  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Down Strategically Placed Where You Want The Most Warmth
  • Soft Lining In The Collar For Extra Comfort When You’re Bundled Up
  • Down-filled Hood Protects Your Head From The Elements

BEST OVERALL DOWN JACKET

The Arc’teryx Cerium LT keeps you toasty warm and dry thanks to a proprietary Down Composite Mapping system which places down insulation where you need the most warmth and adds synthetic insulation in areas that are more prone to getting wet. A water repellent finish on the exterior adds extra protection against precipitation.

The hood of the Cerium LT is down-filled, low-profile, and adjustable so it hits the sweet spot of being cozy while staying out of your field of vision. The collar has a soft lining for comfort when it’s zipped up and close to your face, and elastic on the cuffs keep your wrists from getting cold.

REI Co-op 650 2.0

Specs
  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Recycled nylon shell fabric treated with a durable water repellent finish
  • 650-fill-power down is lightweight and has an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio
  • Drawcord-adjustable hem seals in warmth
REI Co-op 650 2.0

BEST FOR: YOU LADIES ON A BUDGET

If you’re unsure whether or not your adventures are going to warrant an expensive down jacket or you only need something warm to wear on a few trips a year, give the 2.0 a go — it may be just what you’re looking for.

REI has been building a brand for the average adventurer for decades which has resulted in the creation of a line-up of high-quality, affordable products — and the 650 2.0 down jacket is no exception. The 2.0 features 650 fill power down, a lightweight packable size, and an unbelievable $100 price tag. During its most recent iteration, REI crafted larger baffles to increase this jacket’s warmth and added a DWR finish to help keep you drier longer.

What I like most about the 650 2.0 is that it stuffs easily into its own pocket for packing. Compressibility is very important to me — especially on longer trips.

Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 2

Specs
  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Ultra Lightweight Yet Still Very Warm
  • Soft Elastic Cuffs Keep Wrists From Getting Cold
  • Packs Down Into Its Own Pocket With A Carabiner Loop
Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer

BEST FOR: LIGHTWEIGHT & PACKABLE

The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer is so light you’ll hardly feel its presence, just like a ghost. Despite its lightness, it will keep you toasty warm with water-resistant down insulation and water repellent ripstop outer fabric. The wrist cuffs are lined with soft elastic to keep out the cold, and the hem can be adjusted with a drawcord.

The Ghost Whisperer is great for layering and travel, since you can simply pack it down into its own zippered pocket and stuff it in a bag or use the carabiner loop to attach it to your harness or hang it outside your pack.

Arc’teryx Cerium SV Hoody

Specs

  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Great warmth-to-weight ratio
  • Moisture-resistant outer face fabric
  • Down Contour baffles enhance loft for efficient warmth

BEST FOR: ADVENTURING IN RAIN, SHINE, OR SNOW

If you’re looking for something to carry you through the coldest parts of your next winter adventure, consider the Cerium SV.

Arc’teryx designed this down jacket with the serious winter loving adventurer in mind. Every feature is designed to add degrees of warmth — although it’s the thoughtfully designed StormHood that really helps it stand out from others in its class. In addition, the brand integrated synthetic down in to high moisture areas, like the armpits and shoulders.

What I like most about the SV Hoody is the innovative down contour baffling that optimizes warmth while requiring the use of less material.

Patagonia Down Sweater Hoodie

  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Shell & Lining Treated With Durable Water Repellent
  • Wide Variety Of Color Options

patagonia down sweater hoodie

BEST FOR: ALL-AROUND USE

When your top priorities are durability and comfort, you need look no further than Patagonia’s Down Hoodie.

Crafted from ethically traced down and 100% recycled polyester, this jacket is by far the most sustainable of our picks on this list. Patagonia integrated heavy duty polyester, which adds a bit of weight, but makes this jacket nearly indestructible in terms of down jacket alternatives. However, thanks to the high quality down and thoughtful baffle design this jacket still manages to pack down small — despite the thick material.

Rab Microlight Alpine

Specs
  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Hydrophobic Down Continues To Insulate Even When Wet
  • Down-filled Hood With Peaked Brim Keeps Your Head Warm & Dry
  • Nylon Lining Provides Comfort & Prevents Feathers From Poking You
Rab Microlight Alpine

BEST FOR: WET WEATHER

If your hikes take you out in wet and snowy weather, the Rab Microlight Alpine will protect you from the elements and keep you dry and warm. The light outer fabric is treated with durable water repellent, so rain and snow won’t soak through. But even if they do, the down insulation is hydrophobic and will maintain its loft and insulation despite getting wet. The jacket is not fully waterproof though, so don’t expect it to withstand a total downpour.

The Microlight Alpine also has a fully insulated hood to keep your head cozy, and a peaked brim which prevents precipitation from getting into your eyes.

Outdoor Research Illuminate

Specs
  • Water Resistant: No
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Soft Interior Lining Offers Extra Cozy Comfort
  • Key Clip In Pocket So You’ll Never Misplace Your Keys
  • Media-Compatible Chest Pocket For Listening To Music Or Podcasts

BEST FOR: LAYERING

The Outdoor Research Illuminate Down Hoody is a lightweight midlayer that can keep you warm in cool weather and be worn under thicker outer layers when conditions get colder. A soft interior lining is cozy and prevents feathers from the down fill poking through. Another handy feature is a key clip in one of the pockets so you never have that dreaded feeling of wondering where you put your keys when you get back to your car at the end of a long adventure.

The Illuminate is not the warmest down jacket you can buy, but it is a great option if you already have a heavier parka or hard shell you can pair it with when temps turn frigid.

Cotopaxi Fuego

Specs
  • Water Resistant: Yes
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Snug Scuba-Style Hood Keeps Your Head Cozy
  • Included Stuff Sack So You Can Carry It In Your Pack Just In Case
  • Slim Fit For A Streamlined, Stylish Look

BEST FOR: MOUNTAIN TOWN STYLE

When you want to combine style and warmth, look no further than the Cotopaxi Fuego. The slim fit of this jacket is very flattering and the color blocking on the chest adds a cool design element, so the Fuego will take you from the trail to the town bar in style.

But the Cotopaxi Fuego is more than just looks. It’s insulated with water-resistant down, to maintain heat even if you get caught in the snow, and the cuffs, hem, and hood all have elastic to keep warmth in and cold out. The Fuego also includes a stuff sack for taking it on the go.

The North Face Summit L3

Specs
  • Water Resistant: No
  • Hood: Yes
Features

BEST FOR: ALPINE HIKING

The North Face Summit L3 is a down jacket designed to keep up with all of your adventures in the alpine. It is extremely warm with high-quality down insulation, and the outer ripstop fabric is extra durable in high-wear areas. The Summit L3 is also made for movement with the sleeves cut in a way that provides you with full mobility, and a slim fit that can easily be layered.

A longer than usual hem provides more coverage and extra warmth where you want it, while the adjustable drawstring on the hem can be clipped away to prevent it from getting caught on any obstacles. Also, the zippers of The North Face Summit L3 are specially designed to be easy to use while you’re wearing gloves.

Patagonia Silent

Specs
  • Water Resistant: No
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Snaps Over Zipper Provide Extra Protection From Wind
  • Lined Side Pockets Close With Snaps
  • Stretch Material Lets You Move

BEST FOR: EVERYDAY WEAR

Once you put the Patagonia Silent Down jacket on, you won’t want to take it off until the temperatures rise again. The stretchy material of the jacket moves with you wherever you go, while the recycled down fill keeps you toasty warm at all times. Plus, the snap buttons that cover the zipper offer substantial protection from the wind. The side handwarmer pockets also close with a snap for easy access, especially when wearing gloves.

Though this jacket doesn’t have a hood, the stand up collar provides warmth at the neck, and when combined with a beanie or wool hat, you can customize your look and still stay warm.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING DOWN JACKETS FOR WOMEN

A down jacket is such a useful piece of outdoor gear that you really want to spend the time to make sure you pick the right one for you, which will depend largely on the activities you do and the weather you do them in. REI gives great advice on how to choose proper outerwear for your activities, while Field & Stream offers some tips for how to choose the right down jacket.

WARMTH

When you’re picking a down jacket for women, you’ll want to consider the conditions you’ll be wearing it in. If you plan to take part in a lot of alpine adventures, you’ll want to make sure to get an extra warm down jacket. But if you live in a more mild climate and don’t do a lot of summit hikes above treeline, you can probably get by with a slimmer more lightweight puffy option.

Also, think about whether you plan to layer the jacket because you might not need as much warmth if you’re always going to be wearing it over or under something else. But if you want it to standalone, make sure it can handle the cold.

WATER PROTECTION

Down jackets are never completely waterproof, but some can handle moisture better than others. Many down jackets for women feature an outer layer that is treated with durable water repellent (DWR), so water beads up instead of soaking in. If you spend a lot of time in rainy or snowy weather, you will benefit from a jacket filled with hydrophobic down, which is designed to continue to provide insulation even if it gets damp.

