TOP OVERALL SKI GLOVE

When you don’t want to settle for less than the best, trust in the hybrid leather and synthetic Helis.

The respected Swedish manufacturer designed the Helis to be stylish and functional. They feature quality gauntlet-style cuffs and a combination polyamide/goat leather shell, combining best of both worlds of synthetic and leather materials. The leather assists the glove in flexing easily as well as lending it a good amount of durability. Synthetic Fiberfill insulation integrated in all the right places ensures your hands stay warm even on the coldest of winter days.

What I like most about the Hestra Helis is how durably they’re constructed, making for a glove that will last you many seasons.

Gordini GTX Storm Trooper II

BEST BUDGET PICK

If you’re a recreational skier looking for a durable, well-constructed ski glove on a tight budget, these $70 Gordinis are worth some serious consideration.

Gordini designed the GTX Storm Troopers IIs from a combination of leather and synthetic materials, resulting in an affordable glove that doesn’t match the quality of premium models but does a solid job at what’s important — keeping your hands warm and dy. The MegaLoft synthetic insulation is of quality build and provides for ample warmth, even when wet. The breathable, stretch-woven shell sports a GORE-TEX insert. There’s a zippered hand warmer pocket, as well.

What I like most about the Storm Trooper II glove is how generously they loft despite the affordable price.

BEST SKI MITTENS

On the coldest adventures when the elements are so extreme that gloves just won’t do the trick, the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts are sure to suffice.

The warmth of these mittens come from the intentionally built liner with 340 grams of PrimaLoft insulation, fleece coating, and coverage with Black Diamond’s proprietary BDry waterproof fabric. These gloves come with an insulated liner and a hanging loop, which would make them a conducive choice for use on cold, alpine climbs.

What I like most about the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts is that they come with an internal index finger slot that provides for an added degree of dexterity when needed.

Hestra Power Heater

Specs
  • Color: Black
  • Fabric: Hestra Flextron polyamide

  • Waterproof Type: Hestra Flextron polyamide
  • Removable Liner: No

BEST HEATED CHOICE

For those skiers who greatly benefit from a boost of heat when riding that first chair up the mountain — but don’t want to sacrifice weight and dexterity for the heavy systems of warmer, battery-heated gloves — consider the perfectly balanced Hestra Power Heater.

These gloves provide for adequate weather resistance, dexterity through the fingers, and ample durability. Although not as powerful as gloves with larger heating systems, the Hestra boasts a more streamlined profile, and the heating element is virtually unnoticeable when not in use and a control button lets you adjust them to your optimal temperature.

What I like most about the Hestra Power Heater gloves is the Fiberfill insulation integrated into the construction. It does a superior job at sealing in the warmth.

Arc’teryx Sabre

Arc’Teryx has really built its reputation over the years. Their coats are some of the best on the market, and these gloves help defend that reputation. What makes this pair of ski gloves stand out is their superior breathability. The wrist strap allows you to really adjust how the gloves fit around your wrist. Even though most of the glove is made with nylon, the fingers are made from leather. This will keep your fingers warm in extremely low temperatures.

Hestra Gloves Fall Line

BEST LEATHER GLOVES

With each and every ski season, Hestra gloves seem to get more and more popular. Spurring their growth is an all-leather construction, which molds to your hands over time. These gloves are very comfortable and also super warm. What they lack is waterproofing abilities. However, don’t let that dissuade you from buying a pair of these gloves. You’d have to soak the entire glove in water in order to feel the exterior moisture on your bare hand inside the glove. Due to their leather construction, they also last longer than polyester or nylon gloves. Scoop up this pair of high quality leather gloves if you’re planning on skiing in nice weather and want superior warmth on the slopes!

Black Diamond Guide

They are made with goat leather which allows for superior grip. Your ski poles will never slide out of your glove. These gloves will serve you on every part of the mountain. If you are a backcountry skier or mountaineer, these gloves will never let you down!

Swany X Cell II

BEST HANDWARMER COMPATIBLE GLOVES

Hand warmers can be your best friend on the mountain, or they can be an unnecessary nuisance. Swany has made using hand warmers simpler and more comfortable by creating a special pocket for sliding hand warmers into. These gloves also feature locking zippers. You won’t have a problem keeping snow out of these gloves. They may not be as waterproof as gloves with Gore-Tex, but they are extremely comfortable and they’re sure to keep your hands toasty all day long!

Outdoor Research Lucent Heated

BEST SKI GLOVES FOR WARMTH

These gloves are the only ones on the list to feature a battery-powered heating insert. If you have notoriously cold hands and you’ve tried just about every glove out there with no success, it’s time to invest in this pair of gloves. They are heavier and bulkier than others, but for good reason. The gloves have leashes and clips, which will alleviate any concern that you may lose an expensive glove. These gloves may not be the most comfortable, but they certainly are the warmest.

Marmot Randonnee

View Women's Version
Specs
  • Color: Black
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Gender: Men’s / Women’s
  • Insulation: Synthetic
  • Waterproof?: Yes
  • Type of Waterproofing: Gore-Tex Inserts
  • Removable Liner: Yes
Features
  • Falcon-Grip Articulation Makes Gloves Durable And Easy To Use
  • Patented DriClime Lining Keeps Hands Moisture Free
  • Breathable Gore-Tex Glove Inserts For Ultimate Waterproofing Protection

BEST SKI GLOVE FOR SWEATY HANDS

The Marmot Randonee is a very affordable glove. It has removable Gore-Tex inserts which help keep your hands dry. On top of that, their patented DriClime lining on the inside of the glove has moisture-wicking abilities. Sweaty hands aren’t a good thing, especially on cold days. These gloves combat your natural perspiration better than any other gloves on the list. That being said, they do not provide as much warmth as other gloves on the list, so if you tend to run cold, look for another pair. But if you know you get sweaty palms before every descent, then these gloves are ideal for you!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING GLOVES FOR SKIING

EXTERIOR FABRIC

What’s better — polyester or leather? The truth is, it comes down to personal preference. Leather gloves are more comfortable, but they lock in moisture and become much heavier when wet. Polyester gloves are lighter and more waterproof, but often get much colder than leather gloves. If you want a balance between both, consider waterproofing your leather gloves.

INSULATION

The insulation of your ski glove will directly correlate to how cold or warm your hand is while you’re wearing the gloves. While the reviews vary from skier to skier, Primaloft Wool is the lightest and warmest insulation available. If you’ve had a pair of trusted gloves for years that are ready to be replaced and you know what type of insulation they had, we recommend you try to find a replacement pair with the same type of insulation.

SHORT CUFFS VS. LONG CUFFS

This debate will never be settled. Long cuffs are bulkier, but they can fit underneath (or over) your coat and will keep moisture out of your gloves and off your wrists. Short cuffs are much less of a nuisance, but you are prone to snow getting into your gloves if you opt for the short cuffs. In the end, whether you choose long or short cuffs will be a matter of personal preference.

REMOVABLE LINERS

Removable liners are great for spring days. If the temperature gets too warm, you’ll be able to remove your big, bulky gloves and enjoy the slopes with something much lighter on your hands.

WATERPROOF

Waterproof ski gloves are a lifesaver in extreme snowstorms. Most of the gloves on this list boast being waterproof, but some fabrics are better than others. If you want your hands to truly stay moisture-free, get yourself a pair of Gore-Tex gloves. This is the best waterproof fabric.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CORD ADJUSTMENT ON CUFFS

This will allow you to tighten or loosen the cuffs of your gloves, so you can put them on and take them off easily and ensure they’ll stay in place to prevent snow or moisture from entering at your wrists.

GRIPPING ABILITIES

The palm of a glove is particularly important for skiers. The better the gripping ability, the less you have to worry about having your poles slide out from under you. Pay attention to the material of the glove and make sure the glove you choose has a grippy palm material so you don’t accidentally let your ski poles slip through your gloved hands.

PRE-CURVED DESIGN

Gloves with this feature will feel broken in right from the get-go. They are much more comfortable when gripping something than other, non pre-curved gloves.

The brim of this hat is smaller than others on this list, providing for a little less sun coverage but it does not rub or chafe, drastically increasing its comfort.

