BEST PREMIUM-QUALITY SNOWBOARDING ACTION CAMERA

If you’re looking for a camera that excels at taking both photos and videos all while being packed into a compact, rugged, take-me-anywhere-and-everywhere design, then GoPro’s latest offering will be your godsend: the Hero8 Black.

Able to shoot stunning Ultra High Definition video (4K at 60 frames per second), you’ll be able to capture ultra high-resolution video and smooth, buttery action footage without having to worry about the details. You’ll also be able to seamlessly switch between 4 “digital lenses”, giving you the freedom to capture both “normal” looking video (without the warp-y, fisheye look) as well as super wide angle (270° degree field of view) shots from the top of the mountain that’s like taking a really cool panorama on your smartphone, only better!

Also packed into this little beast is an intuitive 2” touch-screen that you can playback footage on, a removable battery that can be replaced with a backup to keep you on the mountain longer, and voice controlled camera activation for hands free simplicity. But perhaps coolest of all is the new HyperSmooth 2.0, which reduces shakiness and nauseating video from intense action footage.

Downsides? None. We’re still scratching our heads as to how GoPro is going to top this one in the future.

GoPro MAX

Specs
  • Type: Action Cam
  • Best For: Video
  • Weight: 5.75 oz.

  • Photo: 5.5 Megapixels (up to 16.6 Megapixels)
  • Video: Ultra High Definition (5.6K at 30 frames per second) / Quad High Definition (1440p at 60 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: 2x
  • Raw Photo Capture: No
Features
  • Live Stream Footage To Social Media In Full HD (1080p)
  • 4 Digital Lenses Seamlessly Change Field Of View To Capture The Best Shots
  • 6 Mics With Wind-Noise Reduction Capture Crisp Audio Regardless Of Direction
GoPro MAX

BEST VLOGGING SNOWBOARDING ACTION CAMERA

If you like to vlog your snowboarding adventures in order to capture both yourself and what you’re experiencing, then the GoPro MAX will make your life much, much easier.

Sporting not just 1, but 2 cameras, the MAX is able to capture both front and rear facing video footage simultaneously. We know: mind = blown. Not only that, the footage you capture isn’t just two seperate feeds, but rather is stitched together in real-time to create a 360° field of view that includes both camera feeds in a single frame. I swear it’s magic.

This takes personal (and professional) vlogging to a whole new level. The immersive 360° video is also perfect when hitting the terrain park, letting viewers see both the obstacle to be shredded and yourself as you nail the stunt.

Of course, you can also switch back to “Hero” mode and record normally (i.e. not in 360° mode – this can be with either front or rear facing camera) if you are so inclined and have a specific vision for a shot.

Perhaps where this camera gets a little tricky is in the photo department. If you want to take “Hero” style (i.e. normal – not 360° spherical looking shots) photos, you’ll be relying on 1 of the 2 cameras and will have only a 5.5 megapixel capability which is underwhelming, to say the least.

However, if you double up the cameras and capture an “immersive 360° photo” (think phone camera panorama to the max), you’ll have a whopping 16.6 megapixels at your disposal. While that is indeed impressive, not everyone wants or needs 360° photos, making this a less than ideal “photo” camera.

In sum: The MAX has revolutionary video capabilities for action sports like snowboarding and will take “pretty good” normal photos.

Olympus TG-6 Waterproof

Specs
  • Type: Point-and-Shoot
  • Best For: Photo
  • Weight: 2.12 oz.
  • Waterproof?: Yes (up to 50 ft./15 m.)
  • Photo: 12 Megapixels
  • Video: Ultra High Definition (4K at 30 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: No
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • Dual-Pane, Sealed Lens Is Fog-Proof And Prevents Condensation
  • Countless Accessories Allow You To Expand What This Camera Is Capable Of
  • Complete Weatherproof Construction Guards Against Water, Snow, Dust, & Impacts

BEST RUGGED POINT-AND-SHOOT

If you’re looking for a more traditional style camera that has most of the capabilities of a GoPro, then the TG-6 Waterproof by Olympus should be on your list of options.

When it comes to rugged adventures, the TG-6 stacks up well. It’s actually more waterproof than a GoPro, able to be submerged almost 20 feet deeper than the Hero8 Black. It’s also dustproof, freezeproof, shockproof, crushproof, snowproof, and has a 3” rear display (1” larger than a GoPro display).

It has a 12 megapixel camera that matches the Hero8 Black, but will ultimately capture better photos thanks to a high-speed sensor absent from GoPros. Pair that with the ability to manipulate settings and amateur photographers will be able to create stunning visuals from the top of the mountain.

Overall, the TG-6 will beat out a GoPro in the photography department in the hands of someone with a little photo know-how. Its video capabilities are just dandy, but could be better.

Note: This is the only camera listed here that does not include BlueTooth capabilities.

GoPro HERO7 Black

Specs
  • Type: Action Cam
  • Best For: Photo & Video
  • Weight: 4.1 oz.
  • Waterproof?: Yes (up to 33 ft./10 m.)
  • Photo: 12 Megapixels
  • Video: Ultra High Definition (4K at 60 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: 8x
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • 3 Digital Lens Can Capture A Variety of Photos And Videos
  • Hands-Free Voice Activation Makes Using The Camera A Breeze
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) Technology Intelligently Improves Photos In Real-Time

BEST BUDGET PICK

If you’re wanting a top-notch GoPro without paying top-dollar money, you can save some coin by grabbing the previous iteration: the GoPro Hero7 Black.

The Hero7 Black has many of the same features as the newest GoPro model (the Hero8 Black), offering 12 megapixel photos, 4K video capture at 60 frames per second (fps), a 2” touchscreen for playing back footage, slow motion up to 8x, and HyperSmooth video stabilization that will make your snowboarding footage buttery smooth.

The Hero7 Black also has 3 digital lenses (doesn’t include the narrow lens on the Hero8 Black), captures RAW photos that can be edited using post-production editing software, and includes voice-activated features for hands free capabilities.

However, the live streaming option is only available in 720p (p refers to pixel count), which although is technically HD, it is noticeably low-quality compared to a stunning 1080p video (which has 50% more pixels, meaning a sharper image!). Also absent is the Night Lapse shooting option (available on Hero8 Black) which allows you to take time-lapse photos and videos in low light (i.e. night time).

At the end of the day, the Hero7 Black is nearly identical to the Hero8 Black and if the aforementioned differences don’t bother you, then the Hero7 Black will actually be a better investment for you since it comes at a lower price point.

Canon PowerShot G9X Mark II

Specs
  • Type: Point-and-Shoot
  • Best For: Photo
  • Weight: 7.2 oz.
  • Waterproof?: No
  • Photo: 20.1 Megapixels
  • Video: Full High Definition (1080p at 60 frames per second)
  • Slo-mo: No
  • Raw Photo Capture: Yes
Features
  • Available In 2 Colors
  • Has Bluetooth For Easy Photo Sharing With Friends And Family
  • Takes Amazing Photos In Low-Light And Motion Heavy Scenarios

BEST PREMIUM QUALITY POINT-AND-SHOOT

If you have a little bit of camera know-how and want to take the highest quality photos to document your snowboarding vacation, then the PowerShot G9X Mark II from Canon will be your best bet.

Sporting the best photo resolution in this list, the PowerShot boasts a whopping 20.1 megapixel camera and has a high-speed sensor that intelligently manipulates the elements to produce the highest quality photos. In order to make the most of these features, you’ll need a little knowledge when it comes to adjusting ISO, aperture, and shutter speed (see Things to Consider section below for more info about these terms).