HOOD

Do you need a hood on your down jacket? It depends. Obviously, a hood will provide much needed warmth for your head, but if you’re planning to wear your down jacket with other outer layers which already have hoods, it might feel bulky. If you don’t adventure in super cold conditions, a beanie or wool hat might be plenty of head coverage, making a hood unnecessary.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

WATER REPELLENT

Not completely waterproof, but the outer layer has a treatment to keep moisture from soaking through.

HYDROPHOBIC DOWN

The down has been treated to resist moisture and continue to insulate while wet.

BAFFLES

Fabric that separates pockets of down to keep it in place.

PLACKET

An extra layer of fabric that covers the opening of the jacket.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING RAIN PANTS

FABRIC

The fabric of your rain pant is arguably the most important feature to check when picking out your new pair of rain pants

Nylon is a common fabric, and ripstop nylon is a step above standard nylon that will help make sure you pants don’t rip. Nylon does tend to make a crunching noise as you hike, but you stop noticing it after a mile or so.

Pants that have a Gore Tex PacLite membrane basically mean that they’ve been coated with a highly weatherproof guard that is softer and more comfortable than nylon or polyester. This means that the pants will certainly keep you dry, and are packable, so they won’t take up much room in your pack. The Adventure Junkies think pants with a Gore Tex PacLite membrane are the way to go, but they can oftentimes be a bit more expensive.

Polyester is also a common fabric you see listed in this article. Polyester is usually accompanied by a cheaper price than nylon or Gore Tex, but is still does the job of being waterproof. It’s a bit of a thinner material than nylon, and can be noisy when hiking, but it does the job of keeping you dry and that’s the most important factor.

TYPE OF WATERPROOFING

Several of the pants featured in this article are treated with different types of waterproofing to make sure the pants are weather resistant but also comfortable.

The most common type of waterproofing in this article is Gore Tex PacLite. This type of waterproofing is completely weatherproof and comfortable, while still being packable and lightweight.

Patagonia uses a H2No Water Treatment that is their proprietary technology to ensure their rain gear is dually waterproof and breathable.

PerTex Shield is another term featured in this article describing the type of waterproofing. PerTex Shield is resistant to rain and snow, windproof, and highly breathable.

Read more here about how to pick out rain gear and for tips on hiking in the rain.

WEIGHT

The weight of your rain pants can be a big factor for someone going on a long backpacking trip, where every ounce counts.

Figuring out what exactly you will be using your rain pants for, and then finding a pair that fits the features you want at the weight you’re looking for, is the way to go.

For example, if you are going to be using the rain pants for hiking as well as winter sports, you may want a pant with a wider boot leg or straps that can attach to the bottom of your boots.

COST

A pair of rain pants won’t set you back as much as a rain jacket will, but some of them can still be rather expensive.

Similar to a rain jacket, once you buy a pair of rain pants, you shouldn’t have to replace them for a long time. Keep this in mind when you are dishing out some cash for rain pants.

POCKETS

Pockets are a popular feature for rain pants because it’s nice to have extra storage compartments at your access. Need a place to throw your keys? Stick them in your pockets. Looking for a midday snack? What better place than a pocket.

Some pockets are zip shut and others are not. If you are one who puts precious items in you pants, such as your keys or wallet, you might be looking for extra security a zipper provides. If not, you could probably go without.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

RIPSTOP NYLON

Ripstop nylon is a type of nylon sewn with a reinforcing technique to provide a quality garment that won’t rip or shred easily. This makes nylon a great choice for rain gear, because oftentimes you can be hiking through rocky terrain, and with ripstop nylon you will have the security that your clothes can withstand the wilderness.

GORE TEX

Gore Tex works as a membrane on a garment to prevent it from harsh weather conditions including rain, snow, sleet, hail and others.

Gore Tex is also comfortable. It is softer than nylon or polyester, and it’s breathable material so it won’t leave you drenched in your own sweat at the end of the day.

PACLITE PLUS

A lot of times Gore Tex is paired with PacLite Plus in this article. This makes for not just a waterproof garment, but also a garment that can pack down very small, meaning it is lightweight and it won’t take up much room in your pack. Double bonus.

WATERTIGHT ZIPPERS

Watertight zippers are the bees knees. They ensure that water won’t get in between your zips, and are easy to zip up and down.

REINFORCED INSTEPS

Reinforced insteps means that your rain pants have an extra layer of fabric where it is needed most: the bottom of your pants. A lot of times when hiking through rough terrain, pants can shred easily on the rocks/dirt/debris you are stepping over. Reinforced insteps make it a little tougher to shred by adding an extra layer of security.

SIDE ZIPS

Most of the pants in this article come with side zips. Their main goal? To make it easy to put your hiking boots/trail runners on and take them off. Having the ability to zip up the leg of your pants, put on your shoes, and then zip down the leg of your pants helps tremendously.

H2No PERFORMANCE STANDARD WATERPROOF BREATHABLE FABRIC

This is Patagonia’s waterproofing fabric material. It is soft, breathable, and durable, and is used on most of their rain gear.

ARTICULATED KNEES

Articulated knees are a big bonus, because no one likes stiff pants when you’re hiking. This gives your pants the ability to move with you when you step, instead of holding your leg back in a stiff position.

Articulated knees means the designer prepared for you to bend your leg, and designed the fabric in a way that will benefit your knee when it’s bending.

GUSSETED CROTCH

A gusseted crotch means the crotch of your pants has a diamond like pattern of fabric that lays over the seams. This reinforces the crotch area of your pants, so that you can sit criss cross applesauce without a worry of your pants splitting on you.

When you’re enjoying a nice sunny day in the great outdoors, it’s important to remember that Mother Nature can change her mind in an instant. This is why having the best lightweight rain jacket for women should be a top priority for your backcountry gear list.

For backpackers and hikers alike, it’s common to want gear that performs well, but is also lightweight. You don’t want to add extra ounces to your back when you can have a jacket with the same features for a lesser weight. That’s why we think having a lightweight rain jacket is the way to go.

A durable, weather proof rain jacket should keep you dry amid a snow or rain storm in the mountains. And unlike other gear essentials that you’ll have to replace annually, like shoes, a rain jacket should last you for years.

Listed below are a range of rain jackets we think you’ll like. Made of different fabrics and extending different lengths, these jackets are quite different, but share one thing in common: they are all lightweight options.

BEST FOR:  THE LONG DISTANCE HIKER

Arc’teryx has a reputation in the backcountry community for having the sleekest, lightest, and most durable gear for good reason. The Beta SL Rain Jacket is no exception.

The design of this jacket provides coverage for everywhere you need it. The back of the jacket runs to your hip length, to make sure you have waterproof coverage all the way down your back. The sleeves of this jacket are long, so you don’t have to worry about your sleeves being too short when you extend your arms. The hood of this jacket has an adjustable halo cord, so you can tailor the fit of the hood to your preference and make sure rain stays out of your eyes.

The feel of the Gore Tex material this jacket is made of is soft, extremely durable, and fully waterproof. You can bet your bottom dollar that this jacket will keep you dry, and it won’t rip on you, even when you’re conquering the toughest of rock scrambles.

All that said, this is a solid option for a lightweight rain jacket, if you can afford it. Arc’teryx gear comes with a steep price tag, but if you can swing it, you will thank yourself for years to come.

BEST FOR: THE ULTRALIGHT HIKER

The Outdoor Research Helium II rain jacket is the lightest rain jacket featured by the Adventure Junkies, so if weight is at the top of your rain jacket priority list, this is your jacket.

This product is truly a work of art. It’s incredible that Outdoor Research was able to design a rain jacket that has a chest pocket and adjustable features while still only weighing about five ounces. You can adjust the cuffs, hood, and waist of this coat to achieve maximum comfort even in the rain.

You can guarantee you will be dry while sporting this stylish rain jacket on the trail. The Pertex Shield water repellent treatment this jacket has is highly weather resistant and breathable. The taped seams will double as a water treatment for this jacket, and will ensure your belongings inside your pockets will be dry in a rainstorm.

Although the coat advertises to be hip length, it runs a bit shorter than that. So if you definitely want coverage over your hips when you’re wearing a raincoat, you may think twice about this jacket.

Black Diamond StormLine Stretch

BEST FOR: THE MOUNTAIN CLIMBER

Black Diamond’s StormLine Stretch Rain Jacket is a good option for the versatile outdoor athlete.

The hood of this rain jacket is compatible with a climbing helmet, making it a great option for hiking, backpacking, and climbing. Weighing in at just under half a pound, it’s pretty unbelievable that Black Diamond was able to include pit zips and adjustable cufflink and waist drawstrings into this jacket design.

