THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING LIFE JACKETS

CLASSIFICATION

Personal Flotation Devices (or PFD’s) are classified into 5 Types, all of which are meant to be worn at all times and come in buoyant, inflatable, and hybrid designs except for Type IV.

Type I

Best For: Remote Waters

Type I PFD’s have the most buoyancy of their kind and are able to turn an unconscious paddler face-up.

Type II

Best For: Calm Waters

Type II PFD’s are very basic and intended where rescue would be quick. They’re simpler and less comfortable versions of Type III.

Type III

Best For: Quick Rescues

Type III PFD’s are more advanced versions of Type II, in that they are best when rescues would be quick. They offer much more mobility and give wearers the ability to turn themselves face up to aid in their own rescue.

Type IV

Best For: Backup

Type IV PFD’s are meant as a backup and are not worn. They are typically thrown from a boat or vessel to assist provide extra assistance to the victim during a rescue.

Type V

Best For: Specific Activities

Type V PFD’s are highly specialized and are made to work best for a certain activity, such as kayaking, windsurfing, etc.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Pockets

Pockets are a key consideration when choosing a PFD as they help you hold on-the-water essentials and organize your gear for quick and easy retrieval.

Color / Reflective Elements

Many PFD’s are offered in bright colors to improve your visibility to rescuers and some offer reflective trim that helps in low-light situations, such as dawn, dusk, and fog.

Lash Tab

A lash tab is able to have a rescue or utility knife attached to it. Fishers keep utility knives on them to assist them when fishing. However, it’s a good idea for all paddlers to have a knife for potentially unforeseeable circumstances like being caught underwater by netting or rope.

Boardworks Versa

BEST OVERALL SUP

If you’re looking for an all-around SUP the whole family is sure to enjoy, the Versa is worth your consideration.

This recreational paddle board is wide and stable, offering a smooth, stable ride. The honey fomb heat embossed deck is equally grippy and comfortable to stand on and there are four front D-rings tie-downs with bungees for stashing your gear. It includes a lockable ergonomic carry handle as well as a detachable fin.

What I like most about this SUP is the bamboo grain finish, which gives the board a very attractive look.

TAHE Beach Cross

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 10'
  • Weight: 32 lbs
  • Width: 33"
  • Max Load: 220 lbs
Features
  • Lightweight TOUGH-TEC construction ensures lasting durability
  • Keeled nose shape provides efficient straight-line tracking
  • Plush EVA center deck pad
  • Integrated water bottle holder
TAHE Beach Cross

BEST FOR: PADDLERS ON A BUDGET

When you need a high quality board but you don’t have a ton to spend, the $700 Beach Cross may be exactly what you’re looking for.

TAHE designed the Beach Cross as a hybrid-style paddle board, meaning it features a keeled nose for tracking and performance and a full waterline for speed and efficiency. The rail to rail volume provides for excellent stability when you’re out on the water and there are numerous attachment points and deck rigging for securing your accessories.

What I like most about the TAHE Beach Cross is how it performs equally well for yoga as it does for a long recreational day out on the lake.

Starboard Generation

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 12' 6"
  • Weight: 29 lbs
  • Width: 28"
  • Max Load: 220 lbs
Features
  • Pine on the standing area offers extra impact resistance and rigidity
  • Flat deck with recessed pad offers comfort and stability
  • Deep double concave supports the round Vee nose with stability directly underfoot
  • For every board sold, Starboard plants a mangrove tree in the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park, absorbing 1 ton of CO2 over 20 years
Starboard Generation

BEST FOR: LONG DISTANCE TOURING ADVENTURES

The Generation is a very stable and rigid kayak thanks to the unidirectional stringer bands and reinforcements at the rails and nose. The nose is designed to lift the board up on the water and allow you to accelerate faster while the nose kick prevents you from diving into the surf downwind and elevating you above the chop upwind. The Generation is equipped with a bungee tie-down in the front of the board for stashing supplies.

What I like most about this stand-up paddle board is how much the company is dedicated to giving back to the environment. For every board sold, Starboard plants a mangrove tree in the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park and participates in a plastic offset program.

Bote Breeze Gator Shell

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 10' 6"
  • Weight: 28 lbs
  • Width: 32"
  • Max Load: 220 lbs
Features
  • Includes a 2-piece adjustable paddle with fiberglass shaft
  • BVA textured deck pad is heat sealed to shed water
  • Adjustable bungee straps provide quick, easy storage of extra gear
Bote Breeze Gator Shell

BEST FOR: SUP FISHING

If you’re in need of a versatile paddle board suitable for fishing — anglers, be sure to check out the Gator Shell.

Bote constructed the Gator Shell with a flat, wide planing hull, making it a suitable choice for fishing endeavors. The heat-sealed textured deck pad sheds water and provides for nonslip traction. There are tie-downs and bungees straps for securing gear and essentials. It’s comfortable to carry thanks to the ergonomic grab handle, and although not included, this board is compatible with the Traveling SUP carry system sling, which allows for hands-free transport.

What I like most about this board is that it comes with a 2-piece adjustable paddle with a fiberglass shaft.

Surftech Bark + prAna Catalyst Tuflite V-Tech

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 11' 2"

  • Width: 32.5"
  • Max Load: 215 lbs
Features
  • Made using renewable materials and advancements in chemistry
  • Single fin box; fin included
  • Wide square tail and soft rails help provide stability
  • Ledge-style handle
Surftech Bark + prAna Catalyst Tuflite V-Tech

BEST FOR: SUP SURFING

When you’re seeking a superior combination of speed, glide, and performance out on the ocean, look to the Tuflite V-Tech to carry you through the waves.

The Surftech features a displacement-to-plane hull that provides for a balanced combination of glide and speed while the wide square tail and soft rails provide for stability. This board is a verified Level One product by the ECOBOARD Project, which means the SUP is constructed from renewable materials. For example, the deck pad foam — which is made using 20 percent algae biomass.

What I like most about the Catalyst V-Tech is how maneuverable it is out in the surf.

Boardworks Flow

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 9’ 11”
  • Weight: 30 lbs
  • Width: 33”
  • Max Load: 270 lbs
Features
  • Includes A High Quality Single Fin (to keep you paddling in a straight line)
  • Easy Carry Handle Pops Up When Needed
  • Strong Bamboo Outer Layer Provides Long Lasting Durability

BEST FOR: YOGA

If you’re looking for a new way to take your warrior pose to the next level, the Boardworks Flow is your best bet! Balance and weight distribution were specifically considered when this SUP was designed, making it the ideal board for a morning yoga sesh.

