ABSOLUTE OUTDOOR Onyx A/M-24

Specs
  • Type: Inflatable
  • Floatation: 22.5 lbs.
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Adjustment Mechanism: Waist
  • USCG Rating: Type V
Features
  • Choose Between Automatic Or Manual Inflation
  • Comfortable Low Profile Design
  • Back-Up Oral Inflation Tube
  • Durable Fabric Resists Punctures
  • Side Pockets
  • Soft Neoprene Neckline Prevents Chafing

BEST FOR: BIG-BOAT SAILING

The Onyx A/M-24 is one of the most popular inflatable life jackets on the market. When not inflated, it’s streamlined and comfortable enough that you’ll hardly know it’s there. In the water, it deploys over 22 lbs. of inflation either automatically on immersion or manually through a pull tab: the jacket can be set up for either manual or automatic inflation.

Once the jacket is inflated, the gas canister must be replaced and the jacket repacked, so this is one to use if immersion is rare and unexpected. Inflatables are ideal for crew on larger boats who need protection in case they go overboard but don’t want the bulk of a conventional life jacket.

Onyx MoveVent

Specs
  • Type: Conventional
  • Floatation: Not Specified, Minimum 15.5 lbs. (For Type III Certification)
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Adjustment Mechanism: Side, Shoulder
  • USCG Rating: Type III
Features
  • Front And Back Ventilation
  • Flexible Panel Design For Freedom Of Movement
  • Integrated Whistle
  • Expandable Pocket With Mesh Drainage

BEST FOR: SAFETY ON A BUDGET

This is a highly rated life jacket providing a competitive feature set at an accessible price point. Rather than using the contoured foam panels common in more expensive jackets, the MoveVent achieves a snug fit by mounting foam panels on a flexible mesh base, keeping the foam hugging your body and providing ventilation at the same time. An expandable zippered pocket, integrated whistle, and a solid range of adjustments round out an excellent entry-level life jacket.

If you’re looking for a comfortable, capable life jacket that will keep you afloat without sinking your budget, the MoveVent is a top candidate.

Stohlquist Kahuna

Specs
  • Type: Conventional
  • Floatation: 18 lbs. for Small Size, 22 lbs. For M And L Sizes
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Adjustment Mechanism: Side, Waist, Shoulder
  • USCG Rating: Type III
Features
  • High Buoyancy
  • Large Front Pockets
  • Fleece-Lined Hand Warmer Pockets
  • Low Profile Design For Easy Movement

BEST FOR: ROUGH WATER

What’s a white water vest doing in a list of sailing PFDs? It’s all about flotation. If you sail in choppy water or if you’re a lean, muscular person with low natural buoyancy, you’ll want a life jacket with the lift to keep your head above water when it counts. This vest packs extra foam and distributes that foam so effectively that you’ll hardly feel the added bulk.

Stohlquist is a premier life jacket manufacturer with a wide range of quality products, and the Kahuna reflects that heritage, offering comfort, practical design, and a host of useful features along with all that buoyancy!

Astral BlueJacket

Specs
  • Type: Conventional
  • Floatation: 16.3 lbs.
  • Gender: Unisex
  • Adjustment Mechanism: Side, Waist, Torso
  • USCG Rating: Type III
Features
  • Two-Panel Fit System Eliminates Ride-Up
  • Adjustable Torso Height For Custom Fit
  • Back Pocket And Shoulder Ports For Hydration Bladder
  • Huge Front Pocket With Internal Organizer Sections
  • Additional Side Pockets
  • Pocket With Antenna Port For VHF Radio

BEST FOR: WHEN YOU WANT THE BEST

Astral has a reputation for introducing cutting-edge design and construction features in their top of the line products, and the Blue Jacket lives up to that tradition. Multiple contoured foam panels shift independently as you move, maintaining comfort and flexibility while eliminating ride-up. There’s a huge clamshell front pocket with multiple zippered sub-pockets inside, along with side pockets. A rear pocket fits a hydration bladder (not included) that can feed over either shoulder, a big plus when your hands are busy and you need a drink. A huge range of adjustability assures a perfect fit.

The Blue Jacket isn’t cheap, but if you’re looking for a premium life jacket that combines impeccable fit, innovative design, and bombproof construction with environmentally sensitive materials and manufacturing, it’s worth the price.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A LIFE JACKET FOR SAILING

COMFORT

If a life jacket isn’t comfortable, you’re likely to take it off, and it won’t help you if you’re not wearing it! Life jacket manufacturers pursue comfort by using different systems to keep foam matching body contours, multiple adjustments to let the user control fit, and soft fabrics to control chafing. Sailing is an active sport, so look for wide armholes and designs that don’t interfere with movement.

TYPE: CONVENTIONAL VS INFLATABLE

Conventional life jackets use high-density foam to provide flotation. They are inherently buoyant and require no activation. They can also be bulky and may be uncomfortably hot in warm weather.

Inflatable life jackets use a compressed gas canister to inflate automatically on immersion or manually using a pull tab. Many jackets can be set for automatic or manual-only inflation. They are very streamlined when not inflated and are comfortable and cool to wear. Once the jacket is inflated, you must replace the gas cartridge. Sailors on larger boats, who need a jacket only as an emergency measure if they fall overboard, often prefer inflatables for their superior comfort. You will need extra gas cylinders, and you should note that you may not be able to ship or carry compressed gas cylinders by air.

RIDE-UP?

Ride-up occurs when a life jacket moves up the wearer’s body instead of lifting the body. If the shoulder straps are high above your shoulders and the front of the jacket is up under your chin, the jacket is riding up, and it’s not floating you properly. Test for ride-up by pulling up on the shoulder straps. If you can lift them to your ears, tighten the side straps and the waist strap. If it still rides up, it’s probably too large. A waist strap that tightens below the ribs can control ride-up effectively, but only if it’s snug!

FEATURES

Life jackets offer numerous features, and you’ll have to decide what’s important to you. If you like gear on the outside of your jacket look for lash tabs and attachment points; if you’d rather stay streamlined, you’ll prefer a range of pockets. If you sail in hot weather, ventilation is key; if not, it’s a lower priority. Consider the type of sailing you do and the conditions you normally sail in and decide which features matter most to you.

POCKETS

Most life jackets have pockets, but the number, configuration, and accessibility may vary. Consider what you’re likely to keep in the pockets and how many you’ll need. Many boaters prefer to keep critical equipment like a knife or whistle in a dedicated pocket where they can’t get mixed up with other items.

LEARN MORE

REI offers a useful guide to choosing a life jacket, and the US Coast Guard has helpful advice on how to choose and how to use a life jacket.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

COAST GUARD CLASSIFICATIONS

The US Coast Guard classifies life jackets in five types.

  • Type I and II jackets place most of their flotation in the front of the chest. This helps to turn an unconscious swimmer upright but leaves the jackets too bulky for most recreational use.
  • Type III jackets are preferred by most sailors and water sports enthusiasts. They have a minimum of 15.5 lbs of flotation and allow a wide range of movement. They will not turn an unconscious user face-up.
  • Type IV devices are throwable cushions or rings. In many states, boats over 16 feet are required to carry at least one type IV device.
  • Type V devices are specialized life jackets designed for specific purposes and certified only for those purposes. The label will specify the approved use of the device.

Annapolis Performance Sailing offers this more detailed guide to the types of life jackets.

FLOATATION

Flotation or buoyancy is the force needed to keep the wearer’s head out of the water. Most adults need 7 to 12 pounds of flotation in calm water. This may vary with weight, body fat, lung size, and other factors, and you may need more flotation in rough water.

LASH TABS

Lash tabs are fixed points where you can attach a whistle, knife, strobe or other accessories that you might need in a hurry.

SIZES

Life jacket sizes are based on chest size, not height or weight. Measure your chest across the widest point, just below the armpits, and consult the manufacturer’s size recommendations.