Other than being a lightweight option, this jacket can also pack into the left pocket of the jacket, so it’s extremely packable and will never need a seperate stuff sack. This jacket compliments a woman’s body by not being too tight, but rather providing extra space where it’s needed and slimming in areas where it’s not.

The nylon this product is made of isn’t as comfortable as a product made with a Gore Tex membrane, and can be a bit stiff at times, but is fully waterproof.

Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow

Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow

BEST FOR: THE MULTISPORT HIKER

Looking for a rain jacket that’s versatile for the trail and for your everyday activities? Patagonia’s Stretch Rainshadow Jacket should be your go-to.

This packable, lightweight rain jacket echoes Patagonia’s dedication to sustainability, and is made out of all recycled products, including yarns constructed of discarded fishing nets.

Patagonia uses a 2.5 Layer H2No Performance fabric for this jacket. This fabric is lightweight, durable, breathable, windproof, and waterproof. Patagonia doubles this fabric with a water repellant treatment, protecting you from rain and snow in the backcountry.

This rain jacket has pit zips to help ventilate while you’re on the go, whether that be logging miles in the mountains or walking in a busy city on your way to work. The chest pocket is a great addition to this jacket, to store a protein bar while you’re hiking or your wallet when you’re running errands.

Arc’teryx Beta AR

Specs
  • Fabric: Ripstop Gore-Tex
  • Length: Hip Length
  • Weight: 13.2 ounces
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: 3-Layer Gore Tex Pro Waterproof Breathable Laminate
  • Windproof: Yes
  • Ventilation: Pit Zips
Features
  • Fully Taped Seams
  • Reinforced Shoulder and Armpit Areas
  • Pit Zippers
  • Adjustable Cuffs and Waist
  • Halo Adjuster Provides Fitted Hood
  • WaterTight Front Zipper

BEST FOR: THE MOUNTAINEER

Another five star rain jacket from Arc’teryx, the Beta AR Jacket is similar to the Zeta SL Rain Jacket, but with more bells and whistles.

This product is made with 3-layer Gore Tex, and to be honest, waterproofing material just doesn’t get better than that. Different than the Zeta SL, this jacket has a collar that circumferences the neck of the jacket, providing a bit more coverage and warmth amid a storm.

This jacket also has pit zips that help with ventilation, and all of the zippers (pit zippers, front pocket zippers, and the jacket zipper) are taped and watertight, meaning they won’t break on you. And, when fully zipped, the jacket will provide complete coverage from rain and snow.

The Beta AR jacket performs extremely well in very cold weather conditions, so if you’re hiking in the alpine, this is the jacket that will keep you warm.

Again, a product of this superiority comes with a hefty price tag. But know if you buy one of these, you won’t have to buy another for a very long time.

REI Co-op Rainier

Specs
  • Fabric: Recycled Ripstop Nylon
  • Length: Hip Length
  • Weight: 11.4 ounces
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: 2.5 Layer Waterproof Breathable Laminate
  • Windproof: Yes
  • Ventilation: Pit Zips
Features
  • Shields Wind Up To 60 MPH
  • Water Repellant Treatment
  • Adjustable Cuffs and Waist
  • Packs Into Pocket
  • Halo Adjuster Provides Fitted Hood

BEST FOR: THE BACKPACKER

REI’s Rainier Rain jacket is a comfortable, lightweight option that won’t take up much space in your pack or make a dent in your wallet. It’s also a sustainable option so you can feel good about helping to reduce waste in the environment because this rain jacket is made with recycled material.

This rain jacket is a highly lightweight and packable option because it packs into the left pocket of the coat. The collar of this raincoat is also lined with a soft material, creating a pillow-like texture for your neck to rest on throughout your day.

The Rainier Rain Jacket comes with a velcro hood and velcro cufflink adjusters, so you can personalize the fit of this coat to your liking. Pit zips will help you increase airflow when you’re working hard putting in the days or miles on the trail.

This jacket comes in several dual-color combos and weighs in at 11.4 ounces.

Outdoor Research Aspire

Specs
  • Fabric: Polyester
  • Length: Hip Length
  • Weight: 12.4 ounces
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: Gore Tex Water Breathable Laminate
  • Windproof: Yes
  • Ventilation: Pit Zips
Features
  • Torso Vents Increase Ventilation
  • Packs Into Pocket
  • Adjustable Cuffs and Waist
  • Two Way Front Zipper Offers Adjustability
  • Halo Adjuster Provides Fitted Hood

BEST FOR: THE BEGINNING BACKPACKER

Outdoor Research’s Aspire Jacket is a sure thing when it comes to battling rain storms in the mountains.

The Gore Tex membrane of this jacket is waterproof and breathable, repelling water while being lightweight and comfortable. Several adjustable options on this jacket, including the cuffs, hood, and waist, make it a great option to personally customize the fit of your coat.

This jacket has a two-way front zipper making it a breeze to get in and out of, even when you just need to quickly access your headphone cord that’s stored inside the jacket. Also a very lightweight option weighing just less than a pound, this jacket folds into its own pocket, guaranteeing it won’t take up much space in your pack.

This jacket runs a bit large, which isn’t always a bad thing. It means you have room to wear your puffy or thermal layer underneath on cold mornings, but keep this in consideration when making your selection as it will add extra weight.

Arc’teryx Codetta

Specs
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Length: Thigh Length
  • Weight: 14.8 ounces
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: 3-Layer Gore Tex
  • Windproof: Yes
  • Ventilation: Core Vents
Features
  • Shaped Cuffs, Back, and Underarms Increase Mobility
  • Trenchcoat Design Provides Full Coverage
  • Two Way Front Zipper
  • Watertight Zippers
  • Halo Adjuster Provides Fitted Hood
Arc'teryx Codetta

BEST FOR: THE INTERNATIONAL HIKER

Arc’Teryx designed the Codetta Coat for the traveler who enjoys a little extra coverage when it comes to a rain jacket.

The length of this rain jacket is similar to a trench coat, extending to the top of the thighs. But it doesn’t have the typical weight of a trench coat, weighing in at a couple ounces less than a pound.

This jacket is structured and flattering, and Arc’Teryx doesn’t lack any details when it comes to this product, with stylized and shaped cufflinks, collar, hood, and back. It also comes in several beautiful colors, including shorepine green and ginger root.

The back of this jacket has a pleat near the back of the knee that will allow you to sit on a bike seat without having to pull the jacket up over your hips. The two way zipper on the front makes it easy to get in and out of.

Similar to other Arc’Teryx products, this lightweight rain jacket will cost you a pretty penny, but will last you for years and will be your favorite jacket in your closet.

The North Face Venture 2

Specs
  • Fabric: Ripstop Nylon
  • Length: Hip Length
  • Weight: 1 lb
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: 2.5 Layer Waterproof Breathable Laminate
  • Windproof: Yes
  • Ventilation: Pit Zips
Features
  • Pit Zips
  • Halo Adjuster Provides Fitted Hood
  • Packs Into Pocket
  • Adjustable Cuffs and Waist

BEST FOR: THE BEGINNING HIKER

The North Face Venture 2 Rain Jacket is a solid, affordable option for someone who is breaking into outdoor recreation.

This coat has a relaxed fit, so you can fit a thermal layer or puffy underneath it easily. It comes in endless color options too, so your favorite color is sure to be available.

The relaxed fit of this jacket is also customizable, with adjustable cufflinks, hood, and waist. The pit zips will help with ventilation while you’re on the go. The North Face’s Venture 2 packs down to fit into the left pocket of the jacket, so you know it won’t take up much room in your closet or your pack.

Take note that this jacket won’t provide you the level of warmth some other jackets featured in this article will, because the nylon it’s made of is a bit thin.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A LIGHTWEIGHT RAIN JACKET

TYPE OF WATERPROOFING

The rain jackets featured in this article come with a multitude of waterproofing treatments. Let’s break them down a bit.

Gore Tex is the most foolproof option for water resistant fabric. This is because Gore Tex is not only fully waterproof (meaning it keeps you dry in snow or rain), but it also allows vapor to pass through. So while you’re hiking in the rain and sweating from the miles, it will breathe out your sweat while keeping you dry.

Waterproof Breathable Laminate is also a great option because it’s fully waterproof. Laminate is also very breathable, durable, and lightweight. Two-Layer Laminate means that the laminate is layered inside of the jacket as well as the outside of the jacket, providing double the coverage.

Coatings on rain jackets are not as full proof as Gore Tex or Laminate, but can often still be waterproof and specialize in being ultralight. So if you’re going hiking somewhere where it doesn’t rain often but you still want some coverage, this could be a good option for you.

Check out this article to learn more about types of waterproofing.

WEIGHT

This article is about lightweight rain jackets, so we understand that weight is an important factor in picking out bad weather gear.

When deciding on a weight for a rain jacket, it’s important to determine what you’ll be using the jacket for. Will you be taking this on a long-distance hike across the country, where every single ounce counts, or will you be taking it with you on day hikes where rain could be in the forecast?