What I like most about the Summer Packer is how well it regains its shape without creases or lasting damage, even after being shoved in a pack.

Patagonia Duckbill

BEST FOR: PACKABILITY

If you are always on the go and like efficient things that don’t take up your space, then the Patagonia Duckbill cap might be worth your time. It uses an open tricot mesh that reflects and dissipates heat. Because of this mesh, the cap is easy to fold and pack – even into your pocket. And when you need it, it will bounce back into shape all ready to go.

The cap’s bill is short, and while it won’t cover your face and ears, it is enough to cover your eyes and not obstruct your view. It is designed to give you full awareness of any overhead branches on your running path. The bill’s dark color further reduces glare for maximum comfort for your eyes. As per usual, the cap has a moisture-wicking band and a back buckle to adjust the fit.

If you like boating, the LTM6 has something to offer as well. Its closed-cell foam will make it float on water so you can retrieve it if it happens to fall in. Under-the-chin cords will keep it on your head so the hat doesn’t fall off in the first place in case of windy conditions. The Outdoor Research Swift Cap is a ball cap that is sometimes compared to a tent. Why? For all the good reasons. With a 3-panel mesh, it is breathable and can wick away moisture so you feel fresh and comfortable. The additional three layers above the forehead and scalp area have rainfly properties to repel water and wind. As for sunlight, a 2.75-inch bill prevents it from scorching your skin. Plus, the fabric has useful UV protection of more than UPF 50. So it’s basically like a tent for your head!

Some people have small heads, and the Swift Cap accounts for that. An adjustable buckle back closure can be tightened so that everyone can find a fit that works. And if it gets dusty, the cap is easily washable and quick-drying for utmost convenience.

With its stretchy mesh, the Columbia Mesh ball cap is a great choice for long-distance hikes and full days on the dock or in the park. Plus, an ergonomic shape ensures comfort over a long time, as well as a great fit – even for people with big head circumferences.

To top things off, this ball cap is also exceptionally stylish. Another popular feature of this cap is its long and curved bill that effectively shades your face from the sun and keeps the rain out of your eyes. Plus, this ball cap comes with all these fantastic features for an affordable price that can’t be beat!

Tilley Airflo Medium Brim

Specs
  • Fabric: Nylon
  • Style: Sun Hat
  • Quick Drying: Yes
Features
  • Stain Resistant And Water Repellent
  • Great For All Weather Conditions
  • Comfortable Fit With Ventilation Panel

BEST FOR: THE ALL-ROUND TRAVELLER

Although similar to the Tilley LTM6 Airflo, the Tilley Airflo Medium Brim hat is geared more towards warm-weather hiking. It is lightweight and easy to take care of, which is great for the summer. A Hydrofil band is included in the design to wick away sweat, and a mesh insert supplies coolness around the crown. This hat is guaranteed to protect you against sun rays with its UPF 50+ rating. And in case the sun is not there, a water-repellent finish also wards off against showers and stains.

Your valuables will also be safeguarded by a hidden pocket. Another small, but useful feature includes cords that keep the wind from snatching the hat off your head. And even if it does fly off and you’re in the middle of fishing, the hat will float on water instead of sinking.

KUHL Renegade Cap

Specs
  • Fabric: 95% Nylon, 5% Spandex
  • Style: Ball Cap
  • Quick Drying: Yes
Features
  • Quick And Easy One Hand Strap System
  • Great Texture And Feel
  • Good Anti-abrasion Protection

BEST FOR: THE NO-FRILLS MINIMALIST

Despite the simple looks, the KUHL Renegade cap offers the essentials of comfort for a hike. Its panels are made to tailor to your head from all sides, and with the help of a strap you can quickly perfect the fit. This is a cap you can wear both on the trails and in town because of its versatile shape – a flatter than most bill and not much height. It uses a durable water-repellent fabric that shields from rain and wicks away perspiration.

To further the cap’s durable properties, it is made with an anti-abrasion fabric. Thus, you don’t have to worry about the wear and tear of the Renegade. Finally, it has a UPF 50+ rating – ready and able to protect you from the sun! All in all, the Renegade will not disappoint.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HIKING HAT

MATERIALS

Most hiking hats are built with synthetic materials that are lightweight and quick-drying. Nylon is the most common fabric available on the market, but hats are often made with a mix of more materials than just nylon. Mesh is useful for hiking in warm temperatures, as it allows for the air to pass through. Some hats come with a water repellent coating, helpful when the weather is unpredictable. Some brands state that their fabrics are “blue design approved” which refers to a certified sustainable production process.

SHAPE

Hats come in a variety of shapes. Traditional ball caps or sun hats are ideal when walking in mild temperatures, as only your eyes are protected. For full protection against sun rays, a rain hat is a better option, as it covers your ears and neck as well. Some hats also come with an integrated insect repellent, useful if you are hiking in humid environments where mosquitos are a threat.

UV PROTECTION

Hats with a wide brim will protect you from dangerous ultraviolet rays. UV light contains a level of radiation that can cause harm to the skin with over exposure. Hiking hats save you not only from direct UV rays, but also from the reflection that comes from sand, rocks, or snow.

PORTABILITY

When deciding on what to hear hiking, take portability into consideration. Big hiking hats are not as portable as one may think. With capes that reach the lower part of your neck, they can occupy a lot of precious space when stored. If packing light and small is a priority, opt for a hat that has a foldable design. This way, you can reduce the bulk to a minimum when you are not using the hat.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

BRIM

That frontal visor of a hat that protects forehead and eyes from sun rays.

HYDROFIL

A water repellent substance, used in hats to wick moisture and sweat.

UPF RATING

A rating that measures to what level a fabric protects you from the sun. The UPF rating refers to the quantity of UV radiation that reaches the skin. Hat labels that state “UPF 50+” offer maximum protection.

UV RAYS

Ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight. Overexposure to UV light can be harmful to the skin.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING WOMEN’S MOUNTAIN BIKE HELMETS

CRASH TECHNOLOGY

Helmet technology is always improving. MIPS (explained below) is the newest trend in mountain bike safety. In general, technology that helps disperse the impact to more than one area of the head helps to reduce the consequences of crashing. For more on how the experts determine a helmet’s certified level of safety, check out this informative article from Red Bull.

VENTILATION

Stay cool, dudette! Ventilation should be an important consideration when making a helmet purchase. You can usually find the number of vents a helmet has listed somewhere in the specs or the product description, and whether or not it implements a special system to move cool air in and hot air out.

PADDING / LINERS

Since you’ll (hopefully) be wearing your helmet each and every time you ride, you want it to be comfortable! The padding and liners of your helmet play a key role in comfort level. You definitely don’t want something scratchy, and material that wicks moisture is always a plus.

FIT AND ADJUSTMENT

Many mountain biking helmets come in more than one size and provide measurements and instructions for choosing the right one for you. Almost all come with a size adjustment dial (see below), but some also come with other adjustment points along the strap and inner body of the helmet. For more information on choosing the right fit for your new helmet, check out How to Choose the Right Mountain Bike Helmet, courtesy of Single Tracks.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

MIPS

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It is a relatively new helmet technology that prevents the full force of impact to affect a single area of the head.

EPS

EPS stands for expanded polystyrene. It is a crushable foam that acts as a cushion in a crash.

VISOR

The visor extends off the front top part of the helmet to provide shade on your face.

SIZE ADJUSTMENT DIAL

Located at the inner back of the helmet, the size adjustment dial allows you to change the size of the innermost part of your helmet, making it fit snugly on your head.

CHIN COVERAGE

Some helmets cover the bottom part of your face for extra protection, instead of having just a strap to keep it on. This extra protection is referred to as “chin coverage” in the text of this article. Helmets with chin coverage are also called “full face” helmets as compared to “half shell” styles that don’t offer chin protection.

IN-MOLD HELMET CONSTRUCTION

A method for helmet construction that involves bonding all components of the helmet together at once, rather than individually attaching each piece. In-mold construction helps to maintain strong structural integrity.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MOUNTAIN BIKE HANDLEBAR BAGS

How much gear do you need or want to carry and what gear are you planning on carrying? Bike handlebar bags are best suited for bulky yet lightweight items, such as sleeping bags, lightweight clothing, and small essentials such as your phone and wallet.

