BEST FOR:  FOG-FREE VENTILATION

Need an upgrade over your super budget-y and always foggy ski goggles? Then look no further than the I/O MAG ChromaPop ski goggles from industry leading manufacturer Smith. Sporting their specially designed AirEvac technology, they integrate perfectly with Smith head gear, allowing warm air to escape through the vents in your helmet.

Lens changes are also quick and easy with the I/O MAG (cool kid lingo for “on/off magnetic”) technology that uses 8 points of contact and 16 super strong magnets to attach the lenses to the frames.

These ski goggles also come in a variety of lens colors that are designed for specific conditions, whether you need low-light lenses for the most extreme conditions or bright light lenses for sunny days.

Smith Range

Smith Range

BEST FOR: SKIERS ON A BUDGET

If you’re looking for a comfortable performance goggle that won’t break the bank, check out the Ranges — they cost under $100.

“Smith designed the Range as the optimum budget goggle that offers a good balance of performance and comfort. The goggle’s large frame provides for complete visibility that eliminates the dreaded tunnel vision effect. It cushions the face with a multi-layer foam material and has been treated with an anti-fog coating.

What I like most about the Smith Range goggles is the way they look on your face thanks to the full frame and cylindrical lens.

Smith 4D Mag ChromaPop

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Spherical
  • Photochromic: Yes
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: No
  • Light Transmission: 12%
Features
  • Includes Interchangeable Bright And Low Light Lenses
  • Double-Layered Lenses & Anti-Fog Coatings Eliminate Fog
  • AirEvac Technology Pulls Warm Air And Vents Through Compatible Helmets

BEST FOR: AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTING TO CHANGING LIGHT CONDITIONS

Avid skiers that are shredding fresh powder no matter what the weather looks like will absolutely love the Smith 4D MAG ChromaPop Photochromic ski goggles. I know that title is a mouthful, so let’s unpack that!

First of all, the 4D refers to BirdsEye Vision tech that offers 25% more peripheral visibility compared to their I/O MAG ski goggles. By reducing the size of the frames near your cheekbones and curving the lenses downward even more, you regain a larger field of view especially when looking down.

ChromaPop is their proprietary color technology that relays true tones of your surroundings, meaning everything will look how its supposed to instead having a yellow (or red, or whatever color) tint to it. The MAG system is Smith’s easy on/off magnetic locking system that makes swapping out lenses super quick and super secure.

Lastly, and the best reason for buying these goggles, is the Photochromic technology that darkens the lenses when it becomes brighter and lightens them when it becomes overcast. This means you’ll always have the right amount of tint even in ever-changing conditions.

Anon M4 Toric MFI

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Cylindrical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: Yes
  • Light Transmission: 14 - 59%
Features
  • Lightweight, dual-molded PC-ABS/TPU construction combines a rigid outer frame and flexible inner frame for a comfortable, streamlined fit on the face
  • Triple-layer face foam with a moisture-wicking, Outlast® Fog Management face fleece layer improves antifogging while creating a comfortable seal and fit
  • PERCEIVE lenses offer high-contrast vision and terrain-defining clarity in just about any light condition
Anon M4 Toric MFI

BEST FOR: OPTICS

If you’re in search of the fastest lens change on the market, your search has come to an end — give these goggles a go.

The Anon M4 Toric MFI goggles are offered in both toric and cylindrical lens shape options. These feature upgraded magnets lens swapping technology from the previous M1, M2, and M3 iterations. The system makes it easy breezing to swap out a lens, even while you’re on the go. The M4 includes a magnetic clip-in facemask that serves as protection against the snow but won’t fog up your lens.

What I like most about the Toric MFI is how comfortable the triple layer foam makes them to wear as well as the variety of lens options to choose from.

Giro Method

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Cylindrical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: Yes
  • Light Transmission: .06 - 35%
Features
  • Giro antifog coating
  • Injection-molded cylindrical lens shape helps refine optics and minimize the distortion that can occur in thermoformed lenses
  • Expansion View Technology (EXV) offers unobstructed, panoramic views and excellent peripheral vision
Giro Method

BEST FOR: LARGE FACES

If you have a wider face than most and typically struggle with finding goggles that fit your face comfortably, give these a try.

Although these are top-notch performance goggles, the Giro Methods stand out in the sub-$200 category. The large frame is also low-profile to provide for excellent peripheral vision. The triple layered foam padding does an excellent job of conforming comfortably to your face. Two lenses are included with purchase of the goggles.

What I like most about the Giro Methods is that they’re suitable for skiers of all experience levels, whether you’re a beginner or you frequent the park.

Sweet Protection Interstellar

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Spherical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: No
  • Light Transmission: 12%
Features
  • Fits Seamlessly With Sweet Protection Helmets
  • Carbon Reinforced Frames Are Extremely Durable
  • Hydrophobic Coating Sheds Water In Wet Conditions

BEST FOR: FINGERPRINT-FREE LENS CHANGES

Possibly one of the most annoying things when skiing is finding that there’s a grimy fingerprint smudge smack dab in the middle of your lenses. Fortunately, with the Sweet Protection Interstellar ski goggles, you won’t have to worry about such frivolous matters anymore with their smudge-free, fingerprint-free, probably-made-with-alien-technology, interchangeable lenses!

Aside from smudges, these ski goggles are extremely durable and impact resistant. They also feature a technology that improves the contrast of your surroundings when visibility is low and light is scarce. That means you can keep skiing longer without having to worry about a lens change.

Lastly, the double-layered lenses not only resist fogging but also have pressure equalizing vents that prevent deformation of the inner lens that can occur over time with some pairs of goggles.

POC Fovea Mid Clarity Comp

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Spherical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: Yes
  • Light Transmission: 22%
Features
  • Includes Soft Pouch For Storage
  • Spare Lens Can Be Swapped Out For Low Light Skiing
  • Toric Lenses Decrease Distortion By Mimicking Your Eyes’ Curvature

BEST FOR: COMPETITION SKIING

Competition skiers looking for the most performance driven goggles will be delightfully surprised by the POC Fovea Mid Clarity Comp ski goggles. With enhanced contrast for distinguishing between perfect lines and potential obstacles, these ski goggles are high quality performers for elite competitors and serious recreational skiers.

Starting with spherical lenses that curve across the face (horizontally) as well as top-to-bottom (vertically), these ski goggles deflect intense glare that would otherwise blind the competition. Another notable feature with these lenses are their “toric” shape. This means that the curvature is designed to match that of your eyes more closely so as to eliminate any possibility for distortion, giving you a true view of what you’re seeing (check out the Features Explained section below for more info).

Oakley Airbrake XL

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Cylindrical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: No
  • Eyewear Compatible: No
  • Light Transmission: 18%
Features
  • Rigid Frames Are Durable And Deliver All Day Comfort
  • Impact Resistant Lenses Withstand The Test Of Time (And Risk)
  • Anti-Fog Coating Delivers Clear Vision And Reduces Moisture Build-Up

BEST FOR: DISCERNING TERRAIN IN LOW VISIBILITY

Low light skiing increases the challenge by blurring the lines between snow and horizon line. But with the Airbrake XL ski goggles from the legendary lens makers Oakley, you’ll have no problem discerning nuances in the terrain.

Featuring their in-house Prizm technology, these Oakley ski goggles are able to enhance the wavelengths of visible light to show distinctions in your surroundings that would be nearly impossible to see unassisted. The lenses are also extremely durable, sporting an impact resistant design crafted from injection-molded polycarbonate.

Lastly, these ski goggles have a proprietary “Switchlock” technology that makes swapping out lenses quick and easy.

Oakley Fall Line XM

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Cylindrical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: No
  • Eyewear Compatible: Yes
  • Light Transmission: 6% (bright) or 46% (low light)
Features
  • Impact Resistant Lenses Are Highly Durable
  • Includes Interchangeable Bright And Low Light Lenses
  • Rimless Frames Offer Wider Field Of View & Easy Helmet Integration

BEST FOR: WIDE FIELD OF VIEW

Sporting a rimless design for the frames, the Oakley Fall Line XM ski goggles offer a wider field of view than most other goggles on the market, giving you better peripheral vision to find the perfect line at high speeds and in transition.

The Fall Line XM’s come with 2 sets of interchangeable frames, a Pink Iridium lens that allows 46% visible light transmission (VLT) for overcast days and a Black Iridium lens that has just 6% VLT for bright, sunny days. You can easily swap out the lenses with Oakley’s Ridgelock Lens Change system, giving you the freedom to ski in just about any condition imaginable.

Lastly, these goggles include discrete notches that allow skiers to wear these over their prescription glasses making them accessible for all people.

Anon Sync

Specs
  • Lens Shape: Cylindrical
  • Photochromic: No
  • Additional Lenses Included: 1
  • Eyewear Compatible: Yes
  • Light Transmission: 6 - 57% (depending on lens)
Features
  • Over The Glass (OTG) Compatibility For Glasses Wearers
  • Anti-Fog Treatment & Channel Venting Eliminates Fogging
  • Magnetic Lenses Are Quick & Easy To Swap Out On The Fly

BEST FOR: SKIERS WITH GLASSES

While many goggles on our list feature and over-the-glasses (OTG) design, the Anon Sync ski goggles are perhaps the best for those wearing glasses while skiing due to its full perimeter channel venting system. This ensures that neither your lenses or your glasses will fog up during an intense ski sesh!