If your pack is going to have ten pounds of other gear in it, it might be more important for you to have a more lightweight rain jacket than if you’re going on a day hike.

It’s also important to decide which features you’re not willing to compromise on. Some rain jackets featured in this article are extremely lightweight, but don’t have adjustable cufflinks.

Would that bother you? Are you willing to compromise that for a few ounces? The choice is up to you.

PRICE

A solid rain jacket is going to be an item you’re likely going to spend $100+ on. BUT if you get the right coat, you shouldn’t have to replace it for years.

A rain jacket is a vital piece of gear for the outdoors. Being wet in the mountains is not only uncomfortable, but it can be dangerous at alpine heights or extremely low temperatures. It’s important to have a coat that is water resistant and keeps you warm and shielded from the wind.

See what you can finance for a rain coat, then look for something in your price range that offers features you want and go from there.

ADJUSTABILITY

Most of the rain jackets in this article can be tailored to a fit you feel most comfortable in. This can be very helpful with a rain jacket, because oftentimes rain coats can be a bit bulky, so tailoring them to your body is a great feature.

Adjustable cufflinks, waist, and hood will all ensure your raincoat will keep you as dry as possible while also performing best for you. No one wants a raincoat that hinders their vision, so having an adjustable hood is possibly the most important adjustable feature.

Having an adjustable waist will help you feel safe and secure in your jacket, and adjustable cufflinks help keep water off your arms when you’re hiking with trekking poles.

All of this being said, you will definitely make it with a jacket that doesn’t have adjustable features, as long as it’s still fully waterproof.

POCKETS

All of the jackets in this article come with two side pockets for your hands or storing gear. Some of these rain jackets come with a front chest pocket, a great addition for extra storage.

A chest pocket is a versatile feature for the outdoors or wearing your coat in town, because it’s a good place to throw a bar for a midday snack, or your keys when you’re going grocery shopping.

VENTILATION

Ventilation is important when you’re going to be using your rain jacket to protect you from weather while you’re putting in work in the mountains.

Pit zips are possibly the most favorable ventilation system for a rain jacket, but torso vents, back vents, and chest vents can also help release some of the steam your body builds up from sweat when it’s raining.

Most pit zips and other ventilation areas are accessible with a watertight zipper, or double layer fabric design, making it easy peasy to access the ventilation zones when you need them.

However, ventilation systems cost you ounces, so the more lightweight the jacket, the less ventilation areas are typically available.

Read this article for more about how to pick out rain gear.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HALO ADJUSTER

A halo adjuster can be either a drawstring cord or a velcro fabric adjuster that helps you fit the hood of the jacket to the size of your head. This is beneficial because you don’t want your hood to be so big on you that it covers your eyes, shielding you from the outside.

WATERTIGHT ZIPPER

A watertight zipper means that the zipper won’t let any water in amid a rain or snow storm. These zippers are also durable and function well, meaning they won’t break on you or cause you serious frustration when you’re on the go.

ADJUSTABLE CUFFS AND WAIST

Several of the jackets The Adventure Junkies feature in this article have adjustable cuffs and waist. This means that you can tailor the fit of the cuffs and waist to your liking. If you want a medium sized coat, because you want to wear a puffy underneath it, but you have a small sized waist, an adjustable drawstring will help you out.

TAPED SEAMS

Taped seams means that the jacket simply won’t be coming apart at the seams, because these areas are reinforced with a waterproof material.

REINFORCED AREAS

Shoulders and pits are the areas this article features reinforcement in rain jackets. This means that there is either an extra layer of fabric to provide durability, or a waterproofing treatment has been applied to these areas to ensure you stay dry.

PIT ZIPS

Pit zips are a popular ventilation zone for rain jackets. This means that you can zip the pits open and let all the air and sweat out that accumulates while you’re logging miles. This will keep you cooler than jackets without pit zips. BUT zippers are going to cost you ounces, so if you’re looking for an ultralight rain jacket, it likely doesn’t have this feature.

TWO WAY FRONT ZIPPER

A two way front zipper does exactly as it sounds: zips both up and down. A great option if you regularly access snacks or other things inside of your jacket, or if you enjoy an easy take on and off process.

The fabric is also water and wind resistant to keep the elements out and warmth and dryness in.

The Ferrosi features zippered hand pockets as well as a zippered chest pocket to keep your valuables from falling out on the trail. Thumbholes keep the sleeves in place, and an adjustable hem cord cinches up at the waist.

The Dawn Patrol is a technical piece that serves to blur the line between a soft-shell and a rain shell. It boasts a fleece lining, large internal stash pockets, and a zippered exterior chest pocket.

What I like most about the Dawn Patrol is how backcountry-specific it is.

For the best combination of breathability and durability, this soft-shell tests above the rest.

The Marmot ROM 2.0 is the brand’s latest iteration in its line of highly popular performance apparel, especially designed for climbing and backcountry skiing. Marmot integrated newer Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper fabric into the shell, making for added weather resistance without detecting from its coveted degree of breathability.

What I like most about the Marmot ROM 2.0 is how harness-friendly the pockets are designed to be.

Mountain Hardwear Kor Preshell

  • Thumbholes: No

  • Elastic Keeps Hood, Hem, and Wrist Cuffs in Place

Mountain Hardwear Kor Preshell

BEST FOR: MINIMAL & LIGHTWEIGHT HIKERS

The Mountain Hardwear Kor Preshell is an extra light layer that is made from a proprietary Pertex Quantum Air fabric which manages to be exceptionally breathable while also blocking the chill of wind. It is treated with a durable water resistant coating to repel water if you get caught in an unexpected rainstorm while you’re hiking.

Strategically placed elastic on the hood, hem, and cuffs keep everything in place without constant fiddling. Zippered hand pockets keep your items secure, and the jacket stuffs down small enough to fit into one of the pockets when you’re not wearing it. The Kor Preshell is also designed to fit over base and midlayers, so you can customize your layering system to suit the weather conditions.

The North Face Apex Risor

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb 5.5 oz
  • Hood: No
  • Thumbholes: No
Features
  • Extremely Wind Resistant
  • Fleece Backing for Extra Warmth
  • Forearm Pocket for Keeping Essentials at Arm’s Reach

BEST FOR: WINDY SUMMITS

If you’re hiking to summits above tree line, the North Face Apex Risor will keep you cozy despite the wind you’re bound to encounter. The jacket is made from a proprietary WindWall fabric which prevents external air permeation, and it is backed by a fleece liner for even more insulation. The fabric is also treated to be water resistant if a storm arises and you get caught in the rain.

The hand pockets of the Apex Risor are zippered for security, and instead of a chest pocket, the jacket has a small zippered pocket on the forearm, so you can keep small important items close at hand for easy access.

Marmot Gravity

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb 5.8 oz
  • Hood: No
  • Thumbholes: No
Features
  • Lots of Zippered Pockets for Secure Storage
  • Fleece-Lined for Warmth
  • Collar is Lined with Moisture-Wicking Fabric

BEST FOR: EXTRA WARMTH

The Marmot Gravity is a fleece-lined softshell, making it a good choice if you run cold or spend some time not in motion, such as stopping for breaks on a hike or belaying during climbing. The front zipper has a full-length flap to keep air from seeping in, and an adjustable waist hem also helps with this.

The Marmot Gravity is designed with patented Angel-Wing Movement to give you extra mobility through the arms. However, the cut of the jacket tends to fit tight, especially across the shoulders, so you might want to size up, especially if you’re planning to wear other layers underneath.

Mammut Ultimate V

Specs
  • Weight: 9.9 oz
  • Hood: Yes
  • Thumbholes: Yes
Features
  • Moisture-Wicking Lining Keeps You Dry
  • Full Length Side Zippers for Ventilation
  • Extremely Windproof

BEST FOR: SWEATY ACTIVITIES

The Mammut Ultimate V is meant for those who are working up a sweat, so it’s a great go-to for challenging hikes and other strenuous adventures. The lining is moisture-wicking so sweat doesn’t make you clammy and uncomfortable, and there are full-length zippers on each side so you can adjust the ventilation as you’re on the go.

The Ultimate V is made from water repellent Gore Windstopper fabric, so when the wind gusts pick up, your temperature won’t drop. Thumbholes keep the sleeves in place when you need a little extra protection from the chill.

Columbia Heather Canyon

Specs
  • Weight: 15.2 oz
  • Hood: Yes
  • Thumbholes: No
Features
  • Binding on Hood and Cuffs to Keep Them in Place
  • Hem Drawcord for Adjustability
  • Zippered Hand Pockets

BEST FOR: PLUS SIZES

A thin softshell jacket, the Columbia Heather Canyon is made for when you need a little extra warmth and rain protection, but it’s not going to be a good option for more extreme alpine conditions. It does come in plus sizes, so it can fit a wider variety of body types than some standard softshells.