Bilge pumps are definitely not the sexiest part of your boat, and they’re probably the last thing you’d show off to a visitor. They’re also one of the last things you’d want to see fail at a critical moment. Bilge pumps perform a vital function, removing the water that inevitably seeps into your boat from rainfall or waves and through propeller shafts, stopcocks, and other hull openings. Water in the hull can dramatically reduce performance and even lead to foundering, and a good bilge pump system can make the difference between an interesting day and a disaster. Fortunately, we have a variety of pumps to choose from, suitable for everything from day sailors to cruising boats, and there are options out there to suit every boat and owner. This guide to the best bilge pumps should get you started!

Reviews - The Best Sailboat Bilge Pumps

Whale Gusher Urchin

Specs
  • Flow Rate: 14.5 Gallons Per Minute (GPM)
  • Submersible: No
  • Automatic: N/A
  • Switching: N/A
Features
  • Through-Deck or Through-Bulkhead Installation
  • Pump Head Adjusts To Fit Suitable Space
  • Best For Boats Under 40 Feet

BEST HAND PUMP

Back in the days of sail, sailors would spend part of their watch “on the pumps”, manually pumping water out of the bilges. Electric motors usually do that work now, and the command “man the pumps” is not something any of us are likely to hear. Still, any electrical system can fail, and if you need an electric pump you need a manual backup.

The Whale Urchin is a proven, reliable option that’s become an automatic purchase for many sailors. It’s compact, unobtrusive, and out of the way until you need it, which we all hope you never will! The Urchin is designed for boats under 40 feet. If you have a larger vessel or want higher capacity, look at the Whale Titan, which can move up to 28 GPM.

Note that the rated 14.5 GPM is based on a pump rate of 70 strokes per minute, and it takes a very motivated sailor to sustain that rate. On the other hand, if your power has failed and you’re taking on water, motivation is likely to be pretty high!

Seaflo Submersible Automatic

Specs
  • Flow Rate: 750 Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Submersible: Yes
  • Automatic: Yes
  • Switching: Internal Float Switch
Features
  • Fully Automatic: Turns On When Water Accumulates
  • No Power Use Until Water Is Present
  • Anti-Airlock Protection
  • Can Run Dry Without Burning Out

BEST BUDGET PUMP

If you’re looking for an affordable no-nonsense pump, Seaflo has delivered the goods. This pump has substantial capacity, is fully submersible, and needs very little attention: the internal float valve turns it on when there’s enough water in the bilge to pump (around 1.5 inches), turns it off when it’s no longer needed, and does not draw battery power to run a sensor. You just need to keep the intake screen clear (as with any pump at any price) and do periodic checks to make sure the pump is running. This is a solid value for the small boat owner.

Most reviews of these pumps are very positive, but they are inexpensive units imported from China and a few users have reported receiving defective units. Check yours as soon as it arrives!

Rule LoPro

Specs
  • Flow Rate: 900 Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Submersible: Yes
  • Automatic: Yes
  • Switching: Electronic Sensor
Features
  • Low Profile Design For Tight Spaces
  • Choice Of Discharge Ports Fits Multiple Hose Sizes
  • Rotating Discharge Body To Fit Any Space
  • Backflow Prevention Valve

BEST COMPACT PUMP

Many sailboat bilges are low and narrow, and getting a conventional pump into a position where it has access to the lowest point in the bilge can be a real challenge. The Rule LoPro is designed with a low, flat profile that allows it to fit where other pumps won’t and a rotating discharge body that lets you adjust the hose position to fit the available space. Those features make the LoPro an ideal choice for initial pumping in any boat with narrow, inaccessible bilges.

Pair this with another unit mounted higher up and you’ll have full protection! Rule is a dominant name in the bilge pump market and is known for its high-quality products. The LoPro is no exception, but as with any pump, its life will be shorter in a dirty, oily bilge, and it needs to be installed and wired carefully. Rule’s electronic sensor system relies on a brief pulse of power to check for pressure on the impeller blades every 2.5 minutes. This could cause battery drain and recurring noise issues, though in practice few users seem to notice!

Attwood Tsunami

Specs
  • Flow Rate: 500, 800 or 1200 Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Submersible: Yes
  • Automatic: No
  • Switching: Float Switch (Sold Separately)
Features
  • Patented Shaft Seal Prevents Leaks
  • Tinned Wiring Prevents Corrosion
  • High-Quality Bearings, Brushes, Alloys, And Magnets
  • Replaceable Motor Core For Fast Servicing

BEST OVERALL VALUE

Attwood Marine delivers a clear winner in the Tsunami, a rugged, simple machine that’s available in 3 sizes: 500, 800, or 1200 GPH. A rugged polymer casing resists damage from the chemicals, fuel residues, and detergent residues so often present in bilge water, and there’s special attention paid to sealing shafts and wiring against water intrusion.

Attwood takes an unconventional approach to switching. The lack of an internal float switch might seem like a disadvantage, but switches are often the first part of a pump to wear out, and if the switch is internal, a worn-out switch means replacing the pump. The Tsunami allows you to choose an external float switch and replace it when necessary, and the easily replaceable motor core allows you to replace a worn motor rather than replacing the entire pump. This modular approach combines with the high quality of the components to provide a longer lifespan and allows you to keep spares for key components on hand to keep your pumps running.

Rule 4000

Specs
  • Flow Rate: 4000 Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Submersible: Yes
  • Automatic: Yes
  • Switching: Electronic Sensor
Features
  • Quick Release Strainer For Fast Cleaning
  • Vibration-Free Design For Reduced Noise
  • Ignition Protected For Use On Gasoline-Powered Vessels
  • 2” Output Hose

BEST LARGE CAPACITY PUMP

Rule dominates the market for large-capacity bilge pumps, and it’s likely that many of the larger boats in your local marina are relying on the Rule 56S to keep their bilges dry. This pump packs a lot of power into a compact package and has a reputation for quality, durability, and reliability.

Rule’s electronic sensor system relies on sending a brief pulse of power to the pump every 2.5 minutes to check for pressure on the impeller blades. Some similar systems generate complaints about pulses of noise and batteries drained by repeated pulses, but Rule has perfected its technology to a point where noise and battery drain are minimal. It’s not the cheapest pump out there, but if you own a large pleasure boat, you’re going to be more concerned with reliability and power than you are about price, and this pump delivers both!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BILGE PUMP FOR SAILING

Before you start shopping for bilge pumps, get a sense of what you’ll need. Different boats need different pumps in different arrangements. Many sailors prefer a low-profile pump in the deepest part of the bilge backed up by a higher capacity pump mounted a bit higher, designed to provide more capacity if the primary pump can’t handle the load.

If your boat has more than one compartment below the waterline, you’ll need pumps in each one. If you’re not sure what type of pump and what capacity you need, consult your boat manufacturer’s recommendations or ask for advice from more experienced boaters. Keeping water out of your boat is too important to leave up to chance or a guess!

KNOW YOUR BILGE

The bilge is the lowest portion of a boat’s hull (bottom). It’s where any water inside your boat goes, and it needs to be pumped out regularly. Many bilges have more than one compartment. Before you look at pumps, you should inspect your bilges and know what you need to keep dry.

Remember that bilge pumps are designed to remove water that enters your boat through slow leaks or over the deck. They will not pump fast enough to compensate for major leaks or hull damage!

CAPACITY

How much pumping power do you need? This table provides a rough estimate.

Boat Length

Minimum Total Pump Capacity (GPH)

Below 25’

600-800

26’-30’

800-1000

30’-35’

1000-1600

35’-40’

1600-2200

40’-45’

2200-4000

If you’re sailing in open water or rough conditions you’ll want to be at the high end of the range, and excess capacity never hurts.

Remember that pumps are tested for output with the inflow and outflow at the same level. In practice, you’re always pumping water up to a higher level, which reduces flow, especially in sailboats, which have deeper bilges than powerboats. It’s safe to assume that actual flow will be around 60% of rated flow, but if you’re planning to place a pump in a deep bilge, test it first to make sure it can lift water high enough and maintain an adequate flow rate.

HOW MANY PUMPS?