If you’re planning a multi-day bike touring adventure you’ll probably need to carry more gear, so a larger handlebar bag (up to 15L) would be a good option. If you’re planning on going on a single day epic adventure where you just need somewhere to put your phone, wallet, a small jacket, and extra snacks then a 3L bag may be enough.

If you want some inspiration for what to pack – check out The Adventure Junkies Bike Touring Packing List here.

SIZE – LENGTH

The length of the bike handlebar bag will also need to be considered. If your bike has drop handlebars, which tend to be narrower than their flat bar counterparts, you may need to choose a shorter bag so it fits on your handlebars. There are options on the list above like the Ortlieb 9L which are considered a compact design and are best suited for drop handlebars.

MATERIAL

Most bike handlebar bags are waterproof, and some will feature specially designed heavy duty materials so they are suited to rugged riding and terrain. These materials are often lightweight. Depending on your bike touring adventure, you may want to choose a bag that features waterproof and heavy duty material to ensure your gear stays dry and safe.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

HOOK AND LOOP

This is a mounting system that is most commonly velcro or buckle style straps that are on top of the bag. It allows the bag to loop over the handlebars and can be micro-tightened to ensure the perfect fit.

ROLL TOP

This is a style of bag closure. You simply roll the top of the bag down and then clip the buckle to keep it tightened. Some bags will have this on both ends for easy access to both sides of the bag.

DRYBAG

A waterproof and lightweight bag that will keep anything inside dry.

CRADLE

A separate piece of hardware that is a stiff structure – often hard plastic, that attaches to the handlebars and allows the bike handlebar bag to sit inside. This keeps the bag very stable and stops it from moving around when riding on rough terrain. Some bike handlebar bags will either come with a cradle or it can be bought separately.

EXTERNAL STRAP

A piece of thick strapping material that wraps around the bag. With an external strap, you can clip small attachments onto the outside of the bag or slide gear into the straps such as small tent poles.

WAIST STRAP

A separate strap that can be attached to the bag to allow you to carry it as a shoulder bag or fanny pack. This extra strap makes it easy to carry your bag when you get to a destination and want to take it off the bike.

If you’re trying to figure out what makes the best canoe paddles, then read along to find out which features are the best choice for you. The main difference between canoe and kayak paddles is that canoe paddles are generally one-sided while kayak paddles have blades on both ends. In a canoe, you row the boat on one side at a time, unless you have a companion to paddle with you, so you only need one blade.

From there, you can choose between aluminum or wood paddles and different paddle lengths, depending on your preferences. We explain the main features of these top 10 paddles and how to size your canoe paddle so you know exactly what to look for.

Usually the saying “you get what you pay for” rings true, but this paddle defies that reasoning by giving you exceptional value for the low cost.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CANOE PADDLE

SIZING

The length of your canoe paddle is one of the most important features to consider. You need a paddle that’s proportionate to your height and the shape of your canoe so you can reach the water at the most effective angle. You may need a shorter shaft for a narrow boat or a longer shaft for a wider boat.

Use this detailed explanation of paddle sizing here to help you calculate the right paddle size for you, or you may choose to get an adjustable paddle to accommodate yourself and fellow paddlers.

MATERIAL

Canoe paddles generally come with fiberglass, aluminum, or wood shafts and various blade materials. The materials affect how well your paddle stands up against rocks and river bottoms, how hot or cold the shaft feels in your hands, the heaviness of the paddle, and how much upkeep the paddle requires. Weigh your options against what’s most important to you.

WEIGHT

The weight of your paddle makes all the difference between fatigue and prolonged stamina. Without extra conditioning, a heavy paddle is going to wear your arms out faster than a lighter handle. Manufacturers tend to design canoe paddles to be lightweight and easy to handle, but there’s still quite a difference between a 1lb handle and a 2lb handle. If you intend to travel long distances or have limited upper body strength, choose a lightweight model.

HANDLE TYPE

When you’re paddling for a long time, it’s important to consider the type of handle your canoe paddle has. If you have hand issues like arthritis, carpal tunnel, or poor grip, you want a handle that minimizes fatigue. Most canoe handles are either palm grip or T-grip. Palm grips have a more comfortable, ergonomic shape whereas T-grips offer added leverage in choppier conditions. Learn more about canoe handle types here.

FLOATABLE

Many canoe handles are designed to float in case you lose your grip. They’re easier to locate and retrieve than handles that sink to the bottom. If you’re worried about losing your paddle out on the water, you may want to choose a paddle that floats.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

SHAFT

The long handle portion of the paddle is referred to as the shaft, just like the shaft of a golf club. Paddle shafts are either straight or slightly bent. Straight shafts give you more versatility to learn on because they can be used back, forth, and upside down. Bent shafts, on the other hand, offer a more effective paddling angle.

BLADE

The blade is the lower fin-like portion of the paddle that actually pushes against the water. The ideal blade is durable enough to push against rocks and shorelines and wide enough to maximize every stroke.

T-GRIP

The top of a T-grip handle forms a capital T shape. A T-grip allows you to hold the paddle tighter, giving your more leverage in choppy water conditions. With your fingers wrapped around the handle, you’re less likely to lose your grip than if your palm rests over the top of the handle.

PALM GRIP

A palm grip is shaped with a curve that you can rest your hand over. This type of grip is more ergonomically-friendly for longer, recreation-style paddling. Your hands won’t fall asleep or get fatigued as easily with a palm grip.

ABS PLASTIC

ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a common, inexpensive type of plastic. Though inexpensive, this plastic is very durable and lightweight, so it’s well-suited for a canoe paddle.

BEST FOR: LONG LASTING DURABILITY

Looking for the most elite paddle that will stand the test of time? Look no further.

The Kalliste (pronounced Kuh-List-Uh) by Werner is their most advanced touring paddle ever made. Named after the Greek word meaning “the best”, this exceptionally light paddle is made entirely from carbon fiber and uses an impact resistant technology on the blade’s edges for seriously rugged durability.

Fully loaded with just about every feature that Werner offers, the Kalliste also sports an Adjustable Ferrule System – a mechanism that joins the 2-piece paddle. The benefit here is the ability to feather (or offset) the blades of your paddle in 15° degree increments up to 60° degrees. This allows the greatest amount of customization.

Werner Kalliste Bent

Werner Kalliste Bent

BEST FOR: ERGONOMIC COMFORT

So nice we had to add it twice! Seriously, the Kalliste (pronounced Kuh-List-Uh) is Werner’s best paddle ever made. Incorporating Carbon Fiber as the primary material through the shaft and blades, this paddle is incredibly durable from tip to tip and feels as light as a feather when paddling long distances.

In classical style, the Kalliste Bent Shaft sports asymmetrical blades which help create more paddling power. Because of the physics involved in low-angle paddling, an asymmetrical blade design creates more efficient strokes.

Best suited for those needing some ergonomic comfort, the Kalliste Bent Shaft can help alleviate stress points in the hands, wrists, and forearms and reduce the potential for injury. For those who tend to grip too tightly to their paddle, the Bent Shaft design is a prime choice as it can also help reduce hand fatigue.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING KAYAK PADDLES

LENGTH

When choosing the proper paddle length, the two determining factors are how wide your boat is and the height of the paddler. When falling in between sizes, a shorter paddle is typically better considering the weight will be lighter. Kayakers with a short torso may benefit from sizing up in this situation to increase reach. Use the chart below as a quick reference guide.

SHAFT CONSTRUCTION AND BLADE CONSTRUCTION

When it comes to choosing the best touring kayak paddle, there are only two materials worth considering: Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber. Stay away from Aluminum shafts and Plastic blades as they are much heavier and will cause you to fatigue quicker.

Fiberglass Blades

Considered a premium material, Fiberglass is lighter, stronger, and more durable than Plastic blades. Paddle blades made with Fiberglass are an outstanding choice and meet at the intersection of quality and affordability. At a mid-level price point, Fiberglass blades offer a huge upgrade in quality without top-tier prices.