These goggles also come with a variety of lenses to choose from but it’s worth noting that they don’t all have the same visible light transmission (VLT). Starting from lowest to highest VLT: Silver lens (6%), Smoke (7%), Red (14%), Bronze (19%), Blue (46%), and Infrared (57%).

These lens colors are offered in specific combinations. For example, the Bronze and Blue lenses are mutually exclusive so if you wanted the Blue lens, you would either get the Red or Silver lens as the accompanying bright lens with low VLT.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SKI GOGGLES

LENS SHAPE

The first thing to keep in mind when deciding which ski goggles to buy is the shape of the lens. There are two common lens shapes to consider: cylindrical and spherical. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you know which one is best suited for your needs before making your purchase.

Cylindrical

These lenses curve across your face horizontally but are flat from top to bottom. They are a less expensive option than spherical lenses but also have a greater chance of catching glare.

Spherical

Providing better peripheral vision, less distortion, and catching less glare, spherical lenses curve both across your face as well as vertically, top to bottom. They are larger and more expensive than cylindrical lenses but provide better vision.

PHOTOCHROMIC

Photochromic lenses are some of the most advanced technology for protecting your eyes by automatically adjusting their tint level depending on how bright the sun is and how intense the UV rays are.

The brighter and more intense the UV rays, the darker the lenses become while staying clearer during overcast and snowy weather.

LIGHT TRANSMISSION

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is a measure of how much light is allowed to pass through the lenses of your ski goggles and is measured as a percentage. The lower the percentage, the less light is allowed to pass through. However, darker (closer to 0%) isn’t always better.

High visibility days with lots of sun and clear conditions will require goggles that have a low VLT (between 5% – 20%) in order to adequately protect your eyes from the sun, glare, and UV rays. They are usually found with lens colors that are often either gray, black, or gold and have a mirror effect.

Low light conditions such as foggy and/or snowy weather require more visibility (that is, more light passing through your lenses). They typically range from 60% – 90% VLT and are usually either blue, yellow, or rose colored.

There are also lenses that fall somewhere in the middle, allowing more versatility for a wider range of conditions, but less effective protection during the extremes. Consider grabbing a second lens that can serve as a backup for changing conditions.

VENTILATION

There are 3 major types of ventilation options available, many googles have more than 1 of these technologies, often having 2 or even all 3.

  • Double-Layered Lenses: Most, if not all, premium goggles feature double-layered lenses that create a thermal barrier when sealed properly. Similar to storm windows, they are naturally fog resistant.
  • Anti-Fog Coating: Another feature found on pretty much all premium goggles, anti-fog coatings are another great deterrent that can help you keep high visibility.
  • Vents: Many goggles feature vents on the top, bottom, and sides to allow warm air to escape and thus prevent your goggles from fogging.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Eyewear Compatible

Skiers who wear glasses may want to consider goggles that are able to fit over their existing frames. It’s a great convenience for those who may not want to wear contacts.

Additional Lenses

Some goggles come with a second (or third) lens. These can be swapped out depending on conditions, for brighter or foggier days, or can be used as a backup in case the first is scratched or damaged.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGY

Any type of tech that is created in-house by a specific manufacturer, typically created to remedy a common problem. Some versions of a proprietary technology, such as a waterproof material or locking mechanism, are widespread and change names from maker to maker as each manufacturer has crafted their own version.

TORIC LENSES

Toric lenses are curved similarly to standard spherical lenses in that they both curve across the face (horizontally) and also from top-to-bottom (vertically). What makes toric lenses unique is that they curve tighter horizontally and less so vertically, allowing them to mimic the curvature of your eyes and provide a more realistic and less distorted view of your surroundings.

Extreme snow sports like skiing come with an inherent risk of injury, but there are a variety of ways we can manage and reduce that risk. The best ski helmets are a key way to protect the most valuable part of your body (your brain) and they are a very, very low cost investment compared to hospital bills.

While a ski helmet doesn’t guarantee you’ll walk away unscathed, it could be the difference between life and death, or the difference between being back on the slopes next month versus being wheelchair-bound for the rest of your life.

All of the helmets we’ve selected for our list are of the highest quality, are made to meet the newest safety standards, and include the most cutting edge shock absorption and impact resistance technology.

Reviews - The Best Helmets for Skiing

Smith Vantage MIPS

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Construction: Hybrid
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 1.5 oz.
  • Vents: 21
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: Polycarbonate / Koroyd
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Available In Black Or Sage Green
  • Low Profile Design Reduces Bulk And Weight
  • Koroyd Lined Shell Inhibits Potential Damage Of Impacts

BEST FOR: LIGHTWEIGHT VENTILATION

While it technically doesn’t have the most air vents, it’s the strategic placement of them that gives the Smith Vantage MIPS the title of best ventilated helmet on the list.

It’s also one of the lightest helmets on the list, giving it a multifaceted design that excels in many areas rather than just a few. And it’s compatible with your current audio system, whether you’re rocking tethered or wireless earbuds.

The Vantage also rocks a hybrid construction that combines the benefits of two different styles of constructing a helmet – the result is an extremely strong yet lightweight design. Within the outer shell, the Vantage features Koroyd, a lab-engineered material that rates high in impact absorption and displacement of blunt forces that would otherwise cause more damage to your brain upon impact.

Smith Holt

Specs
  • Construction: Injection-molded
  • Weight: 1 lb. 3 oz.
  • Vents: 14
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: Injection-molded ABS
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Adjustable climate control with 14 vents dials in the right amount of airflow while the self-adjusting Lifestyle fit system ensures a comfortable hold
  • Bombshell ear pads; removable goggles lock
  • Compatible with Aleck, Outdoor Tech and Skullcandy audio systems (not included)
Smith Holt

BEST FOR: SKIERS ON A BUDGET

For under $100, you’d be hard pressed to find a helmet that’s better made or better looking.

The Holt provides for plenty of warmth and comfort for those long, cold winter days. The ABS construction is high quality but not as technically advanced as many of the other helmets on this list. Its fixed ventilation system includes 10 different vents that aren’t adjustable but provide for plenty of airflow on their own. One of the best things about the Smith Holt is that compared to other budget offerings, this helmet does not have that misshapen mushroom look.

What I like most about the Smith Holt — other than the affordable cost — is the adjustment system which features an elasticized band at the back of the helmet that stretches to accommodate noggins of various sizes.

Smith Mission MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: In-mold
  • Weight: 15.9 ounces
  • Vents: 14
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: Polycarbonate
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Lightweight In-mold helmet incorporates Aerocore™ construction and Koroyd® material for breathability and maximized impact protection
  • Rotational motion can cause brain injuries; with MIPS, a low-friction layer slides 10 to 15mm in all directions, reducing rotational motion to the brain during impact
  • Snapfit SL earpads
Smith Mission MIPS

BEST FOR: BOTH RESORT AND BACKCOUNTRY USE

When you enjoy long days at the resort but also find yourself venturing into the backcountry, reach for a helmet that will serve both purposes.

Smith designed the Mission MIPS with the perfect blend of resort and backcountry specific safety features. This helmet features adjustable vents, a warm interior linter, and both MIPS and Koroyd technology. The brand successfully blended features and performance to make for a quality all-around noggin saver — wherever you find yourself on the mountain.

What I like most about the Mission MIPS is how lightweight it is for the price. This helmet weighs in at just over 1.8 pounds.

Salomon Mountain Lab

Specs
  • Construction: Hybrid in-mold
  • Weight: 10.5 ounces
  • Vents: Active ventilation
  • Visor: No
  • Audio System Compatible: No
Features
  • Odor resistant merino wool lining wicks moisture to boost comfort
  • When the temperatures rise active ventilation helps cool you down
  • Custom dial fit provides a secure and reliable fit every run
Salomon Mountain Lab

BEST FOR: DEDICATED BACKCOUNTRY SKIERS

This hybrid mountaineering and ski helmet is perfectly suited for backcountry adventures — not to mention the lightest we’ve tested to date.

Salomon’s Mountain Lab ski helmet is extremely well vented and features a removable liner that can be washed as needed. It weights in at just 12.7 ounces but still provides for plenty of protection from falling debris and impacts. This helmet is compatible with attachment points for both ski goggles and mountaineering headlamps. There are ample fixed vents situated throughout the helmet, making for a high degree of breathability compared to many other helmets on this list.

What I like most about the Salomon Mountain Lab is how reasonably it’s priced for such a high-end niche product.

Smith Quantum MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: In-Mold
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 5 oz.
  • Vents: 22
  • Visor: Yes
  • Shell Material: High-Impact ABS Plastic / Koroyd
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Available In 5 Different Colors
  • Strap & Buckle System Make Gearing Up A Breeze
  • AirEvac Tech Pulls Warm Air From Your Goggles Through The Helmet’s Vents

BEST FOR: PREMIUM COMFORT

Your helmet doesn’t need to feel like an encumbrance, which is why the Smith Quantum MIPS springs for premium comfort while retaining top-of-the-line safety tech.

Featuring Koroyd in the lining of the exterior shell, this helmet doubles down safety and comfort all at the same time. Koroyd is a lab-engineered “squishy” tubing that is not only comfortable, but also spreads out an impact over the entire surface area of the helmet. This redirects the forces acting upon the helmet to spread them thin and weaken them.

