THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A VHF MARINE RADIO

There are two basic types of VHF marine radios: handheld and fixed mount. Handheld radios are more mobile, can be used anywhere on your boat, and can be used even if the electrical systems on your boat are out. Fixed-mount radios have greater transmit power, connect to your boat’s batteries for longer battery life, and can be attached to a higher antenna for longer range. Your selection will depend on your boat and your needs. Handheld radios are standard on smaller boats; larger boats will often have a fixed-mount unit and one or more handhelds for backup.

 

CAN’T I JUST USE MY CELLPHONE?

Mobile phones are a great way to communicate, as long as you’re receiving. You can place a distress call, call someone onshore or communicate with friends on other boats, and your conversations will be private, unlike VHF radio conversations. 

Phones have serious limitations, though. You won’t always have access to a mobile signal. In an emergency, the closest source of aid is often a nearby vessel, and you can’t reach one by phone unless you have the phone number of someone on board. Almost all vessels have VHF radios, so you’ll be able to communicate with them even if you don’t have their numbers.

 

HANDHELD OR FIXED-MOUNT?

Handheld and fixed-mount VHF marine radios both have advantages and disadvantages, and you’ll have to consider which will meet your needs best.

Handheld VHF marine radios are compact and easily transportable. Many units float if dropped in water and many will trigger an automatic strobe signal or even a man-overboard alert if immersed. 

They have less transmit power than fixed-mount radios and typically have a shorter broadcast range. They may have limited battery life, especially if you frequently transmit at high power settings, but they will continue to work even if your boat’s electrical system goes out.

Fixed-mount VHF marine radios are usually mounted on your main control console. Some units allow a second-station capability with a remote mic that can be operated from a flybridge, cabin, or other location. 

They draw their power from your boat’s batteries and can usually broadcast at up to 25 Watts, with handheld units usually limited to 6 watts. They can also connect to an elevated antenna, which gives a considerably enhanced range.

Many smaller boats that operate primarily in inshore or inland waterways will not need more than a handheld unit. Many larger vessels carry a fixed-mount unit for regular use and one or more handheld units as backups or to allow communication between the boat and a group in a dinghy.

 

REMEMBER YOUR ANTENNA

Fixed-mount VHF marine radios are usually connected to an external antenna. The position of the antenna has a huge impact on the radio’s range. The higher the antenna, the longer the range. 

 

DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC)

Digital Selective Calling or DSC is a key feature on VHS Marine Radios. You will have to set up your DSC system with information specific to your boat. 

Once DSC is set up and activated you will be able to send a one-touch distress call that will identify your vessel and provide its location to emergency responders and other nearby vessels. This feature can be a lifesaver in an emergency. 

Digital Selective Calling may require your unit to be set up with your boat’s identifying information before it is usable. Many dealers will help you with this. Your DSC system will need to be connected to your vessel’s GPS, though most modern VHS marine radios have their own GPS. You will also need a Marine Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number to activate DSC.

 

AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS (AIS)

Many higher-end VHF marine radios are equipped with Automatic identification systems or AIS. An AIS-equipped unit will give you a continuous readout of the identity, location, and course of AIS-equipped vessels in your vicinity. Some will provide automatic collision alarms if courses present a collision hazard.

 

KNOW THE RULES

VHF radio conversations are public, and anyone within range and listening on the channel you’re using can hear them. There are laws and regulations governing the capacity and use of VHF radios, and there’s also an informal radio etiquette that has emerged to make communication efficient and avoid interfering with the needs of others.

VHF marine radios will hear only the strongest signal being broadcast on a given channel. Commercial VHF marine radios are limited to 25 watts of broadcast signal, and most have a 1-watt setting that you can use while communicating with a nearby vessel, which avoids a strong signal that may interfere with the conversations of other boaters.

It is illegal to use profanity in a VHF radio conversation. VHF conversations are supposed to be for “operational purposes”. A reasonable amount of social chatter is permitted, but you will want to keep it brief and to the point. 