Carbon Fiber Shafts And Blades

At 3 times stiffer and 10 times stronger than Steel, Carbon Fiber is the crème de la crème of materials used in shafts and blades. Offering the lightest material with the greatest strength and durability, paddle shafts and blades made of Carbon Fiber will feel like an extension of yourself.

When touring long distances, this is the best possible type of material. The lightness of Carbon Fiber cannot be understated – paddling fatigue will never occur because of your paddle.

Some shafts are made of Premium Carbon or from a Carbon Blend – these are the most cost-effective ways to include some of the strength and lightness of Carbon Fiber without breaking the bank. They are a hybrid of sorts: a step up from Fiberglass but not quite the level of pure Carbon Fiber. These shafts are usually paired with Fiberglass blades.

SHAFT SHAPE

Welcome to one of the great debates in the world of paddling: Straight Shaft or Bent Shaft?

Bent Shaft

A recent design style that has taken off tremendously, bent shaft paddles are designed with ergonomic comfort in mind. These paddles reduce hand fatigue for those who have a tendency to grip too tightly. The angle of bent shaft paddles can also reduce the stress points that can occur in the hands, wrists, and forearms and prevent potential injury.

Be forewarned though, most bent shaft paddlers say that it’s almost impossible to switch back to straight shaft. Considering that bent shafts are only made from Carbon Fiber, you’ll be locked into premium paddles for life. Good thing Carbon Fiber lasts for pretty much forever. Just don’t lose your paddle.

Straight Shaft

Historically, kayak paddles have always had a straight shaft. It’s this familiar feel that will translate as you upgrade your paddle from a more basic Aluminum model to a Fiberglass or Carbon Fiber paddle. When paddling with the proper grip (read: a loose grip), you should not experience any stress in your hands, wrists, or forearms.

Many straight shaft enthusiasts find that it’s easier to perform advanced paddle strokes with a traditional straight shaft than with a bent shaft. Since so much time has been spent practicing strokes at the beginner level and muscle memory has been established, many kayakers feel that a new style of shaft throws off their game and forces them to “re-learn” what they have already mastered. It’s not a huge change, but it definitely causes some advanced paddlers to think more about their strokes instead of feeling like second-nature.

SHAFT TYPE

Touring paddles are usually offered in 2-piece setups, but there are occasions where a 4-piece paddle will prove best for you. 2-piece paddles tend to be lighter and stronger than 4-piece paddles, making them ideal for normal conditions. With less moving parts, they also tend to be a tad more reliable. However, 4-piece paddles offer a huge benefit in being able to pack down into small spaces. This is best for those who need to pack their gear for a long hike to the put-in.

FEATHERING

In order to gain the most out of your paddle when touring, consider feathering the blades. Out of the box, kayak paddles are set to be matched (or 0° degree feather), meaning there is no difference in angle between the two blades.

To feather a paddle is to un-match this linear plane and offset the blades from one another. Touring blades can be incrementally adjusted 15° degrees at a time up to limit of either 45° or 60° degrees.

Reasons for feathering include increased mobility and greater stroke efficiency. Ultimately, the choice to feather your paddle or not is a personal preference and it’s suggested that you take the time to feel out which is best for you.

It’s also important to note that wind resistance is not a factor when feathering your paddle. In order for that to prove true, one would need to feather their paddle a full 90° degrees when paddling in headwinds or tailwinds. But seeing as most paddles do not feather that much, and considering that this doesn’t account for crosswinds or how often the wind changes direction, this theory has trouble holding water.

WEIGHT

How far will be you touring? How many days is your trip? These considerations come into play when determining how light of a paddle you need. The longer the trek, the lighter the paddle you’ll want. Even the difference of several ounces can end up making a major difference at the end of a long tour or over several days.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING KAYAK PADDLES

COST

As you learn the fundamentals of kayaking, it’s more important to focus on perfecting your skills than dropping stacks on premium paddles. Save your dollars with a little sense and grab yourself a budget-friendly paddle. The paddles we’ve chosen focus on good quality at a reasonable price. You won’t find us recommending cheap-o products anywhere.

LENGTH

Generally speaking, the length of your paddle will be determined by how tall you are and the width of your kayak (at its widest point). Paddle length is only measured in centimeters. Use the table below for quick reference.

SHAFT CONSTRUCTION

There are three materials that are most commonly used in the construction of kayak paddles: Aluminum, Fiberglass, and Carbon Fiber. Check out the descriptions below to determine which is best for you.

Aluminum

This is the most basic material used in most budget-friendly kayak paddles. As the least expensive option, it provides a lot of strength but tends to be heavy over long distances. For this reason, aluminum shafts are great for recreational paddling but not so much for touring or weekend trips.

If you paddle in cold water regularly, we suggest looking for materials other than aluminum as gripping a cold, metal shaft (even if it is covered in plastic) will be quite uncomfortable.

Fiberglass

Known for its lightness and strength, Fiberglass is used in mid-grade paddles for those stepping up in quality. These are great paddles for touring and whitewater due to their efficiency and durability, respectively.

Carbon Fiber

As the most expensive material, Carbon Fiber is also the lightest and strongest. Typically reserved for long distance touring and extreme whitewater, paddle shafts made from this material tend to be pricey.

Some shafts, however, are now blended with both Fiberglass and Carbon to reinforce and strengthen the shaft without the hefty price tag of pure Carbon Fiber.

SHAFT TYPE

Kayak paddles can come in 3 different types and each has its own pros and cons. Intended use also plays a factor.

1-Piece

Typically reserved for the harsher conditions of whitewater kayaking, 1-piece paddles are solid and typically more durable than 2 or 4-piece paddles. They are limited, however, in their customization. If the blades are feathered (the offset between the right and left blades), the degree is fixed and cannot be changed.

2-Piece

By far the most common type of kayak paddle, 2-piece shafts can provide greater personalization depending on a shaft’s ferrule. The ferrule is simply the mechanism that joins and locks the pieces of a paddle together. Some ferrules allow the paddle to be feathered (the offset between the right and left blades) 0° / 15° / 30° / 45° / 60° degrees in order to maximize mobility as you transfer across your body into the next stroke.

4-Piece

Less common than their 2-piece counterparts, 4-piece paddles offer the ultimate ability to pack down into small spaces. The blades separate from the shaft while the shaft breaks down into two separate pieces.

This option is great for those with inflatable kayaks as the paddle can be stashed away in the inflatable’s hiking pack. 4-piece paddles also make a great back-up paddle on weekend trips since they can be easily stowed in hatches or lashed down to the deck.

PADDLE STYLE

Paddling style is a reference to the blade shape and overall length of a kayak paddle. Each of the two styles are designed for a specific type of kayaking.

Low-Angle

The most common type of paddling, Low-Angle paddles are ideal for fishing, touring, and recreational kayaking. It is a more casual style in which the blades rarely come higher than the participant’s shoulders when paddling. Low-Angle kayak paddles have a long shaft and longer, narrower blades than High-Angle paddles.

High-Angle

Used most often in whitewater kayaking and for racing, High-Angle paddles create a more powerful and aggressive stroke. The blades almost always rise higher than the participant’s shoulders when paddling. High-Angle kayak paddles typically have short, wide blades and a shorter shaft than Low-Angle paddles.

BLADE SHAPE

The blades of a paddle come in two different styles and each has its benefits. When visualizing the symmetry of a kayak blade, imagine the shaft is the “dotted-line” that divides the two planes.

Symmetrical

Blades that mirror each other along the imaginary dotted-line are symmetrical. It doesn’t matter which way they are held because of their perfect symmetry. Most commonly found on canoe and SUP paddles, some kayak paddles still use this design. It’s a good choice for beginners who may have a tendency to hold a paddle upside-down.

Asymmetrical

Asymmetrical blades are by far the most common type of blade shape manufactured and their popularity is due to smart design. Asymmetrical blades are able to generate more power and push deeper into the water since kayak strokes strike the water at a shallow angle.

FEATHERING

When setting up your kayak paddle, some offer the ability to feather the blades. Feathering is the offset between the two blades and is typically found in increments of 15°. A paddle that does not offer feathering or has its adjustable feather set to 0° is known as being matched. If you were to put the paddle on the ground, it would lay perfectly flat.