A hefty 33” wide and able to support 270 lbs., the Flow provides ample room for balance poses and strength poses alike. It also sports a full length foam deck pad to provide cushioning and act as your aquatic yoga mat. In all, this is a fantastic board for all types of beginners, even those new to yoga or stand up paddleboarding!

Hala Radito

Specs
  • Construction: Inflatable
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 10’
  • Weight: 31 lbs
  • Width: 34”
  • Max Load: 350 lbs
Features
  • Includes A Backpack Carrying Case
  • Diamond Grooved Deck Pad For Better Traction
  • Rear “Stomp Pad” Increases Precision When Making Tight Maneuvers

BEST FOR: WHITEWATER

For those who want to surf but lack a coastline, I have great news: you can surf in rivers with up to Class III rapids! But don’t go using a solid construction SUP – you’re going to need an inflatable to tackle this challenge and there’s no better inflatable stand up paddle board for whitewater surfing than the Hala Radito.

When rocks would otherwise bash a well constructed solid SUP, the Hala Radito is the perfect little monster that can take a licking and keep on ticking, er, paddling. Measuring in at just 10’ feet, this is one of the smaller boards on our list, lending itself to greater maneuverability on the river.

Perhaps the coolest feature of this board is it’s retractable center fin that pushes back and out of the way when it comes into contact with shallow rocks. This ensures you have a smooth ride and keeps your mind at ease without worrying about breaking a traditionally styled immovable fin.

Hobie Mirage Eclipse ACX

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 12’
  • Weight: 59 lbs
  • Width: 35”
  • Max Load: 275 lbs
Features
  • Comes In 2 Different Colors
  • Super Wide Design Increases Stability
  • Rear Cargo Bungees For Stowing Gear

BEST FOR: “PEDAL” BOARDING

The paddling purist in me was reluctant to add this board to the list since it doesn’t actually require a paddle. However, I realized that it’s actually genius because you get to use your legs, the body’s largest and most efficient muscle group. This opens up “paddle boarding” to an entire group of people who may not have otherwise engaged in the sport!

Looking as though MacGyver married a scooter to an elliptical and then Frankensteined it to a paddle board, the Hobie Mirage Eclipse ACX is surprisingly nimble and incredibly fast! The peddle fins sweep back and forth like the fins on a fish, making this board glide in a variety of conditions. The fins also fold flat when navigating shallow water or landing on the beach.

If you’re someone who wants to enjoy the water simply and have loads of fun, then do yourself a favor and snag this pedal board!

Pau Hana Big EZ Angler

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Planing
  • Length: 11’
  • Weight: 36 lbs
  • Width: 36”
  • Max Load: 275 - 365 lbs
Features
  • Fish Finder Can Be Mounted Via Through-Hole
  • Extremely Durable Deck Made From Teak Wood
  • Planing Hull Increases Maneuverability Without Disturbing Fish

BEST FOR: FISHING

Pau Hana is one of the biggest names in aquatic boardsports and it’s no wonder that 3 of their stand up paddle boards made our list! The Big EZ Angler might be the greatest fishing SUP we’ve seen yet.

What immediately stands out on this board are the 25 SeaMount attachment points which let you completely customize your vessel. No two Big EZ Anglers should ever look the same as there are nearly limitless options to add gear attachments, strap in coolers, position fishing rod holders, anchor bait and tackle, secure your beverage, and fasten your paddle.

The high weight capacity of this board also allows you to load it up with everything you need to reel in your next catch. Beginners may want to stick to the 275 lb weight limit while advanced paddlers can push the 365 lb max.

Pau Hana Endurance

Specs
  • Construction: Solid
  • Hull Shape: Displacement
  • Length: 12’
  • Weight: 31 lbs
  • Width: 30”
  • Max Load: 271 lbs
Features
  • Comfortable Foam Deck
  • Recessed Handle For Easy Carrying
  • Comes With A 9” Fin For Increased Tracking

BEST FOR: OVERNIGHT TOURING / MULTI-DAY TRIPS

If you’re the adventurous type that’s bound to spend an entire weekend in the great outdoors, then you’re going to need a heavy hauler able to carry multiple days worth of supplies. Named after explorer Ernest Shackleton’s famous trans-Antarctic attempt, the Pau Hana Endurance is just the vessel for such adventures!

Able to easily handle 90+ lbs of gear, the Endurance paddles almost effortlessly on long trips. It’s also loaded with 20 SeaMount anchor points, giving you the opportunity and flexibility to customize your gear stowing system to best fit your needs.

Last but not least, the hull (the underside of the board) is made from reinforced fiberglass that protects the board from rocks, logs, and other obstacles that would otherwise damage inferior boards.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING PADDLE BOARDS

CONSTRUCTION

All paddle boards are either going to be an inflatable or a solid construction. They both have their benefits and it all depends on your needs.

INFLATABLE

  • Tend to be less expensive
  • Great choice when storage and transportation options are limited
  • Comes with a carrying case for easy travel
  • More forgiving if dropped or rammed into rocks on whitewater rivers

SOLID

  • Offers different hull types for specializing in different activities
  • Better center of gravity increases stability
  • Sits lower in the water offering streamlined performance and more efficient paddling
  • Usually the preferred choice for stand up paddle boarding when storage and transportation abilities permit

HULL TYPE

When choosing a stand up paddle board with specific use in mind, it’s important to pay attention to what type of hull it has. The hull is the underside of a watercraft and comes in two designs.

PLANING HULL

Planing hulls are ideal for activities such as surfing, yoga, and whitewater. Their flat underside makes them easy to turn but sacrifices speed. These are the de facto hull found on inflatables.

DISPLACEMENT HULL

Displacement hulls are best for fishing and touring (long treks). As the name indicates, this type of hull displaces water by pushing it around the underside of the paddle board and vastly increases the board’s ability to track straight. It also enhances speed and creates paddle efficiency, generating more distance with each stroke.

LENGTH

When determining how long of a stand up paddle board you should buy, take into consideration what type of activity you’ll be doing the most.

UP TO TEN FEET

  • Yoga
  • Surfing
  • Children’s SUP

TEN TO TWELVE FEET

  • Yoga
  • Fishing
  • Whitewater
  • Recreational Use

TWELVE FEET AND LONGER

  • Touring
  • Racing
  • Overnight Trips

WIDTH

The average size stand up paddle board measures in at 32”. Wider SUPs will lend themselves better to beginners with little experience and to larger framed paddlers. Anglers who need more stability when reeling the big catch will also likely prefer a wider base beneath them.