Some radio channels are reserved for specific purposes.

  • Channel 16 is reserved for emergencies and making contact with other vessels. Most operators keep their radios on this channel. Once contact with another vessel is established you will move to another channel to clear channel 16 for potential emergency use. If you are conversing with a nearby vessel you will both reduce your broadcast power to 1 watt. 
  • Five channels are available for non-emergency ship-to-ship communication: 68, 69, 71, 72, and 78A.
  • If both vessels have MMSI numbers you can bypass the hailing channel and make a call directly to their radio using their MMSI number.
  • Channel 13 is reserved for navigational use between vessels or between a vessel and a bridge or lock operator. Channel 13 transmissions are limited to 1 watt.
  • Channel 6 is reserved for safety-related ship-to-ship communication, usually during search and rescue operations.
  • Channel 22A is reserved for communications with the Coast Guard.

Don’t use your VHF radio to communicate unless you are at sea; shore stations need a special permit.

TRANSMIT POWER

A radio’s transmit power, along with antenna height, controls broadcast range. Handheld VHF marine radios are limited to six watts of transmit power, fixed-mount units are limited to 25 watts. Most radios also have lower settings designed for short-range conversations.

 

DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC)

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) allows you to send a distress signal that identifies your vessel and its location with a single push of a button. To use DSC your unit must have an integral GPS or be connected to your vessel’s GPS, and you must enter your vessel’s Marine Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number.

 

AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS (AIS)

AIS systems broadcast an identifying signal to nearby vessels and provide a readout of the identity, location, and course of nearby vessels that are equipped with AIS. Many also have collision alarms that alert you to potential hazards.

 

WEATHER ALERT RECEPTION

The NOAA regularly broadcasts weather alerts for everything from local thunderstorms to incoming hurricanes. VHF marine radios with weather alert capability will automatically receive these alerts.

 

DOT MATRIX DISPLAY

Older or cheaper marine VHF radios may have a seven-segment LCD display. A dot-matrix display is brighter, clearer, and offers more information-display options.

 

LOUD HAILER/FOGHORN CAPABILITY

Many fixed-mount VHF marine radios offer a loud hailer capability, using an amplifier to boost your voice if you need to communicate with another vessel that does not have a radio. Many of these systems can also act as a foghorn to alert vessels to your presence in limited visibility conditions.

 

REMOTE SECOND STATION

A remote second station capability allows you to operate your fixed-mount radio from other locations on your boat. It usually uses a mobile control microphone that links to your radio with a short-range signal.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MARINE INVERTER

Lower-priced inverters produce a modified sine wave output, which is acceptable for less sensitive devices but may yield poor performance from more sensitive electronics. More expensive pure sine wave inverters produce output that is the same as outlet power and can be used with any device. Inverter/chargers also offer the ability to receive shore-based AC current and use it to charge your batteries. Remember that no inverter will create power. You’ll have to be sure that the drain on your inverter is not exceeding the capacity of your batteries!

 

UNDERSTAND INVERTERS

An inverter converts 12 volt DC battery power to 120 volt AC power. Most marine electronics and other devices designed purely for onboard use run on battery power, but if you want to use shore-based appliances on board you need 120 volt AC power, and that means you need an inverter. Inverters come in many types and sizes to meet many different needs. These are some of the common types.

Modified sine wave inverters produce AC current that mimics the characteristics of the power in your home, but doesn’t quite duplicate it. The distinguishing feature is relatively high harmonic resonance, which makes them incompatible with sensitive electronics, variable-speed electric motors, dimmer switches, and other devices that are picky about their power inputs. Modified sine wave inverters are often small and easily portable and are usually inexpensive. If your power needs are not extensive and do not involve delicate appliances they may serve your needs.

Pure sine wave inverters produce a current that is essentially identical to the output of your home’s electrical system. They are usually larger and more expensive than modified sine wave inverters but can be used with a wider range of devices.