The Quantum MIPS helmet also features the Boa FS360 system, which is a single-dial knob that allows you to make slight, incremental adjustments to the fit of your helmet while on the go. No need to remove your helmet to get the perfect fit!

POC Obex SPIN

Specs
  • Construction: Hybrid
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 2 oz.
  • Vents: 11
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: High-Impact ABS Plastic / Polycarbonate
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Available In White Or Black
  • Works Seamlessly With POC Brand Goggles
  • Sliding Vent Covers Can Be Opened/Closed To Regulate Body Temperature

BEST FOR: GROUPS OR PARENTS

Featuring an integrated communication headset that can pair with your smartphone via Bluetooth, the POC Obex SPIN Communication ski helmet is a premium choice for those needing to stay in communication with others.

Parents with children on the slopes would benefit greatly from this helmet, especially when skill levels vary. Now, each parent can split up and take different routes with their kids all while staying in close communication.

Ski patrollers or those overseeing a group of skiers can also take advantage of the communication aspect. More simply, the Bluetooth speakers can be used to listen to some tunes as you carve your way down the mountain.

Safety-wise, this helmet is of the highest quality. It features SPIN technology (Shearing Pad INside) which functions in exactly the same way as MIPS (see the Things To Consider section below for more information), the most cutting edge helmet technology that drastically reduces the risk of head and neck injury.

Sweet Protection Switcher MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: Hybrid
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 4.1 oz.
  • Vents: 24
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: Variable Elasticity Hybrid Shell
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Available In 4 Different Colors
  • Moisture-Wicking Helmet Liner Is Removable And Washable
  • Magnetic Buckle Is Easy To Fasten Even When Wearing Gloves Or Mittens

BEST FOR: VARIETY OF CONDITIONS

No matter if the weather is warm and sunny or bone chillingly cold, the Sweet Protection Switcher MIPS ski helmet will keep you at a comfortable temperature all day and across the whole mountain. With a whopping 24 air vents (tied for most on our list) that can be adjusted with a single hand, this ski helmet will help you vent warm air to stay cool or trap it to stay warm!

Safety-wise, this ski helmet has a variable elasticity hybrid shell which means that it blends the best of the two most common materials (ABS plastic and polycarbonate) used to craft helmets. By reinforcing the super lightweight and highly impact resistant polycarbonate with a super hard ABS shell, the Switcher MIPS becomes even more efficient at redirecting localized impacts across the entire helmet to weaken the forces acting upon your head to keep your noggin in-tact.

The Switcher MIPS also sports a single-dial adjustment system that can tighten or loosen the fit and allows you to make micro-adjustments with a single hand while on the go.

Oakley MOD3 MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: In-Mold
  • Weight: N/A
  • Vents: 6
  • Visor: Yes
  • Shell Material: Polycarbonate
  • Audio System Compatible: No
Features
  • Available In White, Black, Or Gray
  • Streamlined Design Is Lightweight And Aerodynamic
  • Goggle Holders Keep Them Attached Even When Resting On The Helmet

BEST FOR: CUSTOMIZED FIT

Dialing in just the right fit can be a pain in the you-know-what for many helmets out there. Thankfully, Oakley takes comfort and custom fit to the next level with their MOD3 MIPS ski helmet.

Sporting a Modular Brim System (MBS) that can be customized to fit larger or smaller framed goggles, you’ll be able to seamlessly match your existing pair. It also has a Boa tightening system for creating a perfect fit and allows for micro adjustments while on the move.

The magnetic clasp for the chin strap also makes this helmet easy to remove even with a gloved hand.

Smith Level MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: Hybrid
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 3 oz.
  • Vents: 20
  • Visor: Yes
  • Shell Material: Polycarbonate / Koroyd
  • Audio System Compatible: Yes
Features
  • Available In 5 Different Colors
  • Removable Ear Pads For Warmer Or Chillier Days
  • Ventilation Allows Warm, Moist Air To Escape From Goggles To Prevent Fogging

BEST FOR: AMPLE AMOUNT OF FEATURES

Want to stay level headed on the mountain? Keep your head in the game with the Smith Level MIPS ski helmet. It’s got a little bit of everything to offer.

This ski helmet has a brim to keep the sun out of your eyes, a strap to hang onto your goggles, and a single slider to control the opening/closure of all 20 vents just to name a few features. The AirEvac 2 system helps pull warm, moist air from your goggles and vents it through the top of your helmet and the strap system features removable ear pads that keep you warm on extra cold outings.

The liner of the exterior shell has Koroyd, a lab-engineered material featuring an open-cell framework that is both breathable and shock-absorbent.

Sweet Protection Igniter II MIPS

Specs
  • Construction: Injection-Molded
  • Weight: 1 lbs. 2.7 oz.
  • Vents: 24
  • Visor: No
  • Shell Material: Injection-Molded Thermoplastic

BEST FOR: TERRAIN PARK SKIERS

High flying stunt junkies and rail grinding daredevils will be sufficiently protected wearing the Sweet Protection Igniter II MIPS ski helmet. It uses the highest quality materials to keep your noggin safe all while looking, well…sweet!

The Igniter II is a perfect fit for skiers who may be more prone to head injuries than the casual rider. Featuring MIPS technology (Multi-directional Impact Protection System), this helmet uses biomimicry to mimic what the body would do during a head or neck injury. MIPS uses a slip-plane system where the outer shell of the helmet is able to “slip” against the inner shell, allowing the rotational forces to be redirected and have less impact on your skull (see the Things To Consider section below for more info).

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SKI HELMETS

MIPS – Multi-directional Impact Protection System

Most if not all of the helmets on our list are MIPS certified as they provide the best defense to protecting your brain than helmets without it. When a crash occurs, rotational forces are almost always at play and can severely affect the brain.

When a head or neck injury occurs, the body protects itself by using cerebrospinal fluid to redirect those rotational forces. MIPS-designed helmets mimic this by using a slip-plane system that allows an inner shell (attached to your head) to slip against the outer shell (where the rotational forces are acting on).

Considering how many lives have been saved and potentially catastrophic or traumatic brain injuries have been avoided using MIPS, it’s practically a non-negotiable helmet feature. Your chosen helmet must have this.

HELMET CONSTRUCTION

In-Mold

Sleek and light, helmets made with an in-mold process attach the shock-absorbing foam interior to the shell (exterior) in a single molding process.

Injection-Molded

Offering slightly more durability than in-mold helmets, injection-molded helmets use a 2 stage process to bond the shock-absorbing foam to a separate shell.

Hybrid

Considered one of the strongest types of helmet constructions, hybrid helmets blend the two aforementioned methods to create an insanely strong yet lightweight helmet.

SHELL MATERIAL

High-Impact ABS Plastic

One of the two most common materials used for the outer shell of a helmet, ABS is a plastic that is extremely hard but also heavy, making it an outstanding material for impact resistance. It’s also less expensive than polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate

Lighter, yet more expensive, polycarbonate has twice the impact strength of ABS plastic. It also has twice the tensile strength, making it more flexible than ABS yet half as likely to become damaged under the same pressure.

Koroyd

A synthetically made, “squishy” tube-like material, Koroyd is used as a liner on the interior portion of a helmet’s shell. Its purpose is to spread and displace impact from a single location across the entire helmet (i.e. shock-absorption).

Variable Elasticity Hybrid Shell

Synthesizing the best of each, a variable elastic hybrid shell combines an in-molded polycarbonate (lightweight construction + light/flexible/highly impact resistant material) with an ABS hard shell construction for reinforcement and redistribution of forces.

Injection-Molded Thermoplastic

Thermoplastics are another common material used in the construction of helmets (especially for firefighters). The process involves heating, cooling, and reheating the plastic to reinforce its strength (similar to the way steel is tempered for Katanas – ninja swords). Thermoplastics are incredibly durable and impact resistant.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Vents

Vents help regulate your body temperature by allowing you to stay cool when you’re active. Additionally, some helmets have the option to close vents to retain warmth on chillier days.

Visor/Brim

A visor or brim can be a nice accessory to help keep the sun out of your eyes. In the event of a collision, a visor could also prevent you from breaking your nose.

Audio System Compatibility

While some helmets come with built in speakers, most have an option to wire your earbuds into the earpieces for music or keeping a 2-way radio handy.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BOA TIGHTENING SYSTEM

Named after the Boa Constrictor that tightens to constrict its prey, a boa tightening system uses a dial/knob that tightens the entire helmet with a single turn. Once you’ve made the major fitting adjustments before riding, you can use the boa system for micro adjustments to dial in the perfect fit.

REMOVABLE EAR PADS

Ear pads are designed to cushion your ears and keep them safe in the event of a fall while also keeping them warm. Most ear pads can be removed or have earbud headphones wired into them.

GOGGLE HOLDERS

Goggle holders are mounted on the back of a helmet and allow you to snap in the goggle band. When you take your goggles off and rest them on top of your helmet, they won’t fall off.

They come in three different inseam lengths to cater to a variety of heights, and they can convert into capris by rolling up the legs and keeping them in place with the integrated snaps.

The knees are reinforced with stitching, so if you tend to scum your knees across the rock when you’re bouldering, these will hold up. The fabric is also water and wrinkle resistant, so these transition easily to town to celebrate with a beer once you send your project.

