your pockets. If you’re doing a shorter day hike and prefer no pack, having pockets can be essential.

Pockets are built differently; some are mesh, a lightweight, comfortable fabric that provides breathability. Some pockets are zip shut, which is a secure option for valuable items. Make sure to pay attention to the types of pockets on the pants you choose so you’re not disappointed when you first wear them on a hike.