Speaking of ISO, this camera has the broadest range of all the cameras listed here, going as low as 125 and as high as 12,800. ISO determines how much light a camera’s sensor is receiving – the lower the lightsource, the higher the ISO needs to be. This translates into a greater ability to capture low-light images such as family photos on the mountain during sunset.

The PowerShot also features an image processor that makes action shots crisper and cleaner, reducing the chance for blurry photos. And it has a 3” inch touchscreen that can be used to review photos after they’re taken.

To conclude, the PowerShot will take the best photos hands down but is certainly the most vulnerable camera when snowboarding. Even tucked away in a backpack, it risks damage in the event of a fall. If you want to take videos or you need a rugged camera that will stand up to drops and falls, look elsewhere.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CAMERA FOR SNOWBOARDING

PHOTO & VIDEO RESOLUTION

When buying a camera, differences that can be deal breakers and decision makers rest on what you will primarily be using the camera for: photo or video? While many cameras are able to do both really well, most cameras lean one way or another. The resolution of the photos and videos being captured is extremely important to understand.

Photo

While there are plenty of “in-camera” technical aspects that can be manipulated by a photographer to take a great photo, there is one fundamental metric that helps us compare between two cameras: megapixels (MP).

Simply put, the more megapixels a camera has, the better quality the photos will be.

Video

Video is a little more nuanced but we’ll keep it brief and simple. There are two things to keep an eye on when looking at video specs: resolution and frame rate.

  • Resolution

Terms such as “1080p” and “4K” are very common when shooting video. What these numbers refer to are the number of pixels being captured in a given space (similar to megapixels for photos). 1080p means that there are more than 1,000 pixels in a single horizontal row whereas 4K has almost 4,000, making it 4 times better than the 1080p option. 1440p is another resolution that is a small step up from 1080p, but not nearly as high-quality as 4K.

Put simply, the higher the number, the better the video quality!

video resolution

  • Frame Rate

Frame rate refers to frames per second (fps), or the number of pictures taken in a single second. The two most common frame rates are 60fps and 30fps. The more frames you can pack into a single second of video, the smoother the video will appear. Therefore, 60fps is preferred for action shots or any video with a lot of motion being captured.

  • Putting It Together

So, what’s better? Video shot in 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60 fps?

It depends on what you’re capturing! If you’re panning slowly across mountain top vista and want to display the beauty of the environment, then you’ll want to focus on that 4K resolution. However, if you’re snagging action footage of your friend snowboarding, you’ll want to focus on the higher frame rate.

4K 30fps = Higher resolution

1080p 60fps = Smoother video

This is a pretty typical option you’ll be faced with if the camera you choose has a maximum of 4K at 30fps as you can typically bump the resolution down while increasing the frame rate.

However, if you’d rather avoid this decision and want the highest quality everything, then make sure the camera you buy can shoot 4K at 60fps. Keep in mind that this also comes with an increase in price.

RAW PHOTOS

This applies if you plan to edit your photos in Adobe Lightroom or Aperture (by Apple). RAW is a file format that holds a lot more information than a standard JPEG image format and can be manipulated much easier. However, once you are done editing, your photos will need to be exported back into a JPEG format.

If you prefer a simpler approach and won’t be editing your photos after shooting, then having a camera that shoots in RAW isn’t necessary.

WIFI & BLUETOOTH

The WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities on a camera can vary and aren’t to be treated the same. Generally speaking, WiFi is the stronger and more useful option over BlueTooth, as it can be used to livestream, transfer data, playback video, and control the camera remotely.

Bluetooth is a lower power consumption option with limited capabilities. In the instance of a GoPro, the Bluetooth is used to “wake up” a camera from sleep mode.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

Aperture

Aperture measures the depth of field in a photo being taken. It also allows more light to be let into the camera (similar to the way your pupil works).

Shutter Speed

This is a measure of how quickly a photo is taken in seconds. The faster the shutter speed (1/1,000th of a second), the less opportunity for blur to distort the photo. The longer/slower the shutter speed (5 seconds, 30 seconds, etc.), the more light can be let in which is used in taking long-exposures of the night sky.

ISO

ISO is the last measure that can be manipulated when taking a photo. It influences how sensitive the camera’s sensor is to the available light. On a bright sunny day, the camera needs to be “less sensitive” and have a low ISO (i.e. 125) so your pictures don’t appear “blown out” or too bright. When it’s dusk and there’s much less light, the camera’s sensor needs to be “more sensitive” to the available light and have a higher ISO (i.e. 5000+) so that the picture doesn’t come out too dark.

HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a software technology that reads photos in real-time to improve their quality. It’s like a robot doing post-production photo editing in the blink of an eye.

Reviews - The Best Beanies for Snowboarding

Burton DND

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Thickness: Medium
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Slouchy Fit
  • Package of 3
  • 100% Fine Knit Acrylic

BEST FOR: RELAXING

With more of a relaxed, slouchy fit, Burton’s DND Beanie is the perfect hat to put you in that chilled-out mood after a good day of riding. Long and form-fitting to any head, you can roll this hat back or leave it long and droopy behind your ears for maximum warmth. Most notably, when you buy a Burton DND beanie, you receive three different hats, so you’ll have plenty of variety when the time comes to throw a hat on after riding. We highly suggest this beanie to those who know their style and want a wide color variety of it.

The North Face Osito

Specs
  • Fabric: Fleece
  • Gender: Women's
  • Thickness: Medium
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Slouchy Fit
  • Various Colors
  • Embroidered Logo On Center Front

BEST FOR: COLDER CLIMATES

Unlike most other beanies on the list, this hat is made with polyester fabric, which has a furrier texture.  It doesn’t quite have the length of other beanies, so if you’re interested in a shorter hat, this one is best for you. Made specifically for women, the North Face Osito is more form-fitting than other hats but still boasts a slouchy fit for ultimate style points.

Just check out some of the reviews online; very few reviewers have anything bad to say about this comfy and cute hat. We recommend it to North Face lovers seeking a bit more style in their hat than the average beanie wearer.

Smartwool Merino 250

Specs
  • Fabric: Merino Wool
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Thickness: Thin
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Merino Wool Wicks Moisture And Breathes Better
  • Itch-Free Comfort
  • Roll Cuff Ear Band For Customizable Fit

BEST FOR: MUlTI-SPORT ATHLETES

Thinner than most other hats, the Smartwool Merino 250 Beanie is especially made for warmer temperatures and multi-sport use. The Merino Wool material wicks away moisture better than other fabrics and breathes to regulate temperatures while the double layer knit construction is finished seamlessly for a tight, compact fit around your head.

The design uniquely provides warmth while controlling odor and removing that uncomfortable hat head itchiness. All-in-all, with such a compact and thin design, this is a great multi-sport hat that can easily fit underneath a helmet.

Mydeal Winter Bluetooth

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Thickness: Medium
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Bluetooth Compatible Technology For Listening To Music While Wearing It
  • Built-in Rechargeable Battery
  • Double Knitted For Warmth

BEST FOR: MUSIC LOVERS

The engineers over at Mydeal offer one of the coolest beanies on the market — a Bluetooth compatible beanie. Outfitted with the latest Bluetooth technology and a rechargeable speaker, you can listen to music all day long while wearing this casual, droopy beanie around town. Pull it down over your head or wear it loose on the back – you’ll look cool either way!