Paddlers who have touring in mind and need speed while covering large distances will want to find a board that doesn’t exceed the 32” standard. Also, those looking to surf with their SUP may prefer a narrower board to perform maneuvers in waves.

WEIGHT CAPACITY

The maximum weight capacity listed for each board is generally given as a guideline, but can be flexed depending on the paddler’s skill and what they’re bringing aboard.

Paddlers with little experience will want to respect the max weight and not exceed it, otherwise the board may be too difficult to paddle. However, those with more experience can push the limit, especially on touring SUPs when a weight range is listed.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

EPS

Stands for extruded polystyrene, which is a lightweight, buoyant, and waterproof material.

EVA

Stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate material, which offers padding and shock absorption.

DECK

The area of the board where the paddler stands.

HULL

The bottom, or underside, of the paddle board.

ABS

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – a type of hard, very durable plastic.

VOLUME

A measure of buoyancy, or how well a board will float in the water. The higher the volume, the better it will float.

FIN

Like the fin on a shark, a fin on a paddle board is mounted to the underside near the rear of the board to provide directional stability and control when steering the board.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A TOURING PADDLE BOARD

PRICE

The features your board comes with and what it’s made out of factor into the cost of your new toy. Decide which features are most important to you and also consider how much you want to spend to try your new sport. Many beginners prefer to experiment on less expensive models before investing a greater deal of money into more expensive boards.

STABILITY

Touring boards tend to be a little less stable than SUPs for yoga or recreational boards because of their design. However, some touring boards offer more stability than others. If you want to tour hard and fast, less stable models usually travel faster. If you have stability issues, look for wider, more tapered models to help you find your footing.

WEIGHT

Paddle boards have to be carried by hand from the shore to the water, so the weight of the board itself is important to consider. Most of the boards in this list are under 30 lbs, which is pretty manageable for the average adult. But weight is worth considering if you have any carrying weight restrictions or concerns.

WEIGHT LIMIT

Every paddle board also has a suggested weight limit based on buoyancy. You need to make sure your weight plus the weight of your equipment or canine passengers fits within that suggested limit for the best ride.

TYPE

There are many advantages and disadvantages to consider when deciding between solid versus inflatable versions of stand up paddle boards. Inflatable versions are easier to store and transport but require some setup. Solid models won’t pop, but the most current inflatables are made of impact-resistant materials that are very difficult to puncture, so popping shouldn’t be an issue either way. In the end, whether you choose a solid or inflatable-type paddle board is up to your personal preferences and needs. For help on making your decision, you can learn how to choose the right stand up paddle board for you.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

RAILS

The rails refer to the sides of the board. While low rails are necessary for surfers who need to lean and cut through waves, raised rails make you feel more stable on a paddle board. The rails are also what absorb the most impact when you bump against rocks and logs.

TRACKING FIN

Tracking fins attach to the bottom of the board and help keep your paddle board aligned when you’re paddling straight. Fins are especially essential for inflatable boards to keep them from being pushed around in the wind.

DECK PAD

The deck pad is the layer of material on the top of the board, under your feet. Usually, the deck pad is textured and cushioned to help prevent slippery, achy feet. A hard, wet, slippery deck would make paddle boarding a nightmare without the anti-slip support.

DISPLACEMENT HULL

The hull refers to the shape of the bottom of the board. Most touring boats have displacement hulls, which refers to the pointed nose shape. The pointy shape cuts through water and allows for faster-paced paddling, meaning you don’t have to exert extra effort to move farther across the water. This is especially important if you plan to tour over a long distance so you don’t tire too quickly.

VENT PLUG

A vent plug is an opening on the board that allows air to flow through the layers of the board and balance out the air pressure. Changing altitude, air, and water temperatures impact each layer of the board differently. If pressure isn’t equalized, the board can warp, bubble, and buckle.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A PADDLE BOARD

COST

The cost range for paddle boards differs greatly depending on whether it’s a hard or inflatable board and which amenities it comes with. Solid paddle boards usually cost more than inflatable models and accessory packages (with paddles, fins, and pumps) cost more upfront but tend to cost less than if you purchased the items separately.

If you plan on practicing SUP yoga occasionally, you may want to choose a less expensive model. If you plan to use your board regularly, and for more than just yoga, it pays to invest in a little bit more upscale, versatile model.

WEIGHT

It’s important to pay attention to the weight of your paddle board because you’re going to have to carry it from land into the water and out again. Most models listed here are under 35 lbs, which is the size of a toddler or small dog. If you regularly lift your pups and kids (or press over 35 lbs in the gym), you should be good.

WEIGHT LIMIT

Your board’s weight limit indicates the max pressure it can withstand and still glide across the water. More experienced riders can go a little heavier than the listed weights, but beginners should stay under the weight limit. Consider how much you weigh and how much your intended passengers weigh, if you want to bring them, before choosing your board.

STYLE

Ladies are often influenced by the design of their boards before any other feature, so it’s important that you like the colors and style. The designs of the boards here tend to lean on the gender-neutral side, so the males in your life won’t be too embarrassed to ride them either.

USE

Think about whether you want to use your board only for yoga or for other activities as well. Every board in this article is appropriate for yoga, but some allow you to pursue other interests such as fishing and cruising too. Learn more about how to use your board for yoga.

STABILITY

When you’re doing yoga on the water, you want a board that lets you get into position without falling flat on your face. Extended widths, wider noses, and thicker bases tend to provide more stability for exercise. In addition, the amount of traction the deck pad provides determines how well you can hold your positions. For a more in-depth guide on how to choose a paddle board for yoga, click here.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DECK PAD

The material that lays over the top of the board is called the deck pad. Typically, the deck pad provides non-slip traction, even when wet, and helps prevent tired feet. Look for a little bit of padding and a lot of grip for your yoga practice.

TRACKING FINS

Tracking fins look like shark fins, and they typically slide onto the bottom of the board. Tracking fins help keep you pointed in the direction you want to go. Without fins, inflatable boards tend to get pushed wherever the wind blows them.

LEASH

A leash is a length of cord or strap that you attach to your ankle and the edge of the board. The leash keeps your board within your reach at all times, even if you happen to fall. Several of the boards above include a leash with purchase, but some don’t. You can shop for SUP leashes here.

ATTACHMENT POINT

Many paddleboards come with D-rings or attachment points you can clip your gear to. If you want to bring a wet bag, flotation device, tackle box, or cooler with you, you can strap them to your board at any one of these points. Some yogis like to bring a camera for Instagram-worthy moments or an anchor to stay in place, so you need to consider where to put all your cargo.

