BEST FOR ZERO DEGREE NIGHTS

If you want to guarantee your warmth on super cold nights, you’ve gotta check out the Trestles 0 Sleeping Bag from Marmot. Not only will this bag keep you warm on the coldest of bikepacking trips, it is also made to be super plush and comfy and still weighs under five pounds. Plus, the price is right, especially for a bag with such a low temperature rating.

In addition to its great little set of basic features, this bag has some tricky features, too. (Tricky in a good way, you know: It’s Tricky, Tricky, Tricky). It has not one, but two zippers to aid in easy ventilation. It has both a 3D hood and foot space, which work to envelope your face, provide extra room for your feet, and keep you as warm as possible.

One of this bag’s most unique features is its external pocket that makes storing your nighttime essentials, like a flashlight or cell phone, easy to find in the dark. This bag also comes in three sizes — regular, long, and wide-long, so you can customize your perfect fit.

Big Agnes Lost Dog

Big Agnes Lost Dog

BEST FOR: THE TOSSER AND TURNER

If you tend to toss and turn, wrestle with your pillow, or get separated from your sleeping pad when you camp, the Big Agnes Lost Dog has your back (figuratively and literally). This bag is made to keep even the most extreme tosser and turner comfortable while they sleep.

It has several features to help all the components of a good night’s sleep stay firmly in place, even as you wiggle around inside. It attaches to your thermal sleeping pad (be sure to check fit measurements listed in the specs to ensure compatibility) so that as long as you stay in the bag, you’ll stay on the pad, too.

It also has a “pillow barn” that keeps your pillow secure all night, and its roomy jacket-style hood allows you to comfortably move your head from side to side, or cinch up tight when it gets really cold. To top it all off, this bag is made for plush comfort and has a super reasonable price tag.

The North Face One Bag

The North Face One Bag

BEST FOR: VARYING CONDITIONS

Not really into spending the cash on two or three different sleeping bags for the different weather conditions you may experience on different bikepacking trips? Don’t want to choose just one bag that will leave you slightly too cold on some nights and a little too warm on others? The North Face One Bag is, well…your one bag solution!

This nifty sleeping bag comes with three different layers that can be combined or used on their own to provide the ultimate temperature control in warm, cool, and cold conditions. Pack just one or bring all three and cozy up. With the quality and versatility of this bag, you’ll never need to buy another sleeping bag again!

Know that there may be a bit of a learning curve to figure out how the layers unzip and zip together, and if you do bring all three with you, while they’re still impressively lightweight, they will take up a good chunk of space in your pack.

Therm-A-Rest Questar

Specs
  • Weight: 2 lb. 3 oz.
  • Shape: Mummy
  • Temperature Rating (F): 20
  • Insulation Type: Down
  • Compressed Volume: 5.4 L
Features
  • Special Down Insulation Blend Repels Water And Dries Super Fast
  • Unbeatable Warmth To Weight Ratio
  • Trademarked “Toe-asis” Provides A Pocket Of Warm Down To Quickly Warm Cold Feet
Therm-A-Rest Questar

BEST FOR: THE ULTRALIGHT BIKEPACKER

This bag has two very important qualities for the serious bikepacker: it is super lightweight and it is also super warm. Built for temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit and weighing in at just over two pounds, the Therm-A-Rest Questar Sleeping Bag is a dream come true.

Not only is this sleeping bag super warm and lightweight, it is also water resistant and has a quick drying fill and outer fabric layer. Its smart construction is designed to minimize cold spots and provide an abundance of heat in the places you need it most. It also has a snag-free zipper system and an external pocket to store your nighttime essentials. This sleeping bag does come at a higher cost than the others on this list, but if you’re serious about bikepacking (or want to be!), it is definitely well worth the purchase.

REI Co-op Helio Sack

  • Weight: 1 lb. 9 oz.
  • Shape: Semi Rectangular
  • Temperature Rating (F): 50
  • Insulation Type: Synthetic
  • Compressed Volume: 3.1 L
Features
  • Ultralight And Super Compressible -- You’ll Barely Know It’s In Your Pack
  • Short Side Zipper Works As An Arm Hole And Vent
  • A Moisture And Stain Resistant Finish Keeps Your Bag Clean And Dry
REI Co-op Helio Sack

BEST FOR: WARM WEATHER BIKEPACKING

While the primary goal of any sleeping bag is to keep you warm at night, you don’t always need one made with heavy down. In fact, on warmer nights, a heavy down bag will have you waking up in a sweaty frenzy, and no one wants to deal with that. That’s why we’ve included the REI Co-Op Helio Sack on our list of best bikepacking sleeping bags. It’s perfect for your warm weather trips!

This sleeping bag comes with some really great features and a price that is truly unbeatable. For starters, it has a relaxed, semi rectangular shape that won’t overly restrict you, and two zippers: one is your standard long zipper, and the other is short so you can vent in air without totally unzipping and tangling up while you sleep.

One of this bag’s most unique features is its drawcords. There are two, one for neck and the other for hood, and each is shaped differently so you can make easy adjustments in the dark. To top it all off, it comes with both a compression sack for travel and a bigger, breathable sack for off-season storage.

Just know that if you plan to do any cool or cold weather bikepacking, you’ll need a second, warmer sleeping bag, too.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKEPACKING SLEEPING BAGS

WEIGHT AND COMPRESSED VOLUME

However, as  a bikepacker, there are certainly reasons you might opt for a lighter one. As you’ll find (if you don’t already know) when traveling by bicycle, you have extremely limited space and a limited maximum weight, as well. Lighter bags preserve space and weight in your pack so you have more room for other trip essentials. Heavier bags don’t compress as well and take up more space and weight, but tend to be warmer.

SHAPE

There are two main bikepacking sleeping bag shapes: mummy and semi rectangular.