Portable inverters are small, light, and can be easily carried from place to place. They may connect to your battery system through a cigarette lighter or by direct terminals. They usually have AC outlets that you can plug appliances into and often have a USB outlet for charging mobile devices. They are often limited in their output but can be excellent choices for occasional use or on smaller vessels. They can work from any 12 volt DC power source so they can be useful in a car or RV as well as a boat.

Fixed inverters and inverter/chargers are made to be a permanent installation. They don’t have electrical outlets but are wired into your boat’s electrical system. Inverter chargers turn your battery’s DC power into AC power but they can also be wired to shore-based power and used to charge your batteries.

Safety features are built into many inverters. These often include audible alerts when a parameter is approaching safety limits and automatic shutdown when safe limits are reached. The parameters often covered often include low or high input power, excessive demand, excessive temperature, and others.

Digital readouts give you information on your electrical system at a glance. Many inverters will give you a continuous indication of current demand, remaining battery power, and other key information.

Inverter power output is measured in watts. Most inverters have a limit for continuous load and another limit for peak load. Many AC appliances deliver a power surge on startup, so those peak loads are important.

Electromagnetic interference. Most inverters produce some degree of electromagnetic interference, which can interfere with communication or navigation equipment. Avoid installing or using an inverter close to your critical electronic equipment.

 

KNOW YOUR LOAD

You’ll need to know how much power you will need your inverter to produce at any one time. If you have a smaller inverter you may not be able to run more than a few appliances at the same time. You may be able to run the coffee maker or the microwave, but not both!

Review your onboard appliances, look at the watt ratings, and think about what items you may need to operate at the same time. Calculate the largest total watt load you expect to place on your inverter and try to select an inverter that can accept that load, or ideally a bit more.

 

KNOW YOUR BATTERIES

An inverter does not create power. The power comes from your batteries. If you buy a large inverter you may be able to plug in a lot of appliances but the load on your battery will be substantial and the battery may be depleted very quickly.

In general, the amp-hour output of your battery should be at least 20% of the inverter’s watt capacity. A 2000-watt inverter requires at least 400 Ah of battery capacity. If the inverter is drawing at full capacity it will still use 50% of your battery power in 1 hour.

It is usually not practical to run continuous-load devices like a refrigerator or air conditioner on inverter power unless you have a very large, high-capacity battery bank. Inverters are better suited to low-level continuous loads like operating a computer or short-term higher-drain loads like running a coffee maker or blender. 

 

GENERATOR OR INVERTER?

Both generators and inverters produce AC power. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Generators are not tied to your battery capacity and can even charge your battery. They are limited only by their capacity and the amount of fuel you have onboard. They are also bulky and can be noisy, and they require a substantial fuel supply that can be a fire hazard on board.

Inverters are silent, often portable, and easy to install, but they are limited by your battery capacity.

Most small boat owners prefer inverters, while generators are more often found on larger boats. Many owners of larger boats use a generator for peak loads, often in the evening, and battery charging and use an inverter during off-peak periods

 

INSTALLATION

Your inverter will probably be the largest single load on your battery when it is running at capacity, and your wiring should be able to handle that load. There are some places where inverters should not be installed.

  • Never install an inverter in a confined space with any possibility of flammable gas accumulation.
  • Never install an inverter close to critical communication or navigation equipment.

If you’re not sure you know what you’re doing, consult a professional. Fixed inverter-chargers should always be installed by a qualified marine electrician.

OUTPUT WAVEFORM

Marine inverters fall into two types: modified sine wave and pure sine wave. Without going into the (very) technical details, modified sine wave inverters produce a lower-quality current that may not be compatible with delicate or demanding devices. Pure sine wave inverters produce a current that is equal or superior to grid power. Some users report that their TV has less interference and a better image with a pure sine wave inverter than it does at home! Current quality is sometimes measured as harmonic resonance, which should be below 5%. Lower is better.

 

INVERTER TYPE

Inverters may be portable or fixed and are usually either pure inverters or inverter/chargers.

 

OUTPUT POWER

An inverter’s power output is measured in watts.