The gusset crotch and articulated knees make it easy to high step – or even do the splits, if that’s what’s necessary to send.

The elastic waist of the Mantra is incredibly comfortable, and the drawstring allows you to cinch it up as tight as you need it. The elastic bottom cuffs also make it easy to keep your eye on your feet and on your next foothold. As an added touch for boulderers, the Mantra has an integrated brush holder for when those holds get chalky.

The cotton fabric has a touch of lycra to provide stretch, and the gusseted crotch allows for freedom of movement. A zippered back pocket keeps your essentials secure while you’re trying hard, and a snap back pocket holds the extras.

The Venga Rock Pants have plenty of pockets, including rear pockets that also serve as reinforcement for the seat when you’re sitting on boulders. • Inseam: 30 in, 32 in, 34 in
Features
  • Durable Cordura Denim Fabric
  • Low Profile Hardwear
  • Integrated Climbing Brush Pocket
Black Diamond Forged Denim

BEST FOR: LIFESTYLE

The Black Diamond Forged Denim pants look like a nice pair of jeans, but they were designed completely with climbing in mind. The Cordura fabric resists abrasion, even when you’re working your bouldering project over and over again, and has lots of stretch so you can get that heel hook. The Forged Denim also has a special pocket for your climbing brush.

But these are great jeans that will take you beyond bouldering. The slim, tapered fit helps you perform well on the rock and look good off it. The Forged Denim pants are lightweight and breathable, so you can wear them all day, whether you’re climbing or hanging out around town.

The North Face North Dome

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Closure: Zipper & Button with Drawcord
  • Fabric: 98% Organic Cotton / 2% Elastane
  • Gender: Men's & Women's
  • Inseam: Men’s 32 in, Women’s 31 in
Features
  • Drawcord Waist Also Works as a Chalk Bag Loop
  • Rear Pocket Has Hidden Brush Compartment
  • Cinch System on Ankle Cuffs to Adjust Length

BEST FOR: GYM BOULDERING

The North Face North Dome pants will keep you comfy and stylish throughout your gym sessions. Your movement on the boulder problems won’t be restricted, thanks to a gusseted crotch and articulated knees. Plus, the waist drawcord doubles as a chalk bag loop in the rear, so you can keep your chalk handy during an endurance session. One of the back pockets also includes a hidden brush compartment.

The ankle cuffs cinch up to keep extra fabric out of your way and adjust the length. The cotton fabric might not be the most durable for outdoor bouldering, but it works great in the gym and looks good wherever you’re headed after you’re done training.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BOULDERING PANTS

You want to have full freedom of movement in your bouldering pants, so they don’t inhibit you on any hard moves. They should also be comfortable enough that you pretty much forget about them when you’re working your project or lounging on the crashpad. Some bouldering pants have features like large, zippered pockets or brush holders that might be useful, depending on your needs, but really, the most important thing is that your bouldering pants stay out of your way. EMS offers a few suggestions for choosing clothing to wear while climbing, and Outside Online spoke to an expert at Patagonia about why technical pants can be a better choice for climbing than generic leggings.

FIT

Whenever you’re buying a pair of pants, fit is always a key factor influencing comfort and performance. For bouldering pants, you want to be sure you have freedom of movement, so the pants shouldn’t fit too tight, unless they have plenty of stretch. Also, you should check the inseam to be sure they aren’t too long and won’t get in the way of your footwork. In fact, lots of bouldering pants cinch at the ankle with either elastic or a drawstring to keep the fabric out of your way.

STRETCH

No matter how flexible you are, your pants should never limit you from making a tough move. Bouldering pants should have at least some give to the fabric, and many stretch thanks to a small percentage of spandex in the fabric.

DURABILITY

When you’re bouldering, especially outside, you want pants that will last and not abrade on the rock. Plus, you’ll often find yourself taking a seat on various natural surfaces, so you don’t want your seat to snag. Thicker fabric is usually more durable to stand up to approach hikes as well.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

GUSSET CROTCH

The seam in the crotch is created in a diamond shape to provide freedom of movement and comfort.

ARTICULATED KNEES

The fabric at the knees contains sewn darts which help the leg bend in a natural way.

WATER REPELLENT

The fabric is given a treatment of a durable water repellent (DWR) so liquid beads up rather than soaking in.

Spy makes a great, affordable goggle with the Woot.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING SKI GOGGLES

FIT

This is very important to take into consideration if you have an abnormally sized head. If most caps, helmets, or face masks fit you, I wouldn’t worry much about the size of your goggles. That being said, if you do have a big head, you may want to look into how large the goggles fit.

HELMET GRIP / SILICONE STRAP

Ever owned a pair of goggles that just won’t stop sliding around on your helmet? A silicone strip on your helmet strap will grip the helmet, preventing just that.

LENS SHAPE

Cylindrical lenses are the style nowadays. All 5 of the goggles in this list are cylindrical, which is highly recommended for snow sports. You get the most of your peripherals, and the lenses are quickly interchangeable. What more could you want?

UV PROTECTION

Fortunate for your eyes, all of the lenses listed above feature 100% UV protection. What does that mean? Well, you can wear goggles for 8 hours a day and not damage your eyes at all. Your eyes will be much better protected than wearing a polarized pair of goggles, or a simple pair of sunglasses. Light reflection off snow can cause serious optic damage, which is why you should never wear a pair of polarized goggles while skiing or snowboarding.

VENTILATION

Goggle fog sucks. Reviews are the most dependable way to know whether or not goggles breathe well. Don’t trust all the different technologies that brands promote, but instead ask someone for their opinion or read the reviews online. At the end of the day, you will need to find the most effective layering system to keep you at an ideal temperature. But the goggles you purchase can make that process much simpler.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

LENS ENHANCES CONTRAST AND VISIBILITY

Lenses with enhanced contrast improve overall visibility. You’ll see shadows more clearly, especially on difficult terrain. All of this ultimately allows for a better view of the slope.

HELMET COMPATIBILITY

Fortunately, all recent goggles are helmet compatible. If you are purchasing new goggles, chances are they will fit your snow helmet. Also, WEAR. A. HELMET.

LIFETIME WARRANTY

If you plan to use your goggles for multiple seasons, be sure to check if your goggles are covered by a warranty. Smith Optics, for example, will replace your goggles if the damage is inhibiting your vision. This simple feature may save you a lot of money in the long run!

LOW LIGHT LENS

Be sure to purchase a pair of goggles that include a free low-light lens. This will save you money in the long run. Frankly, skiing in low light conditions with the wrong lenses can be very dangerous. Protect yourself and others by investing in a set of goggles that has two different lens types.

Reviews - The Best Pants for Climbing

Prana Stretch Zion

Specs
  • Best For: All Around Climbing
  • Material: 97% Nylon / 3% Spandex
  • Design: Not Articulated - Relies On Stretchiness
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Treatment
Features
  • Very Stretchy Design Provides Excellent Mobility
  • Roll Up Leg Cuff Snaps
  • Built-In Belt To Keep Your Pants Up While You Crush
  • UPF 50+ Sun Protection

BEST FOR: ALL-ROUND PERFORMANCE

The standard go-to pant for many climbers over the years is the Zion, and it’s certainly not hard to see why! PrAna has placed a premium on comfort and mobility with these pants with their nylon-spandex blend which prevents bunching and pinching. The loose-fitting design also contributes to this goal by making the pants extra comfortable so it’ll feel easy to pull off your favorite moves.

We’re particularly fond of the leg snaps that allow you to secure these pants above the ankle. No more climbing with one pant leg up and one awkwardly unfolding back down to your ankle! Some climbers report that the weatherproof DWR finish can be beefed up. But compared to all the benefits of these pants designed specifically for us climbers, this is a fairly minor issue.

Black Diamond Notion Pant

BEST FOR: GYM CLIMBING

For spending a whole day at the gym working on your project, relaxing with friends, giving a belay here, and jumping on the bouldering wall there, you won’t find a better pair of climbing pants than the Notion. These pants are incredibly comfortable and will flow up the wall with absolutely zero resistance. This is due to the very loose and stretchy construction that fits almost like your favorite pair of baggy lounge sweatpants.

The extreme comfort and non-technicality behind these pants also make them ideal for an easy hiking trip, or jumping on the bike, or doing a little yoga. All this comfort and stretch comes with one significant downside, however. These are not the most durable pants on our list, and it’s for that reason that we recommend them for gym only climbing as we’re not sure they will hold up to tough outdoor climbing.

Arc’teryx Gamma AR

Specs
  • Best For: Cold weather climbing
  • Material: 46% nylon / 46% polyester / 8% elastane
  • Design: Articulated Knees And Gusseted Crotch
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Finish
Features
  • Zippered fly with metal hook closure; adjustable waist pocket
  • Straight leg; seamless instep
  • Thigh pocket with laminated zipper; 2 zippered hand pockets
  • Contains materials that meet the bluesign® criteria
Arc’teryx Gamma AR

BEST FOR: COLD WEATHER CLIMBING

When you’re climbing in snowy, windy wintry conditions, you want a high quality durable pant with excellent weather resistance — and these pants deliver just that.