In any case, we recommend this hat for warm weather riders and ski-town dwellers as it isn’t quite thick enough for serious inclement weather, but it will work perfectly in milder conditions. Most importantly, the unique Bluetooth technology lands this hat on our list for all music-loving riders as there are few others like it out there.

Carhartt Acrylic Watch

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Thickness: Thick
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Various Color Options
  • Stretchable Fabric
  • Fold-Up Cuff

BEST FOR: CASUAL RIDING

Thick and well-knit, the Carhartt Acrylic Watch Beanie is a great hat for any casual rider. With its label sewn on to the front for style and a stretchable acrylic fabric, this hat will not only fit your head, but will protect you from cold, windy weather as well. In the case that you’re getting either too cold or too hot, you can also fold the hat’s cuff up or down depending on the temperature.

A classic beanie with a comfortable, tighter feel, we recommended this hat to those who prefer a warm hat in the lodge after a full day’s riding. It’s sure to keep your head warm on the mountain and around town.

Beechfield Heritage

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Women’s
  • Thickness: Thick
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Machine Washable
  • Double Layer Knitting
  • 100% Acrylic

BEST FOR: WARM WEATHER

If you’re in the market for a cheaper beanie and one that might be great for casual, warm weather events, this hat is probably best for you. More affordable than other hats on the list, it is made of a soft acrylic that fits nicely over your head while the foldable, cuffed edge provides you with that extra layer of heat around the ears.

This hat, however, may not endure the same level of weather that other hats might, so we recommend wearing it for casual purposes or warm weather snowboarding. All-in-all, it’s biggest selling point is comfort, so if that’s your preference, then definitely take a look at Beachfield’s Heritage Beanie.

Folie Co.

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Women's
  • Thickness: Medium
  • Visor: Yes
Features
  • Form-Fitting
  • Insulated Fleece Lined Interior
  • Visor For Added Protection From Cold

BEST FOR: RAINY WEATHER

Few beanies out there have visors, but the Folie Co. Warm Visor Brim Beanie comes with a 2-inch visor for added protection against cold and rain. The inside of this warm, form-fitting hat is fleece lined and because of its design, it’s easy to use this as both a nightlife hat and a snowboarding hat.

Thinner than most hats, the Folie Brim Beanie can still fit under a thin helmet, but if you want to wear it on its own, fear not because the Folie Brim Beanie is just thick enough to provide you the warmth you need around town. We recommend it to all riders seeking a brimmed-beanie.

Helly Hansen Ridgeline

Specs
  • Fabric: Acrylic
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Thickness: Thick
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Outfitted With A Pom-Pom
  • Itch-Free
  • Stretchy And Form-Fitting

BEST FOR: POM-POM LOVERS

As the only pom-pom equipped beanie on our list, the Helly Hansen Ridgeline Beanie is one of the best pom-pom models on the market. Made for long-lasting comfort, this hat is built with elastane for a stretchy, quick-recovering material that will sit on your head comfortably all day long.

You may not be able to wear this hat under a helmet due to its thickness, but if cold temperatures and high winds are annoying you then rest assured that this hat will keep your head warm and dry in even the most inclement weather.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD BEANIE

The most important things to keep in mind when buying a beanie for snowboarding are your style preferences and the weather you intend on riding in. To help you out, we’ve outlined a few of the most important characteristics to consider when buying your hat, but if you’re looking for some added information, check out Ski’s guide on How To Buy Your Snowboarding And Skiing Hat and The Clymb’s advice on Buying A Beanie as well.

DESIGN

Is the hat long or short? Does it roll over itself, or not? When buying a beanie, the first aspect to consider is whether or not the hat suits your needs; does it fit comfortably on your head, and will it fit under a helmet if you need it to?. If you want to wear your beanie under your helmet for extra warmth and safety, you’ll probably want a thinner sized beanie. If you’re just looking for a hat to wear out on the town, a thicker beanie is probably best.

FABRIC

What is the hat made out of? Though there are many different materials that hats are made of, you’ll mainly see acrylic, wool and spandex. Acrylic is a great snow-shedding material. It’s a bit more loose-fitting than the others, so it’s a great material to have for while riding. Wool, on the other hand, will soak up rain and snow a bit more than Acrylic, so it’s best worn for casual purposes when you can escape into a store if it rains. If you’re thinking about strictly using your hat for exercise then spandex is probably your best bet as these are often the thinnest and most secure hats — picture a skull-cap.

COST

Hats don’t vary much on their cost. Only a few bucks here and there. The only thing to note is that a cheaper hat is more likely to fall apart pretty quickly and probably won’t stand up to serious weather if you’re thinking about wearing it out on the slopes.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

VISOR OR BRIM

The visor or brim is a short ledge that sticks out from your beanie over your eyes to prevent snow or rain from falling in your face.

Are you ready to nail that trick you were so close to sending last season? This is the year, and a new freestyle board may be the upgrade you need. Freestyle boards are much different than all-mountain or alpine boards. The best freestyle snowboards don’t tear up the slopes, but instead, shred up the park. Rails, jumps, and boxes are where the board performs best. Freestyle snowboards are much lighter than traditional boards. You’ll be able to flick your board around easier, which is nice when doing spins in the park. Your board won’t carve as well or travel as fast as the other types of boards, but you’ll never get bored on a freestyle board.

Disclaimer: Snowboarders are known (and made fun of) for their use of slang. It may be your first time hearing boards being described with terms like flex, sidecut, and rocker. If you’re confused, I recommend checking out the Features Explain section below! This section is meant to help you choose the right snowboard for your abilities.

The second unique thing about this board construction is the use of fiberglass. Fiberglass makes the board extremely lightweight. The combination of both of these things makes the board great for freestyle snowboarders.

The core of the snowboard is also powerful, which will keep the board stable at high speeds.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FREESTYLE SNOWBOARD

Snowboards are some of the most diverse things on the slope. Every board is different and everyone has their own preferences. That being said, park riders love boards that do one thing well — pop. Weight, camber, rocker, core, and sidecut radius differentiate from board to board, and there isn’t one combination that is proven best. If you really want to know what works best for you, demo boards before you buy one. The most serious of riders need a board that lasts season after season but also fits their style best. Before you spend more than $400 on a board, try it out!

FLEX

Flex is how easily your board will bend. This directly relates to how much control you will have over your board on the ground and in the air.

SOFT: More forgiving, but requires much more strength to navigate and toss around. Better for beginners

MEDIUM: A nice middle-ground, which most freestyle riders prefer. There is a balance between forgiveness and maneuverability.

STIFF: The most difficult boards to ride. Beginners will feel out of control, but masters will love the micro-control they will have.

ROCKER / CAMBER PROFILE

In order to understand how your board’s profile will affect it’s riding ability, you need to understand what camber, rocker, and flat profiles mean. Warning, there are many different types and combinations, but the ones explained below are the most important for freestyle riding.

FLAT: Just like it sounds! There is no arc or curve in the board at all.

CAMBER: A very slight upward curve in the middle of the board with contact points near the ends of the board.

ROCKER: Camber turned upside down, the board is shaped subtly like an arc.

CAMBER/ROCKER: This is where things get a bit confusing. Boards shaped like this look like a big W. The board cambers in the middle, allowing you to pop, but rocks near the tips, allowing for more control on turns, rails, and jibs.

FLAT/ROCKER: These boards are flat in the middle, but are a rocking shape near the edges, which allows for more control.