Mummy bags are considered a more “advanced” bag shape because they prioritize low space and weight, high warmth, and they do not necessarily prioritize roominess or comfort.

Semi Rectangular bags, on the other hand, tend to be a little bit bigger and weigh a little more than the mummy bags, but as a trade off, you’ll get more wiggle room at the base of the bag and therefore a little bit more comfort.

INSULATION

There are two main types of insulation found in bikepacking sleeping bags: synthetic and down.

Down insulation is considered the warmest and highest quality. It is made from goose feathers. It is also the most expensive type of insulation.

Synthetic insulation also has the ability to provide a great deal of warmth, though it is man-made insulation. It tends to be cheaper than down.

TEMPERATURE RATING

When viewing the specs of various bikepacking sleeping bags, you may notice that there are two ratings that relate to the bag’s ability to keep you warm: the temperature rating and the comfort rating.

For simplicity, we have listed the bag’s temperature rating only. This rating indicates the temperature at which the bag will keep the average sleeper warm. The comfort rating, on the other hand, indicates the temperature at which the bag might keep a cold sleeper warm. If you tend to get cold easily, especially while you sleep, be sure to keep that comfort temperature in mind! You can read more about temperature ratings and how sleeping bags are tested here.

PRO TIP

Not sure the best way to care for your sleeping bag? Proper care and washing can greatly extend the longevity of the product. Read all about storage, washing, and general sleeping bag care here.

SPECS AND FEATURES EXPLAINED

The hardtail Trail 6 features an aluminum construction with middle-of-the-pack components that perform well on cross-country terrain. This bike is equipped with a Suntour XCT fork and a hydraulic lock-out feature and the 8-speed drivetrain is paired with Shimano front and rear derauilleurs.

It is relatively lightweight and boasts progressive geometry, which allows you to maintain control at high speeds. Two Tektro mechanical disc brakes give you all the stopping power you could need and the frame is compatible with internally routed dropped posts, as well, although they’re not included with purchase.

The Marin San Quentin is designed to handle it all — from steep rocks  to bold jumps, fast berms, and everything in between. So if you’re the type who wants to tackle those extreme rides, this bike is a great choice for you.

The bike’s tough aluminum frame is built to take a beating, and its powerful front suspension will make sure you don’t. Its tubeless-ready wheels protect against flat tires on rocky terrain and they also provide great traction. This bike also has an incredible value. There is just one notable downside — it has less suspension travel than some of the other bikes on our list (75mm), so if you plan to hit the bumps a lot, be prepared to invest in a seat cushion or brace for impact.

Liv Tempt 3

BEST FOR: SWITCHING SUSPENSION TYPE

The big draw of this bike is its unique ability to act as a chameleon when it comes to suspension. Ride the tough stuff as a hardtail (front suspension) bike, or use the lockout feature to turn suspension off when you want a rigid (no suspension) bike for your climbs.

The Liv Temp 3 also comes with a range of other desirable features and a super reasonable price tag! It boasts premium stopping power with its hydraulic braking system and a 16 gear drivetrain for all different kinds of terrain. Oh yeah, and we can’t forget to tell you that it comes in two awesome colors for the trail: a rockin’ light blue and metallic green.

A bike like this one is great for beginners and intermediates alike, because who doesn’t want to have the ability to stop on a dime out there on the trails? Whether you’re new to the sport and are still a little bit hesitant, or you’ve been in the game for a while and are beginning to conquer more difficult terrain, this bike can help you feel safe and confident at whatever level you’re riding. Plus, it has a huge gear range (21 to be exact) to help you take on climbs and descents like a pro, 100mm of suspension travel for a super smooth ride, and a cool blue finish that will have you looking fly as ever out there. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MOUNTAIN BIKE UNDER $1000

FIT FOR PURPOSE

One of the distinguishing characteristics of mountain bikes is their individual geometry. Different frames are intended for different purposes, such as trail, cross country, and downhill (see below for an explanation of each). Entry level and cheaper bikes, like the ones on this list, are almost always tailored to the trail or cross country rider. Those seeking a high-impact downhill bike may need to seek a different type of bike than can be found on this list.

RIDE STYLE

Think of Trail Riding as the most casual and beginner-friendly style of mountain biking. This is a less technical style of riding, and may include a variety of low intensity terrain styles such as wide trails and dirt roadways. Both hardtail (front suspension) and rigid (no suspension) bikes work for this ride style.

Cross Country Mountain Biking is your next step up in terms of rider skill level. Think steeper climbs and more rugged terrain. Again, both hardtail and rigid bikes can work for this style of ride.

Downhill Mountain Biking is an advanced style of riding that includes steep drops and intense terrain. It typically requires a top tier bike to go with it, which comes at a higher price than those found on this list.

FRAME MATERIALS

Aluminum is the most common frame material. It is both cheap and easy to manufacture, but that doesn’t mean it is low quality. In fact, aluminum is considered to be an industry standard, especially on entry-level bikes, and is both strong and lightweight.

Steel is super strong and extremely flexible, but is used less commonly because it is more expensive and more difficult to manufacture than aluminum.

Carbon Fiber is very light and very strong and is used primarily in high-end bikes. None of the bikes listed here are manufactured with Carbon Fibre.

SUSPENSION

Think of suspension like the “shocks” on your car that reduce the impact of bumps on the roadway. Suspension on a bike performs the same job — it reduces the impact of trail irregularities such as roots, rocks, and other debris.

Rigid bikes have no suspension. They’re great for terrain that has few irregularities, like flat dirt trails. Many riders also prefer this style of suspension even on tougher terrain because they feel it gives an added sense of control. Plus, rigid bikes tend to be cheaper than bikes featuring the other suspension styles.

Hardtail bikes have front suspension only. They’re a great “in-between” bike that is not 100% rigid. They also don’t come with the high-end price tag of full suspension bikes.

Full Suspension bikes have shock absorbing properties on both the front and rear. They’re typically much more expensive, and for that exact reason are not included on this list.