Binding at the hood and cuffs keeps out the cold, and the fabric is water repellent if you get caught in a sprinkle or a shower. The hand pockets are zippered to keep your stuff safe, and the hem features a drawcord so you can cinch it up to fit tight and keep cold air out.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING SOFTSHELL JACKETS FOR WOMEN

A softshell jacket is a versatile outer layer that keeps you warm and dry, while still being breathable and stretchy to give you freedom of movement. Most softshell jackets are made to repel water, though they are not going to stand up to extreme winter conditions where you really need a hardshell jacket. This article from Section Hiker explains the differences between a hardshell and a softshell jacket.

WARMTH

Although one of the main reasons to wear a softshell jacket is for warmth, you will be using the jacket while you’re active outdoors, so you want to make sure you don’t overheat. Some softshells have a fleece lining for extra warmth if you’re hiking in colder conditions, while others have a moisture-wicking lining to keep you comfortable and dry when you sweat. Choose a softshell jacket that has the right warmth level for the activities you do and the climate you do them in.

WATER PROTECTION

Pretty much all softshells are treated to be water repellent, but very few are actually waterproof. If you’re recreating in extremely wet conditions, a hardshell could be a better choice, though the Rab Kinetic Plus is an exception as a true waterproof softshell.

HOOD

Some softshells have hoods, which might be right for you if you want extra head protection without having to bring a hat. Hoods also offer more protection in the rain. However, they can get in the way and be a little bulky, so take into account the conditions you are usually in and think about whether a hood is necessary. Also, if you are a climber, you’ll either want a helmet-compatible hood or a softshell without a hood at all.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

WATER REPELLENT

Fabric is treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) so water doesn’t soak in. It is not fully waterproof.

WIND RESISTANT

Fabric that stops some of the wind from permeating but is still breathable.

HELMET-COMPATIBLE HOOD

A hood that is designed with room to fit over or under a helmet.

This is a great pair of hiking pants designed specifically for a woman’s curves from Outdoor Research. The Ferrosi will take you through all your hiking adventures, even if you encounter the unexpected. Both wind and water resistant, these pants will keep you warm on those windy summits and dry on wet days, especially with the added drawstring cuff on the leg to roll the pant legs up – no more soaking your pant bottoms while hiking through wet terrain! Even in heavy penetrating rains, the nylon/spandex fabric blend makes this pant super quick-drying.

With the articulated knees, there will be no uncomfortable bunching in these pants, but rather they will fit nicely around any knee for ultimate comfort. These pants have a low profile waist thanks to a double snap and built-in drawstring closure. They will fit closely to your waist, so even if you want to rock climb on your adventure, this pant will give you ultimate comfort.

REI Co-op Sahara Convertible

BEST FOR: BUDGET CONSCIOUS HIKERS

You won’t find a higher quality performance pair of hiking pants for under $75. The Saharas are designed to be practical, comfortable, and breathable. They’re constructed from a nylon spandex blend that won’t restrict your range of motion. REI updated the latest iteration to feature a slimmer profile and more flattering shape. These pants feature a built-in belt and zippered pockets and can quickly be converted to shorts, which you can do without even taking your boots off.

What I like most about these is how well they shed water, making them an ideal choice on hikes in potentially inclement weather.

Mountain Hardwear Dynama 2

This pant is an excellent choice to take with you on your travels. It is lightweight and packs up small, so it’ll fit in your suitcase nicely, but is also well equipped to go on hikes. With the low profile and stretch waistband, you will get a flattering fit without the stretch. And because they are so light and trim, you can wear them while traveling to your destination.

This pant can also be purchased in two styles. The first has a cinch built into the ankle, enabling you to roll them up in hot or wet conditions. The other style has a fitted, elastic ankle for a trimmer and fitter look. And unlike many stretch pants, it even has two pockets!

Fjallraven Abisko Trekking Tights

BEST LEGGING-STYLE HIKING PANTS

If you prefer to hike in form-fitting tights but still desire the technical performance of hiking pants, give the Abiskos a try.

Fjallraven designed these tights to be sturdy but breathable. While most leggings aren’t tough enough to withstand the rigors of the backcountry, the Abiskos buck the trend thanks in part to reinforced panels on the knees and butt. These tights are quick to dry and feature useful pockets, as well as a comfy high waist.

What I like most about these hiking tights is how well they hold up to excessive use and abuse.

Patagonia Quandary

If you’re looking for the optimal blend of performance and style, look no further. Patagonia designed the Quandarys from high-quality nylon and spandex. These pants are tough but lightweight and featured articulated knees and a gusseted crotch. Their classy, clean look makes them the best option for wearing as often in town as you would want to out on the trail. Features include drop-in front pockets and one zippered side pocket.

What I like most about the Patagonia Quandary hiking pants is the tilt-in tab and snap feature that allows you to quickly roll up and keep the cuffs in place.

Prana Halle

And with the added benefit of articulated knees, you can run, jump, sit, or climb on any adventure!

Arc’teryx Gamma Lt

Arc'teryx Gamma Lt

BEST FOR: COOL WEATHER HIKES

This pant is well worth the investment. With fabric made to repel water to keep you dry in the rain and highly breathable material to keep you dry from sweat, this pant is ideal even in colder weather. An adjustable pant drawstring cuff also allows for this pant to roll-up in warm and wet weather to keep your bottoms cool and dry.

A built-in belt will give the lady a flattering fit with no gaping behind. And if you find yourself in early morning fog or dusky conditions, the Arc’teryx logo of this pant is reflective to let your fellow trailmates always know where you are.

Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Hike

  • Thigh Slash Pockets For Secure Storage
Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Hike

BEST FOR: THE HIKER-CLIMB GIRL

The Chockstone pant is made with a four-way stretch material, allowing for the best fit and comfort. The extra stretch will even provide the comfort and freedom of movement should you decide to rock climb along your hike. With all the stretchiness, those thigh slash pockets can even hold a cellphone.

The added feature of a removable belt prevents any sagging around the waist and gives you the option to take it off when you don’t need it (so it doesn’t get damaged in the wash, for example). And for warm and wet days, the ankle hem cinch cord allows you to roll these babies up to prevent them from getting wet and dirty.

The North Face Wandur Hike

Specs
  • Closure: Zip Fly with Snap
  • Fabric: Nylon/Elastane
  • UPF: None
  • Waterproof Type: Quick Drying
Features
  • Button Tab Provides for Roll-up Height Adjustability
  • Velcro Flap Closure on Left Thigh Pocket for Added Security
  • Belt Loops for Size Adjustability

BEST: ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PANT

As the name says, the North Face Wandur Hike pant is designed for hiking. Designed with FlashDry fabric, moisture will be pushed to the surface, allowing for rapid evaporation, so you’ll never end up wet or cold. With ample pockets – two angled hand pockets and one on the back pocket, the thigh pocket on the left thigh has a velcro closure, so it is easy to drop things in from the top. The right thigh pocket has a reverse-coil zip, for added security for those things you just cannot have falling out out.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HIKING PANTS

COST

Investing in a new pair of hiking pants does not have to break the bank, but do not try to cut corners to save a few bucks! In the long run, having the appropriate pair of pants for your hiking adventure will make all the difference in whether or not you have a positive experience, especially if you encounter foul weather.

MATERIAL

Remember the cardinal rule for all hiking clothing – cotton is rotten. Just like shirts, it is important to consider the materials and fabric types when selecting hiking pants. Choosing a fabric that is durable, but provides some stretch is just as important as choosing a breathable, but warm fabric.

WEATHER RESISTANCE

A pair of pants that is waterproof is impenetrable to water, but most lightweight, hiking softshells will absorb some water in order to provide breathability. In this case, the pants will be categorized as water resistant, meaning they can withstand a certain amount of moisture and not act like a sponge.

Some pants are listed as water repellent, meaning they have coatings that will bead water up, but with heavy rains, the pants will begin to absorb some water. In case of severe wet weather, pants made with a quick-drying material will dry faster than those that are not.

On day trips in more mild conditions, a water resistant pant will be all you need, but on longer days in colder and constantly wet conditions, a water resistant pant may stay damp. In these situations, having a softshell pant that breathes better than a hardshell will work, but you will also want a thin pair of hardshell pants to throw over top to prevent from getting damp and cold. You might want to consider including a pair of the best women’s rain pants if you plan on hiking through the rain or in wet conditions regularly.

BREATHABILITY

Breathability is what sets apart hardshell and softshell pants. Because the material of hard shell pants is not penetrable, it will keep moisture in and can cause you to feel clammy and cold when your heart rate lowers, which can be extremely dangerous in the mountains. Softshells allow some air flow while still providing water and wind resistance, so even if you work up a sweat, the moisture can evaporate and you will not catch that chill when you slow your pace.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CUFF

The bottom part of the pants that covers the top of the hiking boot. Can be rolled up in some pants to prevent snagging your pant bottoms on roots or soaking them when walking through puddles or wet grass.