Most experts recommend that every boat over 16’ should carry a minimum of 2 bilge pumps. One is usually paced as low in the bilge as possible, with a larger capacity pump at a higher level to add power if the primary pump is unable to keep up with the water inflow.

If your boat has more than one compartment below the waterline you’ll need at least one pump, better two, for each compartment.

CLEAN BILGE, HAPPY PUMPS

Bilges naturally accumulate debris and spills, and many sailors are less than careful about keeping them clean. The bilge isn’t anyone’s favorite part of the boat, and inspection and cleaning aren’t fun. Do it anyway: debris in the bilge can clog pump intakes and spilled fuel or chemical residues from cleaning can damage pumps. If you keep your bilges clean, your pumps will last longer and will be less likely to fail when needed.

INSTALLATION

Bilge pumps operate under difficult conditions: saltwater immersion is not friendly to electrical connections! Many bilge pump failures trace back to improper installation, so if you’re not absolutely sure that you know what you’re doing, seek professional help and get it done right.

LEARN MORE

West Marine offers detailed advice on choosing a bilge pump, and Practical Sailor has a good list of installation and maintenance tips.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FLOW RATE

Flow rates are expressed in Gallons per Minute (GPM) or Gallons per Hour (GPH). European products may cite specifications in liters per hour or minute.

As noted above, manufacturers test output with intake and outflow at the same level. You’ll always be pumping water up, so your functional output will be less than the rated output. Your electrical system can also affect output: many pumps are tested at 13.6v, and if your batteries are putting out less you’ll have a lower flow rate!

SWITCHING

Automatic bilge pumps switch on as soon as they detect enough water to pump, and turn off when the water is reduced to levels below the detection threshold. This is usually achieved through a float valve or an electronic sensor. Some electronic sensors may require power to detect water, which can place additional demand on batteries.

Manually switched bilge pumps can either be switched on when you want to pump water or connected to an external float switch.

AIRLOCK PROTECTION

Some pumps can be “airlocked” if air enters the system. Many manufacturers use anti-airlock systems to assure that this doesn’t happen and to eliminate the need for pump priming.

BACKFLOW PROTECTION

Sailboats are designed to heel, and aggressive heeling may place bilge pump outflow ports below water level. If this happens siphon action may bring water into the boat. Installers often use an upward hose loop to reduce the chance of backflow, but some manufacturers also add backflow protection valves.

Sun, wind, and salt spray are all parts of a perfect day on the water. They can also put a serious burden on your eyes, especially when direct sunlight combines with reflections and glare from water, sails, and polished white fiberglass hulls. Eye protection is a must for sailors, and your street sunglasses are probably not going to be enough. Fortunately for our windows on the world, we have a wide range of shades to choose from, many specifically adapted for water sports in general and sailing in particular. We’ve made the choice easier by selecting five of the best sailing sunglasses at a range of price points.

What kind of eye protection do sailors need? Look for wraparound styles that protect against glare from the sides and from below. Polarized lenses with full UV protection are preferred. Sailing glasses should be impact resistant and have non-slip pads on the nose to keep them in place. Floating glasses have the advantage, especially for aggressive small-boat sailors who often end up in the water, and if you don’t have them (or even if you do) you’ll want to add a retaining strap with flotation. Sunglasses are a personal choice and you’ll want to choose a pair that suits your personal style, but these top picks make a good starting point for anyone looking for sail-specific eye protection!

Reviews - The Best Sunglasses for Sailing

SeaSpecs Classic Extreme

Specs
  • Lens Material: Polycarbonate
  • Polarized: Yes
  • UVA/UVB Protection: Yes
  • Floating: Yes
Features
  • Integrated Strap
  • Face-Hugging Design Keeps Water Out
  • Designed For Active Water Sports

BEST FOR: AGGRESSIVE SAILING

Half sunglass, half goggle, SeaSpecs will be your eyewear of choice if your style of sailing has you out in a trapeze blasting a catamaran across a choppy beam reach. Designed for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and other sports that have you in the water as much as on it, they feature a built-in retaining strap designed to keep them on your head even when things get wetter than expected! If they do come off they will float for easier recovery, but they’re affordable enough that losing a pair isn’t the end of the world. The accessible price also makes them a great choice for a spare pair of glasses to keep in the boat for backup use or if a friend needs a pair.

Reviews of the SeaSpecs are generally very positive, but a few users have reported issues with lenses popping out. On the other hand, with SeaSpecs priced at only a small fraction of what some of the higher-end glasses cost, a spare pair is a reasonable investment!

Bollé Python

Specs
  • Lens Material: Coated Polycarbonate
  • Polarized: Yes
  • UVA/UVB Protection: Yes
  • Floating: No
Features
  • Anti-Slip Nosepiece And Temples Keep The Glasses On Your Face
  • 14% Light Transmission - Made For Bright Conditions
  • Wraparound Design For Wide Field Of Vision

BEST FOR: STREET-TO-SAIL USE

If you’re looking for a pair of sunglasses that are as comfortable on the street as they are on deck, check these out. Bollé is known for blending serious sporting credibility with appealing style, and the Python is right in line with that reputation. The Python gets high marks for quality optics, a wide field of vision, non-slip nosepieces and temple linings, and coated lenses that resist scratching, impact, wetting, and fog. These glasses cut a lot of light, and are best used in very bright conditions: if you like wearing sunglasses at night, use a different pair!

On the downside, they don’t float, so make sure you have a retaining strap that does! A small minority of users report issues with the coating peeling off. Some fakes are reportedly circulating, so be sure to buy from a reputable source.

COSTA Brine

Specs
  • Material: Glass
  • Polarized: Yes
  • UVA/UVB Protection: Yes
  • Floating: No
Features
  • Lightweight Glass Lenses Provide Maximum Clarity
  • Cuts 99% Of Visible Glare
  • Environmentally Sensitive BioResin Frames

BEST FOR: LENS CLARITY

Glass lenses provide greater clarity than any other material, but most manufacturers shy away from them because they are usually heavier and bulkier than polycarbonate. Costa claims that their unique technology allows them to produce glass lenses that are 20% thinner and 22% lighter than those of any competitor, allowing them to maximize clarity without excessive weight and bulk. The Brine was designed for saltwater fishing but is highly adaptable to sailing, particularly if a clear view of the water is a high priority!

The glass lenses do leave these too heavy to float, so you’ll need a floating retaining strap. They’re also on the pricey side, but the quality is proportional to the price!

Maui Jim World Cup

This version offers a neutral grey tint with a hint of bronze that combines exceptional bright-light performance with added contrast and superb color rendition in cloudy or foggy conditions, making it a great choice when you’re not sure what the weather will dish out! The manufacturer claims that “patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology wipes out 99.9% of glare, blocks 100% of harmful UV and boosts color”, and a small army of satisfied customers backs up their claim!

As with most glass-lens sunglasses, these will not float, so be sure your retaining strap does!

Gill Classic

  • UVA/UVB Protection: Yes
  • Floating: Yes
Features
  • Hydrophobic And Oleophobic Coatings
  • Lenses Exceed EN (European Standards Organization) Safety Standards
  • Total UV Protection: UVA, UVB, And UVC

BEST FOR: ALL-AROUND VALUE

No list of sailing sunglasses would be complete without an entry from Gill: the company was founded by sailors, and while they are popular across the water sports spectrum, they are designed first and foremost for sailing. As you’d expect from sailing-specific eyewear these check all the usual boxes, and they get particular praise for a hydrophobic exterior coating that sheds water and salt residue and an oleophobic inner coating that resists fingerprints, sunscreen, and skin oils. The high-grade optics slash glare and reduce eye fatigue. They even look good, at least to our sense of style!

The downside? We’re still looking for one!

BONUS PRODUCTS

TORTUGA STRAPS FLOATZ

Any sunglasses you use on the water need a retaining strap, and even if your glasses float, you’ll want to add flotation to keep them on top of the water and visible. Tortuga Straps makes a high quality floating strap that consistently gets rave reviews!