WHEELS

Choosing the right size wheels for your mountain biking needs will ensure that your ride is smooth and enjoyable every time and is an essential part of choosing which bike is right for you.

29’ Wheels aid in speed and getting through/over trail irregularities. They are usually tailored to the cross-country rider since they perform well on higher-level terrain and riding style. They’re also suitable for the taller mountain biker since they make the bike a bit bigger than the smaller wheel sizes.

27.5” Wheels are a bit easier to control than the big, bad 29-incher’s, which is why they are better suited to narrower, more technical terrain. They’re also great for shorter mountain bikers because (in just the opposite way of bigger wheels) they make the bike a little bit smaller.

Plus-Sized or Oversized Tires are most common on 27.5” wheels. Plus-size tires are larger than normal tires and can be run at lower pressures. They absorb shock and grip the trail, but are heavier than a standard tire.

Tubeless Tires do not have an inner tube; instead they use a sealant. This helps to reduce flat tires when riding. These can be run at a lower pressure and are often lighter weight.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

TRAVEL

“Travel” refers to how far the suspension moves up and down while riding; The higher the travel, the more “give” you have, and therefore the softer the impact. Not sure what to look for? You can check out this article on how much travel you need to learn more.

DRIVETRAIN

Drivetrain is the complete bike mechanism that works to help you make forward progress. It includes a few different parts, but when deciding on your drivetrain, the most important thing to know is the cassette.

In this article, the numbers you see listed next to the “Drivetrain” spec (2×8, for example) refer to the number of gears on the front and back of the bike. Multiply these numbers together to find how many gears the bike has all together. For example, a 2×8 drivetrain would have 16 gears.

DROPPER POST

This is a style of seat post that raises and lowers the seat automatically through a control button on the handlebar. It comes in handy when you’re climbing and descending a lot of hills so you can adjust your seat height on-the-go.

DISC BRAKES

A new age style of bicycle brake in which a clamp-like mechanism grips a stationary disc on each wheel to bring the bike to a halt. There are two main types of disc brakes-mechanical and hydraulic.

Mechanical disc brakes work like a style of brake you might be used to. When you pull on your brake handle, a cable tightens up, causing the brake clamp to close down on the disc and bring the bike to a stop.

Hydraulic disc brakes work in a similar way, but they use fluid to activate the brake. They are the most effective brake style for mountain bikes (and other bikes, too).

Read more about disc brakes here.

INTERNAL CABLE ROUTING

The cables and hoses that control the gears and brakes are routed through the frame instead of on the outside. This makes servicing the bike easier and quicker. It also looks aesthetically more pleasing.

BERM

A curved bank found on mountain bike trails meant for riding on!

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING FAT BIKE WHEELS

COST

As you may have noticed as you browsed our list of best fat bike wheels, you have a pretty big range of options when it comes to the investment component of this purchase. As is true with many cycling products, a higher price usually indicates higher quality materials and a longer life. That being said, you definitely don’t have to break the bank to get yourself outfitted with some stellar fat bike wheels, especially if you’re just getting started with the sport. With some time reading from this list, you should be able to find a set of wheels that is right for both your bike and your budget!

MATERIAL

There are a few different makeups when it comes to fat bike wheels. Namely, they are carbon, aluminum, or some type of alloy (mixture of metals). In general, carbon wheels are much lighter than wheels made from other metals. They’re great if you plan to tackle lots of tough terrain and especially if you plan on climbing any hills or mountains. The light but strong carbon fiber aids in this type of biking.

Steel and aluminum are great alternative options to carbon. They are strong and they are more affordable than carbon, but both of these metals are heavier than carbon too, so they can make it more difficult if you are climbing or biking for long distances.

Many wheels are made of an alloy, or a mixture of two or more of these metals.

WIDTH

So just how fat should your fat bike wheels be? Well, width is an important determinant of how your bike handles, so it really depends on what kind of terrain you’ll be tackling most.

Narrower rims are great for speed and turning because they’re lighter and therefore easier to handle. As you increase the width of your fat bike wheels, you gear them more toward stability in sand, snow, and other whacky terrain, and less toward speed and ease of turning.

For an in-depth guide, check out this expert article about how to choose the right fat bike rim width for you.

SPOKES

Spokes are a really important part of your fat bike wheel. Without them, your bike wheel would fall apart under the weight and pressure of the bike frame and your body on top of it.

Depending on the kind of fat biking you’ll be doing, you may want to have more spokes. In general, wheels with 35 or fewer spokes are not intended to carry any sort of extra weight or endure rough terrain.

If you’ll be taking your fat bike through any rough terrain at all, you’ll want to look for something with more than 35 spokes, especially because spokes can break (though it is not common) and the more spokes you have, the longer the wheel will hold up even in the event of a break. Number of spokes is not always specified clearly on a product page, so if this is something that will be important for you, you may need to inquire.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

TUBES AND TUBELESS TIRES

A pipe-shaped piece of rubber that sits against the bike wheel on the inside of the tire, the tube is the part that gets filled with air. Tubeless tires, on the other hand, are designed to work without tubes, and air can be pumped directly into a tubeless tire. Need some additional help with this topic? The REI experts can help. They explain how to choose bike tires here.

SPOKES

Thin, metal supports that run through the center of the wheel and work together to maintain the integrity of the wheel itself.

WALL

In this article, “wall” or “wall design” refers to the flat, circular surface that makes up the bike wheel.

BEACH CRUISER

Beach cruisers are a one-speed style of bike that falls somewhere between a normal road bike and a fat bike. Their tires are a bit smaller than fat bike tires, but some fat bike wheels are compatible with beach cruisers, as well.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING HANDLEBAR BAGS FOR TOURING

COST

Don’t skimp out on the cost of a handlebar bag for touring. The last thing you want to happen when you’re out on the open road is to get a tear in the bag where you keep your easy-to-reach essentials! When it comes to touring bags of any kind, a higher cost is usually worth it – more expensive bags will last a good deal longer than cheap ones, and they’ll give you peace of mind on your trips, too.