Feathering is designed to give your wrists more mobility as you transfer into your next stroke. We suggest playing around with different degrees of feathering and finding what suits you best.

Mythbuster: Many articles will assert that feathering is designed to reduce the wind resistance against the blade in the air, allowing it to slice through the wind rather than become like a sail. This is unsubstantiated and doesn’t account for the constantly changing nature of wind, including crosswinds that blow this myth away.

WEIGHT

The weight of a paddle goes back to the materials used in the construction of the shaft. The lighter the material used, the more efficient you will be able to paddle. Think of how a lightweight backpacker counts ounces: a few ounces multiplied over a number of miles adds up to several pounds at the end of the day.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

SHAFT

The long, cylindrical handle of the kayak paddle.

BLADES

The wide, flat ends of a paddle.

FERRULE

T-GRIP

On a canoe or SUP paddle, it is the end (or top) of the shaft that looks like a “T”.

  • Shaft Material: Carbon & Fiberglass
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 92 square inches
Features
  • Adjustable size - 220cm base length expandable up to 240cm
  • Two-piece construction breaks down for easy transportation and storage
  • Durable fiberglass composite blade

TOP OVERALL KAYAK PADDLE

If you’re in search of a paddle that performs exceptionally and is durable, too, look no further than the Pungo.

This two piece paddle is made of half carbon and half fiberglass, which helps to keep it lightweight while retaining strength through the shaft. An innovative locking mechanism holds the separate paddle pieces together snug enough that there is no play, but easy enough even with limited dexterity. Although it’s not the lightest paddle out there, it weighs in at only 970 grams. The fiberglass blades move light and smoothly through the water but are equally sturdy enough for pushing off gravel banks.

What I like most about this paddle is how easy it is to adjust, allowing you to dial in the perfect fit for every situation.

  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 89 square inches
Features
  • Comes with heavy-duty rubber drip rings
  • Feathering is adjustable to 0 or 60 degrees, with left or right hand control

bending branches whisper paddle

BEST FOR: PADDLERS ON A BUDGET

Looking for a quality beginner kayak paddle for a price you can’t beat, listen close for the Whisper.

This aluminum two piece paddle is ideal for learning proper paddling technique and comes in a lightweight package. The shaft has ovalized grips with a versafit coating to ensure you maintain great grip at all times. A durable nylon blade moves through the water without fluttering, so you can paddle farther with ease.

What I like most about the Whisper are the beefy drip rings that keeps the water from pouring into your lap.

Werner Kalliste

Specs
  • Weight: 23 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 99.7 square inches
Features
  • Flexible, Carbon Fiber Shaft (for better performance)
  • Adjustable Feathering System (for adapting to your paddling technique)
  • Foam-Core Blades (for added buoyancy and lighter stroke)
  • Ribless Blade Design (for smoother strokes)
Werner Kalliste

BEST FOR: LIGHT AND BUOYANT STROKES

The Werner Kalliste is the lightest kayak paddle on our list. If you’re looking for a paddle that you’ll hardly feel out on the water, the Kalliste is an excellent choice. This paddle’s flexible carbon fiber shaft is designed to perform better than the competition and the adjustable feathering system will adapt as your paddling technique changes over time. Foam core blades with a ribless back make this paddle more buoyant and, overall, easier to paddle than any of its competitors.

Carlisle Paddles Magic Angler

Specs
  • Weight: 2 lbs 9 oz
  • Shaft Material: Wrapped fiberglass
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: Unavailable
Features
  • Fiberglass shaft and blade withstand rocky impacts
  • Blade cutout frees snagged lines and hooks
  • Two-piece push-button shaft separates for easy packing
  • Three-way adjusting ferrule allows 0- and 60-degree feathering
Carlisle Paddles Magic Angler

BEST FOR: KAYAK FISHING

This is an affordable paddle that can handle the rigors of getting you to your favorite fishing hole.

Carlisle has been making paddle for over 30 years and it shows in the Angler. This paddle is manufactured with a wrapped fiberglass shaft that is comfortable to hold in any temperature. The reinforced asymmetrical blades have a slight curvature, which helps propel you through the water with ease, but can also handle the occasional bump. What sets this paddle apart for anglers in particular are features like the J-hook – located in the blade and intended for removing snags – as well as the ruler in the shaft designed for measuring your catch.

What I like most about this paddle is that Carlisle has added longer shafts to their lineup to accommodate wider boats for fishing.

Werner Cyprus Carbon Bent Shaft

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb 10 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon fiber
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 94.5 square inches
Features
  • Adjustment of feathering angle from 0° - 60° right or left in 15° increments
  • Low-profile button release makes paddle feel like 1 piece
  • Carbon fiber/foam core blades create a distinctive profile that enters and exits the water quietly while adding buoyancy for a light stroke
  • Bent shaft naturally aligns wrists, providing immediate comfort and reducing strain
Werner Cyprus Carbon Bent Shaft

BEST FOR: WHITEWATER MISSIONS

When you need swift powerful strokes to get you through your next rapid, look to the Cyprus Carbon – it was made for the job.

This extremely lightweight paddle features a bent carbon shaft that optimizes paddle control while reducing strain on the wrists. The foam core blades feel light in the water and the spineless back allows you to remove the blade with ease. The mid size asymmetrical blades are designed with power and precision in mind but are not awful to paddle on longer trips too. An adjustable ferrule system allows you to precisely feather the blades as needed in 15 degree increments.

What I like most about the Cyprus Carbon is it is handcrafted in Washington.

Aqua-Bound Sting Ray

Specs
  • Weight: 1 lb 14.5 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 91 square inches
Features
  • Comfortable Shaft Design
  • Reinforced Blades (for added durability)
  • Precision Balanced (for better performance)
  • Collapsible, 4-piece Design (for more compact storage)
Aqua-Bound Sting Ray

BEST FOR: RECREATIONAL TO LIGHT TOURING

The Aqua-Bound Sting Ray carbon kayak paddle is the perfect choice if you’re a recreational kayaker who enjoys light touring in calm waters. The paddle’s lightweight but durable design is comfortable in your hands and the reinforced blades are made to withstand pushing off any rocks or other objects in your way on the water. This paddle has been precision balanced to improve its responsiveness and performance. It is also a two-piece paddle that can be collapsed and stored in your car without taking up too much space.

Werner Tybee

Specs
  • Weight: 36 oz
  • Shaft Material: Fiberglass-Carbon Blend
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 94.25 square inches
Features
  • Flexible Paddle Design (increases comfort and reduces strain)
  • Adjustable Feathering System (for better left or right hand control)
  • Fiberglass-Reinforced Blades (for lighter weight)
  • Asymmetrical Blades (reduces torque and need to grip paddle tightly)
Werner Tybee

BEST FOR: AGGRESSIVE PERFORMANCE IN AN AFFORDABLE PACKAGE

This kayak paddle is designed to perform in more aggressive paddling conditions without breaking the bank to get that type of performance. The creators of this paddle combined fiberglass and carbon to make a flexible paddle that is more comfortable and doesn’t require as much effort. It also has an adjustable feathering system for more variability when the conditions dictate the need for a different blade angle. This paddle’s reinforced blades are lighter but still strong enough to withstand hits against rocks and other boats. The asymmetrical blade design helps to reduce torque and, overall, makes using this paddle much easier on your hands.

Werner Skagit

Specs
  • Weight: 39 oz
  • Shaft Material: Premium Carbon
  • Shaft Type: 4-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 93.75 square inches
Features
  • Low-Angle Blades (easier for paddlers of all sizes and experience levels to use)
  • Stable Blade Shape (for smoother performance)
  • Lightweight, Durable Blades
  • Adjustable For Precise Fitting
Werner Skagit

BEST FOR: FITTING A WIDE RANGE OF PADDLERS

This four-piece kayak paddle is a great option if you need it to adapt to a variety of paddlers. The precision design allows this paddle to be adjusted to fit many paddlers and the lightweight blades make it easy to use for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. The durable design allows this paddle to withstand hits against rocks and other boats. The low-angle blades also make this paddle easy to handle and the blade shape makes for a smoother, more stable paddling experience.