CROAKIES FLOAT KIT

If you already have a retaining strap you like, these bright yellow floats will add flotation and keep your fallen shades visible in the water! These are worth considering if you often lose glasses, or if you use an expensive pair of shades that you really don’t want to lose.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SUNGLASSES FOR SAILING

DESIGN

Any sunglasses are better than no sunglasses, but if you’re going to be spending much time on the water you will want a pair that is specifically designed for water sports. Look for a wrap-around design that gives you a broad field of vision and protects your eyes against glare from the sides and reflected light from below. You want glasses that hug your head and have non-slip nose and temple contact points: you need your glasses to stay on your head when you’re moving quickly and exposed to wind and water. They should be comfortable: you’ll be wearing them for hours at a time.

MATERIALS

Metal frames corrode quickly when exposed to salt water. Most makers of water sports glasses use corrosion-resistant materials with hardware designed to resist salt exposure.

Many entry-level glasses use acrylic lenses, which are inexpensive but easily broken and scratched, and prone to distortion. Polycarbonate lenses can be made to much higher standards, and many manufacturers have proprietary polycarbonate blends and manufacturing techniques. Glass provides the highest optical quality, at the expense of added weight and bulk.

PROTECTION

You wear sunglasses for protection from the sun, and that’s the primary consideration. You want polarized lenses with the highest possible degree of UV protection. Remember that UV-protective coatings are colorless, so a dark tint doesn’t necessarily translate to better protection! For extra UV protection, consider wearing a sailing hat, as well.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UV PROTECTION

Ultraviolet light is invisible to the naked eye but can do serious damage to the skin and eyes. There are three wavelengths of light classified as Ultraviolet: UVAm UVB, and UVC. UVC has the shortest wavelength and most UVC light is absorbed by the atmosphere, but full UVA and UVB protection is a must for serious water sports eye protection. Remember that the tint on sunglasses has nothing to do with UV protection, and even dark-tinted glasses may be inadequate. Look for a specific UV protection rating!

If you want to know more about UV rays, their effects, and how to protect against them, this review from the World Health Organization will tell you all you need to know!

LENS COATINGS

Manufacturers use a variety of coatings to keep lenses clean and clear:

  • Hydrophobic Coatings repel water and prevent water stains and salt residue from forming on lenses. They are often used on the outer surface of a lens.
  • Oleophobic Coatings repel oils and prevent fingerprints and stains from sunscreen and skin oils. They are often used on inner lens surfaces.

POLARIZATION

Light reflecting off a flat surface can produce intense glare and is “polarized” into a horizontal plane. Polarizing lenses are treated with a special filter that allows only vertical waves to pass, cutting out that reflected glare. Reflected light is a major presence in marine environments, and polarizing lenses are a must! One downside of polarizing lenses is that you may be unable to read LCD screens and some instrument panels.

This article from the American Academy of Ophthalmology explains polarized light and how to protect against it in detail!

Sailing gives us freedom: we don’t need a motor or fuel to travel the oceans. That freedom isn’t absolute. Most sailors still rely on electricity for lighting, refrigeration, small appliances, and to run the electronics that we rely on for navigation and safety. That means we need batteries, and if we rely on batteries, we have to charge the batteries. Since we’re already using the wind to move us from place to place, it makes sense to use that same energy source to keep our batteries charged up and ready for action. Wind generators are increasingly becoming a standard feature on cruising sailboats, and a wide range of products have emerged to meet the demand. This review of the best wind generators for sailboats will help you select the product that best meets your needs.

BEST POWER-TO-PRICE RATIO

If you’re looking to step up to a higher-output wind system without spending a fortune, Missouri General delivers with the Freedom II. This unit adopts a radically different design philosophy, featuring 11 carbon fiber blades to get maximum power out of wind in the lower end of the charging range. The Freedom II uses a permanent-magnet generator and several other unique design features to achieve high efficiency and durability.

This unit is quite inexpensive on a price-for-power scale, but it does not arrive installation-ready and you’ll have to add a charge controller, a dump load to protect your battery from overcharging, and cables. You’ll probably also need to have an electrician install the unit to assure that those components are correctly connected and working as they should!

Nature Power 400W

Specs
  • Blades: 3
  • Optimal Power AT: 27 MPH
  • Rated Output: 400 Watts

BEST LIGHTWEIGHT BUDGET WIND GENERATOR

Nature Power turbines are designed specifically for marine use and offer a durable, corrosion-resistant cast aluminum body and whisper-quiet carbon fiber blades. There’s a specialized electromagnetic braking system designed to keep the unit within its electrical and mechanical limits without the wear and tear associated with mechanical braking and a smart controller that adjusts the voltage-to-current ratio for peak charging efficiency. The low weight of the unit makes it ideal for mast installations or other high mounts.

As with any relatively low-output wind generator, you can’t expect to rely on this unit for all of your charging needs. It’s very well suited to use in conjunction with solar panels: on hot, still days the sun does the work, and when the weather turns sour or you’re out at sea, the wind will kick in with its share. This is an excellent choice for the wind component of a combined solar/wind generation system.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A WIND GENERATOR

It’s important to recognize that while wind power is useful, it isn’t magic. Most modern wind generators will begin generating power in quite light winds, but the output may be minimal and you’ll need sustained higher winds to deliver the charge you want.

If you’re moving downwind, you may get less charge than you expect: if the wind is at 20 knots and your downwind speed is 8 knots, your wind generator will be effectively receiving 12 knots, not 20! Many sailors find that a wind generator combined with a solar array is the most effective power solution, and some add a towed generator that generates power when dragged through the water as an additional option. The power mix that best suits you is something you’ll have to decide, but there’s a good chance that wind will be part of it!

Read through these things to consider to get a better sense of how to choose which wind generator is right for you so that you can get back on the water and enjoy the wind in your hair without worrying about losing electricity unexpectedly!

MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

A common complaint about wind generators is that they don’t deliver as much power as expected. This is more often a problem of simple physics than an issue with defective units or improper installation. The power delivered by wind increases with the cube of the wind speed, meaning that (keeping things very simple), a 20-knot wind delivers 8 times the power of a 10-knot wind. If you expect a unit that’s rated to deliver 400 watts of power at 28 knots of speed to deliver 200 watts at 14 knots, you will be disappointed, and it won’t be the unit’s fault!

While most units will cut in (start working) at 6 to 7 knots, don’t expect to generate measurable power until you reach 10-12 knots. Remember that if you’re on a downwind heading the apparent wind – the wind speed actually experienced by your generator – will be wind velocity minus hull speed. And remember that most anchorages were chosen because they are protected from the wind.

All in all, you are likely to find yourself generating less power than you expected. That doesn’t mean the installation is useless: it will contribute, it will charge your batteries while you sail, and if used in conjunction with solar panels, it can meet your charging needs. It’s a useful tool, not a magic bullet!

INSTALLATION

Your choice of generator will be affected by your installation options. Some sailors opt for masthead or mizzenmast installations, which can receive up to 50% more wind than lower placements but which are less accessible for maintenance and involve longer cable runs with more resistance. If you’re looking at such an installation, you’ll want a lightweight, low-maintenance unit. Most sailors prefer installation above the cockpit or transom, high enough to keep blades away from people and equipment but low enough for easy access and relatively short cable runs.

WATCH OUT FOR HIGH WINDS

Manufacturers claim very high maximum wind tolerances, but these are often based on wind-tunnel tests using controlled wind from a single direction. Turbulence can increase the burden on the device, and if you’re expecting wind in excess of 50 knots, taking down the generator is a wise precaution.

THE NOISE FACTOR

Noise and vibration were once huge problems with wind generators, with users reporting everything from a repetitive whump to a screaming howl. Modern construction and improved blade design have made turbines much quieter, but noise and vibration can still be issues. It’s great to generate power while you sleep, but not so great to have your generator keeping you awake! You may wish to check out some working installations to get a sense of how much noise is involved.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

ABOUT THOSE NUMBERS

Rated Output is the maximum number of watts a unit can put out under ideal conditions. These numbers are based on wind tunnel tests and are rarely if ever achieved in the field.