CARRYING CAPACITY

We’ve listed the carrying capacity of each of the touring bags on this list in liters. Capacity comes down to personal preference. Some cyclists use their handlebar bag as a place for some hefty extra carrying space, while others simply want a small bag with easy access to things they’ll want during the ride like a snack or a camera. This is really up to you!

DESIGN

Handlebar bags for touring come in all different sizes and all different shapes, too! Some have a firm skeleton, while others are made to stretch and bend. Again, this factor comes down to preference and what you will be putting in your handlebar bag. For example, if you’re simply using the bag to stash an extra layer, you probably don’t care as much about the shape, but if you’re someone who wants to always have a granola bar handy, you’ll probably want to look for something with at least one small external pocket.

PADDING

Do you plan to hold electronics like a phone or camera in your handlebar bag? If so, you’ll want to look for a bag with internal padding to protect your expensive cargo from bumps or falls.

MOUNTING MECHANISM

Many handlebar bags for touring come with an attachment mechanism for easy set up, but some don’t. This is something you’ll want to note when you’re making your purchase, since you’ll need to purchase a mount for those bags that don’t come with their own attachment system.

WATERPROOFING

Not all handlebar bags for touring are waterproof. Many are, but others come with a seperate waterproof covering that you can put on in the event of wet weather. Waterproof material bags tend to be more expensive than non-waterproof material bags, but if you plan to do biking in any wet weather at all, a waterproof bag is well worth the extra cost.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

WATERPROOF

This article features handlebar bags that are waterproof, water-resistant, or come with a waterproof covering. A fully waterproof bag means that it won’t let any water in to your valuables, keeping them safe and dry for the entire ride. If you’re planning on riding in wet weather at all on your trip, then you should consider investing in a waterproof bag rather than just one with a waterproof covering or one that’s water-resistant.

WEIGHT

In this article, weight refers to the weight of an empty handlebar bag.

SELF-MOUNTING

A handlebar bag that is capable of mounting to the bike without the purchase of any additional attachment mechanisms.

In addition to the lightweight benefit of the open air design, this pedal shape also allows the rider to trek through mud, snow, or sand without being slowed down or stopped nearly as much as they would be with traditional pedal designs. And for when you are clipped in, the adjustable clip tension allows you to ease into it. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING PEDALS FOR BIKE TOURING

PEDAL TYPE

There are two main types of pedals discussed in this article. They are clipless and platform. For an in-depth look at each pedal type, see Specs And Features Explained below.

MATERIAL

The most common pedal materials are aluminum, steel, and chromoly.

Steel is the sturdiest (and heaviest) of these materials. If you’re a little bit rough with your bike, steel is a good choice for your pedals. The downside of choosing a heavy pedal is that it adds weight to your bike, and therefore has the potential to slow you down slightly.

Aluminum is lighter than steel, but heavier than chromoly. It’s a great “happy medium” for cyclists of all levels.

Chromoly is a high quality metal blend that is extremely lightweight and strong. Pedals made from chromoly tend to be more expensive than other pedals.

WEIGHT

With lower weight comes higher efficiency and speed, but also cost. Heavier metals tend to be more cost effective, but they can also slow you down.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

SPINDLES

Spindles are the little arms that protrude from the pedal and connect to the crank arm on the bicycle. Pedal installation can be a little tricky if you’ve never done it on your own before. For help, check out this article, complete with a video, on pedal installation and removal.

CLEAT TYPE

Cleat type is of the utmost importance when you are shopping for pedals for bike touring because your cleat must be compatible with your pedal! There are two main types of cleats: 2-hole design and 3-hole design.

CLIPLESS STYLE

First of all, forget everything you know about the English language because this name is extremely misleading. In fact, clipless style pedals are pretty much the opposite of what you might think. Clipless style pedals are pedals that you actually do “clip into.” They got their name because they came along after another style of pedal that incorporates toe clips, an attachable device that covers your toes and assists in upward pedaling power.

So, clipless pedals are compatible with special cycling shoes that attach to the pedals and lock your foot into place, allowing you to exert forward mobility power on both the down and upstroke of your pedaling rotation. They are great for long distance rides and rides where speed and efficiency is important.

Clipless pedals can take a little bit of getting used to, and can be a little bit dangerous for the inexperienced user since it is not always easy to unclip quickly. Once you master the technique of getting in and out of the pedals, though, they can really improve your pedaling performance.

Ready to take the leap? This great article from BikeRadar explains some great tips and tricks for how to use clipless pedals.

PLATFORM STYLE

Platform style pedals are what probably come to mind when you picture a bicycle. They’re the classic style of pedal that you most likely grew up with and have used many times before. These pedals don’t “lock you in” in any way and are fairly flat on both sides. They’re less efficient, but they’re also easier to use.

One of the very best ways to level up your bikepacking game is with a pair of bikepacking shoes. If you’ve never used them before, they will truly change your world! Bikepacking shoes have the ability to take you to the next level because they effectively double your rotational power. They do this by capturing the energy you put out not only on the downstroke, but on the upstroke, too. We’ve compiled this list of the best bikepacking shoes so you can get geared up with an Adventure-Junkie-Approved pair of shoes in no time.

If you’re new to bike shoes, there are a few things you need to know before you dive in. First of all, these are shoes that actually lock your foot on to your pedal, which can be a bit of an adjustment if you’re not used to it. We suggest looking for a softer, 2-hole cleat design to start. We explain more about this at the end of the article, so be sure to check that out if you want more information. Happy trails!

This particular pair of bikepacking shoes helps remedy that drawback.