SUN PROTECTION

Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is how well the material protects against the sun. The higher the rating, the less UV will be absorbed, protecting you against the sun more.

WAIST PROFILE

The cut of the pants and how they fit around the waist. Low profile waists leave less bulk around the waist for use with harnesses and backpacks.

WATERPROOF

Material that does not allow for any water to penetrate the material.

WATER RESISTANT

Material that is able to repel water, but not completely impenetrable to water.

Reviews - The Best Women's Fleece Jacket

Patagonia R1 Full Zip

Specs
  • Weight: 12.6 oz
  • Hood: Yes
  • Fleece Weight: Medium
  • Zipper Length: Full
Features
  • Fabric stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing
  • Stretchy cuffs push up comfortably over your forearms
  • Low-profile handwarmer pockets
Patagonia R1 Full Zip

BEST OVERALL FLEECE

Combining full featured functionality with high grade materials, this fleece tops our list with ease.

Patagonia’s R1 mid layer series has long been a consumer favorite — and has undergone many iterations, with noticeable improvements to each one. Patagonia constructed this lightweight layer with a grid-patterned fleece design that excels at keeping just the right amount of heat in when you’re on the move. It’s meant for high performance activities and features longer fabric through the arms and torso to keep you covered no matter how you’re moving. Combined with the abrasion resistant exterior coating, this fleece could last you a lifetime.

What I like most about this fleece is the helmet compatible hood, which makes it suitable for rock climbing in addition to hiking and backpacking.

Columbia Benton Springs

Specs
  • Weight: 13.4 oz
  • Hood: No
  • Fleece Weight: Medium
  • Zipper Length: Full
Features
  • 100% polyester MTR filament fleece
  • Two side zippered security pockets
  • Collared neck

BEST CHOICE FOR YOU LADIES ON A BUDGET

If you are looking for that cozy, round-the-campfire fleece feeling without the hefty price tag attached, look no further.

Ready for lounging anywhere, anytime, the Columbia Benton Springs is the ideal mid layer for wearing on chilly morning or evening hikes. A semi-tailored fit makes this fleece stylish enough for wearing around town, but it is a bit too bulky for layering over. It’s important to note this fleece is intended to keep you warm but is not breathable enough for wearing on active adventures.

What I like most about this fleece is that despite being a non-technical piece of outdoor clothing, it sure is comfortable to wear around camp.

VOORMI Access NXT Pullover

Specs
  • Weight: 12.2 oz
  • Hood: No
  • Fleece Weight: Light
  • Zipper Length: Half
Features
  • Integrated Hidden Thumbholes
  • External Chest Pocket with Internal Headphone Port
  • Durable Water Repellent Finish

BEST FOR ADVENTURING IN WET WEATHER

If you’re looking for a comfortable, high-performance, stylish fleece that ALSO performs well in inclement weather, turn to VOORMI — the NXT has you covered.

Designed for wearing during any outdoor pursuit, the Access Pullover feels exceptional against the skin and wicks away moisture with ease. The brand utilizes a unique blend of wool and nylon to provide for a durable yet lightweight fleece that delivers a midweight punch. To top it all off, the DWR finish allows you to wear this fleece as a stand alone piece — even in light rain or snow making it perfect for spring hiking and backpacking.

What I like most about this fleece is how well the athletic fit moves against your body and retains its shape, even after multiple wears in between washes.

The North Face Denali 2

Specs
  • Weight: 1lb 2oz
  • Hood: No
  • Fleece Weight: Heavy
  • Zipper Length: Full
Features
  • Recycled fleece
  • Water-resistant finish
  • Adjustable hem keeps the cold out
  • Multiple zippered pockets keep essentials close
The North Face Denali 2

BEST FOR FRIGID TEMPERATURES

Best suited for wearing around basecamp, while at rest, or performing a low intensity activity, the Denali 2 is sure to keep you warm — no matter how fast the temperature drops.

The heavy-duty Denali 2 definitely sits on the bulkier end of the spectrum of fleece jackets, but the spacious cut allows you to add layers underneath as needed. The integrated nylon chest panel helps the jacket hold its own in inclement elements, too, namely light wind and rain.

What I like about this fleece is the incorporated recycled fleece material, which adds an element of eco-friendliness.

Patagonia Re-Tool Snap T Pullover

Specs
  • Weight: 14.8 oz
  • Hood: No
  • Fleece Weight: Heavy
  • Zipper Length: Quarter
Features
  • Stand-up collar has doubled fleece for warmth
  • Front placket hides a 4-snap closure and is reinforced with nylon
  • Classic Patagonia chest pocket flap with stay-put envelope construction
  • Kangaroo handwarmer pocket
Patagonia Re-Tool Snap T Pullover

BEST FOR LOUNGING AROUND CAMP

If you are looking for a balanced combination of comfort, style, and warmth, check out this fleece — it’s an all-in-one package.

Patagonia’s stylish classic pullover features a chest pocket, 1/4 zip style, and a kangaroo pocket. The Snap T is woven from standard fleece blended with hi-pile Raschel fleece for a bit of added wind protection while retaining that against-the-skin comfort. It’s offered in over ten different color schemes and patterns in total, making it a breeze to find your perfect match.

What I like most about this fleece is the addition of materials around the neck, which provides for extra warmth, especially for those of us ladies who aren’t fans of buffs or other constrictive neck coverings.

The North Face Osito 2

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb. 3 oz.
  • Hood: No
  • Fleece Weight: Medium

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A WOMEN’S FLEECE JACKET

COST

Like many types of outdoor gear, fleece jackets come in a wide variety of prices. It is important to note that while a higher price does often mean a higher quality fleece, a lower price does not necessarily mean a lower quality fleece. After browsing this list, you should be able to find a fleece that fits all of your needs, including those of your budget.

HOOD AND COLLAR SHAPE

Are you a hoodie kind of gal or do you prefer a crew neck? You’ll find a lot of hood variety and collar shapes on this list. Consider your preference for this category and also what you’ll be using your fleece for most. If it will act as its own jacket, perhaps a hood is best. If you plan to use it as a mid layer, a hood may only get in the way.

WEIGHT

Greater jacket weight usually indicates a warmer jacket. You can also look for the fleece weight, which is most often listed as light, medium, or heavy. The difference between jacket weight and fleece weight is explained below. For more information about choosing layers for hikes (or any active outdoor activity) check out this helpful article from REI Experts.

ZIPPER LENGTH

Quarter, half, and full zip are the most popular zipper lengths for fleece jackets. Which is your preference? Consider whether you want to pull the fleece over your head with a quarter or half zip or if you’re prefer to pull the jacket on by unzipping it fully.

POCKETS

Pockets are one of the most important features on any jacket. Consider what you’ll want to stash in them, how many you want, and what size you like. At the very least, front pockets are great for hiking in cold weather because you can stash not your stuff, but your hands! Pockets also have several mechanisms for closing – zips, snaps, or folds. Consider what you’ll use them for and which style is best for your jacket.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FLEECE WEIGHT VERSUS JACKET WEIGHT

Fleece weight refers to the density of the fleece itself and is normally measured in terms of “light,” “medium,” or “heavy.” Jacket weight refers to the overall weight of the jacket and may include the weight of other materials like zippers and snaps. Jacket weight is typically measured in pounds and ounces.

CHIN GUARD

Some fleece jackets have chin guards, which are made up of a soft layer of fabric and designed to protect the neck, chin, and lower face area from uncomfortable rubbing.

WOVEN LAYER

Some fleece jackets are simply made of 100% fleece, while others have an outer or “woven” layer that provides added warmth and fabric durability.

QUICK-DRYING FABRIC

Fabric that is designed to wick moisture away rather than lock it in and stay wet.

RECYCLED MATERIAL

Many products from REI use recycled materials to produce new clothing products. Recycled material clothes are clothes you can feel good about buying! For more information on Recycled Materials used in outdoor gear, check out what REI Experts have to say on the matter here.

Plus, the fabric is moisture-wicking, so you’ll stay cool and dry while you sweat.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HIKING LEGGINGS

FABRIC

When selecting hiking leggings, or any kind of workout clothing for that matter, it is extremely important to consider the fabric! Did you know that cotton locks in sweat and other moisture? You wouldn’t want to wear it on a hike. Instead, look for fabrics that are “moisture-wicking” and “quick-drying” like spandex and polyester. Almost all of the leggings on this list have these drying and cooling properties.

LENGTH

Hiking leggings also come in a number of different lengths. Perhaps you’re looking for full length coverage, or maybe you want to show off a little calf action. When considering length, think about the kind of style you want to wear, but also the climate you will be hiking in. For example, if you’re going to take on a bunch of dessert hikes, you probably want to opt for a shorter legging that will keep you cooler. The opposite is true if you plan to seek out peaks in cooler climates. For a general overview of how to choose hiking clothes, check out this helpful article from REI Expert Advice.