Minimum (or “cut-in”) Wind Speed is the wind speed required to turn the blades. Very little power will be produced at this level.

Maximum Power is achieved at a specific target wind speed. Most units are designed to begin braking or “cutting out” power at speeds above this level.

Blade Diameter is the end-to-end distance between blade tips. You’ll need to consider this distance when mounting the unit to keep the blades well clear of any obstructions.

Voltage is the unit’s output voltage, which needs to match the voltage of your battery array.

Maximum Wind Speed is the highest wind the unit can survive. This may be substantially reduced by turbulence!

SOME COMMON FEATURES

Charge Controllers are devices that regulate the output of your generator to maximize the charging of your battery. Some units have built-in controllers with different levels of sophistication, and others do not.

Braking may be mechanical or electromagnetic and is used to assure that the unit’s rotation will not exceed its mechanical or electrical limits. Electromagnetic braking is claimed by some to produce less wear and tear.

Tracking Systems keep the blades facing the wind and keep the unit from spinning on its mount axis, which will twist the cable and damage the installation.

Blades may be fiberglass or carbon fiber, with more expensive units usually using carbon fiber. Many blades are designed to flex and shed wind if wind velocity exceeds design limits.

Corrosion Resistance is achieved by using a variety of coatings and materials. Marine environments place an aggressive burden on materials and both exterior materials and sealing are very important to keep units working.

A Dump Load is a device that diverts excess power to resistors that radiate it as heat, protecting batteries from overcharging.

BEST FOR COLD AND RAIN

We’ve been focusing on sun protection, but in some places, sailors are more likely to be dealing with rain and cold. One of those places is Seattle, and the Seattle Sombrero carries that name for a reason. It’s made to keep your head dry in the rain, and it has earned the coveted “Guaranteed to Keep You Dry” rating from Gore-Tex. A fleece lining keeps your head warm, and internal adjustments and an adjustable neck cord keep the hat snug. If the sun shines, it still carries a 50 UPF rating! If you sail in places where cold and rain are your main concerns, this will be your top pick.

Some reviewers say that the hat is too hot for warm-weather use, but that’s a bit like complaining that your wool sweater is too hot for summer. It’s a Seattle Sombrero, not a Miami Sombrero!

Tilley LTM6 Airflo

Specs
  • Material: Nylon
  • Size: Ten Sizes
  • UPF: 50
  • Brim: 3.25"
  • Chin Strap: Adjustable, Wraps Under Chin And Back Of Head For High Winds
Features
  • Will Not Wear Out, Shrink, Or Fall Apart - Guaranteed For Life
  • Hidden Pocket
  • Closed Cell Foam Keeps Hat Afloat
  • Soft Band Absorbs Sweat
  • Insured Against Loss For 2 Years

BEST OF THE BEST

What kind of hat carries a lifetime guarantee against wear and shrinkage and two years of insurance against loss? The Rolls-Royce of sun hats, the Tilley Airflo. The specs on paper don’t seem very different from other hats, but a legion of devoted fans and fanatical five-star reviewers point out that it’s about the quality, not the numbers. Tilley hats deliver the goods and keep on delivering them for life.

The only downside to the Tilley is that it’s a pricey purchase, for a hat. If that’s an issue, there are plenty of decent options farther up this list. If you want the best and you’re willing to pay for it, Tilley is there for you!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SAILING HAT

A sailing hat has to provide protection from the elements: the sun is at the top of the list, but if you sail in northern latitudes, you may also be concerned with rain and cold. Wind is part of our lives, so our hats need to anchor securely to our heads. Even the most secure anchor can come loose, so a hat that floats is a bonus! We appreciate hats that dry fast and pack small, with brims that are wide enough for protection from the sun and stiff enough to stay put in a stout breeze. The choices on our list face the challenges and come out on top!

HATS ARE IMPORTANT

Hats may seem like a frivolous item. They’re not. If you’re sailing in the sun, you need a good hat with a UPF 50 protection rating. The skin on the face and neck is particularly vulnerable to sun damage. Sunscreen helps, but dermatologists recommend a physical barrier. Get a good hat and wear it.

KNOW WHAT YOU NEED

The features that matter most to you will vary with the type of sailing you do. Assess your needs and choose a hat that fits them. If you’re just starting out and you’re not sure what you need, a good all-around sun hat will serve until you’ve refined your criteria.

KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE

A hat is a personal choice, and if you like your hat you’re more likely to be wearing it when you need the protection. It’s good to compare specs and features, but consider your personal preferences too, even if they seem a little irrational!

LEARN MORE

There aren’t many authoritative guides to choosing a sailing hat online, but Practical Sailor offers this interesting post on the subject followed by informative comments from a number of readers, and this vigorous discussion on the Yachting and Sailing World forum gives a sense of how actual sailors feel about their headgear choices!

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UPF RATINGS

A UPF rating is applied to clothing and accessories. It measures the amount of UVA and UVB radiation that penetrates the fabric and reaches the skin. It is a different rating system than SPF, which is used for sunscreens and cosmetics. A UPF rating of 50 provides near-complete protection.

BRIMS

The brim of a sailing hat is a compromise. If it’s not wide enough, it won’t protect your face or neck from the sun. If it’s too wide, the wind will force it up onto your forehead or down onto your face. Most sailing hats combine moderate-width brims with stiffeners to keep them in place.

MATERIALS

A sailing hat is going to be wet much of the time, so it needs to dry fast and stand up to repeated wetting and drying without degrading. It also needs to be crushable and packable without damage. Most sailing hats are made of nylon or a nylon/polyester blend.

INTEGRATED HEADBANDS

Sweat in the eyes can be inconvenient and annoying. Most sailing hats have integrated headbands to absorb perspiration and wick it away from the face.

This is a great pair of hiking pants designed specifically for a woman’s curves from Outdoor Research. The Ferrosi will take you through all your hiking adventures, even if you encounter the unexpected. Both wind and water resistant, these pants will keep you warm on those windy summits and dry on wet days, especially with the added drawstring cuff on the leg to roll the pant legs up – no more soaking your pant bottoms while hiking through wet terrain! You won’t find a higher quality performance pair of hiking pants for under $75. The Saharas are designed to be practical, comfortable, and breathable. They’re constructed from a nylon spandex blend that won’t restrict your range of motion. REI updated the latest iteration to feature a slimmer profile and more flattering shape. These pants feature a built-in belt and zippered pockets and can quickly be converted to shorts, which you can do without even taking your boots off.

What I like most about these is how well they shed water, making them an ideal choice on hikes in potentially inclement weather.

This pant is an excellent choice to take with you on your travels. It is lightweight and packs up small, so it’ll fit in your suitcase nicely, but is also well equipped to go on hikes. With the low profile and stretch waistband, you will get a flattering fit without the stretch. And because they are so light and trim, you can wear them while traveling to your destination.

This pant can also be purchased in two styles. The first has a cinch built into the ankle, enabling you to roll them up in hot or wet conditions. The other style has a fitted, elastic ankle for a trimmer and fitter look. And unlike many stretch pants, it even has two pockets!

Fjallraven Abisko Trekking Tights

BEST LEGGING-STYLE HIKING PANTS

If you prefer to hike in form-fitting tights but still desire the technical performance of hiking pants, give the Abiskos a try.

Fjallraven designed these tights to be sturdy but breathable. While most leggings aren’t tough enough to withstand the rigors of the backcountry, the Abiskos buck the trend thanks in part to reinforced panels on the knees and butt. These tights are quick to dry and feature useful pockets, as well as a comfy high waist.

What I like most about these hiking tights is how well they hold up to excessive use and abuse.

Patagonia Quandary

If you’re looking for the optimal blend of performance and style, look no further. Patagonia designed the Quandarys from high-quality nylon and spandex. These pants are tough but lightweight and featured articulated knees and a gusseted crotch. Their classy, clean look makes them the best option for wearing as often in town as you would want to out on the trail. Features include drop-in front pockets and one zippered side pocket.