From the original creator of the clipless style of riding comes the Shimano RP4’s. These bikepacking shoes feature a wide heel base so that walking is that much easier. BEST LACE UP SHOE

Some intense cyclists view lace up style bike shoes as low-tech and outdated. However, there are actually some significant benefits to this O.G. closure system. With laces, it’s easy to create a custom fit. They can be done and redone until they feel just right. They’re also super easy to replace in the middle of a ride if something goes wrong. And as far as lace up bikepacking shoes go, we think the Pearl iZUMi Tour (men’s) and Sugar (women’s) shoes are where it’s at.

In addition to their familiar yet reliable closure system, these bikepacking shoes incorporate cutting edge sole technology to keep you feeling light on the pedals and ready to keep on rolling. They’re one of the only bike shoes out there that has integrated ventilation and drainage technology that pushes out hot air and moisture to keep you cool and comfortable. BEST WIDE SHOE

I speak from personal experience when I say it’s tough to have wide feet! When shoe-shopping, those of us with this problem often find ourselves limited in our options, especially when it comes to bike shoes, which are built for aerodynamics and performance. That’s why the Bontrager Circuit Road (men’s) and Sonic (women’s) models are so exciting! They’re made for a roomier feel and are sure to appease even us wide-footed bike enthusiasts.

In addition to their spacious fit, these bikepacking shoes are awesome for a number of other reasons. Their high-tech closure system allows you to close the shoe with a precision that is just right for your foot. They’re also compatible with both 2 and 3-hole cleats, though you will need to purchase an additional plate for 2-hole compatibility. They have a medium stiffness that is suitable for ambitious beginners and intermediates alike. And to top it all off, their price tag is super reasonable for such a high-quality shoe.

BEST IN SHOE…UH, I MEAN SHOW

If you’re looking for an all-around high performing bikepacking shoe (and are willing to pay the cost that comes along with it), we’ve got just the product for you. Introducing the super comfortable, ultralight, and remarkably durable Genius SR7 Shadow Mega Bike shoes from Sidi. Wow, try saying that ten times fast!

This shoe’s intense name is only fitting for such an intense bikepacking shoe! For starters, its closure system is more involved than most. It combines a strap and ratchet system to provide the ultimate precision fit. It also has replaceable heel pads which provide coverage and protection, aid in comfort and performance, and increase the longevity of the shoe itself.

Like we mentioned above, these shoes do come at a significantly higher cost than most other bikepacking shoes, but if you’re serious about the sport and want to have the best gear on the market, this is it.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKEPACKING SHOES

CLOSURE TYPE

There are three main bikepacking shoe closure types: lace up, velcro strap, and ratchet or cable lace. There are some key differences between the three. Read on.

Lace up closure systems are probably quite familiar. They work just like your sneaker does. Laces do wear out and sometimes break, but the good news is that fixing them is as easy as carrying a spare pair of laces in your pack. This is a major benefit of lace up style closure systems, since fixing strap or ratchet cables can sometimes require tools or bike shop maintenance.

Velcro strap closure systems are a happy medium between the low-tech quality of the lace ups and the high tech, but more involved nature of the ratchet/cable systems. Velcro straps aren’t likely to break suddenly and they are probably the easiest to adjust; you can even do it while you’re pedaling! One downside of the velcro strap is that it doesn’t always stay in place as well as the other systems.

Ratchet or cable lace systems are the most technologically advanced bike shoe closure system. They involve a two-way adjustable cog that holds itself in place once tightened. They’re great for precision fitting and can usually be adjusted easily on the go. The downside to this type of closure system is that it can be tricky to fix on your own and may require a visit to the bike shop.

CLEAT TYPE

There are two main bicycle cleat types: 2-hole and 3-hole, and there are a few key differences between the two types. The cleat type you choose is totally up to you, but you must make sure that whichever you choose, your pedal is compatible. 2-hole or 3-hole will always be listed in a product’s specs.

2-hole cleats were originally developed for trail and mountain biking. Here’s what else you need to know:

  • They still work well for road biking
  • They’re the most common cleat type and most rental bikes will employ pedals that are compatible with this type of shoe
  • Easiest to walk in
  • Easiest to clip in and out of
  • Ever so slightly reduced power (in comparison to 3-hole cleats)

3-hole cleats are considered “higher end” cleats because they are built for superior power and performance. Here’s what else you need to know:

  • They are made for road cycling enthusiasts
  • Three points of contact means a more efficient stroke
  • More difficult to walk in
  • More difficult to clip in and out of, but with the benefit of more security while pedaling

Still want to know more about cleat/pedal compatibility? Check out this helpful article that gives an overview of cycling cleats and pedal basics.

WEIGHT

There’s no big secret to this important consideration. With lighter bikepacking shoes comes slightly higher cost and better performance. Alternatively, with heavier bikepacking shoes comes lower cost and slightly reduced performance.

MATERIALS

There are three main parts of any bikepacking shoe: the upper, footbed, and outsole (see below for a description of each). There are many materials bikepacking shoes can be made of. For an in-depth guide, check out this article that explains various common materials and the part of the bike shoe they’re used for.

STIFFNESS

Stiffness comes down to a matter of personal preference. Stiff shoes are built for high performance, but you’ll have to sacrifice some comfort. Some bike shoes give a stiffness rating (usually 1-14), while others describe stiffness in the product description. If you’re new to bikepacking, you’ll probably want to seek out a softer shoe until you master the clipless style.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

FOOTBED/SOLE

The lower internal part of the shoe, where your foot sits.

OUTSOLE

The bottom part of the shoe that contacts the ground.

UPPER

The outermost layer on the top part of the shoe.