WAISTLINE

Think about how you like your everyday pants to fit. Are you the high-waisted type or do you like the hip-huggers? The waistlines on hiking leggings are designed to fall in several places along your torso, so before you buy, think about where your sweet spot is for comfort and confidence.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UPF

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is a measure of how well the fabric blocks radiation from the sun. A UPF of 10 means that 1/10th of UV radiation can penetrate the fabric. Higher UPF’s mean stronger protection. For more information on UPF and how to choose sun-protective clothing, read this article from REI Expert Advice.

PANTS RISE

The point at which the waistband of the leggings sits.

DRAWCORD

A string in the waistband, used to make fine adjustments to the fit of the pants around your hips or waist.

SEAM CONSTRUCTION

The way with which thread is woven to hold your leggings together.

REFLECTIVE FABRIC

Patches of material that reflect light to make you visible when visibility is low, like in dark or cloudy weather.

COMPRESSION

A feature of some hiking leggings that is designed to put light pressure on you for a snug and secure fit.

BEST FOR: DAILY USE

The simple and sleek Patagonia Sweater Vest is a primo cold buster you’ll want to add to your insulation arsenal. This down vest sports an attractive trim fit that’s both warm and packable. The vest compresses down into a pocket making it a go-to staple you can have on hand anytime.

Packed with 800-fill goose down, the Patagonia Down Sweater features an incredible amount of toasty insulation that will keep your core warm while effortlessly regulating your body temperature. That is, as long as conditions are mild. The durable shell of this down vest will serve you well in repelling light moisture and breezy weather, but the moment inclement weather strikes, you’ll want to reach for your rain jacket.

REI Co-op 650 2.0

Specs
  • Fabric: Recycled nylon taffeta
  • Weight: Unavailable
  • Fill Power: 650-fill-power down
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Hood: No

  • Contains bluesign® materials
  • Certified to the Responsible Down Standard
REI Co-op 650 2.0

BEST FOR: THOSE ON A BUDGET

When you need a performance piece and don’t have hundreds to spend, consider REI’s 650 2.0 down vest — it won’t disappoint.

The 2.0 is offered in both men’s and women’s styles. It’s stuffed with 650 fill power down which means less warmth for the weight than our overall pick, but REI upgraded its most recent iteration with square-shaped baffles and a roomier fit that adds loft to help keep the warmth in.

What I like most about the 650 2.0 down vest is that it’s crafted from Bluesign materials and RDS-certified down, which ensures the humane treatment of birds.

Arc’teryx Cerium LT

Specs
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Weight: 6 oz.
  • Fill Power: 850 Fill-Power European White Goose Down And Coreloft 100 Synthetic Insulation
  • Insulation Type: Down/Synthetic Blend
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Lightweight
  • Water-Repellent
  • Quality Construction
  • Internal Zippered Pocket To Secure Small Items
Arc'teryx Cerium LT

BEST FOR: FRIGID ALPINE HIKES

Ultralight hikers, eat your heart out with the mouthwatering warmth-to-weight ratio of the Arc’teryx Cerium LT. This down vest practically radiates heat with its lofty fill power that optimizes insulation at a ridiculously light weight. By strategically placing the down throughout the vest, Arc’teryx was able to maximize warmth around your core. Then, they cleverly utilized synthetic insulation in specific areas more apt to moisture to keep you dry – like sweaty armpits.

Pop up the high collar and cinch down the hem cord at your waist to seal in the heat. With premium-quality like this, you’ll find the price to match. However, if you’re an avid hiker looking to stay warm and active, you’ll appreciate every last pricey plume.

Patagonia Nano Puff

Specs
  • Fabric: Recycled polyester ripstop
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Weight: 8 oz.
  • Fill Power: 60g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Brick quilting pattern for stable insulation & durable thread for abrasion resistance
  • Center-front zipper has wicking interior storm flap
  • Two zippered handwarmer pockets
  • PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco is water repellent and retains 98% of its insulating ability even when wet
Patagonia Nano Puff

BEST SYNTHETIC PICK

If you’re looking for something that feels similar to down but breathes better and dries quicker, consider the Nano Puff.

Patagonia designed the Nano Puff as a versatile, sleek, and affordable down vest option. This vest features highly advanced PrimaLoft Gold Eco insulation that makes for a great three season piece that layers well, is decently warm, and packs down small.

What I like most about the Patagonia Nano Puff Vest is its considerably slimmer-looking profile when compared to down alternatives in its class.

Cotopaxi Fuego

Specs
  • Fabric: 20-Denier Giant-Ripstop Nylon
  • Weight: 7 oz.
  • Fill Power: 800-Fill Power Goose Down
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Bright And Bold Design
  • Affordable
  • Water-resistant Finish And Down
Cotopaxi Fuego

BEST FOR: FICKLE WEATHER

You can recognize Cotopaxi a mile away with their fun bold and bright designs. If you’re looking to add some flair to your drab cold-weather wardrobe, the Cotopaxi Fuego will heat things up. Zip into this vest and let your core warm up with the lofty insulation. The durable water repellent nylon will fend off any moisture in the air while the dual internal and external zippered pockets protect smaller items. Other than the eye-popping color pattern, another one of the features that will catch your eye is that the premium down is also water-resistant. This adds a bit more peace of mind when you’re out romping in drizzly conditions.

You may think twice, however, about the flashy color and elastic binding around the hem and shoulders. With regular wear, we’re a tad worried the elastic may stretch. And if you’re not ready to blow your incognito mode, perhaps you may want to go with a more earthy color.

The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse

Specs
  • Fabric: Recycled Polyester Taffeta
  • Weight: N/A
  • Fill Power: 700-Fill Goose Down
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Packs Into Chest Pocket
  • Vintage Design
  • Hood Stows In Collar
  • Moisture Protection

BEST FOR: CASUAL DAY HIKES

If you’re nostalgic for a time when vests had large baffles (the squishy squares that hold the down in place) and the bulk to match, you’ll appreciate The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse throwback. Loft is not a problem with this super plush old-school style vest. The wide baffles provide stellar warmth, leaving you to feel like you just wrapped up inside a cozy blanket. Combine that comfort with the durable, water-repellent exterior and stowable hood and you have the ideal layer for hiking on a cold day. While minimalist and agile hikers may argue this vest is too hefty, those who prefer to wrap up in something big and cozy will appreciate the heavier relaxed fit.

Patagonia Bivy Hooded

Specs
  • Fabric: Nylon Canvas
  • Weight: 23.6 oz.
  • Fill Power: N/A
  • Insulation Type: Recycled Down
  • Hood: Yes
Features
  • Durable
  • Beefy Construction
  • Adjustable Insulated Hood
  • Attractive Design

BEST FOR: RUGGED TRAIL WORK

Working outdoors in less than ideal conditions requires tough apparel that can take a beating. The Patagonia Bivy Hooded Vest is up to the challenge. This beefy down vest is constructed from a rugged, pliable canvas that repels light rain and wind. Stuffed inside the wide baffles you’ll find 100% recycled down which seals in the warmth while you’re plowing through the trail.

With western-style yoke shoulders, the Patagonia Bivy Hooded Vest was built to handle heavy loads. Secure your small items in the internal pocket, then block out the weather with the full-length front zipper, metal snap buttons, and adjustable hood. While it would be nice if the side entry hand pockets also had zippers for securing items, you probably don’t want stuff poking you in the belly when you’re working away. If you work hard and play harder, the heavy duty Patagonia Bivy Hooded Vest may be right up your alley.

Rab Microlight

Specs
  • Fabric: Pertex Quantum Nylon
  • Weight: 8.5 oz.
  • Fill Power: 750-Fill European Goose Down
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Moisture-Resistant Down
  • Slim Fit
  • Warm
Rab Microlight

BEST FOR: MISTY CONDITIONS

If clumped up down drives you crazy, you’ll appreciate the Rab Microlight. The slender and micro-stitched baffles keep the down evenly spread out so it’s not annoyingly balling up in any one place in the vest. Slim fitting and lightweight, the Rab Microlight lets you maintain your pace without feeling bundled down.

As a plus, the down inside the Rab Microlight is treated to fend off moisture so it will maintain loft and insulation even when wet. So go on, scoff in the face of cloudy days and trek above the treeline. The Rab Microlight will keep you warm even when you’re hiking through the clouds.