What I like most about the Patagonia Quandary hiking pants is the tilt-in tab and snap feature that allows you to quickly roll up and keep the cuffs in place.

In addition to being water repellent, this pant offers a roll-up feature to turn the long pant legs into capris to keep you cool and stylish in warm weather, while the bottoms stay dry in soggy conditions. And with the added benefit of articulated knees, you can run, jump, sit, or climb on any adventure!

Arc'teryx Gamma Lt

BEST FOR: COOL WEATHER HIKES

This pant is well worth the investment. With fabric made to repel water to keep you dry in the rain and highly breathable material to keep you dry from sweat, this pant is ideal even in colder weather. An adjustable pant drawstring cuff also allows for this pant to roll-up in warm and wet weather to keep your bottoms cool and dry.

A built-in belt will give the lady a flattering fit with no gaping behind. And if you find yourself in early morning fog or dusky conditions, the Arc’teryx logo of this pant is reflective to let your fellow trailmates always know where you are.

Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Hike

  • Thigh Slash Pockets For Secure Storage
Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Hike

BEST FOR: THE HIKER-CLIMB GIRL

The Chockstone pant is made with a four-way stretch material, allowing for the best fit and comfort. The extra stretch will even provide the comfort and freedom of movement should you decide to rock climb along your hike. With all the stretchiness, those thigh slash pockets can even hold a cellphone.

The added feature of a removable belt prevents any sagging around the waist and gives you the option to take it off when you don’t need it (so it doesn’t get damaged in the wash, for example). And for warm and wet days, the ankle hem cinch cord allows you to roll these babies up to prevent them from getting wet and dirty.

The North Face Wandur Hike

Specs
  • Closure: Zip Fly with Snap
  • Fabric: Nylon/Elastane
  • UPF: None
  • Waterproof Type: Quick Drying
Features
  • Button Tab Provides for Roll-up Height Adjustability
  • Velcro Flap Closure on Left Thigh Pocket for Added Security
  • Belt Loops for Size Adjustability

BEST: ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PANT

As the name says, the North Face Wandur Hike pant is designed for hiking. Designed with FlashDry fabric, moisture will be pushed to the surface, allowing for rapid evaporation, so you’ll never end up wet or cold. With ample pockets – two angled hand pockets and one on the back pocket, the thigh pocket on the left thigh has a velcro closure, so it is easy to drop things in from the top. The right thigh pocket has a reverse-coil zip, for added security for those things you just cannot have falling out out.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HIKING PANTS

COST

Investing in a new pair of hiking pants does not have to break the bank, but do not try to cut corners to save a few bucks! In the long run, having the appropriate pair of pants for your hiking adventure will make all the difference in whether or not you have a positive experience, especially if you encounter foul weather.

MATERIAL

Remember the cardinal rule for all hiking clothing – cotton is rotten. Just like shirts, it is important to consider the materials and fabric types when selecting hiking pants. Choosing a fabric that is durable, but provides some stretch is just as important as choosing a breathable, but warm fabric.

WEATHER RESISTANCE

A pair of pants that is waterproof is impenetrable to water, but most lightweight, hiking softshells will absorb some water in order to provide breathability. In this case, the pants will be categorized as water resistant, meaning they can withstand a certain amount of moisture and not act like a sponge.

Some pants are listed as water repellent, meaning they have coatings that will bead water up, but with heavy rains, the pants will begin to absorb some water. In case of severe wet weather, pants made with a quick-drying material will dry faster than those that are not.

On day trips in more mild conditions, a water resistant pant will be all you need, but on longer days in colder and constantly wet conditions, a water resistant pant may stay damp. In these situations, having a softshell pant that breathes better than a hardshell will work, but you will also want a thin pair of hardshell pants to throw over top to prevent from getting damp and cold. You might want to consider including a pair of the best women’s rain pants if you plan on hiking through the rain or in wet conditions regularly.

BREATHABILITY

Breathability is what sets apart hardshell and softshell pants. Because the material of hard shell pants is not penetrable, it will keep moisture in and can cause you to feel clammy and cold when your heart rate lowers, which can be extremely dangerous in the mountains. Softshells allow some air flow while still providing water and wind resistance, so even if you work up a sweat, the moisture can evaporate and you will not catch that chill when you slow your pace.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CUFF

The bottom part of the pants that covers the top of the hiking boot. Can be rolled up in some pants to prevent snagging your pant bottoms on roots or soaking them when walking through puddles or wet grass.

SUN PROTECTION

Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is how well the material protects against the sun. The higher the rating, the less UV will be absorbed, protecting you against the sun more.

WAIST PROFILE

The cut of the pants and how they fit around the waist. Low profile waists leave less bulk around the waist for use with harnesses and backpacks.

WATERPROOF

Material that does not allow for any water to penetrate the material.

WATER RESISTANT

Material that is able to repel water, but not completely impenetrable to water.

BEST FOR: SERIOUS ANGLERS ON A BUDGET

Founded in 1982, Bending Branches has grown to become one of the largest and most well known paddle manufacturers in recent years.  Based in Wisconsin, this renowned brand has justifiably landed several paddles in this guide.

The Angler Classic is low-angle style paddle and is available in multiple sizes to accommodate paddlers of varying sizes and kayak widths. This two-piece, largely fiberglass paddle features a three hole button-snap ferrule (connection point between the two pieces) that allows for adjusting the blade angle to accommodate paddling technique. However, if you’re relatively new to the paddling arena, you can just put it together and hit the water.

If you get your line caught on a branch, the integrated hook retrieval system will allow you to extend your reach while the measuring tape on the shaft of the paddle will allow you to quickly access which fish to keep and which to throw back.

Werner Camano Hooked FG

The midsize fiberglass blades are designed to cater to a wide range of paddlers while the carbon fiber shaft provides a lightweight compliment to this two-piece paddle. This low-angle paddle is ideal for a relaxed and powerful stroke.

The locking system allows for easy opening of the lever to adjust and easily closes to lock in the desired position. The 20 centimeters of adjustment allows for customizing the length to accommodate varying seating positions within a set kayak or use with kayaks of varying widths.

This paddle is available in an array of lengths so the paddler can find the perfect size before ever hitting the water. With every pun intended, this can be your ace on the water and is suited for a day of just cruising or reaching that secret fishing hole.  And like most Bending Branches paddles, this premium product is no exception and includes a hook retrieval notch and a built in tape measure on the shaft, making it a premium paddle for anglers.

Bending Branches Bounce X-Grip

  • Extremely Durable
  • Heavy-Duty Rubber Drip Rings Prevents Water From Splashing Into Your Lap
  • Feathering Is Adjustable 0o or 60o For Extreme Adjustability
Bending Branches Bounce X-Grip

BEST FOR: BUDGET CONSCIOUS ANGLERS

The Bounce X-Grip paddle is a great entry level paddle for the aspiring angler. Don’t let the budget price point deter you from considering this great value paddle. The rigid aluminum shaft will provide a durable and rugged paddle for years of use and abuse.

The plastic blades feature a low-angle design but more importantly provide a durable tool for pushing off docks, rocks, or river bottoms. The heavy duty rubber drip rings deflect the water away from your lap with each stroke.

This two-piece paddle is adjustable to find the perfect blade for your style. And while the Bounce X-Grip doesn’t have any fishing specific features, it’s still a great paddle for getting on the water. Let your fishing skills say the rest.

Bending Branches Angler Scout

Features
  • Built In Tape Measure On The Shaft Allows You To Size Up Your Catch

Bending Branches Angler Scout

BEST FOR: ENTRY LEVEL KAYAK FISHING

Bending Branches offers something for every budget and the Angler Scout is a great entry level kayaking fishing paddle. The durable aluminum shaft will provide years of reliable service while the reinforced fiberglass blades provide an ideal blend of durability and lightweight performance on the water.