Reviews - The Best Touring Bike for Women

Co-op Cycles ADV 1.1

Specs
  • Frame Material: Chromoly Steel

  • Handlebar Shape: Drop Bar
  • Brake Type: Disc
  • Number of Gears: 30
  • Pedals Included: No
Features
  • “Ultra-Low” Gear Option Makes Steep Climbs Easy
  • Twenty-Nine Additional Speeds Allow You To Set Your Gear Just Right
  • Front and Rear Rack Included

BEST FOR: HILLS

Okay, you want to get a touring bike, but you don’t want to break the bank. So you purchase your bike at what you think is a reasonable price, but then you realize you still have to buy all the accessories to go with it. Well ladies and er…ladies, this bike comes in at a higher price point than some on the list, but it may be worth the investment, and here’s why: This bike comes with both front and rear racks already installed. Plus, when you become a member of the REI Co-Op and purchase this bike, you get almost $200 back into your wallet that can you can put towards gear! Not to mention the free one-time tune-up offered by REI if you buy a bike directly from them (are we starting to sound like a broken record yet?)

This bike is cool for beginners and experts alike because it has (an impressive) thirty gears. There is literally a gear for every scenario, and that includes an ultra-low gear for super steep climbs. If you are just getting into biking and don’t yet have the leg strength for those big ascents, this bike could solve that problem until you work your way to Hulk-status.

Co-op Cycles ADV 4.2

Specs
  • Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 35 Pounds
  • Handlebar Shape: Trekking Bar
  • Brake Type: Disc
  • Number of Gears: 32
  • Pedals Included: No
Features
  • Seat Suspension Gives Your Tush A Comfy Cushion
  • Unique Handlebar Design Allows For Many Different Hand Positions
  • Carries Up To 250 Pounds Of Gear

BEST FOR: COMFORT

The Co-Op Cycles ADV 4.2 was built for comfort, and it is unique in a couple of ways. First off, it is one of the only touring bikes on the market that has seat suspension. Suspension is a feature more common on mountain bikes and other off-roaders. Bikes with suspension have one or more parts that “give” or “play,” meaning they move up and down a bit when you go over bumps. Seat suspension is a feature that not many road bikes have, and it definitely provides extra comfort for those with a more delicate booty.

Another special feature of this bike is its one of a kind handlebar shape, also known as the trekking bar. The trekking bar is unique because it allows the rider to assume the traditional straight handlebar position, but it also has a U-shaped bar coming off the front of it. This allows for multiple hand positions and the opportunity to lean forward for increased comfort and aerodynamics.

This bike also comes with a back rack, so you don’t have to worry about selecting one to go along with the purchase of your bike. REI will install it for you (as part of their free full-bike assembly). And if you’ve read any of the reviews that came before this section, then you know what I am going to say next…don’t forget about your free tune-up with purchase of any REI bike!

Cinelli Hobootleg Complete

Specs
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Weight: 28 Pounds
  • Handlebar Shape: Drop Bar
  • Brake Type: Cantilever
  • Number of Gears: 9
  • Pedals Included: Yes
Features
  • Anti-Corrosion Treatment Ensures Your Bike Is Protected Against Weather Of All Kinds
  • Rugged Shifter Stands Up To Damage
  • Protected Brake And Shifter Cables Diminish The Chance Of A Snag

BEST FOR: HEAVY LOADS

This bike boasts superior frame strength and protection. Weighing in at around 28 pounds, this bike is heavy duty. It comes with rear and front racks to carry multiple panniers, as well as rear and front fenders to keep water from splashing up onto the rider. It also has coverage for the brake and shifting cables to prevent damage from weather or brush. Its steel frame is strong and study and you can feel comfortable packing a whole lot onto it without losing your ability to steer and control.

This bike was also built with rider comfort in mind. Its drop handlebar shape allows for multiple hand positions, which is great for longer rides, and as a bonus, it has a super thick handlebar padding to prevent blisters and increase hand cushioning.

Schwinn Discover Hybrid

Specs
  • Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 45 Pounds
  • Handlebar Shape: Flat Bar
  • Brake Type: Cantilever
  • Number of Gears: 21
  • Pedals Included: Yes
Features
  • Front And Rear Tire Fenders Prevent Wetness On Tires From Splashing Onto You Or Your Gear
  • Shimano Derailleur Makes For A Smooth Shifting Experience
  • Ultra-Cushioned Seat Makes For A Comfortable Ride

BEST FOR: BEGINNER CYCLISTS

This bike is a great “midway” option in a lot of categories, meaning it is great quality without being too ritzy or advanced. Coming in as the most budget-friendly option on the list, it makes a great option for those who want something that will be reliable without a lot of extra features, like the base model of a car.

It boasts a super comfy seat, light but durable aluminum frame, and handlebar suspension. The gearing system has twenty-one gears. Plus, fenders, a rear rack, and pedals are included in the already low cost of this bike. This puppy has the comfort of a beach cruiser and the shifting capability of a modern-day road bike. If you’re looking for a low-cost option to kick off your touring career, you won’t be disappointed with the Discover Hybrid!

Giordano Libero

Specs
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Weight: 35 Pounds
  • Handlebar Shape: Drop Bar
  • Brake Type: Cantilever
  • Number of Gears: 14
  • Pedals Included: Yes
Features
  • Aluminum Cranks Assist In Climbs
  • Available In Small And Medium Sizes
  • Great Beginner Bike For The Price!

BEST FOR: OVERALL VALUE

This bike is another great pick for those looking to dip their toes into the world of bike touring who aren’t quite ready to commit to a complicated and expensive bike. This road bike comes in at an affordable price, and it has many of the features you need to get started.

Its Shimano drivetrain is made by a trusted brand and promises a smooth and confident shifting experience for its rider. Its drop bar handlebar shape is a step up from the straight bar found on many beginner bikes. Its saddle design has women-specific comfort in mind. And its tough steel frame ensures stability and durability. This is no extravagant tour bike, but as far as value goes, it’s a pretty great bang for your buck.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A WOMEN’S TOURING BIKE

TERRAIN

Bike touring is exciting because it can take you anywhere! But that doesn’t mean that everyone will want to go everywhere on their tour bike. Consider what kind of trips you may want to take – will you mostly stick to flat bike paths and designated bike routes? Will you venture onto other roadways with peaks and hills? Will you off-road? These are all questions to ask yourself when considering which features will be most important for your bike. Want to plan your first bike trip but not sure where to start? Take a look at this article that explains easy steps to plan a bike tour!