Maximum continuous power is the highest watt load that the inverter can handle on a continuing basis.

Peak power capacity measures the inverter’s capacity to handle power surges. This is an important feature because many AC appliances use a surge of power as they start.

 

OUTLETS

Portable inverters usually have power outlets that devices can be plugged into. They often have a mix of conventional 3-prong and USB outlets, so mobile devices can be charged without taking up a conventional outlet.

 

TERMINAL STUDS

Terminal studs are an easy, convenient, and effective way of connecting the battery to the inverter. Some portable inverters are set up to draw power through a cigarette lighter, but this may cause uneven power input.

 

ALERTS AND CUTOFFS

Many inverters use a system of audible alerts and automatic cutoffs for safety. An audible alert sounds when a monitored parameter is nearing an unsafe level and the device shuts off automatically when the safe level is exceeded. The measured parameters may include input power, power load, operating temperature, and others.

 

REMOTE CONTROLS

Some inverters accept remote control systems that allow them to be turned on and off or monitored from a distance.

 

NOISE FILTERING

Some inverters produce an audible and sometimes annoying hum when operating. Noise filtering reduces the inverter’s noise level.

 

INTELLIGENT CHARGING

Inverter/chargers usually have customized charging systems that deliver different power levels at different stages of charging. This charges the battery faster and extends its life.

 

AUTOMATIC SWITCHING

If you’re at a berth and charging your batteries you may also be using the offboard power supply to run your onboard appliances. Automatic switching will move your power draw from the offboard power supply automatically and almost instantly if the offboard power supply is cut off.

All boats operating in US waters with permanently installed toilets are required by federal law to have a Marine Sanitation Device on board that either stores human waste or reduces the coliform count to such low levels that the sewage poses no public hazard. QUALITY COUNTS

There are many cheap oils available in stores that claim to be suitable for marine use. Many of these are just repackaged general-purpose oils. An outboard motor is a significant investment and the quality of the lubricants you put in it has a real effect on the engine’s lifespan. Inferior oil may be a few dollars cheaper, but if it leads to early repair or replacement of an expensive outboard, the savings really aren’t worth it. This is one case where quality really does matter.

 

KNOW YOUR OUTBOARD

In 1998 the EPA mandated that between 1999 and 2006 a new set of emissions requirements would be imposed on marine outboards. Prior to 1999, almost all 2-stroke outboards on the market were carbureted models that left significant amounts of fuel unburned. 

Carbureted engines required mixing oil with the fuel before use. As the new regulations were implemented, manufacturers moved to Electronic Fuel Injection and later to Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) systems. Almost all modern outboards are DFI, but many older outboards are in circulation. 

Some outboard motor lubricants are specific to one type of engine, others can be used with more than one type. You should know what type of engine you have and choose an oil that’s appropriate for that type.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

 

BASE TYPE

The base type refers to the oil compound before blending with additives. Oil bases are either conventional or synthetic. Conventional-base oils are markedly cheaper and high-quality conventional-base oil is adequate for most purposes. Synthetic-base oils typically have fewer impurities and thus leave fewer deposits behind in your engine. Synthetics also flow more smoothly on cold engine starts. Most outboards can use either conventional or synthetic-base oils, but check your manufacturer’s recommendations for guidance on the specific requirements of your motor.

 

RATING

The TC-W3 rating is issued by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. To earn the rating oils must pass a variety of tests for piston deposits, piston ring stickage, and lubricity. Any oil used in an outboard motor should carry a TC-W3 rating.

 

MANUFACTURER’S SPECIFICATIONS

Each manufacturer has lubricant specifications and using oil that fails to meet those specifications may void your engine warranty. Most high-quality oils are formulated to meet all major-manufacturer warranty standards, but it can’t hurt to check your manufacturer’s standard and be sure to use oil that meets it, especially if your outboard is still under warranty.

 

PERSONAL WATERCRAFT

Personal Watercraft are small jet-powered boats that you sit or stand on, rather than sit in. Many people call them jet skis.