Bending Branches Angler Ace Snap

Specs
  • Weight: 30 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 105 square inches
Features
  • Carbon-Reinforced Blades (for lighter weight and better durability)
  • Adjustable Feathering System (for different paddle angles)
  • Oversized Paddle Blades (for more power)
  • Built-In Tape Measurer On Shaft (for measuring your catch!)
Bending Branches Angler Ace Snap

BEST FOR: DISCERNING ANGLERS

This kayak paddle is a great choice for you if you’re an experienced angler who likes to cover a lot of ground on each fishing expedition. The paddle’s reinforced blades can take a beating but don’t add a ton of weight to the overall feel of the paddle. The angle of the paddle blades can easily be adjusted to your liking and the oversized blades make it easier to generate power more quickly. Once you’ve hauled in your catch, you can use the built-in tape measurer on the paddle shaft to measure its size.

Aqua-Bound Tango Fiberglass

Specs
  • Weight: 26 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber
  • Shaft Type: 2-piece
  • Blade Surface Area: 96 square inches
Features
  • Fiberglass Blades (to save weight)
  • Lightweight Paddle Shaft (for effortless paddling)
  • Two-Button Release System (for easy breakdown)
  • Rubber Drip Rings (to keep your lap dry)
Aqua-Bound Tango Fiberglass

BEST FOR: LIGHTWEIGHT PADDLING

The Aqua-Bound Tango Fiberglass 2-piece kayak paddle is the second-lightest paddle on our list, which makes it the best choice if weight is your primary concern. The paddle’s fiberglass blades and carbon fiber shaft help to make it a lightweight option that doesn’t sacrifice on durability. A simple two-button release system makes this paddle easy to break down and store in a compact space while rubber drip rings keep water from falling into your lap while you’re out on the water.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A KAYAK PADDLE

SIZING

Picking the right size for your kayak paddle is largely a consideration of your body stature and the nature of paddling you intend to do. The first measurement you’ll need is your torso length. This is measured by tracing the tops of your Iliac crest (hip bones) around to your spine. Then, measure from there up to the bony prominence at the back of your neck (generally the last of the cervical vertebrae in your spine).

Once you have this number, you’ll be able to determine the general range of paddle length you’re looking for. Keep in mind that every manufacturer has different recommendations for paddle sizing, so be careful to look at the sizing guide for each brand before settling on the length that’s correct for you. If you’re looking for a general sizing guide, REI has a great one here.

The other factor to consider is your paddling style, or the nature of paddling you intend to do. In general, this can be broken down into high-angle and low-angle paddling. Low-angle paddling is what you’ll typically be doing on flatwater such as lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. High-angle paddling is what you’ll be doing if you plan on doing more whitewater or ocean kayaking.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to get yourself a slightly longer paddle if you’re mostly going to be doing low-angle paddling. This will make it easier to generate power without leaning or lifting the opposing blade too high in the air. On the contrary, high-angle paddlers usually gravitate towards shorter paddles because it makes it easier to get another blade into the water on the other side of their kayak when they’re moving quickly through swiftwater.

BLADE MATERIALS

For our purposes, we’re going to focus on the pros and cons of the following blade construction materials: plastic and/or nylon, fiberglass, and carbon fiber.

Plastic/Nylon

The major advantage of buying a kayak paddle with plastic or nylon blades is price. These are going to be the most affordable paddles. However, plastic or nylon blades are more susceptible to cracking and deteriorate more quickly when exposed to sunlight.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass blades perform very well and are more durable than plastic or nylon. Paddles with fiberglass blades are going to be in the middle of the spectrum in terms of price and they are going to weigh less than plastic blades. Rigid fiberglass blades also perform more efficiently in the water.

Carbon Fiber

If you really want the best performance out there, you can’t beat a paddle with carbon fiber blades. These are going to be the lightest paddles on the market and their extra rigidity makes for excellent energy transfer. However, these paddles are by far the most expensive on the market today.

SHAFT MATERIALS

Although some of the most affordable paddles out there have plastic shafts, this is increasingly rare. More commonly, you’ll find aluminum used in the paddles that fall on the lower end of the pricing scale. Aluminum will stand up to the rigors of paddling and provide good performance, but will tend to heat up or cool down more than other materials.

The best kayak paddles have either fiberglass or carbon fiber shafts. They are durable, strong, and, most importantly, very lightweight. Some of the paddles in the medium price range actually offer a blend of fiberglass and carbon fiber in the paddle shaft design.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

PADDLE SHAFT

The paddle shaft is where you hold your kayak paddle. It is the aluminum, fiberglass, or carbon fiber rod that connects the two blades and where the drip rings are located.

PADDLE BLADES

The paddle blades are located at either end of the paddle shaft. These are what you’ll use to generate power while sitting in your kayak. Most paddle blades are curved and are designed to scoop water with every stroke to push your kayak forward. In general, the concave side of the paddle blade should be facing you as you’re sitting in your kayak.

DRIP RINGS

Drip rings are usually made of rubber and they go around the paddle shaft. They should be placed outside of your hands (or between your hands and the paddle blades). When you lift one blade into the air (after it has been in the water), water will fall towards your hands. The drip rings catch a large percentage of this water and make it fall back down into the lake or river you’re paddling on before it falls in your lap.

FEATHERING

The blades of a kayak paddle can be matched at the same angle. They can also be feathered so that they are at different angles when you’re holding your paddle in a neutral position. When blades are feathered (at different angles), it reduces wind resistance on the blade that is out of the water. All of the best kayak paddles can be adjusted to be matched or feathered. Most feathering systems are adjustable at 15-degree increments.

LEFT OR RIGHT-HAND CONTROL

This refers to which hand is used to rotate the paddle when the blades are feathered. The paddles included in this list allow you to adjust the feathering angles for either left or right-hand control.

TOP OVERALL HELMET

For a top-of-the-line half-shell model with all the bells and whistles you’d ever want, you’d be hard pressed to find a higher quality alternative.

The Manifest Spherical isn’t crafted with your standard MIPS liner — instead, Giro integrates a spherical rotational impact system that comprises two individual foam shells that are connected to each other and rotate against each other in the event of a rotational fall. There are large vents all the way around that provide for ample noggin’ breathing and a foam shell that provides for extra coverage in all the right places.

What I like most about the Spherical is that if offers sunglass storage.

Giro Chronicle MIPS

Features
  • Plush Coolmax Padding (to keep your head cool and comfortable for your entire ride)
  • Has MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System)
  • One-Handed Adjustment

BEST FOR: TECHNICAL DESCENTS

Founded in 1985, Giro is a United States based cycling and snowsports company. Their offerings include eyewear, apparel, and of course, helmets. The Chronicle features the MIPS rotational impact safety layer, so you can feel confident wearing this helmet on even the steepest of descents.

The helmet is secured in place by a proprietary dial-in system that can be adjusted with one hand. The fourteen vents channel the air throughout the helmet with ease. The Chronicle is designed to be goggle compatible and the integrated visor can be lifted, allowing for placement of goggles, and then lowered before heading downhill. The plush Coolmax padding allows for extra moisture wicking in addition to the extra comfort qualities.

BEST FOR: TRAIL RIDING

Riders in need of a high-quality helmet with trail-specific features at a mid-range price, look to the Speedframe — it’s everything you’re looking for.

Despite being middle-of-the-pack in terms of cost, the Speedframe Pro packs a punch in terms of trail-specific features. Fox outfitted this helmet with a MIPs rotational impact system and dual-density EPS foam, making for a noggin protector thats effective and comfortable. With an adjustable visor and harness system, it’s easy to dial in the perfect fit.

What I like most about the Speedframe is how comfortable it is to wear.

  • Vents: 18
  • Visor: No
Features
  • Eye Garage Keeps Your Sunglasses In Place
  • Embedded Recco Reflector Enhances Radio Signals From Search-And-Rescue Recco Detectors
  • Proprietary Impact Protection System (SPIN)

BEST FOR: CROSS-COUNTRY (XC)

Less than twenty years old, POC is a Swedish company that creates products that help create a safer experience for active people in sports that can sustain head and body injuries like skiing and cycling.