The GO Starlite’s impact resistant outer layer is constructed from PEFC-certified sustainably sourced Australian Pine, making it both beautiful and durable. You can’t mention surfing without including some reference to the sport’s Hawaiian origins. That said, we had to include this gorgeously styled board that looks just as good on display as it does carving waves. Designed in the spirit of play, Pau Hana is a Hawaiian phrase that roughly translates as “time after work,” lending a certain philosophical aspect to its all-around design.

Coming in as the shortest board on this list, the Oahu Woody strategically sports a 5-fin box, meaning you can completely customize it to your personal preference whether you need more tracking or better maneuverability. Check out our “Things to Consider” section below for more details on each fin setup. Last but not least, this board boasts the largest weight capacity (263 lbs.), meaning it’s an ideal choice for larger framed paddlers.

Bote Flood Gatorshell

Specs
  • Length: 12’
  • Weight: 38 lbs
  • Width: 32”
  • Max Load: 300 lbs
Features
  • On-Board Watertight Storage
  • Attachment Points For Fishing
  • Front And Rear Cargo Bungees
  • Board Comes In 3 Color Patterns
  • Includes: A Carbon Fiber Paddle

BEST FOR: VERSATILITY

Need a little variety in your water-based diet? The Bote Flood is an excellent choice for those wanting to warm up in the morning with a little surf and unwind in the evening by casting a line and keeping it “reel.” Puns aside, this crossover board doesn’t sacrifice quality for versatility.

Instead, Bote focuses first on creating one of the best paddle boards for surfing and then expands on that by ingeniously adding versatile attachment points to rig it up for a day filled with angling. Lastly, a 5-fin box allows each paddler to customize their board specifically for each activity.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING PADDLE BOARDS

COST

When looking for the best paddle boards for surfing, specialization comes into play. Specific board contouring leads to a minimum quality standard in the materials used. Although there are less expensive, and also more expensive, paddle boards that can be used for surfing, the selection that we have carefully curated represent the best paddle boards you can buy without breaking the bank.

The principle “you get what you pay for” applies here. All of the options mentioned here are made by reputable companies with long histories in the surfing and paddle boarding industry.

CONSTRUCTION

All paddle boards are either going to be an inflatable or a solid construction but when it comes to selecting the best paddle board for surfing, solid is the way to go. This is because solid boards tend to have a better center of gravity as they sit lower in the water and provide better maneuverability.

Solid boards for surfing are made from a variety of materials, some more expensive than others. A hard plastic outer shell is the least expensive but tends to be heavy and is not recommended for surfing.

Fiberglass and epoxy are most commonly used and are typically used in conjunction with one another. These are your best bet for a quality paddle board that doesn’t break the bank. Many of these types of constructions will also include a lightweight yet durable wooden exterior to help reinforce the board and are highly recommended.

Carbon fiber is a top of the line option that makes for a lighter and more durable board, but will cost vastly more.

HULL TYPE

When choosing the best paddle board for surfing, you’ll need a specific type of hull (the bottom of the board) to achieve the results you want.

A planing hull will be your best bet when surfing. What makes this design unique is its flat underside that helps you maneuver easily in waves. Planing hulls also tend to be wider than average, lending itself to great stability.

Steer clear of paddle boards with a displacement hulls when specializing in surfing. Although these are outstanding hulls with a host of benefits, leave them for the long distance treks.

FIN SETUP

There are four basic types of fin setups that paddle boards utilize for surfing and it depends on each individual as to what you may prefer. If your board allows the option to customize, we recommend buying some extra fins and playing with each setup to determine which feels best to you.

  • Single Fin – This classic style was the first available set up in the early days of surfing. It’s an ideal choice for generating speed in a straight line and for traction to hold that line.
  • Twin Fin – The Twin Fin setup is much faster than the original Single Fin design and provides more maneuverability in small to medium-sized waves. However, because there is no fin in the center of the board, this setup is more prone to “spinning out” and losing traction if taking a tight bottom turn in a bigger wave.
  • Thruster – Splashing onto the scene in the early 80’s, the Thruster setup utilizes one large fin in the middle with two smaller fins flanking the sides in an offset shape (like a triangle). It’s basically a Single/Twin combo, providing the best elements of each. This is by far the most popular setup in all of surfing due to its well rounded and balanced nature.
  • Quad – Hitting the scene more recently, the Quad setup is for those whose surfing style isn’t characterized by crazy moves. Instead, it focuses more on speed and power by doubling down on the Twin Fin design – two fins on either side of the board. It still maneuvers really well and is a great choice for larger framed surfers.

LENGTH

Standup paddle boards come in three ranges of lengths that contribute to the overall specific purpose of the board. When it comes to surfing with a SUP, the shorter length, the better. Boards between 8’ and 10’ long are ideal for advanced surfing. These boards are usually special order or typically found in local surf shops.

Medium length boards between 10’ and 12’ are a versatile length that also work great for surfing, especially for larger paddlers. The benefit of having a slightly longer paddle board for surfing is twofold: first, you have the ability to also paddle flatwater or cruise around without having to buy a totally different board; and second, they are typically less expensive and easier to buy online without having to find an actual surf shop.

WIDTH

Choosing the proper width for surfing a paddle board will depend on a paddler’s experience. The average width of a SUP is 32”, but beginners with little experience may want to opt for a wider board, such as the Boardworks Kraken. At 34”, this board will provide more stability and lead to more success when catching waves. For those who have more experience and prefer more maneuverability, consider the Bote Flood’s narrower 30” width

VOLUME AND WEIGHT CAPACITY

A SUP’s overall weight capacity, or total weight it can carry including the paddler, is usually determined by its volume. High volume SUPs = High weight capacity.

When choosing the best paddle board for surfing, you want a weight capacity that is higher than your bodyweight but with no more than a 60 lb difference. The weight capacity given is a maximum and shouldn’t be exceeded or performance will suffer. On the flipside, too big of a board will not only be difficult to paddle but also difficult to maneuver on waves.

FIN BOX

The area underneath the tail of the board that offers options to add or remove additional fins in order to customize a particular fin setup.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A PADDLE BOARD

COST

Paddleboards range in price from a few hundred dollars up into the thousands. Cheaper models offer all the basics you need to learn on while more expensive models tend to have more sport-specific features. When you compare the cost of a paddle board to a boat or other watercraft, you actually get quite a bit of fun out of the low price.