Arc’teryx designed the Gamma AR pants with big mountain objectives in mind. The fabric’s four way stretch allows for complete freedom of movement, especially combined with the gusseted crotch and built-in articulation across the knees. This year’s model features adjustable cuffs that fit easily over mountaineering boots, as well as retraceable lace hooks that help you to really dial in the perfect fit for you. Two zippered hand pockets and a thigh pocket with a handy dandy laminated zipper finish off the features.

What I like most about the Gamma AR pants is how breathable they are for a cold weather specific pant.

prAna Axiom Jeans

Specs
  • Best For: Versatility
  • Material: 99% cotton / 1% spandex
  • Design: Gusseted Crotch
  • Water Resistant: No
Features
  • Stretch denim material is durable without hindering mobility
  • Inseam gusset allows legs to move freely
  • Standard fit is slightly roomy through the legs without being baggy
prAna Axiom Jeans

BEST FOR: WEARING FROM THE CRAG TO THE CITY

If you frequent the crag in between urban activities, these are a suitable (and fashionable) option.

The Axiom Jeans are made from a super stretchy durable blend of cotton and elastane that holds up well to use and abuse, plus an improved fit and range of motion over non-jean alternatives. They feature a relaxed fit through the hips and a bit of a widening through the cuffs, like a traditional boot cut style. Features include a climbing-specific gusseted crotch and four large, functional pockets — two in the front and two in the rear.

What I like most about these climbing pants is how fast they dry out when wet.

Patagonia Gritstone

Specs
  • Best For: Trad climbing
  • Material: 7.9 oz. 67% organically grown cotton / 33% polyester stretch canvas
  • Design: Articulated Knees And Gusseted Crotch
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Finish
Features
  • Zip fly with belt loops and OppoSet® adjustable waist
  • Drop-in pockets have breathable mesh pocket bags and lay-flat construction for comfort under a harness
  • 2 rear, top-entry pockets create added durability
  • Reinforced knees add durability and accommodate kneepads for aid sessions
Patagonia Gritstone

BEST FOR: TRAD CLIMBING

When you need the best combination of durability and comfort for those long, multi-pitch days on the wall, consider the Patagonia Gritstones.

Patagonia designed the Gritstone rock pants with mobility and abrasion resistance in mind, both important considerations when you’re tackling the cracks and off-widths that define a crucial element of trad climbing. The fit is low profile and the OppoSet adjustable waist can be customized as the wearer pleases. These pants include drop-in pockets with breathable mesh bags and reinforced construction through the knees.

What I like most about these climbing pants is the DWR coating which serves to provide for weather resistant, odor prevention, and breathability.

Arc’teryx Gamma LT

Specs
  • Best For: Multi-pitch Climbing
  • Material: 88% Nylon / 12% Elastane
  • Design: Articulated Knees And Gusseted Crotch
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Treatment
Features
  • Hip and Thigh With Laminated Zippers For Storing Small Valuables
  • Pant Cuffs Have Adjustable Drawcord To Keep Them In Just The Right Place
  • Built-In Belt To Keep Your Pants From Falling Down While You Climb

BEST FOR: MULTI-PITCH CLIMBING

When it comes to getting the very best on the market, Arc’teryx always seems to deliver. In this case they’ve delivered the Gamma LT which are easily some of the best climbing pants that money can buy. A comfortable stretchy design with articulated patterns make these pants simply flow up the wall. No pulling here or pinching there!

They also have a water resistant treatment for when those annoying rain squalls roll through, along with laminated pockets to keep all your items safe. The built-in belt and adjustable cuff drawcords allow you to adjust these pants just the way you like them to reach your climbing zen. Be aware, however, that while these pants are phenomenally constructed, they are significantly more expensive than much of the competition.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro

Specs
  • Best For: Sport Climbing
  • Material: 94% Nylon / 6% Spandex
  • Design: Articulated Knees And Two-Way Stretch Design
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Treatment
Features
  • Sleek Athletic Fit Looks Good For Casual Wear
  • Sustainably Produced
  • Low-Profile Design Helps Prevent Snagging Or Rubbing On The Wall
  • UPF 50 Sun Protection

BEST FOR: SPORT CLIMBING

While often overlooked in the search for rock climbing pants, the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro is nevertheless a solid performer! The stretchy material moves very easily with you through every type of move and feature while the low profile athletic cut will minimize snags and holdups in cramped quarters. This athletic cut also allows you to roll the pant legs up above your calves if you prefer, and they won’t roll back down in the middle of your climb!

The DWR treatment is also fairly effective in shedding water if you happen to get caught in a mist or drizzle. But when the sun comes out, the UPF 50 protection will give you a little cover. While we love the stretchiness of these pants, it’s worth pointing out that Eddie Bauer’s sewing scheme or thread material isn’t well suited for extreme movement. Over several months and years, the thread holding the pockets together will often begin to fail, and this appears to be a universal problem for all Guide Pro wearers.

Outdoor Research Cirque

Specs
  • Best For: Mountaineering
  • Material: 50% Nylon / 43% Polyester / 7% Spandex
  • Design: Articulated Knees
  • Water Resistant: Yes - DWR Treatment
Features
  • Durable And Abrasion Resistant
  • Boot Lace Hook To Secure Pants To Your Mountaineering Footwear
  • Warm Yet Breathable Materials
  • Wind Resistant

BEST FOR: MOUNTAINEERING

Alpine climbing can certainly be a chilly experience, but that’s why we have the Cirque. These pants feature a double-weave design built especially to lock in the heat for you mountaineers out there. The bootlace hook and wind resistant design also work in tandem to make these pants suitable for those wintery conditions on top of the world!

While a little heavy and pricey for your standard day to day climbing, the Cirque still features articulated knees and a stretchy fit to get you the movement you need on every wall. All in all, however, these pants are best reserved for the mountain. If you have easy cragging or gyming in your future, we recommend you opt for some lighter pants.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi

Specs
  • Best For: Multi-pitch Climbing
  • Material: 86% Nylon / 14% Spandex
  • Design: Articulated Knees
  • Water Resistant: Yes
Features
  • Very Durable Yet Light Construction
  • Good Breathability For Hot Days
  • Excellent Mobility
  • Wind Resistant
  • UPF 50 Sun Protection

BEST FOR: MULTI-PITCH TRAD CLIMBING

Spending all day on an exposed face requires a pair of climbing pants that can brush off everything the weather can throw at it, and remain comfortable for climbing at the same time. The Ferrosi from Outdoor Research does just that! These lightweight pants are both wind and water resistant to stand fast in the face of any inclement weather that may blow in. But the sun itself can be an enemy on a perfectly clear day, hence the 50 UPF sun protection that the Ferrosi also sports.

Yet for all this protection and durability, the Ferrosi still stretches and moves with the best of them to give you ultimate mobility on the wall. We do wish that Outdoor Research had taken the time to include an integrated belt or waist-cinch system, but this is a small price to pay for all the benefits offered by the Ferrosi.

Mountain Hardwear AP

Specs
  • Best For: All Around Climbing
  • Material: 75% Cotton 23% Nylon 2% Elastane
  • Design: Articulated Knees
  • Water Resistant: No
Features
  • Roll Up Snaps
  • Very Stylish Design That Looks Good Anywhere
  • Reflective Strips When Rolled Up

BEST FOR: VERSATILITY

If a pair of climbing pants that can also work for cycling, or for hiking, or wearing for a night out on the town sounds like what you’re looking for, then check out the AP from Mountain Hardware. The cotton-nylon design looks very sleek in just about any social setting, but it’s hiding a feature or two that also make it perfect for the crag.

The articulated knees help significantly with smooth movement, while the integrated snaps will keep those pant legs secure above your ankles. Rolling up the pant legs will also reveal two reflective strips that are absolutely perfect for cycling, hiking, or climbing after dark. These pants are unfortunately much more stiff than other options on the list, which may make them ride up with use. The very versatile style and design, however, easily bump the AP into the best climbing pants list.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING CLIMBING PANTS

WEATHERPROOFING

Have some epic outdoor climbing adventures in mind? Then you should also consider investing in some climbing pants that feature a little weatherproofing! You just never know when some mist, or drizzle, or other inclement weather will roll in, especially if you’re eyeing an alpine climb.

The front line of defense in this department are climbing pants with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish. This will help water bead up and run off rather than soak into your pants, and can be a lifesaver in rough weather. Remember that a DWR finish can slowly degrade over time with multiple uses and washes, however. For the most in-depth advice on how to care for your DWR finished pant, check out this article from REI.

Another item to consider, more so for you alpine climbers, is some form of wind-resistance built into your climbing pants. This will help keep you nice and warm during your adventure by locking out that windchill.

COMFORT AND MATERIAL

Spending hours or days in your favorite rock climbing pants is not to be taken lightly. You need a pair that is functional for what you’ll be climbing, will hold up to the rigors of your adventure, and most importantly, is comfortable to wear!

You’ll find a plethora of different material blends out there on the market, which are broken down here to make it easy to choose. In general, however, you’ll be looking for something that incorporates some stretch in order to move with you on the wall and stay comfortable through every route. This stretchiness is most often accomplished by blending with ether spandex, lycra, or elastane.

CUFF SECURING

I’m certainly amongst the ‘I can’t climb with my pant leg touching my ankles’ crew. Luckily for us, many of the best climbing pants out there include snaps or buttons on the pant cuff to secure them above the ankle for all your climbing adventures. Occasionally we’ll also see a design that includes these snaps midway up the calf so you can secure your pants even higher.