This is the only helmet in this guide that doesn’t feature a visor as this helmet is designed for the XC (cross-country) rider and a visor isn’t as much of a necessity as the need for a lightweight model with ample ventilation. POC helmets feature the brand’s proprietary SPIN rotational impact protection system which is designed to reduce the amount of force transmitted to the head and brain during a crash. The eye garage is a cool feature that helps to keep your sunglasses in place. Only the POC helmets in this guide feature the embedded RECCO reflectors which, when used in conjunction with RECCO detectors, can help locate lost or injured riders.

Troy Lee Designs Stage MIPS

BEST FULL-FACE MODEL FOR DOWNHILL RIDING

If you’re looking for the lightest downhill-certified full-faced helmet on the market — look no further.

The Troy Lee Designs Stage is the brand’s first full-face style helmet in its line-up — and it’s an impressive feat, to say the least. This helmet features MIPS rotational impact protection, 25 vents that maximize airflow, and a magnetic Fidlock system that makes it easy to buckle on and off.

What I like most about this helmet is how lightweight it is for a full face model.

Smith Venture MIPS

  • Vents: 20
  • Visor: Yes
Features
  • Adjustable Fit
  • Proprietary Venting System Aids In Preventing Fogging On Sunglasses
  • Has MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System)

BEST FOR: ALL-MOUNTAIN RIDING

What began in 1965 to create better snow goggles has morphed into a global company that creates engineered sunglasses, goggles, and yes, helmets. The Venture contains the MIPS layer that helps to reduce rotational motion of the brain during impact and lessening the severity of the crash.

Created using in-mold construction (where the outer shell is bonded to the foam in a mold utilizing steam and pressure), the result is a lightweight and durable helmet for the full spectrum of mountain biking. Using a proprietary adjustable fit system, the helmet will remain secure over any terrain. The twenty vents not only create an aerodynamic effect, but also perpetuate cooling as you ride. The helmet also has an integrated visor to provide additional protection from the sun.

Troy Lee Designs A1 MIPS Classic

  • Weight: 12.7 oz
  • Vents: 15
  • Visor: Yes
Features

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL RIDING

Troy Lee Designs began over three decades ago in California. The brand now creates a wide range of products for the motocross and mountain biking industry including helmets, apparel, and protective gear.

One of the many helmets in this guide featuring MIPS, the A1 also features eight pressurized intake passages which draw in cool air while the rear outlets work to exhaust the heat that builds up under the helmet away from your head. The adjustable stabilizer on the back of the helmet helps to fine tune the fit. The adjustable visor on the front provides additional protection on the trails.

POC Tectal Race SPIN

Specs
  • Weight: 13 oz.
  • Vents: 15
  • Visor: Yes
Features
  • Adjustable Visor
  • Proprietary Impact Protection System (SPIN)
  • Integrated Goggles Clip

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL RIDING

Founded in 2005, the Swedish brand POC got its beginning addressing ski racing safety. That same mission and technology has been expanded to provide safety measures for other gravity fueled sports, including mountain biking.

The Tectal Race also features the proprietary SPIN rotational impact system. The SPIN pads allow the helmet to move with the head and therefore reduce the force of impact. Paired with an adjustable visor, the Tectal Race features a goggles clip for securing the eyewear on race day or just for intense riding. Like the other POC helmet, this model also features an embedded RECCO reflector for assisting in the location of injured or lost riders.

Sweet Protection Bushwhacker II

  • Vents: 13
  • Visor: Yes
Features
  • Adjustable Fit With Turn-Dial Mechanism
  • Ultralight
  • Optimized Venting Without Exposing Most Vulnerable Areas Of The Head
Sweet Protection Bushwhacker II

BEST FOR: DOWNHILL AND CROSS-COUNTRY

Harkening back to 1988, Sweet Protection got its start in Norway and has been creating protective gear for adventure sports ever since. What began as a school paper created the basis of the Sweet Protection mantra: Stronger, Lighter, Better.

The Bushwhacker II is created using a five-piece in-mold plastic shell fused with shock absorbing foam to create a highly protective casing for your cranium. The helmet is secured utilizing a proprietary turn-dial mechanism. It’s one of the lightest helmets in this guide and even though it only has thirteen vents, the helmet is designed to efficiently channel the air to keep your head cool even under pressure. The foam comfort pads inside the helmet are wrapped in a hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking fabric.

Bell Sixer MIPS

Specs
  • Weight: 14.5 oz.
  • Vents: 26
  • Visor: Yes
Features
  • Has MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System)
  • Four-Position Adjustable Visor
  • Integrated Breakaway Camera Mount
Bell Sixer MIPS

BEST FOR: MAXIMUM VENTILATION

Perhaps one of the most recognized names in the bike helmet market, Bell Helmets got its start in the 1950s making race car helmets. Since those humble beginnings, the brand has continually pushed the envelope in creating quality protective gear for a myriad of sports.

The Sixer helmet features the MIPS protective layer for reducing the rotational forces associated with an impact. This helmet sports the most vents of any helmet in this guide with twenty-six. Other features worth noting include the 4-position adjustable visor and an integrated breakaway camera mount. Looking for a particular color? No worries. The helmet comes in a plethora of color options.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A MOUNTAIN BIKE HELMET

TYPE

When choosing a bike helmet, it’s important to consider the type of riding you plan to do. Helmets designed for road cycling don’t typically provide enough protection for the terrain associated with mountain biking. The three main types of mountain biking are cross-country (XC), all-mountain, and downhill.

Cross-Country (XC)

Cross-country riding involves covering a lot of ground with limited technical terrain. This can involve lots of uphill riding where adequate ventilation is key to surviving the climb. The POC Octal X SPIN is a great choice for XC riding.

All-Mountain

All-mountain riding involves more technical downhill terrain and therefore should include more protection than what the average XC or road helmet can provide. All-mountain helmets often provide more coverage around the temples, the back, and the sides of the head. They often include more padding as well. The Smith Venture MIPS and Troy Lee Designs A1 MIPS are good examples of all-mountain helmets.

Downhill

Downhill riding is found in most bike parks and the bulk of the riding involves careening down rocky and technical terrain. We didn’t include any of the full face mask models in this guide as they can be super hot if any pedaling is involved. The POC Tectal Race SPIN is an excellent option that is on our list, as it also includes a goggle clip for securing your eyewear while racing or aggressive riding.

HELMET SIZE AND FIT

No two heads are alike. Therefore, there is no better way to ensure proper fit than trying on a multitude of helmets to find the one that fits your lid the best. With that said, helmets come in different sizes and there is no one size fits all when it comes to finding the right one for your unique head shape. In preparation, you can know the size of your head prior to searching manufacturers.

How to Measure Your Head for a Helmet

First, find a flexible measuring tape (the kind that a seamstress and tailor would use) and measure the circumference around your head just above your ears and roughly one-inch above your eyebrows. The measurement should include the largest part of your head. Make sure to record your results in both inches and centimeters (or convert). This number should fall within the range of one of the helmet sizes.

Fit is crucial to ensuring that your helmet performs at its maximum potential. If the helmet is too tight, you’ll be prone to seeking a resolution throughout your entire ride. If it’s too loose, you will possibly subject yourself to the helmet not working properly in the event of an accident. A helmet should fit snug without being too restrictive. Most premium helmets come with a form of adjustment dial on the back which allows you to dial-in the fit and most can be adjusted with or without gloves.

VENTILATION

Ventilation is crucial whether you are pounding out the miles on the uphill or shooting down the slopes at a bike park. It’s easy to work up a sweat even riding the fast downhills and having an option to allow for heat dispersal is paramount. As you can tell from the list above, there is a wide range of options ranging from thirteen to twenty-six vents. Optimal ventilation isn’t as basic as looking at the number of vents, though it’s a good place to start. Some helmets might have a lower number of vents but more adequately move air from the front to the back.

SAFETY

MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is found on many of the helmets in this guide like the Giro Chronicle and the Bontrager Rally. Other proprietary alternatives to MIPS include SPIN (both POC helmets in this guide) and those found in the Sweet Protection and Shred helmets.