If you’re a beginner paddle boarder, it’s up to you how much you want to invest. If you know you’ll only use the board occasionally, you might not want to spend as much. However, if you appreciate all the bells and whistles, you can find them in the pricier models. Here’s more information on how to choose a stand-up paddleboard to help make your decision easier.

WEIGHT

Paddleboards tend to weigh less than any other type of non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks or rafts. However, they can still weigh upwards of 40 lbs, so you may want to consider how much you can lift. If you’re used to hoisting toddlers and gym iron, you shouldn’t have a problem with a SUP that weighs less than 50 lbs (which includes all of the boards on this list).

WEIGHT LIMIT

Every paddle board also has a weight limit. Check the weight limit of your board against your bodyweight to determine if it will work for you. The boards can usually handle a bit more than they’re weighted at, but they become a little more difficult to steer with extra weight.

STYLE

C’mon ladies, you definitely look at how cute the design is before purchasing water toys, right? Well, most of these boards have high style quotients without being too cutesy (read: your teenage son wouldn’t drop dead being seen on it). Every year, board developers update their designs so you can stay on-trend.

USE

Most paddleboards are designed with a specific purpose in mind, whether leisure- or sport-related. You can certainly use any of the boards on this list for recreational sightseeing, but some have more specific uses than others (i.e. yoga, fishing, racing, etc). If a particular use is important to you, then make sure to pay attention to the Best For category before choosing which board to purchase.

STABILITY

The shape of the board determines whether it’s going to be a little more tipsy (faster) or stable (slower). While some level of instability makes you a stronger yogi, you don’t want to get too carried away. The width, depth, and bottom profile influence stability. Click here to learn more about what makes a paddle board more stable.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DECK PAD

The deck pad is the layer of foam or other material on the top of the board that gives you traction. Think about walking across a wet floor. The deck pad is the surface that keeps you from slipping and falling, especially when moving through sun salutations. Some deck pads also feature a little bit of padding to keep your feet happy through hours of standing.

TRACKING FINS

These little fins attach to the bottom of the board to help keep the paddleboard on course. Paddle boards, especially inflatable versions, often get pushed around by the wind, but tracking fins help you straighten them out.

LEASH

A leash is a strap that attaches from your wrist or ankle to your paddle board to keep you from losing it on the water. If you fall off your board, your leash will keep it within your reach so you don’t have to chase after it. Some boards come with a leash while others come with an attachment point for one. Shop stand up paddleboarding leashes separately.

ATTACHMENT POINT

Attachment points are slots or holes where you can attach your gear with a carabiner or other type of clip. Paddlers attach any number of items to these points including paddles, coolers, wet bags, leashes, anchors, and other necessities. You can also attach your board to someone else’s when you want to stay together.

  • Includes: Built-In Shoulder Strap And Upright Water Bottle Holder

BEST FOR: LONG DISTANCE TOURING

When it comes to touring (long distance paddling), you’re going to need a solid-type board that is sculpted with a planing hull – think of a V-shaped front like a sailboat or a kayak. This design choice is non-negotiable when trekking long distances and won’t be found in inflatable versions.

Starboard has been serving up quality boards since 1994 and their Touring Light Tech is the perfect budget paddle board for the adventurous beginner. This board starts with a sharp slicing nose that pushes water outwards and then transitions into a racing inspired design that reduces friction and surface tension.

The Touring Light Tech also sports a recessed deck, providing a lower center of gravity and thus more stability for the paddler. Just a heads up: this is the only board on the list that doesn’t come with a paddle.

Tower Adventurer

Specs

  • Includes: Carrying Case, Manual Pump, And Detachable Fins

BEST FOR: LIMITED STORAGE OPTIONS

Let’s face it, not everyone has a garage or a shed to store their gear, let alone a vehicle that will haul a 16-foot paddle board. Fear not! Enter the Tower Adventurer. You may be questioning the durability of an inflatable SUP, but rest assured this is no pool toy.

The Tower Adventurer is made from military-grade materials with a drop-stitch technology that performs better than many traditionally built SUPs. At 6’’ thick and just 24 lbs in weight, the Tower Adventurer can hold up to 200 lbs. with little flex while staying lightweight and easy to carry.

So you’re wanting to hit the surf at your local beach? You’re going to need a board that will contour properly to the waves you intend to carve. Moreover, this solid-type board is made with a lightweight Extruded Polystyrene (EPS) foam core and then finished with a Molded Thermoplastic Polycarbonate outer shell, giving you the solid foundation underfoot to aggressively hit the ocean.

Isle Lotus

When you’re just starting out, you might not want to throw all your money at your new sport until you’re better acquainted with brands, performance type, and other factors that might impact your buying decision. It’s great to have reliable budget options that you can test the waters in before you go all-in.

The principle “you get what you pay for” applies here. All of the options mentioned here are much better choices for beginning standup paddle boarders than a sub-$500 board made by a no-name company.

CONSTRUCTION

There are many different types of paddle boards, but all SUPs are either going to be an inflatable or a solid construction. They both have their benefits and it all depends on your needs.

Inflatables tend to be less expensive overall and are a great choice when storage space and transportation options are limited. Almost all inflatables come with a backpack style carrying case, making them an ideal choice when hiking into your chosen SUP location. Moreover, they tend to be more forgiving if dropped and are ideal when paddling whitewater. And before you ask, yes you can surf a SUP in up to Class III river water!

Solid constructions are more traditional and are a fantastic choice if you have the space to store it and a vehicle rack to safely transport your board. The solid design also allows you to choose different hull types for better performance depending on the activity. This is especially important if you have surfing or touring in mind. Lastly, solid boards tend to have a better center of gravity as they sit lower in the water than an inflatable.

HULL TYPE

The hull is the shape of the underside of a standup paddle board. There are two basic hull types when it comes to standup paddle boarding: planing hulls and displacement hulls. Your chosen activity will determine what type of hull is best for you.

A planing hull is flat and usually wide – this makes it great for stability and maneuverability for activities such as yoga, surfing, fishing, and whitewater.

A displacement hull has a pointed nose that helps push water out and away – think of a V-shaped front like a sailboat or a kayak. This is essential when paddling long distances as it helps your board to track better in the water.

LENGTH

Standup paddle boards come in three ranges of lengths that contribute to the overall specific purpose of the board.

    • Boards up to 10’ long are ideal for surfing.
    • Medium-length boards between 10’ and 12’ are the most common length, and are great for pretty much any use; it’s the most versatile length for manufacturers as it fits a variety of uses.
    • Anything over 12’ is designed for speed and distance, making it a great length for touring, camping, and racing. That said, boards over 12’ are most likely going to be a solid construction and will not only be more expensive, but also require ample storage space.