Whether you want this luxury or not comes down to your own personal preference. The absence of these snaps doesn’t exclude you from just rolling up your pant legs to your desired length, of course. But the added security of the snaps to make sure those cuffs don’t roll down mid-climb is always beneficial!

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ARTICULATED DESIGNS

The best climbing pants will often incorporate some type of knee articulation into their designs in order to improve mobility. This involves adding extra material and adopting a sewing scheme that moves with – instead of restricts – knee movement.

Gentlemen, climbing pants designed for us will also go one step further and include a gusseted crotch. This design includes more material sewn into that region that, anatomically speaking, makes pulling off tough moves on the crag much more comfortable.

Nothing’s worse than scoping out your next move, swinging your leg out, and then hitting the cutoff point for your pants’ mobility. But, both of these features will help prevent that from happening and keep you at peak climbing performance!

BAGGY VS. ATHLETIC CUT

Some folks love baggy climbing pants for their freedom, mobility, and comfort. Other climbers, however, prefer a more athletic – or tighter – pant that’s low profile and stretchy enough to provide the mobility you need. Both pant types can work perfectly for climbing, and the decision will ultimately come down to your own personal preference.

For reference, we tend to suggest that the baggy versions are most suitable for bouldering or gym climbing. But once you’re out there on some technical or multi-pitch climbs, it’s better to adopt more technical/athletic pants as these won’t brush against the rock as much and are traditionally more durable than their baggy counterparts.

CHALK BAG LOOP AND BRUSH POCKET

When you have a pair of pants designed by climbers for climbers, you will often find an integrated chalk bag loop. This is simply a loop on the back of the pants for you to clip your chalk bag to for easy access. We find this feature most beneficial for bouldering when you don’t want to be lumbered with strapping into your full-on climbing harness – which will likely have a chalk bag loop too.

The brush pocket is just what it sounds like. Not to give your teeth a polish mid-climb, but to scrape any accumulated chalk off holds before you make your move. Once again, this is most beneficial for bouldering, but can also be handy if you’re cleaning a route outside on the crag.

What are the best mountain bikes? Oceans of craft beer and specialty coffee have been consumed during discussions of that topic, and still, nobody has answered the question, because there really isn’t an answer. Mountain biking embraces a range of disciplines and bikes are available in a dizzying variety of types, styles, and prices. There is no one best mountain bike, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find the best mountain bike for you! We’ve made that process a little simpler by collecting some top contenders in a variety of popular categories.

We started this list with a few assumptions. First, we assume that you’re male: if you’re a woman, we have a list of your top options here. We’re also assuming that, like most casual riders, you’re a generalist. We bet that you’re looking for a bike that will allow you to ride cross country, trail, and Enduro (or All Mountain), depending on what you’re feeling that day. We tried to select bikes that bridge categories and give you some versatility because most of us don’t ride the same trail or the same type of terrain every day! Let’s look at the top choices in a range of styles and prices.

Disclaimer: Modern mountain bikes are complicated, and the jargon can be confusing at first! We’ve tried to keep it simple, but if you see terms that you don’t understand, check the explanatory sections that follow the reviews. We’ve provided more detail on every term we discuss here, and there are links you can read for more information.

They say “steel is real,” and this competitively priced entry from Marin is as real as they get. The high strength of steel allows the use of graceful narrow diameter tubing, and the simple frame and rigid fork give the Pine Mountain a sleek, elegant look. BEST YOU CAN BUY

Every day since 1999, Yeti has closed their factory in Colorado’s Front Range from 11:30 AM to 1 PM so their employees can ride their bikes. The SB5 “Lunch Ride” build is based on the tweaks developed by Yeti’s experts to maximize the performance of their personal bikes on those daily rides. There’s a long list of changes, but they all add up to one incredible mountain bike. You can spend quite a bit more on a trail bike if you want to, but we can’t imagine why you’d want to. If you’re looking for an aggressive trail ride and you can afford this bike, buy it.

BEST 29” FULL SUSPENSION FOR ALL-AROUND VALUE

Intense has a reputation for building lavishly appointed high-end bikes, but this build breaks that mold. It’s by no means a cheap mountain bike, but considering the pedigree and the quality of the components, it offers real value for money. This is a full on 29” trail machine ready to take on anything from cross country races to technical trails, coming in at a very respectable 26 lbs. 4 oz. for the medium size. That makes it a legitimate high-end bicycle at a mid-end price!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MOUNTAIN BIKE

COST

Mountain bikes are available in a huge range of prices: the most expensive bike on this list costs 10 times the price of the cheapest! You do get what you pay for but in many cases, you may not be gaining an advantage you’ll notice. It’s worth studying bikes, talking to other riders, and looking at the terrain you will ride to decide what will make a difference to you and where you’ll find the best value.

BIKE TYPES

Most manufacturers classify bikes in these rough categories.

CROSS-COUNTRY OR XC:

These bikes are designed for smooth, flowing trails. They typically have narrow tires and steep geometry and are designed for climbing and speed on the flats. Cross-country race bikes tend to be extremely light.

TRAIL:

These bikes are the widest category and are designed for versatility, aimed at delivering fun, capable rides over everything from smooth XC trails to steep, rough, technically challenging terrain. Trail bikes can handle limited jumps and drops.

ENDURO OR ALL MOUNTAIN:

Bikes are made to range from the rough end of the trail spectrum into more aggressive bike park-style riding, with bigger jumps and drops and very steep descents. They have to be able to climb as well as descend.

FREERIDE:

Bikes made for huge jumps and drops and place a low priority on climbing.

DOWNHILL:

Bikes made for high-speed racing on defined high-gradient courses.

FRAME MATERIALS

ALUMINUM:

The most common frame material. It’s light, strong, and easy to work with, and is used for everything from entry-level to high-end bikes.

CARBON FIBER:

Very light and very strong and primarily used in high-end bikes.

STEEL:

Steel is very strong and allows the use of narrow tubes, and is popular for hardtail and rigid bikes.

WHEELS

29″ WHEELS:

29″ wheels take some effort to get rolling, but once moving they hold speed and encourage more speed. They are better at rolling over obstacles than dodging around them. Cross-country bikes and bikes straddling the cross-country/trail boundary tend to use 29” wheels.

27.5” WHEELS:

27.5” wheels are more agile and better for tight, technical terrain that requires fast maneuvering. Bikes straddling the trail-enduro boundary are typically built around 27.5” wheels.

PLUS-SIZED TIRES:

Plus sized tires can be used on either wheel size but are more common on 27.5” wheels. Plus-size tires are larger than normal tires and can be run at lower pressures. They absorb shock and grip the trail, but add weight and drag.

TUBELESS TIRES:

Tubeless Tires use a sealant to control flats and eliminate inner tubes. They are light and can be run at lower pressures for greater grip on rough terrain.

SUSPENSION

Most mountain bikes use mechanical shock absorbers in the front fork (the part that connects the frame to the front wheel), the rear frame, or both. Suspension smooths out the ride and allows greater comfort and control on rough terrain. It can also “bob” on climbs or flat ground, converting your pedaling force to up-and-down motion instead of forward motion and slowing you down. Modern bikes use all kinds of engineering ingenuity to control bob.

RIGID:

Rigid bikes have no suspension and often rely on large tires to absorb shock.

HARDTAIL

Hardtail bikes have suspension on the front fork only.

FULL SUSPENSION:

Full suspension bikes have front and rear suspension.

GEOMETRY

Books have been written on mountain bike geometry, but here’s a very quick explanation:

STEEP GEOMETRY:

Steep geometry uses an upright seat tube and places the hub of the front wheel almost under the handlebars. This configuration gives speed and control on climbs but on steep downhills can easily pitch the rider over the bars. Cross-country bikes use steeper geometry.

SLACK GEOMETRY:

Slack Geometry angles the seat tube back and puts the front wheel farther ahead of the handlebars for control on descents. Bikes designed for use on steep descents and aggressive trails use slacker geometry.

PRO TIP

If you order a bike online, have it assembled and tuned by a qualified bike mechanic. It’s worth the price: your bike will work better and many manufacturers will void your warranty if your bike is not professionally assembled.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DRIVETRAIN

A mountain bike’s drivetrain involves a number of components.

  • Shifters are mounted on the handlebar and control gear shifting.
  • The crankset holds the pedals, which allow your legs to deliver force to the drivetrain.
  • The chain transfers power from the crank to the rear wheel.
  • Derailleurs move the chain from one gear to another.
  • The cassette or cogset is the group of rings mounted on the rear wheel. Larger rings are used for climbing.

Most modern mountain bikes have a single front ring and no front shifter, with 10 to 12 rings in the back. Some bikes still use front and rear shifters and derailleurs and multiple front chainrings.

Shimano and SRAM are the dominant drivetrain manufacturers. Many frame manufacturers identify their bike builds by the drivetrain parts used. For example, if you see “XT” in a built bike’s name it probably uses Shimano’s XT drivetrain. If you see “GX Eagle” it uses the SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain.

SEATPOST

Mountain bikers raise their seats for stability and power when climbing, and lower them to allow free body movement when descending.

  • Fixed Seatposts require the rider to dismount and adjust the seatpost manually before climbing or ascending.
  • Dropper Seatposts raise and lower the seat automatically through a control button on the handlebar.