The three hole snap-button ferrule (the joint that connects the two parts of the paddle) allows for adjustable feathering angles of 0o and 60o. This two-piece paddle easily separates for efficient storage and travel. Like other models of the Bending Branches paddles in this guide, the Angler Scout also features an integrated measuring tape in the shaft and a hook retrieval notch in the blade, making it an ideal paddle for first-time kayak anglers.

Perception Kayaks Pescador

BEST FOR: FLATWATER FISHING

The Perception Pescador is made by the same company that produces a line of fishing kayaks by the same name. The durable aluminum paddle shaft will insure years of use while the plastic blades will hold up to whatever environment you subject them to on your angling adventures.

This heavy duty paddle is ideal for propelling those heavier and bulkier kayaks. The shaft on this two-piece paddle is adjustable from 230-240 centimeters thanks to the push button ferrule (the joint that connects the two parts of the paddle). The dihedral blade (two planes) promote a smooth and stable ride on a variety of surfaces and conditions. A line hook in the blade can assist in retrieving that snagged line so you’ll never lose your prized lure.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FISHING KAYAK PADDLE

COST

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’ve already purchased a fishing kayak or have plans to do so. In addition to a kayak, a paddle will be one of the next purchases that follows. Price can play a big role in choosing a kayak paddle. Brand, materials, and features can also factor into the cost of the paddle.

PADDLE LENGTH

Choosing the right sized paddle can be one of the easiest decisions to make. The height of the paddler and the width of the boat are two factors that determine the length of the paddle. Taller paddlers will need longer paddles. Wider kayaks, like those typically used for fishing, will also often require longer paddles. As variations can occur between manufacturers, it’s best to refer to each brand’s specific sizing to determine the appropriate size for you.

PADDLE MATERIALS

Just like with kayaks, paddles come in an array of materials. Aluminum and plastic (polypropylene) are typically the heaviest and cheapest options. On the flip side, carbon fiber is the strongest, lightest, and most expensive material used in paddles. Other options include fiberglass and composite (blend of multiple materials). Paddles can be comprised of multiple materials. The blades can be made of one material while the shaft is made from a different material.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BLADE

Kayak paddles contain two blades. The blades provide the surface area on the paddle that allow the paddler to propel themselves through the water.

SHAFT

The shaft is the handle of the paddle and connects the two blades.

FERRULE

A ring or band (often metal) strengthening or forming a joint. In the case of multiple piece paddles, the ferrule is the joint joining the two pieces.

POLYPROPYLENE

Polypropylene is a type of plastic and is harder and more heat resistant than other types.

CARBON FIBER

Carbon fiber is the strongest and lightest paddle material on the market. It also garners the highest price tag.

FEATHERING

Feathering refers to the angle that the blades are offset from one another. Most kayak paddle shafts allow you to rotate them to feather the blades (so they’re not on the same plane). Matched blades are all within the same plane. Depending on the paddle, feathering can be adjusted in set increments or in some cases, feathering can be fine tuned.

DIHEDRAL BLADE

Dihedral blades are easily identifiable by the ribbed separation down the center of the blade. This perpetuates a natural flow of water over both halves of the blade.

ASYMMETRICAL BLADE

As opposed to symmetrical blades, asymmetrical blades are shaped differently in relation to the shaft. When holding the paddle and looking at the blade, the top side is typically longer and tapers downward to the bottom. This design provides a much more efficient paddling style.

A fishing kayak is an ideal option for sportspeople who just want to find solace in nature, perhaps with a companion, without the need for a loud, decked-out motorized boat. The inflatable kind is especially perfect for those who don’t have a lot of extra garage space for a solid model. With its three-layer, impact-resistant material, rigid floor, and superior maneuverability, you may never go back to a solid kayak anyhow.

The kayak already has built-in rod holders and extra bow and stern space in the front and back of the boat, respectively. But you can also mount your own compatible accessories like fish finders, anchor, tackle box, and swivel rod holders on the adjustable mounting brackets or inside the bow (front of the boat). This kayak is a bit shorter than some of the other fishing kayaks on this list, which is perfect for those who don’t like to bring a lot of stuff. It still has ample storage space to fit a tackle box, bait bucket, and the few personal items you must bring along. But if your intention for getting on the water is about nature appreciation and fishing simplicity, then the Spitfire is a top choice.

Lifetime Tahoma 100

Specs

Whenever the fishing bug hits you, drop a line over the side and sit back and take in the view while you wait for signs that something’s biting.

To prepare for your fishing trip, simply inflate the boat with the included hand pump. Slide your cooler, tackle box, and bait under the cargo net and carry the lightweight boat to the water. Paddle the nimble ‘yak down your local slow-moving rivers and streams and cast to your heart’s content.

  • Adjustable Seats (for your comfort)
  • Mesh Storage Pockets and D-Rings Throughout (to hold your essentials)

BEST FOR: DOUBLE-TEAMING THE TEEMING WATERS

This boat is set up for fishing straight out of the box with rod and gear holders along the perimeter. It even has fitting for a trolling motor so you can motorize your ride. Since it packs up into a tidy package, it’s a great boat to keep on-hand at the cabin or campground for when that fishing bug bites. You can access deeper waters than offshore fishing and more out-of-the-way corners than bigger fishing boats with this inflatable ‘yak.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FISHING KAYAK

COST

Every kayak here is under $500, but some are well below that. Remember, you usually get what you pay for. The lower cost kayaks are not only great for those with tight budgets, but also those who only fish occasionally or want to keep an extra fishing boat at their summer getaways.

PASSENGER SIZE

You need to check the weight capacity of these kayaks to ensure they accommodate your weight as well as the weight of any passengers or gear you intend to take along. Most have adjustable foot positions, but they don’t always accommodate people on the taller side. Make sure to sit inside before you decide to keep it or exchange it for a model that fits you better.

FISHING WATERS

Most of the kayaks on this list are suited for slow-moving flatwater fishing. These aren’t appropriate for deep-sea fishing or choppy waters. They are great for navigating all the nooks and crannies in the creek beds that no one else can reach, if that’s where you prefer to fish. If you want to fish in the middle of the lake, you may want to consider purchasing a kayak anchor separately.

TYPE

Every kayak here is either solid or inflatable, sit-inside or sit-on-top. Solid kayaks won’t pop but they take up considerable space. Inflatable kayaks are designed to resist punctures and fold down into portable, bag-sized packages. So, determine your preference of inflatable or solid based on longevity and storage space.

Also consider how you like to sit and how much you’ll be able to move around once you catch a fish. You pretty much have to stay put in a sit-inside kayak, while some sit-on-top models allow you to move around a little, at least on your knees.

FEATURES

Most kayaks intended for fishing come with rod holders and storage areas for your gear. Fishing isn’t the intended primary use for a few of the kayaks on this list, but they can all be converted into fishing boats with a few attachments and adjustments. If cup holders and rod holders are essential for you, then check to make sure they’re included.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FOOTRESTS

Kayaks usually have either movable pegs or molded footrests where you can brace your feet while you paddle. If you’re on the short or taller end, you want to make sure the foot pegs accommodate your size for a more comfortable ride. Check out this handy article to find out how to find the right fit for you.

NOSE

In marine terminology, the front of a boat is often referred to as the nose, bow, or prow. The nose shape affects how the boat enters the water.

STERN

The common term for the back of the boat is the stern. The stern design affects maneuverability and stability.

HULL

The hull is the name for the bottom of the kayak. The hull shape affects speed and stability. Flat-bottom hulls offer the most stability but they ride slower whereas deeper V hulls feel a little more tipsy but can move fast. You can find a more detailed explanation of hull design here.

CHINE

A chine is the angle the hull makes where it meets the sides of the boat. A multi-chine hull has step-like graduated chines that provide a nice balance between stability and speed.

SKEG

Also known as a rudder or fin, a skeg is a small fin that gets attached to the bottom of the kayak. The skegs help you keep the kayak riding straight when the wind is pushing against you. Inflatable kayaks, in particular, get pushed around by crosswinds and a skeg works against that push.