WIDTH

Generally speaking, the wider the board, the more stable the paddler will feel. 32’’ is a standard width for most SUPs and is the preferred width for someone who needs a lot of space, such as those practicing yoga or anglers reeling in the catch.

Anything narrower than 32’’ is ideal for speed, distance, and surfing, but may feel less stable to the beginner. Body type is also a consideration when choosing a width. Larger paddlers will require a wider board to maintain stability while a smaller paddler should choose a narrower board. Too wide of a board for a smaller framed paddler can make it difficult to paddle.

VOLUME AND WEIGHT CAPACITY

SUP volume is measured in liters and points towards the overall weight capacity (measured in pounds) of the board. The higher the volume of the board, the more weight it can carry.

This is especially important for anglers and campers as they have to consider the weight of their onboard supplies in addition to their own weight. Each board will list the weight capacity of the paddler as well as the overall weight capacity of the board.

Be careful when pushing the limits on this metric, as an overloaded board will sit lower in the water causing more drag and making it difficult to paddle. Thinking like a lightweight hiker here is important. A few extra pounds will multiply the force required to move the board, and the longer the distance, the harder it will be to paddle.

The entire bundle includes the inflatable paddle board, rolling storage bag, pump, three-piece paddle, and repair kit.

The designers of this paddle board also made sure that it holds more than 18 pounds per square inch (PSI) of air pressure. This means that the board stays rigid while you paddle instead of gradually collapsing in on itself, like some of the earliest inflatable paddle boards tended to do.

The board features a full-length deckpad which makes the entire board surface useful for a variety of activities, including fishing, yoga, and bringing small children or your dog along for a paddle.

This paddle board is a great selection for beginners because it’s wide design makes it incredibly stable. This design also increases your odds of a dry ride. The board’s keeled nose works to maximize glide and improve tracking so that you’ll have the smoothest and most efficient paddle experience possible. This paddle board performs well in a wide range of conditions and will be universally useful to introduce your whole family to the sport of paddle boarding. Its keeled nose works to guarantee a smooth paddling experience and its full high-volume design significantly improves stability for beginning paddlers. This design makes the board sit higher up and out of the water so that you’re more likely to experience a dry ride. It also gives you full use of the entire deck for your preferred activities.

In combination with a full-length deck pad, this board’s design makes it versatile for fitness, yoga, fishing, or a casual family paddle. The embossed EVA pad on its deck is also incredibly comfortable and helps you grip the board and stay balanced. Red Paddle Co Ride

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Length: 10' 6"
  • Weight: 21 lbs 12 oz
  • Paddlers: 1
  • Style: Inflatable
Features
  • All-Terrain Storage Backpack
  • Lightweight Construction
  • Cargo Tie-Downs

BEST FOR: THE FULL PACKAGE TO GET YOU STARTED

One of the main concerns about inflatable boards is that they aren’t as rigid as a solid board, but the RIDE from Red Paddle Co. puts those concerns to rest. It performs similarly to a solid board, but comes in a package that’s still deflatable and able to roll up and go with you anywhere. The RIDE comes in an All-Terrain backpack and includes a pump, repair kit, and water-resistant phone case.

The board’s lightweight construction reduces its overall weight by about 4.4 pounds and helps the board to maintain its rigidity even when not fully inflated. This paddle board comes with a lightweight Titan Pump that features a dual-chamber system and a high-flow handle. In short, it can pump air into your board at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. From a practical standpoint, this means a lot less time standing on shore pumping your board up and more time out on the water.

Boardworks Solr

Specs
  • Length: 10 ft 6 in
  • Weight: 26 lbs
  • Paddlers: 1
  • Style: Solid
Features
  • Lightweight Design
  • Adjustable, 2-Piece Carbon Paddle
  • Comfortable Deck Pad

BEST FOR: COMFORT ON FLATWATER, PERFORMANCE IN THE OCEAN

The Solr is a great paddle board for smaller beginners that want the type of rigidity that a solid board offers without having to lug a heavyweight board around every time you want to go out. Boardworks used expandable epoxy in this board’s design, which reduces waste, saves weight, and ensures a strong bond between the core, cloth, and resin.

The board comes with a two-piece carbon paddle. Carbon paddles, in general, tend to be a lot more lightweight and easy to use than paddles made from other materials. As you start to head out for longer and longer paddles, you’ll want to bring more gear along with you. This board offers a total of four tie-downs and a bungee system for gear storage.

Boardworks Sirena

Specs
  • Length: 10' 4"
  • Weight: 36 lbs
  • Paddlers: 1
  • Style: Solid
Features
  • Durable, Lightweight Construction
  • Convenient Carrying Handle
  • Comfortable Foam Deck

BEST FOR: ALL-AROUND USE ON FLATWATER OR THE OCEAN

The Sirena paddle board is constructed to be both lightweight and durable. It features a core made of low-density, machine-cut, and hand-shaped foam. The core is then hand-laminated with epoxy resins and fiberglass cloth. It also includes a bamboo core sandwiched between layers of foam that adds extra strength and makes this board more resistant to drops and dings.

This paddle board comes with a foam deck pad that helps you grip the board without causing excessive foot fatigue, which is a phenomenon that happens to many new paddlers as they try to grip the board and gain added stability. With two tie-down points and an adaptable fin setup, this paddle board is also adaptable for ocean use and longer excursions once you gain more experience.

Surftech Alta Air-Travel Inflatable

Specs
  • Length: 10 ft
  • Weight: 26 lbs
  • Paddlers: 1
  • Style: Inflatable
Features
  • Plenty Of Storage Compartments
  • Padded Seat And Thigh Braces
  • Foot Braces (to improve posture)
  • Carrying Backpack (for compact storage)

BEST FOR: THE TRAVELING PADDLER

If you’re looking for a paddle board that can keep up with you as you jet from one travel destination to the next, the Surftech Alta Air-Travel is a great choice. It features a removable, 9-inch soft fin that easily locks into place with a keyless screw when you’re ready to go and can be stowed away when in transit. Its padded handle also allows you to easily carry it across short distances once it’s inflated.

This inflatable paddle board is constructed with two layers. The upper and lower layers are stitched together and a sealing coat is applied to the entire board to make it withstand exposure to sunlight. It’s a very lightweight board that can still hold up against the rigors of a traveling lifestyle. The board also offers four deck tie-downs for securing gear and comes with a backpack for easy carry or compact storage.