If you ride rolling terrain with many transitions between climbing and ascending, a dropper post is a big plus.

BRAKES

Hydraulic disc brakes are preferred and are standard even on many entry level mountain bikes.

Brake rotors come in a number of sizes, usually 160mm, 180mm, and 200mm. Larger rotors deliver more stopping power. Many bikes use larger rotors on the front.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A WOMEN’S MOUNTAIN BIKE

Women’s mountain bikes are often equipped with features that are more ergonomically suited to women. These features include narrower handlebars, women’s-specific saddle, and even different frame geometry. These features all ensure that women have ultimate confidence and control when shredding on their mountain bikes.

Along with the women’s-specific geometry and features, mountain bikes are also designed for different styles of riding. So take into account what and where you plan on riding to ensure you select a bike that is fit for your intended purpose. This will not only be safer, but will also ensure that you have a lot more fun on the trails.

RIDING STYLE

FAMILY FUN:

This style of riding is about heading outdoors with the family to spend time together and perhaps even get fit while doing it. It’s not about tackling technical or challenging terrain but is more for riding casually through wide open spaces and enjoying the great outdoors. A low-cost hardtail mountain bike suits this style of riding.

TRAIL RIDING:

This style of riding is less technical, and it includes gravel roads and wide open trails. The climbs and descents are typically easier and not so steep for casual trail riding. A hardtail – front suspension only – mountain bike is appropriate for this style of riding.

CROSS COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING:

X-Country biking includes more technical and challenging riding. Riding cross country usually entails steeper climbs and descents, narrower trails (also known as singletrack) and more technical trails. There will be more rocks, tree roots, and tricky terrain to navigate. This style of riding focuses as much on the climbing as the descending, so a hardtail or a light full suspension bike will be a good choice.

ALL MOUNTAIN OR ENDURO:

Although sometimes all mountain and Enduro trails are wider, they also tend to be rougher and are no less technical than cross country trails. The focus is on steep and gnarly descents with only moderate to slightly steep climbing. This style is about riding downhill at speed. Full suspension mountain bikes are best suited for the Enduro style of riding and are often a touch heavier than a cross country full suspension bike.

DOWNHILL:

This style of riding is all about super technical and rough trails. It often includes large rock sections, tight downhill corners, human-made jumps, and loose surfaces. There is only one focus in downhill riding – to go downhill as fast as possible. Uphills are typically ascended by car or ski lift to the top of the mountain. Downhill mountain biking requires a heavy duty full suspension bike. When searching for a downhill bike, the emphasis should be on strength rather than weight. You’ll want a durable and robust bike for downhill riding, even if it is slightly heavier than other models on the market. A stronger bike will be better equipped to handle the beating it gets while railing downhill.

HARDTAIL VS FULL SUSPENSION

As explained above, the type of suspension you choose will depend on the style of riding you plan on doing. Knowing your local trail networks and where you plan to ride will also help you to select a bike that will be appropriate for you.

Less technical terrain with lots of climbing will require a lighter bike, like a hardtail mountain bike (which only includes front suspension). Rough and gnarly terrain, on the other hand, should be conquered with a full suspension mountain bike which includes both front and rear suspension.

Read more about hardtails vs full suspension here.

COST

The materials, components, and style of bike will all play a role in the price point of a mountain bike. Prices can vary wildly. However, you want to make sure you are purchasing a safe and reliable bike, so look for a mountain bike from a reputable brand. All the women-specific bikes listed in this article are from industry leaders and respected mountain bike brands so you can feel good about your decision if you buy a bike from the list above.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HARDTAIL

Hardtail bikes have suspension at the front of the bike only. They are most suited to trail riding and cross country mountain biking. A hardtail bike will help you roll over small bumps and uneven terrain, but won’t smooth out very rugged trails.

TRAVEL

“Travel” refers to how far the suspension will travel while you ride; if a mountain bike has 130mm of travel, then the suspension will compress 130mm. The more travel suspension, the plusher the ride will feel and the more suited the bike is for rough terrain. Read more about how much travel you need for your style of riding here.

FULL SUSPENSION

A full suspension mountain bike has suspension at the front and rear of the bike. The amount of travel (see above) the bike has will determine the style of riding it is suitable for. A full suspension bike is best suited to All Mountain, Enduro and Downhill riding styles.

WHEEL SIZE

26”, 27.5”and 29” refers to the diameter of the wheels. These are the three most common sizes for mountain bikes. Modern mountain bikes will often match the size of the bike to the size of the wheel. For example, an XS or small bike may be equipped with a 26” or 27.5” wheel, which suits a smaller rider, whereas larger sized bikes will have a 29” wheel. The difference in wheel size gives the rider the best experience for their particular body size and riding style.

FRAME

The frame comprises the main part of the bike, and is usually made from either aluminum or carbon. Frames are designed for specific riding styles and will vary in terms of geometry and ergonomics. Find out more about the differences between aluminum and carbon mountain bike frames here.

DISC BRAKES

These are a style of brake. Most modern mountain bikes are equipped with disc brakes as they offer quick and even stopping power. The caliper – which works like a clamp – grips the metal rotor on the wheel to bring the bike to a quick stop.

RIM BRAKES

These are a style of brake. Similarly to a disc brake, a rim brake is also like a clamp, but instead of clamping to a metal rotor, it clamps to the wheel. The stopping force is not as great on rim brakes as disc, but they are suitable for mountain bikes that are used on relatively flat trails that don’t require significant stopping power.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SURF SHORTS

UPF RATING

When choosing the best surf shorts, protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation should be a serious consideration. The UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, of a particular piece of clothing is rated on a scale of 15 – 50. I realize that sounds like an odd rating system, but it’ll make sense in a moment.

The way UPF rating is measured is by a ratio of how many UV rays that a piece of clothing will allow to pass through. The higher the number, the better the protection.

For example, a UPF rating of 20 will allow 1 out of 20 (1:20) UV rays to reach your skin. Another way of conceptualizing this is by thinking about the percentage rate of UV rays blocked. So, a UPF rating of 20 will block 95% of damaging UV radiation.

UPF RATINGS:

  • Excellent: 40-50
  • Very Good: 25-35
  • Good: 15-20

So why is 15 the lowest rating? I’m glad you asked! Anything below this number isn’t advertised because it doesn’t actually provide any substantial protection. To draw a comparison, 100% cotton garments only block 1 out of every 5 rays (UPF 5).

QUICK DRYING

Some of the surf shorts on our list are treated with a durable water repellent (DWR). This allows water to roll off the fabric instead of soaking into it, making dry times much quicker than untreated fabrics. DWR treatment is more of a luxury than a necessity, but it’s definitely nice to have your shorts dry by the time you’re finished loading your surf gear into your car.

MOISTURE-WICKING FABRICS

Fabrics that wick moisture are able to pull sweat/water away from skin, keeping you drier. This means that you have less of a chance to develop a rash from chafing skin. An added bonus is that moisture-wicking fabrics help you stay cooler as the water being drawn from skin pulls heat away from your body.

If you’re going to be surfing in hotter climates or for a prolonged period in warm areas, look for garments that are moisture-wicking to help keep you cool and safe.

4-WAY STRETCH

This is an awesome technology that has been used increasingly in watersports apparel as well as other outdoor/active gear. Essentially, 4-Way Stretch is a fabric’s ability to stretch, both width and length wise, and then return to its original shape.

Reviews - The Best Big Guy Mountain Bikes

Ibis DV9

Specs
  • Frame Material: Carbon Fiber
  • Wheel Size: 29”
  • Brake Type: Hydraulic Disc
  • Number of Gears: 1x11
  • Suspension: Hardtail (With Front Suspension)
Features
  • High-End Components
  • Wide Gear Range
  • Burly Suspension Fork
  • High Strength With Low Weight

BEST FOR: ALL-AROUND TRAIL RIDING

Ibis builds some of the world’s strongest carbon frames, and this is a prime choice for riders looking for a relatively lightweight package that can handle serious loads. This build is loaded with quality components and features a versatile design that will rule anything from smooth cross country to high impact trail riding. The DV9 uses 29” wheels, ideal for long rides over smooth terrain and for rolling over obstacles on rougher trails.

Low to mid-end suspension forks are often a pain point for larger riders, as they tend to flex and perform poorly under heavier loads. The DV9 carries a high quality heavy-duty fork that can stand up to big hits. This bike is ready for high-impact riding and has the strength to carry a full-sized rider.

Marin Pine Mountain

Specs
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Wheel Size: 27.5”+
  • Brake Type: Hydraulic Disc
  • Number of Gears: 1x10
  • Suspension: Rigid
Features
  • Fender And Rack Mounts
  • Tubeless-Ready Wheels
  • Plus-Sized Tires (For Extra Shock Absorption)

BEST FOR: SMOOTH TRAILS

The Marin Pine Mountain is a classically styled bike mating a rugged steel frame and fork with ride-cushioning plus-sized tires. If you’re looking for a basic, simple ride, this is a top contender at a very reasonable price point.

To get the most out of the Pine Mountain, use it as it’s made to be used. The big tires and the spring of the steel frame will absorb some shocks, but it’s still a rigid bike and if you ride hard over rough terrain, you’ll feel bumps and you’ll need skills to stay in control. Ride on flowing cross-country trails and you’ll have an affordable, sturdy, bike that handles well and looks elegant in any company.