In addition to adding a steeper price tag to the cost of the helmet, the advantage of these safety systems is that they add a layer of protection. With MIPS, a low-friction layer is added to the helmet that allows the head to move 10-15mm within the helmet in all directions. This is important during an angled impact as it reduces the rotational motion to the brain.

COST

If your budget is limited, cut corners elsewhere and splurge in the helmet category. You only have one brain and spending a little extra to ensure you survive a potentially high impact crash is worth the investment. There are options that are relatively inexpensive, but you need to ask yourself if those models are going to offer you the best level of protection.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

MIPS

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. For more information, read the paragraph above about safety.

RECCO REFLECTOR

This advanced rescue technology involves the use of a RECCO detector. It’s advantageous in the event of an avalanche or when someone becomes lost in the outdoors. The RECCO detector emits a directional radar signal and the reflector replies with an echo. Rescuers are then able to zero in on the potential victim. These reflectors are available in apparel as well as both POC helmets in this guide.

BOA

BOA is a performance fit system that allows users to dial-in for a precision fit. To loosen, you just have to pull up on the dial. To engage, push in and dial to the desired resistance and it will hold indefinitely. This system is used in a multitude of products including footwear, helmets, and medical applications.

IN-MOLD CONSTRUCTION

Known by other names like in-molded, molded in the shell, and other proprietary names, the technique is relatively the same. A thin outer piece of plastic is placed in a mold and foam is injected. Under pressure and steam, the foam expands and bonds with the plastic, creating the helmet shape.

VISOR

A lot of mountain bike helmets now feature either a fixed or adjustable visor. This addition can provide additional protection from the sun or another layer of protection from rogue limbs and branches while riding down the trails.

Werner Skagit FG

BEST FOR: RECREATIONAL USE ON FLATWATER

This two-piece paddle is made to be broken down into two smaller pieces with the simple push of a button. This makes it much easier to store in your car when moving from one paddling location to another. It also features stronger paddle blades that are reinforced with nylon to resist chips and breaks. The combination of carbon and fiberglass in the paddle shaft make it comfortable to grip and use, even if you’re out for a full day on the water.

Aqua-Bound Manta Ray Posi-Lok

Specs

  • Shaft Material: Carbon Fiber
  • Shaft Design: Straight
  • Shaft Type: 2-Piece

Aqua-Bound Manta Ray Posi-Lok

BEST FOR: ATHLETIC TOURING AND WORKOUT PADDLING

The Manta Ray from Aqua-Bound is a great option for anyone looking for an extremely lightweight paddle. The paddle can be broken down using a two-button release system, which also allows you to adjust the feather angle as you get more comfortable and try out different paddling techniques.

Feathering a paddle (or changing the feather angle) simply means changing the angle of the paddle blades in relation to one another, rather than simply leaving them straight. The paddle blades are made out of carbon fiber, which makes them stiffer and stronger. This means a smoother and more effective paddling experience for the user.

Bending Branches Angler Classic

  • Shaft Type: 2-Piece

Bending Branches Angler Classic

BEST FOR: KAYAK FISHING BEGINNERS

If you’re tired of fishing from shore or worrying about the logistics of getting out on a motor boat, this is a great kayak paddle to help you fish easily from your kayak. The fiberglass design makes it durable against drops and strong enough to help you pull in a large catch. The built-in fish hook retriever helps you free a snagged hook without having to cut your precious tackle loose altogether.

Werner Camano

Specs
  • Weight: 27.25 oz
  • Shaft Material: Carbon and Fiberglass Blend
  • Shaft Design: Straight
  • Shaft Type: 2-Piece
Features
  • Super Lightweight Design
  • Perfect Balance of Weight and Durability
  • Highly Visible Paddle Blades
Werner Camano

BEST FOR: LONGER PADDLING TRIPS

The Camano paddle from Werner is the lightest paddle on our list. The makers used a combination of fiberglass and carbon to make a paddle that won’t cause excessive fatigue during a long day on the water. That blend of fiberglass and carbon also ensures that this paddle stands up against the rigors of being transported and stored when not in use. Additionally, the paddle blades are translucent so that they glow brilliantly on the water to make you more visible to other watercraft.

Bending Branches Bounce X-Grip

Specs
  • Weight: 37 oz
  • Shaft Material: Aluminum
  • Shaft Design: Straight
  • Shaft Type: 2-Piece
Features
  • Non-Slip Grips
  • Durable Design
  • Heavy-Duty Drip Rings (prevents water from dripping into your kayak)
Bending Branches Bounce X-Grip

BEST FOR: NO-NONSENSE BEGINNERS

The Bounce paddle from Bending Branches tops our list because its innovative design pays attention to the detail that many beginners struggle with the most: paddle grip. This paddle includes yellow grip areas that make it easier to grasp and use the paddle to the best of your ability. Another beneficial feature of this paddle is the heavy-duty rubber drip rings that reduce the amount of water that runs down the shaft of your paddle and falls into your lap while you’re paddling.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING YOUR FIRST KAYAK PADDLE

SIZING

Choosing the right size kayak paddle is largely a function of your height and the width of your kayak. If you have a wider boat, for example, you’ll want to choose a longer paddle. Taller paddlers should also choose longer paddles, even if you’ll be using a narrower kayak.

Each kayak paddle manufacturer will have different suggestions for the right paddle size for you, depending on those two factors (your height and your kayak’s width). Be sure to check the website of any brand you like to find the right size kayak paddle for you.

WEIGHT

When you’re just starting out, you might not feel the difference between a paddle that weighs 34 ounces and one that weighs 29.5 ounces. But as you gain experience and start to envision longer paddling trips, weight becomes more important.

A heavier paddle will cause more fatigue over the course of a full day of paddling. So, if you suspect you might really get into kayaking and try something like an overnight paddling trip in the future, you’ll want to consider a paddle that’s a bit more lightweight.

SHAFT MATERIALS

The three major materials that you’ll see in a paddle shaft are aluminum, carbon, and fiberglass. Plastic paddle shafts are rare and should be avoided. Aluminum is a highly serviceable, cost-effective option. When you get into paddles made with carbon, fiberglass, or a combination of both, you’ll find paddles that are lighter and also offer better performance. The only downside is that their expensive price will reflect their ability to perform better than aluminum paddles.

SHAFT DESIGN

Kayak paddles are either made with a straight shaft or a bent shaft. Bent shafts have a kink that serves to position your hands at a more ergonomic angle while paddling. This can serve to reduce discomfort and fatigue in your joints over time, but it’s hard to get used to operating a paddle with a bent shaft if you haven’t done much kayaking in the past. Straight shafts, as you might imagine, are straight across and more user-friendly for beginners.

FEATHER ANGLE

The blades of a kayak paddle are either matched or feathered. When they are matched, they share the same angle in relation to the water’s surface, regardless of how you’re holding and using the paddle. When the blades are feathered, their angles in relation to the water will differ, which makes using them more difficult for beginners. Paddles that offer various feathering options, however, will allow you to get comfortable as a beginner and also progress with your skills without having to buy a new paddle down the road.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

PADDLE SHAFT

The paddle shaft connects the two blades on either end. It is the area where your hands grip the paddle in order to use it effectively. The paddle shafts of the paddles mentioned above break down into two distinct parts, with a push-button mechanism keeping them connected when you’re paddling.

PADDLE BLADES

The paddle blades are located at either end of the paddle shaft. They are inserted into the water to move your kayak in the desired direction.

DRIP RINGS

Every time you place one of your paddle blades into the water and then remove it to use the other, water from that paddle blade will run down the paddle shaft towards your hands. Drip rings are placed where the paddle blade meets the paddle shaft in order to reduce the amount of water that drips down onto your hands.

POWER FACE

This term refers to the side of the paddle blade that is used to generate power in your kayak. In most kayak paddles, this is the curved, or concave, face of the paddle blade that serves to scoop the water and move it in your desired direction.

GRIPS

Some kayak paddles have specific grips that are designed differently than the rest of the paddle shaft. These grips help you hold onto the paddle, even if you experience fatigue.