Red Paddle Co Voyager Tandem

Specs
  • Length: 15'
  • Weight: 38 lbs 1 oz
  • Paddlers: 2
  • Style: Inflatable
Features
  • Diamond-Cut Deck Pad (for improved grip and stability)
  • Soft Touch Carry Handles (for easy transportation)
  • Eight-Inch Thickness

BEST FOR: PADDLING WITH A FRIEND

The Voyager Tandem was awarded Outside Magazine’s “Best Group Vessel” distinction in 2018’s Summer Buyer’s Guide. The board’s diamond-cut deck pad includes embossed detail that improves its grip and your ability to remain stable when paddling, especially when you have a partner on board. The board is eight inches thick, which serves to boost its overall volume and further improve its stability.

This board offers a total of seven soft-touch carry handles and two luggage spaces with tie-downs to keep items secure even if you and your partner do happen to go for an unexpected swim. The board’s compatibility with Railblaza and Ram Mounts products allows you to attach a mobile phone, action camera, paddle, or fishing rod so that you’re truly ready for any SUP adventure.

Aquaglide 10′ Cascade Inflatable

Specs
  • Length: 10'
  • Weight: 22 lbs
  • Paddlers: 1
  • Style: Inflatable
Features
  • Storage Backpack (for compact storage and transportation)
  • EVA Deck Pad (for increased comfort while standing)
  • Small Packed Dimensions

BEST FOR: FLATWATER PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY

The Aquaglide Cascade paddle board will allow you to paddle on multiple lakes or gentle rivers this summer without worrying about installing roof racks on your car or having a 10-foot board sticking out your SUV’s rear window. When deflated, this board packs into an included backpack with dimensions of 33 x 20 x 10 inches so that it easily fits in your car’s trunk or your closet at home.

This board is constructed with thousands of drop-stitch fibers that span the interior of its inflatable area. These fibers allow it to achieve and maintain a nearly rock-hard inflation pressure so that you can more easily balance on a rigid board on the water.

It’s also designed to withstand the use and abuse that comes with most active families with kids, or with traveling. This board’s EVA deck pad provides great traction and comfort while the Powerstrips on the hull help to improve its responsiveness to every paddle stroke.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING YOUR FIRST PADDLE BOARD

INFLATABLE VS. SOLID

Most of the rental or guide companies that offer paddle boarding lessons will start folks out on solid boards because a rigid board is much easier for beginning paddlers to learn on.

However, the technology used in inflatable paddle boards has improved drastically over the last several years. Improvements in fibers and stitching methods have made inflatable paddle boards able to hold greater air pressure, which makes them more rigid and easier to balance on.

If you already have a way to attach a board to the top of your vehicle or safely transport it in the back of a truck and you’ll primarily be paddling on one or two local waterways, you’ll be better off opting for a solid board.

If you’re unsure exactly where you want to be paddling every time or you don’t have a great way to transport a board that’s longer than 10 feet, the inflatable options are going to be your best bet.

WEIGHT

While paddle boards are much easier to carry than kayaks and canoes, they still require you to transport them safely from your vehicle to the water. If you’re a smaller paddler, carrying a 50-pound board every time you want to go out isn’t ideal.

Even if you buy an inflatable paddle board, you’ll most likely want to inflate it fully at your car before carrying it down to the water. When shopping for your ideal paddle board, make sure it weighs a reasonable amount that you feel comfortable carrying by yourself or that it includes enough carrying handles for your whole family to help carry a larger, multi-person board.

DECK PAD GRIP

The deck pad of a paddle board is responsible for the traction and comfort of your feet. A lot of what makes the best deck pad grip depends on personal preference.

Diamond cut deck pads tend to offer better grip, but some paddlers wind up complaining that it actually causes their feet to fatigue more quickly. Conversely, standard deck pads are still made of foam, but are generally flat. This makes them more comfortable, but they don’t offer as much grip.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HULL

The hull of a paddle board is the surface that sits underwater once you climb on. At the tail of the board’s hull is where the fin or fins will be attached. Most paddle boards feature a flat hull that make them easier to maneuver.

CORE

The core of a paddle board determines its strength and rigidity. The core connects the upper and lower layers of the board’s materials to create the inner structure. Inflatable boards don’t have a rigid core, so they rely on high-strength stitching to hold air pressure and give the board rigidity.

DECK

The deck of the paddle board is where you stand, sit, or kneel when paddling. This is also the area where you can strap down gear using bungees or D-rings. Some decks also include storage compartments where you can keep gear dry.

DECK PAD

The deck pad is generally made of foam and provides both grip and comfort for the paddler standing on the board. Depending on its design, some deck pads are more designed for grip while others are designed for comfort.

DIAMOND CUT

Diamond cut deck pads use a diamond shape to provide extra traction. These pads are much better at retaining their grip when they get wet.

EVA FOAM

One term you’ll see associated with paddle board deck pads a lot is EVA, which stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate. In short, it’s a type of foam that has a rubber-like softness and flexibility.

TEAK DECK

Teak is a tropical hardwood used popularly in wooden boat construction. It is a beautiful hardwood with an abundance of natural oils and rubber locked into the tight grains of the wood.

RAIL-TO-RAIL VOLUME

The term “rail” refers to the side or edge of the paddle board. Many boards that are designed for racing have rails that reduce the board’s overall volume. In other words, they have a low rail-to-rail volume. This allows the board to move faster and respond more quickly to the paddler’s strokes.

With paddle boards for beginners, however, a higher rail-to-rail volume makes the board more stable. In turn, this makes the board easier for beginners to balance on. Boards with greater rail-to-rail volume also sit higher in the water and increase the likelihood that you stay dry while paddling.

FIN (OR FINS)

The fins that attach to the hull of a paddle board are what allow you to steer. They extend down into the water so that you can turn left or right when you desire. Some boards come with a single-fin design while others feature multiple fins. In general, more fins means that a board will be more responsive to your paddle strokes.

NOSE

The nose is the front of your paddle board. It is what should be pointing at your desired destination whenever you’re paddling. A keeled nose is designed to break the water ahead of your board more efficiently. This makes paddling easier and decreases overall resistance.

LEASH

Most paddle boards have a place near the tail of the board where you can attach a leash (the leash plug). This leash then attaches to whichever ankle you prefer. Usually, Velcro is used for better adjustability. A leash is really important to keep your board close to you if you do happen to fall off while learning how to SUP.

TAIL

The tail is the back of your paddle board. The board’s fin (or fins) will attach at the tail on the hull (bottom). If your board comes with a leash, it will attach at the tail to the leash plug on the deck.