HANDLEBAR SHAPE

This may seem like a super basic option, but the shape of your handlebars is more integral to a comfortable ride than you may initially realize. Beginners may be used to a handlebar that goes straight across, but I would encourage you to consider a drop bar shape. Drop bars take a little bit of getting used to, but they allow for multiple hand and riding positions, and in turn result in increased comfort on longer rides. You should note that drop bar handlebars often come with a slightly higher price tag than the traditional handlebar shape (but we think they’re worth it!).

FRAME MAKEUP

Aluminum, Steel, and Carbon are the three most popular frame materials found on touring bikes, and each serves a slightly different purpose.

Carbon is ultra-light and increases bike speed and agility, while sacrificing the ability to stand up to rough conditions and carry large amounts of weight.

Steel is a heavy-duty frame material, often found on super sturdy bikes. Steel can make for a hefty bike that is slightly harder to control and maneuver.

Aluminum is a solid “in-between” material. It is stronger than carbon and less heavy than steel.

NUMBER OF GEARS

The bikes on this list showcase a lot of variability when it comes to number of gears. In general, it is useful to have many gears because you can fine tune the degree of effort you expend while pedaling (and therefore how much distance you gain with each pedal stroke). However, some folks prefer fewer gears because bikes with fewer gears still offer the ability to adjust the difficulty of pedaling, and they have a bit less to think about and fiddle with. Number of gears comes down to personal preference, and you’ll find a wide range on this list.

COST

How could we leave out cost! This is a consideration on many a bike-buyer’s mind, especially since the price of this product in particular varies so greatly. When choosing a touring bike, be careful. While high cost will usually mean high quality, low cost does not necessarily mean low quality!

You can get a really great touring bike for only a few hundred bucks if you look for it. When considering the cost of your bike, you should first think about the other “things to consider” on this list. Make sure your bike has the features you need for the trips you plan to take, and then seek out a bike in your price range from there.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED

Perhaps surprisingly, there can sometimes be a lot that is not included when you make a touring bike purchase. Things like pedals, racks, and even bike assembly or bike tune-ups may or may not be included with your purchase. These are important considerations to factor into the overall cost. Don’t forget to budget for the extras. (Did I mention REI offers free assembly and one free bike tune-up with the purchase of any bike?).

P.S. Two of the most important extras you can buy to get started with bike touring are a rack and bike bags. Click on this helpful article for advice on choosing the right rack and bags for you.

FEATURES EXPLAINED

DRIVETRAIN

Drivetrain is a fancy word that refers to several different parts of the bike, all of which help propel the bike forward in different ways. Its main components are the bike’s shifters, chain, derailleurs, and crankset (the part that holds the pedals). Many of these individual parts are explained below.

FENDERS

Fenders are a piece of metal or plastic that sits just above the top part of the tires to prevent moisture from kicking up onto the rider or the rider’s bags.

BRAKES

Industry-wide, disc brakes are considered to be the highest performing brakes. They can stop the bike quickly, even in wet weather. Cantilever, caliper, and V-brakes are also common. Want to know more? Check out this article that explains how different brake types work.

GEARS

Gears adjust how difficult it is to pedal. Lower gears make it easier to pedal, but each pedal stroke propels you a shorter distance. Higher gears make it more difficult to pedal, but each pedal stroke propels you a greater distance. For bike touring, you’ll want to find a bike with at least ten gears.

RACK AND BAGS/PANNIERS

A bike rack attaches to the front or back part of the frame and is designed to carry bike bags to store your gear. Pannier is the technical name for bike bags.

FORK

The part of the bike frame that holds the front wheel and allows it to spin and turn.

SHIFTER/DERAILLEUR

The shifter and derailleur work together to allow the rider to change gears. “Shifter” refers to the buttons or dial on the handlebars that is used to adjust the position of the “derailleur,” which is the actual mechanism that moves the chain into different positions along the gears.

BEST FOR: RAINY WEATHER

When it comes to rain and other kinds of wet weather, not all bikepacking tents perform the same! We’ve selected The Marmot Tungsten tent as our best-performing tent for rainy weather because of its waterproof seams and large rain fly that keeps rain out but continues to let fresh air in, meaning you won’t get hot and sticky inside.

This tent also comes with a reasonable price tag and color-coded setup system. It is capable of sleeping two people and suitable for three season use. Plus, for its floor space, the tent is still reasonably lightweight. Gotta love it!

The Stormbreak tent from The North Face features two oversized doors for easy access, even when another person is inside the tent.

In addition to its easy access doors, this tent also has a waterproof floor and seams, superior ventilation, and easy setup. It weighs a good bit more than some of the other tents on this list, but it is also super reasonably priced.

The Trango Tent from Mountain Hardwear is everything you’d want in a bikepacking tent and then some. Intended to withstand four season use, everything about this tent is strong and sturdy, from its lightweight poles to its waterproof fabric and fly.

There’s not much not to love here, so we thought it might be easier to tell you about the only downsides we see with this superior quality tent. You’ll definitely pay the cost for this one, as it is double and even triple the price as some of the other tents on this list. Since it is built to withstand extreme weather and last through many uses, you’ll sacrifice a little bit of weight, too, which means this tent is a little heavier than some of the others on the list. Both of these downsides are the cost of an extremely high quality, reliable tent.

The Marmot Catalyst is a high quality tent that is also perfect for those who are balling, er… should we say bikepacking on a budget! This finance-friendly tent offers 3-season use, 2-person capacity, and easy setup.

