Snowboarders are typically hoarders, collecting anything else their friends are trying to get rid of. If you’re smart, you can even piece together your entire boarding setup with second-hand equipment from friends. Once your setup is complete, you’re going to need somewhere to store everything. A good bag that actually fits your board isn’t easy to come by. Totes simply don’t cut it. Duffel bags are too small. Other options are awkward and leave your board prone to damage. Purchasing the best snowboard bag, however, will protect your gear, simplify transportation, and help you avoid being laughed at while lugging all your gear around.

Snowboard bags vary, which is why it’s important to think about what you will be using your bag for. Will it be more of a storage unit for your gear, staying in one place for long periods of time? Or will you be using it to travel from the Rockies to the Alps to the Andes? Would wheels make traveling much easier? Or are you going to be hauling your bag through the snow? A snowboard bag is the final piece in a complete snowboarding setup and there are plenty of options in this article.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD BAG

LOCKABLE ZIPPERS

Zippers, really? If you are going to be leaving your bag in a public place, a lockable zipper is recommended. These also come in handy when flying.

MATERIAL

All the bags included in this article are made with polyester. Polyester is a water-resistant fabric, so your gear will not get wet unless the weather is extreme. Bags with a thermoplastic backing protect your bag from the hard ground better than those without.

SIZE

Some people think it’s best to purchase the largest bag in order to get the most out of it. That’s not the case with a snowboard bag. Instead, try and get a bag that will fit snugly around your board. It’s much more difficult to transport a bag that slouches on the ends or has boards shifting around inside.

SHOULDER STRAP

Carrying a snowboard bag on your shoulder is much more comfortable than carrying it in your arms. If you buy a bag that comes with a strap, you will be able to carry your bag much longer distances. If you are flying with your bag and don’t want a bag with wheels, a shoulder strap is indispensable. On most bags, the shoulder strap is removable so you can choose to use it only when necessary.

WHEELS

What are you going to be using your bag for? If you’re going to be flying with your boards, then wheels will serve you well. However, if you are just tossing your snowboard bag in the back of your car and heading up to the mountains, wheels may not be necessary. A bag with wheels is more expensive, but often has many more features than a simple transport bag.

PADDED PROTECTION

Again, how do you plan on utilizing your bag? Traveling a bunch? Padded protection will serve you well. Driving to the mountains? Well, as long as you keep your bag stable, your boards won’t be damaged, so you can go without padding.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DUAL END HANDLES

If you can’t carry your bag alone, dual end handles will make carrying the bag between two people much easier. Before you purchase your bag, be sure to locate all of the different handles it has. Rolling bags typically have more options for transportation than simpler bags. For some, this may be a deal-breaker. For others, handles aren’t too important. Again, just think of how you want to utilize your bag.

COMPRESSION STRAPS

Straps on the inside or outside of your bag will really lock your board or boards into place. If not secured, boards can scratch against each other. Nothing is more frustrating than opening your bag at the slopes and finding a huge scratch on your snowboard.

LIFETIME WARRANTY

If you are going to put your bag through the wringer, the warranty should impact which bag you purchase. If you damage your bag years down the line, a company like Burton, Dakine, or Thule will replace it.

REMOVABLE INTERIOR BAGS

The most serious of boarders love this feature. It allows them to pack everything into one bag, or pack more boards into the main bag and carry their other equipment outside the bag. If you’re a beginner, it’s probably less of a necessity.