BEST ALL-PURPOSE SUP PADDLE

You’re looking all over for a SUP paddle, unsure what to pick with all the information you have to sift through. Well, my friend, this Abahub model won’t do you wrong, especially if you’re wavering about price or user-friendliness. It has a middle-of-the-line seriousness about it that meets your most basic needs (as long as you’re over 5’ tall).

The paddle offers reasonable mechanics with its lightweight, durable design. The blade powers you through the water with a level of flexibility that prevents it from breaking or yanking. Meanwhile, your hands rest comfortably up against the ergonomic grip. When it’s time to pack up, the paddle breaks down into 3 pieces and fits inside the included storage case for convenience.

BEST PADDLE FOR DURABILITY

The main design focus of the Makai was on durability, especially for limit-pushing riders and renters. You know the kind, the ones who give meaning to “ride it like a rental.” The reinforced blade and shaft stand up against the rocks, tree trunks, and sand bottoms you’ll inevitably push up against anyway.

The adjustable handle accommodates riders of different sizes. All you have to do is lift the lever on the handle and pull the shaft to lengthen it. Switching between riders is a cinch! The same lever disconnects the two pieces of the paddle so you can slide them into your trunk or storage cubby.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SUP PADDLE

MATERIALS

SUP paddle shafts and blades are usually made out of some combination of plastic, carbon fiber, aluminum, fiberglass, and nylon. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages, but the desired final product is always a lightweight yet durable paddle. Aluminum and nylon tend to be on the cheaper and slightly heavier side while fiberglass and carbon fiber increase the price but are even lighter and higher quality.

LENGTH

The best SUP paddle should reach the water without having to bend over (too short) or reach too high (too long). To get the length right, you typically want to add 8-12” to your height. When you stand the paddle on end next to your body, you should be able to hold the grip with your hand straight above your head. You just need to find an adjustable paddle within this correct size range.

BLADE

The shape, size, and offset of the blade affects how you move through the water. Generally, larger people do well with larger, more powerful blades and smaller blades are easier for smaller people to wield. The bottom of the blade will either have an arching teardrop shape or a rectangular shape. Teardrops provide a more powerful stroke while rectangular blades take less effort for leisurely paddling. Finally, the offset has a subtle effect on your stroke and most recreational paddles have around a 10 degree offset.

STORAGE

SUP paddles can be pretty long and cumbersome when you consider your storage options at home. A paddle that breaks down into two or three pieces is easier to transport in a vehicle and store in a basement or garage than a long one-piece paddle. If your space is limited, consider whether or not your paddle will fit.

WEIGHT

The difference between a 1lb paddle and a 2lb paddle may sound trivial until you multiply it by thousands of strokes over the course of a single trip. The lighter the SUP paddle, the less fatigued your arms get, so choose a lighter model especially if you plan to be on the water for awhile.

REI offers a more in-depth explanation about how to choose the perfect SUP paddle.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

SHAFT

The shaft of an SUP paddle is the long handle portion between the grip and blade. The length and material the shaft are made out of influence how well you paddle.

BLADE

The blade is the wide, lower part of the paddle that dips into the water and propels the paddleboard forward. The blade’s offset angle, surface area, and shape affect the power of your stroke.

BLADE OFFSET

The offset of the blade is the angle it forms in relation to the shaft. An offset around 10 degrees is practical for most recreational paddlers while a 12 degree offset is best for racing.

GRIP

The portion at the top of the paddle that you hold in your hand is refered to as the grip. A T-shaped grip looks the way it sounds with a bar that crosses the handle. An oval or palm grip fits right into the middle of your hand. Some grips are rubberized to make them easier to hold.

ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics is the study of efficiency. As it pertains to SUP paddles, ergonomics refers to how easy the paddle is to use, how friendly the grip is on your hands, and how well the paddle maintains your posture. Proper ergonomics help prevent strain and misalignment.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST FISHING SUPS

SHAPE

Since you’ll need more stability than a standard stand up paddle board because of all the movement that happens whenever you fish, you’ll want a stand up paddle board with a wide, long, and stable shape.

Touring boards or surf SUPs won’t be great for fishing as touring boards tend to be too narrow and surf SUPs tend to be too short, loud, and slow. An all-around board or yoga specific SUP could be a great compromise if you’re wanting a board that isn’t fishing-specific.

Fishing SUPs should be at least 10 feet long and 30 inches wide. The nose should be round, rather than very pointed, unless you have enough length to make the board more stable. Fortunately, with the right paddle technique, you can easily make most fishing SUPs work for you thanks to their friendly and sturdy shape.

WEIGHT

If your board is too heavy for you to carry, chances are that you’ll rarely use it. Opt for a board on the lighter end of the scale if you won’t be getting a carrier. Some fishing-specific SUPs can be as heavy as nearly 70 pounds, a weight that’s too heavy for most people to carry long distances. Standup Journal has advice for transporting your SUP, so it’s possible that even a heavy board could still work for you.

If you want a fishing SUP that is lightweight and easy to transport, inflatable SUPs tend to be much lighter and can roll into the size of a backpack.

FISHING FEATURES AND STORAGE CAPACITY

Fishermen often paddle with a plethora of gear. One of the biggest differences between a standard SUP and a fishing SUP is storage capacity. You’ll want — at the bare minimum — a SUP that has a bungy section for tying down tackle boxes. You can also get a SUP that comes with a rod holder, built-in cooler box, and dedicated tackle area. Some fishing SUPs can even transition into semi-kayaks complete with seat rests for when it’s time to simply sit and relax.

Keep in mind that the more fishing-specific a SUP tends to be, the bulkier it might get. Fishing kayaks also tend to have more things that can snag or catch, so they don’t typically make the best SUPs for children or beginner paddlers.

INFLATABLE VS. SOLID

There are pros and cons to having an inflatable or solid (traditional) stand up paddle board.

Inflatable boards tend to be more prone to tearing and are less stable than a solid board, but can be deflated and rolled for easy transport. Inflatable SUPs are a great option if you’re limited on space or don’t have a vehicle that’s capable of fitting a large board. These also are often cheaper than a solid SUP, which makes them perfect for fishermen on a budget who still want a nice piece of gear. You can learn how to inflate your SUP from Tower Paddle Boards.

While solid boards tend to be heavier, more expensive, and harder to transport, they are typically built better and are more sturdy than inflatable stand up paddle boards. Most advanced paddlers opt for a solid paddle board with more fine-tuned dimensions and features.