SIDECUT RADIUS

Snowboards have a very unique shape. It may appear that the front and back edge are curved and the middle of the board is straight. However, that is not the case. If you look carefully, you’ll see that snowboards actually have more of an arch-like shape. This shape is what allows for you to turn on the snow with control. In fact, each snowboard has a completely unique cut. The measurement of this cut is called the sidecut radius. If you imagine that a circle was drawn with the same circular shape of your board, the sidecut radius is the measurement of the radius in that circle. So what does this mean for you? Well, if you want to be a freestyle snowboarder, it is recommended to stick with a sidecut between 7 to 8 meters.

A smaller sidecut radius will allow you to make much sharper turns. Snowboarders who go back and forth on the slopes quicker, in a slalom like way, tend to look for the smallest sidecut possible. A longer sidecut radius will not allow for you to turn as sharply, but will give you more stability at high speeds. If you plan to go down steeper slopes, or consider yourself an intermediate snowboarder, this may be for you. Snowboards that have a sidecut longer than 8 meters are regarded as “big mountain” because they are used by experts in extreme environments.

SHAPE

Snowboards come in 2 different shapes. The traditional shape is like a skateboard. Snowboarders refer to this as “true twin”. The other type of snowboard shape resembles more of a surfboard. This allows for a board to float more in deep snow.

Most freestyle boards are true twin shaped. Why? Well first and foremost, freestyle riders like to ride switch. “Riding switch” is when you ride in the opposite stance. So if you ride with your left foot forward, for example, riding switch would mean that your right foot would be in front. Freestyle snowboarders tend to ride switch often because they can do more tricks. Why? Well they will not have to lose speed switching back to their dominant stance after a landing. True twin shaped boards are also easier to twist. This means it will be easier to spin your board around and land 180s, 360s, and other spin tricks. Because true twin shaped boards allow you to ride switch without losing any performance. Directional boards may be better in powder or deep snow conditions, but true twin boards are preferred by freestyle snowboarders.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ABSORBENT BASE

Bases with absorbing technology will hold wax much better than those without. This means you won’t have to wax your board as often for it to perform at its best.

DIRECTIONAL-SHAPED BOARDS

Directional boards are best for beginners. Why? Beginners typically avoid learning how to ride switch until they have a season or two under their belt. So if you are just getting the hang of going down the slopes, get yourself a directional board for more control.

MOUNTAIN CORE FOR IMPROVED TORSIONAL RESPONSE

Boards that boast torsional response are for freestyle riders who love to spin. These boards respond to spin really well, making your board easier to flip around.

SQUEEZEBOX

Boards with this technology feature a unique core that gives more pop than other cores. It also tends to be a bit heavier. Snowboarders that hit large gaps should take advantage of boards with this technology.

ULTIMATE RIDE TECHNOLOGY

Burton boards boast this technology, which actually happens to be really useful. Burton overbuilds their boards and then puts them in a machine to break them in. Other boards take a few months to really break-in, but your Burton will be ready on the first day.

ULTRALIGHT CORE

Every snowboard boasts a unique core, however, there is no proven front-runner in terms of wood. Freestyle boards try and stay as light as possible, which is why the core is always boasted. Instead of focusing on the core material, compare the weights of your desired board length.

WIDE SIZE AVAILABLE

If you have really large feet (think size 12), consider buying a wide snowboard. This will prevent your heels and toes from dragging on the snow. Be careful though! Wide snowboards are also much more difficult to control.

A cold face is almost as bad as a cold butt, and a cold butt is almost as bad as cold toes. But nothing, not face, butt, or toes, is as bad as cold fingers. Most skiers and riders often get a nice pair of gloves to combat the issue, but when the temperatures really start kicking up, or rather down, they find their fingers getting cold, too cold, and with no real way to warm them apart from a small handwarmer. So the smartest of all get mittens. And not just any mittens. Real boarders invest in the best snowboard mittens money can buy that are warm and cuddly and keep their fingers together for maximum warmth.

Mittens have been around for what seems like forever, so when it comes to buying your next pair, it may seem like a daunting task considering how many options there are to choose from. Fortunately, we’ve picked out a perfect selection of mittens designed specifically for snowboarding, so you can get back on the slopes and stop worrying about frigid fingers forevermore!

Reviews - The Best Mittens for Snowboarding

DAKINE Titan

Specs

  • Palm Fabric: Synthetic
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Synthetic Insulation For Warmth
  • Washable Fleece Liner
  • Nose-Wipe Thumb Panels To Wipe Away Snow-Boogers

BEST FOR: WARM WEATHER RIDERS

The Dakine Titan Insulated Mittens are a durable, warm, grippy mitten that should be more than enough for any warm-weather boarder. The synthetic, breathable fabric prevents snow and ice from melting in your hand while the small, waterproof pockets on the back of the palm perfectly fit a hand warmer.

These gloves even come complete with a nose-wipe thumb panel, a soft, padded piece on the edge of your thumb, to wipe away those cold sniffles. All warm weather and casual riders would love these gloves.

Burton GORE-TEX

Specs
  • Gender: Women’s
  • Palm Fabric: Polyurethane
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Venting Pockets Either Store Handwarmer Or Aerate Hand
  • Liner Gloves Are Touch-Screen Compatible
  • Removable Wrist Leash

BEST FOR: CONTACT WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD

“Best for contact with the outside world” may sound like a funny “best for” title, but the Burton GORE-Tex mittens were made with just that in mind: easy, seamless contact with all things on the mountain and in your pocket. Unlike other gloves, the inner liner of these Gore-Tex mittens are not only removable but also function with a touch screen so that you can keep your hands warm and busy during lunch on the mountain.

The Gore-Tex mittens by Burton include a host of other features including a removable wrist leash so you won’t lose them on the mountain and thick insulation for superior warmth on the slopes. We recommend these to all riders that spend a good chunk of their time on their phone.

Outdoor Research Alti

Specs
  • Gender: Women’s
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Liners Have Pockets For Hand Warmers
  • Gauntlet Closure Keeps Cold And Snow Out
  • Water Resistant Material Keeps Your Hands Dry

BEST FOR: COLD WEATHER

The Outdoor Research Alti Mittens work best between -40 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit, making them a warm and reliable glove for cold environments. Their tightening gauntlet closes around the wrist to keep out cold air and snow while the inner liner, unlike the glove itself, bears a hand warmer pocket that brings the warmth of it closer to your hand.

The glove itself is precurved to the shape of your hand so mobility shouldn’t be an issue. If you do choose to take them off, the wrist cord will keep you from accidentally dropping them onto the trail below. We highly recommend these to any rider looking for a particularly warm glove.

Seirus Heat Touch Hellfire

Specs
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Heated Mitten
  • Locking Insulation Traps Heat
  • Indicator Light Displays Battery Level
Seirus Heat Touch Hellfire

BEST FOR: COLD HANDS

If cold hands, fingers, or palms are your kryptonite and you’d do anything for a hot hand, then look no further because the Seirus Hellfire Mittens are built especially for you. These mittens are only one of a few pairs on the market that come complete with a self-heating system. The New 3000 Ultra Battery uses the simple touch of a button to heat your hand and its energy is always displayed by a changing light color that’s easy to recognize. Pitfalls of a heated mitten like this include the charging of its battery and the extra weight and girthiness, but if you can get past that, then this may be the perfect mitten for you.