The sleek design provides exceptional maneuverability and speed in a variety of conditions.

In addition to its agility on the water, the Tarpon also has a multitude of features that make it ideal for fishing or just ditching the rod and tackle for a day on the water. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A FISHING KAYAK

STYLE

While fishing from a kayak is possible in any boat, there are a multitude of options on the market that are specifically designed and outfitted for angling on the water. Choosing the right model for your needs can involve a variety of criteria including where you intend to use it primarily, your budget, and your style preferences. You’ll want to consider where you plan to fish the most and whether or not you prefer to stand while casting when making your decision about which fishing kayak to buy off our list above.

While it is possible to use an inflatable boat for fishing, we limited our kayaks for this guide to rigid models for their durability. We also chose only sit-on-top models as they are more likely to allow the possibility to stand while casting. Rigid sit-on-top kayaks are also easy to get in and out of and their superior stability makes the transition from sitting to standing nearly seamless.

SIZE

The size of the boat typically dictates how easy it is to handle, how stable the kayak will be on the water, and the number of paddlers it will accommodate. Solo boats only have one seat while tandem boats can accommodate two passengers. Longer boats are generally narrower and track easier under a variety of conditions while shorter boats tend to be wider and offer greater stability.

Several of the boats in this guide are designed for standup fishing and thus are wider for added stability while standing. Pay attention to the length and width listed for each kayak and consider where you’ll be paddling and how you prefer to fish to make an informed decision about what size and shape of boat will work best for your needs.

WEIGHT

The boats in this guide are rugged and stable, which means they also tend to be on the heavier side of the spectrum. The kayaks listed above range from 50 – 78 pounds. They are all made of a durable type of plastic, which means they can endure years of constant use with little to no maintenance to the bottom of the boat (the hull).

When deciding which fishing kayak to buy, think about how much you can comfortably carry by yourself, and whether or not you’ll have a partner or friend to help you load and unload the kayak when you go fishing. Also consider how much you weigh and how much gear you plan to carry, and double check those weights with the maximum weight capacity of whichever boat you’re considering purchasing.

Keep in mind that heavier kayaks tend to be more stable on the water and they typically allow you to carry more gear because they also have a higher weight capacity. Lighter kayaks are easier to carry from land to water and back, but they may not be as easy to maneuver on the water. With a lighter-weight boat, you also can’t bring as much extra gear because the weight capacity is less and you don’t want to risk overloading your kayak and possibly sinking before you even reel in your big catch of the day.

PRIMARY USE

Determining the intended use of your kayak can play a role in selecting the ideal model. All of the boats above are designed specifically for fishing, although some of them can double as recreational watercraft if you want to get out on the water without your pole sometimes too.

Think about whether you’d prefer to fish by yourself or with a friend before deciding which kayak is right for you. If you plan to paddle solo, then there are nine options above that fit that criteria. If you are looking to head out on excursions with a friend or family member, the BKC TK122 is the only boat on our list that will get you both out on the water in a single boat.

COST

While there are more expensive boats on the market, we limited this roundup to those that fell below the $1,000 mark. Therefore, all of the boats above can be purchased for that price point.

If your budget is limited, consider what other gear you will need to procure to set off on your kayak fishing adventure. For propelling the kayak through the water, you will need a paddle, and only the Vibe Yellowfin 120 comes with one included in the package. A PFD (personal floatation device), or life jacket, should also be included in your kit every time you hit the water.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HULL

The bottom of the kayak. A well defined hull will track better in the water and therefore move more quickly across the surface. A wider hull will provide greater stability.

STERN

The back of the kayak is called the stern.

BOW

The front of the kayak is called the bow.

MOLDED-IN

The boats in this guide are all made of heavy duty plastic. A plastic mold is used to create the shape of the kayak. When the plastic is poured into the mold, cup holders, rod holders, and tank wells are created as part of the boat’s construction, so each of these features are considered to be “molded-in.”

INTEGRATED TRACK SYSTEM

Multiple boats on the list above come with track systems that will accommodate fishing accessories that are sold separately. These can include additional drink holders, rod holders, and fish finders.

STORAGE HATCH

In addition to the tank wells which are located on the outer surface of the kayak’s deck, storage hatches are compartments located within the boat that allow for additional gear storage.

BUNGEE DECK LACING

Gear is easily secured in the molded-in tank wells by means of bungee deck lacing, which simply consists of elastic cords stretched between fixed points.

BEST OVERALL WOMEN’S HIKING SHOE

When you need a technical hiking shoe that outperforms in every category, take a look at La Sportiva’s Spire GTXs.

Altra is a running-centric company that has become increasingly popular among thru-hikers and the latest iteration of the Lone Peak is a great example of why. The Lone Peak 5s weigh in at just 1lb 2.4 ounces for the pair, making for the lightest pair of hikers on our list. The toe box is designed to allow the toes to relax and spread out as they would naturally and GaiterTrap hook-and-loop tabs allow you to secure your gaiters to your shoes to keep out dirt and debris.

What I like most about the Altra Lone Peak 5s is how well the thick heel cushioning reduces impact on your joints when landing.

You may even find yourself (like many others) wanting to wear these shoes around the house and out for errands, just because of how comfortable they are.

It’s important to put extra emphasis on the comfort factor if you have no time to break in your hiking shoes. While hard sole hiking shoes can be great, they can take some time to get used to. If you jump right into hiking without breaking them in first, they could cause painful blisters.

The Merrell Chameleon Limit 7’s, though, will have you walking on a cloud the very first time you put them on, thanks to their built-in air cushion and molded arch support. These features work together to provide a soft and supportive walking surface so you can hike inside and out without ever wanting to take these shoes off your feet!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S HIKING SHOES

GRIP

Grip is a key factor to consider when purchasing any outdoor adventure shoe since it is actually a matter of safety. If you plan to hike something steep, having a good grippy sole means traversing steeper terrain will be a lot easier, and a lot less dangerous, as well. When looking for a shoe with good grip, check out the material it is made with. Vibram rubber is a great choice for good grip. You should also consider the tread, which is the design on the bottom of the shoe. Deeper tread design generally provides better grip than shallow or even flat treads.

VERSATILITY AND TERRAIN

Hiking shoes are generally quite versatile because they are more appropriate for the trails than sneakers are, but they are not quite as evolved as a hiking boot. However, each pair of hiking shoes is designed for a slightly different purpose.

Be sure to consider what kind of hiking you will be doing (think: steep terrain versus flat nature trails, walking versus running, dry versus wet, etc.). Use this info to select a shoe that is specifically designed for the types of terrain you will be traveling the most. If you’re not sure if you should purchase a hiking shoe or hiking boot, you can check out this handy guide from REI: Hiking Boots Vs. Trail Runners: The Great Debate.

SUPPORT

Many of the shoes we recommend in this article feature special support technology. If you are someone who has had an ankle or foot injury, place extra emphasis on the importance of this feature. Conversely, if you plan to use your hiking shoes mostly for flat nature walks, ankle support may not be as vital.

BREATHABILITY

Many hiking shoes are designed to be super breathable and keep your feet cool on long treks. Be aware if this is best for you, though. Breathability sometimes means that the shoe is not waterproof, as it may utilize light, meshy material to let your feet breathe. If you will be hiking in drier, hotter climates, breathability is key. However, if you live in a cooler, wetter area, you may want to go with something that is a little heavier but will keep you dry.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CLOSURE

The mechanism(s) that the shoe has to allow you to close it around your foot.

OUTSOLE

The material on the very bottom part of the shoe, important for determining grip.

UPPER

The part of the shoe that surrounds and covers the sides and top part of your feet.

3D MOLDED HEEL COUNTER

A special design at the back of the shoe used to hold your heel comfortably in place.

A protective piece of material (often rubber or steel) on the front edge of your shoe.

FOOTBED

The part of your shoe where your foot sits. A good footbed provides support and comfort.

LINING

The lining of the shoe touches your foot or sock, and is often designed with a specific feature in mind, such as allowing your feet to breathe or locking out moisture.