You’ll find that the Marmot Catalyst boasts a great amount of interior space for its cost, as well. Plus, it has several interior pockets for stashing your small gear and an overhead “lampshade” pocket that turns your headlamp into a tent light. It is also lightweight and strong! For the cost, it would be tough to find another tent that performs so well.

BEST FOR: ALL SEASON USE

Previously hesitant to camp in colder weather? Want to feel secure in your tent no matter what the season and weather conditions? If you answered yes to either of those questions, it sounds like you’re a candidate for a four season tent. And if you want the best of the best, then we highly recommend checking out the Firstlight from Black Diamond.

Though it features a minimalist design and lacks the bells and whistles that some other tents in  the same price range have, don’t be fooled. The Firstlight has all the basic features any bikepacker would want: lightweight design, spacious floor dimensions, and interior pockets for stashing gear. And since it’s built to withstand extreme weather all year long, you’ll feel safe and secure no matter what camping conditions you’re working with.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKEPACKING TENTS

COST

Bikepacking tents come in a wide range of costs. More expensive tents do tend to last longer than cheap ones, but that does not mean that there are not good quality budget friendly tents out there, too! Before you head to the bank to take out a loan, do your research. We’ve included quality tents at a range of prices on this list so that you can find a tent that is just right for you (and your wallet!).

SLEEPING CAPACITY

We’ve included 1-, 2- and 3-person tents in this article. You’ll often see abbreviations for the number of people a tent can hold. For example, 1P means “one person” and 2P means “two person.”

Because one major goal of most bikepacking tents is to reduce weight and therefore size, some one person tents are quite small. So, even if you are an individual traveler, you may want to consider a two person tent, especially if you’re someone who likes a bit of wiggle room when you sleep. Same goes for two people – it might be worth considering investing a little extra cash and pack space for a 3-person tent if you know you like to spread out at night or store all your gear in the tent with you!

SEASONABILITY

Many bikepacking tents are built to withstand just part of the year: the tail end of spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. These tents are known as two season tents. Three season tents, on the other hand, are built to withstand the full scope of spring, summer, and fall. Beyond the mighty three season tent is the even mightier four season tent. Four season tents are built for more extreme weather and will fare well in all seasons. One thing to keep in mind: the higher the number of seasons, the more expensive the tent.

Pro Seasonability Tip: Never camped in the wintertime but looking to try it out? Read this article from REI Expert Advice first. It will tell you all about winter camping basics.

WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS

When it comes to bikepacking, you want to minimize weight and dimensions as much as you can without sacrificing quality or functionality. We’ve listed the full weight of each tent on this list of best bikepacking tents. Most of them also have what’s called a “minimal trail weight,” which means you can opt to leave some tent components behind (like the rainfly or footprint) to shave weight. We’ve also listed the tents’ dimensions when packed up for travel and the dimensions of the floors when the tents are set up.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A GPS FOR BIKEPACKING

COST

Bike enthusiasts know how it goes: the costs of cycling equipment add up fast, especially when you’re considering something technical like a GPS for bikepacking. However, you don’t have to break the bank when it comes to a bikepacking GPS. Something like the Wahoo Fitness Roam MINI will get the job done just fine and cover all your basic bike computer and GPS needs.

That being said, in some cases, you may actually want to spend a little extra and get a really nice bike computer with a slew of features and a beautiful display to top it all off. And you can! There is truly a huge range of prices on the market when it comes to bike GPS’s, so if you do your research, you’re sure to find something that works for you (and your wallet!).

CONNECTIVITY CAPABILITIES

In this day and age, pretty much all quality bike GPS come with the ability to link and send data to your smartphone. If this is something that is important to you, just make sure you don’t accidentally snag one of the few available that do not connect.

Some bike GPS’s also have the ability to connect to one another. This feature allows riders with the same GPS model to send (often pre-written) messages to each other. This can definitely come in handy, but it only works if your fellow riders have the same GPS as you do.

SAFETY FEATURES

Believe it or not, something as simple as location sharing can be a safety feature! Other common features include “Rearview,” which offers the ability to see approaching cars in real time on your GPS screen, and Incident Detection, which alerts emergency contacts in the event of a crash.

If you typically ride in a group, these features may not be important to you, but if you ride alone often, we recommend a GPS that works to keep you safe in addition to keeping you on route.

DATA CUSTOMIZABILITY

Some GPS’s for bikepacking have hundreds of customizable data collection fields. Others come with just the basics. The depth with which you can customize your GPS data collection is really up to you because the sky’s the limit if you want it to be! However, fancy data collection and analytics is a feature that can dramatically affect the cost of your GPS.

AN IN-DEPTH GUIDE

FEATURES EXPLAINED

CADENCE

Measured in revolutions per minute (RPM), cadence is the pace at which pedaling takes place. Not sure where to keep your RPM’s? Wahoo Fitness explains cadence here.

ILLUMINATION

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING BIKEPACKING SHORTS

COST

Those who frequent the bikepacking world know that bike equipment and accessories can be found quite cheap, but can also get expensive fast! When it comes to bikepacking shorts, if you do your research, you can definitely find a quality pair of shorts at a reasonable price. We’ve included a great range of product prices on this list, so you’ll definitely be able to choose a pair that fits your budget.

PADDING

Traditional bike shorts come equipped with padding, but not everyone wants fully padded shorts. Some cyclists find padding excessive. For this reason, bikepacking shorts come in a range of padding options, from no padding, to light padding, to full padding.

LENGTH

The shortest of short bikepacking shorts are actually designed to fit underneath another layer, while the longest bikepacking shorts can be worn on their own and often serve another purpose like preventing chafing or protection from the sun. Length comes down to personal preference.

FABRIC

When it comes to bikepacking shorts, moisture-wicking, quick-drying, stretchy and comfortable fabric is a must! For more on what UPF means and how it is measured, check out this helpful article on sun-protective clothing.