REI Co-op Minimalist GTX

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Polyester
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Elastic Cuff For Easy On And Off
  • Adjustable Fit
  • Inner Liner Sold Separately

BEST FOR: HOT WEATHER

Whether you’d like to customize your mitten’s individual parts or wear just the shell of a mitten for shoveling or casual snowboarding in warm weather, the REI Co-op Minimalist GTX Mittens will satisfy all your needs. This shell of a mitten can be paired off with the Polartec gloves, a liner sold separately, or worn alone for light, minimal protection from the elements. Other features include an angled hook-and-loop structure that adjusts the mitten tightly to your hand and an elastic cuff for easier wear. Overall, we recommend these to those seeking a shell for their hands to wear on warmer days.

Arc’teryx Fission SV

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Goat Leather
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Thick Insulation On Back Of Hand For Added Protection
  • Extended Gauntlet Covers More Of Wrists
  • Reinforced Leather Palms And Fingers For Grip

BEST FOR: SEVERE WEATHER

Just as the name says, “SV” stands for severe weather and these mittens are well up to the challenge. With extra insulation doubled onto the back of your hand and added insulation placed strategically around the fingers and palm, your hand should stay warm and well-ventilated even in the thickest of snow storms. The outer shell also stretches out if needed so that you don’t need to take off your gloves when grabbing a snack or lacing up your boots.

There are, of course, more protective gloves out there, but for its price point, the Arc’teryx Fission gloves will keep your hands and wrists protected in any conditions you encounter.

Dakine Team Fillmore Trigger

Specs
  • Gender: Men's
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Durable Water Repellent Palm Keeps Your Hands Warm And Dry All Day Long
  • Duraflex Material Maintains Flexibility In All Temperatures
  • Removable Wrist Leash Prevents You From Dropping And Losing These Mittens

BEST FOR: MOBILITY

For what their worth, the Dakine Trigger Mittens are not only one of the most affordable mittens out there but the most flexible as well. Unlike other two-part mittens, these mittens have three distinct slots for your hands: one slot for your thumb, one for your pointer finger, and a large slot for the rest of your hand.  So if you’re particularly looking for a greater degree of mobility, this is your mitten.

A thick fleece, a removable wrist leash, and a durable water repellent leather palm check all the boxes of a good pair of mittens, and yet these only cost a quarter of the price. We highly recommend these Burton Gore-Tex Mittens to warm weather boarders and occasional riders as these mittens won’t last as long as a more expensive pair of mittens.

DAKINE Leather Camino

Specs
  • Gender: Women’s
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Nose Wipe Thumb Panels
  • Two-Year Limited Warranty
  • Internal Heat Pack Pockets For Hand Warmers

BEST FOR: WET WEATHER

The Dakine Camino Mittens are built to repel cold, wet weather anywhere. Heavily coated with a durable water repellent treatment, these mittens also feature waterproof liners to protect your hands from rain and snow. If you do choose to take off your mittens, these liners are touch-screen compatible, so you can keep your hands warm even as you surf the web.

With a cinch-closed gauntlet and nose wipe thumb panels to wipe away any snow-boogers that form, these gloves are soft, warm and well protected from the elements. We highly recommend them for wet weather environments.

KINCO 901T-M

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Pigskin
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Pigskin Patch On Palms And Fingertips Withstand Heavy Impact
  • Cuff Can Be Worn Both Outside And Inside The Cuff
  • Angled Thumbs For More Flexibility

BEST FOR: MINIMALIST RIDERS

Stylish, grippy, and lightweight, these Kinco Pigskin Mittens will offer you more than enough flexibility for any maneuver. Worn often by park riders and other minimalists, these mittens come with suede pigskin patches on their palms and fingertips for added grip and protection when grabbing your board or skis. Furthermore, the thermal insulation within and laminated liner retains heat and expels the cold all while maintaining that breathable, lightweight feel.

Overall, we recommend these to stylish, minimalist riders looking for a warm, durable glove that will withstand adventures through the park.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SNOWBOARD MITTENS

The most useful of all your snowboard gear is your mittens. Unlike your snowboard, you’ll find yourself wearing them around town or when shoveling out the driveway as well as on the slopes. So, when buying yours, research some specifics on how to choose the best mittens and how to buy the right ones for you. Below, we’ve listed out a few of the main considerations.

GLOVES OR MITTENS

Do you want mittens or gloves? Hopefully you’ve already determined which is best for you, but if you haven’t yet, make sure you check out how both feel on your hands. Gloves offer riders a better grip on their surroundings and mittens offer more warmth.

STYLE

Most mittens come with two distinct areas, one for your thumb and the other for your four fingers, but others utilize a “trigger” style. This style comes with three sections adding in one slot for your pointer finger. This design gives riders more mobility but cuts down a bit on warmth. If you anticipate using your hands a lot or you need to interact with clients, you’ll probably want a “trigger” style mitten for that added mobility.

WARMTH

Some mittens are just shells, others just liners, and a few even heat themselves. Whatever the case, decide how warm of a mitten you want and buy one that fits your preference. A thick liner and added protection usually means a warmer glove. Often, price correlates to warmth as well.

GRIP

Pigskin, leather, polyester: different mittens use different fabric for their design. Polyester is often the cheapest and tends to be quite slippery so you might be prone to dropping things with polyester mittens. Pigskin is rather cheap as well, but offers more grip; though it is susceptible to weather. Leather is the most grippy surface and often comes with a water repellent coating as well, making it a rather expensive option.

PRICE

Mittens will vary dramatically in price, and often, that’s for good reason. The more expensive the mitten, often the better it keeps your hand warm. Sometimes, you’ll see self-heating mittens which will cost the most because of the technology, but we only recommend these to casual riders as a self-heating mitten may not be able to withstand more severe terrain and weather.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

TRIGGER STYLE MITTEN

A mitten designed with three parts: one for the thumb, one for the pointer finger, and one section for the remaining three fingers.

GAUNTLET

The part of the mitten that extends back up the wrist for warmth and protection.

WRIST STRAP

A thin strap that hangs from your mitten and wraps around your wrist so you don’t drop and lose your mittens when you take them off between rides.

THUMB PANEL

A padded area of the thumb meant to more comfortably wipe your nose.

The shell features taped seams to ensure that inclement weather doesn’t get in, and the liner jacket has full synthetic insulation to keep you warm on the slopes and while walking around town after snowboarding. The shell of the jacket also has a hood that can be worn over a helmet on those particularly cold or snowy days. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD JACKETS

COST

As with all outdoor gear, you have to find the best balance for you between performance and economy. It is important, however, to think of a snowboard jacket as an investment in your winter season. A jacket that will keep you warm all day, that will prevent you from getting soaked, that will breathe on those warm and sunny spring days, and that will make you feel good and stylish out on the hill can make the difference between an awesome day and a passable or miserable day. If you love snowboarding and are eager to continue to ride season after season, then a quality women’s snowboard jacket will allow you to enjoy the slopes winter after winter.

TYPE OF SNOWBOARDING & SNOWBOARD GEOGRAPHY

The type of snowboarding that you do and the geography in which you typically snowboard may have an impact on your choice of snowboard jacket. For example, if you typically snowboard at Northeast ski resorts (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), you’re going to want an insulated jacket that’ll keep you warm all day.

If you spend most of your time at Colorado or Utah Rocky Mountain resorts, you may opt for a shell rather than a fully insulated jacket because temperatures out west are typically more mild with more sunshine. If you’re into riding the terrain park, jacket styles tend to lean toward baggier or more roomy, whereas if you’re looking to head into the backcountry, you may want to invest in a more technical shell. Check out Evo’s informative article for information about how to choose your snowboard jacket based on region of the United States.