Kona Process 153

Specs
  • Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Wheel Size: 27.5”
  • Brake Type: Hydraulic Disc
  • Number of Gears: 1x11
  • Suspension: Full Suspension
Features
  • Full Suspension For A Smooth Ride
  • Heavy Duty Wheelset
  • 12mm Rear Axle For Added Stiffness

BEST FOR: RIDERS WHO WANT FULL SUSPENSION

Here’s some bad news: big riders place big demands on rear suspension, and if you want a full suspension bike you’ll need to look at high-quality frames with solid, highly tunable suspension systems.

Here’s some good news: you don’t have to sink your budget to get a great full suspension bike! This Kona Process may be the priciest item on this list, but by full-suspension mountain bike standards, it’s a fantastic deal for a versatile ride. Kona makes bombproof bikes, and this build features a solid fork and a sturdy wheelset that will stand up to real abuse, important features for larger riders. If you’re ordering online, tell the shop what you weigh; most dealers will set the suspension up for you.

Mongoose Dolomite Fat Tire

Specs
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Wheel Size: 26” Fat Bike
  • Brake Type: Mechanical Disc
  • Number of Gears: 1x7
  • Suspension: Rigid
Features
  • Headset Adjusts For Riders Of Different Heights
  • Most Components Can Be Upgraded (Your Bike Can Grow With You)
  • Grip Shifters For Easy Shifting

BEST FOR: BIG GUYS ON SMALL BUDGETS

Fat bikes rely on huge tires to soak up bumps. That lets manufacturers cut out expensive suspension, making the fat bike a great way to get on the trail without spending too much. The Mongoose Dolomite packs a lot of value into a low-cost package and gets rave reviews from many riders of 300 pounds and above.

The Dolomite earns a high rating because it provides value for money. It’s still an entry-level bike, and you shouldn’t expect too much. There are plenty of plastic parts and you won’t find high-end components here. The gear range is limited, which can make climbing a challenge. It’s a great choice if price is a major issue, but if you want a high-performance ride, you’ll need to spend more.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BIG MAN’S MOUNTAIN BIKE

FORKS

A mountain bike’s fork connects the frame to the front wheel. Most mountain bikes use a suspension fork to soak up bumps. All of our picks in the low to middle price range have rigid forks, without suspension. That’s because entry level suspension forks tend to flex under heavy loads, which wears the fork out and leaves the rider feeling unsteady, and forks with limited adjustments often can’t be set up to handle a larger rider. If your budget isn’t ready for a fork offering adjustability, high rigidity, and a through-axle, rigid forks are the better choice.

WHEELS

The wheelset is the limiting factor for large riders: if anything’s going to break, it’s going to be your rear wheel. If you’re breaking spokes or your wheels are going out of true (wobbling or twitching when you spin them), invest in a custom wheel build using downhill-specific spokes and rims. They’re made to take big hits and can stand up to big riders.

Online bike shops like JensonUSA have bike experts standing by to help customers and can swap out components if needed. Take advantage of this service! Tell them you are above average weight and ask if the wheelset will be strong enough. They will recommend a stronger wheelset if they think it’s necessary. Your bike may get a bit heavier but you’ll be more secure on the trail.

YOU’RE NOT TOO HEAVY

Most of the bikes on this list are rated for riders up to 300 pounds. Bike makers are conservative and many bikes will carry heavier riders, especially if your riding style is not aggressive. If you’re over this weight, don’t give up! A good bike shop can build you a bike to fit your weight. If you’re at the high end of heavy look to Zize Bikes, which builds bikes for riders up to 550 pounds!

PRO TIP

If your bike arrives partially assembled, have a qualified mechanic finish the assembly and tune the bike. It’s worth the cost: your bike will feel better and last longer, and many manufacturers will void your warranty without professional assembly.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

WHEEL TYPES

Mountain bike wheels come in multiple sizes and types. For a full explanation of wheel sizes and their uses, see this article from Bike Radar.

  • FAT BIKES use 26” diameter wheels and very large (3.7 to 5+ inches wide) tires.
  • PLUS BIKES use 27.5” or 29” diameter wheels and large (2.8 to 3.7 inches wide) tires.
  • STANDARD BIKES use 27.5” or 29” diameter wheels and 1.9 to 2.8-inch tires.

SUSPENSION

Many mountain bikes use mechanical shock absorbers on the front fork, on the frame, or both. These devices soak up bumps and give you a smoother ride. If rear suspension systems are not made or tuned efficiently, they can “bob”, converting your pedaling into up and down movement instead of forward movement. This makes pedaling harder.

  • RIGID BIKES have no suspension and usually rely on large tires to absorb impact.
  • HARDTAIL BIKES have a front suspension fork.
  • FULL SUSPENSION BIKES have front and rear suspension.
  • THROUGH-AXLE FORKS support the wheel with a rigid axle.

BRAKES

  • MECHANICAL DISC BRAKES provide reliable stopping power at low cost.
  • HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKES provide great stopping power with minimal effort.

GEARS

Mountain bike gears are described by the number of front chainrings x the number of rings in the rear cassette. 1×11 means a single chainring in front and an 11-ring cassette in back.

A wider gear range gives you more gear options for easier climbing. Most high-end bikes use 1×11 or 1×12 systems, but multiple front rings were standard for many years and can still do the job!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A KIDS MOUNTAIN BIKE

Kids bikes come in a variety of sizes and styles. It is important to ensure you have selected a bike that fits your child and is suitable for the type of riding they will be doing. This is important for safety as well as maintenance and repairs.

SIZE

It’s really important that you buy the right size bike for your child. It may be tempting to purchase a bike they can “grow into,” however, a bike that is too big will often cause your child to lose confidence in their riding ability.

Read more about choosing the right size bike for your child here.

WHEEL SIZE

The wheel size indicates the size of a kids bike up to a 24” wheel. For example, a bike that has a 24” wheel is only one size.

Once a bike has a 26” wheel and above, it fits into the adult bike category, where the size of the frame makes all the difference. For example, you can purchase a bike with a 26” wheel in XS – XL. However, a tall child or young teenager will probably be best suited to an adult sized bike.

PRICE

There can be huge price differences in bike prices. These can come down to components, the weight of the bike, and purpose of the bike. Ensure you understand where and how the bike will be used so you’re not over or under spending on a bike for your child.

Purchasing a very expensive high end bike that will only be ridden on bike paths is not necessary. Shoot low for a casual rider or a kid who’s just starting to launch onto the mountain biking scene.

On the flip side, purchasing a very cheap bike to take on rugged trails will have you doing a lot of maintenance work and perhaps even spending more money on replacing parts. If you know your kid is a rugged rider and will continue mountain biking for years to come, make sure to invest in a quality bike with a slightly higher price tag.

SAFETY

When purchasing any bike, it is important to ensure it is fit for the purpose you plan on using it for. A lower spec bike at a cheaper price point is fine for riding around the park and on footpaths, but it may not suit full blown mountain biking trails. Make sure to do your research and find out exactly what your kid wants to do with their bike before making your final decision about which bike to purchase.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

RIGID

This bike has no suspension.

SUSPENSION

This is the system used to make uneven terrain feel smoother. It is at the front of the bicycle that attaches the frame to the wheel. On full suspension bikes, there is also suspension at the rear of the bike. The suspension is a metal shaft that compresses into itself with the use of a spring.

FRONT SUSPENSION

This bike has suspension at the front of the bike, which will help to smooth out the ride.

FULL SUSPENSION

This has suspension at the front and rear of the bike that is suited to rough mountain biking trails.

WHEEL SIZE

Refers to the diameter of the wheels. A childs’ bike is sized by the wheels, unlike an adult bike which is sized by the frame.

FRAME

This is the main part of the bike. All of the bikes reviewed in this article have an aluminium frame. Each bike brand has different frame designs and colors to select from.

DISC BRAKES

These are a style of brake. A caliper, that works like a clamp, tightens around a metal rotor to bring you to a quick and even stop.

A disc brake is good for serious mountain biking as it will stop quickly. They are great for kids as often their reaction times are slower and they tend to require faster braking times than adults.

RIM BRAKES

These are a style of brakes. A caliper that works like a clamp tightens around the wheel. Rim brakes offer a softer braking capacity than a disc brake.

Rim brakes work well for smooth and even terrain, such as bike paths, wooded trails and grassy surfaces. The need to brake sharply is often minimised on this terrain, meaning rim brakes are suitable.

Read more about the difference between disc brakes and rim brakes and what it means for kids here.

GRIP SHIFT

This is a style of changing the gears, commonly found on small kids bikes. It is a twistable rubber piece that is part of the hand grip. The grip shift will have numbers on it to indicate the gear you have selected.

You simply twist the hand grip backwards or forwards to change gears. It is very simple and uncomplicated, which makes it perfect for young children to start learning about gear changing.

THUMB SHIFT

This is a small lever beside the hand grips on the handlebars that you click with your thumb to change gears. It is commonly found on older kid and adult bikes. It is not complicated to use, however it is not as simple for small kids to understand.

KICKSTAND

A metal rod with a pivoting bolt that is attached to the bike. With your hand or foot, simply twist it towards the ground and it will hold your bike upright so you can walk away without worrying about it tipping over. It is used to park your bike without needing to lean it against a tree or fence.