Outdoor Research Plaza

Specs
  • Fabric: Polyester
  • Weight: 15 oz.
  • Fill Power: 600-Fill Down
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Hood: No
Features
  • Durable Water Repellent Finish
  • Down Certified
  • Stretchy, Breathable Side Panels

BEST FOR: MILD WEATHER

For those days when it’s too warm for a jacket but too cold for a just a long-sleeve, zip into the Outdoor Research Plaza. This soft and cozy down vest is stuffed with a decent amount of loft for your brisk outdoor adventure with one bonus feature added: stretchy side panels. These breathable side panels are designed to move with your body and enhance air circulation when you start to break a sweat. This way, you can move freely and comfortably even as you warm up. The one drawback here is if your activity doesn’t require much exertion or if it’s a particularly frigid day, these side panels allow the cold to seep in.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING DOWN VESTS FOR WOMEN

COST

Down is not cheap. That being said, down vests for women will vary in price with some options being more affordable than others. Typically, the more money you spend, the better the insulation you’ll get. If you’re the type to run cold, it may be worth it to you to invest more money.

WEIGHT

Most down vests are exceptionally lightweight, weighing only a handful of ounces. However, there are some down vests out there that tip the scale. If you’re the active type looking to be light and swift on your feet, go with a lighter weight. Meanwhile, if you’re more casual about your activities or prefer the comfort of bulkier layers, a heavier weight will suit you well.

FIT

Ladies, we can’t ignore the fact that we not only want functional clothes, but we want clothes that fit well. As no two bodies are alike, the preferred fit of your down vest will be a matter of preference. If you like loose clothing, look for a more relaxed fit. If you prefer clothing that hugs your contours, a slim fit will suit you well.

DOWN VERSUS SYNTHETIC

The two types of insulation you’ll encounter when searching for a women’s vest are down and synthetic.

DOWN insulation is comprised of waterfowl plumage. This natural insulation is coveted for being lightweight, breathable, compressible, super warm, and long-lasting. The problem with down is it loses its ability to keep you insulated when it becomes wet and it can be very expensive.

SYNTHETIC insulation is usually made of polyester. This material is quick-drying, durable, typically costs less, and can provide insulation even when wet. The downside is it’s heavier and not as warm or as durable as down.

DOWN CERTIFIED

Over the years, there has been a lot of controversy over down products. While we’re not here to take sides, we are here to inform you about important considerations you need to take into account when purchasing a down vest.

If you’re concerned with how your down is sourced, look for down certified vests. Many outdoor manufacturers are turning to sustainably sourced down so this is becoming a more come feature.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DWR (DURABLE WATER-REPELLENT) FINISH

DWR stands for durable water-repellent finish. This finish causes raindrops to bead up then repel off the material to which it’s applied so you don’t become saturated.

BAFFLES

Seams stitched throughout the fabric to give down structure and keep the insulation in place.

INSULATION

The insulation will tell you precisely what your down vest is filled with to keep you warm. This is where you will find the down fill power.

DOWN FILL POWER

Down fill power refers to the loft or volume of the down. This number references the quality of the down. The higher the number, the better the warmth-to-weight ratio.

FABRIC

The fabric of your down vest will range in material, with ripstop nylon and polyester being the most common. These are both durable and quick-drying which is great for active use.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BASE LAYERS FOR WOMEN

WEIGHT

One of the most important factors you need to consider when choosing base layers is weight. The three different weight categories are:

Lightweight

Base layers made from lighter, thinner fabric that’s made for mild to cool temperatures.

Midweight

Base layers designed for cold temperatures and best used during moderate activity.

Heavyweight

Base layers meant for the coldest, harshest conditions. They’ll be thicker than the other layers and less moisture wicking.

FIT

Relaxed or form-fitting, every lady wants to feel good in how their clothes fit. That said, base layers can be tricky. Too tight and you may find yourself needing to make constant re-adjustments or encountering a restricted range of motion. On the other hand, if your base layers are too loose, they’ll let too much heat escape which is precisely the opposite of their purpose! Find layers that are snug enough to comfortably layer under your mid and outer layers without letting heat escape. Check out our guide on What to Hear Hiking for more tips and considerations.

LAYERING

There’s an art to layering and it goes like this: base layer, mid-layer, outer layer. Combined, these three layers are your best defense against the cold. So that means you want to make sure at the core of your defense is the best layer up to the challenge.

Choose a base layer that can fit comfortably under the other two layers while providing enough warmth to match the intensity and temperature of your hike. Then, you can take off the other layers and toss them on as needed without losing your core heat.

BREATHABILITY

Nobody likes feeling stifled by their clothes when hiking. Before you choose a base layer, make sure the breathability matches your level of activity. If you’re a fast and swift hiker, you’ll be working up a sweat, so more breathable materials will be your friend. If you’re just planning on taking a stroll through a wintery wonderland, then it might be in your best interest to choose a heavier weight base layer, to keep you warm while you’re moving slowly through the cold wilderness.

SYNTHETIC VERSUS WOOL

The two main types of materials you’ll encounter when purchasing a base layer are synthetic and wool. Here’s the difference:

Wool

Wool is naturally moisture-wicking, breathable, odor-resistant, and thermoregulating. The drawback is that it often comes at a hefty price.

Synthetic

Synthetic base layers can range in materials with polyester, nylon, and blends being the most popular. These are quick-drying, durable, and typically less expensive.

Whether you decide to go with wool base layers or synthetic is totally up to you. It may be worthwhile trying out some layers made of both types to get a feel for what you prefer and then make your decision once you know what you like.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

UPF RATING

The UPF rating is a sun protection rating that clothing manufacturers assign to a garment to communicate how well it blocks out the sun. A UPF of 50+ is the highest rating you’ll come across, meaning it blocks out the most harmful UV rays.

MATERIAL

Merino Wool is the most common type of wool you’ll encounter in outdoor apparel. It’s coveted for being moisture-wicking, breathable, durable, quick-drying, great for sun protection, and less itchy than other wool. It’s also incredibly thermoregulating which means it helps you maintain your core temperature in warm and cold weather.

Polyester is a synthetic material that is durable and hydrophobic.

Capilene Polyester is a synthetic, proprietary material made by Patagonia. This material is moisture-wicking, breathable, and temperature regulating.

COST

When choosing the best women’s rain jackets for hiking, you’ll rely on a culmination of various factors including features, technologies, and intended use. These all factor into the final price.

What you shell out in cash will amount to what you get back in performance. Entry-level rain jackets will feature an attractively low price point at around $100 or less. However, these budget-friendly jackets are likely to wear out after repeated use. Meanwhile, top-of-the-line rain jackets will be more durable in design, yet are likely to cost you a few hundred dollars in price. Make sure to consider what you can reasonably afford and how often you plan on hiking in wet conditions before deciding which rain jacket is right for you.

WEIGHT

Weight can play a major role in how comfortable you are while hiking in the pouring rain – both while you’re wearing the jacket and if you’re carrying it in your pack. As more hikers are becoming interested in ultralight gear, outdoor manufacturers are revolutionizing technology to match lightweight fabrics with more durable performance. The trouble is, these technologically advanced products can come with a hefty price.

When considering a rain jacket in your budget range, you want to make sure the rain jacket enhances your comfort rather than hinders it because of a heavy weight. If you only hike occasionally in relatively dry areas, then consider purchasing a less expensive, lighter-weight shell like the REI Co-Op Rainer. Otherwise, pay attention to the weight of the jacket and weigh the costs and benefits of having a heavy jacket vs. a lightweight shell while hiking.

USE

Will you be hiking at high elevations in an alpine wilderness? Or is a casual jaunt at your local state park more your style? Perhaps you’re planning on backpacking for a few weeks on the Appalachian Trail or maybe you just want to be prepared for a storm next time you go on a day hike. The type of hiking you do will determine how well you need your rain jacket to perform.

For long-distance hikes in challenging terrain, look for a more technical rain jacket. If you plan on keeping the rain jacket stuffed in the bottom of your pack the majority of the time, then a less expensive emergency rain jacket will suit you just fine.

BREATHABILITY

As you start to work up a sweat while hiking, you’ll become fully aware of how breathable your rain jacket is. The best rain jacket for hiking will allow your perspiration to dissipate, helping to prevent you from feeling clammy inside. Basically, its shouldn’t leave you feeling like you’re wearing a garbage bag – ew! Look for rain jackets built with materials that breathe well while also offering ample protection from wet conditions.

HOOD ADJUSTABILITY

Adjustable hoods are clutch. Your rain jacket can have the best waterproofing material money can buy, but if you can’t shield your face from getting pelted with raindrops, you’re going to be miserable. Look for a hood with adjustable points that can be cinched down to fit your dome. This will help keep the rain out and the wind from exposing your melon to the elements.

Also, if you’re a climber and you plan on hitting the crag in iffy conditions, check to make sure that the rain jacket you buy has a helmet compatible hood. We included two on our list with this feature (the Outdoor Research Interstellar and the Norrona Falketind).

HAND POCKETS

Hand pockets are a major bonus for a few reasons. They can help keep your hands warm, store gear for quick access, and in some cases, aid in ventilation. If you plan on keeping your phone or other electronics in the pockets of your rain jacket, be sure they are fully waterproof.

While most rain jackets include hand pockets, some ultralight and minimalist rain jackets won’t. If you can’t live without hand pockets, this is something to keep in mind.