FIT

There are three main types of fit in women’s snowboard jackets: slim, regular, and loose fitting. With a slim fit (sometimes known as “alpinist”), your jacket will fit much closer to your body with less room for under layers. A regular fit is that happy medium between slim and loose. There’s plenty of room to fit more layers underneath without feeling like you’re swimming in your jacket. A looser jacket has traditionally been preferred among snowboarders as a style statement and is worn today by riders that prefer more coverage overall and more room for mid- and under layers. Fit is a matter of preference for each individual snowboarder.

TYPE OF WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD JACKETS

There are five main types of women’s snowboard jackets: shells, insulated jacket, technical shells, soft shells, and 3-in-1 jackets. When choosing a jacket type, it’s important to consider your comfort, the places that you like to snowboard, and the type of snowboarding that you’ll be doing most often. If you run colder or typically snowboard at resorts located in colder climates, consider an insulated jacket to give you that extra warmth. 3-in-1 jackets can be economical as well as practical. For more information, check out REI’s Advice Column on choosing what to wear for snowboarding.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

SHELL

A shell is a non-insulated snowboard jacket under which warm layers can be worn. Shells are versatile in all weather because more layers can be added underneath for colder temperatures while venting and less insulation provides comfort in warmer, spring temperatures.

INSULATED JACKET

Insulated jackets have a layer of synthetic or down insulation that keep you warmer than just a shell alone. These jackets are most popular in colder climes like Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine and for those that tend to run colder.

TECHNICAL SHELLS

These jackets are preferred by boarders who spend time in the backcountry. They are made to breathe while providing best-in-class waterproofing. They feature high-end fabrics and technical bells and whistles.

SOFTSHELLS

Softshell jackets are made of soft, stretchy fabrics that move with you. They tend to be water resistant, rather than waterproof and aren’t as warm as insulated jackets. These are great for spring snowboarding days.

3-IN-1 JACKETS

These jackets feature an outer shell with a fleece or mid-layer jacket that zips into and out of the lining. Those who know that they’ll be riding in a variety of conditions in all sorts of climates might opt for this type of jacket as a practical, economical option.

POWDER SKIRT

Powder skirts are a stretchy, waterproof piece of the jacket that can often snap or zip onto snow pants as well as cinch around the waist. The goal of this piece of waterproof fabric is to keep snow out of your snowboard pants and off of your back.

INSULATION TYPE

Snowboard jackets tend to use synthetic or down insulation for added warmth. Synthetic insulation is often less bulky and has quick-drying and anti-bacterial characteristics. Down is very lightweight and very warm.

WATERPROOFING

Technology that keeps the water out of the inside of the jacket with the goal of keeping you warm and dry all day on the slopes. Jackets range from entirely waterproof to water resistant.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SNOWBOARD BACKPACK

Buying a backpack may seem relatively straight forward, but to make sure you’re buying the best one for you, we recommend reading through a few of these key points to consider. If you’re hungry for some more information as well, read through this article about how to choose a backpack by Evo.

GENDER

First and foremost, make sure you’re buying the right gender bag. Nowadays bags are specified for both women and men, so before choosing yours, make sure it fits your gender.

CAPACITY

After gender, capacity is the most important feature to consider. Here, you need to gauge exactly what you’re looking for. If it’s a day pack, stick to the 12L and 16L sizes. If it’s a backcountry day pack, bump up to the 20L and 32L sizes. And if it’s overnighter, anything over 40L should be a good fit.

CARRYING STYLE

If you read through the bag descriptions carefully, you’ll notice they note how your skis or snowboard will attach. Not all bags attach boards and skis in the same way. Some sport a vertical carry, which means your bag will stand up and down as you hike, whereas others are horizontal. Whatever the carry may be, ask around to make sure it suits your style and environment. For example, you may want a vertical carry bag for hiking on narrow trails.

COST

A good bag will cost you a pretty penny, but most riders can make do with any bag. However, if you’re looking to attempt some seriously difficult or avalanche-prone terrain, please, spend the extra money. When your life is on the line, you don’t want to be worrying about a flimsy bag as well.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DIAGONAL CARRY

This carrying style is typically designed for carrying skis as they will attach to your bag in a diagonal or A-frame style carry, which is more ergonomic and comfortable.

AVY COMPATIBLE

Straps on the inside or outside of your bag will really lock your board or boards into place. If not secured, boardsIf you ever see the word Avy, the company is referring to avalanche equipment. Not all bags come equipped with avalanche compatible equipment, whether that is space for a beacon and probe, or an airbag. If you’re planning on spending any time boarding in the backcountry, make sure to look for a bag that is compatible with avalanche equipment.

FRAME

If you ever see the term “frame” while comparing different bags, it refers to the structure of the backpack. Some bags have frameless structures, others are built with an internal or external frame. Internal frame packs are usually the most comfortable and popular for day hikes and overnight trips. Frameless bags are lighter weight and can be useful for short day treks. External frame packs are not very common these days, but they are most appropriate for multi-day trips into the backcountry.

Hestra Heli

TOP OVERALL SNOWBOARD GLOVE

When you need a quality pair of performance gloves that will keep your hands warm in the coldest of conditions, look to the Helis.

Hestra designed the Helis to be a wider fitting style of snowboard glove with a removable Bemberg fleece liner that feels comfortable against your skin. The Triton fabric is windproof, waterproof, and extremely durable. The synthetic insulation integrated into the glove provides for reliable warmth — even when things get wet. Multiple adjustment points allow you to dial in the perfect fit.

What I like most about the Hestra Helis is how dexterous they are.

Burton Gore-Tex

Specs
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Palm Fabric: Polyurethane
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Synthetic Insulation For Warmth
  • Zippered Pockets On Backs Of Hands For Storing Valuables
  • Removable Fleece Liner In Case Temps Heat Up
Burton Gore-Tex

BEST FOR: BEGINNERS

Best for beginner riders in milder climates, the Burton Gore-Tex gloves are a standard option for anyone just starting out with boarding. Built with a polyurethane, water wicking fabric for its palm and a synthetic, removable liner, your hands will stay warm and dry all day long. A nice addition to these gloves are the zippered pockets on each glove that provides a nice space for a hand warmer or storing small valuables like a car key or ID.

These gloves are much cheaper than other gloves on the market and will work relatively well in most weather. Keep in mind that the synthetic material won’t stand up to the elements quite as well as other gloves, so seek out another option if you’re anticipating colder temps and higher winds.

Black Diamond Mercury Mitts

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Goat leather
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Soft, recycled fleece linings
  • 4-way stretch fabric shells
  • EMPEL™ water- and PFC-free durable water repellent finish
  • Fully waterproof BD.dry™ inserts
Black Diamond Mercury Mitts

BEST SNOWBOARD MITTENS

When the warmest pair of gloves just aren’t enough to keep your fingers toasty, a pair of mitts is the only way to go.

Black Diamond’s Mercury mitts include a removable insulated liner filled with Primaloft Gold Cross Core which dries when wet — perfect for riding in cold, wet conditions. The Mercury is relatively water resistant and built to be pretty much bombproof, thanks to the impressive BD.dry waterproof breathable insert. Long gauntlet style cuffs round out this complete cold-weather-ready package.

What I like most about the Mercury mittens is the revolutionary water repellent finish.

Black Diamond Solano

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Goat leather

Features
  • Waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex insert keeps hands dry
  • Battery-powered heater keeps hands toasty all day
  • LED button controls let you dial in the right amount of warmth
  • Fixed fleece lining and PrimaLoft insulation
Black Diamond Solano

BEST HEATED OPTION

When you’re out adventuring in the coldest of conditions, a battery powered heater often makes what could otherwise be a miserable day out on the slopes downright comfy and enjoyable.
These gloves feature an effective GORE-TEX waterproof breathable insert to keep the warmth in and the moisture out. This is complimented by a fixed fleece lining, PrimaLoft insulation, and a battery-powered heater that’s completely rechargeable.  The Solano includes its own carrying case and charger with adapters.

What I like most about these gloves is how easy the heater is to operate, thanks to the LED button controls that let you adjust the heat as needed.

Showa Best 282 Atlas

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Polyurethane
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • TEMRES Technology for 100% waterproof and breathable hand protection
  • Breathability reduces perspiration and increases comfort
  • Rough textured, oil resistant coating provides excellent wet or dry grip
  • Yellow acrylic insulation provides excellent warmth

BEST FOR: THE BACKCOUNTRY

Backcountry performance demands more performance than in-resort riding — so don’t let the affordable price tag on these fool you. The Showa Best are up to any challenge you could throw at them.

The 282 Atlas gloves feature a polyurethane waterproof breathable shell an an insulating acrylic liner. The shell is moderately textured, providing for a decent grip. The seamless knit liner is touted to serve two purposes — insulate the hand and buffer it from moisture build-up on the inside.

What I like most about the Atlas gloves is how durable they are for such an inexpensive product.

Black Diamond Guide

Specs
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Removable Liner Gloves In Case Temperatures Heat Up
  • Wool Liners Keep Your Hands Super Warm Even When Wet
  • Long Cuffs Prevent Snow From Entering Your Gloves

BEST FOR: TREES AND GLADES

These long cuffed gloves are built for thick powder, harsh weather, and gnarly environments. The removable wool liners will keep your hands insulated and warm in the most extreme weather and the molded padding on the knuckles will protect your hands if you’re bashing through the trees. A nice little touch are the soft fabric thumbs, which give you a great place to wipe your nose if you ever get those cold riding boogies that we all know all too well. Overall, this is a great glove for an aggressive rider looking to tackle the trees in thick powder.

The North Face Apex+ Etip

Specs
  • Gender: Women’s
  • Palm Fabric: Softshell
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Women-Specific Design
  • Silicone Grip For Added Traction
  • Pull Tab For Easy On And Off

BEST FOR: WARM WEATHER SPORTS

The North Face Apex Etip Glove uses a silicone palm to give riders more grip than other gloves. With a 100% windproof material and a soft shell on the back of your hands, this glove is especially built to block sharp wind out on the slope. At the same time, the inner insulation and unique articulated mould keeps your hand in a natural position.

If comfort and protection from the wind are your priorities, then we suggest buying yourself a pair of these gloves. They may not be best for more severe weather, but in mild, windy climates, they’ll hold up just fine.

DAKINE Titan

Specs
  • Gender: Men’s
  • Palm Fabric: Synthetic Material
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Synthetic Insulation For Extra Warmth
  • Removable Fleece Liner In Case Temps Warm Up
  • Pockets On Backs Of Hands For Storing Hand Warmers Or Small Valuables

BEST FOR: INTERMEDIATE RIDERS

Dakine’s Titan Leather Gloves are a popular option for most riders. The waterproof zip stash pockets on the back are a great place for hand warmers and the durable shells should stand up against all wind and weather. Much like most other gloves, the Titan’s inner liner is removable. However, unlike other options, the liner is made out of Tricot, a fine-knitted fabric, to give riders even more comfort. These gloves will stand up to any weather conditions, but note that they may not last as long as other, more durable gloves.

Outdoor Research Stormtracker

Specs
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Palm Fabric: Leather
  • Removable Liner: No
Features
  • Self-Heated So Your Hands Stay Toasty All Day Long
  • Tough, Protective Shells For Harsh Weather Like Rain And Hail
  • Quick Dry Insulation

BEST FOR: LUXURY RIDERS

If your worst fear on Earth is cold hands and you’ll do anything in your power to prevent it, you may want to look into Outdoor Research’s Stormtracker Heated Sensor Gloves. They might have a mouthful for a name, but these self-heating gloves will ensure your hands stay plenty warm in even the most brutal of conditions. Using a rechargeable lithium ion battery and durable, moisture wicking material, these gloves will generate their own heat while retaining your body’s heat as well.

With gloves like these, you might want to consider their weight and clunkiness. If heat is your priority, go for ‘em, but if functionality and comfort are, you may want a different option.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SNOWBOARD GLOVES

Choosing ski gloves can be a difficult task. Below, we’ve listed out the main concerns you should have when buying the best snowboard gloves out there to help make your choice a little easier.

GLOVES OR MITTENS

We’ve provided you with the top ten gloves, but before you choose a glove from the list above, you might want to consider whether or not a mitten is better suited for your needs. Mittens give riders more warmth and a better feel for their hands, whereas gloves often make interaction with your environment a lot easier because you can use your fingers.

MATERIAL

Leather or synthetic? It may take a few pairs of gloves to figure out which glove suits your preferences, but determining whether or not you want leather or not is a principal concern. Leather will give you better grip, but may feel a bit more clunkier on the hand. Synthetic fabrics on the hand will feel more comfortable but may not hold up as well in extreme weather.

DURATION

The stronger the material, the longer the glove will last. You may have to spend more money for a long-lasting glove, but in the end, we think it’s worth it.

GENDER

Double check the gender before you buy gloves. You definitely don’t want to buy the wrong pair for you.

COST

Some gloves are wildly expensive, and not necessarily because of their supreme design. Often they offer one very unique feature that others don’t and if that’s for you, then by all means, buy that glove! But if not, then we recommend seeking out a more durable glove. And don’t buy the cheapest one! The last thing you want on the slope is cold fingers.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

GORE-TEX

An industry standard water resistant material.

WRIST STRAP

A thin strap that wraps around your wrist to keep your gloves attached to your body while you take them off.

CUFF

The part of the glove that extends back from your wrist and over your forearm. This is what cinches closed to keep out snow and water.

RUBBERTEC SYNTHETIC

A highly waterproof and abrasion resistant material.

Though goggles might just seem like fancy sunglasses, they may in fact be one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you take with you to the resort. Wrapping all the way from one temple to the other, goggles protect your eyes and half of your face from cold, wind, and snow. They also allow you to check out the best trails, the most amazing views, and generally enjoy your time on the ski mountain with your snowboard buddies.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD GOGGLES

COST

As with all outdoor gear, you have to find the best balance for you between performance and economy. Goggles are, however, one of the most important pieces of snowboard equipment because they allow you to see and enjoy the slopes in any weather condition. All goggles will offer some protection from wind and cold, but it’s important to find a pair that fits you well and that is optimized for the type of conditions that you normally enjoy.

FIT

It is really important that your goggles fit your face well. They should feel snug but not tight, and they should fit nicely between your forehead and nose such that there isn’t a gap between your helmet and goggles. Some designs are made specifically for small or large faces, so you should be aware of these differences as you’re deciding. For more information about fit, check out REI’s Expert Advice column on choosing the best snowboard goggles for you.

HELMET COMPATIBILITY

Almost all goggles are compatible with helmets these days; after all, most snowboarders are wearing helmets for safety and warmth. Some companies make both helmets and goggles and design them as a system so that they fit flush against one another across your forehead. If you’re trying on goggles in a store, you should definitely try them on with a helmet to make sure that they fit comfortably on your face when paired with a snowboard helmet. The straps around the goggles can be adjusted for different circumferences so if you find yourself on the hill without a helmet on a particularly leisurely, warm spring day, then you can reduce the size of the goggles to fit your head.

LENSES

Goggle lenses come in all colors of the rainbow. Some are mirrored, some are polarized, some even have digital displays that pair with GPS or Bluetooth technology. The most important thing is to wear the right lenses for the right conditions. If it’s snowy, then you’ll want to choose a lighter lens (higher visual light transmission), and if it’s bright and sunny outside, a darker lens will help you see better (lower visual light transmission). There are lenses that fall in the middle of the spectrum that can be used in all weather conditions, but if you’re just learning to snowboard and just getting to know the slopes, it may be worth choosing snowboard goggles with multiple lenses to help you see perfectly in all conditions.

GLASSES & PRESCRIPTIONS

If you wear prescription eyewear, there are goggles that are compatible with eyeglasses. The design is typically referred to as OTG, or “over the glass” styles. They have space to accommodate your glasses while avoiding undue pressure on your temples and nose.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CYLINDRICAL LENSES

Cylindrical lenses curve from left to right across your face but remain flat vertically, between your nose and forehead. Cylindrical lenses offer good performance at a lower price point.

SPHERICAL LENSES

Spherical lenses curve both horizontally and vertically across your face, giving the goggles a “bubble-like” look. Spherical lenses reduce glare, fogging, and distortion, and also increase your field of vision.

INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES

Many goggles come with two or more lenses that can be easily swapped by the wearer depending on light conditions.

VISUAL LIGHT TRANSMISSION (VLT)

This term refers to the amount of light that reaches your eye through your goggle lens. Lighter lens tints have a higher VLT because more light is allowed to pass through, while darker tints have lower VLT because less light gets through the lens to your eye. Darker tints are better for sunny days while lighter tints are better for cloudy or snowy days with less sunlight.

VENTILATION

Most goggles have some kind of built-in vents to mitigate the fog and condensation that results from your sweat and body heat meeting the cold winter air. A few high end goggles might also include built-in fans to help distribute the moisture.

GOGGLE FRAME

This term refers to the piece that holds the proper shape of the goggles. Most frames are made of a kind of polyurethane plastic because it has some give and flexibility. Generally, a more flexible frame is better for colder temperatures.

That’s where the Burton Gloria’s come into play. They’re our pick for best waterproof snowboard pants. Other pants don’t quite compare in the category of dryness.

These pants feature GORE-TEX fabric (an industry leader for waterproof-ability) and fully taped seams to ensure moisture doesn’t sneak its way in on those vulnerable spots. As a bonus, their fabric is also super stretchy for superior mobility, and they have cargo pockets (perfect for stashing slope-side snacks)! These pants are a little bit pricier than some of the other picks on our list, but if staying dry is a priority for you, they’re well worth their slightly higher price tag.

Otherwise, these pants have waterproof technology, large thigh pockets, and an optional included belt to make for an enjoyable mountain experience whether you find yourself at the resort or the backcountry.

BEST RELAXED FIT PANT

Another one of our simpler picks on the list, the Volcom Frochickie’s are perfect if you’re looking for a low cost, relaxed fit option. They offer internal sleeves that can attach to your boots, ensuring snow won’t enter;  a ticket ring, so that even if you’re not sporting a jacket you can still hop on the lift; and even a butt patch for added durability (this is key if you’re just beginning and expect to spend some time sitting on the snow while you learn how to glide). The Frochickie’s are possibly the most basic pants on the list – they don’t come with many extra pockets or fancy features, but they serve the purpose of being warm and durable, and they won’t break the bank, so they’re perfect if you’re just getting started.

BEST BIB-LITE PANT

Interested in the bib-style snowboard pant, but not ready to fully commit? The Arc’teryx Shashka’s are a great in-between. They are considered bib-style, but really, they’re a high-waisted pant with a thin, flexible waist area and removable suspenders. Reviewers rave that the comfort level of these pants is unmatched – it’s not rare for them to make an appearance at après hour because they’re so comfortable, you won’t want to take them off! These wind and waterproof, fully breathable, flexible, durable, practical, and trendy women’s snowboard pants are well worth the money you’ll pay for them.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD PANTS

FABRIC

There is a whole lot of information to take in when it comes to choosing the best fabric for your snowboard pants! From the material itself to the characteristics of the materials and the way they behave, we could write a whole article on fabric alone. That’s why we’re bringing you this article from Tactics. It goes into detail on different snowboard pant fabrics so you can come back here and make an informed decision about which pants are right for you.

LENGTH

Everyone has a unique shape and size, which is why every pair of snowboard pants you see online might not fit you perfectly. Make sure to measure! The inseam is a great way to check the pant leg length and determine if the pant length matches your height. See the Features Explained section below to find out how to measure your inseam.

WEIGHT

Many women’s snowboard pants are being made more lightweight than ever without sacrificing warmth and performance, which is great! If you’re someone who gets extra chilly though, you may want to look for a pair of slightly heavier snowboard pants to ensure you stay warm while shredding.

STYLE

The two main styles of women’s snowboarding pants are the classic pants style and the bib style. This consideration comes down to personal preference. Bibs are like overalls for the snow and they’re great because they add an extra layer of supreme core warmth. They stay up easily and help hold all your other layers close to your body. They’re also considered very “in” when it comes to snowboard fashion. One downside to the bib: it’s way harder to pee with the bib than it is with the pants!

INSEAM

Measure from crotch to bottom of pant cuff to find this.

FABRIC VERSUS LINER FABRIC

In this article, the “Fabric” spec refers to the outer layer of the pants, while the “Liner Fabric” spec refers to the innermost layer of the pants.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SNOWBOARD PANTS

On the surface, most snow pants look the same, but if you want the best snowboard pants for you, you’re going to want to take some time to research the differences. Factors such as style, use, and comfort will play a huge role in your decision, so read through the keynotes below for some tips on buying your next pair. Or, if you want, find out more about how to buy the best snowboard pants.

STYLE

Do you want a bib or good ‘ole fashioned snow pants? If you don’t know which, here’s the difference: Bib style snow pants wrap up and around your shoulders with suspenders. They’ll keep you warmer, dryer, and more secure, but they are a bear to take on and off, so if convenience is your priority, stick to snowpants. Snow pants come up to your waist and won’t impair your mobility up top. But if you’re tending to extreme powder, a bib is more suited for you.

RIDING STYLE

Are you a beginner rider or more experienced? Do you ride casually or more aggressively? If casual is your answer, a relaxed fit may suit your needs best. But if aggressive riding is in your repertoire, then you might want to consider a tighter style pant or even a bib. They’re bound to stay glued to your body despite any rigid movements or inopportune crashes.

COMFORT AND FABRIC

Comfort may be the number one priority for you, in which case, you’ll want to make certain that you have the sizing just right when you buy online. That’s why we recommend checking out the sizing guides for each pair of pants you’re considering before you make your final decision. Snow pants may look the same, but they vary widely on how they feel. Each fabric can elicit a different feeling and level of warmth, so before you buy yours, we recommend trying a few out at your local slope.

COST

Any snow pant that only costs you a double digit number won’t be stupendous on the mountain. That’s not to say it doesn’t have a use, perhaps shoveling snow or playing in the backyard, but a proper snow pant is likely to cost you over a $100 dollars. From there, the pricier you go, the more durable the pant. But unlike with other items, price is not everything. Snow pants can always rip. So work your way up to the more expensive models before you dive in.
